If you are an Australian resident:

There is currently a petition open on the Australian Parliament's government website, calling for a ceasefire and an end to Israel's occupation of Palestine.

After four weeks of collecting signatures, the petition will be directly submitted to the House of Representatives, where a minister will be requested to respond.

As far as petitions go, this one is probably our best option. It is the only way that we, as individuals, are able to directly make requests from the House.

How to participate

The Rural Dionysia is meant to be a smaller competition than its urban counterpart, as such, we have selected only 3 categories:

Freestyle poetry

Modern hymns

“Complete the fragment”

Freestyle poetry

Your poem can be about any chosen topic (myth, personal experience etc.) in any written format. It doesn't have to be religious in nature.

Modern hymn

An hymn must sing the praises of a deity of your choice. Unlike the "freestyle poetry", your work must be of religious nature to fit in this category.

Complete the Fragment

Each year, we choose a fragment from an Ancient Greek poet to work with. The challenge is that the initial fragment must be included somewhere in your piece in its original order. This means you can fill the gaps however you want, but you can’t switch the order of the words in your piece or remove words from the original fragment.

Here is the fragment selected for this 2023 edition: Paen 16 by Pindar (52q Oxyrhynchus papyrus; late 2nd century AD; trans. William H. Race; Loeb 56)

General rules

Roleplay and fanfic are not acceptable submissions. This is a religious festival, please respect our faith and do not submit an entry if you are roleplaying or writing fanfiction.

Unlike with the City Dionysia, entries do not necessarily have to be about specific deities or Hellenic polytheism except for the “Modern Hymn” category, which has to be dedicated to one or many gods of your choice.

There are no meter restrictions. This is up to the writer.

All stories, myths, and poems must be entered using the submissions button.

All entries must be tagged for the category they are being submitted to. Entries must also be tagged for potentially triggering content and squicks.

An entry may only be submitted to a single category.

Each person may only submit one entry per category each year.

Winners for each category will be decided by popular vote.

The Exchange That Was Promised: Jaime x Brienne Smut Swap 2024 is here! This is the fourth and final year, so let's DO THIS!

How The Smut Swap Works:

Interested writers will sign up and will then be assigned prompts from another participant. They must then write one completed fic, rated M or E, incorporating one (or more) of these prompts. Fics are then posted anonymously between February 9 and February 11, with the big writer reveal on February 16!

By the end of the exchange, you will have written one smutty fic for another writer, and someone will have written one smutty fic for you.

Similar to other exchanges, if you’d like to participate, you will:

Sign up via a Google form;

Fill out a prompt survey on said form, and

Be matched to someone for whom you will write a fic using their prompt fills.

This exchange will be different in a few ways:

Like it says on the tin, this is for smut only, so all fics will be rated M or E for sexual content. All participants must be willing and able to write something of a sexual nature.

There will not only be a minimum word count (500 words), there will also be a maximum word count (5,000 words).

One of your prompts must be audio or visual in nature — a song, video, photo, moodboard, .gif, podcast, etc.

Due to the subject matter and ratings, only writers ages 18+ are invited to participate.

Mergwenthur Week 2022 is a week-long event dedicated celebrating the ship of Merlin, Gwen, and Arthur, consisting of a seven-day long prompt challenge. Each day has a word, trope, and color prompt assigned to it to reflect an aspect of Mergwenthur alongside an episode from the show.

All creators are welcome to participate. Content is open to fic, art, edits, gifs, manips, meta, poetry, podfic, and whatever else you can creatively come up with during these seven days.

You do not need to do something for each day. Participate as much or as little as you want.

You may tag #mergwenthurweek2022 and your content will be reblogged to our main Tumblr, mergwenthurweek.tumblr.com and our Twitter, Mergwenthurweek. If you are submitting to AO3, feel free to add your creations to the MergwenthurWeek2022 collection.

HOW DO PROMPTS WORK?

The themes of each day are inspired by Mergwenthur. You can use the word prompts, trope prompts, or color prompts for whatever you make, or even write fix-it fics or make fanart related to the chosen episode.

RULES

Nov 6 - 12 will focus on pre-Arcane canon

Nov 20 - 26 is all about post season 1 speculation

Each week will come with a set of daily prompts you're welcome to use, but all content is accepted. If you want to do your own thing or pair up with another November prompt event, you're welcome to do so!

Rules & Guidelines

Fanworks created for this event should be focused on Arcane character(s). LoL characters are welcome as supporting/side characters, but not as the stars of the show. So "Mel and Jayce try to resist as Swain's forces take over Piltover, aided by Machine Herald Viktor" is a-okay, but "Swain takes over Piltover and has a chat with a captive Mel as he finally wins the city" is not. Reader inserts and original characters are also allowed, so long as canon Arcane characters remain the focus.

NSFW or potentially triggering content, even if canon-typical, must be properly tagged with any applicable content warnings. We trust you to only submit NSFW works if you are 18+. Make use of the read-more bar to hide sensitive content, or host your work on AO3 or Twitter.

This event allows all ships and themes so long as everything is appropriately tagged.

OAKLAND — A well-known transgender activist was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for murdering three family members in a brutal and frenzied attack that the judge said was the worst he’d seen in three decades.

Dana Rivers, 68, of San Jose, was found guilty last year of murdering Oakland resident Charlotte Reed, 56, her wife Patricia Wright, 57, and Wright’s 19-year-old son, Benny Toto Diambu-Wright, in an attack inside the victims’ home. Prosecutors say she used a handgun equipped with a silencer to shoot the victims, stabbed Reed 47 times as the couple slept in their bedroom and then set the garage on fire in an attempt to cover her tracks.

“It is a horrible thing to sentence someone to die in prison, and I don’t take that lightly,” Judge Scott Patton said in a Wednesday court hearing. “But this is the most depraved crime I ever handled in the criminal justice system in 33 years. Frankly, you deserve to spend the rest of your life in prison.”

Rivers, who first claimed self-defense during the guilt phase of her trial, then argued she was legally insane at the time, did not speak during sentencing. Wright’s brother submitted a letter to the court, in which he recounted the stress of going through the crime scene and how Rivers’ turned his sister’s warm and welcoming home into a blood bath.

Richard Wright said his sister was the “rubber band” that held their family together. She was an artist, a “peacemaker,” and “really wanted to be a parent.”

“When Dana Rivers killed my sister, she broke that rubber band,” his letter says. “What held my family together was gone.”

Rivers has been in jail since Nov. 11, 2016, the same day the murders were committed. She was arrested as she left the victims’ home, covered in their blood and headed toward a motorcycle that was parked nearby. The motive, according to prosecutors, was a mix of personal animus and anger at Reed for leaving an all-women biker gang.

Reed and Rivers met at the Menlo Park Veterans Affairs Center in Palo Alto, where they formed a friendship that included Rivers recruiting Reed into the motorcycle club known as the Deviants MC. They became estranged after Reed left the club, but Rivers methodically convinced her to restart their friendship to give herself an opportunity to commit the murders, Deputy District Attorney Abigail Mulvihill argued at trial.

Before her arrest, Rivers was best known as a schoolteacher who became an international news story when she came out as transgender to her students in a high school in Antelope, California. She was subsequently fired for sharing details of her transition, then sued the district and received $150,000 in a settlement. In the aftermath, she became an activist for transgender rights, and ultimately moved to the Bay Area to restart her life as an educator.

Patton denied a motion for a new trial filed by Rivers’ attorney, which argued that prosecutors committed misconduct and that the judge prevented relevant exculpatory evidence from being heard. Patton said the issues raised ranged from “trivial” to “frankly quite ridiculous,” and called the evidence of Rivers’ guilt “overwhelming.”

Each month we will celebrate a different kind of writing, from original writing to different genres of fanfiction. The Ocean will celebrate on the first weekend of the month, and the Pond will celebrate on the third weekend.

How To Participate:

Simply submit whatever writing you have that falls under the scope for that month to the relevant blog, letting them know that you are submitting specifically for that month's Fishing for Treasures celebration. Both the Ocean and the Pond will have channels set up in their discord servers so you can drop links in there, or you can submit a link via the blog.

BALTIMORE — For the third time, a federal judge set a new trial date for Marilyn Mosby's federal perjury case.

The judge's order released Monday indicates jury selection for Mosby's trial is now set for Oct. 31 with the trial starting on Nov. 2.

This time, the delay is for Mosby's new defense attorney, a public defender, to get up to speed on the case after the withdrawal of her legal team.

Mosby's trial was already postponed once in April 2022 at the request of the defense and opposition from the government. In September 2022, the trial was delayed again to March 2023.

Last week, Maryland U.S. Attorney Erek Barron filed a joint status report to inform the court that the government and the defense will be available for trial starting on Oct. 31. The judge had to sign off on the proposed schedule.

The approved schedule follows.

May 1: Meet and confer regarding expert witnesses and pretrial motions

June 1: Deadline for expert disclosures

June 30: Deadline for the filing of pretrial motions and for supplemental expert disclosures

July 14: Responses due for pretrial motions and for the filing of motions to exclude experts and supplement expert disclosures

The case against Baltimore's former top prosecutor

Mosby was indicted in January 2022 on federal charges of perjury when she withdrew money from her deferred compensation accounts, saying she was facing financial hardships because of the COVID-19 pandemic and making a false statement on a loan application. Prosecutors said Mosby lied to avoid paying taxes on the money.

Mosby's trial was already postponed once in April to Sept. 19 at the request of the defense and opposition from the government. In September, the trial was delayed again until March 2023.

Mosby faces 20 years in prison if convicted on the four federal charges she faces.
