the changes to Gabe turning to stone was such a good choice because it changed from an intentional thing on Percy & Sally's part to the consequences of Gabe's actions for not respecting Percy & Sally's boundaries and I think that suits this portrayal of Gabe much better

Percy genuinely believed that Sally was trying to get rid of him by sending him to all those schools. He was so hurt when she instantly said no to homeschooling, cause all he ever wanted was to be with her.
But in the flashback we see why that hurts Sally so much. Because all of this, all the schools, and the shitty step-dad, and the stories, and the lying when necessary, and the yelling and the crying and the stress, all of this was SO SHE COULD KEEP HIM.
Because baby Percy has no idea that there is a place, a perfect place, with people just like him, with people who would help and understand him. A place where baby annabeth may have only just arrived.
Sally could have taken him to camp instantly. Even as a baby. She was only 19!!! She could've taken him to camp in that flashback, when he was like 9, she could've lived her 30s as a single young woman starting her candy business. But she put herself through so much, and Percy through so much, because she knew that there is no place more perfect than home.
And she did what it took to keep her baby home and safe, with his mom.

Saw someone saying Percy believed Dionysus that he's his father at first 'cause because of Gabe he thought that's Sally's type and I can't stop thinking about it...

I really believe that Poseidon perfectly timed the package being at the door when Gabe arrived because he knew that smelly lil rat of a man would rip into what wasn’t his and also because the thought of this becoming canon makes me sleep better at night.

Something I’ve seen people criticise about the Percy Jackson tv show so far (including myself tbh) was that Gabe wasn’t as bad as he was in the books and they’ve “toned down” his abuse. He isn’t physically abusive like in the books, he never actually hit Percy but it’s implied that he does hurt Sally when Percy’s at boarding school, and I’m sure this was to make the show more child-friendly but I don’t think Gabe is “just an asshole” now. I think they just changed the kind of abuse he does. This might also be the reason Sally is less passive and stand up to him more (but we know she has stood up to Gabe at least once in the book).
Gabe is emotionally and financially abusive. We don’t know much since he wasn’t in much of the first episode (I’m assuming we’ll find out more as the show continues) but we do know that 1) he answers Sally’s phone + owns the car and 2) he doesn’t work but still gambles (like in the book, just online this time). Him answering Sally’s phone is a sign that he’s probably very controlling over her. This is added by the fact that despite her being the sole earner, Gabe owns the car.
The fact that Gabe doesn’t work (Percy says Sally is the only one employed) is a departure from the book where Gabe worked as a manager for an electronics store or something. This might signal financial abuse because he gambles Sally’s single income away. Gambling online might mean he gambles far larger amounts than he would with just his friends (like he does in the books) and on one income, that’s a big deal. There may only be enough money left to pay the bills and stuff or Sally has to work even more shifts to pay the bills because he gambles everything away. In the book, Sally works at a candy store at Grand Central and whilst we don’t know her job at this moment in the tv show, we can assume she works the same job meaning she’s got a low salary. This means Sally can’t afford to get away from him because he gambles all their money.
I’m sure we’ll learn more as the show continues but these are my thoughts about Gabe after thinking about his character for the past few days. I could be wildly wrong but for now, I feel confident in my opinions (mostly at least). I think some people forget we’re only 2 of 8 episodes into this season and so stuff that’s been left out so far could be revealed later and so judgements on character development and plot points should wait until later. There’s literally only 2 episodes so far.

*Disclaimer*
I like the new TV adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I’m not attacking anyone or hating on the writers. People are allowed to critique media they enjoy.
I’m not very happy with how Sally Jackson is portrayed in the flashback scenes. She seems less patient and more aggressive then how she was portrayed in the book series. Maybe I’m just being too sensitive as someone who grew up with an unkind mother, and used Sally Jackson as a source of comfort. Then on the flipside, Gabe is downplayed to be less cruel and aggressive than he was in the books. Maybe this is done for them to be more realistic characters??? (though abusive parents are unfortunately realistic and prevalent. This plot point in the series helped me cope with a lot as a child) Personally, I’m not understanding why this choice was made. Thoughts??

hot take, movie Gabe was better. I know this series is for kids, and disney wanted it to be less scary, but Gabe should've been more hateable.

when this happens, Percy, swearing by his mother's full name and the Virgin Mary, admits that he acted disgustingly. He is five years old, a useless piece of fat named Gabe, whom his mother dragged home for some reason, has been living with them for two years, when they seemingly go out together for the first time. The supermarket two blocks from their house. was completely out of groceries. Mom goes to the distant dairy department to get ice cream, Percy can still see the warm shine of her skin and black luxurious braids, Gabe is playing a slot machine, Percy clutches a teddy bear to his chest. A no longer young man in a uniform apron approaches them and looks at them with a cheerful smile, Percy does not like it. "What a charming boy," he says to Gabe, who finally broke away from the game, "You must be glad to have such a beautiful son, he looks like a real angel." Percy's abnormally fast brain understands everything faster than Gabe, his teddy bear flies to the floor, Percy looks at the old man with anger in his darkened eyes and growls. growls like an angry dog, and then starts screaming. These are not the best words spoken in Spanish and Percy has definitely damaged his vocal cords. Before Percy can rush into a fight and hit this stupid old man, his mom arrives, she picks him up in her arms and hugs him, whispering soothing words to him in Spanish. Their language. He is his mother's son, please finally understand and accept this. in the end, they leave without groceries, Mom pours out convincing apologies, Gabe looks at Percy like a piece of dirt. Percy is seething with a bubbly mixture of anger, disgust and horror. All he knows is that his father is white and because of this, people don't consider him their mother's son. Percy is starting to hate it.
this refers to the topic of "mixed Latino Percy Jackson". This is a description of a situation where Percy was mistaken for Gabe's biological son, because Percy looks completely white, and Gabe is a white man - anon.
Oh this was a tough read…

Pjo fans saying as a theme of posts 'what a tragedy is that Percy couldn't save Luke😭' now is so fucking sick and highkey twisted.'Couldn't save him'?Since when is the job of kids to save adults from their own trauma instead of the other way around?I mean Percy did that just fine!He saved Nico,he saved Hazel,he saved all the CHB kids by sticking around to care for them even if he's not a year rounder and he's been saving people his whole life by being a bully beater who encourages victims to love themselves for being weird and nobody saved PERCY then. No,Sally dosen't count, because the bullying and Smelly Gabe's at home abuse still happened with her around and that's not her fault or a flaw on her part,it's the system's and Gabe's and DID do her best for him and he correctly thinks she IS the best for it so he grew up to be seen as the best his found siblings and pseudo-kids too and they're all also correct
And right, tell me what Luke did for Percy to even make him want to save him to begin with?Their entire dynamic was gaslighting and child grooming to leave Percy all alone with a crime he didn't commit to the gods,Luke loud and proud announced that in the TLT finale while being a grown ass 19 year old traumadumping to his 12 year old summer camp 'friend'.Even they really WERE friends,it still should've been Luke to save Percy, just like it's MY job as an adult to save my actual friends who're kids from what's been done to them by their abusers and i'm happy to because i genuinely love them as people and see them as my younger siblings as much as i do my bio ones, who i've also helped grow up with self-worth and defense mechanisms against shitty people.I'm an eldest,it's in me to and i'm more like Percy than Luke could ever be so stick to your lil oink oink child military creating in his 20s minor-coded sellout and leave Percy out of it so he can move on with his life since Luke was the one who ruined it to begin with and kept forcing it onto him, alright besties?I have links to actual anti-fascist tactics and history instead of just Karl Marx memes if you feel like reading them to put on a break on the 'dark smut' too💕
