Overworked and Underpaid

Chapter Twenty Five: Nightshift

Hard sheets of rain hammered your windshield as you pulled into the parking lot of the warehouse. Shutting off your car you slumped back against your seat and heaved a heavy sigh, giving yourself pause to savor the moment’s peace and listen to the storm raging around you.

In just under two weeks your company had lost about a quarter of its employees due to the excessive amount of labor they were expected to do. The sudden dip in numbers meant anyone left over had even more tasks piled atop their already massive workload and could expect to stay well past two in the morning. It was taking a noticeable toll on everyone.

Today was your last day of consecutive work before a blissful two day reprieve. You wanted nothing more than to get it over and done with; the constant work had left your brain fried and muscles aching, your body was reaching its limit. The silver lining was that after another week or so of this you could quit and this whole mess would be over and done with. Using that thought to muster the strength necessary you forced yourself out of your car and began the lonely walk across the parking lot to the front door.

“Y/n!” Your boss greeted you jovially as you entered, “It’s so great to see you! Your co-workers and I were beginning to get worried.”

You looked around confused at the three men shuffling awkwardly next to your boss. Izuku and Shoto both shot apologetic glances your way while Katsuki’s scowl only deepened. None of them said anything to help elaborate.

“Oh uh,” you stammered, “Sorry to keep you waiting I suppose? Is something wrong?” Your boss waved the question off, “No no! It’s nothing bad, in fact it’s good news! I’m giving you four a short shift today! Just six hours or so I think should do the trick. I was just talking to your friends about it.”

Again you looked over at the three men next to your boss and again none of them spoke. Your stomach was starting to twist into anxious knots. “Okay…” you said slowly, “but what’s the catch?” “Ever the clever one,” Your boss beamed, “Can’t slip anything by you eh? The catch is that the shift is tonight, starting around ten. I assume that’ll work fine with all of you?”

“Oh! That’s-” but he cut you off with another dismissive wave of his hand. His eyes met yours and the look on his face was hard and impassable.

“I look forward to seeing all four of you back here at ten!” He said jovially, “Don’t be late!”

And before you could say anything else he was gone, leaving the four of you exchanging nervous glances in the entryway.

You returned to the factory hours later, long after the sun had set and the cold darkness of an autumn night lay heavy over the parking lot. It was eerie being here with so few other cars, the flickering street lights not helping quell your anxieties.

You’d texted Izuku, Shoto, and Katsuki after you’d gotten home, and they agreed that tonight was the night you cut and run from this job. The excessive hours paired with a mandatory night shift made for the perfect cover and there would never be a better time to quit than this. Just six hours and you’d be free of this place for good.

You headed inside for the second time tonight and made a beeline for your station. Having been the first to get here you were alone as you walked down the desolate concrete hallways, footsteps echoing down the dark corridors of the faculty.

When you arrived at your station you found a small note detailing your tasks for the night. It was unusually light and you, for a brief moment, felt a small ball of joy erupt in your stomach and warm your body. It wouldn’t take six hours to finish this, you were sure of that, and once you were done you could leave your letter of resignation at your station. Proper channels and notices be damned.

You were so focused on your work that you didn’t notice Izuku, Shoto, or Katsuki arrive until they greeted you. You mumbled a greeting back, a bit more standoffish than you’d usually be with them. They didn’t seem to mind, in fact they also seemed to want to get their tasks over and done with as soon as possible. You could all talk to one another once this was over.

The four of you worked in silence, nothing but the whirring of machines and the light tinkle of music coming from Shoto’s headphones could be heard. The night wore on, and you weren’t sure when exactly Shoto or Katsuki had left but eventually it was just you and Izuku working together, standing at opposite stations engrossed in your responsibilities.

No more than two or three hours had passed before you were interrupted by a large hand gripping your shoulder. You started and dropped the package you’d been taping up, it fell to the ground with such a loud shatter that you’re sure whatever was in there had broken. With a grimace you looked up into the face of a man you’d never seen before. He was large, bald, and dressed head to toe in black, his face was heavily scarred and he wore sunglasses to cover his eyes. You opened your mouth to speak and was cut off before you could get a word out.

“Boss wants to see the both of you, now” his voice was gruff and hard and left no room for argument. You looked at Izuku, his expression was blank but all color had left his face. He nodded once and moved around the table to your station, gripping your hand in his so hard you thought it might break. You tried to push the rising sense of dread down as you both followed the man down the long hallway to the office.

The man, however, didn’t turn left to take you upstairs to the boss's main office. Instead he turned right and walked down a flight of stairs. You hesitated, you knew that specific flight of stairs led to the old office your boss used temporarily while his was being de-sanded after the fiasco last year. Izuku’s grip on your hand tightened as you slowly followed the man down the stairs, past the electric box, and to the old rickety door of the secondary office.

As you pushed the door open and stepped inside you were hit with a strong, musty, slightly familiar scent that you couldn’t place. As soon as you were far enough into the room the man closed the door with a harsh snap and stepped in front of it. You were sure you heard the soft click of a lock.

Panic was beginning to rise in your chest now but you kept a straight face as you approached the solitary desk in the room. Your boss sat with his hands on the desk, fingers laced together, watching you approach. The room was lit with a single floor lamp that was only bright enough to illuminate the desk and the two chairs that sat before it. You wanted so desperately to turn and run, but you knew the time for that had come and gone, you had to face this now.

Izuku let your hand fall from his as each of you took a seat. Your boss stared at you silently for a hard moment before giving you a wry smile.

“Thank you both for coming down here on such short notice,” He said, “I regret having to interrupt your work and bring you both down here but…this matter couldn’t be attended to any later. I hope you’ll both understand.”

You nodded solemnly but said nothing. A hard ball of dread had settled in the pit of your stomach and you were desperately trying to think of a way out of this.

Your boss looked between the two of you and heaved a heavy sigh.

“I’ll cut to the chase,” he said curtly, “We know it was you.”

You felt your whole body run cold and saw Izuku stiffen out of the corner of your eye. You wanted to deny it, to scream that whatever it was he was on about had nothing to do with you, to say anything at all to convince him it didn’t have to be this way…but your head was spinning and your mouth was too dry to form words. You couldn’t get a coherent thought to form in your head let alone to voice one. It didn’t matter, your boss didn’t wait for a reply.

“It’s unfortunate,” he continued, pushing himself back from the desk, “I genuinely enjoyed your company, Y/n. Enjoyed Monoma’s company too, come to think of it. But you’ve seen too much, you’re too involved now…”

He stood up and opened his desk drawer, you heard something click.

“I’ll make this quick,” he said, “I don’t want you to suffer. Even if I did, I don't have a lot of time. Bakugou and Todoroki should be waiting for me at the main office by now. Lord knows I can’t bring them in here after this.”

The world spun around you as your boss straightened up, gun in hand. This was it, all your careful moves and planning, all the secrets you held with you, were about to be blown out the back of your skull with the last of your thoughts.

The ringing in your ears drowned out what your boss said as he raised the gun to your face. Staring down the barrel of the gun you could do nothing but shut your eyes and wait for it to end…

And then the wall behind you exploded.
