In the Eyes of the Beholder

Posted the final chapter of the big fic for the stb-bingo!

And for those of you who read it I have some notes on What Happens Next (too long for ao3):

- Howard dies out of alcoholism-related illnesses. He almost feels remorse at the end and tries to leave SI to Tony, but Tony says suck it, and Stane gets the company. (Maria and Tony reconcile! She likes James!) In 2008 Stane orchestrates the kidnapping to make Tony create better weapons (he doesn’t have anything really good after Howard’s death). Tony’s guilt ridden because he thinks making the choice to leave SI in Stane’s hands was the reason Bad Things happened. He creates Iron man. The kidnapping itself is less than 3 months, though. Tony introduces very alive Yinsen to his very angry husband. Fun times for everyone.

- James: if I had a nickel every time I accidentally became a superhero’s sidekick/babysitter…

- Coulson is still on the job during im! Everyone at SHIELD thinks it’s a shitty job because they think nobody’s getting anything from Tony. There are not a lot of people who remember Agent Barnes’s time at SHIELD, tho. Coulson has a tea party with his two good friends (he is Phil from 5th chapter!! He and Tony are friends now!). Easiest job he’s ever done.

- Vanko and Hammer trying to kill Tony: 🔫 James: 🔫 🔫 🔫 Tony: babe pls stop apprehending my enemies before I do anything it’s embarrassing James: you are SICK go TO BED

- oh yeah Pepper is there, her and Tony are bros! her and James are also bros! she also is the ceo of Stark Resilient from the almost beginning because Tony needed a business person for when it’s all too tiring.

- also Nat isn’t there cause Coulson wants another tea party with his friends. He lies to Fury about that (I think it’s very funny if Fury doesn’t know. Like nobody really knows, it’s been a while since James worked there and his identity was on a need to know basis. Coulson needed to know because he started as James’s secretary). He gets a heavy bonus after. Tony makes him play double agent and steal any stuff that Howard left there because there might be some info on a potential new element. 

- the avengers movie is basically the same, but with more old married couple bickering

- Tony: met your bff, he’s a dick and we almost killed each other. James: oh, it went well? Tony: … James: I know you both. The fact that everyone is alive is a blessing.

- Coulson: I suggest we make him the leader of the team. Fury: is that the fucking winter soldier? why the fuck would we do that? Coulson: he’s the only one who can make both Stark and Rogers behave. Tony: yeah that’s true. James: Phil :( I want to be a househusband :( why are you all like this :(

- James becomes the leader of the avengers. mostly it’s running around with a broom to hit everyone who’s being stupid and self-sacrificial and yell TONY NO! STEVE NO!

- for im3 I have two options: 1) it doesn’t happen at all because Tony’s not a dick in 1999 2) it happens but they kidnap James. It ends very very quickly.

- no cap2 because James and Peggy ended hydra way earlier! Steve and Sam just jog together for a long time. Sam eventually becomes a part of the team but it's a very awkward process because Steve doesn’t know how to make friends normally.

- no aou because I don’t like that movie. also JARVIS is alive.

- civil war is Tony and Steve yelling at each other about responsibility sitting in the kitchen while James cooks dinner for him. At the end he makes them both eat and go to bed then looks at the camera with a vibe of a kindergarten teacher. 

- they beat thanos in like a second. just your usual friday.

- at some point winteriron adopt a ton of kids and retire. only after that Tony makes like a tweet with the ‘oh yeah we’ve been married since the 90s’. it breaks the internet.

It's 4am when Steve finally knocks on Tony's door, clutching the letter that he's hopefully not gotten too late. He thinks about the week after he had gotten over the flu, only to find Tony gone, and things make a lot more sense. Tony answers, half asleep, and to Steve, he's never looked more gorgeous.

"Steve?" Tony asks, muffled through a yawn. "What are you doing here?" He zeroes in on what Steve is holding, and suddenly seems a lot more awake. "Okay, I wrote that a long time ago, and-"

"Please, tell me I'm not too late," Steve interrupts.

She butts her head against Bucky’s arm when she needs attention, she nuzzles against his hand when she wants to be pet — but recently, she’s been doing something new. More and more often, whenever Bucky finds himself laying in bed or sprawled out on the couch, Alpine will come over and burrow under his shirt, curling up next to him.

He has to admit, it’s pretty cute when it first happens. It starts becoming strange the second time. And by the third, Bucky’s downright confused.

“Tony,” Steve breathed, as he did another lap of the room, taking his time to admire the easel set up in one corner and the stacks of blank canvases by the window. There wasn’t any furniture in the quaint, cozy brownstone, at least not yet, but there were more than a few wooden crates overflowing with paint and brushes and sketchbooks lined up along the wall. “This is way too much.”

Tony just offered a casual wave of his hand. “Oh, c’mon, I’m sure you’ll use it all up eventually,” he said from his spot in the doorway, where he’d been taking in Steve’s reaction with a pleased grin. “You go through pencils quicker than you go through punching bags, no harm in having a little extra.”

Steve shook his head, gawking at the boxes of art supplies tucked away neatly just for him, still slightly overwhelmed by the sight of it all. Everything Steve had ever mentioned wanting, even in passing, was here, from a homey studio in the heart of Brooklyn to his favorite brand of watercolors, and while all of the thought that Tony had clearly put into this was very much appreciated—and heart-meltingly touching—Steve was having trouble wrapping his mind around the scale of it.

Over the course of their relationship, Tony had given him some pretty extravagant gifts, but nothing as big as a four-story art studio.

A Secret Garden

It took Bucky longer than it should have to realize what was happening to Tony.  That the floral scent he’d assumed came from his companion’s clothing (or a woman) was in fact coming from very close to Tony’s heart.

It took Bucky longer than it should have to realize what was happening to Tony. At first, he thought the faint floral scent he noticed when standing next to Tony was just a new clothes detergent he was trying out or (as the darker part of his mind suggested) leftover perfume from a one night stand.

But it was stronger the next time he stopped by, and Tony looked a little paler than usual. “You feelin’ okay, champ?” Bucky asked, and Tony flinched, just a little.

“Yeah - just getting run a bit ragged,” Tony replied, a little too casually. “We’ve got a big product launch at the end of the month and I’m having to tie up a lot of loose ends personally.”

“Thought that was Ms. Potts’ job,” Bucky responded, frowning slightly at his companion’s reply. For Tony to admit he was burning his candle at both ends, well that meant he likely wasn’t getting any real rest at all.

“R&D is still my bailiwick, and I know exactly where and how to goose the teams in order to –” Tony interrupted himself with a cough, wet and hacking. He grabbed a shop rag off the nearby bench and held it to his lips for a moment, then stuffed it into a pocket. “Sorry. Just a tickle in my throat. It’s not contagious.”

“I’ll take your word on that.” A burst of scent had accompanied Tony’s cough, and Bucky’s sharp eyes had spotted a tell-tale blood red petal hanging from the edge of the rag. He knew what that meant; or at least what it used to mean. Bucky made a mental note that – once he was alone, that is – to ask JARVIS if hanahaki disease was still something people could suffer from.

This is a fill for today's  @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt [#FFF188 Where Secrets Lie].  I plan on expanding this by the end of the month to fill my Tony Stark Bingo Secret Admirer square, combining a prompt from   @lacrimulafalsa  (see below cut) and ideas from @hddnone‘s excellent (and angsty!) WinterIron hanahaki fic Seeds of Love .

?prompt Tony catches hanahaki disease - but unlike with the classic trope, the disease attacks people who feel unlovable or alone and can be cured by anybody sincerely confessing love or deep affection for the afflicted person. Bucky has had a secret crush on Tony and comes forward - and oh happy day, they get together. What nobody knows is that Steve's been in love with Bucky for a long time. So now he has hanahaki instead. But not wanting to break up two of his best friends, he keeps it a secret... -- Happy Stuckony ending please.

I wrote fics! haha. The badges claiming isn't here yet, but I wanted to make a post, so I made a post :D

and I made a fancy stats sheet, so here it is! 20 squares filled, 11 fics written, around 57k words. I'm cool.

A Wonderful Feeling of Friendship — B4, "Orgy". A crackish stuckony get together with established dorks buckytony and oblivious pining Steve.

things best seen from outside — B1, "Brunch". Winteriron, based on @gayspacesprinkles's art, modern au with pining dorks from outsider's perspective.

every darkness has its dawn — B5, "Sunrise". Post-cw winteriron with Bucky recovering, and love and queerness as a force of resistance. (I'm pretty proud of that one even though it hasn't got much attention)

In the Eyes of the Beholder — 6 chapters for: B3, "Corsetry", N5, "Lapdance", I3, "Socks", B2, "Temperature Play", I1, "Picture Frame", and G5, "Covered in Flour". The biggest fic for the bingo, work name for which was "horny gay club 90s au". Features mid-20s Tony, estranged from his parents, who has to work as a waiter in the shady club, and a mystery client James, slow falling in love, dealing with toxic parenting, schmoop and the sappiest ending.

also, lots of love to @aflour for betaing it!

my love for you runs deeper than memories — I5, "Anniversary". A sequel to The Acts of Kindness (also known as the food fic, or the plot twist one, or the one I was the most proud of). Winteriron are married, Bucky has memory problems, but they are super happy anyway. Melancholic at times, but sweet.

funny things are — N3, FREE. Another work from the I'm most proud of list. A suicide romcom. The worst jokes, but not as horrible as that love confession. cw-canon divergent, Tony had depression all his life, Bucky has his own issues, they bond over wanting to kill themselves.

it's a lie or death — G1, "1940s". Bucky hates the war and lies a lot. Platonic stucky.

It’s All About Love — One fill one bingo! O1-O5, "Verbal Bondage", "Frenemies to Lovers", "Coulson Lives", "Roommates", "Dog Park". My 2012 Tower fic, stony. Steve has one friend, not that many interests, is annoyed at the people not letting him yell fuck transphobes, and has the hugest crush on Tony. It all goes well in the end (or: the one where Steve's a himbo, and they get a dog). I was grinning all the time I was writing it.

The Definition of Nice — I2, "Bicycle". Winteriron. Bucky keeps picking up strays and keeps insisting it doesn't make him a good person (it's all lies).

you are the star I gravitate to — G2, "AU: College". Winteriron. Tony is a popular genius who doesn't date and Bucky is a football player with low self-esteem (and a crush). Cute dorks and math (actual math, yeah).

The Subjectivity of Beauty — N1, "Insecurity". Post-endgame established winteriron. Tony has body issues. Bucky has a lingerie kink. It all works out in the end (because they love each other).

Minimal Affairs, Maximum Dramatics

Prompt: Stucky Bingo: Free (⚾), STB Bingo: Tiberous Stone (🧰), Avengers Bingo: Best Friends since Childhood (🛡️)

Summary: Bucky doesn't want Tony to get married, he does want Tony to be happy just not married

Pairing: Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes

A/N: This is very out of character, I know. I’m still happy with it, enjoy the slight crack. 

“Bucky” Steve yells out in haste as he looks through the mail, looking for an explanation, a something. “What?” Bucky yells back as he walks through the manor towards the front door where Steve is pacing back and forth with a calligraphied letter in his hand.  

He comes and puts his armss around his husband leaning into the back of him reading over Steve shoulder he sees, ‘Tiberous Stone and Tony Stark are to be wed, Save The Date’. 

From his little reaction his husband decides he needs to be the extravagant one (as always) “Can you blue him! We’ve told him so many times not to mess with Tiberous and her he is marrying the man! Has he gone insane!.” 

Bucky just sighs as the warmth of Steve’s body leaves his, Steve storming off to the kitchen. And diltfully so Bucky follows.

“Is this really a big deal Steve? If he wants to marry Stone maybe we should let him,” and if that doesn’t get him the worse look from the man. Steves eyes are wide and mad. Death staring him, and yet everybody still calls Bucky the killer. 

Steve brushes off his idiotic husbands comments and stabs the ivite with a magnet putting it on the fridge. “I wonder if Rhodey knows, he must know!” This rant that Stve goes on is blocked from Buckys mind as he just watches his husband animatingly describing the horror of marriage and Tony. “I should send Rhodey a letter!”

That’s were Bucky blinks as he look from Seve to the phone that is sitting in Steve’s hand , made by Bucky, produced by Bucky, perfect for sending a message. “You have a phone.” Steve just smiles, sweetly as if he couldn’t murder a man. 

“I know, but I want to be dramatic, love you!” Steve leaves kisses Bucky on the cheek, on his way out, leaving Bucky by himself at the kitchen island head i his hands.

God he loves his husband.

Bucky watches his husband lean on his office doorway and so Bucky also leans back, it’s safe then, “what did Rhodey say?” His curious, and the frown on Steve’s face doesn’t sprout good news. 

Steve rolled his eyes moving into the room and sitting in one of the plush chairs across from Bucky. “He said that it’s forced. Something about Howard and good publicity.”

That makes alot of sense to Bucky. He’s worked alot with Howard in the last few years and the amn while intelligent had an ego. He wanted the world to know everything and anything, except for what happened at home, that was carefulllly painted. A beautiful wife, an adoring son, successful husband, the perfect family. Bucky knows that on the inside it’s not like that. 

“Tony is not that dumb, you know he won’t go through with it. Besides he hasn’t even made me best man.” 

Everybody in high society knows that Bucky and  Tony are friends, childhood friends. Brothers in all ways but blood.

“If it does get out that your not best man Tony will be ridiculed,” Steve says shocked. But Bucky not worried, it won’t go head anyway.

Family is more important then social circles and legacies, he’s sure of it.

It does go ahead and Bucky is in a black suit next to Steve in dark blue. 

Tony stands at the front of the chapel in a white suit and holding the hands of Tiberous Stone. 

Suddenly the priest is asking if anybody objects their marriage and Bucky is standing.

And Rhodey does too, ansd Steve stands hand in Buckys and Tony is crying violently at the front of the room.

Happy tears Tony tells them later.

“Thank you for standing up for me,” Tony cries into Bucky's shoulder on the way home, home, Steve, Bucky and Tony's manor. Because Family can be brothers without blood and an extravagant husband and they are perfect.

I noticed you doing character bingos again! I’d like to see one for Zenos if possible. I had fun with him in Stormblood, but found that joy to drowned with how he was handled in Endwalker. By the end I just wanted to be done with that monster. If the game had let me walk away without fighting him, like he suggested, I would have.

Wild, we're about the opposite; I disliked Zenos a great deal in Stormblood--he was bloody useless and an annoyance out of nowhere--while I feel they finally figured him out and mostly hit their stride with him in Endwalker, as he gave up pretending to care about military and political matters and became the wandering blood knight he actually is.

Almost got a bingo, but let's be real; I always have too much to say about major characters.

I also won't say anything negative about folks' WoLships, which are by far the most popular Zenos pairing; folks have their fun and they're welcome to it. But fandom is a good chunk of the issue with Zenos. One either loves him or hates him, and both sides tend to take it to extremes and flanderize / mischaracterize the man rather than dealing with the canon portrayal.

In my opinion, he's not that deep. Yes I have read "The Hunt Begins" thank you I own a copy of Chronicles of Light. It told us nothing new about his history and personality, just gave us a glimpse of where he started to find his focus, exactly as the title tells us. The thing is, Zenos doesn't have to be "deep" (whatever one means by that) to be compelling and do his job as a character in the story. Given his straightforward viewpoints, especially in EW as he gives an answer to Hermes' questions, Zenos himself might scoff at the need to find hidden depth of meaning to his personality and existence.

I've also said somewhere, probably my other big Zenos write-up, that he's not quite tragic, though there's tragedy all around and through him. He chooses to not deal with it in any fashion, a creature of the present entirely.

I think he needed a better introduction, seeded over the HW patches, even just in discussion and rumors if we still didn't see him until that patch 3.55 shot. I think he should have done something in StB other than be a "lose the fight the right way" plot checkpoint and just handing Doma and Ala Mhigo back to the heroes without having to really work for them.

I really think a massive part of the dissatisfaction many folks have with StB's story is that the victories are hollow after so much misery in those lands, who are then each shorted due to sharing the expansion. And a lot of that comes down to the misuse of Zenos, whose attributes are mostly told to us as he sleeps on the throne and bullies his underlings. For a supposedly brilliant man, we never see it in his military strategies, and he's played handily by Fandaniel, who knew just how to pull Zenos's strings.

So yeah. I was ready to be done with him in EW; "In From the Cold" is horrifying but I see it more as Fandaniel's scheme that Zenos goes all into. My WoL stopped caring about Zenos the moment trial 1 ended and Fandaniel's scheme became clear. I eye rolled whenever Zenos came back onscreen, though I think the scene in Garlemald with Jullus and Alisaie were good for him and lead directly into the finale.

I know what I just wrote and that I checked "too much screentime" but honestly he got a shade too little in EW. I DID dread/expect some kinda 11th hour teamup, though the "how" made me laugh incredulously. It worked in its weird way.

The final fight he still didn't understand my WoL but she was done and wanted to make sure it was finally over and he wouldn't darken her door or threaten anyone again. The solo duel is not unknown in other FF games, and I rather enjoyed it and the final punch-out at the end as they exhausted themselves entirely.

Mileage varies, depending on one's WoL, feelings on Zenos, and on that tropey duel of mirrored characters. I've also already spoken to the gripes about him being truly gone per Word of God and while one can do whatever one wants in fanfic, there's a lot of reason it does, in fact, work to leave his corpse at the edge of the universe and I'm OK with it. His part in the story, and how that affects Assumed Default Warrior of Light's self-understanding, is complete.

Like the Ascians, he's done. Interested to see what's up with his Avatar, since we also got nothing on his being a Reaper (could have used more on that too!!) as we move into the 6.x patches and build up of the next arc.
