i want to point something out, actually.

it wasn't grian's fault etho looked at the enderman- of course it wasn't. but this is one of the few times that, after his actions indirectly killed one of his allies, said ally defended him after.

etho insisted that no, actually, that wasn't grian's fault; it was him being silly, getting himself killed. he wouldn't even tolerate anyone suggesting otherwise. compare this to say, limited life: grian innocently pushes a button, killing his friend. jimmy is furious, immediately starts gnashing his teeth at grian because it doesn't matter if the trap wasn't his, this was his fault.

it's so interesting to me how grian, etho, and cleo prove over and over again just how strong they are together. they see the best in one another and they make each other better because of it. they give each other room for mistakes, room to breathe. this- at least for grian- is a long lost luxury

ikoku nikki chapter 52 // spoilers

so they finally met each other on the desert. finally face to face in a place that both understand it so, so differently. for makio, who’s security means loneliness. for asa, who deeply understand the meaning of loneliness.

just before, both were facing a very similar challenge: could i love this kid who’s loved by the woman i hate? VS could i love this woman who’s unable to love me? while asa was feeling unloved, makio was running after a time she was leaving behind without knowing. she’s not getting younger and, truth be told, anything could happen in a blink of an eye. so, to show care, makio starts to walk around the boarder before slowly starts to creep inside asa’s planet, studying the ground before making herself at home.

she wants to give asa the security of being able to stand on her own, to show her how integrated she is on her life. makio, the one who had no one to leave everything to, finally breaks the first layer of her own heart: she’s giving asa her sense of family back. she’s making sure that she’s safe, sound and loved.

but a person who lived their whole life alone can’t understand what loneliness feels like. she, who thought that she could show asa’s security in a more legal manner, never stopped to think that maybe what asa needed the most at the time was acknowledge, care, protection and love. with makio thinking “what will happen whit asa when i’m gone?” she’s not realizing how this sounds, to asa, like an early goodbye. instead of feeling secure, she’s feeling abandoned again. asa, who still can’t understand makio’s way of loving someone, believes that she’ll never find a place to call home again; never have a window for the cicadas to come in.

and makio, who’s imagination is used solely only for her writing, have to start asking herself the best way to stop fighting this feelings she’s facing now. to love someone who was once loved by someone you hate. to feel that you have someone when there’s a wolf by your side. to feel that two different people can find each other in the middle. that’s the journey they are starting right now.

also, something that i forgot to mention: asa saying “even if my brain understands it, i just can’t take it” means that she finally has a complete understanding of the whole situation and fighting for her life to not disturb makio’s life. which, in the end, makes her loneliness even wider and even harder to pass through. she understands, she gets it: makio is all that she has left but…that’s all? it’s just all a legal transaction in the end? so family is to leave something behind when your gone? does life only exist to say goodbye?

once again, yamashita-sensei proves her mastery in storytelling, in the way she manages to capture human emotions and weave a plot out of it. gorgeous. truly gorgeous.

god i wish i wouldn't have to explain the intricacies of the neopets economy to you guys to give the full context for this but. the new neopets team that took over from jumpstart pledged that they were going to curb the inflation of rare items, which is great because a lot of rare items are worth literally hundreds of millions of neopoints, they are unbuyable unless you've been playing actively for 20 years. they did this earlier with a site festival that included random loot boxes, some of which had Unbelievably Fucking Rare And Precious items worth 200 million neopoints apiece.

well.

today they have gone a step further. by releasing this year's trick-or-treat bags. and having the trick-or-treat bags be stuffed to the brim with unbelievably fucking rare stamps, weapons, paint brushes, defense magic, and other unbuyables. (all prohibitively expensive and in-high-demand types of items.)

jellyneo, the premier neopets website, has recorded prices of some items plummeting from 2,000,000 neopoints to 4,000 neopoints IN THE LAST THREE HOURS. this is when most people haven't even heard about the event or OPENED THEIR BAGS YET.

and of course. cherry on top. 20-year-old account holders are crytyping on the site events neoboard about how mean and cruel it is to make rare stamps part of the prize pool, because their entire identity hinges on being part of the neopian bourgeoisie, and they are having MELTDOWNS over their assets being devalued until they're part of the lowly proletariat.

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."

Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.

These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!

Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!

Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.

So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

i know we all laugh (mostly fondly) about the paper-thin plots in porn that only exist to make the sex happen, but i was reading some old stargate fic over the weekend, and i really think we're sleeping on the paper-thin hurt/comfort plot that only exists to force the characters to FEEL THINGS.

like, is this scenario realistic? no. does it make any rational sense? no. does it provide a built-in excuse for a character to collapse, bloody and disoriented, into the arms of his beloved/friend/partner? obviously, that's the whole point of this exercise.

i love it. it's my favorite thing in the world.
