We got the earth and the sky, but has anyone asked about what you think of Abzu?

i love abzu!!! another one i have watched the gdc talk for which you can watch here!!

the two big things in abzu are the fish animations and the overall environment lighting - lets start with fish!! there are a lot of them. and when you want to animate a lot of things, your computer will explode. this is specifically when you animate things with bones, how a lot of computer things are animated

luckily one thing that gpus can be really good at is drawing a tonnnn of the same object really fast, using something called instancing. as long as its the same mesh and material, it can be rendered a ton with just a single draw call (like i am talking hundreds of thousands). so lets make 10 thousand fish. unluckily this doesnt work with skeleton animations. luckily you dont need them! especially with fish

even though all the objects need to be the same mesh and material, doesnt mean they cant have different input. not only that but shaders let you modify individual vertexes, so, what if you just take all 10000 fish and wiggle them along an axis, like this

and give them all slightly different inputs so they arent all doing the exact same animation, maybe by giving them each their own unique number. now you have 10 thousand fish swimming around, wiggling, at almost zero rendering cost

these are all individual 3d models and all their animations are running in the shader !

the other way they animated fish without giving them bones was through something called blendshapes - these are usually used for stuff like facial animations, where you move vertices around to your desired "shape" (so like maybe your default face is :| but you edit the vertices so your character goes :> etc), and keep track of the difference between each vertex's position and its original position so you can move it whenever you want

that doesnt need any bones so they used this for things like fish going CHOMP and fish making sharp turns

for the actual environment, they experimented with a bunch of things like using actual volumetric lighting, but in the end they found that just using fog worked best!! they did tweak it a bit though - they had a "zone" between where the fog started to get thick and when the fog just ended up being a solid color where they dimmed any lighting - this really helped the background geometry stick out and give that underwater feel (left is without dimming the lights, right is with dimming the lights!! fun to think about how firewatch did something similar but changing the fog color based on depth rather than literally dimming the lighting)

they also let different volumes have their own fog value, so if there was say a cave off in the distance, it could have less fog than the surrounding area for clarity & also made the fog look a bit more volumetric

and the other huge thing that helped was "portal cards" - not an official term but its what they called them, basically just quads they could stick in any place where they needed to make something "stick out", like a cave, or a hilltop that blended with the background too much. the card sampled the depth of objects behind it, and used that 0 to 1 value to map a color to it. and then the closer youd get to these cards, the more transparent theyd get, until youre right on top of it and you dont need the objects to stick out of the background anymore!! here you can see a Me, but very dark, and then i slide the card over it. the black and white is the camera depth of all objects behind the card, minus the depth of the card. and mapping that to a color makes me stick out way more than i was initially!! then as you swim closer to me, the card fades away, until you pass the card completely

these portal cards were also used to make the light beams poking out from the surface, theyre just animated a bit!! you can see how the portal cards affect the look of things in this frame breakdown

and one other thing thats pretty prominent that wasnt touched on in the talk is all the caustics on the ground, those little wobbly light things you see underwater. but those were probably? just added to every shader as a "add this caustics texture on top based on the with the texture mapped to the world x and z position and only if the object is facing up"

Vergil had a problem that he refused to talk about: he got insanely jealous whenever you were around Dante. He couldn't, and refused to, explain why he felt this way, but he did.

Maybe it was because Dante was so charismatic and easy to talk to, and he wasn't. Maybe it was because Dante didn't look as intimidating as he did, or maybe it was because Dante had the confidence to do things Vergil wouldn't even dream of doing.

Whatever the reason was, it made Vergil very insecure and envious of Dante whenever he saw the two of you together--just watching you greet his brother made his blood boil. He stepped through it and emerged in your living room, where you were reading a book.

"Y/N." His voice suddenly echoing from the corner startled you, but you quickly composed yourself.

so heres my pitch for what happens before dimple shows up in the icmhwau:

teruki and mob are hanging out in the middle of one of black vinegars soccer fields. its after school and the sky is heavy and grey, but it hasnt started to rain just yet. mob snuck a milk carton on his way out so he could come see one of the stray cats that sometimes wander onto the school grounds. this one he knows from sitting by for terukis soccer practice over the last few months.

while hes bent down, making soft sounds and petting it, teruki is standing behind him, hands jammed in his pockets and sneering bc he doesnt do. exactly great. not being the center of attention. hes tapping his toe and waiting for mob to get it over with so they can go when theres this big crack of thunder overhead and the cat goes skittering off toward the trees- just as the sky opens up and theres one of those heavy late spring downpours.

teruki is taken offguard, bracing for the rain, when he realizes hes still stood there dry. mobs got a hand up, having thrown a barrier over them reflexively, and humming his disappointment. he stands, dusting his knees off, and when he turns around teruki tries to look like he hasnt just been standing there watching the whole time.

"can we go now?" rude. but no more rude than he usually is, so mob doesnt really mind. he hums his affirmation but pauses, and then shakes his head. teruki frowns and turns fully toward him in response.

mob kinda stands there, hands flexing and unflexing cause hes really not good at putting things into words in this au. it drags on long enough that teruki is just starting to pull away with a scoff when he is stopped cold like he took a stone to the head.

"teru."

that gets his attention in a big way that makes his stomach roil. mobs never addressed him like this before- maybe a soft hanazawa-kun when he needed to, but the nickname cuts straight to the core and he is on guard immediately.

"i.. was thinking."

and now he is feeling outright defensive. a thousand scenarios playing out right like is mob sick of this? is this going to be bad news? is he trying to sugar coat it? and then, worst case scenario; mob steps forward, and starts to reach for him. his hands are small and bruised, little scars and bandages wrapped around his fingers. teruki put those there, and it feels like an intimacy too sacred and mortifying to be broached.

so teruki panics.

"DONT TOUCH ME!" slapping his hands aside. "you just laid hands on that disgusting vermin, its probably diseased."

and mob stands there looking so shocked teruki feels a thrill of success. derailed. whatever was about to happen has been successfully derailed. he preens, starting to turn to pull the lead before mob can recover, but mob speaks before he can get very far.

"cats are actually very good at grooming." tone flat, dry. it gets under terukis skin. mob never objects.

"yeah right. like im going to hear about hygiene from a brute like you." baseless, and mean, the kind of cutting comment he throws around easy but it seems to catch mob off guard this time.

hes frowning, brows turned down and his hair ruffled by a wind that cant reach them through his barrier. teruki sneers and mob shoves him, hands splayed into his ribs in frustrated defiance. teruki scoffs and pushes him tumbling back onto his ass, standing over him.

& its just instinct tbh, at this point, learned experience from watching teruki get backed into corners with his mouth, when mob mutters, "youre mean." and when teruki looks surprised, he continues. "youre a very mean person."

which teruki is taken aback by. "oh, as if! you dont have a high horse, not when youre just some commoner who happens to listen to instruction better than the rest of them. like you havent picked plenty of your own fights, too." that sort of thing. "its embarrassing that youd even try to come after me when youre just some- some nobody."

& its clearly reaching its mark bc as teruki talks, mobs curling his fingers into the grass and bits of dirt and torn blades are starting to curl up into the stagnant, humid air around them. his hairs started to lift and he looks unhappy.

"oh dont look so surprised. you knew what this was. and beyond that- you dont scare me, kageyama. i could kick your ass and still-"

hes cut off by this dizzying woosh, this spike of energy that makes his head spin, and the vertigo only intensifies as he looks around and realizes the barrier is gone; its not that the rain isnt landing on them, its that the rain isnt landing at all.

mob was definitely not radiating unadulterated power like this last time. he may have.. miscalculated his approach.

& you can imagine it from there. teruki panics and lashes out first, which pushes mob over the edge and suddenly theyre fighting and its UGLY. it makes their initial fight look like a joke. it makes the soccer field look like a battleground. it knocks teru half conscious, held by the throat in mobs sweaty, burning grip with blood dripping into his eyes when hes got an abrupt sense of nausea and something eye piercingly green shoots out his nose with an unceremonious, "oh jesus, kid."

im not like, a writer, but you get the idea. fill it in to be better than i could do it LOLOL mob tried to finally put into words, somewhat, what he feels about teruki, which made teruki FREAK because he doesnt know how to be vulnerable like that, he lashes out at mob, mob lashes out back, the autistic immovable object vs the unstoppable adhd force leading into an rsd death spiral. messy. awful. mob knocks the snot (dimple) out of him lololol

i think i asked before but i cant find it 😅, but i was wondering what youd recommend for someone to look into who's only just now starting to get into digital art? like if you could recomment certain programs or devices or just any advice? also your work is rlly rlly cool btw

start with a free program like medibang, firealpaca, or krita or if u have windows just fuck around in mspaint tbh. (don't let people lie to u about mspaint it can be used for really good artwork people r just weird about it for some reason) if u wanna use ur phone ibispaint is still pretty good. just watch the ad and u get free things for like. idk what. 18 hours? still good.

for things like tablets there's plenty of cheap small starter graphics tablets out there for like 50 USD or less, idk what your currency is. A huion display is what I use but I've heard good things about their regular pen tabs too. Do your own research there, but you really don't need a super fancy tablet tbh. Also don't let people lie to you, you can use a mouse to draw it's not impossible. it's difficult but like it's possible LOL. I don't recommend it long term though it can fuck up your wrist.

I use paid products but I don't recommend that for beginners anyways. just get something free and have fun with it, that's honestly like the most important thing. Just have fun, don't worry about perfection or making something look good at first. Just enjoy the process because that's the most important thing anyways. Experiment a bunch and fuck around, eventually you'll learn things as time goes on cause that's just how it be.

Don't worry about the overwhelming amounts of settings on art apps right now either, all you really need to know is layers, brushes/erasers, eyedropper tools, color wheels, and select/transform tools since they're the more important ones anyways. I would recommend simplifying your app layouts to those core things if Possible, but if not then just remember where they are and only pay attention to those for now.

I hope u have fun starting out :] it can be overwhelming at first but it's really enjoyable i prommy.

Youd be out for a few drinks, the two of you hanging out, drinking, throwing darts. Just having some fun together.

And it'd be as you retrieved your darts, that some assclown barged into you.

Youd try and play it off, but the asshole would demand an apology and when you bluntly refused, the assclown's friends crowded you.

And seeing this, youd go off.

Youd kick the individual shit out of each of them.

Of course, as things tend to do in Hell, devolved into a bloodbath, you effortlessly using your skills to tear them apart.

At the end you stood amidst a room of bloody bodies, the few survivors releasing the occasional moan or groan.

Blitzø just stood there, staring at you in awe the entire time.

When you were finished, he totally gushed over you, the Imp thinking you were the collest thing ever.

Blitzø will absolutely bug you to no end untill you showed him some of your moves. The Imp actually listening and taking the lessons seriously.

Of course he'd never be as good as you, but he would pick up a few moves. And the day he finally used a move, he'd run to you, proudly telling you about it.

The Imp oh so proud of himself, taking your lessons very seriously.

Moxxie

You and Mox would be at a music store, Moxxies lil guitar having broken a string, the two of you there to get a replacement.

Youd be fiddling with a rather nice looking guitar, Moxxie playing a few cords for you.

Of course some demons can't handle good music, so it was only a matter of time before some jack hole came up, demanding you stop.

Now, neither of you were the confrontational type, so you were happy to just handle your buisness and leave.

But the demon asshole made sure to tell you he was happy to see you stop playing, and well, after he insulted him one last time, you snapped, kicking the demons ass.

You left him an inch from death, the demon splayed out at your feet, his teeth sprinkled across the shop floor.

Cleaning your knuckles, you gave Mox a big ole smooch, your thespian utterly love struck.

And the shop owner was quick with tending to your needs, so you were out of there right quick.

Then you and Mox went home, your Imp playing you a ballad, showering you in adoration. Making sure you knew how much he loved you.

Millie

When Millie discovered your abilities, seeing you utterly demolish a gang of Sinners single handedly, she fell in love all over again.

She swooned over you, wanting to see your moves. And you of course obliged, showing her a few moves, your lady Imp picking them up quite well.

Youd go on to teach her a fair bit And Millie would pick it up pretty well. She was already a very physically adept fighter, so she could pick up the basics right quick.

Now she wasn't as good as you, she was always too heavy handed, but she was still extremely capable and as much as she loved your lessons, Millie was particularly fond of your sparing matches.

The way you'd tussle and pull and throw. Bodies grinding against each other, the two of you all huffing and puffing.

And then the fun began, you often getting hands on experience with just how capable your Imp S/O really was.

Loona

When Loona first saw your ability, she thought it was the most bad ass thing ever.

And she was sure to tell you as much.

But...

Well, with the knowledge of your fighting ability, she began using you as a threat. And I mean she used your constantly.

Did someone disrespect her?

"Hey, My S/O can kick your ass!"

Did someone overcharge her tab at a bar?

"Hey watch it, my S/O will kick your ass!"

Was Moxxie just on her nerves for some reason.

"Watch it fucker, my S/O can kick your ass!"

The funiest part was, well, Loona was probably more capable in a fight. The girl literally working as an assassin for multiple years.

Of course you'd never fight Moxxie, that would mean picking a fight with Millie, and that was the furthest thing from a good idea.

That's not to say you didn't kick ass for her, because you certainly did.

But you made sure Loona didn't have a say in who's ass you kicked. Although you probably would have to put your foot down eventually, telling her you weren't just a bodyguard for her to use as a threat.

And even though she'd be huffy about it, she'd concede, promising to tune it down. You and Loona sharing a tender moment when you fought together.

Overall i wanted to know have you read The epilogue or homestuckv2 and what do you think of it, or have you read it?

I skimmed all of the epilogues and hs2 two years ago so i know what happens to each character in each timeline. I ACTUALLY GENUINELY HATE THEM.

I dont think i have to state that the writing decisions were horrible BUT HS2 OHHHH MY GOD hs2 actually makes me fume. It takes all the artistic intent with homestucks visual presentation and character design choices AND THROWS THEM OUT THE WINDOW?

Homestucks art and animation is so important to it. The design philosophy is literally the easiest thing to understand ever- the adults all have unique shapes and look like adults because they are adults and the children are small because theyre children!!!! BUT IN HS2 THEY ALL STILL LOOK LIKE TEENAGERS? It feels like comparing the 90s cats movie to the 2019 one its like that for me. LET ME EXPLAIN

The first one is a strange ambitious story for its medium, playing with the conventions people expect to see from something like it and using its cliches to its advantage and making them enjoyable. Theyre both so fun to look at and watch and have a huge cast with something for everyone, its a unique and strange experience that really nothing else can provide, and they will never leave you!

Then the second ones while they have things that are. Technically impressive and constructed well with the visuals- they completely miss all the artistic intent of the original and the very simple reasons the way they were built the way they were. It feels like a spit in the face of people who were really engaged in the original

DONT TKAE THIS TANGENT TOO SERIOUSLY Im just trying to say. I think the epilogues and hs2 feel really corporatised and mean spirited i cant enjoy them. I think dirkjake divorce is funny and can be interesting but otherwise i DONT CARE ABT ANYTHING ELSE GOING ON IN THERE ITS ALL SO BORING AND MEAN.

It really does sadden me because there was so much left to be explored and such a compelling cast of characters to work with and subjects in the air the tackle but NO. And all the charm of the presentation style was just Gone. IM NOT A FAN.

Hehe i was talking abt this with a friend but i think if you were to truly try and tackle something like homestuck with a cast as beloved as its and get them Correct youd need to assemble a team who are willing to dedicate themselves to doing character studies and charting out all their arcs and playing with their themes that were established previously.

I love homestuck with all my heart and i truly believe a continuation of canon could be really good in the hands of people who deeply care abt Homestuck (not just certain characters but Everything that went into it) but the post canon we got WAS NOT IT. Im a hater 👎

ok, not bashing you or anything in this post i was in the process of gathering lines and rewatching scenes from the (out of order) episodes i made my siblings watch and this ask is the perfect time to present my wacky thought process but first things first before we get started!

muants did exist before mystic mayhem........*points to the mutant turtles*. also there would have been experiments before the brothers because you dont have a "finally it worked, my greatest moment" if you didnt experiment for the best final result. draxum also had been working on improving his mutagen/working back up to the mutagen that made the boys after his lab was destroyed.

and! clem did not have a cloaking brooch or one obvious to the eye. here are the confirmed clocking brooches in the show, sunita's and big mama's staff's:

both of which I believe need some sort of activating motion. now clem simply transforms head down:

now this doesn't prove anything except that clem can transform back and forth between his human and non-human form. big mama can transform into a human due to her innate powers, but we can't say if thats whats going on with clem because some of the mutants have powers themselves.

and this is where things get confusing. when warren comes into shop this happens:

WARREN "Uh, an anonymous source told me this is where you get some... enhancements."

CLEM "Huh?"

WARREN "Mutant enhancements. Mystical mu—"

a source told him where to get enhancements for someone in his predicament pointing towards an established community for mutants. i dont believe something that coherent would have been established between mystic mayhem and newsworthy. more on whether or not theres a community of mutants later in this post.

warren uses the word mutants, clem does not remark on this. if he was a yokai and this was his first encounter with a mutant, i think he would have remarked on the word usage. (unless the mutant community has help from yokai, which if anyone has anything on that i would love it)

warren additionally follows immediately up by explicitly called the mutant enhancements as mystical enhancements. now this could mean again, mutants mixing with yokai, but im leaning towards "enhancements so good youd call them mystical"?? im actually not sure with this one because i dont know what episodes came before this because again, paramount plus has these episodes out of order

so this is confusing because this is so ambiguous it can be read so many different ways. clems a mutant and hired by yokai. clems a yokai that helps mutants. everything in there is stolen. everything there is made for mutants. actually its a yokai store, but yay mutant customers! who knows!

ok now onto the next thing i noticed: repo

i think repos a recently mutated guy, but not recent as in a couple days or weeks after mystic mayhem, but more like months.

reason why i think he's recently mutated is mikey's line here:

MIKEY: Dude, you better hide.  There’s a human guy around here. 

Mikey here is clearly referencing back when repo was a human. donnie likely frequents dumps like repo's but maybe not so often they hear rumors about specific dumps, or they cycle through a couple.

Repo's reaction to them also isnt "omg another mutant like me!" although i dont think that would have been in his personality to do so. still, he seems pretty used to seeing other mutants and he has successfully adapted to his new body and made it work for his business. his customers clearly dont mind or definitely know because theres a scene where he trying repoing some old lady's oxygen.

further more, when asked if the boys can do anything for Repo, he immediately knows a frustrating mutant, and has opinions on his personality:

REPO:I need you to get an RV [holds up pamphlet with picture of the RV]  from a real shady mutant.

this implies a long history (possibly two years total, where Todd could have been mutated/been mutated) where Repo was trying to get his RV and Todd had been using his niceness powers

ADDITIONALLY CAUSE I JUST REMEMBERED

there was a screenshot of a yokai bulletin board or something and several mutants were on there? does anyone know what episode was on there? that could prove a yokai mutant communities connection and make or break everything in this post asdfsdf

I just want to say that I'm so grateful that Mikoto and John (and maybe other alters in their system too? saying this just in case) were ever written. Being a system who had just discovered that only over a year ago, I can almost see myself, no, I can almost see *us* in every part of their story up until now. And in a way, I feel like I've also... grown with them? If that makes sense?

I have been following MILGRAM for quite a while, enough to be there when MeMe was just released. Back then, I still thought that I was certainly a singlet (didn't have DID), despite how one of my alters - I will refer to her as my sister from now - showed up pretty regularly at the time. That's why when I watched MeMe, I remember thinking to myself, "oh shit, this guy's just like me, and because [insert internalized ableism here] I'm saying he guilty then." But then we all know what's got confirmed 😂 Funniest thing is, a short while before that, I also came to term about being a system. Dammit, to think about it, it felt like a second confirmation 😭😭😭😭

Now that I have accepted who we really are, the release of Double and their second voice drama feels exceptionally special to me, as the host of our system. John and Mikoto's situation right now really reminds me of us last year. My sister and I specifically, respectively. At that time, I tried hard to deny the fact that I am not alone in my head, and that we are entirely separate people. It took me a while (with a few tarot spreads. fuck. I'm a Mikoto kinnie now) to know that we actually are... and some actual, honest conversations to know that she actually loved me, rather than wanting to harm me... Yeah. Yeah. You see what I'm talking about? That's why I'm really rooting for Mikoto and John to have better communication... Ah, maybe if Mikoto watched "his" own second trial MV, he would understand...

That being said, I'm still not sure on what to vote... When I first watched Double and listened to the second voice drama, I thought to myself, ouch, ok, guilty because John clearly seems to be the alter who knows more right now and that would keep him fronting more to interrogate. But after a while, my opinion... changed? I don't want Mikoto to be affected too much from the verdict and maybe going dormant because of that. John maybe still there for the interrogation but fuck, I don't think he's ever been without Mikoto for a long time and I'd hate to see his heart breaks. Maybe innocent is the better solution after all for the whole system, as it might soothe Mikoto's mood and his mindset. I also trust that MILGRAM's writer team know what they are doing and therefore would not "kill off" John. Maybe they will just let him be inactive for a while if they are voted innocent, given that he's finally satisfied with our decision...

(Yes, I do know innocent = forgiven and guilty = not forgiven and I'm deciding while knowing that. I'm just calling them innocent and guilty because I'm more used to it while speaking in English.)

Hmm, that was a longer rant than I expected. I don't know how to conclude really, so I'll say something that would sound entirely unrelated 😔 If I remember correctly, prisoners can hear us audiences right? If that's really true, I just want to scream to Mikoto and John that it's 100% ok to be a system! To not be alone inside your mind! To exist alongside another person in your system and love them! It's ok to just be yourselves! And please please please fucking find a way to communicate with each other!!!

growing up i very quickly realized that i wasnt getting crushes like the other kids were. as early as second grade i started trying to force myself to like the boys in my class. id, like, look around the classroom at the start of every new school year and look for the next boy to have a "crush" on. It sounds kind of funny looking back but like i remember how desperate i felt doing it. i remember one year i genuinely hated every boy in my class with a burning passion and, if nothing else, i remember the feeling of being wrong. i, a 4th (maybe 3rd?) grader, felt isolated and gross because i couldnt force a crush for a year.

i had known none of the other ones were really crushes, but it wasnt the romance i wanted it was the connections. i wanted to be able to join the girls talking about their crushes and i wanted to have a reason to try talking to boys; i wanted to be liked.

in 6th grade i think was the first time i didnt try to force a crush. i dont remember much from that year but i know that i didnt feel good. youd think that, as an arospec, i would have enjoyed the break from faking romance but at that point i didnt understand that my feelings werent quite real. i knew they werent like everyone elses, but i really wanted them to be even if it meant lying a bit to myself on the way. i felt wrong and weird.

in seventh grade that was when covid hit and everyone was quarentined, and also that is the year that holds my worlds most obvious example of my aromanticism ever. genuinely think back to this and go "how didnt i figure it out sooner"

i convinced myself i had a crush on my at-the-time best friend. there was no crush by the way, i judt knew i liked him more than all my other friends and to my socially deprived brain that meant it had to be romantic right? well he didnt like me back and literally i went, watched like two YouTube videos on something or other, and was over it. because the feelings were never genuine. it was never love it was a desire to be close with someone

8th grade was the first time i actually fell in love. by then i had figured out im a lesbian, and i met this girl named Jane. She was literally everything you could want in a girl and i fell HARRDDDDDDD i was so in love dont even. but I found that my capacity to love her fluxuated. the love was always there, but some days it was more platonic than anything. sometimes thr platonic periods would stretch for weeks. sometimes it would switch between platonic and romantic multiple times a day. it confused me and honestly? it scared me a lot. i distanced myself from her and eventually we broke up (for seperate reasons but this def contributed)

that really messed with me because now i was left with two understandings: i can definitely experience romantic attraction, and the romantic attraction can change at the drop of a hat.

after a lott of time and research i finally realized and accepted that im aromanticflux (will go into detail if necessary) and you know what? it didn't make me feel better. if anything it made me feel worse; i felt like such an asshole for getting in a relationship if it was always going to end.

now i am. Still coming to terms with my identity but i am learning to love and be kind to myself. the point of this whole thing is. youre never alone. there are eight billion people on earth, at least one of them is going through the exact same thing as you right now. you are not any less of a person because of your attraction or lack thereof
