last art for the year! might as well be spiderverse :] i’ve always liked that meaningful high five with that “take it from here”/”passing on to the next gen” message, sooo here’s peter and miles🌻
and with that said, happy new year everybody! 🎊🍾🎆 let’s make this a good one~

This is for my Linguistics Class Final!
I really love these movies! These aren't critiques-> just observations. Also i use AAVE/Ebonics interchangeably.
the art you see is made by me! Either drawings directly from a ref pic/ screenshot from the movie or just good ole drawin’
script under the cut!
1- the introduction slide says ‘Language Usage in Black Panther and Spiderman into the Spiderverse -- specifically AAVE/Ebonics. The meme says ‘Movies that use AAVE/Ebonics // Me, a studying anthropologist learning about language usage.
2 // First and foremost there is a hierarchy of languages, but instead of Standardized English being at the top of the ladder like it is normally, there is Xhosa – and actual African Language – that is spoken by the main characters/ royalty of the movie. Next is Standardized English, which is spoken by everyone given the context. And Finally we have AAVE/Ebonics which is only spoken by Erik and his father and Ziri (who were only pretending to be African American as spies)
3// Erik/ Killmonger/  N’Jaka actually speaks all three dialects throughout the movie. The most notable incident is during the Throne Room Scene.
-          He starts off in Standardized English but quickly slips into AAVE when he feels comfortable/ cocky.
-          It is only when he starts speaking Xhosa do the court start to take him seriously
-          Side note- Erik knows Xhosa beyond the dictionary learning, he knows how to introduce himself.
4// Titles, during the throne room scene he calls Queen Mother ‘Autie’ and Shuri ‘Princess’ even though these are their titles/ relations – and in some cultures calling an older woman ‘autie’ is a sign of respect’ because he speaks in an AAVE accent- it is seen as a disrespect
So he does everything technically right, but because he has a different accent, he is understood as disrespectful and in the wrong.
5// Erik is not seen as a proper opponent until T’Challa calls him by is Wakandan name – N’Jaka
6// Spiderman into the spiderverse –
7// Miles uses standardized English and Spanish when he’s a home
And AAVE when he’s with his peers on the school ground (and not when he goes to vision academy)
As well as with Aaron, which is were we see AAVE used the most often – because Aaron speaks it the most
8// the AAVE is ‘watered down’ And most characters use at lease  ‘imma’ ‘wanna’ etc. However this is new York, so this is kinda strange.
9// comparing both.
Both movies use AAVE for villains
and to show ‘cool, cocky and confident’ -> a stereotype for AAVE
10 //and both are used to pull on the audiences (at least American audiences) sense of familiarity
-          In BP many people leaned more towards Erik and his view even though we knew that we were supposed to support the Hero because Erik spoke with a framiliar accent and dialect and spoke of actual history, while Wakanda is entirely made up (the language is real, but it is more unfamiliar to American Audiences) leading Erik to be a good, convincing Villain for the movie.
-          SMitSV AAVE is used to show comfort and helps the audience feel what Miles is feeling. Intensifying how he feels when he’s uncomfortable at his new school and how comfortable with being spiderman at the end of the movie.
