Mindfront: A term for plurals, derivative of "mindform", denoting a system member's status as "in front" within the mind/their mental form, but not necessarily externally, bodily fronting. Many subsystems share a mental form or other inherent connection, and switch between whom is most aware in that subsystem without any effect on bodily front. This is intended for these members and any others that could utilize the concept of "fronting within the mind/headspace".

ex. A system consists of Host A and Subsystem B, with two members. Host A is in front, and Subsystem B is in headspace, with Subsystem member B1 doing things out of bodily front. B1 is mindfronting in their mental form. B1 encounters something their subsystem member enjoys within headspace, so member B2 switches to mindfront and continues headspace activities. Host A may or may not be aware of this; mindfronting generally has no inherent connection with bodily front.

Hi, I’ve got a question if you don’t mind answering

I’m just…. Really confused. Because our system has changed and grown so much that we realized that we were a polyfrag system since our experiences perfectly match it, but recently uh. Our gatekeeper found a whole like … sidesystem?? It’s the only term that makes sense because it’s completely separate from the “main” system even with layers and stuff it’s a whole other headspave I guess, and it turns out they have some pyramid heirarchy with themes for each tier and a lot more detail we don’t know about.

My partner got extremely concerned and told me to ask about this because … wtf there can’t be any possible way we’ve gone through ramcoa, it just doesn’t make sense ???? Like yeah I’m shaking as I type this but it doesn’t make sense we barely ‘unlocked’ past sa trauma and even then we doubt that (despite alter patterns)

I’ve got no idea what this is or who to ask since I’m not in any form of therapy and can’t get any professional help, thank you for your time in advance

Sidesystems

Sidesystems, as in separate group of alters or multiple systems in one body, can happen to anymany. If it’s more comfortable to explore without the fear of programming, that might be better for your system right now.

Programmed or Not

Anything that happens in programmed systems can happen in nonprogrammed systems. The only difference is external control, which leads to a higher concentration of less common features. The term sidesystem in programming means the same thing, but with external control.

Some symptoms are indicative of particular traumas; flashbacks of being drugged might come with body memories of that experience, clips of cloaks or butchered animals tend to belong to RA.

But even those can be explained away, psychosomatic presentations of passive influence or detailed descriptions and photos of events.

The structuring is unusual, but not impossible. The themes are the same. Memories will be your best indicator, but those will take time and trust to get to.

Support for Healing

You don’t necessarily need a therapist during the initial stages, but we would recommend a support friend or significant other who will learn alongside you and sit with you as you go.

It’s good to have a page of hotlines you can call, and on that list add safe people for unaware system members. Carrying a phone or keeping a calendar is also helpful. Some of the newly discovered ones may be less informed or have trauma surrounding particular dates.

Supporting Your System

If you are trusted with trauma details, you should do your best to sit with the keeper like your support people would for you. Educate yourself and provide care for them, keeping in mind you may be the first in a long time (or ever) to receive this knowledge.

Some common programming environments are high-control groups, and that can mean anything from a small cult meeting in a basement to a multinational trafficking ring. You don’t have to piece together any of that now, but you cannot perpetuate the cycle of shame on your systemmates.

No matter where you come from, abuse is awful. You might come up with recollections of forced perpetration or loss, and it is crucial that you remember it was not your fault. No one is responsible for the abuse done onto them.

You should take time to sort out your own feelings and work through the consequences of knowing. You should not be blaming anyone inside. You have the opportunity to give what these selves always needed and never got. Often, you’re giving love.

Healing Both

The basics of deprogramming are the same as healing from most maltreatment; getting through everything together. You all played a role in your survival, and now you have the chance to live.

So regardless of what this ends up being, try for compassion first. You might have more steps to take, but compassion comes first and last. You can do it. Living well takes practice, but I promise you can do it.

so the easiest way I can put it is that sub-systems are systems within a system, and side-systems are a completely different system in the same body.

example:

X is apart of The Phoenix Descent, but is also the host of the Y System. They're a part of a sub-system.

...

X is in the same body as Z, but is in a different system. Z is in The Phoenix Descent, but X is a part of the Y System. X is a part of a side-system.

am i the asshole for fakeclaiming a subsystem?

To start, we have cdid, and a lot of our headmates are part of subsystems, we very likely have sidesystems, and overall its a big mess. Recently a headmate of ours has been grappling with the fact that he might be a subsystem because of how he formed. (several fragments fused, which is how a lot of our "introjects" form) This doesn't really make sense to me. First off, he doesn't really show defining traits of being a subsystem, between the several fragments he has all their personality traits simultaneously, not switching visibly, no changes in personality, no outside changes in anything. When we cofront, he doesn't ever change, and when we have blurriness its just Him and whoever else, not a part of him and whoever else. I told him the truth, that it's very unlikely that he's a subsystem, that we would be able to tell if he was, etc. He, of course, didn't take that well. Now half of the system is on my ass about how it's not my place to decide that (it is, I am one of the alters who holds all the information about our system, which others don't believe (due to me also being one of our main protectors)) and that I have to apologize, which I did but I remained firm that he's not a subsystem. He literally just isn't. He feels like one because he's a fusion of several fragments, not because he is one, and to falsely put it to memory that he is a subsystem (just to appease him) would likely put us back further in our attempt at recovery & functional multiplicity.

As a polyfragmented system, it worries me to see people saying sidesystem is a RAMCOA only term, when polyfrag systems have been using the term for a good while now. We have sidesystems because we're polyfragmented, not because we went through RAMCOA, and it's weird to see people suddenly claiming something that's generally been seen as "our" thing (in the sense that it's typically polyfrag and other large systems who talk about it) is exclusive to a certain type of trauma. I think if you went into the history of "polyplex" as a term you may find more on this, as polyplex is typically used to describe all sidesystems, subsystems, and other members in a poly- system, but unfortunately I can't offer any direction on where to find that sort of thing.

I hadn't considered that, but that's gotta be difficult.

Actually, this is probably a group that's going to be affected most by this sort of gatekeeping. I've seen claims about this being a term that "endos" have "stolen," but to be honest, sidesystem seems way more common with other DID systems, and especially polyfragmented systems since they tend to be more complex in this sort of structure

sidesystems can show up for other reasons, but are fairly common in programmed systems because of the programming forcing a more separated section of the overall system for purposes of facilitating abuse that is then forgotten. it's not too much of a stretch to think the same thing could happen to somebody who coped poorly with non-RAMCOA abuse.

Ahh, I see. That kinda makes sense. I don’t know a lot about RAMCOA abuse but it seems that theres a big emphasis on secrecy, and I could see how non-RAMCOA abuse could also create something like that

Is the extra separation then what defines a sidesystem? Are there differences to it being a subsystem? Or maybe a redefinition of what a subsystem was thought to beeee?

I think that healing the system is less like just putting a jigsaw back together, and more like entirely creating a glass mosaic statue. It's because of how shattered we are. We were broken before we even had the chance to feel any sort of unity. We were turned against each other so quickly in foster care.

Nanny, our great-grandma, refined all the programming from the Pentecostals to be more like her beliefs (Seventh Day Church of God). It's because after we came back from foster care, she entirely took over our religious indoctrination. It was like this for probably just under six years, until I was about eleven. I think. The dates are incredibly fuzzy.

I think our best goal for healing is some kind of thriving, fluid multiplicity. We may always contain multitudes. That's ok. If we can find a way to consistently shift what we are to suit what we need to do along our personal standards of ethics, then I think we should. It's ok to have a fluid identity, like water. Don't silver roses reflect their surroundings, but remain themselves all the same?

I don't have that good communication beyond the subsystem, but I think Ray is trying to pass me an idea / suggestion about somewhere down the line possibly fusing with a deep part gatekeeper when we get around to that and when we aren't 1) busy dealing with gender shit (which will be a while) and 2) when I am more settled in the present and honestly its a pretty interesting concept

That gatekeeper is a bit of a mystique part that doesn't really work with or interact with most of the system by nature of their role - but I could see it happening and being a thing since me and that gatekeeper are somewhat originally modeled partially after the same OC (I'm not an introject, but that OC is one I relate and identify with to some level and my internal appearance was somewhat borrowed from it; that part is a shapeshifting part that takes the form of OCs and the original one he took upon was that same OC) and because I'm honestly volunteering and putting my name down for working with the deep dormant parts when the time gets around to it because despite being of the Riku subsystem - I cope and existed in a similar space and dealing with similar parts as those parts and while I'm "from this side" of the system, I am like... a dual citizen and that side of the system is not nearly as foreign to me as it is for other parts.

So that might be interesting. Not anytime immediate, but I am more than open to it.

I do love how this system is so enthusiastic to welcome me to the "functional unit" of the system - and I do actually mean that genuinely beyond my teenage "but i dont waaannnnnnnnaaa do anything and I don't want to participate in society" and less of an actual "its too much" - cause it would be really great if I was actually able to contribute and participate in helping the other parts in this brain that were in a similar place to me break out of that stuff and I would really like to contribute - especially since I am honestly, again, just really happy to be able to exist beyond curling up in a corner and having flashbacks constantly.

So if Ray and everyone hears me make one comment about the system and immediately eyeballs me as "such a possible future asset to the team" - as weird as it kind of is - I am more than glad to sign papers showing interest in being a trainee to the Squad because honestly, I think these guys are pretty cool and I'd really like to bring my old friends out here with me cause honestly, the main system is honestly a bit scared of them because they are pretty mentally fucked up and the longer they hide and cope in the "if i dont exist i cant have flashbacks 24/7" - the more unhinged they tend to get - but honestly, as someone who was there recently myself, they're not that bad and they're just really stuck and I really think they deserve better. They comforted me when I was in their place and I'd really like to help those parts come join me here.

Plus honestly, I really have to give the Functional Unit of this system a lot of credit, they did a lot of really good in the time I was either nonexistant or trapped in a loop and I'd really just like to add to that creation process because I think its really amazing how much we've learned to thrive since I was previously "alive".

That said, I firmly agree with the system's decision to completely ignore / leave "that side" of the system alone because 1) thats how the system is structured and there are a number of parts in place to keep it that way, so it would be fighting up stream 2) I know from personal experience that if the parts aren't coming to you, its more hurtful and harmful to try to bring them up - it's best to invite them when they come by on their own terms and take the time and 3) god it is hard "waking up" when you are in that place and while I think they deserve way better, I firmly stand by that half of the system being able to choose when they are ready and wanting to get that because again, its hard.

So while I do really like those parts, I really respect that they would rather not exist than deal with the trauma inherent in their existence and all - so all I am going to do is put my request and notification of willingness and interest to support them when the time comes on Ray's desk and letting him know that I very very much would love to help that side out as someone whose been there.

To which I'm getting the feeling from Ray, XIV, Riku, and Lucille that everyone is just astounded to hear anyone stating that about that side because I am only now realizing that literally everyone had no real good idea on how to safely work with those parts so I guess me being pretty casual about them is... unexpected for the elders who have spent years upon years thinking about how to handle "the sleeping dragon" as the system refers to that side of things.

That said, they do look at me like I went up to a Terrasque that has destroyed a whole continent and like I just grabbed it and started dressing it up in a tuttu or something.
