Turns out I’m NOT done being unhinged about Temeraire, so…..

I’ve started working my way through the AO3 offerings while I wait for the last 3 books to get in at the library, and I’m having a phenomenal time sussing out which themes in the fics are common bc they’re likely canonized within the final books

Like Granby and Little have to fall into a relationship in the books, right? No one ever pairs Granby with anyone else in the fics, and Little is such a minor character in the first 6 books that I can’t imagine why he’d be the go-to for Granby over literally any other character otherwise…. Imagine meeting this guy who you think is maybe a double agent and then he starts traipsing across every continent in the world after you and then he becomes the only person who can tether you to reality and THEN he shows up asking you to pick out curtains for a pavilion for your dragon, which he is building on his grounds, so you can stay with him forever!! As much as I love the plot of book 8, sometimes I get a little bit sad that, while we got to see Granby’s honest reaction, we we were robbed of Laurence getting the news Iskierka was with Temeraires egg. You just know he would have been properly mortified.

god the parallels make me unwell. the way in book 1, Berkley says that they're actually sorry and grieving for Praecursoris bc he is a dragon and was only doing what his captain told him to do, because Praecursoris would not have thought it on his own as he does not care for king and country. But then in book 4, Temeraire is saying to Laurence that Laurence did it on Temeraire's behalf, that Laurence would not have thought it on his own as he cares, so very much, for king and country, even to the point of dooming him.

Related to that last post, I love that Laurence and Tharkay have as of VoE both had the experience of awkwardly meeting the person the other wanted to marry, followed immediately by an extremely high stakes deadly stealth mission.

This is semi-spoilerish for a character in the Temeraire series so don't read if you haven't read them yet.

I read the first 5 Tememraire books like 4 or 5 years ago and never finished the series, and finally did a reread to do just that, and I've always thought that Granby was gay cause he never said a thing about women and his biggest love in the world was dragons and to have that confirmed in Crucible is so satisfying.

Too bad he's living in a time period when it's illegal and also how he refers to it as being an "invert". And Laurence responding by telling him he's "so sorry" 🤦‍♀️
