thinking about how quill used music as his only reminder of his mother, to the point that he would risk his own life to save it and keep part of her alive, and how we're introduced to him as the one who dances while everyone around him rolls their eyes, and how he raises baby groot to be the first of the team to dance as openly and joyfully as him, and how this groot is the first one to dance during the last scene, and how rocket – who hums tunelessly while he works until he's building stereos to play tunes while fighting until his favorite song is "come and get your love" – joins him without any self-consciousness, and how quill left rocket his zune and team leadership but the first gift he ever gave him was a name for what he was: raccoon, and how drax overcomes his stubborn adherence to never dancing because what matters more to him than being a stoic destroyer is being a father, who makes the hundreds of children that look up to him laugh with delight, and who gets to watch mantis (whose innocence reminded him of his daughter) set off into the world with her own purpose the way his own child never got to, and how nebula dances along with them, no longer holding herself to the second-best status that thanos forced on her, instead at home as a leader who can fight with her family without having to compete with them, and how she stills talks to gamora, who is able to accept that she once meant the world to the guardians, once spoke their language and joined in their hugs and was part of their fun, but that she doesn't owe it to them to join in the dance and be that same person, and returns to the adoptive family that she feels at home with, and the lyric "leave all your love and your longing behind / you can't carry it with you if you want to survive," and how in order to go forward the guardians can't all stay together, but how that doesn't mean they aren't still a team and a family because how do you truly leave the people who have dragged you, doubting and kicking and screaming, toward comfort and security and happiness? for the hottest, slowest, laziest days to end, the ones where you lost best friends and spouses and children and siblings and years of your life and memories with someone, the ones where you run from your past and pretend you were never in pain, never loved anyone, you have to let that hope catch up with you (“happiness hit her / like a bullet in the back”). anyway i think this was a pretty good series like this post if you also had a laugh or two over cosmo the space dog's telekinetic hijinks!!

hate when a slightly older songs I like becomes popular from a cringe piece of media.
like, I'm okay with songs I grew up with becoming popular again. I think that everyone should be able to enjoy 90s and 00s songs. whether it's for the first time, or the millionth.
but when people only like a song because it was in a marvel movie, and for no other reason at all, that's when I gatekeep stuff. you don't actually like the song. you just heard it while seeing Steve Smuglo the capitalism superhero beat up aliens or peaceful protesters in a marvel movie, and now you only associate that song with him.
I'm not trying to be a hipster or annoying asshole saying "I liked this song before it was popular" because that's not true. the song already was popular. that's why I liked it. but now that it's in a marvel movie, everyone on the planet will associate it with Steve Smuglo for the next decade, and I can't listen to it without people assuming I'm a marvel fan.

I JUUJHST NOTICED THE KEYWORD ‘RUN’ THROUGHOUT ROCKET’S ARC IN VOLUME 3 WHY AM I ONLY SEEING IT NOW I AM NOT OKAY
the first scene where he’s listening to creep parallels with the his last scene with dog days are over and the word ‘run’ in these two songs are emphasized but mean different things...
first one means run as in run away
last one means run and free yourself from trauma
and then there’s “I’m done running” in between
Beloved raccoon... the story’s been yours all along......

the lyric “happiness hit her like a bullet in the back” is so freakin genius I could go on forever about it. there’s so many layers.
firstly, the happiness. a SURPRISE. we’ve spent the whole song talking about how she is evading happiness, and how she’s running from things, but this happiness surprised her! it wasn’t supposed to happen, but she is happy that it did, even if it was unexpected.
then of course, the fact that it was in the back. this happiness wasn’t supposed to happen. it was a betrayal, a fluke, something born from something ugly then turned into something happy, which ties back to the surprise part.
and this might seem inconsequential, but the fact it was a BULLET. the bullet hit her in the back. it was a duel she was in, a constant struggle, and her opponent betrayed her and killed her illegally, bringing her surprising happiness. there are so many ways to interpret this, for example the idea of letting go of something hurting and feeling like it was a betrayal but ultimately being necessary and for the better, but my favorite is;
the idea her outrunning things has finally caught up to her, and it has shot her in the back. it made it so she can’t outrun things, betraying a constant part of herself, yet she finds out she’s happier when she doesn’t, even though she wasn’t supposed to. that way it can tie in with the rest of the idea. that, and the title and lyric “Dog Days Are Over” suggests the idea that things are ending, and what better to end than the self-sabotaging thing?
I also want to look at the first lyric like this, “Happiness hit her like a train on the track. Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back.”
This implies something more reckless, more accidental, and yet more purposeful. She’s standing on a track, and a train hits her. But that happiness that just hit her is messy and accidental and she had no choice but to let it come to her.
Compared to the second one, the one that I mentioned first, this happiness if done by somebody. Somebody mentioned in the next line, “struck from a great height, by someone who should have known better and didn’t.”
This somebody knew her reckless past with happiness. It knew that it came suddenly for her and left easily, too, and that she also left it (the running thing). This person should have known not to give it to her, but they had to. So they betrayed her. This ended the Dog Days, or her running days. this opponent that I mentioned earlier in the duel (the struggle) is still trying to help, but she can’t see that. she wants to run but she can’t.
also, the whole “run fast for (people)” could mean that she thinks she has to run to protect everyone else, and this mysterious person wants to show her she doesn’t have to but can’t find a better way. Then the whole “can you hear the horses, cause here they come,” might mean that the horses (what she’s running from, her past/happiness) are going to come now too, now that she’s staying. She’s warning him.
Also, because this is turning into a whole song thing, the bridge. Or what I think is the bridge. “And I never wanted anything from you, except everything you had and what was left after that too,” this being before the bullet thing shows that she was aware of her self-sabotaging ways, and wanted to take them from the person. She knew what she had done to others and couldn’t let that happen to her.
She didn’t need to take, she needed to be given to.
Anywho yeah, Dog Days Are Over is one of my favorite Florence + The Machine songs even if it is popular. It’s so good and for someone who loves doing deep dives on things it’s a jackpot. So are a lot of her songs, actually.
Let me know if you ever want more!

top 5 dog motif songs?
pausing mid dog motif breakdown to look at this ask. eye twitching. curiosity piqued. okay yeah okkay
i'm your man by mitski. lol. lmao even. the entire song. most dog motif song of all time ever
dogbird by madds buckley. DOG AND BIRD MOTIF AT ONCE. the dabihawks anthem to the enlightened mind. i can't stand you in my bed, you're too gentle. i need you to hurt me back instead.
i'd hate me too by susannah joffe. JUST RELEASED AND IM SO INSANE ABOUT IT. i couldn't run to you so i'd bite til you shoot me dead, i am a coward but first i was a kid.
dog teeth by nicole dollanganger. i like this one bc it's from the pov of being the one loved BY the dog motif character, not from the pov of the dog motif character, and it shows how negative that behaviour can really be. he handed me a pair of pliers and he told me to pull out his teeth, because as long as he had them he'd use them to do bad things.
tongues & teeth by the crane wives. not explicitely dog motif in fact dogs aren't mentioned AT ALL, but it is to me. self-destructive behaviour, teeth, lashing out etc. intricate rituals. i've grown a mouth so sharp and cruel it's all that i can give to you, my dear, and when you come in quick to steal a kiss my teeth will only cut your lips, my dear.
i have a dog motif playlist if ur interested in more recs x
