Rereading Dark Rise so I can read Dark Heir and know what's going on and oh man... they really made Cyprian into the perfect Steward huh. It's explicitly stated - the Steward mentality is that something or someone who was bad or will be bad will always be bad and that cannot be changed. How they react to Violet is telling - despite them having known her once they all learn that she's a Lion all of the Stewards suddenly become hostile. They are outright planning on killing her. Even after that she's the exception. And yet when the truth about the Cup is revealed, Cyprian is the first to swear that he'll never drink. He's described for much of the book as the perfect Steward - and to an extent he is. He believes so strongly that good and bad cannot coexist that he cannot fathom making that choice. If you are taught your entire life that bad is the enemy why would you put the enemy into your own body.

god the parallels make me unwell. the way in book 1, Berkley says that they're actually sorry and grieving for Praecursoris bc he is a dragon and was only doing what his captain told him to do, because Praecursoris would not have thought it on his own as he does not care for king and country. But then in book 4, Temeraire is saying to Laurence that Laurence did it on Temeraire's behalf, that Laurence would not have thought it on his own as he cares, so very much, for king and country, even to the point of dooming him.

it's the year of our lord 2024 and i spent the last week and a half rereading percy jackson and the olympians for the first time in many many years

it's still delightful, the last olympian is such a solid book end to the first series, i love these children even after all this time

You have no idea how happy I am to see that other people like you don't like blades 2 as well. Like yes it was decent, but on the same level as book 1 in the LEAST.

And I agree, book 3 seems like an excuse to get fans off of their back about the writing. The finale felt extremely disappointing, compared to the thrill you could feel in book 1 end

Yeah, I’m still gonna play book 3 and (foolishly) hope that it’ll be better. But those hopes aren’t too high because book 2 was not a good set up for book 3 at all in my opinion. There’s so much going on. I don’t like that Valax is a part of our friend group now. However, the group dynamics were off long before that if I’m being real. Mal’s route was ruined for me.

When I was going through and deleting my screenshots the other day, I reread the “You slept through it scene” and just felt a renewed sense of hurt and anger at him and really all of our friends. Mal caught a lot of heat from me specifically because he’s my LI and the one who said such an awful thing. But honestly, the rest of the group essentially agreed with him by expanding on what he said (Imtura and Nia) or not saying anything at all (Tyril) and only getting on one accord to exclude MC.

And then on top of all of that, there are quite a few holes that really should be patched up. The plot was a mess for the majority of the story. Tbh it was almost giving Endless Summer because they were locking important information behind diamond scenes and in the lore tablets.

So all this to say that at this point in time, I no longer have faith that PB can handle complex storytelling. Their parent company and higher ups (unsurprisingly) only care about money. And the writers themselves are too lazy and too biased. Does that mean they can no longer write enjoyable stories? No, of course not. But I do think they need to rein it in and be a bit more realistic about what they can handle right now because there’s nothing wrong with a simpler book/plot that’s aware of what it’s trying to accomplish. And it’s clear that they were far too ambitious with Blades 2

Okay, so I know I'm shouting to the void here and you guys probably want mdzs updates instead of my rambling about the more obscure novel that I started reading before mdzs was a blip on my radar, but I'm going mental over here and this is what you're getting.

I'm just so Normal about Jiang Ting saying "Don't test me. I'm on your side." And when I say normal, I mean completely normal levels of Absolute Unhinged.

Because he will fail the test every time.

"Don't test me." When Yan Xie questions him on why he hid the packet of drugs, of course it's suspicious. Of course he lies. (Though is it a lie, that he wanted it for himself, to hide the evidence that will lead Yan Xie further to the truth) The truth will damn him, the lies will damn him, what else can he do?

"Don't test me." When Yan Xie asks why he wasn't tortured by the drug lord when he was captured, he asks back, "Who says I wasn't?" Yan Xie's anger at the lie, at the omission he knows is there was real. But the truth will damn him more, that sensory deprivation was the gentlest form of torture, because why would a drug cartel need to be gentle with a cop?

"Don't test me." When Yan Xie drops a recorder in his pocket to listen in as Jiang Ting interrogates Li Yuxin, and lies to her about being the betrayer, and they're texting right next to each other. He can't help the small panic that Yan Xie had been listening in. Because that was a lie, but it held too much truth, that to be betrayed there had to be relationship before. He failed the test, only to see Yan Xie's final message while waiting outside the operation room, because Yan Xie was dying in the next room, and his message was "What are you afraid about? Why don't you trust I'll help you?"

"Don't test me." When Yan Xie loses his temper and does test him, when he's a little too violent because he's being blocked from investigating and tries to force Jiang Ting to the martyr's cemetery. He apologies to Jiang Ting softly, wiping the water away with a gentleness Jiang Ting doesn't believe he deserves. When his feet are burned because Yan Xie needs answers - answers that he cannot and will not give, despite everything, Yan Xie again apologizes and tends the burns. Yan Xie wasn't in the wrong suspecting him, and he's failed every test, but Yan Xie is the one who apologizes and realizes he's gone too far. Except he hadn't gone far enough to get to the truth that would have Jiang Ting fail once again.

"Don't test me." When Bu Wei jumps off the bridge and tries to take Jiang Ting with her. He sees too much of himself in her - Yan Xie sees too much of Jiang Ting in her - but he'd let her go to save himself. Except then she jumped and that wasn't how it was supposed to end, because there had to be something after the realization that the worst betrayal wasn't being left behind. When he looks at Yan Xie and tells him it's up to you. To turn Jiang Ting in or not, to believe him or not please, don't believe him he'll accept whatever Yan Xie decides he is, a traitor or friend. He cannot trust, cannot give his faith, and it's up to Yan Xie to decide if he can still accept that.

(And that's a whole different rant about how Jiang Ting cannot define himself, how he can only mold himself into what other people want him to be, say what they want him to say, because the only time he tried to choose who he wanted to be, his whole team died and he was left in a coma for three years. I'll be Unhinged about that in a perfectly normal way another day)

"I'm on your side." When Yan Xie has seen the orphanage's records, followed the evidence to it's natural conclusion, that all the times Jiang Ting had lied and omitted to save himself were finally exposed. Yan Xie has deleted the only picture of Jiang Ting on his phone and has already broken his own heart when Jiang Ting asks, "Do you still believe in me? - It's better you don't."

"I'm on your side." When he kisses Yan Xie after all the cards are on the table, as tears run down Yan Xie's face while the King of Spades watches for any flaw. He points a gun at Yan Xie's head, ready to pull the trigger that will keep Yan Xie from coming after him and tells the truth for the first time. "I love you, Yan Xie." In front of his adoptive family of drug lords, in front of the man who betrayed him and that took him in as a brother, in front of the bodies of the people he had just mercilessly shot down, as the Queen of Hearts, whose own heart is enchained by hatred and thorns caused by the drugs he can't escape, he tells the truth, which can only be accepted as a lie.

"I'm on your side." When Yan Xie finds the evidence that Chief Lu is lying, that Jiang Ting went undercover to get rid of the drug cartel once and for all and he realizes that his wavering faith in Jiang Ting was expected. That he was the one who failed that time, even though it was necessary for the King of Spades to take Jiang Ting back. That despite that, Jiang Ting had still left him a way out and saved his life. And Yan Xie is going to drag Jiang Ting home, no matter how dangerous.

"I'm on your side." When Jiang Ting asks him, "why are you here?" when Yan Xie holds him and kisses him softly after nearly dying because he was exposed, and Yan Xie replies that no matter how harsh the betrayal - the truth - he couldn't love Jiang Ting less. That just because Jiang Ting pointed a gun at his head, didn't make Yan Xie miss him less. (You want to talk about scenes that make Mem absolutely feral, this is one.) He has to go back under cover, he has to leave again, but Yan Xie will drag him back.

"Don't test me." One last test. Yan Xie tells him to jump, that they are either going to get out of this together or die together. Yan Xie refuses to let him fail this time. No matter what, he won't leave without Jiang Ting. I'll be by your side, because living is harder than dying.

And Jiang Ting jumps.

man i have really been thinking about worldbuilding and exposition in books recently

when i was like, i don’t know, twelve-ish, I picked up this book about a teenage girl in a spy school. and i absolutely fell in love with it - I thought it was incredibly neat how the book just seemed to drop me into the middle of the story, even starting in the girl’s second year. in fact, the main character frequently referenced events from her first year (falling in love with a civilian, things ending badly, finding secret passageways, losing her mother’s trust etc.) 

and I actually really enjoyed the fact that the character had a rich and vibrant life outside of what i had read and that the book didn’t go out of its way to explain her past in flashbacks or anything. i understood the main takeaways and why she was reacting to things based on what i gleaned, and more than that i understood the growth of the character, why she was cautious in certain places but reckless in others, etc and i felt smarter for not being handed the answer on a silver platter

anyway it wasn’t until i finished the book and realized there was a sequel that i looked it up and found out that. in fact. i had started with the second book in the series.

OH. of realizing she hadn't fallen in love with a civilian so much as fallen in love with the idea of civilian life #her life being made much more difficult from the loss of trust by her mother and teachers #kind of want to go back and reread it but i feel like reading ur childhood books again sets you up for disappointment #probably not the masterpiece i remember reading #but man it made so much sense bc of COURSE cammie wouldn't just like. give me info about how the world worked. her mum was headmaster. #ofc she knew how the spy world worked smh #so when they were like FUCK the secret passageways we used to sneak out are blocked off bc we got caught last year #we need to figure out either a) another way out of the school unseen or b) find more secret passageways #and i was like !!! yeah! of course! that makes total sense and adds an obstacle for the main character to get though! #and now i also know that cammie a) was sneaking out to see her boyfriend which means it was b) a secret worth hiding for some reason #idk that second book was the only bitch i respect

I finished Nona the Ninth and.... I was going to make a whole post outlining everything that confused and frustrated me about the book (because there is A Lot) but actually I think I can sum it up much faster. This is a story mostly focused on characters and people, and I often do not care about characters and people. I far prefer worldbuilding to nearly everything else and I think the worldbuilding is there, but it is not really being explained. There is a war happening, and I understand absolutely none of it. I don't understand the sides/factions, I don't understand the politicking happening, I don't understand the goals, I don't know who is leading what or why or where they are etc etc etc. And I don't know if that's a fault on my part as a reader or that it's simply not being explained well. In relation to that, everything is unreliable narrators. And I think I am coming to the conclusion I don't like that. It means I don't know what's actually happening ever and it is beginning to really frustrate me.

I just want to know who is fighting. why are the fighting. what do they all want. I feel like some of this is explained and I just missed it... but I think some of it is absolutely glossed over #and I don't hate open ended worldbuilding entirely but I want better scaffolding #I DONT KNOW. Rewatching The Hunger Games movies with my son since he hasn’t seen them all and they’ll be gone from Netflix the end of this month. We’re through the first two (which are my favorite) and I’m deep in my Everlark feels all over again. 🥹😩

I just will never understand people who are not satisfied with the ending of Ruin and Rising.

It makes me beyond emotional. I’m so happy they get to have a simple mundane life after it all. They lost so much, they lost major parts of themselves, but I’m glad their reward is something that makes them so happy. Making sure these future orphans don’t feel lonely and unloved the way they did. Getting visits from their beloved friends. No one bothering them (until Rule of Wolves happens). They just get to.. be.

I was in near tears the first time I finished this book, and once again I want to cry rereading it. I finished that last line and put my book down and just stared at a wall for about 2 minutes straight trying not to cry. I love the ending. It’s the ending they deserved.

This is not an invite to insult the ending. If you hated it please just scroll away from this post. Don’t stress yourself or me by arguing about it. Save us both please.

#again thats not the job description #but im allowed to do it and thats whats important #still reading Detransition Baby #its so good its just taking me awhile to finish #i think the next on my list will be The Miseducation of Cameron Post #i just rewatched the movie last night but ive never read the book #im going to knit a book blanket this year #a different color for each genre #i get the feeling my blanket will be saturated with lgbtq books #most of the books on my tbr are queer books and im so excited #plus i plan on rereading at least one book that's lgbtq #called Act Cool #when i bought it the cashier said it was one of their favorite books. i got a good grade in bookstore #but on slow days at my job i tend to just order some food and read on the kindle app #and for the last two days my managers have comped my food cuz im cool #nah last night my manager didnt want to count extra cash and so he comped it #but today a different manager comped it because she said i work hard #and i only had a $100 bill and i dont think she wanted to deal with making the change #but im so excited! eating fries and reading my little trans book #its not little. its almost 400 pages. i feel like im in middle school again

I read a book I really enjoyed (a new TSG retelling, no less!) in a few eager golollops whenever I had time today. It was refreshing not to be disappointed, and I love it when the reading experience is not just mildly pleasant but gripping.

One more workday and I get our one (1) spring break day. So ready for this.

#random personal stuff #and then tonight I was rereading a comic for screenshot purposes #realized an issue was the second of a two-parter and decided to track down the first #which was from a book I'm not familiar with #and lo and behold more infuriating 90s double standards #and now I want to yell but I'll spare you all that rant #anyway at this university students and faculty get a week off for spring break and staff get one (1) day #and I've never understood why #what are we open for if no one much is here #tomorrow will be more of a down day #my boss is ordering pizza and we're going to play games #which will be nice #goodness knows we could use something chill #(as long as the reference librarian doesn't make a big deal again about my 'always' winning games #- I don't know why it so deeply bothers this grown man that I win games sometimes but apparently it does *shrug* #and he feels the need to give me grief about it) #...sorry - that's all dull #good night I'm off to immerse myself in hot water after all the crouching by shelves today
