Best Books Read in January 2023
I was incredibly lucky this year to read some absolutely amazing books and while I will probably do a top five of the year, there are so many good book I would be skipping over that I am going to try and make a post for the top 3-5 I read each month (it was a big reading year lol)
This post will cover January, which kicked everything off with a bang!!
Kindred by Octavia Butler
This was my first Octavia Butler book and it blew my mind. It is about a woman from the 1970s who travels to the 1800s, on the plantation of her ancestors. A difficult and rewarding read that commands respect and asks harrowing questions.
Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn
The sequel to Legendborn that makes me remember how much I love these big, epic YA fantasies. Deonn creates a loveable found family with vibrant dynamics that I crave more content for. Her commentary on grief and institutional racism are eye opening and heartbreaking. A worthy sequel that has me begging for the third!
Sisters of the Neversea by Cynthia Leitich Smith
I have come to love response literature, and this book is a prime example of using a secondary text to analyze the original within a novel. The way Smith approaches the sexism and racism of Peter Pan is really powerful. Truly an example of how middle grade books can be just as smart as adult books.
Honorable Mentions:
Seven Days in June by Tia Williams
A romance between two writers that subverts many tropes. Some of the best chemistry I have seen on page!!
Sorry, Bro by Taleen Voskuni
I've never read a book with an Armenian protagonist and so this was very special to me for that reason.

Captain Hook Villain Backstory
James Hook is his real name in this, different then Barrie's Hook who was named something before but so much of Disney's Peter Pan/Neverland stuff is different then Barries so I don't feel too bad changing it
Alot of this stuff is taken from backstory elements given to him in the "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" show, which I'm going to say has been 'filtered' to retell to children and contained a lot more actual peril and such in the Real Events which 'inspired' the show
James  was raised by his mother Dorothea and her first mate Nell,  and spent his childhood in the Seas of the EverRealm, including the NeverSea, which contains the Neverland Archipelago which sits at the fuzzy border of the EverRealm and Our World
It was during this time that he learned to speak the  language of the Neverland fairies
But he was rather dismal at pirating, and so as a boy was sent back into Our World to attend Eton under the care of his mother's sister, Emily--both his mother and Nell had sailed out of Our World (after starting as a lady and her maid fleeing the lady’s cruel husband with baby Hook on the way) aboard a washtub turned escape vessel and had originally hailed from England before turning pirates
Tumblr media
Turns out that he just needed to get out from under his famous mother's shadow. Hook flourished at Eton, becoming a member of the esteemed Eton Society even, and became a source of pride and terror to the school, hailed later as a "Great Etonion, if not a good one"
Eventually though he tired of academic life and set out once more to sea, undertaking his childhood occupation once more with considerably more skill and cunning. No doubt learned while destroying his opponents on the playing fields.
Despite his new vigor however, becoming captain of his own ship at the age of 18 due to his prowess, he  lost his first crew during an unfortunate incident involving blue pixie dust, which left him with a vendetta against the inhabitants of Neverland
He was rescued from a watery grave in the NeverSea by one William Smee, who worked aboard the vessel under the dreaded(and likely Cursed to still be about and buckeenering at this time) Captain Blackbeard. Hook quickly moved through the ranks of the ship becoming Blackbeard's bosun, before overthrowing and marooning the infamous pirate and those loyal to him, and forming a new crew, renaming the ship The Jolly Rodger
Hook sailed about for several years pirating across the Everrealm and dipping into Our World before returning to Neverland to cause some trouble for the fairies of Pixie Hallow--and finding himself sans one hand thanks to the fairies new charge and protector, one Peter Pan
Hook then spent years in Neverland trying to get revenge on Pan before being chased out to the Outer Islands of the Neverland Archipelago, where, having lost his crew apart from the ever loyal Mr. Smee and two musically inclined though rather dim crewmates, he was forced to eek out an existence trying to rebuild his reputation. All while running afoul of another young boy and his friends who'd been placed there by Pan to protect the Outer Islands
Eventually Hook was able to regain his prestige and his crew (though neither where what they once were) and set about attempting to gain revenge on Pan once more, though this time he tried to do so through kidnapping Pan's beloved Wendy Darling-though he actually got her daughter Jane, as he was unaware how much time had passed in Our World
Stuff that brings in my Canon Descendants characters:
Tumblr media
After this latest defeat at the hands of children Hook finally decided to try settling down, and for some years lived peaceably enough with his long admired lady, the piratess Red Jessica. Despite Hook's dislike of children the pair even had three of their own together, and Hook came to care for them in a degree his own way, though he was never a very good father
Eventually though the couple split and Hook returned to his own pirating, determined as ever to gain his revenge on Peter Pan.

Renia loves her family so much that she is willing to put her life in danger for them. She doesn't care if she gets hurt; all that matters is that her brother and father are safe. She aspires to be a captain who lifts her crew members rather than leaving them behind.
Tumblr media
Qasim Ramsey
Gender: Male
Age: 10
Talents: Memorizing maps from the top of his head
Hobby: Writing stories
~~~Basic Info~~~
Height: 139 cm (4’7)
Eye Color: Ebony
I want my stories to take you to another world!
An aspiring writer who wants to travel the seven seas and document all of his findings for others to see including his loved ones. Qasim is a very quiet child who rarely speaks; the only time he becomes a chatterbox is when one of his favorite authors or books is mentioned. He always appreciates it when his sister compliments his work, and she even reads it when she needs a bedtime story. Qasim is overjoyed that his biggest fan is none other than his own family.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And that’s Kai’s siblings!
Also if you’re wondering why they both have a sailor suit, I imagined that Kai’s father is a fisherman who sells his wares to people in the Neverseas. So I thought it would be pretty cute if Renia & Qasim helped out their dad in cute little sailor outfits!
Listen, it sounded adorable in my mind…
ANYWAYS! I’m thinking about drawing Kai’s dad after this or…just start on Kei’s parents…it’s very tempting.

@emcads
A CAPTAIN'S JOB WAS TO PUT THEIR CREW,  their ship,  before all else,  and there lay a special sort of burden helming a crew such as this one  ––  a collection of the vulnerable,  the world's  UNDER-LOVED AND THRICE-WRONGED,  with more reason to distrust the lot of humankind than love it.  she was as much captain as mother.  as sister.  as lover.  and it FELL TO HER to see them safe. SQUANDERING  that ... it was a mandate of heaven buried under the heel.  so she hadn't thought twice shouldering out in front of Jess to protect them.  ( not that they needed protecting.  but especially not the naturalist more than a foot taller,  ripping with EARNED MUSCLE and unafraid to show it  )  EL FLOR DE COHETES could wrench an assailant's jaw from their skull if asked for,  and blow the lot of them   to Fiddler's Green and  BEYOND.
but not this.   the captain could make out hints of their  WRETCHED SUGGESTIONS  underneath the tavern's din.  she hoped Jess avoided the specifics,  for their own sake.
Tumblr media
❛❛     I don't see him.  if Giles thinks he can stand me up  in an establishment like this  ...   ❜❜
the captain's voice was level,  but her knuckles turned white on the pommel of her rapier,  itching for a fight ( and knowing better ).  it didn't soothe the rage,  though.  and it didn't dole those bastards out what they deserved:  no doubt Jess was only the LATEST  in a long line of crude comments and RUDER GESTURES,  and no one in their  GOD-FORSAKEN LIVES  had ever bothered to remind them  how preciously close they were to the judgement of their Maker.   if she hadn't had business tonight. if she had been alone,  without a crewmate to model her behavior for,  or had even a few glasses more to drink ...    her jaw set,  mouth tight in a thin line.  the likes of Charles Vane stirred up bar fights.  La Doña Pirata had a reputation to uphold.  at least,  for now.
❛❛    I won't keep you here,  Jess.   it's a pitiable crowd of men even without the god damn  WEASEL  in attendance.  you have my leave to go home if you'd prefer.   ❜❜
...wait...why were they were still laughing...?
Jess had snarled and turned her chest with balled fists, a clear sign of aggression and a threat but... nothing.  Then her captain ( their superior! ) had made a similar face and stance and possibly cursed them in their direction ( from what she could tell )... but still nothing.  Even with a threat, from a pirate and her captain, the men laughed and jeered and beckoned them closer with filthy fingers that writhed like worms for the taste of a lady’s skin.  They didn’t care of who was strong and who was weak, did they?  They didn’t abide by the same rules that Jess had always known true.  A superior made a posture of demanding respect and they really acted as if the two had blown them kisses...
Gods.  This was not the Neversea,                                      and this culture was not her own.
Time and time and time again Jess had witnessed this sort of thing happen from the day she first set foot here on the Mainland, but only now did it truly sink in at last.
She really had no power at all here.  They were just another girl.
Though her face kept its bared teeth, her furrowed brow began to crumble. Hands begrudgingly unraveled from fists to demurely clasp her bent elbows. Confusion and a pained acceptance diluted the rage into an irritation.  She was not as angry as she should have been, not as offended as she should have been, and knowing that should have just pissed her off more. But it didn’t.  It took the lewd irreverence of five vulturous men to render the stalwart guard dog into a helpless pinned butterfly.     Jess vibrated with a discomfort that smothered her lungs like cotton.  Her heart buzzed in her over stuffed chest and her spine rattled with a dull, alien dread behind her.  She could almost feel a sweaty hand snake around her waist again.  Anxiety bled into shame as she felt herself grow  self-defensive.  Her guts churned into knots as she could pitifully feel her arm lifting itself to actually wave hello at the louts.  Pathetic isn’t it?  To fawn instead of fight?  To let your body move without you?  To pretend you want what the world wants to save yourself the blame....
But thanks be to the Gods that Jessica was in the company of her Esme!  For from within her uncomfortable cocoon of overthinking she finally noticed that her captain was attempting to address her, and she yanked her own foolish arm down with contempt.
Tumblr media
“ Oh what?  Sorry,”  she snapped out of it, assuming for some anxious reason that the captain hadn’t heard her ( and overwhelmingly thankful for the safety she found in looking directly at her emboldened face. )
“ I said do ya think yer contact is here yet?  What’s he look like? ”

About the Piraticus leader: I would like to know a little more about him, his past, his parents, where he lives...
Conrad crash course!
Tumblr media
The current leader of Piraticus is Conrad Garfio.
Conrad was born... who knows! Like many kids he ended in the Neverseas left to his own devices. He was part of a group of lost kids, but a fight broke for something or other, and in the scuffle both Conrad and another kid fell down a mountain. Conrad lost his eye then.
Nanette was the oldest kid of their group, so they took Conrad to the pirate ship nearby since the adults had medicines. That's how both ended joining the pirates.
From then on Conrad grew up on the ship and learned the pirate trade. He also meet Smythe and Ruby and found books about the Captain of the Neverseas, falling in love with that idealised hero. Though, as it often happens in the Neverseas, his former captain refused to grow up and made for an awful authority figure. During this time Conrad had many adventures with the crew, and snuck out to have some of his own. On one of those he meet Krok.
As they grew up, Nanette tried to enter NRC to have their dreamed normal, peaceful life. That made Conrad curious over the school thought he had more pressing plans. Conrad led a mutiny and got rid of the old captain. He decided to make his own crew alongside Mr. Smythe, Ruby and Krok, and whoever came along the way.
Wondering about Nanette and NRC, he decided to try and enter the school and get sorted into Piraticus. Krok tagged along. And that started his first year in NRC, getting used to the life on solid ground. Already he was searching for valuable information and treasures. The dorm leader at the time wasn't up to the task, so Conrad had no trouble kicking his ass to take his place.
During that first year he meet Tink, and found him pretty fun to hang out with. After some bickering, both ended being friends when Conrad helped Tink out of a pinch. Conrad appointed him vice-leader for his skills and loyalty.
And then two years flew by!
Tumblr media
TL:DR
Where he was born or his blood family is a mystery.
Conrad grew up in the Neverseas with pirates. His family is chosen. Nanette is his oldest sibling, Ruby is his sister, Smythe is his best friend.
He currently lives in his own pirate ship in the Neverseas with his crew.

10 Magical Middle Grade Reads
[via Book Riot]
What is it about magic and middle grade books? Children at the age of the characters in these books are at their peak of childhood, on the brink of adolescence. They can still experience the wonder that they did when they were younger, without the cynicism that can accompany the teenage years. Many are finding new ways to be independent, taking on responsibilities, and beginning to learn who they really are.
All of these changes can make middle grade readers feel powerful. And at the root of magic is a desire to wield power. Magic aids in accomplishing so many things in these books. Taking care of loved ones. Standing up for what’s right. Being brave in the face of danger. Middle grade books with magical themes are literal magic, in a way.

☠ — VERSE: ON THE NEVERSEA
Tumblr media
credit where it is due, this is fully because i read about @damasfortuna‘s own neverland based verse and thought it would be a lot of fun for harry to be in his dad’s setting like this. it is not, however, directly linked to or dependent on marie’s own verse or canon. this isn’t too organized or thorough atm, but when am i ever?
– no isle of the lost we are on the sea! this verse would follow hook’s original canon more closely, with this man still somehow managing to rack up three kids. – so harry’s born, probably by two ill-timed visits to the same port ( say, about nine months apart ), and smee probably insists james keeps the baby. again. and he will do it once more when cj is born. – smee likely, for lack of a better term, acts as a nurse for the kids until they’re old enough to be taught and trained. the three of them, of course, excel at this. – harry, as hook’s only son, is seen as the one who will carry on the hook name and legacy, and harry, with no outside influence of uma or other kids around him, revels in this. – i won’t say he doesn’t know uma period in this verse, just not yet. – harry is as brilliant and as quick as ever, but this harry is a lot more ruthless, much more under the thumb of his father and his crew than he would have been on the isle, when he could spend time with other people or get away. he’s likely still abused ( which i will touch on in a moment ), still works his ass off constantly to prove himself to hook and to feel like he is enough and worthy. he is captain james hook’s son, through and through. –   while harry is still abused, i don’t think it would be as often as it would have been on the isle. harry’s abuse on the isle stemmed from hook feeling miserable for himself because he’s lost his glory and taking it out on the people around him. he hasn’t lost that in this verse, although he still hates kids and harry is still a brat, so rather than a constant minefield, i think harry’s abuse in this verse would more be out of punishment, or when hook is drunk and angry and harry’s in the wrong place at the wrong time. – while harry is his OWN INDIVIDUAL and VERY CAPABLE OF BEING INDEPENDENT, he still has a sense of wanting to please, and working very well under someone. unfortunately, he is working under hook now, rather than uma, so his desire to please now comes from a fear of the consequences of failing, rather than the satisfaction of making uma happy. – he still respects women, though. loves his sisters to death. i cannot stress that enough.

mid year book freakout tag
@wormwoodandhoney tagged me in this, inspired by booktube and book took! (tag created by earl grey books and chami)
1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2021: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. This book fully lived up to its hype. I enjoyed Crooked Kingdom as well, though mostly for the Wylan POV chapters and not nearly as much as the first book in the duology.
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021: Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix by Julie C. Dao. Everyone in the reviews on Goodreads and other websites seem to love Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, the first book in the Rise of the Empress duology, but it took me three tries to get through that one, it just dragged for me, though admittedly the second half picked up the pace and I enjoyed it much more. These reviewers tend to be down on the second book so maybe I just had lower expectations or maybe I just enjoyed it more since it was more of the actual Snow White retelling, but I enjoyed Kingdom way more than Forest!
3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to: Darling by K. Ancrum and Sisters of the Neversea by Cynthia Leitich Smith. I have both of these Peter Pan reimaginings on my shelf but haven’t read them yet!
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: Gilded by Marissa Meyer - though I must admit I’ve actually already read the ARC, and it is so good. Everything Marissa Meyer touches turns to gold (pun intended).
5. Biggest disappointment: The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember. Just didn’t really do it for me.
6. Biggest surprise: Grump by Liesl Shurtliff. I was a little reluctant to approach this middle grade retelling of Snow White, but I was delighted with some of the ways in interpreted the story and I ended up really liking it! I’ve also read Rump and Jack by Shurtliff this year and didn’t enjoy them quite as much, though Jack does some fun things with the story. The author has one more in this series called Red, and my sister says it’s very good so I do want to get that one in this year too!
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you): Hmmm, I don’t know if I could pick one. For the sake of not repeating anyone who has already appeared on this list, I’ll say C.J. Redwine. I’ve been wanting to read her Ravenspire series for a while now and I was surprised by how I felt about the books. I found that the one I was most anticipating, The Shadow Queen, fell a little flat for me, and the one I enjoyed the most, The Wish Granter, was one I wasn’t especially excited about going in.
8. Newest fictional crush: I don’t really get fictional crushes, but the closest character I’ve encountered to “my type” this year is Simon Snow from the Simon Snow trilogy by Rainbow Rowell.
9. Newest favorite character: Nina Zenik from Six of Crows! I love her, she’s such a refreshing character!
10. Book that made you cry: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz. I started crying for no real reason about a quarter of the way through this book and then just continued to weep continuously through the rest of it. It was so beautiful, and I can’t wait for the sequel to destroy me later this year.
11. Book that made you happy: Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I thought I knew how it would go, and I was delightfully surprised. Meyer’s characters are so enchanting, and her Wonderland feels like an extension of Carroll’s original world, instead of reinventing it like most people do these days.
12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought (or received) so far this year: Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Turner. I enjoyed this Peter Pan retelling, but there were some things I wish had been explored more. But the cover is so beautiful, it’s worth having on my shelf no matter what! I’d also add The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, that cover is gorgeous too.
13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year? In addition to Darling and Sisters of the Neversea, I want to read Cemetery Boys by Aiden Turner, Red by Liesl Shurtliff, Circe by Madeline Miller, The Wrath and the Dawn duology by Renee Ahdieh, and Dark Shimmer by Donna Jo Napoli. I have a long list of other books, but those are my priorities!
I tag anyone who wants to do it!

Quick Review: Sisters of the Neversea by Cynthia Leitich Smith
I read the book for class and will be recommending it from now on
Characters: We love characters with agency, and Lily and Wendy were both active protagonists. They were always trying to change their circumstances or planning. I found the majority of the side characters very interesting and dynamic as well.
Themes: The power of stories, and how there can be good and harm that comes from them. Smith addresses how racial stereotypes and gender roles affect people's thinking in a harmful way and how a story can also inspire someone to take action. And all the commentary on colonizing too. Fantastic execution of themes!! Smith doesn't shy away from tough conversations about Native people and the representation of Native people in stories.
Plot: The way Smith chose to interact with the plot and characters of the well worn story was so good. Everyone had more agency and depth than the Disney version I am familiar with. The end was a bit fast for me, but often is the case with middle grade.
Favorite quotes: "Wasn’t Story how humans defined themselves, how they connected, how they learned to care?"
Recommended to those who enjoy middle grade novels and retellings of classic tales!!

A smattering of random thoughts on upcoming releases:
Wow, I know a lot of these already!
Yes please, yes please, no thank you, yes please
Why didn't I know Cat Sebastian was publishing a new book?
A Peter Pan retelling from a female and Native American perspective? Yes please!
I have too many holds
Wow, this list is longer than I thought it would be
The synopsis of b.b. free reminds me of The Ballad of Ami Miles. Of course I want to read it so I can compare and contrast
Of course the library doesn't have b.b. free : (
why does the library never have Melissa Scott books?
New Ryan North graphic novel? Auto hold
Wait, why doesn't the library have Ryan North either???

Divided We Fall (OUAT - Peter Pan x Reader) Part 4
Requested by @ajakral
Synopsis: Who said there were no girls on Neverland? Who said Peter Pan ruled over this world on his own? On the other side of the island, far from the mermaid lagoon, the echo cave and the skull rock – that’s where (Y/N) and her girls lived. Because behind every great man there is an even greater woman, what would the king be without his queen?
A/N: Doesn’t star any OUAT characters apart from Pan, Felix and Wendy.
Word count: 2.4k
Part 3 <<< >>> Part 5
MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
“Up and in line everyone!” (Y/N) ordered and her girls stood in the usual order within seconds, dropping everything they were doing. In a single swift motion, she threw a thick wooden stick to one of the younger girls who fumbled a bit before catching it, out of surprise.
“You can't hesitate, if someone else than me throws something else at you, you need to catch it,” she said and paced in front of the girls. When she reached the same girl again, (Y/N) threw her elbow at her, aiming for the face but this time she caught it before it hit her. “Better,” (Y/N) congratulated her with a smirk.
It was still raining, they had just eaten a good meal, it was the exact opposite of what you called good fighting conditions. Perfect.
“These are the worst conditions you can find yourself in during a fight,” (Y/N) continued. “Pair up!”
In a common movement, all the Lost Girls moved to face up their partner. They paired up with girls of the same strength – (Y/N) shook her head.
“No, not like that. Mingle with the stronger ones, challenge yourself because there is no honor in winning against someone you know you can defeat.”
They changed partners and shared confused looks as they did so.
“Fight, and I want to see you use the elements to your advantage. It's raining, it's muddy, the sounds of nature cover anything else, use it.”
As soon as the words crossed her lips, the girls executed her orders. The smaller, weaker ones attacked first because that's what (Y/N) taught them to do – to strike before their adversary gets a chance to hit them. If you're smaller, it means you're faster. If you're bigger then you can knock your enemy out faster. Sybil and her cunning ways was the first to dive to the ground and swing her leg around to sweep the other girl off her feet and make her slip in the mud.
“Good Sybil! Everyone look at that! That's what I'm talking about. Don't be afraid to play dirty literally and figuratively, Neverland isn't a playground and next time a bunch of Lost Boys come here, I want you to make them eat the ground.”
She made the girls fight and fight and fight again, keeping up the rhythm until they were wetter from sweat than rain. They panted, covered in mud and blood, pointlessly trying to rub away the dirt with the back of their equally dirty hands while dodging blow after blow.
“What the hell is wrong with her?!” Sybil groaned in between a couple punches.
She ducked forward when Dorothy leaped toward her and tried to hit her shoulder. Sybil hurt her shoulder last month, everyone knew that. But it was fair game, she didn't hold grudge against her sister. It was a weakness and she exploited it, like (Y/N) had instructed.
“Shut up or you'll be on watch duty for the next two centuries,” Dorothy replied and attacked again. Her hair kept flying in her eyes and the rain made it stick to her forehead and momentarily blinded her.
“What is it with her today?! Why is she such a pain in the-”
“Sybil?” (Y/N) interrupted the girls' fight and grabbed the poor Sybil's arm. “Got something to say?”
“Yes!” She snapped, letting her emotions take precedence over her head and stepping closer to her leader instead of backing down like a wise person would have. “What's going on? Why are you venting on us? What's the deal with you today?!”
“My deal-” (Y/N) began, talking between her teeth and tightening her grip on Sybil who winced in pain. “-is my business. You stay quiet and do as I say, or you can run off into the jungle and throw your little pity party there. If you interrupt training once more, I'll personally see to your punishment.”
Sybil turned a few shades whiter and her pupils lost in size. Fear sizzled in the air as rain showered them.
“No dinner for you tonight. You're on first watch. Dorothy-” (Y/N) said and the girl's eyes moved from her friend to her leader. “-You pair up with Tina and teach her the basics again, she still can't throw a proper kick.”
She didn't say a word but moved over to where the young blond girl called Tina stood, with her arm hanging each side of her body, trembling in fear. The partner was already walking towards Sybil to face her new adversary.
“Congratulations everyone, you get two more hours of training and you can thank Sybil for that. I'm leaving but don't think for a second that I won't know it if you stop before I say it's over.” (Y/N) clapped her hands – the signal for the Lost Girls to resume their fighting. “If you're not too sore to move tomorrow, it means you did it wrong.”
*
“If every muscle in your body doesn't scream for you to stop then you haven't given it all yet,” Pan philosophized while circling around the heavy breathing girl at his feet. “Do better or die out there.”
“What's out there?” (Y/N) asked before rubbing the blood away from her split lip.
It didn't stop the bleeding though, and bruises were already forming here and there all over her body. She simply couldn't do it – what he asked of her was too much.
“Why, the world of course!” Pan said with a smirk. “If you're not tougher than the world, it'll kill you, don't you know?” He knelt down to be at eye level with (Y/N) and she had to refrain from spitting in his face. “Get on your feet little lamb, or the big bad wolf will get you.”
“Who's the big bad wolf in this dumb metaphor?” (Y/N) scoffed in disdain, blood dripping from her nose as she slowly stood up, along with Peter. “You?!” There was so much scorn in her voice that she couldn't even blame Pan for the following blow.
Her feet left the ground and (Y/N) immediately raised her hands before her face to protect herself and closed her eyes, ready to take the blow, get the air knocked out of her and to receive another bruise in some painful place. But it never came. (Y/N)'s jaw was still clenched in fear and anticipation when she dared open one eye to see what was happening and the only thing she saw was that Pan wasn't there anymore. Or rather, she wasn't with Pan anymore.
Not a second ago she was surrounded by trees and now she stood on the edge of a cliff by the sea. Neversea was a forbidden place – no Lost Boy was allowed to get in the dark waters. Most of the island was surrounded by sharp rocks anyway, there was only one sand beach, the rest of Neverland was as hostile as one would expect.
A series of sharp edged rocks led the way to the water several meters below. Despite the seemingly deadly territory she was in, the call of the void was strong. Tempting. It was mesmerizing, it sang to her and (Y/N) stepped forward against her best judgment.
“Hello?!” (Y/N) screamed out. Her voice echoed against the rocks but no one answered. “Where the hell am I now?” She wondered out loud.
There was still no answer but this time around she heard voices. She couldn't make out what they were saying but she wanted, needed to know and it somehow made her take another step towards the edge. The sound of the waves hitting the bottom the the cliff was loud and regular, it lulled her and covered the voices she tried to hard to decipher. Her feet moved as though thy had a will of their own. It felt a little wrong, (Y/N) wanted to fight against this invisible force that compelled her to move but this urge didn't take precedence over the need to find the source of the chants.
Where did it come from? Who was singing so beautifully? Whose void pierced through the mist of the sea? It was pure madness but her raised foot hovered over the void – there was no more ground to put her foot on but she couldn't stop moving forward, the wind pushed her from the back and the voices pulled her toward the sea.
“What are you doing, you foolish girl?!” A voice exclaimed from behind her, snapping (Y/N) out of her reverie.
She felt a tight grip on her upper arm and was abruptly pulled back on the land, away from an imminent death. It was like being ripped out of a stupidly vivid dream too fast and waking up feeling dizzy and lost.
“Pan?” (Y/N) asked confusedly. “Did you hear this?”
“Of course I did, everyone does. Don't listen to them, they'll lure you to a certain and painful death.”
This at least made her come back to her senses.
“What the hell was that? Get your hands off of me!”
“I just saved your life, I would advise you show a little gratefulness,” Peter scoffed and released her once he had dragged her far enough from the sea and its mysterious call. “It's not my touch that you should fear but the sirens. If they got their hands on you, you'd be a goner.”
“I'd rather throw myself off this cliff and get eaten by magical creatures than have your filthy hands touch me – and I already told you multiple times that I'm not scared of you.”
Peter dropped his hand and looked at her more intently, making her feel as though he was seeing right through her instead of at her. (Y/N) shivered of disgust and repressed the urge to rub away the feeling of his touch on her skin. He didn't believe her, that much was obvious, but she wouldn't contradict him again. If he wanted to underestimate her then so be it.
“You disappeared, well done,” he eventually congratulated her as though she accomplished some extraordinary deed.
It must have been pretty fantastic since he barely acknowledged her perseverance - if not skill - during their training sessions but suddenly complimented her.
“I didn't do it on purpose,” she said, chin still raised high. There was no point in trying to pass it as talent, she did it on accident and wouldn't be able to do it again if he asked her. “Where are we?”
“The mermaid lagoon,” he scoffed in a way that suggested that he hated this place. “Don't let the pretty name fool you, it's the most hellish part of this entire island. Mermaids will lure you to a certain death if you let your guard down for so much as a second.”
“While you're all rainbows and butterflies and do not threaten my life at all,” (Y/N) snickered sarcastically, earning a stern glare.
She expected Peter to physically punish her for this bold comment, to suspend her in the air, tackle her to the ground, or magically strangle her but he did none of it and simply turned around - trusting she would follow him and not be stupid enough to take a chance on the lagoon. It was a tough choice for her nonetheless and (Y/N) seriously considered running in any other direction than the one Peter was. Thoughts ran wild in her head for a second, but she just literally vanished in thin air before his eyes and he still managed to find her, so how could she even hope to escape by foot?
“Move!” He barked at her form a fair distance. “Training's far from being over, I see you still have some fight in you so you go back at it until you're too tired to insult me.”
(Y/N) thought that she'd have to be dead for that to happen, but she still obliged and silently followed his steps through the thick greenery of Neverland.
*
At the end of the day, Peter couldn't simply isolate himself from his Lost Boys endlessly and he had to return to camp after a few more hours of sulking at his thinking tree. Even he couldn't call it anything but sulking. Denying this to himself was pointless and he was in his damn right to act like a child if he wanted to – he was the ultimate forever child, who could blame him for acting like one?
“Shadow,” Peter called from the top branch of his tree, high enough to give him a view of the creek and Skull Rock.
It appeared almost right away, as though it constantly lurked in the dark, waiting for its master to whistle. For this alone Peter despised it but he couldn't deny how useful it was. It complete missions like no Lost Boy ever did. The only person who ever came close to this was (Y/N) – that is, until she turned against Peter. Felix could rot in his tree for all Peter cared, he was a poor second in command most of the time, but still the most capable of the Boys. It really spoke volumes about the state of Pan's little army. Pitiful.
The Shadow floats in the air before Peter, blocking his view and waiting orders like the perfect silent soldier. Peter often thought that if the Shadow could talk it would quickly go from his favorite to least favorite minion.
“What's she doing?” He asked in a flat voice – he didn't know why he felt so compelled to fake detachment when he spoke to the Shadow, but he did it. All the time. There was no other way he knew of to deal with the jumble of emotions he felt.
The Shadow shook its faceless head in defeat. Peter had grown to learn how to interpret the Shadow's body language. The Lost Girls' camp was sizzling with tension today, probably like his own camp. (Y/N) was a mess of wild emotions she refused to deal with, and she let out the steam by giving the rough side of the hand to her girls. He sighed deeply. As soon as he raised a hand toward the sky and flicked his wrist, the rain stopped. Peter rarely changed the weather the way he just did, but he knew that (Y/N)'s mood wouldn't improve as long as the storm went on.
“You won't be giving her the usual flower, today I need you to do something else for me...”
A/N: I know I take fucking forever to update, thanks for bearing with me y’all, you’re the best!

— HISTORY  — Under the sea, there's a world no one's yet to fully discover. While rumors of a city of gold and vast technological exist its people aren't quite people anymore. Atlantis has gone down in the history books as the city that sunk. But what the surface dwellers always seem to forget is that city didn't just vanish. It adapted and the past was forgotten. Mermaids, sirens and mermen, the terms are vast and wide but one thing is for certain life it better down where it's wetter. Or so they thought. As one of King Trident's daughter, Ariel was adventurous and troublesome. She dreamed of far off places and thing-a-ma-bobs and dinglehoppers. A human world she yearned to know but was forbidden to learn about. Many who tell her tale tend to romanticize the whole ordeal, but when she tells it the details get clearer. She fell in love with a human  And love makes people do silly things.  But Ariel wanted more than just love, as in most things she wanted to know. She wanted to walk with the humans, to dance to touch fire and see if it whats-the-word oh burn. But humans had something she didn't. Souls. And she wanted to know what it was like, what they did how they were tied. So she struck a deal with her aunt the Sea Witch.Little did she know her aunt had her own plans as well as a lesson for Ariel to learn. She was given legs but at a price. Without her voice, Ariel was forced to improvise and try to show her aunt that the man she loved did, in fact, love her enough to share his soul. With a short three day time frame the odds were stacked against her but she managed. Until it seemed that hope had been lost. Her prince was set to marry another. Heartbroken and devasted, Ariel's once pure heart warped and twisted. She knew the price of failure was to be seafoam or death to the Prince, but even in her youth Ariel was stubborn as they get.
But that only grew when it was clear that happy ever after was just within reach the Oppunger attacked. Ariel seeing the power and ultimate end for the Prince sacrificed herself for her love. Enslaving herself as a spy for the Oppunger, Ariel spared her world and his kingdom. And people said mermaids didn't have a soul. But the price was steep and a seed of darkness festered into something. Working for the Oppunger Ariel never stopped dreaming of being reunited with her Price or her sisters. And when the opportunity presented itself she took it. Fin and all, Ariel found herself a portal into the mundane world and took it. A real fish out of the water, Ariel stumbled upon the fable community. Still getting her sea legs, Ariel agreed to be a clerk at the NeverSea Antique shop but all the while she has her own plans. If she could just get her prince to fall in love with her maybe just maybe she can have that happy ever after. But the cheerful girl everyone knows, she's been changed and she'll stop at nothing to get her happy ever after that was robbed of her. The Community is only an obstacle for the girl but for now, it's home.
