You're an evil genius. Emphasis on the "evil." Damn straight. Now give me half that burrito before I turn my evil against you.

Out Station, Hosnian System, Core Territories
When you first arrived, the station's constant thrum would keep you awake. The slow, thrusting drawl echoed through your metal cot as the craft perpetually spun, the sound of gears and cogs drilling down to the marrow of your bones to eat at the edges of your mind. Night doesn't exist in space, not in the same way it does on solid ground. There's no physical marker for rest, no sun to rise to mark another day, so everything always trudges forward, with heavy, uneven steps.
 When you were young, the visitors to your planet's surface had told you that space was eerily silent, marked only by the sound of your vessel and your own thoughts.
"Nothing like here," One man -Simmons- had promised. He had tucked himself away into your Sun Dome, waiting for the thunder to calm itself, "Nothin' like this eternal rain."
He had left later that night, leaving only stories about the Inner Rim and an uneasy feeling in your stomach.
"Don't that sound make you wanna go crazy?" he said as he headed towards his ship, "Don't you ever want silence?"
It was funny, how you had never noticed it before, the tap-tap-tap that bore down upon the plexiglass. A frog born into boiling water: you didn't know you were being cooked in it all until someone else told you this wasn't normal.
You've been chasing that silence ever since.
You thought you had found it when you joined the station. Promises of flights to places you've never heard of, adventures you could never dream of: you didn't even bother to pack a bag before jetting off and leaving the rainy planet's surface behind. There, beyond the atmosphere, it was- stretches of ringing, perfect quiet.
Then you arrived and the noises never stopped. It was nothing like the storms you had grown up with, no rhythm, no comfort. Gone was the devil you knew, traded for another nightmare of soot and gears.
Nothing changed. Maybe you did. The hourly chimes, the rattle of cargo leaving and arriving, the sighs and snores and sex sounds of fellow pilots that shared the dorm: you learned to live with it, allowed yourself to become a part of the drum. In fact, a part of you found comfort in it, like a cosmic lullaby, rocking you to sleep as the stars spun around you.
The sudden sharp, violent clanging of metal on metal is not a part of that lullaby.
You jolt from sleep, clutching at your side for where your blaster usually is, driven only by panic. It takes a couple bleary blinks for you to gauge the scene and realize there's no threat. A pink haired rookie is smiling up at you, his cybernetic limb still clutched against the steel of your bed frame.
"Nine!" Pilot 501-G grins, "Scared ya."
"Stars and Makers, Itadori." You soften your tone, but still kick away his hand. Your own prosthetic isn't as advanced as his; while his is covered in thin synthflesh, the metal of yours is exposed, covered only by sheets, "I just fucking fell asleep."
The younger man laughs, backing away from the wall sheepishly. The glimmer in his eye is what keeps him looking young, despite the scars that cut through his lip and over the bridge of his nose. Someone is snoring a couple bunks over, practically gagging on their own spit. Every now and again, the sound stops and Itadori’s head snaps to look in that direction, concern dripping from his features. You’ll tell him later that it’s just G’hil: he’s been snoring like that for years.
"Sorry, sorry - I thought it was funny!" He better be sorry - you're the one in charge of training his ass, "But they're looking for you, so you gotta get up."
You rub the grit of sleep from your eye. "Who could possibly need me? I just fucking landed--" you check your watch- “Four hours ago.”
"One of the guys with the offices," he shrugs, "They told me you'd know where to go."
You do, unfortunately. Only one commander gives instructions to the G Group. With a groan and stiff back, you throw yourself from the bed. As you slide into your fly suit, Itadori dips his head to the floor to avoid watching you dress. In a few months, he'll lose his modesty too; it's hard to stay pure in such a confined space.
Once you're dressed, you both head into the bustling halls. The paths divert and wind, dipping into ladders for the deeper parts of the station. Itadori still gets lost most days, so he follows you as you wind your way towards the loading bay.
"Are you going on a mission?" he asks.The recycled air is extra stuff today and you swear it tastes like the slop dining served last meal.
"It’s an assignment," you correct, "And probably."
"Dammit." Itadori kicks at nothing, practically skipping, "They make me clean engines when you're gone."
"Good, it'll beef you up a little bit."
The boy gawks at that, squeezing his biceps to prove he doesn't need any more. You laugh and mimic him, flexing your own muscles as you walk. He flexes harder then, bicep so coiled you fear he might hurt himself. The ball of muscle is bigger than you expected, easily larger than yours, but you blow him away with a raspberry anyway.
“Okay, okay, Shrimp.”
“Maker, please don’t call me Shrimp-- I’m afraid it’s going to stick!”
He has a point. Nicknames have a funny way of gaining traction around here. As you both wind your way into the main level, the activity picks up. More bodies are roaming the narrow halls, rushing to-- well, you aren’t quite sure. The Station is 45 levels top to bottom with a couple hundred employees on hand at all times, some of which are stationed to pilot hypermatter crafts to places that need it. Other people did a variety of boring, overly scientific sounding jobs- stuff that went immediately over your head when they explained it to you.
“Itadori, we'll fly when I get back, okay? I'll take a cruiser and a couple credits and we'll get a good dinner. Something nice." You bump your hip against him and he almost staggers into an officer. "Something fresh."
"Real Caf?" he asks, "Not the powdered stuff?"
You’re not sure ‘real’ Caf exists, but you promise him anyway.  "Sure, whatever you want."
Itadori pumps his fist in the air with a woop. He goes to continue, then pauses as his eyes flit down the hall. Staggering out of an unknown room is a familiar face, much less bruised than you last saw it.
"Hello, hello," you croon, hands on your knees like you’re calling for a loth-cat, "Look who's out and about!"
"Ha, ha, very funny." Haibara hobbles on a crutch, the wood tucked under his arm's cast. His leg is set straight with chunky plaster, basically paralyzing his right side. The few people who pass clear the way around him, but a round little R2 Droid drives straight into his good leg and almost bowls him over. The round faced brunette wobbles and swears, waving it off with his good arm.
"Do you know how hard it is to not have an arm and a leg?" he exclaims.
You and Itadori share a look, then gesture to each other's cybernetics.
"Yes."
"I know very well," you agree, "I have no sympathy. Don't steal an X-wing next time."
Haibara groans, sounding as pathetic as he looks. He’s actually a couple of years older than you, but he looks softer than Itadori in the face. “I just wanted to try it out. If they didn’t want joy riders, they shouldn’t have refueled here!”
“That’s awful logic,” you tease, clapping his shoulder. Unlike you, Haibara came into the station without any flying experience and has not proven himself to be a fast learner. Why he thought he could borrow an X-wing without the experience ending in disaster is beyond you. “Surprised they didn’t fire your ass. Thank god for unions, huh?”
He shoots you a deadpan look.
"And I was coming here to tell you good news, Niney." Haibara leans on his crutch,  nose in the air, "But now I won’t.”
“Aww, Hai.”
“I won’t! Don’t give me those pouty lips!”
You bat your eyelashes for effect.
“Ugh, be glad I like you,” he says so sweetly, “You-know-who is here."
All humor immediately evaporates from your body. Both men notice and have polar opposite reactions: Haibara glows with a chaotic grin while Itadori sobers.
 "Oh, god," you whisper. A tightness has gripped your ribs. Maybe it's dread, maybe it’s panic. “The you-know-who?”
"I don't know who," Itadori interjects.
“There’s only one you-know-who.”
"Oh, god."
"I don't know who!" Itadori says again.
Haibara throws his head back to laugh, then grimaces in pain. Good, he deserves it.
"Who's you-know-who?" Itadori stresses, looking between his two superiors. You throw a hand over your face to hide your expression, but Haibara continues.
"Niney-Nine, our fearless leader, our beloved pilot-” Haibara’s grin is consuming his whole face. If he wasn’t already stitched and taped up, you might punch him, “--has a crush."
"You have a crush? What?" Eyes snap to you, "On who?"
Crestfallen is written all over the poor kid's face, but you can only focus on your own burning cheeks. Oh, how your body has betrayed you.
"Shut up.”
"She won't even talk to him." Haibara continues, "I try to call her over to talk to him and she shrivels up like a bug."
He brings his good arm to his chest and sticks out his tongue, then roughly mimics scurrying away in the air. Itadori’s jaw is slack, enthralled by his antics.
“It’s nothing,” you insist, “He’s not even cute.”
It’s not nothing. Oh, you wish it was, but it’s not. You have the type of crush that makes your knees buckle and jaw ache and you haven’t even spoken to the man directly. Once, he nodded your way, just the hint of a smile on his lips, and you spent the following afternoon locked in a shower stall, shamefully jacking off to the memory.
Dread rises in your throat like bile.
"Oh, please! You're so smitten! It's crazy!” he turns back to Itadori, “She’s so smitten. Makes this dumb little face-" Haibara makes his eyes wide, “Once, she went to Coruscant to watch his speech-”
"We're leaving." You start walking, pace crisp enough that Itadori can barely follow, let alone your injured copilot, "Bye, Hai!"
"Oh, come on!" The linoleum squeaks under the rubber stopper at the end of his crutch, "I know for a fact that it'd go well if you just talked to him!"
"Goodbye!" you call back. You’re better than this. A stupid crush isn’t going to dominate your life, especially not one this unrealistic.
You click the heels of your boots against the floor with purpose, marching forward and away from that mess.
But Itadori doesn’t have the sense to read the air. “So, who is it-?”
"Itadori," you warn.
Silence only lasts another couple of steps.
"You should ask him out," he continues, "You're really great. I know any guy would be-"
“Don’t,” you warn, a bit harsher than you really should, “Not now, Shrimp.”
As you arrive to where you need to be, a room marked ‘superior’, Itadori chews on his lip and hesitates, shuffling his feet unhappily. He’s still bright eyed and full of adventure, just like you used to be, so he must be upset about missing another ‘mission’.
'Hey," you elbow him again, softer this time, "I'll probably just be toting cargo to the Outer Rim again. There's no reason to be sad or jealous or whatever."
"I'm not jealous of-" Words fail him, then the rookie relents and retreats, "You're right-- have fun on your stinky old rocket."
 He waves you off, still a little down. "Still sounds better than sitting here."
You ruffle his hair. It’s unwashed and sticky enough that it stays in place when you pull away, so you wipe your palm on his shirt. Itadori steps back with fake offense, but his smile is returning.
“Sorry, shrimpy,” you say, “I’ll see you soon.”
You turn the door handle, then pause. “And take a shower, for Maker’s sake.”
.. . . . . . . . .
The office is essentially just an overlook of the bay, with ships and droids constantly twirling about. Today, no large freighters are reloading, so the space is rather barren, filled with only pilots and fuelers passing the time.  At the intercom, a tall, thin woman stands. Commanding Officer Mei Mei tilts her head with the coyest of smiles, like she's barely containing a secret. She greets you by name, a strange familiarity she holds with all pilots she deems worthy.
"Senior Pilot 333-G, reporting for duty," you say.
She wastes no time. Her eyes bore into you from behind the thick plait that covers most of her face.
"You're from a single biome storm planet, right?"
You hesitate to answer. Mei Mei is nice enough, but there's always an insidiousness behind it all, something you can’t quite put your finger on, but your gut can taste. Like the predatory bird, she perches herself against the edge of the table, primed to strike the moment you’re most vulnerable.
"I am, indeed," you admit.
"And you've flown on your planet?"
It's where you learned, in between storms and pressure pockets, on the laps of men that promised to take you away and never did. "Many, many times."
"Good." She claps her hands together and turns back to her makeshift desk. The same papers are scattered around its top, in the same position as always, a charade that works on most. It’d probably work on you too, if you didn’t know how often she disappeared offsite. "It’s settled then. You'll be transporting our visiting senator back to his home planet."
Your heart stops for a moment. Neurons connect.
"Who?" you ask, even though you know better.
The OutStation is a part of multiple trade routes, so it isn't uncommon for senators to make appearances. Most of the time, it's to file complaints about efficiency or lost shipments (with piracy at an all time high, you can't blame them), but a certain senator seems to visit more often than others.
"That would be me.” The man in question stands up from his chair on the other side of the desk and you wonder how you didn't notice him before. Every hair on your body stands on edge as you process his presence, a Loth cat with its hackles raised.
“This time of year, the storms can knock out the Nav and landing systems."  He adjusts his cuff link and smooths the sleeve back into place, always the picture of grace. Senator Nanami Kento, with perfectly coiffed blonde hair and chin never below parallel with the ground, adjusts his glasses and you catch his steely gaze directly. This time, there’s no hint of a smile, just a thin drawn line on his peach slice lips.
Your mouth goes dry.
It's not that you don't like the Senator. Oh. Quite the opposite.
He’s You-Know-Who.
You’re not sure where you gathered the absolute gall to develop feelings for the man. It certainly wasn’t a logical decision. The men you usually go after are in your league: other pilots passing through, engineers that can’t remember your last name, strangers who understand the game and how to play it-- it’s always people who see the Outer Rim Hick written across your face and treat you as such. You have no business falling for a man who dresses in ironed long coats, white collars that are never dirtied, with  a neck that’s never been burnt by the sun.
It doesn’t help that he’s simply attractive. Not a special kind of hot, with caveats and conditions, but genuinely, truly beautiful. It’s the kind of attractiveness that makes people kinder and life easier and you wish you were immune.
"Senator, I-" You're sweating. Your eyes won't leave where you've planted them on the floor. His boots are polished leather, so shiny you can see your warped reflection. It’s better than looking at him. "Wouldn't it be better to use an official transport? Or Haiba-- 299-G?"
Haibara grew up on the same planet as the Senator, so the two have been close since their teenage years. When Haibara left, Nanami went to work, climbing the political ladder. Their home planet used to be a bit more like yours, desolate and unknown, but in the past ten years Prixiyi has transformed into a vacation destination. The change is controversial amongst the citizens, but it undeniably has made the planet a gem in the eyes of the galaxy.
Maybe that’s what made you like him in the first place, that ability to rise.
"There's no official transport in this sector and Haibara is currently… out of commission. I need to go home as quickly as possible and finish some work before the tourism season begins." Senator Nanami leans back, turning away to mutter over his shoulder. "Besides, I'd prefer to make it back in one piece."
Despite yourself, you blossom into a smile. Haibara doesn't have a very good track record of keeping his craft in the sky. It's a bad joke, but coming from him, it's everything.
From the corner of your eye, Mei Mei gives you a sideways glance. That immediately sobers you. Don’t forget yourself: you’re a grunt performing a job, not some schoolgirl with a crush. This isn’t some sort of fanfiction; there’s no reason to get excited.
“I just need someone with experience dealing with the hazards," The Senator reiterates.
"I'll rise to the occasion, sir." You nod to both of the people in the room. Besides, you aren’t some rookie flyboy anymore: you, for better or worse, are considered a proper pilot. As an adult woman, you can swallow down a childhood crush for a couple hours.
Then, maybe, you can go home and masturbate about it.
“Wonderful,” Mei Mei says it in a way where you doubt she really thinks it's wonderful at all. She waits a moment, that crisp smile still pulled tight, "Well?"
There’s the moment, where your guard is down and the soft belly of your emotions is exposed. “Uh-”
“Our darling-” she stresses that word and the man in question seems stiffer, if that’s even possible- “darling Senator said as soon as possible. Start moving.”
You don't wait for any further instruction. In a bit of a scramble, you turn on your heel and leave, careful not to let the door slam. The lack of sleep is still tight in your muscles, but you push through and head towards the bay. There was no instruction of exactly where to go or what you’re flying, but that doesn’t matter.
As long as you know who is onboard, it’ll be a nightmare.

What are you top 3 episodes in each season of The Rookie, aaaaaand your least favourite in each season? (Same rules apply, no 3x13, 5x15 or anything like that...)
y u trynna kill me, ms sarah.
Okay. *cracks knuckles* Let's do this.
We’re going in reverse chronological order. Non-chenfordy episodes (like 515) don’t count.
SEASON 5 - Top 3
1 - 501 - Double Down And, tbh, this is probably my favourite episode OF. ALL. TIME. The disguises. The private jet. Las Vegas. “Do you wanna come in?” THE SHEER RIDICULOSITY. 5/5, no cap.
2 - 518 - Double Trouble If there’s a ‘double’ in the title, there’s a silverskull in the audience. Again. RIDICULOUS. Brilliant. Colourful. Silly. Insightful. I’m of the opinion that the True Crime episodes exist outside of reality, but that doesn’t mean that what they said doesn’t still stand. Lucy has nightmares that Tim will get killed. Tim bottles shit up. Sava is a spicy cinnamon roll. Jake should not have died.
3 - 512 Grrarararrra, how to pick between this and 508 and 510? BUT. I think this episode tops them because we get to see both Couple!Chenford and Work!Chenford, and both are beautiful and brilliant in their own rights. There is nothing to match the perfection of the colouring in 508, but the warmth of the ending of 512 is a close contender. I just. love. basking in it.
SEASON 5 - Bottom 3
1 - 503 I think Eric and Melissa did a lot with the little they had, but I would love to have seen more of the characters’ terror at Lucy being missing. Missing and trapped in a small, locked, space. Missed opportunity.
2 - 514 I don’t dislike this episode, but since Tim is spending all this time at Lucy’s apartment - to the point that Tamara is signing herself an exit ticket - I would love to have seen him interact with the two women a bit more. Or at least pick up on the tension between them.
This is the show’s biggest flaw, IMHO. We would kill just to see these characters sitting around and talking to each other, but they’re always so damn busy. I love 513, but they could have done the entire episode in Nolan’s living room and I wouldn’t have complained. That’s how much I love them. How much we love them.
3 - 511 I’m clutching at straws here, because I adore season 5. BUT! I would have loved Genny to stick her nose into Tim’s business a bit more. I know the episode dealt with serious DV issues in Lucy’s storyline, but since she was there anyway, I think Genny should have done more wondering aloud as to why Lucy was always by Tim’s side. Cough cough. I don’t ship my siblings with their partners, but you can bet your ass I’d be snidely commenting if their “work partner” turned up to randomly coach my son’s baseball team!?!
It turns out, exactly as I suspected, this question is gonna take A LOT of time, so I'm gonna make it a series, thank u, @queseraone.

So you think that we're actually going to get significant quality and or quantity screentime for chenford in 5x05? I know they're in the synopsis and the last time that happened we got 501 but idk I'm very sceptical I feel like it's gonna be something basic like her talking to Ashley for time or something and that's it.
Oh yes, for sure!
I understand why you’re skeptical and that’s completely okay, but I think the key to enjoying a good slowburn like Chenford is to expect good content for the sake of viewing the connection between two characters, not for the progress. And managing expectations, especially when it comes to The Rookie which features an ensemble cast and will have to balance screentime between a lot of people and stories, is so so SO important.
It’s also something I think the fandom kind of sucks at.
I say this with love! I really do! 😂 But I think there are very polarizing reactions from the Chenford fandom. A promo comes out, or a synopsis, or something is teased, and it goes one of two ways: either everyone loses their shit and bouncing off the walls because they think something MASSIVE is going to happen for Chenford, or everyone is completely bitter, reblogging gifs of clowns putting on their masks and ranting about how it’s “another week of bait.” Both of these are valid, and oftentimes are just the result of where they set expectations. It’s just… how people roll. But there is a middle ground!
Because right now, I AM fully expecting this episode to have loads of good Chenford content. Only I’m not totally expecting it to be a big step for them. Right now, they’re both still in relationships and still very adamantly trying to put space between each other for what they almost did. I’m thinking Tim’s injury could be a wake-up call for Lucy (and even for Tim himself) to stop that. I think that’ll maybe kickstart them into being close again, which would definitely be a realistic step forward to hope for, but I’m not expecting anything major and groundbreaking. Not yet, anwyway.
But I’m okay with that. I’m better than okay— I’m excited as hell for 5.05!! Some of the best Chenford scenes we’ve gotten have been scenes where it hasn’t marked a major development for their relationship but is rather reminding us all of why we love them: because of the trust that is there, because of the respect and affection and that truly beautiful connection that they have, that thing that just clicks when they’re together in a way that doesn’t happen with anyone else. Case in point: the dance scene at Nyla’s wedding, the hug scene after Tim visits his dad, the “save me a dance” line at Angela’s (almost) wedding, when she wakes up in the hospital after being buried alive. The list goes on. And what’s even better is that whatever we get in 5.05 will even TOP those kinds of scenes because now they’ve kissed. They’ve kissed TWICE and admitted to almost sleeping with each other, and there’s so much subtext to be captured in their moments that haven’t been captured before. So I think it’s going to be a great episode for them! It’s just all about managing expectations and preparing to be enthusiastic and happy about whatever we’re given.

How are you feeling about 501 being less than a week away?
Well tbh I was feeling great about it until I saw last night that Chris is still around. If he’s still there and he and Lucy haven’t broken up but there are cracks forming or at least some kind of progression with Chenford, even if Chris and Lucy are still dating, I’ll be ok but if they are together and everything is just fine, I’m going to be SO disappointed and honestly don’t know how much longer I’ll watch the show. I know that’s terrible and while I do love the majority of the cast, I watch for Tim and Lucy so no need to continue if there is no Chenford. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Update: the story was from his play but I’m sure he’s around still on the rookie haha we are spiraling over here

Hi, I totally understand your disappointment in how chenford got together. I too thought it was going to take something dramatic for them to finally be together, something like DOD.
Lucy spent 5 seasons not dating cops because of Bishop's advice about her reputation and career. I thought that would play a big part on her hesitation to start a relationship with Tim. But it wasn't even mentioned lol.
And Tim always seemed super aware of the fact that he was Lucy's superior at work, he even listed that as an obstacle in his conversation with Lopez. But then he and Lucy got together and Tim seemed to forget that it's a problem. A "Lucy Lesson" was needed to remind him it's an issue.
But I can't say I'm suprised. The Rookie can set up interesting conflicts and then drop them like hot potatoes. I mean, Ashley says she never wants to have kids and Tim is just "oh well, okay then", and keeps dating her until *she* breaks up with him lol. I mean, what was the point of that?
no LITERALLY bro like…
like bro if i wanted to see a ship get together the way chenford did, i would specialize in fast burns. i get into slow burns bc my ooey gooey hopeless romantic bleeding heart likes to see the moment where it all comes together. now, i will say, i never really wanted chenford to have the near death confession just bc i think it’s been done to death and they’re both in near death experiences like everyday. i personally think it would’ve been interesting to see an arc where they think they’ll lose each other and have to confront what their lives might be like without the other person and they don’t wanna do that yada yada, like jisbon, (yes i’ll be comparing chenford’s get together to jisbon’s for the foreseeable future). what i didn’t think would get them together was like one blurted line that made no sense and riddled the story with plot holes
as for the work thing………… if i think too long about how the work boundary has been handled, my brain might actually explode lol like… the work thing was their BIGGEST boundary and not only did they give 0 shits about it when getting together but they solved it in one episode over what was basically a prank like… i have a pet peeve in slow burns and it’s when i feel like they probably could’ve gotten together forever ago and i really thought all their story was building up to something but if he was just gonna ask her out on a bench outside work in broad daylight and they were gonna solve the work boundary in one episode via prank, i would’ve just wished they did that after her rookie year. that’s another problem with how they got together like fr if it was gonna be that simple why not just get them together between 3x10 and 4x02 when they were both single and there was no work boundary or if there was it would’ve been significantly weaker like… and im saying that as someone who loved s4 😭 i really did love s4 and how 5a was going before 508 and now it all feels so pointless idk
as for the alt s4 love interests……….. oh boi…… okay so. one thing about me. when it comes to fiction… i love me some emotional cheating like it hits every time lol so was it fun to see tim and lucy carry on with 0 respect for their relationships even though i knew they were being terrible people?? hell yeah. but like… when there’s a REASON. i do not understand the purpose of either of those two being in 5a. let’s start with chris. okay so chenford would’ve hooked up in 501 if chris didn’t almost get killed and lucy stayed with him out of guilt? right? that i could understand. but THEN 508 happened and the haunting words of “if we do this” left lucy’s mouth. now…………. if she knew tim wanted to be with her romantically (which is a whole other thing bc bitch how) her staying with chris is absolutely hilarious. her justification for staying with chris was that if she got with tim it might not work out but brother… forgive me if i’m remembering incorrectly, no one was holding a gun to lucy’s head and threatening to shoot if she didn’t get with tim as soon as she broke up with chris. it’s completely out of character TO ME for lucy to stay in a relationship she wasn’t happy in bc she was scared to be with tim. like… lucy is not allergic to being single, i do not GET IT. like if chris died in 501 and lucy was too riddled with guilt to date the guy she was about to cheat on him with, i would ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND THAT but this is outrageous.
now onto ashley……… hooooooooo ashley…. okay like….. it’s hard to verbalize how fucking inane the inclusion of ashley was to me… like just goofy. silly. unserious. if tim didn’t realize his feelings for lucy until 422 or 501, it is, TO ME, COMPLETELY out of character for tim to lead ashley on knowing he’d prefer to be with someone else. that’s why i honestly still didn’t think he realized he wanted to be with lucy even after 501 because like… you’re telling me TIM BRADFORD stayed in a relationship with someone telling him she was in love with him knowing he was severely interested in someone else?? that’s never been tim like omg. did he almost cheat on her a lil? yeah <3 but like idk there was a whole ass time jump and he stayed with ashley that whole time that is CRAZY. i didn’t want either breakup to be off screen but honest to god, if they knew they were about to get chenford together, i would’ve preferred an offscreen breakup during the time jump over an onscreen breakup THREE EPISODES BEFORE getting chenford together like omg OMG
*woosah break*
anyone who’s heard my rants (and it’s been a LOT) know that the episode i have the most beef with is 506. because like… we know tim probably didn’t care that much for ashley (despite the whole ass year relationship and debating retirement to travel with her but i digress) and it’s a common supposition that he was more wounded by the way she dumped him than losing her. sure, whatever, let’s go forward with that assumption. but you know who didn’t know none of that shit? LUCY. from her pov, it wasn’t that long ago that tim said he could see himself marrying ashley and we know lucy took that to heart. and then in 506, lucy finds out tims been moping for a week because they broke up (and specifically ASHLEY dumped HIM) but she’s still confident enough that tim us really into her for the “if we do this” like… and if the uc op brought up real actual romantic feelings between them, i would understand, but it didn’t. it brought up horny. it brought up that tim was sexually attracted to her. which… correct me if i’m wrong… she knew that… long before the uc op… so lucy spending an adrenaline filled weekend with tim with makeouts required and then he’s like “aye im feeling a lil something” does not equal feelings and i personally feel like lucy wouldn’t have made that leap like that when he was like… with someone. idk like… if i could take out any episodes in the 5a sad excuse for an arc, it’d definitely be the episode where lucy witnessed tim moping over his fresh ex for like two days and then blurted out that they like each other two episodes later.
so yeah the timing, the supposed trigger, the other love interests… no matter how you try to spin it, you will never ever get me like “oh no that definitely made sense” bc no matter how you look at it shit was dumb lol

THE IWA'S 2024 DEAL: THE GREATEST OFFER IN IWA HISTORY!
"Are you a former player looking to come back to the IWA, or a new player who is ready to give it a go? There is no better time to play the IWA, because this is the best deal that has ever been offered. The deadline for this deal is February 18th, 2024, so don't delay! This deal is being sponsored by the IWAR Network. Thanks for playing!" -- IWAR Commissioner Matt Riley
www.playiwa.com
PERSONAL FROM ME, TOMMY, WHO RUNS THIS BLOG...
During the mid 90s, I used to play in a play by (snail) mail wrestling game known as the Imaginary Wrestling Association. I was around 10 to 12 years old at the time, and I was not very good at it haha I had no real clue what I was doing!
But, with that said, I remember the days coming home from school, and excitedly waiting for the next paper bulletin to arrive in the mailbox. It was such a cool feeling. Scanning through the pages, reading the trash talk from other players... the visualization was something different. I'd take it with me on the bus and to school.
It was such a hip and cool back in the day that actual wrestlers like Bryan Danielson and Hurricane Helms were even a part of it during their youths. A lot of pen pals were made all around. For me? I would get USWA tapes from one of the friends I made at the time.
Ah those were the good old days before the internet, and sadly that type of joy and feeling can never be replicated in this day and age, but the memories live on right?
After discovering it in 1994, I would say goodbye to the IWA during 1997. It would became a distant memory from that point on.
That was until around December 2018. This sudden flashback hit me. I remembered there was a game that I played as a kid in the mail. But, wait what was it called? Did I imagine it?
Eventually I found out it was real and it was called the IWA. They were still alive after all of these years! Upon finding it, I decided right away to try my hand at it again.
They were still mailing the bulletins, and also now posting the results online. That feeling as a kid sort of returned a tiny bit. But, this time? I was in my 30s, and a bit wiser haha
So began my re-journey into the Imaginary Wrestling Association. I started off as a rookie in the New Wave League, a place all newbie and returning players from past tend to find themselves in.
To be truthful, I wasn't very good when I started, but I understood the concept a bit more then I did as a kid. Like anything in life, you go through growing spurts, and learn through your errors.
Overtime, I caught on on how to play the game. I was foolish in the beginning since I would just picked holds that I felt fit my created wrestlers best. I was not understanding the value of the holds.
It took awhile for me to get that part of the game. I had the wrestlers personalities down, the logos, the trash talk, etc. but man I was a real rookie. Even when I expanded out of the NWL, I was kind of a duck sitting in the water.
Ironically, I won my first IWA Elite by pure luck in a women's league known as the RWL. I was just picking random moves, and just so happened to get it right haha
That first huge win made me want to improve as a player, and with some teaching from one of my friends, Randall Angel, I was finally able to understand the concept behind the holds. Next thing I knew, I was able to hit 498s, 499s, 500s, and 501s. I went on to many things in the IWA Report throughout my time in the game.
I never won the big one, the IWA World title, but that never really mattered to me. The IWA helped me branch out my creativity, and I made some really cool friends.
My time in the IWA ended right before the Summer of 2022. At that point, I was burnt out, and felt I had achieved all I can. Money was also becoming an issue, and I wanted to pursue other things like this blog.
During my final 2 years, I shined brightly as a commissioner. I made up my own brand, 3 leagues from pure scratch that were among the top 10 leagues in the game, and another I took over and made my own thing. It was a lot of fun, I pushed myself to my limits, and did everything I could for my players. It was great, but all good things eventually come to a end.
I am forever thankful for my time in the IWA. From the friends I made such as Brandon Madden, Timothy Clark, Jason Davis, Robert Harper, Rob Lawson, Joseph Cockrell, Catfish Rob, the teachings from Randall Angel, the time I had in the IWAR as a rookie and the things I learned from Matt Riley, to players who helped my leagues work, to the people who decided I was a commissioner of the year, Tommy Zulu for his respect for me, all of the people who did podcasts for me, and the staff of the IWA such as Kim and Johnny B. who let me push my creativity to my limits, and gave me the tools and prizes to make things fun in my leagues. Also the fun events like Royal Caribbean and Irish Pub Showdown! What a blast those were!
Personally, the decision to retire from the IWA was the right call for me as it opened the doors for me to create this blog, have more time for gaming, wrestling, Jdoramas, physical therapy (I have problems with my feet, back, and neck after all the toll from work) and more, but it is a really fun experience to try out. While it might not personally be for me anymore...
If you are a fan of wrestling, like to write, and challenge yourself, you should check it out.
I wrote this post out of respect to the game, the players who put in the work for it, and because it truly is a good time, so please do consider looking into it. I have over 3k followers on this blog, so I hope some will be intrigued.
I know the 80s and 90s are fading away more and more, and the intrigue for this type of stuff might by dying with the newer generations coming, but the IWA deserves to continue it's lasting legacy for a bit more time, so please do consider it!

The Rex/Obi theory
Since apparently we can pin a post, bringing this back from the old blog even though I really ought to do a better write up and just post it as meta on AO3. As always, ship and let ship, we’re all here to have fun, etc.
First off: background sources. Post Blue Shadow Virus, the Naboo gave Rex a set of guns. They are very shiny, very nice, and named Negotiator and Vigilance. Now, given that Obi-Wan has “The Negotiator” as a title, one has to wonder about “Vigilance.” Since Anakin is known as “The Hero With No Fear,” it’s probably not him.
It has also been pointed out to me (thank you, @morecivilizedage) that Obi-Wan’s flagships were the Vigilance and Negotiator. Which…yeah.
Later on, it seems the shuttle that Cody and Rex take in Rookies is named The Obex.
…I am not a fan of the name smushing habit people have for ships, but that’s…kind of blatant.
Also, I recently found out that Sideshow put out an Obi-Wan figure, based on the 2003 Clone Wars design (the modern Clone Wars, and what’s declared current canon, was the 2008 version). To my admittedly limited knowledge, Rex does not exist in the ‘03 show. If nothing else, he’s not listed as a character on the IMDB page. HOWEVER, part of this figure’s design is a wrist com hologram – of Rex. Not Cody. Not another Jedi. REX. WHO DOESN’T EVEN EXIST IN THAT SHOW, WHICH HAS SCREENSHOTS SHOWN ON THE BOX. They didn’t have to call the hologram Rex, and it’s out of continuity to the presented Obi-Wan, and would calling this hologram “Rex” instead of any other clone really sell more figures?
Gotta admit that’s Interesting.
Now, given I totally pick and choose data from non-show sources (…see the horrific novelizations of The Clone Wars – or better yet, please don’t. Character assassination abounds), we need to look at the actual show.
It starts with the movie. Cody has a minimalist presence in there, whereas Rex interacts with Obi-Wan a lot. There’s several scenes where there’s some lovely close interplay, including a bit where Obi-Wan is ordering Rex to pull back – while gripping Rex on the shoulder.
Take a moment. Consider how often you see on the show Obi-Wan touching anyone. He doesn’t tend to initiate that, and it’s rarely outside of a combat situation. But that man can’t seem to keep his hands off Rex. Watch with that in mind, and please, feel free to tell me I’m missing things.
So back to the Blue Shadow Virus. When Anakin is freaking out to Obi-Wan because his wife and student are liable to be the first to die, he wants to know how Obi-Wan can not be on edge. “I’m just better at hiding it.” Take the parallels – Padme and Ahsoka are Anakin’s family. Now, Obi-Wan is prolly also having a HUGE internal freakout because they are in THE hanger that started Duel of the Fates in Episode I, but if he’s hiding the same sort of emotional breakdown, who is that about?
Parallels are important. Take The Deserter. That is THE  shipping episode. Watch how Obi-Wan reacts throughout: he’s grumpy at first, because Grievous is up to the usual shit. Then he coms in to find out what Rex’s status is – and upon hearing Rex has been shot, his immediate reaction is worry, concern – I’d almost say he’s distraught. His orders to Jesse to hustle up and help them take down Grievous is more snarled, harsher, and from that point on Obi-Wan has an edge to him that wasn’t there before. This particular battle has become personal to him, and when Grievous gets away, there is genuine ANGER that a Jedi should not be expressing. What the hells else has Grievous done this   episode or the last to merit that sudden change?
As for the literal parallels, Cut is Rex’s counterpart. They are contrasted again   and again throughout the episode, and that culminates with Rex bidding Cut and his family farewell – so that Rex can go back to HIS family. So. If Rex is Cut, then the kids are obviously the other troopers under Rex’s command, and who does that leave as Suu’s counterpart?
Who is it that Rex talks to immediately? G’on, guess.
Also, Obi-Wan cannot stop gushing to Cody about Rex. I imagine poor Cody has to put up with this a LOT.
In fact, we can show that he does! The episodes with the Zygerrian slavers  – Kidnapped, Slaves of the Republic, and Escape from Kadavo – are just chock full of this. The main crew takes out two BARC speeders. Anakin has Ahsoka riding shotgun in the sidecar, while Obi-Wan has Rex. The intriguing bit is that Cody is left for cleanup and directing the rest of the clones, even though technically Rex is ordinarily in charge of a larger battle group (depending on what bit of canon you’re looking at). There’s that exchange in the slave mines OP mentioned (2 slightly different versions and commentary are linked). There’s also the sequence where Rex gets permission from Obi-Wan to take the shot and be a bad ass on the villain (“I’m no Jedi” indeed). That interplay is subtle, and implies the two work together and closely enough that a glance and a nod are enough to convey what’s  going on. Sure, the 501 and 212 work together often, but Obi-Wan has his own second-in-command.
Interestingly, Cody does not show up after the first episode in this arc. Given that they have the voice actor on hand, and the Wolf Pack is called in at the end for the rescue, tossing Cody and some 212 into the mix would have been easy. So that dynamic has implications.
Not factual enough yet? Screenshots of character positioning being more like a romance moment than in a war flick not good enough?
Let’s go to the Citadel arc. There’s more of the circumstantial evidence, where Rex can be interpreted as having Obi-Wan’s back more than one might think is usual.
But then there’s this gifset. As the mixed 212 and 501 soldiers are thawing from carbonite, watch Obi-Wan in the background. He nopes out of Anakin and Ahsoka’s tiff, and goes over to chat with Rex and Cody. When Obi-Wan gets over there, he raises his arm to do the shoulder grip thing (like I mentioned above, in the movie!). It might not be clear from the gifs, but there is not enough time for Obi-Wan to do that twice before he goes to the one arm behind the back kind of “at ease” posture. When he steps away from the troopers to be the Actual Adult in the room to Anakin and Ahsoka, Rex stands a bit straighter, in proper military posture, and dusts off his armor. It might not be a universal gesture of “aw yeah, I’m awesome,” but it sure seems pretty satisfied. Poor Cody meanwhile is watching the move, which  helps capture the viewer’s eye (and leaves me wondering if he’s going “what the hell is up with you?” or “do not make me hose you down”).
I would honestly love to know someone else’s interpretation of that with un-shipping goggles on. ‘Cause I admit, I don’t see it.
That, folks, is why I ship it like mad. There’s more circumstantial evidence throughout the show, like how Obi-Wan and Rex interact (like a married couple, or in fact often like Anakin and Padme are presented at their best). There’s Rex being extra fancy and staring at Obi-Wan WAY more than Anakin in The Voyage of Temptation, otherwise known as “Satine and Obi-Wan in a Shuttle and Anakin Being Oblivious.” There’s the simple implication of the chemistry between the characters, though that is obviously open to interpretation.
This is animation. It takes time and effort and money to animate a simple shoulder grip, or a specialized gesture such as buffing one’s nails. Voice acting is an art where you have to convey so much emotion with what can be small adjustments to words. Scripts have to go through so much oversight and tweaking to convey a particular story, within the wide scope, and themes and plot threads have to be carefully considered. This isn’t chance, this isn’t one   writer/animator/storyboarder going off into the weeds because they had a Neat Idea.
I really do think it’s canon.
-----------
Random other bits I’ve gathered while re-watching the show:
During the movie, when Rex is told that General Kenobi’s been captured, he just freezes. He goes from digging around off screen for what I suspect is a new ammo cartridge, stills, then yells at the soldier that they have to hold  out, now keep. fighting. It’s less rallying the troops as a bit of emotional pushback.
During Voyage of Temptation, when Anakin is sassing Obi-Wan in the elevator about Satine the possible old flame, Rex is right there in the elevator with both of them (along with poor Cody). Rex isn’t on Anakin’s flank, but Obi-Wan’s (little odd, but I don’t recall offhand how they filed in). And Anakin is “sensing some anxiety” from Obi-Wan about Satine. I love how there’s now another reason for that.
In an…‘interesting’ coincidence, it seems that when Rex got shot in The Deserter, that’s the exact same place Obi-Wan gets shot in Deception. Nothing conclusive there, but it’s intriguing.
from The Zillo Beast Strikes Back – The first time we see Rex, Anakin is giving him orders to “Stay with General Kenobi” – there’s the implication that he’s already with the General.
They’re continuing to leave breadcrumbs in Rebels.

How I Met Your Mother | Captain Rex Ch. 2
Kithrid “Kit” Tolsim is a Jedi Knight assigned to accompany Commander Cody on his inspections tour of the outer rim. Reluctantly and at the order of her Master Pong Krell, she finds herself in the company of two clones who are not sure that Jedi are needed for every occasion. Rex trusts the Jedi, respects several of them, but he’s been around long enough to know that when one randomly shows up, it’s not always a good thing.
Expansion chapter for Episode 5 of season 1: Rookies.
Story One Here  | Story Three Here | Story Four
I stared up at the flickering blue light of the holo before me, hands clasped behind my back.
“Jedi Tolsim,” a familiar and deep voice spoke quickly, voice barbed, tone tight.
I bowed my head. “Master Krell, it’s been some time.”
Krell’s eyes narrowed and I raised my head, staring up at him unflinching. “You have been assigned to accompany the Marshal Commander on his inspections. Ensure that our outposts are ready to face any attacks. We’ve tracked several separatist fleets moving in the area.” A frown found its way onto my face before I could stop it. Krell stared at me. “You have something to add?” he asked. I should have known better. He wasn’t really asking. Somehow that didn’t stop the words leaving my mouth.
“Surely, the Commander is capable of assessing his men’s readiness on his own?”
“I see your time on your own has left you more… idealistic that the last time we saw one another,” Krell murmured.
I swallowed a gulp of air and shook my head. Stupid. You know how he feels about clones.
“I only meant---”
“You will accompany the commander and ensure that his report contains an accurate assessment of our troops and outposts. Is that clear?” he ended with a growl and I immediately bowed, bitter thoughts pricking through my mind.
Make sure the clone doesn’t lie to make himself look better. You’re loud and clear.
“Yes, Master.” As I brought my head back up, I found that the transmission had ended. I let out a sigh. “Damn.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Commander Cody, please report to the flight deck. Commander Cody, please report to the flight deck.”
I paced from one end of the shuttle’s ramp to the other, silently scanning the hanger for any sign of this Commander Cody. Something twisted in my gut. Fear? Anxiety? I took a deep breath and closed my eyes as I came to the end of the ramp once more. Krell’s orders echoed in my mind and guilt welled up in me. As a padawan, his view of the galaxy had been all I knew. But now, on my own for a year, I knew this was his bias and distrust of clones, more than a true need to ensure the clones were really ready for an attack.
Patience. Breathe. Be calm.
“Ahem.”
With a small gasp, I opened my eyes to find two clones staring at me, hands up in salute. Clearing my throat, I returned the gesture and shifted from one foot to another.
“General Tolsim,” a clone in yellow and white saluted me, “I’m Commander Cody.” I glanced at the identical man next to him, at least identical so much as they had the same eyes, the same face… but not. It wasn’t the scar on the commander’s face or the yellow blonde hair on the man next to him --- there was a difference in how they stood, the man in blue tense, on edge. Cody glanced at his companion. “This is Captain Rex of the 501st. He’s my second for these inspections.”
I smiled and clasped my hands behind my back. “Then I’ll round out the party as your third. Shall we?” I jutted my chin to the shuttle behind me. I turned on my heel, but not before Captain Rex raised an eyebrow, glancing at his superior as if asking a silent question.
“Is something wrong, Captain?”
“Inspection crews aren’t usually accompanied… by Jedi, Ma’am.”
“I’m a last-minute addition, I’m afraid. I’ll do my best to stay out of your way.”
~~~~~~~~
I was quiet. Commander Cody and Captain Rex were quiet. The whole ship was quiet. Everything was awkward. With a wince I glanced at the men sitting ahead of me, piloting the ship stoically as if they were afraid to say anything in my presence. At least they had kept their helmets off, so I knew they were quietly talking over private comms. Still, I couldn’t help the itch to speak, to fill the silence with… something.
Crossing my arms, I glanced out the window the glow of hyperspace filling the view. My eyes drifted to the weapons and helmets stowed in the locker beside me. I glanced over it all, not really looking. A bad habit of mine: when there’s nothing else to do, act like you’ve found something to do.
“Huh.” Raising an eyebrow, I looked over the blue and white helmet. “Jaig eyes?” Out of the corner of my eye, I glimpsed the clones giving each other a glance before turning to me.
“You know about Jaigs, General?” one of them asked. I straightened up. When I turned to face them, Cody was focused back on flying. Rex seemed stuck in the middle, curious to hear me answer the question, but trying to seem disinterested at the same time.
I stepped up behind them. “A clone on one of my first missions had them. Said they were awards for courage.”
My senses picked up feelings of pride as Rex turned in his seat and stared out the window. Cody glanced back at me. “Rex was one of the first clones to get them. It’s quite the story actually---”
“Commander,” Rex glanced over at Cody.
I bit my lip. “I’d love to hear it… sometime,” I said.
Rex turned to me. “Sometime,” he replied then shook his head. “We’re coming up on Pastil station.”
Stepping back, I found a seat and listened as they began relaying commands to the outpost in preparation of our arrival. I glanced at the blue eyes on the helmet and swallowed a sigh.
This is going to be a long mission.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pastil was ready for our arrival, the commander and captain taking the lead of our tour. There was an edge to the air as we went about their business, eyes trailing after me and I had to bite back a sigh.
Jedi don’t accompany random inspections. If I’m here they must think something is wrong, I thought to myself. I glanced over my shoulder catching the eye of the deck sergeant before he turned away jittery as a monkey-lizard. I shook my head. Blast it, Master Krell.
“Everything alright, General?” Commander Cody asked, my attention pulled from my thoughts to the two men in front of me. Feelings of worry and anxiety rippled off him, despite the stoic look on his face --- but I sensed no dishonesty. He wasn’t trying to hide anything. Rex kept his head turned to the front, but his shoulders were tense.
I put on my best smile. “Of course,” I said as we turned down a hallway. Out of view of the station’s troops I lowered my voice. “I seem to have made everyone on edge.”
Rex and Cody glanced at one another. “Inspections…” Cody trailed off.
“Inspections put everyone on edge,” Rex finished for him. “It’s not just you.”
I frowned. “Well, I’m glad it’s not just me.”
Rex shook his head quickly, and said, “I---”
Cody cut him off. “What Rex means to say is that inspections, for all the purpose of assessing combat readiness and the state of the station’s crew, are also opportunities for the men to let the higher ups know of issues --- things that need fixing.”
I nodded. “And with me here, it may appear all is well, even if all is not well.” I glanced at Rex. “It seems I have made your jobs harder. I apologize.” Our party came to a stop in front of the lift as Cody punched the call button. I crossed my arms and looked down the hall behind us, no sign of anyone. “You know, I think I left my saber on the ship.”
Rex glanced down at my belt and I felt the familiar weight of my lightsaber swaying on its clip. “Ma’am…”
“I’ll run and get that now,” I murmured as I stepped back from the pair of officers. I shook my head, a knowing smile on my lips. “I have no idea where I put it. Could be anywhere. Continue your tour without me,” I said as I turned on my heel, leaving the pair behind. The sound of the lift opening and closing echoed behind me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was hours later, when the pair of clones finally arrived back at the ship. I turned around in my seat as they made their way to the flight chairs, setting their helmets aside. Cody glanced at me before taking the first chair.
“Find your weapon, Ma’am?” Rex asked as he passed me by and I would swear he was almost smiling. Almost. I unclipped my saber, and flipped it into the air before catching it again.
“Would you believe it was under the chair this whole time, Captain?” I smirked. Rex chuckled as the ship took off from the hanger. I watched as he took his seat, then turned my attention to the Commander. “How went the rest of your tour?”
Cody glanced over his shoulder. “It went well, General. The sergeant in charge pointed out some deficiencies in the outer defenses. Rex pointed out how to fix them. They’ve also got several requisitions on back order, so we’ll see if we can get them some fresh supplies to help with morale.” I smiled as I studied Cody in the force. No deception, nothing hidden.
“I’m glad you were able to help them,” I said. Crossing my legs, I glanced out the front window, black space and a smattering of stars filled my eyes. “The Rishi station is up next, yes?”
“Yes, Ma’am,” both men replied as we jumped to hyperspace.
“I was thinking…” I trailed off as they both glanced back at me. “I do need to inspect some things for my own report. But would it be better if you two did your inspections first, then I could bring up the rear?”
“That could work,” Rex said, thoughtfully. “If you don’t mind staying on the ship a bit longer?”
Cody nodded. “This outpost has quite a few rookies too so there should be plenty of things that aren’t up to snuff. No reason to stress them out more.”
“Sounds like a plan,” I said as I clasped my hands in my lap. “How far away are we?”
“Half an hour,” Cody said, turning to Rex, “dial it in for me?”
Rex gave a quick nod and began typing away. “Yes, sir.”
“Rishi Outpost, this is Commander Cody, do you copy?” Static filled the comm channel. Cody sighed. “I repeat: Rishi Outpost, this is Commander Cody, do you copy?” Still nothing.
“Are our comms jammed?” I asked, standing up and moving up behind Rex’s chair to peer at the screen. Rex shook his head.
“Everything’s clear on our end, they just aren’t responding.”
“Let’s try this again,” Cody ground out. “Rishi Outpost, this is Commander Cody, do you copy? Rishi Outpost come in. Rishi Out post do you copy?”
A flash of annoyance rang through the force before the screen finally flittered and a clone trooper came into view. “Sorry Commander, we’re uh experiencing technical difficulties.” I raised an eyebrow as Rex and Cody shared a look.
“This is the inspection team,” Cody said gruffly.
“Inspection, negative, negative. We do not require an inspection.”
“Well, that’s a first,” I murmured stifling a laugh.
“Everything is fine here, thank you.”
Cody glared at the screen. “We’ll be the judge of that,” he said. “Prepare for our arrival.”
“Roger, roger,” the trooper confirmed before the screen went blank. I cocked my head. Odd.
“Something’s not right here,” I said. Rex looked at me over his shoulder as I stepped back and took my seat.
“I was just about to say the same thing, General.”
“Well, good luck,” Cody chuckled. “I’m putting you two in charge of this one.” He glanced back at me. “I think maybe you should accompany us for this inspection, Ma’am.”
I shrugged. “Whatever you say, Commander.”
The landing pad was deathly quiet. I walked down the ramp on my own, Cody and Rex bringing up the rear, muttering quietly about the state of the outpost.
“Sloppy—” Rex said before cutting himself off. I took a deep breath and focused on the base.
“I have a bad feeling about this,” I said as the base doors opened and a single trooper made his way towards us. Cody moved past me, Rex following behind him. My hand fell to my belt, fingers wrapping around the hilt of my lightsaber. I focused on the trooper walking towards us, waving his hands as he spoke to Cody. Something felt wrong here. I felt nothing. No energy no feelings. All clones had a different aura about them. Rex was like a stone wall, tough but with cracks of light bleeding through it. Cody’s was just as tough, but more fluid, like ice melting in spring. The trooper meeting us felt like nothing.
“Captain…” I said, an edge of worry to my voice. Rex twisted around to look at me, just as a red light exploded in the sky. I looked up and spotted the droid attack flare. I pulled out my saber, purple light igniting as I brandished it, but I was too slow to beat the shot of blaster fire that went straight through the trooper’s head.
Cody yelled as I ran to catch up with them. “General--- Rex what the heck are you---”
“That’s no clone,” I said as I skidded to a stop beside them. Rex knelt down.
“Relax, Cody,” he said as he pulled the helmet off the body, the head of a droid coming into view.
“That flare must have come from the survivors,” Cody murmured. Leaping forward, I brought my saber up as red bolts flew towards us.
“Find cover!” I shouted as I deflected one bolt after the other. Rex and Cody dashed to the side, finding cover behind some crates. Shots blasted from behind me. I turned. Droids were on all sides. Detonators were in their hands.
“General, off the platform, now!”
Not needing to be told twice, I dashed to the left, leaping into the air as fire exploded behind me. My body curled in on itself as I fell, hands thrown back as I threw out my mag line. With an oomph I caught myself hanging below the platform, Rex and Cody hanging above me. We looked at each other as flames and sparks and ash rained down from above. Without a word, Cody set his line to lower him. Rex and I did the same.
I disconnected my line as my feet touched the ground and let out a deep breath, peering up at the chaos above us. “Any ideas?” I asked the two clones next to me.
Rex shook his head a wave of anxiety flowing off him. I stepped from one foot to the other, adrenaline making me antsy. “Droids complicate things, General,” Rex said.
“Eh, it’s no worse than that time on Tibrin,” Cody said stepping past us. Out of the three of us, he felt almost normal. He glanced at me. “Glad we brought you with us, General.”
“Glad I didn’t stay on the shuttle,” I said, following after him. I glanced back at Rex as he brought up the rear.
“Glad you remembered your lightsaber this time,” Rex said, the edge and alertness to his voice still there but he felt calmer, and it was if he was trying to help me calm down too.
I turned and followed Cody down the ridge. “Me too. You’ve probably already thought of this, but I’d say our first step is finding whoever shot off that flare. Regroup then try to signal the fleet.”
“If the survivors didn’t signal them already then we’ll have to take the base to find working comms,” Cody pointed out.
I nodded my head. “Taking back a base from new commando droids. Today’s turning out to be so much more fun than just inspecting outposts.”
Rex huffed out a sharp laugh from behind me. “We aim to please, Ma’am.”
~~~~~~
The survivors weren’t exactly the troopers we were hoping for. The minute we’d laid eyes on them Rex went into senior captain mode, resetting the chain of command. The shinies, Fives, Hevy, and Echo immediately fell into line. When it came to the planning though, everyone turned to me.
“Orders, General?” Cody asked.
I shook my head. As a padawan I had seen orders given and had relayed them, but hated doing it. It was too much pressure, too much to put on one person, even a jedi. And in my experience the best plans were a mix of clone ingenuity and Force inspired chaos. Not that any other jedi would call it chaos.
I looked to the shinies. “What’s the quickest way into the base?”
“The front door,” Hevy said, quickly before the others could answer.
“Any other way?”
“We could go back the way we came, through the vents but they’ll hear us before we get to the command center.”
Cody shook his head. “They’re not going to let us through the front door.”
I glanced at Rex as he stood off to the side, staring up at the landing platform. “Captain? Your turn.”
“I have a few ideas,” he said, slowly turning back to face the group. “And they’re just crazy enough they might work.”
~~~~
“This is never going to work,” I muttered as Rex stared into the door camera, trying to convince the droids within the base to let us in. It took everything in me not to laugh as he bent down and picked up a droid’s head and waved it at the camera, like a child with a mangled puppet. The gears within the base began to turn as the doors slid open and I came face to face with a group of droids. If droids could look surprised, they looked double that when Rex stepped up and stood next to me.
“Jedi!?”
Fssssh. With the hum of my saber, I glanced at Rex.
“Roger, roger,” he said and I could hear the grin. Throwing up a hand I pulled the nearest droid towards us, swiping it down the middle with my blade. Blasters fired. Droids fell to the ground, gaping holes in some, pieces missing from others. It was over in seconds.
“Let’s move,” I called to the group behind me, before taking off down the hall. Rex kept pace. “I think that was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” I laughed quietly as we rounded a corner.
Rex said nothing, but I could feel a hint of his pride, as we slid to a halt at the bottom of some stairs.
“Permission to take point, Sir?” one of the shinies asked.
Rex shook his head. “I’m always first, Kid.”
“I think we can both be first this time,” I told him, and he snapped his head in my direction. “Captain, you’ll take the left, I’ll take the right. Everyone else aim for the center,” I whispered. “And go!”
The command center exploded into action as we burst through the entrance. I spied two droids on the top walkway, taking aim as we rushed the room. With a quick gulp of air, I pushed myself off the ground and soared through the air, flipping over before landing between them. A solid swipe of my sword saw them both dismantled and on the floor. Down below the shinies and Cody were clearing the other blast droids out. But Rex was on the floor, a bladed droid standing above him. Reaching out, I wound my hand into a fist and pulled the droid up off the ground. Rex jumped to his feet. With more strength than I think any natural human could possess, he twisted the droids head nearly off and smashed it to the ground as I dropped my hand.
“Room’s clear,” the batch of shinies announced as we regathered in the center of the control room.
“Cody, check the comm’s system,” I said as I clipped my lightsaber to my belt. “See if you can reach Master Kenobi or Skywalker.”
Cody worked at the control system, Fives moved next to him. “We’ve got incoming,” Fives said. I glanced at his screen, a fleet of separatist ships moving into view.
“That’s not good,” I said, shooting a glare at the screen. “Any breaking away towards us, or are they just flying by?”
“Two are entering the atmosphere,” Fives said as the room fell silent.
Rex leaned over the console. “Commander?” he asked, urging Cody to finish working on the comms.
“The relay’s been sabotaged. And we’re broadcasting the all-clear signal to the fleet.” He glanced round the room. “They won’t know the separatists are in the sector until it’s too late.”
“Then we have to stop the signal. Can you turn it off?”
“It’s hardwired.”
“Then we’ll have to blow the base,” Rex said quickly.
“I think we forgot to bring the missiles for that,” I murmured. “A few detonators won’t cut it.”
Everyone fell quiet at that, trying to think their way out of this. An alarm rang, a proximity alert. Fives began swiping at his screen.
“Seppies are two minutes out.”
Stretching my arms above me I cracked my neck and turned towards the door, before heading for it.
“General?” several voices called behind me. I turned around.
“Figure out how to blow the base,” I told them, pointing my thumb over my shoulder. “I’m going to stall our guests and give you all time to clean the house up.” Turning on my heel, I started down the stairs. “Try to be quick about it,” I called over my shoulder. The sound of boots running echoed behind me.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The base --- if one could call a burning pile of metal a base--- was gone. We’d had no word from the fleet. But the droid ships had taken off the second the base was destroyed. And so we found ourselves on the high ridge, watching the station burn. The shinies were quiet, doing their best to hide their grief over their fallen brother Hevy. If Cody or Rex noticed how much they were hurting, they didn’t show it and I wondered if it might have been a different story if I hadn’t been there. I did my best to give the group space to work through their feelings, thinking that if it weren’t for me, they’d let their pain be free rather than bottled up, waiting to burst out.
Speaking of pain. With a hiss, I finally lowered myself to the ground, unable to stand any longer, turning my back to the group. I leaned back on one hand and looked down at my side, the burning sensation fire spreading beneath my skin.
“You alright, Ma’am?” a clone’s voice said above me, softly. A glance over my shoulder found Rex standing behind me, looking down, the moon shining behind him. I would have jumped if my body had had the energy. I hadn’t heard him at all.
“’m fine,” I told him as I turned back around. He stepped around and knelt beside me.
“You don’t sound fine,” he said, setting his helmet of the ground next to us. He looked over my torso. “You’re hurt.”
“I really wasn’t planning on getting shot today,” I groaned as Rex checked my side. Without asking permission, he lifted my shirt and looked over my skin, and the way he lifted my arm sent a wave of agony through my ribs.
“The wound isn’t deep, but your ribs are most likely broken,” he murmured.
That’s what happens when a battle droid throws you into a wall.
“I am aware,” I breathed as he lowered my arm. “Think I’ll make it?” I asked, smiling up at him softly, already knowing the answer.
“Yes,” he said, matter of factly. I raised an eyebrow and he stammered. “B-but I’m not a medic ma’am so---”
“Rex, I’m just messing with you. Relax.” Taking my words as if they were an order, Rex lowered himself completely to the ground and sat next to me, one knee pulled to his chest. “Any word from the fleet?” I asked.
He shook his head. “Not yet,” he said. “But with how the droid fleet retreated, I’d say General Skywalker and General Kenobi are on their way.”
“Good,” I breathed as I leaned my head back to stare up at the stars. “I’m sorry about Hevy,” I murmured.
Rex’s voice softened. “Ma’am?”
I let my head fall forward until I could look at him once more. “I’m sorry about Hevy,” I repeated. “If I’d known he was still inside I never would have left him.”
“Respectfully, General, if you’d both been in there, you both would be gone right now.”
“That doesn’t make me feel any better, Rex.”
He shook his head. “I know. But hopefully it lets you know that no man here blames you. Losing a brother is something we’re born to endure.”
I looked out over the horizon as a flutter of wind and sand rolled by and silence fell over the ridge.
