Are you having an existential crisis because you were never interested in Young Justice TV but now lack the context necessary to read fic with Khaji Da even though you read Blue Beetle, or are you normal?

Question for the DPxDC crowd
what do you guys actually consider liminal? Like, I genuinely don't know anymore
because early on it was pretty much just Jazz having grown up with ectoplasm in the house for years and in her food, which makes sense, and it was an extremely rare thing
then it got expanded to Sam and Tucker
Then members of the Bat crew that got resurrected by a Lazarus pit(and Dick for some reason? He's never canonically died guys...)
Now it seems to be the entirety of Amity Parkers, All the Bat clan, half of Gotham, Half the Justice Leage, the entirety of the League of Assassins
is it just having come into contact with ectoplasm/Lazarus Pits? Prolonged exposure? Because it's starting to feel like everyone is liminal besides the guys in white for some reason
Like you guys have started using Liminal to basically replace the word "Ecto-contaminated" There is a canon word for the thing you guys have started using liminal to describe

I can't even lie to you—there is nothing wilder to watch during leaks season than seeing people find a detail and hyper-speculate...only for the post right after it to debunk it's entire premise, either with more context for the leak / image or the show itself

[shaking and biting] but what does it MEAN. what does it SAY what is the THEME
#akkdlflf i watched this long lecture video abt austrian national identity and the researcher said 'the austrians are quite adept at#selling the austro hungarian monarchy back to tourists incl ones from former parts of the empire... but even in the imperial nostalgia they#don't want back multilingualism or multiculturalism or any of what it actually was'#(it was a lot abt the way in which austria deals with orban's hungary in and after the 2015 refugee crisis)#ajskgldo and that just made me think about... how pointless some things feel. both in fiction and in academic research#you CAN say meaningful things about almost any topic and with almost any argument! but in some strands of history trying to 'uncover events'#with no exploration of the context and what it all MEANS and what the things we think about it mean#is the most prevalent and popular type of research :/ like there's a reason i overrely on hamann's bio of rudolf because her central thesis#is that he wasnt a crazy murderer but someone with a forward-thinking political vision that went as far as suggesting a sort of 'proto-EU'#among other things#so like. she is looking at what it all MEANS!!!#and like. my favourite todolf fanfics are also like that 😂😭 perhaps not abt politics but about suffering and power dynamics and guilt#same for original fiction. i'm never happy if a book i'm reading isnt saying something#or then again - this is more personal pickiness but. they should also be saying something NEW AND INTERESTING#a lot of the time. sometimes if you have a fave trope you can just enjoy it over and over#but idk even tropey stuff can say things#ajlsldkfkf i'm just so tired of kitsch in all its forms and also of bad science

Hi! Idk if ur still taking requests for little snippets, but is it possible to request a little snippet of NJ helping Loui with his messy curly hair in like- a hot day where humidity is a bitch? 👁️👁️
*🩴*
As a guy with curly hair most times, humidity is such a bitch and happens whenever it feels like here in Jersey, no consistency. So this hit close to home lol.
Hot and Humid (The Worst Combo)
Every door in the state house was open, along with the windows. The Southern States were out barbecuing and the Northern States were suffering, except New Jersey.
It’s not like Jersey liked the heat, it was a pain in the ass, but it did mean he could go swimming and get good southern food, so he can’t complain too much. The problem was the humidity, it was ungodly humid out. Jersey knew humid intimately but this was ridiculous.
Almost every state was either in the pool or on the side relaxing or barbecuing. Almost. The only state that wasn’t with everyone was Louisiana, which Jersey would understand if it wasn’t for the fact that this is weather Loui would absolutely be in.
Jersey was about to go inside to find him when his name was called. Standing in the doorway was Loui, his hair frizzy and messy, looking just as miserable as most of the NE states felt.
Louisiana only had to say one word and Jersey would be at his beck and call. “Help”.
Jersey dragged Loui to his(Jersey's) room, looking at what products he had that could work, he realized he was severely lacking and would need to get more stuff again. He gave Loui a juice box and the tv remote and got to work.
Hair was hard, especially curly hair, it’s hard and annoying at the best of times and at the worst it’s near impossible. Jersey was basically an expert in all things hair but he was definitely wishing that Loui had come to him in the early morning before the humidity got too bad.
It took two hours but Jersey was able to put Loui’s hair into cornrows, that way if he wanted he could go swimming with the others. By the time the two got back outside some of the food was ready and it somehow got hotter and more humid, but at least now Loui’s hair wasn’t a mess.
(And if there was some magic involved to make sure his hair didn’t get affected by the humidity again, then that was between him and the demon he calls his friend).

Today's fanfic writing adventures: reading adademic articles on human sacrifice in Gaul written in French, because dictionaries of mythology all include some weirdly specific details about how the sacrifices were carried out that I couldn't find an actual source for, and this french guy seems to be The leading expert.
I do not speak French
But that's okay, because he cites most of the authors he's drawing from in the original latin, rather than translating them
I also do not speak Latin
But after a couple of hours with translation software and vague memories of my french gcse (which included very few, if any, words relating to human sacrifice or pre-christian pagan religion) I can now confirm...
the article also doesn't cite an actual fucking source for this

So i watched the Winchesters now, because of the news about the finale, and i have to say. The show is actually brilliant. Not specifically as a show on itself, it's pretty good as a show at best (the internal logic, introduction to the world and characters are lacking to wobbly, but it's definitely enjoyable), but as a processing of supernatural. It really is "Dean sending his parents to therapy to work through his Mommy and Daddy issues". It's also not as repressed as supernatural and a lot of US american tv shows in general tend to be, so that is refreshing. It's kind of earnest which is nice. Also i cannot talk about it without mentioning Carlos, i am in love with Carlos, the incredibly chill and as far as i can say positive way this bisexual male character was introduced was fantastic. And his first scene, as a bi man i had to pause to breathe, and the camera/editing definitely supported that. Like that was celebratory not mocking.

Hey y'all- lemme get a little honest about white privilege and ignorance for a second. We're talking about me in this case. Bc I wanna send a thank you to people I've seen on Twitter discussing the use of the 'nickname' Calico Jack uses for Edward in fanfics.
I've been working on a reunion fight between Stede and Ed for weeks now and in my first draft of it I wrote something like: "Ol' *Nickname*, really is an evil monster down to his evil heart, right?" being said by Ed to Stede.
The intention was to use this nickname as the painful characterization it was in the show as a point for Ed to push how he was feeling. That he felt like all the blame was being unfairly thrown his way, like Stede was looking him as nothing more than the monster everyone else has seen, like Stede was seeing the same racist caricature that so many have assumed was all there was to him.
I thought this reasoning to use to nickname as the slur it was, was enough to justify using it. But when I started seeing the discussion of it, I started to get worried. Most of the posts about the use of the name were to not include it as a nickname, as it isn't really one. To instead replace it with "Beardie" or other things in a context of friendliness. But I wasn't really using it that way, so I wasn't sure how the input applied to the scene I was writing... But I chose to err on the side of caution.
I've gone ahead and re-written the line as: "’The ol’ Demon really is rotten, all the way through his evil fucking bones right into his evil fucking heart’, right?" to just use a different nickname, though the passage loses as bit of the point I was going for...
But - as a white fic writer - my priority is not to be "making points" at the expense of my POC readers.
Just food for thought in case other fic writers run into this sort of question themselves. Lines can be rewritten, even if they don't work in the same way as you as originally wanted the dialogue to go. But POC people in fandom deal with enough racism as is, I do not want to pile onto it in making this space further unsafe for them to participate in.
Remember, education is a never ending endeavor. There are more than a few times when lack of education will fail you. Listen and adjust, it something we all need to keep working at because adding to the suffering of POC's for one's own self interest will never be the right way to go about things.

but being subjected to Birdie Wing is dope and good!
Thanks! Glad people enjoy when I get on my Birdie Wing Nonsense, and I look forward to Season Two with DEEP anticipation. Sure, there’s no Golf Mafia anymore, but when we get Jojo Powers But For Golf ‘friendly competitions’ at a minigolf place at some random mall? I think that’s still ridiculous enough to make up for it. Especially because we the audience continue to know that Eve’s on the run from the Golf Mafia, who may well reappear when we least expect them.
If the climax of this show DOESN’T involve Evil Golf CEO Mom trying to get Eve out of the way (probably lethally) at the same time as the Golf Mafia hitmen reemerge, during a match, then I will be disappointed in the writers. You know some of Eve’s opponents will look at the green being increasingly riddled with bullets and go ‘hm. How does this change my trajectory?’ It’ll be great.
On the other hand, they might still do the ‘Eve is Aoi’s long-lost half-sister’ reveal and if so I will be quite wroth. It’s not just a ‘surprise! They’re not gay, just sisters’ cop-out, it makes things weaker if Evil Golf CEO Mom can just try and shove Eve into the same mold she’s made for Aoi, and not the uptown golf-downtown golf thing we’ve had going on to this point. Plus, then Evil Golf CEO Mom WON’T hire a corporate hit so Golf Amuro can take a dramatically appropriate bullet for Eve. (I’m still holding out hope HE’S her secretly significant parent and just forgot her existence somehow. Maybe Aoi’s dad died since Eve got amnesia’d and he helped Golf Amuro out of HIS tragic mysterious amnesia? I say, with it not even being confirmed Aoi’s dad is dead. It’s just that all the framing around him is just like… dude’s dead.)
At least Eve can’t possibly be secret half-sisters with EVERY Promising Young High School Golfer Or Caddy In Japan we’ve seen her be totally gay around. There is that.

Finally got words for a specific cardcaptor!Kev Osmobeast au that’s been in my head for ages.
In which Gar gets good news all but against his will.
~~
“Oh, that is a nice layout.” Gar would have to take his word for it. That one card looked pretty ominous, with the faceless cloaked figure and all, but the fortuneteller was smiling bright and warm like a sunny day.
“What’s it mean,” he asked, leaning further into the stall like that might allow him some insight. Or maybe it was just the sunflower instinct kicking in. The man was very handsome.
“Alright,” he said, “so these three cards, in the context of a general reading, represent what’s happening or going to happen in your life. Shadow can mean things are going to be rough and chaotic, but you’ve also got Rain and Glow, which say things are going to be good. Especially with Change here, that’s for the catalyst of whatever is happening.”
“So,” Gar said, “something is going to change and it won’t be a complete mess, basically.” The man snorted.
“Kinda?” He tapped the last card he’d indicated, with a lizard on it. “Change represents connections and understanding. Along with the other three the meaning gets a little muddled but it’s positive either way- you’re going to come to a new understanding of yourself and come out happier, or you’re going to connect with somebody who makes you happier, or, something like that. Life’s about to get better for you.”
“Thought you said you weren’t in the business of platitudes,” Gar said before he could stop himself, disappointment and hope both pinging around in his chest. It was silly, honestly, he hadn’t even come over here expecting anything. His latest had invited him out and then just, not shown, and his subsequent quest for some retail therapy had found him in a back corner full of sculptures and tech and fortunes told for a reasonable price. Normally he wouldn’t have bothered, grabbed one of the very nice sculptures the man was selling at most, but he was upset, power radiated from the stall, and the man’d sworn-
“I’m not,” he said firmly. “You shuffled the deck, you drew the cards, I’m just interpreting them. Trust me, I’ve been run out of two towns over this, I’m not gonna start lying to make fuckers happy now.” With another little snort, he flashed Gar a toothy smirk and met his eyes. Damn they were brown. “Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Hero, but things are gonna get better whether you like it or not.” And there was the little ball of hope trying to get bigger.
“What about the other two?” The smirk softened into that easy smile as the man turned his attention back to the cards.
“This one represents what’s going to cause everything and I honestly couldn’t tell you what it’s trying to say right now. Illusion doesn’t normally come up in this spot, and with the muddled message- you’re going to see something that changes your life maybe? Or someone will see something in you? Something along those lines.” Gar chewed a nail unconsciously.
“Maybe it’s just, what it says on the tin? An illusion?” It would fit how good things seemed to go in his life. Have good thing, good thing crumbles. Have good thing, good thing dies. Seemed more likely. But the man shook his head.
“It wouldn’t be unheard of,” he said, “but you’ve got Cloud in this spot here, for the end goal or result, and along with the other four cards that’s solidly happiness. Even if what starts the whole thing is an illusion, you’ll still come out happier for it.” Fuck. Here he’d been, in a nice little rut, and this guy has to come along and give that soft bit of his battered heart something to latch onto.
“If things go to shit, I’m coming back for a refund,” he said, as if it hadn’t been an all of fifteen dollar reading. The man just smirked at him.
“And when they don’t, you can come back and apologize for ever doubting me.” Sighing, Gar smiled despite himself. Much as his head was calling bullshit, his heart was lighter and the man had a face you had to enjoy.
“I’ll bring by a cake or something, mister-”
“Levin. Kevin Levin. And I’d really prefer a hamburger.” With a quiet chuckle, he shook his head.
“I’ll see what I can do.”

the fanfic writer's struggle between "this media doesn't entirely lend itself to fanfic and I don't want to be seen as one of those people that only views media as a set of characters to be shipped together" and "I consider myself a serious writer and I have an idea that could really add another layer of dimension to this story/character, and I really want to write it"
was gonna put this next bit in the tags but it got too wordy so
It's like. some media is very easy to write fanfic for. superhero movies. star wars. action movies. things like that. It's not that these movies can't have important or strong messages, or that the fanfic can't also have genuine presence as a piece of writing, but the nature of it makes it much easier to build off of and even, sometimes, improve with a well-written fanfic
and there's some media that I would never consider writing fanfiction for at all. historical movies and biopics jump to mind. I mean, I love Bohemian Rhapsody, and y'all know I find Ben Hardy incredibly attractive, but I wouldn't ever write a BoRhap fic because Roger Taylor is a very real living person with his own history, and it feels disrespectful to fanfic-ize that.
But there's this gray area that I struggle with, where the media has enough richness and depth to its messages to make me want to explore them, but is genuine or serious enough for the prospect of writing fanfiction about it to feel almost disrespectful. I have an idea based on the Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires that would expand on the themes of subtle abuse and domestic misogyny that the book talks about, but I'm afraid if I wrote it people might see it as falling into the same trap as the book itself warns about (i.e. people being willing to ignore a person's misgivings/crimes just because they're attractive), even though the fic is meant to expand on these themes rather than ignoring them.
And it's hitting me again after I watched the Last Voyage of the Demeter. It's right in the sweet spot where it's like... I have a cool idea that I think would work with the setup of the universe and themes, and would be consistent with the characters and potentially even provide a bit more depth/backstory to characters who otherwise aren't given much, but the tone of the movie is just serious enough where it feels wrong to say 'hey look I wrote fanfic about this'
