I'm banking on flashback. If it takes place in 1987, then Holly would only be 7.
It wouldn't be much of a leap to assume, either. We already know we're getting Will flashbacks.
They are searching for young students... 9-11yo... Plus the teacher... Maybe there are scenes of Holly at school? Or maybe it's a flashback for someone else

We're gonna get a scene with Steve and Robin where they lament still having to work during the apocalypse.
Also, 1 Day New Release rental? Time to scope out what the new VHS releases were around that time. It probably means nothing, but I love to do stuff like that.

I think that's exactly what we're going to see. We've already been told that we will find out why Will was taken. I think it'll go down in a similar fashion to the flashback to the massacre at the Lab last season.
In episode 1, we will only get part of the story. Enough of it will be omitted to mask the true implications of what happened, like how the initial Lab flashback made it seem like El was responsible for the massacre, only for the truth to be revealed much later.
I think the flashback with season 1 Will is going to be a nightmare Will is having, but he always wakes up before remembering anything that might be helpful. Somehow, he's able to tap into the full memory, similarly to how El did, and he comes away with knowledge and/or abilities that bring hope for victory.
Bro in the bts of Noah with his kid double, is he recreating his scene at the end of ep7 s1 or am I insane?? Because I know that ep1 of s5 is gonna open with Will singing should I stay or should I go, and that's what he was singing in that scene in s1 so are we gonna see the continuation of when he was taken to the library but from his pov??😭

The Duffers do like to choose songs for their soundtracks that sound nice on a casual listen, but that also fit the scenes very nicely if you listen to the lyrics carefully.
s4's choice of "California Dreamin" and what it says about El, Mike, and Byler
Tumblr media
Season 4 opens with "California Dreamin," specifically a 1986 Beach Boys cover of the classic 60s Mamas and the Papas song. It plays over El's letter telling Mike how "great" things are in California, when of course we know it's not true.
The song sounds at first bright and sunny, but it's actually a pretty dark song, musically and lyrically. The singer is in a cold winter ("All the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey") They go into a church and "pretend to pray" to find shelter from the cold. Which is very fitting for El, who is pretending to be someone she's not and painting a false picture for Mike:
Stopped into a church I passed along the way Well, I got down on my knees And I pretend to pray
El is finding only temporary warmth in a church, which also is appropriate because it is traditional: she is trying to convince herself that she has an ideal happy life with many friends and a traditional relationship with a loving boyfriend.
The song is just as much about Mike as it is about El: he is also "California Dreamin" because he's looking forward to being in California to be with El (and Mike!).
The Beach Boys' cover doesn't have all the original lyrics. The original song has another lyric that is interesting for El and Byler. (The Beach Boys' cover was probably chosen because it came out in 1986.)
Here it is:
All the leaves are brown And the sky is gray I've been for a walk On a winter's day If I didn't tell her I could leave today California dreamin' On such a winter's day
The singer wants to be in warm and sunny California, but is held back because they promised something to a girl.
Does this idea of being held back from happiness due to sense of obligation to a girl sound familiar, Byler Nation?
And the song plays while Mike is reading El's letter:
Tumblr media
In both El's case and Mike's case, the song talks about "California Dreamin" but it's actually quite unsettling and dark. They are NOT in a warm and sunny place. They're finding reprieve sneaking into a church and "pretending to pray." Mike would go somewhere warmer, where he doesn't have to hide in a church to be warm. If he didn't make a promise to a girl he "could leave today."
Haven't seen this elsewhere so I wanted to share...
P.S. Follow and read my blog! I have so much to say!

I do sometimes wonder what may have been had he survived. El did, after all, tap into a part of him that he had buried for years. We'll never know, though, and I doubt it would ever have been considered cute. Too much had simply happened between them. Things may have improved, but not that drastically.
It's sad to see people still romanticize Billy. The guy ended up being a tragic character, all things considered, but not one to be cooed over. Abusive past or not, he still did and said horrible things that shouldn't be ignored.
saw a comment today about how if billy hadn’t died his relationship with max would have become “wonderfully cute” and almost went on a rant about it here, but i’m working on that and am wisely keeping my mouth shut.

Where have they been publicly endorsing it, though? If people are thinking this because of that hawkinsfamilyvideo account (not sure if I got the name right) then I have to why people think it's an official source. I don't recall it ever being verified as such.
Here's the thing. Here's the take.
If they're that public and endorsing about the song Boys Don't Cry that was never mentioned outside a poster on Will's wall in one scene, then they goddamn know they put that One Way sign there. They treat Boys Don't Cry like it was text, and if we're treating wall decor like text...

I don't know that I've ever made a fanart request, but an idea struck me this morning.
The Party as the characters from the 80s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. It can be an AU or just the Party cosplaying, doesn't matter.
Mike as Eric the Cavalier.
Will as Presto the Magician.
Lucas as Hank the Ranger.
Dustin as Bobby the Barbarian.
El as Sheila the Thief.
Max as Diana the Acrobat.
Anyone interested in making this a reality? I have zero artistic skill.

Ahem, excuse me. I must need a lozenge.
All I hear is that badass Ted Wheeler is coming and he's gonna be killing Demogorgons!!! He also says in another interview that the first two episodes are breathtaking

This is perhaps an unpopular opinion at this point, but I do not think that Mike realizes he has feelings for Will.
Not yet, anyway.
To be quite honest, I don't think Mike understands love well enough to know it when he feels it. He grew up in a family with parents who clearly don't love each other. He watched his older sister go out with the popular guy in school, and he probably doesn't even realize that the relationship fell apart because Nancy didn't really love him. He's friends with a group of nerds who don't really get much romantic attention. Ironically, Will gets the most attention from girls, much to his discomfort.
Mike has spent the past three years under the impression that he loves El. She's a girl, she needed him, and he took care of her. Because of that, everyone around him believed Mike had a thing for her, so, naturally, Mike assumed that must be it. What else could it be, right?
However, Will has always been special to Mike. He acts differently around him, and he treats Will more softly than he does anyone else. He's willing to be vulnerable with Will in a way he has trouble doing with anyone else. Will being mad at him hits him in a way that makes him ease up, despite him being snarky and surly with anyone else who he's fighting with (including El). The problem is that Mike never really considered that any of this could mean anything. It must just be a best friend thing. What else could it be, right?
I think the show has done a good job building up Mike's mistaken feelings in both relationships. The question now is how they'll find the time for him to realize his mistake and come to terms with loving a boy, all the while dealing with a superhuman interdimensional monster.

and here’s their group photo for reference ! before the switch. so it was intentional. will’s tube is slightly bigger and his backpack doesn’t have the square on the top.
Tumblr media
very sweet and a small detail showing how much mike cares for will. now tell me this show doesn’t have insane attention to detail

looking at this again and babes there is no way byler is not endgame and this scene is exactly why
Tumblr media
there is no logical explanation for this moment except byler, when they do this shit right here focusing on a character this much it's because there's a reason and it's not just friendship
if Will's storyline was about just his unrequited love for Mike then they would have focused only on Will being upset and this scene would not exist at all!!
This scene is exclusively there to show that Mike misses WILL in a special way and not like his other friends...
There was no reason to focus on Mike twice because we already had this shot here that could have been enough for a storyline where Mike is sad that Will is gone but really heartbroken by El leaving more... They didn't need to isolate Mike again almost in secret from the other characters that are going away!
