Tasty cake. No grasshoppers needed.

When I was in high school, I took cooking as an elective. I'm not any great shakes at it, mind, but I can toss a cassarole dish in the oven and get something edible in the end, generally. There was one recipe, however, that I absolutely adored and was sure the hang on to so I could make it again in the future.

Naturally, the recipe was missing the next time Mum and I went to make it, so we have to sort of re-invent a little every time.

But the recipe is:

GRASSHOPPER CAKE

Now, for those of you who are unaware, at least in America 'grasshopper' in cooking normally means chocolate-mint. No actual grasshoppers involved. You can, occasionally get little boxes of grasshoppers as novelty food items, but they're not a protein staple here. So if you're wondering how on earth you can have grasshopper cake without grasshoppers, there's your answer.

(If, for some reason, you would like to add actual grasshoppers for protein content, try your local pet supply store. You may have to make due with crickets though.)

Now, the recipe goes something like this. You will need:

1 box white or yellow cake mix 1 jar hot fudge topping 2-4(?) tsps mint flavored stuff 1 pint whipping cream Food colouring (optional)

The original recipe specifically called for a white cake, because you were supposed to add green food colour to it. Yellow works just as well and, fun fact! Yellow is one of the primary colours that makes up green, so you can still add food colouring if you want to. Also, the original recipe called for creme de menthe as the mint flavor. Mum and I just use regular old extract.

You make the boxed cake according to the instructions, only you add food colouring if you like and some mint flavouring. How much? That's one of the things Mum and I can't remember. It's one or two teaspoons and every time we have a debate over which and every time, I'm pretty sure we do something different. Never had the cake taste bad, though, so I would say two tsps if you really like mint and one if you're a bit shy of strong mint flavor.

Once the cake is partially cooled (but not all of the way) heat your fudge topping to the point you can easily get it out of the jar and spread it over the top. You don't need the topping to be completely melted - the warm cake will help it move.

Let cool. Possibly refrigerate, if you're in a hurry.

When your cake is good and cool, mix up your whipped cream. Add more food colour if you like, whatever you prefer for sweeteners (if any) and another teaspoon or two of mint flavor.

If there's anything left once you and the entire family have sampled it, stick it in the fridge.

Variations:

At one point I did this with orange instead of mint. I forget why, but it was also tasty.

At one of my former jobs I had a coworker who loved choco-mint and cake and was sadly diabetic. I discovered that Pillsbury makes a very nice sugar free boxed yellow cake and Smucker's has you covered on sugar free hot fudge topping. Sweeteners, of course, have lots of options. TASTY CAKE FOR ALL!

Actually: please jut wear gloves while handling peppers. #I can eat those puppies raw no problem but I am miserable when it gets into my eyes.

Golden Kingdom Breakfast and Skyfish and Chips

Still feeding friends this week! For breakfast, ended up cooking with ingredients that I had around: pancakes, sausage, leftover soup

But the Skyfish is where the fun is. Stuffed swai with cooked marinated beef, carrot, scrambled egg, broccoli (the cabbage got left in the b&b and I had to improvise) and then wrapped it in a tofu skin and battered and fried them up. The wings were potatoes mandolined thin and rolled up and slightly battered with the same batter and fried.

It's like fish and chips plus! I don't know what else to say! Chilchuck was right, some ale with this is pretty great. Prep under the read more!

Legacy's more likely to light something on fire by accident- unless it's a recipe you taught him! he listens VERY closely when you teach him how to cook! but still, he prefers to focus on decorating instead, his height allowing him to hang pretty lights and dangling stars wherever he wants until the whole room is sparkling, and Legacy chitters and chirps to his heart's content. since they can't separate, Ajax is the one to greet you when you return home, sweeping you into his arms and spinning you around with a boisterous laugh

"Happy birthday!" he sings, and it's one of the best phrases you've ever heard

all three of you treasure time together when it's just the three of you, so for this evening, you don't invite anyone else over. you and Ajax dance around the room after dinner- all of your favorites, of course- and with an adoring grin he leans in and presses a tender kiss to your cheek. there's a sudden spark of violet lightning, your hair standing on end as Legacy promptly pulls control of their shared body from Ajax's hands, rumbling happily and squeezing you tight. his wings flutter and flit rapidly from his excitement, head bumping against your cheek, careful not to jab you with his horns. before you know it he's tugged you over to the couch, wrapping his arms around you and nuzzling against you, trills slipping out of his mouth. you pet his head, raking your hands through his fluffy ginger hair and lilac fluff, and are met with a few playful nibbles, nothing ever deep enough to harm you or break skin as Legacy purrs deeply, something that sounds like "Happy birthday", and you smile all over again

🥳 📜 Happy Purim! 🎭 🎉

Happy Purim, all! Slightly belated, but it’s Shushan Purim, at least. Like I do every year, here are some pictures of my shaloch manot, the gifts of food I gave to family and friends.

This year I made lemon and caramel hamentashen, and turtle brownies (in cupcake form). I also included pink lady apples, and also chocolate cherries that I found at the dollar store. mmm, chocolate cherries...

I found some new butterfly stationery to use for my gift cards! It's so pretty, and works perfectly in my printer, and I don't have to do any cutting like I did with the old stationery. There's also matching washi tape, but I didn't use it this year-- maybe next year or elsewhere I guess.

Didn't wear a costume this year (no time), but I did finally get a chance to wear my new sky whale skirt. It's the cutest, I'm so happy I was finally able to find it in stock. Everyone was complimentary, I definitely need to wear it more often. Also, I found a set of (purple) maracas at World Market that I used to boo Haman during the Megillah reading. 🪇

I hope those celebrating are having a fun and joyful holiday, and I wish I could share my treats with all my lovely followers. 🥰💖🎉

The Harper pregnancy asks got my brain juices flowing so please indulge me for a hot minute.

What if PC got married down the road and it turns out that her spouse is infertile. Spouse seems blissfully unaware and PC thinks it's on her end it out so she approaches Harper for help. Who initially sees this as an opportunity to just make some more cash via pictures or videos (the way he does during his Friday visits in game) and test some new fertility drugs he's cooked up. While she's happily taking them, Harper is looking through his list of regulars to find matches who look closer to PC's spouse. Can't have the kid looking TOO different, right? And he prides himself on providing excellent service.

He starts inviting her over twice a week under the guise of treating her infertility while in reality, he's hypnotizing her and letting her get fucked by his regulars. Really, just a way to make some quick cash. He's not TOO emotionally involved in this.

But our good doctor pretty much starts salivating when PC does end up pregnant and shows up for regular check ups. He cannot stop touching her belly, maybe shows her how to knead her breasts to help with lactation later on, takes so many measurements and asks invasive questions, is just a general creep who is quickly becoming obsessed with having PC carry his kid. He's so mad at his past self, he should have been the one to knock her up, everything else be damned. He can hypnotize her still, sure, and he does so (rubbing his dick all over the curve of her belly. Making her use her growing breasts. Having her bounce on his dick later on and Harper rubs his hands all over her, he cannot get enough) but it's just not the same.

So when PC shows up again a year or two after having the first kid, looking down and miserable because her and her spouse have been trying again but it seems the treatment needs to be reapplied, Harper jumps on the opportunity. He becomes obsessed the second PC says 'We'd like to have another baby'. He acts all sympathetic and soothing and reassures her that he will look into it again, to please come back in a week. Because he wants to prepare for this properly. Meanwhile, his mind switched to the fast lane and his thoughts are racing. No way he's contacting his regulars again. This time, it'll be his child. He can potentially explain away the looks by going 'PC is an orphan, maybe the kid got their looks from PC's parents' and he is curious to see how his child's pregnancy data/stats would compare to the other one but that's when it hits him. He can give PC stronger meds. Give her additional shots. She could have twins. Maybe triplets.

Harper's hand is down his pants before he can stop himself.

He'll fuck her so well. Fill up her aching, empty womb, again and again and again. Maybe hypnotize her and make her stay after hours so he can truly indulge. Take a video of her sitting on an examination table, legs spread and gaze glassy. Harper instructing her to say things like 'I'm going to be impregnated by Doctor Harper today. I couldn't be happier' or 'Doctor, please, come inside of me.' She'd look so pretty and big and she'd have to visit him so often to make sure the pregnancy is progressing as intended. He might get to indulge himself every day. Take so many pictures. Let his hands roam, chart every inch of skin and jot down the results. Get his mouth on her breasts. He really could induce early lactation this time around, drink her creamy milk, get samples for his research.

Harper cannot fucking wait.

The next appointment PC shows up for, Harper's waiting for her with a smile and some very good news. (And maybe, just maybe, he is already planning her third pregnancy.)
