Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Neo Vision Genesis Rhapsodos Banner

The banner for Neo Vision Genesis Rhapsodos from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII just showed up in the Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (FFBE) mobile game.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius x Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion Collab Event

Been looking forward to the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (#ad) collab event ever since I first heard about it showing up in the Japanese version of FFBE.

After what feels like having to wait for forever, the aforementioned collab is finally here in the Global or English version of the game.

This event introduces a couple of new chars who are all from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (CCFF7R) and they are as follows:

Zack Fair

Angeal Hewley

Cissnei

Genesis Rhapsodos

I talk more about this collab in this post, but to be more precise, what I was really looking forward to about this event was Neo Vision Genesis Rhapsodos.

Ever since I started playing FFBE, I’ve been hoping for Genesis to be added to this game. That’s because Genesis Rhapsodos is currently my absolute, most fave Final Fantasy char.

Needless to say, was really happy when I heard the news that he’d finally been added to the Japanese version of FFBE thanks to the CCFF7R collab event.

As soon as I heard the news about Genesis, I started preparing for his eventual arrival in the Global version of FFBE.

Among other things, this includes not using my lapis to pull on banners. This also means having to skip multiple chars unless I happened to get lucky with tickets.

The last time I pulled on a banner using lapis was for Neo Vision Flaring Aether Rain, and the reason why I did that is because of his Leader Skill.

Rain’s Leader Skill is called Passionate Aether, and it has the following effect:

Boost ATK and MAG by 500% and boost DEF and SPR by 200% for fire or FFBE category units

There are a lot of fire and/or FFBE category units. And in the Global version of the game, most of our Global-exclusive or Global-first chars are all under the FFBE category.

In short, having even just 1 copy of Flaring Aether Rain will enable players to boost the stats of a lot of their chars.

But, more importantly, at least for me, is the fact that one of Genesis’s categories in this game is fire, which means that he can benefit from Flaring Aether Rain’s Leader Skill. As far as I’m aware, so far, Rain is the only char who can buff fire chars by 500%.

I want to buff and boost Genesis as much as I possibly can, so I made sure to get Rain even if it meant having to use my lapis to do so. I talk more about that in this post.

Anyway, right now, my Flaring Aether Rain is at Ex+ 2/3. Also have 2 dupes of him which is equivalent to 100 fragments. Gonna need 100 more fragments to get him to Ex+ 3/3.

I’m hoping to be lucky enough to be able to get more dupes of Rain while pulling for Genesis so that I can get him to Ex+ 3/3 sooner rather than later. Getting him to Ex+ 3/3 will also give me access to his Vision Card (VC) which I want to equip to Genesis.

Neo Vision Genesis Rhapsodos Information

When the Japanese version of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius first announced that Genesis was coming soon, they didn’t give any more details about him so was free to speculate on what kind of unit he’ll be in this game.

Of course, I really want him to be good. I’ll still pull regardless, but of course I want him to be great.

I also really want Genesis to have a CG LB and to have a brave shift form. Maybe he can have his wing out in his shift form. Maybe he can wear his Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 outfit in one form then he can wear his Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII outfit in the other form.

I was kinda expecting Genesis to be a physical fire DPS since that’s what he is in the Final Fantasy Record Keeper (FFRK) mobile game. Or maybe they could make him a hybrid char so he can deal both physical and magical damage or something, I suppose.

Anyway, soon enough, we finally got more details about NV Genesis:

He’s an SLB unit, no brave shift

He’s a fire mage

He doesn’t have a CG LB

Not gonna lie - was kinda really disappointed about this. Well, at least Genesis is finally a playable char in this game.

Still can’t wait for him to get to the Global version of FFBE and will still pull for him, of course. But there are a lot of things that I’m disappointed about. I wish that FFBE had put more effort into this.

I wish that they could have given Genesis a CG LB, even if it’s really short. I wish that he could have gotten a brave shift form.

It also sucks to know that he seems to be locked to the fire element. I get why he’s a mage but I’m kinda miffed about that too because mages aren’t that good in this game. Well, there are a few good mages but most of the best DPS are all physical.

Heck, even the best mages might as well be physical too because they deal magical-based damage that’s physical-type. This means that while they make use of the MAG stat, they require physical killers and, unlike actual mages who use MAG and need magical killers, they can be imbued with any element.

At least it looks like Genesis is actually good. He’s being compared to NVA (Neo Vision Awakenable) Black Mage Golbez (from Final Fantasy IV) for having a Meteor-like ability that makes use of his magic and MP to deal damage.

The problem is that this ability of Gen’s is locked to the fire element while Golbez’s Meteor is not. Meteor can be imbued with any element so Golbez can easily fit in any team.

I’m really hoping that when Genesis gets added to the Global version of FFBE, he’ll be updated to also have the Meteor ability. Maybe they’ll give him some other upgrades and such too.

I mean chars like Flaring Aether Rain and Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII got upgraded so it’s not impossible. But I know that it’s not that likely either. Still, let me hope and dream, okay? LOL.

Anyway, in the Japanese version of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion collab event started with banners for Zack Fair and Angeal Hewley. The Genesis banner showed up about a week later.

But in the Global version of FFBE, much to my surprise, the Genesis banner showed up first. Not complaining since I’ve been looking forward to Genesis for what feels like forever.

Maybe Zack and Angeal will show up next week but who knows? There could be more changes and such.

Anyway, like I said, I knew it was unlikely for Genesis to get any upgrades but was still really disappointed when that turned out to be the case. This is because he’s not “premium”, isn’t it? Sigh. Well, at least that means it will be easier to get him to NV Ex+ 3/3.

Update: wrote that line I just crossed out days before pulling on Genesis’s banner. I’d been able to save so much lapis that I had very high hopes of being able to 3/3 Genesis right away. Didn’t think that things would turn out to be this bad. Now I’m basically all out of lapis with nothing much to show for it. Eff this game.

Vision Cards Comparison

Apparently, one of, if not the, best VC for Genesis is the Dazzling Demoness Vision Card. So I’m really sad that I missed out on this card.

Dazzling Demoness gives +500 MP and +120 MAG. It also has the following effects:

Increase MP and MAG by 100%

Increase static MP and MAG by 500

Increase physical and magic damage against aquatics and insects by 100%

Decrease MP used by 50%

The above effects applies to all chars while the ones below will only apply to FFBE units:

Increase chain modifier cap by 100%

Increase equipment MAG by 200% and accuracy by 25% when single wielding any weapon

Dazzling Demoness must have shown up twice or so by now but each time it became available, I never bothered to try and get it. Because I didn’t think that I needed it seeing as the chars who I have built are all mostly physical DPS.

But, as it turns out, Genesis wants this card too. Argh! If only I’d known that while the banner that featured this card was still up. Sigh.

I keep hoping for this VC to show up again but so far that hasn’t happened at all, which really sucks.

So now I’m looking at other Vision Cards that could be good alternatives to Dazzling Demoness. At the moment, I’m eying the following:

1. Flaring Aether Rain’s Miasma Meets Aether Vision Card

ATK/MAG +170

Another Regalia: Increase ATK and MAG by 80%

Power Entrusted: Increase LB damage by 100%

Strike Burning with Aether: Increase static ATK and MAG by 500

The last 3 effects can only be used or activated by a fire category unit.

2. Dark Rain’s Dark Rain Descends Vision Card

MAG +130

An Assailant Appears: Increase MAG by 80%

A Man Called “Emperor”: Increase LB damage by 100%

Another Rain: Increase static MAG by 500

The last 2 effects can only be used or activated by a mage unit.

3. Blade of Vengeance Ibara’s Wish-Granting Demon Vision Card

ATK/MAG +170

Hallowed Tree: Increase LB damage by 50%

Prayer Answered: Increase static ATK/MAG by 300

The True Demon: Increase chain modifier cap by 100%

Flaring Aether Rain, Dark Rain, and Blade of Vengeance Ibara are all “premium” chars which, among other things, means that their Vision Cards can only be obtained once they’re at Ex+ 3/3.

In contrast to that, you can get the Vision Cards of non-premium chars, like Genesis, once they’re at Ex+ 1/3. You’ll even get another copy after getting them to Ex+ 3/3.

Ahh, I wish Genesis was “premium” too if only so that he’ll have a great Vision Card as well. He could have had a really good Leader Skill too instead of just +100% stats to all Final Fantasy VII chars.

Anyway, as aforementioned, I still need 100 more fragments in order to get my 2/3 Flaring Aether Rain to 3/3. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get more copies of him while pulling for Genesis.

I have 1 copy of Dark Rain that’s at 1/3. Currently have 77 fragments for him so he’s a long way from being 3/3.

The state of my Blade of Vengeance Ibara is even worse. My copy of her is only at 0/3 and I only have 10 fragments for her. I’m debating whether to buy at least 40 of her fragments from the VIP Shop if only so I can get her to 1/3 and have access to her brave shift form.

But since she’s a premium char, her fragments will cost me a lot of VIP Coins. 5 of her fragments costs 300 VIP Coins. So even just buying 40 fragments will cost me 2400 VIP Coins.

In contrast to that, 5 of the fragments of non-premium chars will only cost 100 VIP Coins. So getting 50 of their fragments will only cost you a total of 1k VIP Coins.

Another reason why I’m reluctant to buy Ibara’s fragments is because I also want to buy Rain’s fragments. I’ll need 3k VIP Coins in order to get 50 of Rain’s fragments in the shop.

At the time I’m writing this part of this post, I only have 5525 VIP Coins. So if I try to get both Rain’s and Ibara’s fragments, I’ll basically be all out of VIP Coins.

I’m thinking it might be better to just skip Ibara’s fragments. Can’t really use her when she’s stuck at 1/3 anyway, and even getting 50 of her fragments won’t bring me closer to getting her to 2/3, much less 3/3.

I should just focus on getting Rain’s fragments since I’m kinda close to being able to 3/3 him already. But I’ll wait until after I pull on Genesis’s banner, just in case I get some more Rain dupes.

For now, will be equipping Genesis with his own Vision Card until I can get Flaring Aether Rain’s Miasma Meets Aether.

Genesis’s Vision Card is called The World Needs a New Hero. It has the following effects:

MAG +130

Battle Atop the Cannon: Boost MAG by 50%

Sephiroth’s Composure: Boost LB damage by 25%

The World Needs a New Hero: Boost MAG by 500 (only applies to FFVII units)

On a side note, ugh, what’s with the translation of this VC? No offense, but I hate it.

I looked up the Japanese version of this VC and its name is 俺も英雄になるんだ. According to Google Translate, the Romaji for that is “ore mo eiyuu ni narunda”, which translates to, “I too would like to be a hero”.

This is the exact same line that Genesis says in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII during that cut scene featuring him, Angeal Hewley, and Sephiroth. Here’s a video for reference:

I know that in the English version, he unfortunately says that blasted line instead, which really sucks.

I mean, “The world needs a new hero” is so different from “I too would like to be a hero”. Why’d they translate it like that? Needless to say, I prefer the Japanese version. I wish they had translated it accurately.

Anyway, I’ll talk more about that in another post, or we’ll be here all day. LOL. For now, let’s move on to the next line.

In the Japanese version of FFBE, Battle Atop the Cannon is called 砲塔上での戦い which translates to Battle on the Turret (according to Google Translate). So that sounds right enough. No problems with this one.

Sephiroth’s Composure is called セフィロスの余裕 which translates to Sephiroth’s Leeway (again, according to Google Translate).

Leeway means “the amount of freedom to move or act that is available” while composure means “the state or feeling of being calm and in control of oneself” (both according to Google).

So these 2 words are different too. But honestly though, what drew my attention when I first saw the English translation was the fact that Sephiroth was in the name when this isn’t even his Vision Card. Yeah, I know the animation for this Vision Card features him but still.

I actually thought the English version was just translating things their way again so was surprised when Sephiroth was also listed in the Japanese version.

Anyway, was also bothered by the last line because it was just a repetition of the title of the Vision Card. Like, seriously, why? And apparently, it’s like that in the Japanese version as well.

I looked up NV Legendary Hero Sephiroth’s Vision Card because this is one of the Final Fantasy VII Vision Cards that I have and, sure enough, all the names are different.

The Vision Card is called A Touching Reunion. The effects are called Tenacious Bond, Resurrecting Nightmare, and Experienced Swordsman.

You know, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 is featured in Sephiroth’s VC but his name doesn’t even show up in any of the text on said VC.

Ugh, just annoyed now because it feels like they didn’t even put much effort into this. I mean, come on, we have Vision Cards like Sephiroth’s and Flaring Aether Rain’s who have nice names and then we have Genesis’s Vision Card which is sadly meh. Sigh. Anyway, let’s just move on, or we’ll be here all day.

Weapons for Genesis Rhapsodos

Genesis’s STMR or Super Trust Master Reward is called Genesis’s Sword. This is a 2-handed sword which comes with +140 ATK and +234 MAG as well as +50% accuracy and 1.25-1.75x variance or damage modifier. It also has the following effects:

Scarlet SOLDIER’s blade: increase physical and magic damage against humans and machinas by 75%

Blade clad in magic: increase static MAG by 500 (this only applies to Genesis)

On a side note, again, what’s with these names? Ugh. “Genesis’s Sword”, really? They couldn’t even give it an actual name. Isn’t his sword called Rapier?

Sadly, the Japanese version is basically the same, calling this weapon ジェネシスの剣 which translates to Sword of Genesis.

But on the other hand, in the Japanese version “scarlet SOLDIER’s blade” is called 紅きソルジャーの細剣. Its Romaji is akaki sorujā no saiken, which translates to “crimson SOLDIER’s rapier”. So why couldn’t they have put rapier as the name of Genesis’s STMR?

In the Japanese version, “blade clad in magic” is 魔力を纏う剣の力 which translates to “the power of a magical sword”.

Note that this and all other translations are all from Google Translate unless stated otherwise so maybe it’s not entirely accurate but still. What’s with these crappy and uninspired lines and names?

Sorry, but I think FFRK did it better. It feels like Final Fantasy Record Keeper was more creative when it came to giving weapon names and such. Here’s an example from this post.

Anyway, Genesis’s Sword is good for him but it looks like the Dark Visions 2-handed Abyss Dark weapon sword is better.

The Dark Visions 2-handed sword is known as Dark Walküre and it comes with +202 ATK, +405 MAG, +50% accuracy, and 1.25-1.75x variance.

As soon as I was able to acquire this sword, I ran it in the Steel Castle Melfikya or Item World, wanting to get the best passives for Genesis.

Genesis wants a lot of MP, especially since I don’t have Dazzling Demoness, so I was trying to get the perfect MP roll for this sword. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done.

After what feels like hundreds of tries, the best I’ve managed to get so far is the following: +20% MP, +10% MP, and +5% MP.

The rates here really need to be higher. Seriously, it’s so bad. There is so much crap in the abilities pool.

Don’t want to give up though. Gonna keep trying and trying until I can get the perfect roll for Genesis’s sword.

Much, much later - after what feels like forever, I finally managed to get the perfect roll for the DV sword. That would be +20% MP, +15% MP, and +10% MP. Hell, yes! And freaking finally! Super pleased to see this.

Neo Vision Genesis Rhapsodos Banner Information

There are 2 banners that feature Genesis. The first one is the Genesis Step-Up Summon banner that has 6 steps and is limited to 1 per player.

Step 1 costs 3k lapis and will give you 11 units, 1 Summon Coin, and 1 NV Exchange Ticket

Step 2 costs 4k lapis and will give you 11 units, 1 Summon Coin, 1 NV Exchange Ticket, and 25 STMR Tickets

Step 3 costs 5k lapis and will give you 11 units, 1 Summon Coin, 1 NV Exchange Ticket, 25 STMR Tickets, and 100 VIP Coins

Step 4 costs 5k lapis and will give you 10 units, 1 guaranteed NV, 1 Summon Coin, 1 NV Exchange Ticket, and 1 Transcension Pearl

Step 5 costs 5k lapis and will give you 10 units, 1 guaranteed NV, 1 Summon Coin, 1 NV Exchange Ticket, and 200 VIP Coins

Step 6 costs 6k lapis and will give you 10 units, 1 guaranteed NV, 1 Summon Coin, 1 NV Exchange Ticket, and 1 Exchange Ticket (Original Armory III)

Step 4 has a 2% rate for Genesis. Step 5 has a 2.5% rate for Genesis. Step 6 has a 5% rate for Genesis.

You can exchange 10 NV Exchange Tickets for 1 copy of NV Genesis. You can exchange 1 Exchange Ticket (Original Armory III) for 1 global original equipment that’s featured in the Original Armory III shop. You can exchange Summon Coins for various items, including fragments for Genesis, in the Exchange Shop (Genesis).

The second banner that features Genesis is called the Genesis NV Premium Step-Up Summon banner. This one has 4 steps and is limited to 7 per player.

Step 1 costs 1k lapis and will give you 4 units

Step 2 costs 3k lapis and will give you 8 units, 1 Summon Coin, and 1 NV Exchange Ticket

Step 3 costs 5k lapis and will give you 11 units, 1 Summon Coin, and 1 NV Exchange Ticket

Step 4 is free and will give you 6 units

Neo Vision Information and Fragments for Genesis Rhapsodos

Once you have 1 copy of a Neo Vision char or unit, you need 50 fragments or shards to get them to Ex+ 1/3. Then you need 100 fragments to get them to Ex+ 2/3. After that, you need 200 fragments to fully max them out to Ex+ 3/3.

One copy of a NV char can be converted to 50 of said char’s fragments.

So in order to get Genesis to NV Ex+ 3/3, I need at least 8 copies of him.

As part of the CCFF7R Epic Poet Login Bonus, we will get up to 30 of Genesis’s fragments just by logging on to the game daily for the duration of the campaign period. Day 1, day 4, and day 6 will give 10 Genesis fragments each for a total of 30 Genesis fragments.

After Genesis’s banner ends, 50 of his fragments will be available in the Fragment Shops under the VIP Shop (Unit Fragments/Brave Insignia) for 1k VIP Coins.

In the Fragment Shops, under the Lapis Exchange Shop, 30 of Genesis’s fragments will also be available for 3300 lapis.

There is also a bundle called Genesis Fragment Bundle that costs 5k lapis. This one contains 50 of Genesis’s fragments as well as 900 Trust Coins.

The Exchange Shop (Genesis) contains various items including 50 Genesis fragments. You need 5 Summon Coins to get all of these fragments.

And, as aforementioned, you can exchange 10 NV Exchange Tickets for 1 copy of NV Genesis. The NV Ticket Exchange Shop (Genesis) contains 2 copies of Genesis. So you need a total of 20 NV Exchange Tickets to get both copies of Genesis in the shop.

My goal is to get Genesis to Ex+ 3/3 on day 1 a.k.a the day that I pull on his banner so I’m just gonna ignore the fragments that I can’t get right away.

The fragments and/or copies of Genesis that I can access right away are as follows:

The 2 copies of Genesis in the NV Ticket Exchange Shop (Genesis) for 20 NV Exchange Tickets

50 Genesis fragments in the Exchange Shop (Genesis) for 5 Summon Coins

10 Genesis fragments from the Epic Poet Login Bonus campaign

Hmm. Okay, for now, I’ll just pull on the Genesis banner first and see how it goes.

For Genesis, I’m willing to go all the way to the pity. Heck, I’ll pity him twice if I have to and spend even more if necessary though of course, I’m hoping that things won’t turn out to be that bad.

I’ve been saving my lapis ever since I heard that Genesis had finally showed up in the Japanese version of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. IIRC, the only time that I used my lapis to pull was when NV Flaring Aether Rain came, and that was only because I wanted access to his Leader Skill for Genesis.

I do readily use any and all tickets that I get basically as soon as I get them but it’s really rare to get anything good or useful from these.

It really sucks how bloated the unit pool in this game is already. There’s so much crap that it feels like it will take a miracle before you can get something good and useful from these pulls.

Anyway, I’m really hoping that I’ll be able to get a lot of copies of Genesis right away and without having to spend so much. Also hoping to be able to get some NVs that I don’t have yet or that I don’t have fully maxed out yet.

But considering how the results of my Flaring Aether Rain pulls were mostly crappy, I’m already bracing myself for something similar to happen on my Genesis banner pulls.

Genesis Step-Up Summon Banner Pulls Results

Currently, have 183,970 lapis on hand. Here are the results of my pulls on the Genesis Step-Up Summon banner:

Will only list any NV that I get since 5-stars and below aren’t really worth talking about. Heck, even some of the NVs aren’t worth talking about either. There are a lot of Neo Visions that are really old and outdated by now.

Step 1 - no NV. Meh.

Step 2 - no NV either. Ugh. Rate-up is a lie.

Step 3 - no NV again. Wow, eff this game.

Step 4 - finally, a NV crystal shows up. Please be my first copy of Genesis already, please.

No Genesis. But I did get 2 NVs. One was my first copy of Neo Vision Lion from Final Fantasy XI and the second was a dupe of Neo Vision Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII.

Don’t know anything about Lion. IIRC, she only recently showed up in the game so she’s not that outdated maybe.

As for Cloud Strife - he’s one of the more recent “premium” chars in FFBE. He’s also pretty good so glad that I was able to get a dupe of him. Right now, I have 1 copy of him that’s at 1/3.

Been running him in the Fragment Dungeon so I currently have 32 fragments for him. This dupe that I just got gives me 50 more so I’m now closer to being able to get him to 2/3.

Step 5 - dupe NV Fina -The Return-. Ugh, so much for that so-called 2.5% featured rate for the NV unit. Sigh. Well, at least this is like the last dupe of Fina that I need in order to get my 2/3 copy to 3/3.

Step 6 - argh! Eff this game. Only got dupe Roca who I already have at 3/3. Damn it.

Genesis NV Premium Step-Up Summon Banner Pulls Results

Not a single NV showed up in my second lap on this banner. Eff this banner and this game. Rate-up is a lie. Damn it. I really hate this. Didn’t think it would be this bad. But this is really terrible. Absolutely terrible.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion Banner Pulls Results

This banner also has Genesis on rate up. It costs 5k lapis for 11 summons. Decided to try my luck here since the other banner is clearly cursed. I tried the single summon for 250 lapis too but that one didn’t even give me a 5-star.

Now down to 128, 720 lapis on hand. Here are the results of my pulls on this banner:

Did 4 multi-draws and yet not a single NV showed up. WTF? What is going on here? How is this freaking fair? Eff this game. So mad. Don’t even know what to say anymore. Damn it. Damn this.

Genesis Banner Exchange Shop

Went to the Exchange Shop for the Genesis banners. By now I have 20 Summon Coins. Exchanged 5 Coins to get 50 of Genesis’s fragments.

Then I went to the Exchange Shop where I can exchange up to 2 copies of Genesis. Each copy costs 10 NV Exchange Tickets. By now I have 20 of those tickets.

Proceeded to exchange all of my tickets for the 2 copies of NV Genesis.

Now I have 2 copies of Genesis plus 60 of his fragments (50 from the shop and 10 from logging in).

I have him now but - don’t really feel happy. Still feel so frustrated and angry. My pulls on these banners were so bad. I have no words right now. Just - argh! Insert multiple curse words here because argh! Eff this game! Eff this banner! Eff these cursed rates!

Also WTF? How come there are only 2 copies of Genesis in the NV Exchange Shop? Why aren’t there more? What if I want more copies of him?

I want to get him to Ex+ 3/3 and now I’m wondering how I’m gonna be able to do that. I thought that I’d be able to get at least 1 or more copies of him from pulling on his banner. But couldn’t even get more than a couple of NVs from these pulls.

Ugh. Thinking about how crappy the results of my draws were just pisses me off. Really wish that things had turned out differently. Why’d things have to happen this way? Couldn’t even get at least 1 dupe of Rain to get him to 3/3. Sigh.

Anyway, let’s see. So right now, with what I have, I can get Genesis to 1/3 then I’ll have 1 dupe + 10 fragments, which is basically equivalent to 60 fragments.

If I buy the Genesis Fragment Bundle now for 5k lapis, I’ll get 50 fragments which, combined with the 60 fragments I already have, is more than enough to get him to 2/3 already.

I’ll have 10 leftover fragments if I do that. Then I’ll need 190 more fragments in order to get him to 3/3. I can get 30 more of Genesis’s fragments from the Lapis Exchange Shop for 3300 lapis.

If I wait a few more days, then I can get 20 more fragments from the login campaign thing. If I wait even more, 50 of Genesis’s fragments will eventually be available in the VIP Shop.

So that’s 30 fragments from the Lapis Exchange Shop + 10 leftover fragments + 20 from the login rewards + 50 from the VIP Shop = 110 fragments. Ugh. That means I’ll still need 90 more fragments even after all of that.

Argh! This can’t be. I just want to 3/3 Genesis, damn it. I need to pull copies of him.

I still have lapis but - ugh, pulling feels like a waste since I keep getting trash and I can’t pity him anymore because there are no more copies of him in the NV Exchange Shop so even if I keep on gettng those NV Exchange Tickets, they’ll just be useless now.

But if I want more copies of Genesis, I have no choice but to pull. There’s no guarantee anymore though. Now I can only hope that these banners will stop being so awful.

Please, can I get something good now, please? How could things be this bad? Damn it.

Okay, for now, I went to level up one of my copies of Genesis. Gave him all the stat boosts and maxed out everything that can be maxed. Then I went ahead and got him to Ex+ 1/3 already.

Decided to pull again first before buying the rest of Genesis’s fragments that I can buy. Fingers crossed that things will be better this time. Please.

Step 1 - LOL, of course, there’s no NV again because eff this game.

Step 2 - NV? What NV? This banner really is cursed, isn’t it?

Step 3 - oh, look, a NV actually showed up. Surprise, surprise. Watch this be trash so it might as well not be a NV. To my surprise though, the Neo Vision that I just got turned out to be -

Genesis! Hell, yes! And freaking finally. I can’t believe he only showed up now. Rate up really is a lie, huh? I mean, come on, isn’t he supposed to be on rate up?

I’ve basically pitied him twice by now and am practically on my way to pitying him for the third time (not that it’s possible to do so even if I want to) and yet this is only the first time that I ever got a copy of him. Seriously? Sigh. Well, at least I got another dupe of him.

Step 4 - and we’re back to 0 NVs. Is there actually something wrong with this banner or what?

Anyway, before continuing to pull a.k.a waste my lapis and be even more disappointed and mad than I already am, I thought I’d better reassess the situation again.

Let’s see. My Genesis is now at Ex+ 1/3. I now have 2 dupes of him which is equivalent to 100 fragments so he’s basically 2/3 now. Then I have 10 more of his fragments.

If I buy all the currently available Genesis fragments with lapis, I’ll have a total of 90 fragments for him. I still need like 2, preferably 3 more copies of him, so I can get him to 3/3 now.

Okay, I guess I have to keep on pulling. Before that though, let me just buy the 50 Genesis Fragment Bundle for 5k lapis already. For now, I’ll hold off on getting the 30 fragments since that won’t get me anywhere right now anyway.

After buying the bundle, I turned one of my Genesis dupes into 50 fragments then awakened my 1/3 Genesis to 2/3.

Now it’s time to keep on pulling. Hopefully, I can get more dupes of Genesis as well as more NVs. Please. This time, can I actually get something good instead of crap and more crap?

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion Banner Pulls Results

Went back to this banner because I can’t pull on the Genesis NV Premium Step-Up Summon banner anymore. Now down to 68,520 lapis. Here are the results of my pulls on this banner:

1 - no NV again. What else is new?

2 - what a waste of lapis.

3 - hate this game and this banner.

4 - ugh, can’t I get even just one good NV, please?

6 - can’t even get a single NV from one of these pulls. Eff this game.

8 - finally, a NV shows up. Just got Determined Dagger a.k.a Garnet Til Alexandros XVII from Final Fantasy IX.

At least she’s new and at least I finally got a NV after all this time but - argh! Please, just give me more Genesis dupes. Isn’t he supposed to be on rate up on this banner? Where the eff is he?

Wow, I really freaking hate this game right now. Down to 4,960 lapis so can’t pull anymore even if I want to. It really sucks that I barely got any NVs. Damn it.

Shouldn’t have bothered pulling on this banner anymore since not even a single copy of Genesis showed up. Basically just wasted 60k+ lapis. I regret that now since not only did I not get even a single copy of Genesis, the only other NV that I got was Garnet.

If I’d gotten more NVs, this wouldn’t have been so bad. As it is, this just felt like a complete and utter waste of lapis. Maybe I would have been better off just pulling on some other banner instead.

Heck, Flaring Aether Rain’s banner is still up. Maybe I could have pulled there to try and get 1 more copy of him so that I can 3/3 him already and equip his Vision Card to Genesis.

In retrospect, I should have stopped pulling right after I got my first copy of Genesis from one of his banners. If I’d done that, I would still have some lapis left instead of being basically down to 0 now. I now regret continuing to pull.

Like I said, if I’d gotten more NVs and if I’d gotten more copies of Genesis, then I wouldn’t have minded spending this much. But as it is, right now, just filled with so much frustration and anger and sadness. How could this happen? Why’d this happen? Sigh.

Got 17 more of those NV Exchange Tickets. If there were more copies of Genesis in the shop, I could have pitied him for the third time and then be on my way to pitying him for the fourth time.

Used all the tickets that I had on hand too but still no dice. I just wanted to be able to get Genesis to 3/3 on the day that I pull for him. Didn’t think that would be so impossible. He’s not even “premium”. And yet here we are.

Only ever got 1 copy of him from one of his banners. Eff this game. Wasn’t planning to run him in the Fragment Dungeon but looks like I’m gonna have to do that.

Also went ahead and bought all 30 of Genesis’s fragments for 3300 lapis. Down to 1660 lapis now.

But since I’m clearly not getting any more dupes of Genesis, gonna need all the fragments that I can get my hands on. Now I also need to wait for the rest of the login fragments plus the ones from the VIP Shop.

In short, there’s no way that I can get him to 3/3 now or anytime soon because eff this game. Sigh. So freaking sad and depressed right now :-(.

This is so difficult but I'll have to say it's a tie between Eda & Darius

Tibbles, other vile chars (Odalia, Kikimora, Terra, Adrian) are at least fun to hate, have good designs, and contribute to good char analyses on why they're like that & the harm their abuses caused. Tibbles is just...a capitalist pig, which is a great pun but he's still boring

3. 5 favorite ships (canon or non-canon):

Raeda, Lumity, Huntlow, Gustholomule, Dariraeda. Or every char x therapy

4. Character I find most attractive:

Darius, Raine, Eda, Camila, & Steve all take turns bearing the title of "most fuckable person in the grocery store". Lilith isn't qualified solely out of respect

5. Character I would marry:

I feel like Camila would be the best choice haha

I would've loved to have Luz as a friend in HS

7. A random thought:

A headcanon I have is that Eberwolf's a polyphyodont (his teeth continually replace themselves) like a shark. This horrified Darius at first

*sighs* Huntlow is a perfectly cute ship that's still important representation regardless if either char is queer or not, and if it ended up canon it would not ruin the queerness of the show nor would it be "horrible rushed writing". There are clear hints for a romantic angle plus it's been directly paralleled to both Lumity & Caleb/Wittewife, and after everything the show has been through & did for queer rep it's fucking nuts people are this mad over something minor. No one has to like x pairing but it's honestly depressing to see these complaints so often.

Also m/f does not automatically mean "allocishet" nor is it inherently bad, signed a queer person in a straight passing relationship

9. My canon OTP:

Lumity & Raeda are so fucking incredible and both mean so much to me, sometimes I can't believe they're canon

10. My non-canon OTP:

There's a lot of ship questions huh. So here I'll put "Darius Eber Hunter & Flapjack all live together & it's sweet chaos" because I have put a lot of HCs, writing, and energy into thinking about them

11. Most badass character:

Steve convinced a god to not care about godhood during his journey of leaving "faceless minor character status" via quietly quitting a cult. Goals

12. Most epic villain:

Belos is really the only choice, but even further Belos is probably one of the top villains in western animation, guy is unstable yet iconic

13. Pairing I am not a fan of:

Bosh//low & gold//ric were unavoidable for years (2yrs for bw 1yr for eh) it was awful

14. Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another):

I don't wanna say "screwed up" bc despite any gripes I have I love almost every character, but I think Lilith got shafted esp with how prevalent she was at the beginning of S2 before leaving. I know why storylines had to be dropped but I think Lilith suffered a lot more from it than others

15. Favorite friendship:

Gus & Hunter, I had no idea what to expect going into LR and I adore every moment of it & everything that's come since

Amity & Eda are both extremely relatable

1. How I feel about this character:

I'm an outlier in that I always loved Lilith, even after S1 first ended and so much of the fandom hated her (for good reason tho). Her friendship with Hooty means so much to me and was so funny to see start

2. Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character:

3. My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character:

The tragedy of her relationship with Eda is just. Ah. It kills. Lifelong damage that she can't ever take back from a moment of weakness caused by the world Belos made, but she was able to lessen the load of it and through that finally starts to really understand & sympathize with her sister and work to rebuild their relationship after decades

4. My unpopular opinion about this character:

I don't think it was bad writing that Luz so easily forgave Lilith at the start of S2, that fits Luz's character so much to think of transgressions against herself so lightly and focus more on the ones against Eda -- but since Eda also easily forgave Lilith bc that also fits her character so much, Luz would follow Eda's lead there. That said I'm gonna write a fic about the hard apology Lilith gave Luz offscreen

5. One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon:

Apologies to Luz, King, & Eda, the heart-to-heart with Gwen & Dell, the confrontation with Raine about cursing Eda

6. Favorite friendship for this character:

I think so much about how Lilith befriending Hooty is what made everyone else finally start treating Hooty with any respect or kindness

It's risky, but honestly I just wish Iizuka or Sonic Team just bluntly said Heroes is SA3, Shadow SA4, 06 SA5, and Unleashed SA6

Because in the past few years they have PR and Sonic Channel artists appeasing Adventure fans much the same way Classic Sonic was misrepresented and whored out

And I hate that

"Bu-but, SA3 needs-"

No shut up! 90% of fans don't know what they want. And seeing people act like SA1s physics are better than 2s just cuz you can slope jump (something literally most 3D Sonic's can do, but no one wants to learn or observe) is asinine. The word momentum has become a massive empty buzzword, and fan attempts of that are just broken SA1 Tailsesque flying over everything by simply willing it. Same with story, no one actually has ideas, and Shadow is disastrously stuck in a hell hole of "muh Maria", despite good rep like 06 Shadow existing

"But, muh title"

This is the same franchise that called its 4th home console game Sonic 3, get over it. I'd rather Sonic games have unique titles, not Sonic #56

Even modding communities are hung up on this bias. Know what 90% of stage mods for other Sonic games are initially? Just SA1, SRB2, or Mario 64 levels

That's depressing. And then people that actually do original stage mods are ignored, or require years and years of rep

Even the direct games are biased. I have a friend that did a great Radical Highway port for Sonic Heroes (sadly goes back to my previous point), had to redo vertex lighting, even ported SA2 char models and anims to go along with it. Barely got reception

He later did a Sonic R char model in SA2 mod. Was top downloaded for Sonic mods within that week

It's disgusting, he himself felt like that was unfair to his higher quality and invested Heroes mod, and I have to point this out, Heroes (and Shadow technically) could've had character and level mods as early as 2004! Yet no one touched it beyond brief tests till 2017. And even now, not much happened

SA2 no one could mod models until 2019. And that exploded

So grow up! All you're doing is repeating what classic elitists have done for decades. Accept that Heroes is SA3, like how Adventure is Sonic 5 or 6, whatever!

You barely understand these characters. Just look at gushing love for Mania, Movie, and Flynn Sonic. Just 1 or 2, so on nauseating refs appeases you suckers, regardless of many issues these characters have to source canon, or even outside source canon

Even Anniversary books got horrifically biased. Why does 1-3K have a lot of concept art, then SA1 and 2, but then Heroes on it dries up drastically? And we know there's a lot of concepts for later games, PR uploaded some of Heroes last year!

Sonic Team needs to man up. Frontiers still is trying to appease with Flynn's involvement, and if he gets his way, we'll lose our character harder than "Baldy McNosehair". Sonic history has become shamed into freaking 3-6 games! It's disgusting

1. gangpol und mit - the hopelessly sad story of the hideous end of the world (bitpop / glitch pop)

thanks baxter for making me aware of this one. very very charming and catchy and unique!! love the cute quirky bleeps n bloops and robovocals contrasted with the kinda dark story. very surreal katamari-esque vibe to me. not always in the mood to listen to this one but i've been replaying it a lot lately. (...i wish i could find a copy of this album art that isn't JPEG'd to hell, but regardless.) favorite song: the only sure thing about luck is that it will change

2. radiation 4 - wonderland (mathcore / avant-garde metal)

found this one a bit ago from doing one of the "5 obscure bands" hyhtb posts. not really doing anything that other mathcore bands haven't, but still has found a special place in my heart. i just can't help but love obscure myspace-era bands with little/no high-quality footage. and they dressed in labcoats onstage! - how can you not love that!!!!!!! one of the few Very Loud And Screamy albums that i am somehow always in the mood for despite generally not liking that sound (along with tub ring - zoo hypothesis). favorite song: love through tapeworm hooks

3. humming urban stereo - very very nice! and short cake (lounge)

found through one of tumblr user kitschke's daily reviews. her thoughts ended up being about the same as mine - it's nice lounge with some eccentric sounds/samples. except i'm not as put off about scully doesn't know being on the album 3 times because that's my favorite song on it :p not much to say, i just like it! relaxing favorite song: scully doesn't know (korean version)

4. general patton vs. the x-ecutioners self-titled (experimental hip-hop)

wait, this album isn't called joint special operations task force? shit ive had it tagged wrong this entire time. anyway, i've been revisiting this one lately... not a hiphop buff so im not sure how to describe it but i love the glitchy scratchy parts and loads of sample usage and the little shining parts of Actual Song (we'll paint this town / wake me up in heaven / fire in the hole / etc) to grasp onto before it goes right back to being a mess of samples and glitchiness. basically the spasmodic nature of fantomas except its hiphop. whats not to love favorite song: "we'll paint this town" -- throat and phonograph fire support coordination measures (TPFSCM)

5. portishead - dummy (trip hop)

listened to as part of an album exchange thingy in char's server (thanks eve!). i looove the atmosphere, so much that i dont mind that the album as a whole feels kinda samey to me? its got this kinda dark and gloomy feel to it but its also so dreamy and vibey and... yeah! beats are good vocals are great. just let it wash over u favorite song: sour times

6. high castle teleorkestra - the egg that never opened (avant-prog)

obviously not a recent discovery, but i'm never Not listening to it. in case you somehow have been following me without knowing what this band is, it shares 3 members with estradasphere and is one of the best things ive ever damn heard (EXTREMELY biased). i'll try not to gush about it too much here but its so complex and beautiful and simultaneously retro and innovative and i love the scifi themes and yeah!!!!!!!!! HCT SECOND ALBUM PLEASE I NEED IT. favorite song: the days of blue jeans were gone

My Top 10

This list is incredibly biased by my childhood preferences and how sentimental these things are to me. I don’t want anyone to think that I am an overgrown child. I hold things that have a sentimental value to me at a higher regard than what’s “objectively” better. Production quality, budget, date of release are things that never matter when you make something that means something to someone.

However this list is not ordered in terms of what’s my favorite because I can never pick one favorite media out of everything that’s out there.

Number 10 - Tamako Love Story

This is one of my favorite animes I watched during quarantine. I was always drawn to love stories. This movie is beautifully animated and has a very nice story and conclusion to the story introduced in the show that came before Tamako Market.

Number 9 - The Breakfast Club

I really love this movie even though it does have it’s questionable parts, some jokes that wouldn’t be considered okay today. Regardless this movie really does mean something to me because it was one of the movies I watched before I moved to the US that introduced me to how high school was going to be. Of course that was not the case for me at all but it did help me dream and hope for a better school experience than the one I had in Turkey.

Number 8 - Jujutsu Kaisen

This anime is also one of my favorites because i watched it during quarantine. But it means more to me because I was in an online community that talked about the show every week a new episode came out. I would be waiting for a new episode to air so I could go online and talk about it. I made a lot of friends that way, people my age, and I really liked hearing other people’s opinions. It made the show more meaningful and real to me.

Number 7 - Carry On

This is one of my favorite books. I loved reading it, it was tense, full of lore, and had great characters and one of the best and worst endings I’ve ever seen. I think it’s one of the only books I finished in one sitting. It was 530 pages long.

Again this is one of the movies that I watched and believed the US to be like. I idolized this movie, thinking the exact same thing would happen to me. It didn’t but watching this movie always makes me feel better, no matter how much I’ve memorized it up until now. I also love the actors in it, Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Julia Stiles.

Number 5 - Markiplier

Unlike the other things on this list, Markiplier is a real person, who’s my favorite Youtuber ever. I watched him alongside Jacksepticeye when I was small, from age 9 and so on. I never stopped watching him, even after seeing how he changed throughout the last 9 years, I still enjoy his content a lot. And if I ever do stop watching him, I will have so much respect for him for being such a great person and content creator.

Number 4 - Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

This movie is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. The animation is incredible, after watching videos about the process of making this movie I was so impressed. The artstyle and the color palette makes it so fun to watch. The voice acting is so good. Not to mention I have always been a Spider-Man fan, more specifically Miles Morales fan after having read the book about him.

Number 3 - Persona 5

Persona 5 is a Japanese RPG game that is about a group of Japanese high schoolers who fight demons at night. It’s very anime-like. The game itself takes about 100 hours to complete. It took a very very long time to come out, because of Atlus’ perfectionism. Because it had mature themes I couldn’t play it when I wanted to, in seventh grade. Therefore I watched a youtube playthrough. That whole year I would watch it whenever I could. I loved the characters and the story. And I loved going online and seeing art that was made by fans about the game.

Number 2 - Life Is Strange

Life Is Strange is my favorite game of all time. If I wasn’t so sentimental about it, it wouldn’t even be on this list. This game came out a day before my 10th birthday. I begged my parents to let me buy it after seeing the trailer. And I played the first part of the game a million times. The art style, music, voice acting, and the heart of this game is so amazing. Especially the music and the visuals, it’s basically a visual dessert. It has gotten its criticisms over the years and I understand and agree with them completely but it still makes me so so happy that I can never imagine ever forgetting it.

Number 1 - 6Teen

6teen is number one on this list because unlike everything else on here, I have been actively watching this show in the last few weeks. It helped a lot as background noise when I did homework but still is so fun to watch. I first watched this show in my junior year and I have loved and rewtached it so many times since then. The show has so much heart and has such realistic characters that it’s scary. It makes me sad now how I never experienced being sixteen the same way they did but at least watching the show helped me feel that.

now i'm curious what about junpei? (Aside form the sexist shiz with the FeMC 'cause like, that's pretty self explanatory)

Tbf, most my issues arose by playing the male side (which does carry over to the female side, the EXTRA sexist stuff on the female side is just sprinkles on his character). I'm gonna have to give this post the same treatment as Yukari and just....give a gloss over of my issues (mostly from my first time around, and then a small retread I did a few years ago).

As I said before Yukari and Junpei are the ones that made me quit P3 the first time around. Mostly because....they aren't good people and I wasn't having fun with them. ("What about the side chars" They weren't bad I just wasn't invested, and in part it was because I needed to know more about....you know my current team, but the game wasn't letting me.....which was frustrating...cause I'm like "if I could just SL maybe I could see a GOOD side of them".....haha nope.)

People will say Yukari and Junpei are "well written characters" with "flaws" that are "realistic." Yeah.......but they aren't really good people. And they aren't great friends.

"Oh who cares?" You may say. "They're still good characters!" And I would say.....that's subjective. I think they are well written outside the context of P3, and a bit within the context. But if the point is for me to root for them, feel like I AND the MC are suppose to have an everlasting bond of friendship with.....then it falls flat. THAT isn't well written at all.

No a Social Link does not fix things outright. Take Junpei (I mean this is his post haha), he has an SL with the FeMC. Now, with the FeMC......I do enjoy BOTH of Junpei/Yukari's SLs. There are a few good moments. Recall them? Haha they aren't that iconic. I just know every time I go through it-it's not 100% hatred (or like pregnant women do, forget after they experience is over....maybe my psyche is just trying to protect me u_u or maybe I'm just....not THAT engaged in P3's SLs that aren't Rio/Saori and a handful of other's....I still get Fuuka's confused and block out half of Mitsuru and I like those chars!).

Anyway, back to the rant. Regardless if I do have some good fun times with them in the SL......the main story is still an issue. Now it's not that FeMC ruins it ("Oh Silly! Heaven forbid she ruin anything in your eyes!" u////u Oh you know me so well! but I'm not just blindly defending her in this case), but it's that it's a double edged sword. On the Male's side....I can't buy him and Junpei as friends. It's all tell not show with them. But on the FeMC's side? I can buy it....BUT now we have an issue of him acting THE EXACT SAME (with an added dose of *~sexism~*). Which isn't kosher. Neither side is.

Where one lacks, the other picks up the slack. One side fixes something, but then there's a new issue. Now tbf, FeMC side does have these things called "roadblocks" (that happen in the middle of the link), which I hope later games adapt (esp since it'll help with "story 2nd tier awakenings" like in P3), but they aren't prefect in P3P (they work well for Ken/Aki tho!), Junpei/Yukari's? Liiiiiiiittle funky. I'm in the middle of verifying Yukari's again (it's early game, after rank 2 you are blocked into rank 3), Junpei....I think is timed rather than rank restricted (aka, you can max him as soon as you want as long as it's before Chidori shows up....once she shows up, you gotta wait).

Ok ok, I know I said I would probably focus on Male side more than Female, and now I'm going off on a tangent with technical mechanics of the game (please be kind to my sleep deprivation lkfdasjflkj;a, I just finished another 5 hour drive back, little sleep, it's 6 am as of typing most of this, and I'm not sleeping and just gonna roll up to work like I am).....but it's something worth noting because....not much changes between the Male and Female sides, and by talking about this....we show that there would still be issues for the Male even if he got an SL with Junpei. Such as....if we max him ASAP.....and the implications of that.

A lot of people have issues with P4/5's SLs/CoOp (fuck the word CoOp, they're all called SLs from here on out), mainly that a "big part of a characters arc is in the SL and not in the main story" yadda yadda. I agree, it does stink that if you max Yosuke, it'll take awhile in the story for him to reach the same beats of maturity he showcases if you speed max his SL (probs not the devs intentions for you to speed max them....but again...roadblocks are our friends here game!). But at least it's memorable, again, I have issues with recalling a lot of P3's SLs (mostly my teammates than the NPCs) because they're just kinda there. It'd be better if we could get a good happy medium between P3 and P4's way of doing SLs (P5? oh no, we're talking about separate characters when you talk about P5... >.> we don't want to emulate P5). BUT here's the thing......the issue with say...Yosuke.....it's now Junpei's issue.

You can speed max Junpei and now "Mr. I'm your best friend with an unbreakable bond" gets all huffy with the FeMC????

"But I like that he doesn't lick the MC's boots like Yosuke/Ryu does!" But he's actually her friend????? How would you feel if your friend kept playing hot and cold with you for a whole fucking year???? Acting like it's your fault for their own insecurities???? That doesn't add up? You'd def be like "What the hell man???" You def wouldn't feel like you had an "unbreakable bond" you'd feel like a punching bag.

That's just on the FeMC side, the one where we see the friendship actually develop (if we removed the SL, then we remove her one issue, but gain the Male's issue instead, like I said above, it's a double edge sword.....). Now let's talk about the other edge and look at the Male (aka my original perspective). You don't SL with Junpei. All your interactions are mostly in the story mode, anything with talking to his idle char is optional ("But you should always talk to your teammates in the dorm!" why? Not everyone is going to do it, it's optional for a reason. And there will be days you miss them, or don't see them around town. But sure, it's MY fault for missing a key part of scribbly bibbly's character development in an optional dialogue because they were hiding in the back alley of Port Island station (a place the player will rarely go)/or in a diff spot from the ACTUAL SL you are trying to SL, on a specific day >_> Or you forget to talk to them because you THOUGHT you talked to them after talking to everyone at the dorm)....

BUT I DIGRESS! Again, YOU the player, only interact with Junpei in the main story, the MC will talk with him off screen or we see a silent convo happening in front of us (PS2 ver only, thanks to seeing the models) before a plot point cutscene starts. Sure we get some bonding scenes, like the beach....and the hot spring.....but.....that's really it. We get forced along with it, and we can easily disagree with him. All if this is shown to us, but the game tries to tell us something different. But unlike the FeMC, it's got nothing to back it's claims up!

So when the game is like "yeah who thought I'd be friends with you!" I'm sitting there like "Haha no we're not friends, we've never been friends, fuck you."

So on the FeMC side, we have "Guy who is are friend, acts like an ass, constantly apologizes for acting like an ass even tho it HURTS US, but we forgive him because???? He's our friend????" Sounds toxic.

On the Male side we have "Guy who isn't really our friend, acts like an ass, constantly apologizes for being an ass even tho it HURTS US, but we forgive him because????? The game says so? Then tries to claim we are friends even tho we've never hung out???? What???"

None of it makes any logical sense.

"But I still like that he doesn't kiss up to the MC." And??? He's still not our friend. Friends can disagree, yes. But Junpei isn't disagreeing with us. He's having insecurity issues all on his damn own, and decides to take it out on us. That's not disagreeing, that's needing therapy but instead of going to it you act like a bully to the person you are jealous of.

Disagreeing is choosing an option that isn't "Yeah let's rush in like a brain dead idiot" like on the Priestess train fight (even then he rushes ahead EVEN IF YOU AGREE WITH HIM!) Plus, P4 did an actual better job with the disagreeing thing. P4, if you don't make the right answers (no bearing on the plot) everyone will just....figure it out without you. But when times actually got tough with Nanako, Yosuke disagreed with the MC. Hell, you had to convince that side of the team to not do what they were about to do. What's great is you kinda want to side with Yosuke. And it's an actual disagreement! And you understand why! And the apology is sincere! P4's not perfect but gd does it have it's high moments and this is one of them! "What about Ryuji" I have issues, but you don't always agree. He does things, you can call him out on it (you can also be unfairly mean to him??? same with Anne and Yusuke??? but that's a diff matter). Nothing happens tho, but at least you don't have Ryuji just bullying you because of his own issues.

It feels like what everyone has in mind with this whole not getting along thing and what actually happens is a big ass disconnect.

Junpei, like Yukari, is selfish. "Oh but he gets better!" No. Mf does not get better. He blows up/gets pissy at you at least 3 times in the game. One being as late end game because he found out he's going to die.

"Oh but he found out he's going to die!" Yeah well we're all going to die. But, he once again, chooses to channel it at the MC. It shows he still didn't get over his insecurities. "But he's scared!" But isn't it odd he always takes it out on the MC? MC is just there, s/he's a victim too. There are better people to blame, hell this could've been a time he gave EVERYONE equal opportunity blame. NOT just MC (thus showing it's not just his inferiority complex taking over). He could've blamed Mitsuru for her family creating Death. He could've blamed Yukari's for her father having a hand in creating Death. He could've blamed Aigis for sealing it in the MC. He could've blamed Ikutsuki for dragging the MC to Port Island. And then he could've blamed the MC for being so oblivious about what they were carrying.

But no, once again....All MC's fault.

Junpei is just a selfish bully, who takes out his insecurities onto others that he's jealous of. (wait you might be able to say the same about Yukari in relation to Mitsuru, didn't she say she was jealous of Mittsy for having her dad still? jsaldfja jk jk, I'm gonna keep an eye out for this tho on my next playthrough, this is just a theory)

"Ok but how does this relate to the Answer or your last playthrough?" Oh yes yes, my 'last playthrough' (aka a few years ago when I did it with college friends, and even tho I hated Yukari/Junpei I did try to "defend them"....as best I could.....I kept my mouth shut on my own opinion and played devils advocate for them, hmmm yeah no one cared they didn't like them still). I realized while replaying at the time that....Junpei is wishy washy. "Oh but he develops!" Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaah not really. Not even in he Answer! I still found him wishy washy. I think they were going for "mature voice of reason," but instead we got "wishy washy devils advocate." Gonna need to replay that again. This was just a recent playthrough I found this way of looking at him. I'mma give him another chance tho.

Oh and another thing I hated was his relationship with Chidori. She deserves better. He really didn't improve that much by being around her (take the hot spring scene for example, that I could probably go into detail on). And it was something I found to be wishy washy about his character.

And you should totally be allowed to date Junpei. I wouldn't but it should be doable! "But he likes Chidori!" Yeah but he has a crush on Fuuka and mf thinks he has any right to voicing anything about my relationship with her on the male route so *starts throwing hands*. "There will probs need to be new scenes with new rewrites if you make those choices that lead down that route." Yes do it. Let me fuck it all the way up. And yes, that Fuuka scene predates the FeMC.

*cough* Anyway, in summary. I think Junpei is a very selfish person, and not a very good friend. And it feels like he constantly gets away with things. He may be a butt monkey at times, but his retaliation for it doesn't seem like it's ever aimed at the right people, instead its usually aimed at the innocent bystander who is just existing (aka the MC). Despite this, we're suppose to think they are the bestest friends and it's the most ideal friendship eva~! And none of that sits right with me.

It doesn't help that I view SEES friendship as a whole on the weaker side. Something that isn't just my subjective view point, but is LITERALLY a B plot point on the P3 side of PQ1! Regardless, I find their bonding very.....lacking (with FeMC barley having some glue to hold the idea of them being friends and having a bond together, even I think her glue is very shaky). But when the game tries to lie to my face about Junpei I can't help but eye roll all the way back to the stone age.

I think I got everything I could think of before going to work.......obvie, again, it's not SUPER in detail with evidence, I'm just giving you a quick and dirty review on the character.

Oh....Also I'm preeeetty sure PQ1/2!Junpei is an imposter. I don't blame SEES for ignoring it too. I'd also just be happy he hung up his assholery hat for a few hours.

kaiju no. 8 thoughts!!!!

~long post ahead~

just caught up on 20ish chapters and its been satisfying so far. i guess the two weeks (or 3?) interval on publishing each chapter is efficient for the author (the talented naoya matsumoto!!) to craft a non-rushed, smooth plot. the characters are promising, each of them seems to have a clear motivation and they are all made useful in the fights. everyone GETS a role, even if brief. or if they haven't yet, their appearance makes me anticipate for future actions. and the character designs! they are all so cool! some top-tier shit going on here. the functioning, gender-neutral suit design and the weapons! he gets a giant weapon, she gets a giant weapon, everybody gets a giant weapon! grotesque monster designs too! definitely reminds me of pacific rim.

and here's the thing that deserves to be discussed: the elder's faith in the younger generation. i do love stories that highlight intergenerational relationship – the contrast, conflict, trauma and so forth. i'm gonna make a little comparison with jujutsu kaisen here. jjk has conflict between the conservative higher-ups and the younger generation of sorcerers whose powers defy the conformity in the traditional jujutsu world. to put it simply, in jjk, the younger gen. and their powers inflict fear within the elder, traditional sorcerers – making them go as far as attempting executions on these kids or holding them down by grades system. meanwhile, in kn8, the younger generation of the kaiju defense force become the elder, higher ranking soldiers' ray of hope. they put their trust on the youngsters, see them as equal regardless of age and gender, even the newly recruited soldiers are given the same chance to prove themselves in a battle. and i think this is the core strength in their organization: faith and equality. the outcome of the elders' treatment towards the youngsters in the respective series is also striking: rebellion and violence in jjk, healthy growth and mutual respect in kn8. BOTH ARE GREAT. they portray how the role of the older generation shapes the younger and how it plays in the narrative/character development.

of course i have to talk about the treatment of the female characters. i consider myself to be critical of how they write female characters in a story but when it comes to stereotypical shounen manga, i don't really want to expect too much. and i find matsumoto-sensei to be quite adequate in handling his female characters. first, the common problem of girls in shounen manga: character design. no unnecessary fanservice in their physical appearance, yet they still have their own appeal. they are not drawn in male gaze-y angles as far as i can remember. and then! a girl (specifically a love interest, often a damsel in distress at that) being the mc's motivation is such a common trope in shounen. this trope also applies to kn8's mc, kafka, but in a quite subversive way. he looks up to his childhood friend, mina, who is one of the commanders in the defense force. she is strong and influential, and kafka's motivation is to stand by her side, as in being equal to her. it's sooo refreshing to see in shounen.

and then there's the badass shinomiya kikoru, who is the strongest among the new recruits. she's tough and confident, yet still has softer and compassionate side. she's also the daughter of the defense force's director general – and while she can get insecure w her strength due to her father's expectations, her character does not entirely revolve around being the daughter of a powerful man and i love her for it. she's aware of her capabilities and she knows she is her own person. [SPOILER ALERT] her backstory in particular made me appreciate her even more. she looked up to her mother, who was a powerful and beloved defense force commander in her era. kikoru's motivation to continue her mother's fight, to protect everyone in her mother's stead, once again feels refreshing. it's something that is usually seen in a male character with his father, but matsumoto-sensei proved that such motivation could be easily executed on female characters. i could go on about how precious the shinomiya family is, but i guess i should make a separate post for that.

so in conclusion: if want to see a wholesome 30 yr old man mc who can turn into a monster, healthy and fun rivalries, cool character, weapon and monster designs, balanced lighthearted and serious moments, plot-relevant and well-written female characters, please give kaiju no. 8 a try. it's entertaining and engaging, it still has 54 chapters so you can binge it in one sitting. and shit's about to go down too! the mysterious villain just declared war! i'm curious if the story will darken as the plot moves, kinda like jjk before and after shibuya arc lmao sorry for keep comparing them but it's with good intention. this manga has the potential to be big and hopefully gets an anime adaptation. can't wait to see that and i hope the fandom quickly grows because i need the content!!

HCs and OCs for a fic

Toyomitsu family: Descended from one of the first giant mutants in Japan. Tend to have monster or animal related transformation quirks in addition to being huge. Own farmland and forested areas all over the Kansai region. The family founded the Devil’s Market yakuza group which has been extremely long-running and focused on buying and selling illicit goods, general goods, and general supplies and labor for larger people. A Toyomitsu has been either the boss or first lieutenant of the Devil’s Market for as long as it’s existed. They had to move out of their Osaka base when All For One set up shop, their current main base of operations is in Esuha city. The family also runs a franchise of butcher shops across most of Japan under the name of Oni Meats which carries a vast selection of animal protein from around the world. Nearly all members of the family have prey drives from their monstrous transformations.

Ma- Manami- (Quirk) Bugbear- transformation quirk. If the user is sufficiently fat then they can transform into a hybrid bear/reptile monster. Has great senses and night vision as well as enhanced strength. Can induce fear by staring someone directly in the eyes. -->Prefers not to be involved with the less legal dealings of the family and Devil’s Market. She’s more than capable of being as much of if not more a terrifying mob boss than her little brother. She just likes farming better. -->Generally doesn’t look people in the eyes unless she doesn’t like them b/c her terror-inducing power stays active regardless of her form. She prefers not to scare folks who don’t deserve it. -->Gets on very well with her sister-in-law, if she wasn’t married she’d steal her brother’s wife. -->Met her husband in a fighting ring. She eviscerated him with her claws and he broke one of her arms and several of her ribs. They started talking while getting patched up. -->Is about 7’10” and built like a well-padded brick house. -->Is the one who judges new recruits into the gang. Tends to have them do farm work for at least a month to get a bead on their personalities.

Pa- Noel ‘Blue Devil’ Diablo nee Toyomitsu- (Quirk) Energy absorption- emitter quirk. Can absorb, temporarily store, and redirect kinetic/thermal/electric energy. Too much energy kept in the body for too long causes reckless and impulsive behavior and hyperactivity. Devil- mutant quirk. Has devil-like horns and a tail. -->Used to be a nomad b4 settling down with his strong beautiful wife. Supported himself on his travels with fighting, gambling, handyman skills, and musical skills. -->Brings nothing to the table in his household other than his good looks, good nature, and knack for fixing things and a broad range of skills. -->Holding in excess energy makes him glow blue, especially his horns. -->Loves his family just so much. Is the goofy dad and great flirty husband. -->Loved to carry his kids until they got waaaay too big for him to pick up. Stands on a char to talk to his kids and wife on their level. B/c they are just so damn tall. -->Is 6 ft tall with a strong build with very little body fat b/c of a side effect of his quirk. He gets cold easily b/c of this and it bothers his joints.

Grandpa- Ryuji ‘The Dragon/ Dread Emperor of Giants’ - (Quirk) Dragon- transformation quirk. Can transform into an eastern dragon or humanoid eastern dragon with the severity of the transformation depending on percentage of body fat. Can also control the weather. -->Controlling the weather means that his farms never have a bad year. He does sell this service on the black market through the Devil’s Market. -->Wanted to be a hero when he was young and stopped when his mom got sent to jail for vigilantism and murder for stopping a serial killer from preying on women in the community -->Retired after a betrayal from some too ambitious underlings lead to a crippling knee injury. Still acts as a source of wisdom for the family and the gang. -->Is the go-to babysitter. -->Prefers to be in his transformed state and hates the anti-public quirk use laws with a passion. -->His full dragon form is as long as a bus and can fly. His humanoid dragon form/human form (sans antlers) is 8’5”

Grandma- Akane- (Quirk) None. -->An ex-mercenary who beat Ryuji in his prime AND in his full dragon form with nothing but some rope and her bare hands. -->Very good with guns and knives -->Takes advantage of the fact that as a plump quirkless woman she tends to get overlooked by people with powers to end fuckers. -->Was the one who got rid of the over-ambitious underlings who attempted a coup against her husband. -->Is about 5’10”, very chubby, wears glasses, and is rather soft-spoken. -->Is an icon to the quirkless members of the Devil’s Market and teaches them how to fight people with powers.

Uncle- Wani ‘The Butcher’- (Quirk) Crocodilian- transformation quirk. Similar to grandpa but crocodile instead of dragon. Has a great sense of smell and hearing as well as night vision. Is bulletproof at full strength. -->A strong proponent of community defense to the point where more people came to him about community issues than go to police or heroes. He gets problems handled permanently. -->Also heavily invested in technology and occult studies to see if there was a way to make life easier for people -->Also prefers to be in his transformed state -->Caught and ate 3 quirk diagnosing doctors in the area who were trafficking children into human experimentation. Managed to rescue most of the kids. -->Was arrested and sent to Tartarus for a string of killing corrupt cops and heroes fucking around in his neighborhood. His family often visits him. -->Fell for his wife when she bet him she could drink him under the table with the loser paying the tab. She won. -->Is about 8 ft tall and at least half as wide b4 going to jail. In prison he rapidly lost weight, the family is planning a jailbreak.

Auntie- Jay ‘Jaybird/Hummingbird’ Johnson nee Toyomitsu- (Quirk) Fast Twitch- emitter quirk. A speedster type. Can move and think at superhuman speeds for a few minutes at a time every hour. Has a very high metabolism and needs to consume large amounts of food in general. -->Was a villain before settling down. Still pulls off a robbery every now and then and has a fondness for gems. -->A Black American who came to Japan to hide from law enforcement after a heist gone wrong. -->Thinks that the way people throw the word villain around to just about any fucker committing any kind of crime while using a quirk really dilutes the word. Thinks that villains need fun costumes and proper themes and intent. -->Her sister-in-law was one of the first women she’s ever met who never criticized her eating habits and she would kill for the other woman. Ride or die friendship. -->Is constantly hungry due to her speedster metabolism and has to eat a lot. -->About 5’8” and leggy with plenty of visible muscle.

Sister- Onini ‘Oni/Gargoyle’- (Quirk) Gargoyle- transformation quirk. Can transform into a stone-skinned gargoyle with the severity of the transformation being dependant on amount of body fat. Heat Sink- emitter quirk. Can absorb, store, and release thermal energy. -->Tried to become a hero but was bullied out of school -->Named after one of her mom’s friends -->Considers cousin Kenji to be effectively one of her brothers -->Became a firefighter and uses her quirks on the job even tho it’s illegal. Not like the people she’s saving are gonna complain. -->Tends to flirt with strong women. -->Actually tends to stay partially transformed b/c she likes having a tail and passes herself off as a mutant -->If she gets too hungry and loses control she can become a heat vampire and freeze things to death while feeding on their body heat. -->Spends a lot of time helping out on the farm and her mother is most likely to pass ownership of the family land to her once she retires. -->The most likely person in her generation of the family to have biological kids. --->Keeps teasing Fatgum about when he’s gonna officially adopt his interns. -->Is about 7’5” and technically is too heavy to fly but she glides pretty well.

Cousin- Kenjiro ‘Kenji/Ken/Shuten’- (Quirk) Fast Oni- transformation quirk. Can transform into an oni with enhanced speed and strength. Transforming causes his metabolism to speed up and he burns fat to stay in oni form. Has a speedster metabolism in regular form, if he doesn’t eat a substantial meal every 5 hours he starts losing weight (fat and muscle) rapidly and is consequently always hungry. -->Would love to stay in his transformed form but can’t due to the timer. -->Is jealous of Taishiro’s height and metabolism so he makes fun of the way Tai’s face looks when he’s transformed. Also jealous of Onini’s ability to not be constantly hungry. -->Is constantly hungry from the day his quirk came in and had to take appetite suppressants during puberty to keep from losing his head and chowing down on anything and anyone in reach during his growth spurts. -->Has been mistaken for Fatgum more than once due to their similar-ish size and clothing choices. It frustrates him to no end b/c he’s way darker than Tai and prefers wearing blue or white. -->Has intentionally eaten people. Most notable example being him ending a war with a rival yakuza group by capturing, butchering, and cooking the rival leader and openly serving him for dinner at the peace treaty/gang merger. -->Strongly supports Fatgum as a hero and the two combine resources to help the community whether that is through funding housing for the homeless or getting a very good tailor the resources to make clothing for specific clientele or sending the other to deal with a situation appropriately. -->Brings a knife to a gunfight b/c he’s a superstrong speedster and a gun ain’t go do shit if you ain’t got no hands. -->Thinks Overhaul is a stupid asshole b/c it’s not that hard to get blood out of a kid or train a kid to be ok with it. -->Is about 7’10” and has heard every short joke under the sun from Tai

Fatgum-Taishiro ‘Tai’- (Quirk) Fat Absorption- Transformation quirk into an uncanny valley cartoony blob man that is as strong as the amount of body fat he has. Can absorb, neutralize, or release kinetic energy. Eyes glow in the dark like a cartoon when his quirk is active. Has a great sense of taste and is incapable of feeling sated/is always hungry. Also has an extremely efficient digestive system that breaks food down in seconds. Can also convert fat into muscle as well as generally having enhanced strength and speed while transformed. -->Was a late bloomer. His quirk didn’t start coming in till he was 8 and it took a while b4 he was fat enough for it to have notable effects. -->Preferred being in his skinnier form during middle and high school due to bullying and self-esteem issues that he didn’t work through until his early twenties. -->Started high school at 5’7” (170 cm) at 14 yrs old and was 8’2 (250 cm) when he graduated at 18 yrs old. Puberty was hell and pants were his enemy. -->Had a friend in hero support who took it as a personal challenge to make him clothing that he couldn’t destroy, that would grow and shrink with him, and that he couldn’t outgrow heightwise either. Ended up inventing ‘indestructible pants’ and making bank. -->Does not have canine teeth due to a mutation related to his quirk. Does have several rows of teeth that can replace themselves like a shark’s due to the same mutation. The fuckery of his mouth is only really noticeable if he’s ‘stretching’/pushing his transformation to its fullest extent or if someone’s feeling around inside of his mouth for whatever reason. -->Does not have a gag reflex -->Has been constantly hungry since his quirk emerged and like Kenji had to take appetite suppressants during his growth spurts to keep control of himself. An asshole classmate once replaced his appetite suppressants with appetite stimulants to see what happens. Several people ended up hospitalized, Taishiro still has nightmares about it and said asshole student actually managed to get expelled. Has a restraining order against said asshole classmate who fucked off to England to be a hero there. -->Is so glad he’s done growing. Went through clothes like water when he was a teen. -->Going several days without getting enough calories in tends to activate his prey drive and he really doesn’t like that b/c heroes shouldn’t murder or maul people. Figured out this aspect when he mauled a bully after his quirk just came in and later during a survival training exercise in hero school in which he ended up eating a live bear after several days of living on trail rations (scared his teammates for life with that one). -->A lot of aspects of his costume with the bright colors and friendly mannerisms is to reduce the intimidation factor/terrifying aspects of his appearance. He is aware that in his transformed state he’s a giant uncanny valley cartoony egg man monster that can fucking absorb people into his body. -->While transformed his limb, mouth, and eye proportions are extremely fluid and change nearly at will. If he wants to his face can be entirely mouth, which he knows is terrifying to other people. His arms and legs can rubber hose it though they aren’t as strong when he does that, does mean he can grab from angles that shouldn’t be possible. -->Was bullied as a kid for being ‘quirkless’ b4 his quirk manifested and then he was bullied for being fat. It did a number on his self-esteem as a teen leading him to prefer using his thinner form as his default. -->His thinner form was considered a heartthrob in school to his frustration. Didn’t mean he didn’t take advantage of the fact people found him hot to make money or flirt a free lunch off of someone. Was in a hot guy calendar made and distributed by one of his classmates. -->It absolutely gets on his nerves when people only find his skinny form attractive. -->After graduation, he lost muscle b/c that starter hero paycheck ain’t shit and the Hero Commission refused to let him write off food costs as business expenses. Had to save his food money for patrols leading to him losing weight. -->Participated in underground fighting rings to both make some money on the side and get better at using his quirk -->Has tried Trigger b4 and carries a small vial of the good version of it just in case he really needs it one day. (Listen, you ain’t finding shit trying to pat down fucking Fatgum) -->While transformed the absorbing things into him thing is automatic, put too much pressure on the flabbier parts of his body and you’ll just sink in. It takes effort to release things and took him a while to learn how to do this as a kid. Before he learned how to release things, he’d just turn off his quirk to get things out of him. -->Was blackmailed into working for the cops after getting caught during a raid of one of the fighting rings he was participating in. Decided to be a double agent and give away info on cases to the Devil’s Market to help them stay ahead of the cops. Also blew a decent chunk of the Osaka police force’s budget on his feeding since they wanted to use him. Ultimately this is what caused the police to break their partnership with him b/c he was too damn expensive to keep on the payroll. -->Once he became decently popular he and the Devil’s Market started funding a superhero trade school to get people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to get into hero schools for various reasons trained up and educated enough to get a hero license. -->As a hero he just doesn’t enforce the dumber laws like anti-public quirk use laws b/c who cares if people use their quirks if they aren’t hurting anyone. Also prefers not to label criminals as villains unless they’ve done some truly heinous shit b/c he knows that villains get harsher punishments in the justice system. Is also a strong proponent for rehabilitation for criminals. -->Once got caught in a scandal where he and a close friend and classmate managed to get a quirkless friend of theirs enrolled in their hero school with the help of a hacker. It took months for the school to catch on, during which said quirkless friend excelled in the hero classes. Fatgum and his friend nearly got expelled when caught. Later he helps that quirkless friend get a provisional hero license to become Japan’s first quirkless hero. -->From his family history, to his accent, to his size, to his ancestry Fatgum got torn apart by the media when he first started making waves. It took years but his image as a fun friendly beloved hero won out over ‘loose canon with criminal ties who’ll probably turn villain any day now’ -->Most of his sidekicks are folks he knew in his underground fighting days or rehabilitated criminals. Sidekicks and interns from actual hero schools are picked based on both potential as well as ‘how well can you bend the law/see in shades of grey instead of black and white?’. Essentially interning with Fatgum is a long process of unlearning propaganda and a practical application of morality on a case by case basis. -->Is aware of the hornier corners of his fandom and doesn’t know how to get them to understand that death via snusnu is not a way they want to go out (“How do you know this?” “...No comment.”) and telling them that they would def either die or require medical attention only makes them hornier. He finds it distressing and tries to avoid these people. -->Only found out that his name and birthday were puns when he was in middle school. He was not pleased. His parents had a blast since they were waiting for him to figure it out. -->When transformed his face, hands, feet, knees, and elbows are the most vulnerable parts of his body. Hence the leg armor (and occasionally arm armor). -->Due to his size, he’s got a few glaring blind spots, the main one being that he simply can’t see past his belly when looking down. He has tripped over short people b4 b/c of this. At least one of his friends from school would take advantage of this when he was in his larger form to sneak up on him.

Kyidyl Does Archaeology - Part 5

Pottery and shErds

So, what are we talking about today? Well, I think the next thing is gonna be pottery. This is where we’re gonna talk about time, space, and dating a site.�� Because most people think that the only way to date an archaeological site is via C14. That’s not true, and actually we don’t always do it. C14 dating can have some problems, including that the wood used in the fire is likely older than the time in which it was cut down and burned. It also only goes back 50,000 years, so anything older than that won’t have any carbon isotopes (it’ll have all decayed), and we have to use other things that are more expensive. And c14 testing itself is expensive - we sent in 2 samples and it was around $500/sample so we spent about $1000 on testing. Instead, there are other ways to date a site and one of the most accurate is pottery.

See, like all other kinds of material culture (AKA, stuff people leave behind. Non-material culture is like...song and story and stuff like that.), pottery follows stylistic trends and trends in how it was made. And it does this both regionally and chronologically. Which is great, because if we find bits of one type of pottery we know is made in one place in a settlement in another place, then we know the two people traded with each other. But I have to explain something else so that determining a date from pottery makes sense.

Every area of the country has what’s called a “type site” for a given period of time. In undergrad I was lucky enough to actually get to work on the type site for the Safety Harbour period, which is Weedon Island....ironically enough there’s a Weedon Island period and Weedon Island isn’t the type site for that period so uuuhhh...yeah it’s weird lol. Anyway, a type site is a site that is considered stereotypical for a given time and place in history. Usually they’re large and well-preserved, and they’re often the first sites found in that time period/area (but not always, which is how the above weirdness happened.). And so what happens is we dig ‘em and analyze the finds and do testing on those finds. So now we know “hey, this kind of pottery comes from here and it is X years old”. Now you know when you find it in other places where and when it comes from. This is all a very generalized explanation, but I think any more is like extraneous detail you don’t need. Just know that things like type sites help us determine where and when stuff like pottery was made. Lots of literature usually exists for type sites, but I actually can’t remember the type site for this area for this time period.

We also use a term called “diagnostic”, which is used much as it is in medicine. If we find a certain thing that was only made during a specific time period or in a certain place, then it’s diagnostic. IE, a certain kind of pottery is diagnostic of the late, middle, or early Woodland. The pottery we have at our site is diagnostic of the late Woodland. Some of the lithics we thought might be a bit earlier, but honestly I think that was just misidentification by the site director bc we were in the field at the time. Lastly, identifying pottery has a few components. Color and decoration I think are easy to understand (they didn’t have glazes, but you can make different colored pottery by varying the composition of the clay and the temperature at which it is fired.). Paste and temper are the other two. IDK how modern pottery is made, but old ass pottery is made with paste - the main body of the clay, the matrix that contains the temper - and temper. Temper is stuff they’d crush up and mix in to help it not break during firing and heating during normal use. So we combine these factors to ID the pottery and thus the age of the site and trading habits of the people in question. One last thing you need to understand about pottery - ancient people used pottery the way that we use disposable things. They didn’t think it was like an important thing that had to keep safe. They’d use it until it broke and then toss it in the garbage pit and make a new one. So it’s really common and we find it all over the place, but TBH in the future pottery *won’t* be diagnostic anymore because our ceramics come in such a wide variety that we couldn’t possibly hope to narrow down time or place.

Alright, so who wants pictures? You, of course. Who *doesn’t* want pictures? Here’s some of the pottery we found:

This is the larger shard that I found in the features I’ve talked about in previous installments. You can see where I accidentally broke it. >.> Anyway it’s kind of unique bc of the light color outside and the black inside. It’s like...idk, 4 or so inches long.

This is a rim piece that I happened to find two matching sherds of. I always check the rim pieces because the patterns on them usually make them easier to fit together. Honestly I’ve got hundreds of pot sherds from this site and I don’t have the sanity to try and make pots from them.

This is the outside and inside respectively of the largest piece we have. TBH taking this thing out of its box and handling it makes me nervous because of how large it is - about the size of my hand, but I did include my earbuds for scale. The black is charring from both firing and subsequent use, and it came out of the pit feature I’ve been talking about. And do you wanna know the cool thing about the inner surface of pottery? Because they didn’t use glazes, the surface was porous and retains the unique chemical traces of what was made in them. However, the vast majority of the time those kinds of tests aren’t done because archaeology as a whole is extremely underfunded and trace chemical analysis of pot residue is an expensive test requiring expensive equipment and expensive scientists. Funnily enough I probably could do some of this testing bc I used to be premed and so I’ve taken a lot of chemistry and know how to read a mass spec thing, but I don’t have access to the chemicals or tools to do these kinds of tests. Plus, they’re often destructive...which....I mean...there’s so much pottery that it doesn’t really matter if one piece gets destroyed but like you do still have to be careful *which* piece you destroy.

Anyway, you also can see the striations on the outside piece, and that’s decoration on the pot. It probably also helped with gripping it. This is a piece of Shepardware, which is diagnostic of the late Woodland period in the Shenandoah valley. Here’s some more cool pottery:

This is a random assortment of the kind of stuff we regularly pull out of the ground when it comes to pottery. The most common kind we have is the orange on one side black on the other (3 upper rt pieces), whiteish (upper left 2), orange on both sides (lower left 3) and totally black (lower right 3). All of ‘em are some variety of shepard or pageware. You can see the texture on a lot of them, too. We have a good mix of textured and untextured, and that’s why the composition of the pottery is more diagnostic than the decoration. Frankly, people can and will put whatever design they think looks cool. But they made that particular design by wrapping twine around the end of a flat stick and pressing it into the surface of the wet clay. I also chose those two upper right pieces because they have really visible temper. Here’s a side shot of one of them:

You can see how big the bits are compared to my fingers (yeah, there’s dirt under my nails....I haven’t taken some tweezers to them yet after working on the car.). And...wait, I WAS going to try to describe this to you but then I was like “no, they deserve better” and I broke out my DSLR and my macro lens and took some pics. Here are some macros of the temper:

The white balance is a little off on the top one...the bottom one is more true to color (they aren’t the same piece of pottery, but they are a similar color). So you can see that it’s crushed up limestone. Pardon the depth of field on those...I had to open the aperture pretty wide to get one that wasn’t blurry bc I don’t exactly have bright lights in my room.

Anyway....so that’s the pottery we’ve gotten at the site and what we can learn from it. It’s going to take some time before we can start determining patterns and whatnot in regards to style, but we do have some evidence of trading here because some of the pottery we have is from the piedmont culture....

...wait, let me explain what that means. When archaeologists need to describe a group of people who existed in a given place in a given time based on similarities in material culture regardless of ethnic and social grouping we call it a culture. This is different than the standard meaning of the world culture, or even the way a cultural anthropologist would use the word. So when I say the piedmont culture, I mean people that lived in the general area of the Piedmont plateau during the late woodland. They were of varying tribes, languages, etc. And we do this to describe the extant boundaries of cultural influence of particular trends in physical objects and not the social groupings of the humans in question. So, for example, lots of people are familiar with the Clovis culture. When archaeologists use this term we mean “these are the boundaries of the places we are finding physical objects in the group we’ve named Clovis” not “everyone in this area was a Clovis person”. Like no, obviously, they weren’t. There were tons of social groups, tribes, etc. that were all distinct and different. It’s a way of mapping cultural influence via physical objects to see how far they spread and who was using them.

So, we have some piedmont stuff despite not being in the piedmont area, so we know that they were trading with those natives. If you’re interested in more detail here, this is the VDHR resource I use for IDing pottery. It looks like it came to visit you from the late 1990s, but the info is good and it’s easy to use.

Anyway, that’s it for tonight. Tomorrow is gonna be rocks and weird stuff, depending on how much I end up saying about rocks. Probably not much bc we know how I feel about rocks. ;)

My friends and I occasionally play that made-up game called "Kerfuffle" - A bit like DnD but with everyday life tasks and not as nerdy (sadly :D). You pick a random politician, TV char., etc. and try to overcome some challenges in a way you assume they'd do it. Last time we played, I obv picked s.o. from ST - Joyce. That was when a random thought crossed my mind: If s.o. were to name each ST main character's greatest weakness/ strength, what would be the outcome? I immediately thought of you. :D

Ok, now that the election is over, and my anxiety has come back down to its usual “only a little high” status, it’s back to business here. This is an interesting question from my pal @sollody here. I’m not going to be able to go too much into depth given the breadth of the question here, but it’ll be a nice look at several characters. Perhaps this will result in requests for more in-depth looks at some of them individually. For the sake of having a defined meaning of “main character,” I am only going with characters who were in all three seasons and were directly involved in the action (sorry, Mr. Clarke). I will make an exception for Max, as she’s just too central to leave out.

The Party

Mike

Greatest Strength: Determination. Once he sets his mind on something, he does everything in his power to see that it happens. Do not try to come between Mike and his objective. God help you if you try to stop him when his objective involves Will or El.

Greatest Weakness: A lack of emotional intelligence. Mike reacts to his emotions as they come. There’s no apparent self-awareness, and this results in impulsive behavior that leads to negative outcomes for himself and his relationships. The feelings themselves aren’t the problem. Mike just doesn’t understand them enough to react appropriately.

Will

Greatest Strength: Quick thinking. I was tempted to mention his compassion, but really Will’s greatest asset is his mental acuity. Since season 1 he has shown an impressive capacity for quick thinking in stressful situations.

Greatest Weakness: Insecurity. Will has self-esteem issues resulting from not only the Upside Down situation, but also more mundane personal and family experiences. He worries about how people view him and fears that he’s being left behind. This leads to him keeping important things to himself, things nobody, especially a child, should be expected to deal with alone.

Lucas

Greatest Strength: Rationality. Lucas has generally been the member of the party with the most down-to-earth mindset. Regardless of all of the supernatural goings on, Lucas has tried to view things realistically. His approaches to the events of the series have typically been the most practical, skeptical, and grounded. Ironically, this actually does make him a good Winston, though I wouldn’t want to be the one to tell him this.

Greatest Weakness: Overconfidence. Lucas is very sure of himself, sometimes too much so, even when warned off by others. From being sure that El was trouble, to risking a beating from Billy, to thinking he’s some suave expert on women, Lucas has made trouble for himself and his friends. He doesn’t meant to, of course, and a lot of this may come from some desire to “be a man.” Lucas needs to learn to accept himself as he is.

Dustin

Greatest Strength: Curiosity. Dustin is always looking to learn more about anything and everything. Nothing is too weird or off-putting for him. His knowledge has come very much in handy for the Party, and this general attitude has led to him accepting the supernatural events in stride.

Greatest Weakness: Recklessness. Dustin, in his pursuit of satisfying his curiosity, or some other goal, can fail to see clearly obvious dangers. Find a strange creature? Raise it yourself. See a strange growth in the underground tunnels? Go get a closer look. Find out about a possible Russian base in the mall? Let’s go check it out! His goals are often admirable, but his approach is often foolish.

Greatest Strength: Adaptability. El has managed to escape a government facility, survive in the woods, and travel to unfamiliar locations despite her young age. While she has been somewhat dependent on her powers, she’s managed to accomplish some impressive feats for someone who hasn’t had anything close to resembling a normal upbringing.

Greatest Weakness: Ignorance. This isn’t the “you’re so ignorant!” meaning of the word. I mean it in the truest sense of the word: El just lacks a lot of information in life. Most critically, she’s emotionally and socially unaware. A lot of her schemas for relationships come from TV shows and what little she picked up from Mike in season 1. She’s gotten somewhat better as the seasons moved on, but there’s just a lot she doesn’t know. This had led to her being suspicious, angry, and possessive (specifically of Mike), harming her relationships with others.

Max

Greatest Strength: Acceptance. Max doesn’t unduly judge anyone. Her issues with Mike stemmed from his treatment of her. Aside from that, some light teasing aside, she was more than happy to accept the Party as her friends. She didn’t let Lucas’ race get in the way of their mutual attraction, despite knowing what Neil and Billy would think about it. She wanted to be El’s friend from the start, and, despite being harshly rebuffed at first, she accepted El when she sought Max out in season 3. It’s really a testament to how determined she is to not continue the cycle that Neil and Billy brought into her life.

Greatest Weakness: Family. Honestly, Max’s biggest drawback is her home life. She’s worried that she may end up going down the same angry, abusive road as Billy and Neil. She’s mistrustful, snarky, and blunt even when not worked up, behaviors she likely developed due to exposure to Billy and Neil. She also seems to still love Billy despite his abusive behavior. This sort of family dynamic can be very damaging (and it was probably just as harmful to Billy). Hopefully, Max’s found family serves to offset the harm done by her “real” family.

Older Teens

Nancy

Greatest Strength: Determination. It must be a family trait. Nancy is relentless, and she will get to the truth of the matter, one way or another. Nobody, and indeed no monster, will keep her from what she’s after.

Greatest Weakness: Egocentrism. Nancy can easily lose sight of how things impact those around her. Her desire to prove herself has left her somewhat blind to the difficulties other people face. She has trouble relating to people from other situations.

Jonathan

Greatest Strength: Compassion. Jonathan has sacrificed a great deal for his family, and he’s apparent done it without any noticeable resentment. His treatment of Will resembles the ideal that a lot of parents hope for in their kids (though in reality Mike/Nancy or Lucas/Erica is the more realistic outcome). Jonathan just wants those important to him to be happy.

Greatest Weakness: Social Awkwardness. Jonathan has a great deal of trouble interacting with other people. This likely stems from his family situation, as his father leaving left his family as pariahs of sorts, and it also left him having to be a sort of father figure when he should have been able to be a regular teenager.

Steve

Greatest Strength: Courage. Yes, Steve has been freaked out by everything, but that’s irrelevant. Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s the ability to feel fear and not let it control you. Steve has willingly put himself in harm’s way for the sake of others in all three seasons. The only thing that scares Steve too much to overcome is social judgment...

Greatest Weakness: Insecurity. Yes, our buddy, King Steve, has self-esteem issues. This is why he’s always trying to play himself off as a hotshot. He’s simply too afraid to just be himself. Sadly, it’s only when he lets this guard down that he’s at his best. He’s made some stride at overcoming this, and I’m hopeful that he continues this in season 4.

Adults

Joyce

Greatest Strength: Ferocity. Do I even need to explain this? Do NOT threaten Joyce’s loved ones, especially Will. Just don’t.

Greatest Weakness: Emotional Reactivity. When stress hits Joyce, she reacts hard. It’s perfectly normal, given the level of stress she feels, but it leaves her seeming “crazy” and makes it hard for others to understand what she’s trying to get across. As a result, her message, warning, etc. is lost and her credibility is damaged. In less serious occurrences, she instead just comes across as belligerent or annoying, even though she’s generally right about whatever she’s on about.

Hopper

Greatest Strength: Compassion. Hopper is at his best when he’s trying to protect others. Despite having worked to close himself off from the world after his personal trauma, Hopper still feels compassion. He probably never wanted to feel anything for anyone again (perhaps why he returned to a boring town like Hawkins), but when tragedy struck it brought out the best in him. Though, that brings us to his weakness...

Greatest Weakness: Insensitivity. Perhaps ironically, Hopper’s weakness is the complete opposite of his strength. Hopper is a man who runs hot and cold. Which version of him that you get depends on his mood. If you get his bad side, prepare for harsh words, and perhaps harsher fists. This may help him get the job done at times, but it harms his relationships. He has a tremendous fear of loss, which results in him lashing out fiercely at those he cares for if they do something to that risks him losing them.

Ok, that’s the best I could come up with. I’d love to read other people’s thoughts on the matter.
