Chemically sterilized...or mechanically sterilized?

It is clear that applying chemicals to your yard and landscape, be it fertilizers, weed killers, or pesticides, has devastating effects to the community of life that is present in every place.

But is the terrifying decline in insects explainable by chemicals alone?

When i am in mowed environments, even those that I know have no lawn chemicals, they are almost entirely empty of life. There are a few bees and other insects on the dandelions, but not many, and the only birds I see are American robins, Grackles, and European starlings.

Even without any weed killers at all, regular mowing of a lawn type area eliminates all but a few specially adapted weeds.

The plants of a lawn where I live include: Mouse ear chickweed, Birds-eye Speedwell, Common blue violet, Dandelion, Wild Garlic, Creeping charlie, White Clover, Black Medick, Broad-leaved plantain, Mock Strawberry, Crabgrass, Small-flowered Buttercup, Ribwort Plantain, Daisy Fleabane, a few common sedges, Red Deadnettle...That sounds like a lot of plants, but the problem is, almost all of them are non-native species (Only Violets, Daisy Fleabane, and the sedges are native!) and it's. The Same. Species. Everywhere. In. Every. Place.

How come...? Because mowed turf is a really specific environment that is really specifically beneficial to a number of almost entirely European plants, and presents stressors that most plants (including almost all native north american plants) simply can't cope with.

The plants mentioned above are just the flowering weeds. The grasses themselves, the dominant component of the lawn, are essentially 100% invasive in North America, many of them virulently and destructively invasive.

Can you believe that Kentucky bluegrass isn't even native to Kentucky? Nope, it's European! The rich pasture of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky was predominantly a mix of clover, other legumes, and bamboo. The clovers—Kentucky clover, Running buffalo clover, and buffalo clover—are highly endangered now (hell, kentucky clover wasn't even DISCOVERED until 2013) and the bamboo—Giant rivercane, Arundinaria gigantea—has declined in its extent by 98%. Do European white and red clovers fulfill the niches that native clovers once did? Dunno, probably not entirely.

One of the biggest troubles with "going native" is that North America legitimately does not have native grass species that really fill the niche of lawn. Most small, underfoot grassy plants are sedges and they are made for shady environments, and they form tufts and fancy sprays, not creeping turf. Then there's prairie grasses which are 10 feet tall.

What this means, though, is that lawns don't even remotely resemble environments that our insects and birds evolved for. Forget invasive species, lawns are an invasive BIOME.

It's a terrible thing, then, that this is just what we do to whatever random land we don't cover in concrete: back yards, road margins, land outside of churches and businesses, spaces at the edges of fields, verges at bypasses and gas stations...

Mowing, in the north american biomes, selects for invasive species and promotes them while eliminating native species. There's no nice way to put it. The species that thrive under this treatment are invasive.

And unfortunately mowing is basically the only well-known and popular tool even for managing meadow and prairie type "natural" environments. If you want to prevent it from succeeding to forest, just mow it every couple of years.

This has awful results, because invasive species like Festuca arundinacea (a plant invented by actual Satan) love it and are promoted, and the native species are harmed.

Festuca arundinacea, aka Tall Fescue, btw is the main grass that you'll find in cheap seed mixes in Kentucky, but it's a horrific invasive species that chokes everything and keeps killing my native meadow plants. It has leaves like razor blades (it's cut me so deeply that it scarred) and has an endosymbiont in it that makes horses that eat it miscarry their foals.

And this stuff is ALL OVER the "prairie" areas where I work, like it's the most dominant plant by far, because it thrives on being mowed while the poor milkweeds, Rattlesnake Master and big bluestems slowly decline and suffer.

It's wild how hard it is to explain that mowing is a very specific type of stressor that many plants will respond very very negatively to. North American plants did not evolve under pressures that involved being squished, crushed, snipped to 8 inches tall uniformly and covered in a suffocating blanket of shredded plant matter. That is actually extremely bad for many of the prairie plants that are vital keystone species. Furthermore it does not control invasive species but rather promotes them.

Native insects need native plant cover. Many of them co-evolved intimately with particular host plants. Many others evolved to eat those guys. And Lord don't get me started on leaf removal, AKA the greatest folly of all humankind.

So wherever there is a mowed environment, regardless of the use of chemicals or not, the bugs don't have the structural or physical habitat characteristics they evolved for and they don't have the plant species they evolved to be dependent on.

Now let's think about three-dimensional space.

This post was inspired when I saw several red winged blackbirds in the unmowed part of a field perching on old stems of Ironweed and goldenrod. The red-winged blackbirds congregated in the unmowed part of the field, but the mowed part was empty. The space in a habitat is not just the area of the land viewed from above as though on a map. Imagine a forest, think of all the squirrels and birds nesting and sitting on branches and mosses and lichens covering the trunks and logs. The trees extend the habitat space into 3 dimensions.

Any type of plant cover is the same. A meadow where the plants grow to 3 feet tall, compared with a lawn of 6 inches tall, not only increases the quality of the habitat, it really multiplies the total available space in the habitat, because there is such a great area of stems and leaves for bugs and birds to be on. A little dandelion might form a cute little corner store for bugs, A six foot tall goldenrod? That's a bug skyscraper! It fits way more bugs.

It's not just the plants themselves, it's the fallen leaves that get trapped underneath them—tall meadow plants seem to gather and hoard fallen leaves underneath. More tall plants is also more total biomass, which is the foundation of the whole food chain!

Now consider light and shade. Even a meadow of 3ft tall plants actually shades the ground. Mosses grow enthusiastically even forming thick mats where none at all could grow in the mowed portions. And consider also amphibians. They are very sensitive to UV light, so even a frog that lives in what you see as a more "open" environment, can be protected by some tall flowers and rushes but unable to survive in mowed back yard

🧁 And before his family left after the two days of vacation with their son, hearing his siblings ramble about how amazing you were as they held tiny gifts you had made them, he knew you were the one

🧁 He can’t wait to see your reaction after graduation day

🐺 He really wanted you to meet his family. To a beastman of his kind, family is everything. They raised you and gave you a chance at life for crying out loud!

🐺 His family and his are very close, and that is shown multiple times throughout your relationship. The way he would smile gently when looking at the photos on his camera roll that contained his grandparents, parents, and younger siblings made your heart swoon

🐺 Because of how close he was with you and how close he was with his family, he was very happy when the ‘Family Day’ was announced to happen

🐺 He immediately had sent an email to his parents with the note that he wanted them to meet you, who was his new S/O, and hopefully his only one

🐺 When they had arrived, their tails all wagged as they hugged, you just smiled as your family walked away to speak to another one of your close friend’s parents, who were visiting him for the next few days to help with P.E. classes while Vargas was away

🐺 His siblings had gotten bored and pulled you away from their older family members, asking you if you had anything fun to do, much to your enjoyment

🐺 Jack smiled as you gently held the drawings that his younger sister and brother made of you and his family, and once his mother and grandmother caught a glace, they couldn’t stop complimenting how good you looked alongside their son, much to his embarrassment

" You know, your son did a good job picking an S/O. " " I know. Honestly, I figured he’d go for a meat-head. Oh, how wrong was I? "

🐺 His tail wagged slightly as he overheard his grandfather and father speaking to one another, they really liked you? Now he knew for certain that you were a keeper

🐍 Jamil did not want to deal with his sister coming to Night Raven College, since she was known to be quite hard for him to handle, especially with Kalim there

🐍 When his sister did shoot him a text saying that she was just a couple minutes from school grounds and was planning on coming over after the day was over to see her brother, he groaned and asked her not too

🐍 Unfortunately, she was very stubborn, much like her brother. Not that he admits it

🐍 She did send him a small message saying that she wanted to meet his supposed S/O as well, but he had gotten busy keeping Kalim from jumping from his balcony and onto his magic carpet, so he had no chance to actually read the message

" Y/N! It’s so good to finally meet you. Let me just say my brother doesn’t stop talking about you over summer, it’s gotten annoying. "

🐍 Jamil watched with wide eyes and flushed cheeks as his sister and Kalim began discussing how much Jamil talked about you after your first year’s summer, revealing just how much he admired you back then until current day

" Okay! Let’s not keep this going, it seems that Jamil is flustered~ " " Shut up… "

🐍 Najma smiled and pat her brother’s shoulder with a laugh as she grabbed your hand and dragged you around Scarabia as Jamil followed you, her, and Kalim

🐍 He watched as you would smile and try keeping the two energetic people calmer than usual, thank goodness you had just as much patience as him when it comes to this kind of thing

" My older brother always raves about your eyes, saying they looked like the night and day’s sky, comparing the sun to the sparkles your eyes contain. He’s so cheesy! " " Right? I heard him talk about their selflessness with so much happiness that I thought he was another person! " " Alrighty then! Let’s calm ourselves, I don’t want Jamil erupting like a volcano… " " Aw! They care so much about you, brother! How sweet. "

🐍 The blush on his cheeks erupted at how calm you acted with him, you cared about him that much? Normally whoever discusses with his sister just agree that he’s an oddball

🐍 You really are an amazing person, huh?

🏹 Rook adores his siblings, both older and younger, very much

🏹 They are fairly similar to him when it comes to personalities, but they are quite different in their own unique ways, his oldest sibling, Leroy (King), for example loves to take photos instead of watch for a while like Rook

🏹 When he received a letter from one of his oldest younger sibling, Chevalier (Knight), saying that they were going to come by and visit him, he smiled and told you immediately, asking if you would care to meet his family

🏹 You just smiled and nodded at his enthusiasm, you knew he cared for his siblings and you very much, so you understood why he wanted you guys to meet badly

🏹 Hugging you from behind as he pressed his hat on your head to protect you from the sun’s strong rays, Rook’s signature smile seemingly was twice as large as he awaited the arrival of his multiple family members

" Rook! "

🏹 Turning around from the bench, Rook laughed with a booming sound as his three younger siblings, Chevalier, Évêque (Bishop), and Pionne (Pawn), jumped into his arms as his older ones, Leroy and Reine (Queen), stood and chuckled

🏹 Reine looked at you and pushed her hair behind her ear as he embraced you. This didn't surprise you, you predicted that all of the Hunt siblings were very affectionate and bold with their actions

" It is a delight to meet you, Y/N! Our brother sends us letters about you constantly! I must admit, it’s sweet to read how kind you are with our unique brother. "

🏹 Hearing that made your heart swoon as Rook nodded and smiled sweetly at his younger siblings, patting their heads as they showed him photos of things they had either caught or had made during the past few days

🏹 He is unique like they say, but he’s your kind of unique, and you wouldn’t change him for the world… despite Grim’s many protests while Yuu holds him back…

"Flowers" - Crosshair x Doc

@narcissa-of-kaas tagged me in a Six Sentence Sunday challenge, which I decided to use to fulfill a prompt for my clone x reader bingo card. I... was unsuccessful with the 6 sentences thing... but 10 is still pretty damn impressive for me, so... here yuh go.

Btw, this is totally canon in Doc's Misadventures - it's just a couple arcs ahead of Breaking Point so enjoy a little glimpse of better things ahead! Alternatively, it can totally be read as a gender neutral stand alone!

There were many types of silence with Crosshair: some screamed so loudly, I wanted to clasp my hands over my ears and beg him to stop, while others were gentle, as if I could feel the brush of his fingers against my skin absent even a moment’s touch. This was one of those moments, quiet and soft; even the rustle of dried foliage freshly shed from the towering trees sang only in whispers beneath our feet.

Despite the changing seasons, flowers still clung to the waning heat of fall, illustrating their grandeur in hidden bursts of color revealed only from an occasional gust of wind freeing them of the autumn blanket of fallen leaves. He said nothing as one such moment allowed just enough time for me to take note, breath catching slightly in a joyous gasp as I quickly moved from his side. When I returned with a pair of nearly gold, rosette blooms, he merely cocked his brow, but there was a fondness in the subtle tilt of his lips that left me beaming, and I happily handed him one in that same, gentle silence.

His expression briefly flashed to one of dismissal, but he quickly caught himself, jaw tensing as he seemed to struggle for several seconds over how to respond before finally, hesitantly, accepting the tiny offering. I so nearly relieved him of the uncertainty clearly overwhelming him, but held myself still, admittedly struck by the rare display of flustered doubt before me, and my glee only grew as, after far too much thought, he tentatively tucked the stem into the lip of his chestplate, cheeks darkening beneath a deep blush.

Without a word, I stepped in front of him, free hand reaching up to slip around his neck as I pulled him down into a kiss, smile beaming even as my lips toyed lovingly with his. Meeting his eyes as I leaned back, I brought my own flower to my mouth and bit into the blossom with a quiet laugh, savoring the way his eyes widened in understanding, blush growing violent. Still, I heard his short scoff after I returned to the trail before us, glancing back just in time to see him sample one of the lesser known delicacies of this stunning world with a begrudged resignation.

Ira - it depends from person to person, if it's someone they've known for a long time they'd have a really really hard time letting go but if it's someone they've only been friends with for a little bit they'd just dump the person if they're being a dick

Melika - she is so so so so so so so patient with people you can't really get her to let go of people they poured super glue all over her attachment tendencies

Crevan - he let goes of people so extra easily, he'd still cry about it and go on his self loathing arc when he's by himself every time tho

Luke - 18-19 year old Luke took the first chance he had to pick a fight with his parents and run away take from that what you will

At the end of volumes of Black Clover is space for the “Blank Page Brigade.” This particular “brigade” is composed of the assistants (you know, those who help with art) and others from the Black Clover manga team, lead by “Captain Tabata.”

In each volume there’s a question that everyone answers. Assistants also include a drawing with their answers. I’ve compiled the answers and drawings from all published volumes (1-29), and grouped them together.

FYMB updates: spring animes and dandelions and flowers and weird yaois etc

Happy spring! So far...

... it has just been weird for the most part. I mean, we got the virus, we're still living, although, Skip Beat! translation gods hasn't updated the next chapter, we're still fighting, i mean, we are slaves to that manga, so, yeah, so far, it has been okay. Pat yourself on the back, unless you're a tumblr post engine which doesn't automatically capitalize the first letter of the start of the sentence, you're pretty much better. lol. anyway, i digress.

We all know that the winter animes are done and streamed, and I'm gonna be honest, I didn't watch the whole damn list. and also, yes, I didn't watch Attack on Titan. Me and AOT doesn't mix. It doesn't work. Let me tell you why. It freakin scares me to death. The atmosphere of that kind of anime is the atmosphere that I do not enjoy. I dont care if my life is boring. lol. i remember that time when I started it's ep 1 years ago, few minutes done and I am out. I pretty much know the premise of it, and respect that many people loved it, but I dont like it because it wont make me feel better after I finish watching an episode. that's why maybe, just maybe, i'll find a time to start watching the first ep again and give it a try. but dont quote me on that.

Black clover ended too and it saddens me that it's not sure if there's gonna be a new season, or it got cancelled. I talked to you guys about telling something about Yuno after the anime is done so here's my 2 cents, that maybe some of the readers and watchers had been thinking already. Yuno's character has been bugging me since he was revealed as prince of another kingdom. Sure, he can be beauty and grace. sure, he can be the vice captain of the strongest wizard group in clover. sure, he can have the wind sylph. Sure, he can be the fuckin prince of another kingdom, but why, o, why, does he have to be the vessel of a half elf half prince royalty too at first? the character building had some holes. the hell. if the spade arc happened before the elf arc, i can understand it. but it's the other way around, it just feels so weird. one might compare yuno to Sasuke, but sasuke have a strong clan murder back story. yuno? as early as the time he got the wind spirit, he didnt resonate to me that much. the whole character of yuno was a fan service. if black clover anime ended just like that, without any plan to have a next season or movie(like those big ones are planning to have), yuno fuckin wasted my time. lol. i might as well go in a fuckin dungeon and get myself a water spirit with a devil on the side. *note: i watch as i read the manga. i know he probably trained his ass too, but the character wasnt highlighted until the spade arc, well, the anime ended before he did something splendidly. he's one of the main characters but he wasnt highlighted for the most part. i feel like maybe i havent warmed up to him yet. i mean, i love every freakin member of black bulls, and they pretty much the supports. what a lost opportunity for yuno to shine in the anime. one time yuno resonated to me was when he's in the meeting with the captains and he wanted to save his captain. that was it, and it was in the last few eps. if im an anime watcher only, i couldnt care less what he's thinking. asta is gonna be trained by his vice captain who btw is friends with a lot of demons. why am i going to care about yuno? i am talking about the anime experience. if in manga, he'll partner with asta and fight a good fight, it sure will be interesting.

next topic! So, as you noticed, i am currently binge watching Sk8 the infinity, and i love it to bits. underground skating is super cool in this anime. I like the politics, the dark side outside of the underground skating. very intriguing to see how the two worlds collide, adam's 2 worlds, with that police chick on his back. now, don't get me wrong, i like Langa, but hell, Reki's character have some struggles. although, i am more invested in adam's story than reki's. adam is such a damaged soul. it's gonna end at ep 12 and i feel like the story needed to have a season 2. any news about it?

new spring animes are here and i am ready. i mean, might as well watch anime before we all die, isnt it? lol. just kidding. now, i've been reading manga and it's common for me to see mangas i've read years ago and i've forgotten popping anime adaptations these past few days. one anime i've started watching is IT'S TOO SICK TO CALL THIS LOVE. if you want some spring anime that include an adult man liking and borderline obsessed to a high school girl, ok, it sounded creepy, but you'll know what i mean if you watch it. lol. it's cute.

although, i wont recommend watching MARUDASE KINTARO OVA for people who doesnt like yaoi or bl at all. do not watch this. lol. it's a comedy censored yaoi, and it's like 8 minutes long. it's pretty familiar to me too so maybe i read this one as well ahemmm back from my weird years.

lol. i maybe will do a separate post for censored comedy hentai anime that is hentai in manga, but let me just rant for a bit. it's always so disappointing when an anime who is sexy and clearly hentai or hentai in manga posing to be just ecchi with censorship. can these companies just tell if their animes are hentai or not, and if not, please just cut the hentai scenes. and if it's hentai, acknowledge it as a hentai, blurred the dang thing, and just purely made it a hentai. maybe i just dont like being teased, dudes, and maybe because i hate hentai animes that passed on as ecchi and the comedy is being highlighted. i love the uncensored censored of redo of healer with the boobs bare, but i hate animes which are pretty much made to be just ecchis when their manga is pure hentai.

Moriarty the patriot part 2 started streaming and hell, of course, i will continue watching it. I love Sherlock Holmes, as you all know. although, this very demanding side of me wants different. the SH universe has been used a hundred times. it has been spinned, adapted, inspired from, copied, drawn etc. The crime lover part of me wants something new. if you read my tags, i said that Japan loves Sherlock Holes, and hell, i mean it because they do. too much. Detective conan although have a spin on it does take a lot of inspiration from SH. every detective stories, mangas i read had some inspiration from SH. it has been milked for ideas. it saddens me sometimes when i started a detective story and it's obviously is inspired by SH. i am so thirsty of a good detective story that isnt in any way, shape or form similar to SH, similar to the cases, similar to the duo, and hell, villains similar to Moriarty. ">"

last but not least, let me just say sorry for the garbage that this post has been. im kidding. this is not a reader's digest article, dudes. lol. ok, well, this is a long post. i might end this here, and i will surely update you to the new animes that i might watch this season. it's spring, guys. go out a bit. dont forget your mask. smell the dandelions, the tulips. open your windows ffs. it's not that cold anymore. be careful and be kind.

It was so nice seeing them be so much more playful this chapter, she’s come such a long way from the beginning! (something that i am very cautious about btw because you’ve given me trust issues™️ and I fear this is some kind of calm before the storm, but I digress)

I love how they’ve basically become partners in crime, you know? Like there’s this complicity they share- I adore it. And Clover is slowly but surely starting to play into it. She could’ve chosen to go inside by herself rather than staying out with him but she chose to trust him whether she realized it or not. Albeit she could’ve seen it as choosing the lesser of two evils but I feel like for her character even that carries some meaning

Also, loved her aunt this chapter, she knows her niece well and is so supportive <3

So I do have a question, how was Clover so quick to spot and label Anthony’s actions as love? How were his feelings so obvious to her if “love doesn’t exist” to her? Or will watching Charlotte and Anthony play a part in her journey to realization that love does actually exist?

I love how they’ve basically become partners in crime, you know? Like there’s this complicity they share- I adore it. Wait this is actually such a good point! ❤️

That will be such a huge part of their whole dynamic, and how their relationship will be different than other relationships around them ❤️ Of course it has also something to do with their own personalities, but Clover and Benedict found their perfect match in each other❤️

Clover has been limited by different figures her whole life, first it was her parents, her home life and now it's the ton and their expectations and rules of the high society. Even with her uncle and aunt, they love her so much and try to give her the space that she wants as much as they can, but that is up to a point because of the society. So all her life, she had to play by certain rules even if she hated those rules.

And Benedict lets her run free.

Considering the era, what Clover has been doing since the beginning of the story would be incredibly frowned upon and her being engaged would add to those limitations by the society; she would in a way have to be more responsible, softer, nicer and such, but Benedict provides that escape from the rules she so desperately wanted 😂He doesn't coddle her unlike others, (like Anthony is doing with Charlotte for example, but again that is more about their own personalities) and ensures that space she wanted but could never get.

He only steps in when he is needed, when his role in the society would help her. He puts himself between her and the ton when they get caught, he tells people he will be there with her as a chaperone when she isn't allowed to be on her own, and even with the flowers she wasn't allowed to buy or smell, he buys them and sends them straight to her so that she can have that taste of freedom that she wants ❤️

So that partners in crime dynamic is there to stay and it'll be so fun! ❤️

So I do have a question, how was Clover so quick to spot and label Anthony’s actions as love? Because she has seen it before 😁

Clover doesn't believe in love in general, but she knows there are exceptions and she knows there is something people define as love ❤️ She has seen it with Josie and Bess, she sees it with her uncle and aunt, but she thinks she's just "too smart" to fall in love like that 😁 She's also in so much denial about love when it comes to her😂

Categorizing Precure by Symbols

I suppose this is going to be a weekly thing until I run out of ideas.

Hm.

Note: This post will be continually updated w/new Cure additions and seasons.

Cut for length...

This one’s slightly weirder than the element categories in that I tried to narrow things down to keep it as simple as possible (so you won’t be seeing all Cures listed here)...but ended up backtracking and second-guessing a lot.

Anyways, the general rules for “symbols” are the following:

A “symbol”, in this case, is defined as an image associated with a or several specific Cure(s) of each team.

That image has to have some special meaning for that Cure(s) in particular. For example, every Hugtto team member used the “heart” imagery at one point but only for Macherie and Amour does it really bear any significance since they are the Cures that represent “love.”

The exception to the rule above are group tiers, where the symbol and its meaning can be applied to the whole team. However, to avoid extra confusion, only symbols that show up few and far between will be listed.

There are a few more criteria that come with certain symbols but it’ll be easier to understand as we go through each one so...

Sun - I’d say Sunny has a closer association with the fire element than the sun but since she referenced it in her intro phrase and it’s her actual name then she counts.

Moon - Originally this post was supposed to be completely free of Form Changes. Then I remembered Cure Bright so I guess that means she’s the exception among them. *shrug*

Stars - Right, so "stars” as in astral objects. Or things that denote the idea of the sky, exceptional height/distance, potential, ambition or great aspirations. I left the “meaning” very broad to encompass as many applicable Cures as possible.

However, KiraPre as a group is excluded because their use of stars are mostly for decoration purposes.

Sea - We have so many Water cures, hard to believe that only two of them used the sea motif.

Flowers - Yaaaaa, this one.

Those are not sub-tiers, btw. Just broke them down by different kinds of flowers. So top row is just for flowers in general.

Does anybody know what Marine’s is by any chance? Erika’s heart flower is the cyclamen but that’s obviously not the same flower used to represent her as Cure Marine. I keep thinking daises but can never find any confirmation on that.

Hearts (restricted) - Omigaaaawwwd

Hearts, hearts, hearts, hearts, HEEEAAARRRRTTTSSS......!!

ASJDLFKL This one gave me such a headache because almost every season uses hearts in some form or another. Whether it’s the logo, attacks, even the hair decs, hearts are just everywhere and I’m like NO!!

Which is why I had to narrow it down to these Cures who are known to explicitly display hearts as part of their personal concept.

Don’t think I need to explain anymore on that.

Clovers - Technically, “clubs” is more accurate if we’re referring to the card suite but clovers show up so often that we’ll just go with that instead.

Fresh included as a group tier for obvious reasons. Plus, each of them represent one part of the four leaf clover: Peach (love), Berry (hope), Pine (faith) and Passion (normally “luck” but we can substitute that with “happiness”).

Diamonds - The card suite has so many different histories behind it that it’d be easier just to google it if you want to make the connection between that and the Cures.

Me, I just went with what I saw in the stock footage. :P

Spades - Same as “Diamonds.”

Wings - Again, practically almost all Cures get wings in their super forms so I couldn’t include everyone.

Egret and Ange are a no brainer. And if anyone’s questioning about Princess, well, she’s the princess of the Blue Sky Kingdom, which has a wing as their symbol.

That and she’s a Wind Cure so the description fits.

Butterflies - Yes!5 was a season that had dreams as its theme and I always thought butterflies was meant to represent that.

In truth, the most common meaning you can find for butterfly symbolism is “growth and change” which isn’t that much different from what we usually see in Precure. I mean, it’s still arguable how well (or not) the writing was for Yes!5 (I seriously can’t remember what it was about at all) but as far as motifs go, they are the only team that fully utilize butterflies.

Rainbows - Yeh.

Crowns - A seemingly minor one but one that I can’t bring myself to leave out.

I doubt we’ll be seeing this often but so far, it’s been very fitting for characters like Princess and Gelato.

Have you ever read of the saying "three dead people are a tragedy; three thousands are a statistic"?

What do I mean by that?

Oftentimes, when you have a big franchise, or a long lasting series, the authors tend to think that the only way to bring more feelings into the tale is to keep escalating the stakes, to make the risks bigger, the consequences of failure higher.

"We're no longer destroying the house, but the city! No longer the city, but the continent. No! THE PLANET!!! THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE!!!!"

And the writers feel very proud of themselves, because what's a higher stake than just killing all the things and destroying the Universe?

Well, just about anything else, it turns out.

How many planets have been blown up on screen these days? There was a few in the Star Wars franchise, one in the Star Trek Reboot, some Doctor Who stories, a hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy, quite a few in the MCU alone, and tbh TVTropes listed more of them than I can possibly remember

The thing is, how many of you guys have you cried when the planet got kaboom?

Not many, am I right?

If we’re entirely honest, if Spock’s mom hadn’t died in the ST reboot, few of us would even consider the destroyed planet a tragedy at all.

And yet it is.

But it’s actually not.

How many of us are able to grasp what the planet even IS?

Entire ecosystems, the unexplored depths of the ocean, the tropical forests, that hummingbird that just laid eggs, those turtle babies seeing the sea for the first time. A new bee’s first flower, a corvid rolling in the snow, a wolf howling to the moon, a rabbit munching on a clover patch, big cats sunning themselves. Mother deers bathing their newborns and watching them learn to stand and take their first steps. Bears sleeping away the winter, owls waking at night and sweeping on silent wings to hunt.

People!

That small farm in Kansas, another small farm in India, that cardboard home in Jakarta and another in L.A, That old abandoned temple in the heart of Bolivia, and the sacred ruins in Cambodia. That family that only now got their new baby. That mother who tries so hard to make ends meet alone, and make sure her kids don’t go hungry. That marine biologist who’s so happy to have finally mapped the sound of a whale song. That vet who just rescued a litter of kits.

All those small lives, interconnected, happening at the same time all over the world. We’re all part of the same thing, we all are earthlings first of all, in a way it is impossible for us to understand because we’ve never not been earthlings.

What does it mean then, to destroy a planet?

It’s technically an escalation from destroying a city or robbing a bank.

Technically.

Because that escalation is purely intellectual.

And completely unrealistic.

How many of you guys have come across one of these posts speaking about what a billion is, how much can a billionaire buy, what it concretely amounts to? How many of you have been able to grasp the sheer obscene wealth that represents?

If you tell me you have, I won’t believe you. I’m pretty sure even billionaires don’t truly understands what it represents beyond “above the law” and “nothing is impossible anymore” and “god on earth”. (which, is not a positive judgement at all, btw)

At this point, they might simply remove the number and put an ∞ instead. It’s about the same thing.

It’s a value too ridiculous and abstract for our brain to comprehend. That’s why people aren’t banging at their doors with pitchfork. Well. Not all people are.

The same thing applies to planet destroying. We see the thing on a screen and we think “that’s bad.”

What does our heart do? What do our gut say? Does it evokes in us the same soul deep horror that footage of war torn countries and broken bodies?

Does it make a deep visceral fear wake in your belly and tell you to fucking run!!?

Some dangers have been hardwired in our brains. Just the other day, I came across a hornet’s nest, and while I’m usually pretty chill about those flying, potentially-stinging, window-crashing morons, let me tell you that my gut was not at all ambiguous about my need to get the fuck out.

And yet, I certainly didn’t feel the same thing when Earth blipped out in the Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy, even though, technically, Earth annihilation is fairly more lethal than some measly hornets.

Granted it was probably played for laughs that time, the entire movie is a satire. But did the death star really feel scary because of its ‘planet-destroying’ ability?

I can only assume it doesn’t.

Do you want to know why?

Because it doesn’t mean anything. Invalid Data, brain does not compute.

Just like seeing numbers on a screen will never be as powerful enough as personal witness accounts and stories. Just as you won’t be able to grasp what a billion is worth the same way you will the ten bucks in your wallet.

If you change the scale of something, you also change the emotional impact.

Having a map of Florida tacked to your wall will not bring you back memories of your family trip to Disney World the same way your photo album will. Because the scale is human. It’s personal. It calls back feeling through your gut, it makes you laugh as you see a picture of your kid sister with half her face glued by cotton candy, or smile at the way your big brother took your hand and helped you through your fear of roller coasters because you really wanted to try them anyway.

A world map isn’t meant to bring back feelings.

This is why world destruction falls flat. It’s destroying the map of Florida and not your photo album.

And of course it falls flat. What do we care, then about so called ‘heroes’ stopping the world from destruction? Battling for the sake of the Universe?

We don’t. We can’t. What even is the Universe? That black tapestry with tiny and pretty little white dots? An immensity beyond thought and reckoning? It doesn’t mean anything anymore.

This is not even suspension of disbelief anymore! It’s just going beyond the scope of our ability to understand or care.

Because, WHY would we want to save the universe?

I mean, it’s controversial, granted. But, let me tell you, they could have obtained the exact same emotional response in the ST reboot if the thing destroyed had simply been a scientific vessel with Spock’s mom in.

The thing that makes you feel isn’t the planet. What even is a planet???

It’s the mom. Most people have a mom. Some even are moms. Some have lost a mom.

It’s one of three people in the saying above.

It’s a tragedy.

There might be three million other people who died on that planet, but we can’t care about those.

They’re a statistic.

TL:DR: Canon story writers. Please stop feeling very clever about “raising the stakes”. All you’re doing is making it impossible to care about your story.

A late day two of @femslashfeb: Bloom

Maki/Miu--this was a suggestion by an anon, which I still don’t mind getting suggestions for btw. There’s a mention of panties and some swearing, but it’s brief and non-sexual.

“You had some sort of plant growing magic when you were a kid, then?”

Hearing it repeated back to her in Miu’s voice made Maki’s nerves grow. She kept it locked inside, trying to not display it other than fidgeting with the cushion below her. It was less obvious with the sheet over her, clipped around her neck to prevent hair from falling onto her as Miu snipped away. The words had just come out during the peace that surfaced with the relaxing haircut. Maki’s head felt pounds lighter, and it had somehow lightened her guard as well.

Now though, she regretted the admission.

“Yeah... at least I think so.” No going back now. Maki’s eyes dropped to the ground. “I used to play house with my friend. When we were playing together, when I felt so happy I could float right up to the ceiling, I noticed that plants around me would grow faster. Flowers would bloom. That sort of thing. But since then, since the cult...”

She trailed off, pressing her lips together. Bit by bit since then she’d been reclaiming the emotions closed off from herself from such a young age. She couldn’t imagine those wildly happy feelings existing at all anymore, let alone having them herself.

“I don’t know, it hasn’t happened since then. I probably imagined it all. I know, I sound like I’m crazy...”

“No way.” Miu surprised her with that answer, making Maki jump slightly in place. “I’ve heard way crazier things than that. I’ve seen crazier things. And I don’t think you’d make up something like this. That’s not something you’d lie about.”

Maki felt her cheeks warm. She pressed her lips together. For a moment, it felt like the frost that covered her heart had melted just a bit. “Thanks.”

Miu grunted acknowledgement, and focused back in on Maki’s hair. Maki didn’t move or speak, not wanting to distract her and ruin the cut, but she felt more comfortable than she had before. The memories she held of being a child might still be some delusion that she made up as a weird coping mechanism to the torture she’d faced growing up, but somehow it felt good that Miu had put her belief into her.

“Alright! All done. Here, have a look.” Miu picked a hand mirror up off of where she’d set it down on the grass. She handed it off to Maki. “Ya girl is gorgeous, brilliant, and handy as fuck with the scissors. I’m practically a fucking goddess, I know.”

She didn’t respond to Miu’s crowing. It was just a part of what made up the other girl’s personality. Instead she focused in on the mirror, taking it from Miu so that she could see her reflection. A girl that Maki hardly recognized stared back at her, with wide red eyes that looked more innocent than the cold hard ones she’d seen many times before, and pink dusting her cheeks, and hair cut into a short bob that framed her face, giving her a more mature feminine look than before.

As she studied the girl in the mirror, the blush grew more pronounced, amazed at what Miu had been able to do to her, with just a simple haircut.

“Hey check it out, a dandelion,” Miu said suddenly, dragging her from her awed state. “Right there.”

She was pointing to the ground by Maki’s feet. The grass was a little fuller, with clovers and longer blades and, yes, a dandelion had popped up its fluffy yellow head just where her toes ended. It hadn’t been there before they began their session. The sight had Maki’s awe returning, although she didn’t know if Miu could understand the depth of her amazement.

“You’re... really impressive, Miu,” she murmured, half hoping that Miu wouldn’t catch it.

No such luck. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Miu’s own face burst into a deep shade of red. No wonder--Maki didn’t hand out compliments very often.

Miu coughed, trying to cover up her clear embarrassment, though as she spoke she stammered and stumbled over her words. “Y-yeah! You’re damn right! I-I’m so fucking impressive, I’ll blow your panties off!”

Maki half-smiled, amused by the reaction. She hummed vague acknowledgment. Reaching down, she plucked the flower by the stem, tucking it into her pocket. Maybe what happened back at the orphanage hadn’t been as imagined as she thought after all.

She just never expected Miu to be the one to bring that back out of her.
