every monthly calendar setup I’ve tried in my bullet journal !
I’ve decided I want to make some posts focusing on how I started in my bullet journal and how I got to where I am now, and the essential monthly calendar seems like a good starting point! Keep reading to see 10 different months out of my journals and how my layout developed to what I use now :)
Tumblr media
May 2020, the first full month I bujoed and the first ever calendar I made. I didn’t get much use out of it because nothing happened in 2020. I don’t like how this spread looks really and I abandoned this layout after June 2020, but I have been considering going back to a full page calendar grid like this.
Tumblr media
In July and August 2020, I tried out this wheel type spread. I like how this page turned out and the calendar worked just fine, but it’s not really my thing anymore.
Tumblr media
In September 2020 I kept the wheel but made it two pages. I didn’t like this page because there was too much blank space and it felt very plain and wasteful. Also, you can tell this journal got some use by the split in the middle lol.
Tumblr media
October 2020 is when I struck gold because this is basically the monthly spread I used for the entire next year. Even now my monthly calendar came from this idea. You can see I put birthdays on the calendar and everything else in the appropriate dated box on the right. Later this evolved to not have anything on the mini calendar.
Tumblr media
February 2021 I clearly did not want to spend time setting up my calendar and I came up with this condensed but still practical version. In March, I went back to my original 2 page spread like October’s.
Tumblr media
However March was the end of 2-page monthly spreads because my April and May 2021 calendars looked like this. I condensed the date boxes to fit into 3 columns below the mini calendar.
Tumblr media
In June and July, I did the same basic layout but with both months on one page. Since I don’t have school in those months, I combined them into 2-month spreads for the calendars and habit trackers.
Tumblr media
Last September is when I came up with the ideal right side page for this school year. There is a lot of blank space, but it’s there if I need it to plan. Also, I made a space for future events (this is when I realized I needed a future log).
Tumblr media
Once again in October I found a favorite layout. It’s basically the same thing as before but with boxes for weeks instead of days. It’s much less cluttered and easier to read when I’m transferring things from my calendar to my weekly spreads.
Tumblr media
For December and this month, I did a 1x1 instead of 2x2 calendar and gave myself a little more space in the week boxes, but that’s the only change. Now that I’m in my new journal I have a future log, so I got rid of the “future events” section for now.
And that’s all the progress my monthlies have made! It’s cool to look back on things like this and see all the ways I’ve experimented. I will be making a series of posts like this, and I’ll eventually have a masterpost coming as well! Thanks for reading :)

Hey I think I remember you saying you were starting a bullet journal and I was wondering how you are finding it and if it's been helpful at all? Could you tell me how you use it and what your tracking and your layouts? I want to start one but I don't want to mess up the journal and get it wrong. Thanks
I’ve just finished setting up June’s pages, so here they are! I was in half a mind to do a video about this, but just recorded this on my phone instead. If you’d like me to do a vid on it, maybe I will!! Lemme know.
Anyway, for your actual question, I am very new to bullet journalling, and I haven’t yet found a format that really works for me. The whole point of it is to function as a productivity tool, and as a way to declutter what’s going on in your mind and make it more manageable. It can look pretty, but that’s not its primary function.
Ryder Carroll, the method’s creator, calls it a “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system”. I was aware of that when I began to do my research, watching videos of other - mostly minimalist - journallers to see what they used and what might be useful for me.
Among those was:
the monthly calendar view
gratitude log
weekly view
habit tracker
sleep hours log
sleep quality and mood graph
specific exercises log
body measurements log
garden notes
plus, I intend to add a quotations page, and further back in the book I already have a reading list.
As to the issue of ‘new journal fear’ I don’t think you’re alone. In fact, the book I’m currently using is the back of an old sketchbook. I decided that when I hit a particular goal from my personal list, I would start a bullet journal proper as a reward, and until then, I would play around with formats until I was happy with what was working. This takes the pressure off ‘ruining’ a journal, and allows me to find a journalling rhythm that’s comfortable and above all practical. If the whole thing is a waste of time, or if you’re using it to punish yourself for setting unattainable goals, then it’s counterintuitive and counterproductive.
Maybe that’ll help you when thinking about beginning your journal? Watch YouTubers (don’t start on Pinterest) talking about their journals and why the various processes work for them, make notes as you go along, and then arrange them into order before you start (see picture below). That’s what I did anyway, and I’m trialling this layout/format/process before I begin my ‘serious’ bujo as a reward for when I hit my goal.
Tumblr media
One thing I will say is that while the ‘mood tracker’ pages can look very pretty, I did one in April and it didn’t provide me with any useful info really other than the general impression of my mood. Pairing it with a sleep graph has helped me map my mood and my sleep quality together, saving space, and providing me with more useful information.
Here’s April’s ‘tea themed mood tracker’ and the fancy water log, both of which have now been switched for something more streamlined, even though they’re pretty, they’re not functional.
Tumblr media
Good luck!! And remember it’s all personal and all about your goals and your productivity. What works for one person may not work for another, and you don’t have to bind yourself to the aesthetics of Pinterest and Instagram to produce a system that functions for you.
YouTubers I found particularly helpful were Elsa Rhae and Pick Up Limes.

the december community challenge / day 1
Do you like winter?
YES!! I live in a state where it’s winter from October to April, so if I didn’t like it I’d have probably lost my mind already. The worst part however is the seasonal depression that comes alongside it, however! But winter also has Christmas and my birthday going for it so yes although it sucks sometimes I do like winter overall

BUJO: Rise of the Bullet Journal (Short Documentary) I started my bullet journal in April 2018. My life was so disorganized. I can't plan well for my job & deadlines so I often forgot to eat or sleep. I could stay awake for over 30hours straight at once (record at 38hours) and had GERD at least once a week. It was torture. I tried using planners a couple of times but it didn't work for me. I hate the restrictions that come with a constructed & printed planner book. Then I stumbled across AmandaRachLee's bullet journal video on Youtube (you know, one of those recommendations that appear for no reason) & then followed by Ryder Caroll's video & they changed my life. I started simple & it was ugly but functional. Especially the habit trackers. They look like challenges to me & I rarely backing down from challenges so slowly but surely, I began to eat & sleep regularly. Not at normal hours, not even now because of time zone differences with clients etc. But I get the needed sleep quota & that's enough for me. I stopped having GERD in a month and never had it again ever since. And nowadays I don't even need to look at my bujo to remind me to eat. The future & monthly logs help me to look at my deadline schedules with a bigger picture like point of view and together with the weekly log, they help me to pace myself with my tasks for my deadlines so I can have a break and actually have time to sleep. I also can be pretty forgetful so they also help to remind me of other things I need to do or check out, like paying the bills etc. Which also incidentally help me to manage my finance better. No more impulsive shopping & snacking (especially snacking) when I see that it's almost due for utility bills etc. In 2019, I became more artsy with my bujo. I had never been into stationery before unless it's for art supplies but now I'm kinda addicted to it & found myself a new hobby with handlettering. Bujo becomes an outlet for me to break away from my gadget filled life. I work as a digital artist/illustrator & it can get pretty exhausting sometimes. Doing an analog planning for my life actually gives me a different kind of break & let me express myself with a different art style. 2019 felt like I went back to my origins with using pencils and pens for art. 2020 is more of scrapbooking style with doodles here and there & I've never been so wrong my entire life when I thought it was going to be a great year. For the last couple of years, the bujo communities have evolved crazily. Things became more and more elaborate and people started to forget the main function of the bujo system. It gets exhausting and expensive for no reason. Dramas and fights broke out between bujo planners about what the bujo system is supposed to be like and etc. Things just go bananas all of a sudden. It was because of this that I realized I've also been swept along by the artsy trend and setting up the monthly setup feels exhausting sometimes. So, I'm going back to the minimalistic layout. I'd probably still include some art inside because I can't help it, I'm an artist. But it would be more minimalist and not as art demanding as it had been for me like last year and this year. For 2021, I'm planning for a minimalist vintage scrapbook style. And so does many other people, it seems. LOL~ All in all, I'm so glad & grateful I found out about the bullet journal system.

APRIL 2017 BUJO LAYOUT // 2 APRIL 2017
so before i forget to post this again, i shall hurry type this out before i start on my cell division homework. this is my april layout and i’m pretty proud of it but this month is very much an experimenting month for me since i added in all the habits tracker, month in a glance and read and watch parts. mainly everything in these pictures ahahah
theme for april 2017: green and florals basically nature
there’s a reason to why i’ve added all these in and its becos i really want to start having these good habits and also, monitor my monthly spendings on useless stuff and make sure that i’m accountable for everything i do and spend.
also, i realised that weekly spreads didnt really help me much, so i’ve tried to do a week worth of daily spreads and that sorta helped me but i found it wayyy too time-consuming and repetitive for my liking. also, i didnt have that much time to spend everyday just to finish the layouts and plan out my days.
i’ve then came to the conclusion that i would be doing 2-3 days worth on each page to not have so much empty space in each page. the time blocking schedule would still be in my bujo but in a different format instead of me having to draw a table every single day, its a little too time consuming and takes up a lot of space in my bujo.
thats abt it for my bujo today, hopefully next month would be a ton prettier and that i’ll find my preferred style in doing my spreads.
PS, another post would be out tonight when i’m done with my studying and hw! aka day 7 of productivity and day 2 of april study challenge!
xo,
Pre [@konstantly-studying]

i’ve always wanted to make more content than just pictures, so i’m going to post about how i set up my bullet journal! (disclaimer: there are many ways to set up a bujo, but i hope that you can find some inspiration from this post)
because i use my bullet journal as both a planner and a journal, i basically have it with me EVERY SINGLE SECOND of the day. so basically if i were to lose it i will most likely have a mental breakdown hahah... anyway, here’s just a breakdown of what pages i like to add in preparation for a new month!
inspirational quote / typography to start off each month, i find a quote that may appear deep and inspirational, but to be honest, i probably found it in a bts song translation. usually, i opt for one color theme, and then i attempt multiple styles for the words on a separate piece of paper before finalizing the typography in my bujo. sometimes i mess up, sometimes i don’t. really depends on the month, and that is honestly okay; this bujo is meant for mistakes.
title page of the month  obviously. you can’t have a new month without a new title (it’s a new start!!!). below the name of the month, i write out the days of the month starting on a sunday. it’s pretty basic but i like it. add some stickers and... voila! you got a brand new beginning.
tracker this tracker has stuck with me for as long as i’ve used a bullet journal, so i gotta say, it’s been consistent. i track some of the daily tasks i need to do, plus my sleep schedule. i’ll straight up list everything on my tracker. so - eat healthy, save money, workout, read, play instrument, write my research paper, retainers, AP prep, shower, pooping (yes ik), period, post on studyblr/gram.
moodboard looking back on all of my moodboards for the past few months, i’ve noticed a pattern. there is always a photo of at least one of the bts members. whelp. i usually go for the light / pastel colors. basically, i print a bunch of aesthetic photos at one go, and store them at the back of my notebook, until the time comes to create another moodboard. i can usually find photos on tumblr that are very aesthetic and minimalist. twitter is a great source of fantaken kpop pictures and these moodboards can also include photos you take yourself! the colors that seem to call to me each time are selected for that specific month. it’s very calming.
goals + favorites  i like to set up my goals and favorites with different icons each month. for example, in april, they were bar graphs. previously, each slot for a goal / fave has been in the shape of waves, blocks, polaroids, coffee cups, and leaves. i usually leave three or four spots for each category. i fill out the goals at the beginning and the favorites as the days go by.
a sentence a day  i like to record one line of thought for each day. it’s nice looking back on the days, noticing how i felt across the entire month. these sentences are fairly simple, but they are my best bet at summarizing a day.
eats i track the three meals of my day, plus a snack. because i’m at boarding school, there really aren’t that many choices, but i do think that it’s a nice concept. keeping records of what i eat really keeps me accountable and eating healthy. although it is tedious, this routine motivates me to be more conscious of my body.
expenses as someone who is essentially SHIT at controlling the amount i spend, i’ve been trying out this page to keep myself accountable. i wish i had more self control and noticed more about what i spend my money on. it’s a problem. i hope to fix it with the help of this expenses tracker. for each item, i have a date, name, and cost. at the end of each month, i calculate the total, and set a goal for the max i can spend the next month.
thoughts this is essentially where the journaling part of my bullet journal comes in. i leave the page blank, except for a header. whenever i feel a strong burst of emotion, i flip to this page. i have one at the beginning of my monthly spread and one more at the end, in case i run out of space.
weekly layouts for each week, i based my spread on the muji layout. because a week in the life can get extremely busy with all the assignments and extracurriculars, i found that a very open spread has helped me structure out my week. with everything that’s going on, this layout stands as a good organizational tool for a busy student. there are pictures of my weekly spreads under my posts!
polaroids at the end of each month, i print out four polaroids that highlight the good memories that have passed. this is a recent idea, so i have actually not tried it out yet. i hope it works out though!
whew. now that’s all out, i hope this post helped out anyone who was nervous about starting a bullet journal. to be honest, finding the right set up and pages took a very long time, so don’t feel pressured or anxious about finding the perfect routine straight away. i know i sure as hell did not. i’m currently on my second bullet journal, and i believe there is room for plenty of improvement ahead!
i guess what i’m trying to say is good luck to all of those that have read this far and are giving bullet journaling a go. my inbox is always open so feel free to send a message!

A bit late posting this. Anyway, It’s here again my Bullet Journal set-up for the month of April. My Theme for this month will be caffeine… coffee. I’m addicted to coffee. Coffee in a day is like thunder and storm mode. I can’t concentrate on what will I do and which one will be the priority for the day.  Anyhow, Enjoy my post for those who are an addict to caffeine… coffee.
This is all the materials I used to do my theme.
youtube
My video, too much lights because the sun is up when filming my video usually I use room light only.
This theme is just easy, with the help of the stickers. They so lovely and the pens & markers pop up the designs.
My first week of April (Week 14) Boxes will consume all the spaces and add some stickers of the black space.
Looks easy, but the stickers really help a lot. 2ns week of April (week 15).
Easy layout, just divide your notebook to 8 🙂 and put some stickers.
This takes me longer to do some even boxes. But worth it, looks good. Sometimes we have to experiment with some layout as you will get bored to check your bullet journal. That’s why I usually use stickers to get more motivated and also the pens/markers you use.
The last week of the month. Stickers really help to design your bujo if you are not talented like me to draw the entire pages. In my opinion, the bullet journal is not the design the most important is to be organized and be productive. Don’t waste your time to just sit and decorate your bujo the whole day that’s not productive at all. But of course it will practice your talent like sketching and drawing but for me, there is time to do your practice separate from your skills and talent and the bullet journal design.
I hope you like it, Thank you for visiting my blog.
