Dear bitches, I have a question that may benefit the class: I'm lucky to have a job that has a very generous 15 day sick leave policy, and no health issues that would make me take it - except that I also have the copper IUD that gives me horrid cramps on day 1 of my period, for just about 24 hours exactly.
What is the business speak for 'I'm taking a sick day today because of my period'? What is the general business speak for 'I won't be here for a day for health reasons' that doesn't imply contagion or invite questions about how I'm feeling when I come back? Thank you and I hope you know JUST how appreciated you are (seriously, who else would I ask this to)
Sweetie pie... we LOVE that we're the ones you choose to ask this of. This is all we ever wanted--for strangers on the internet to talk to us about their periods!
(Sidenote: I, Piggy, also currently have an IUD, and it leads to practically ZERO symptoms of menstruation. I don't bleed, I don't get cramps, I don't experience mood swings. About once per year my face breaks out in zits and I bleed a small amount for a few hours. That's it. I fucking love it. So readers, just keep in mind that everyone's body is different and your symptoms may vary on any medication. I DIGRESS.)
The #1 thing to keep in mind is that your employer is not entitled to any confidential medical information. If you have cancer, they don't have a right to that information. If you've got a headache, they don't have a right to know. If you're considering a cosmetic surgery, a gender alignment surgery, or any other surgery... they don't need to know. So if you're menstruating and it hurts, they definitely don't get to know.
So my preference would be to go with the direct approach. If you're cramping and you want to take a sick day, just tell your employer "I'm taking a sick day." If they press for details, say "I'll see you tomorrow. :)" If they keep pressing, remind them that they are not legally entitled to your confidential medical information.
But if you'd rather not be direct (and who could blame you?) just tell them you "got food poisoning from the mussels at that place off of i70--you know the one? Yeah last time I'll make that mistake, even if I do have a Groupon. I didn't know puke could even BE that color!" Food poisoning is gross and temporary and tends to dissuade further questions.

How to make the most out of a sick day:
Listen to your body. Sleep. Drink plenty of water. Eat if you can. Maybe take a shower or bath. Rest. Your body is doing a lot right now and you need to be patient. Focus on you and your health. Don't work or exercise or study. You don't have the extra energy too. Please don't buy into productivity culture and think that every day of your life needs to be productive and something you can monetize. You're sick. Take care of you. Please.

Ontario’s temporary sick day program is set to expire at the end of March and officials remain tight lipped over whether they will extend the program, saying instead the policy has “filled its purpose” and remains “status quo.” The province’s temporary sick day program, which gave employees three days off total to recover from COVID-19, was put in place in April 2021 in an attempt to curb the spread of COVID-19 in essential workplaces. The program also provided eligible workers up to $200 a day if they needed to get tested, vaccinated, self-isolate or care for a family member.

Sick Routine
I’m sick. And I feel awful. I don’t really fall sick often but since I live alone, its more important to take care of myself because no one else will.
Here’s a list of things I do to recover fast.
1. Consume Vitamin C and proteins.
2. Steam your face. If you don’t have a steamer, boil some water on the stove, pour it in another bowl, hold your face over it (put a towel on your head to trap the steam) and BREATHE. Eucalyptus oil is a great addition if you have a blocked nose.
3. Keep your feet warm even if it’s summer. So wear those socks.
4. Eat. You need to eat even if you don’t feel like it. Your body needs it more than ever.
5. Hydrate. Drink teas, green teas, masala chai, anything that’s going to soothe you. Ginger, honey, lemon can be added.
6. For a bad throat, I swear by 1 tsp of turmeric and 1 tbsp of honey. Mix it and eat it. I do this about twice a day, once at night and once in the morning.
7. Eat more soup, curry based rice / noodles, risotto - something that’s not bread. I find bread irritating for my throat.
8. Salt water gargling for a bad throat >>
9. Black tea and cinnamon is a great remedy. Another great remedy is lemon juice, 1 tbsp of honey and warm water.
10. Sleep!! Better to not work out either if you’re feeling really bad. A walk isn’t a bad idea though.
11. Tiger balm. It’s amazing! Put it on your nose, forehead, chest, throat and watch yourself recover overnight.
But an issue I thought of immediately when I felt under the weather was - how do I continue my daily habits? I didn’t want to stop being consistent.
So I decided to make it easier.
I allowed myself to take the time off and sleep as much as possible. My eyes felt too heavy to read, so I listened to a short 3 minute podcast instead. I didn’t read in depth articles, I skimmed over the news headlines. I took a 5 minute walk instead of my 1.5 hour gym session. And I didn’t meditate because I didn’t feel like it.
It’s better to take a break and do all you can to recover fully and fast than keep going at full speed and feeling like utter crap for weeks.

Tedros x Agatha (SGE)
fluff
Warnings: mildly sick characters, banter.
"A-Agatha?" A wobbly voice called.
Agatha stirred from her sleep, confused. She glanced at the clock on the wall, seeing the time to be 6:30 AM.
Nobody woke up that early except-
"Tedros!" She groaned, scrambling out of her bed and sliding her slippers on in a hurry.
Soon enough, she found where he was.
He was slumped against the doorframe leading out of their chambers, sweat beading his pale forehead, clearly bath-bound, judging from the towel and razor in hand.
"Agatha, thank you, can you please-"
"I thought I told you," Agatha said menacingly, snatching up his towel and razor, "not to get out of bed. And yet you did. And now, you're like this."
Tedros scowled, glaring at her.
"I need to get ready for today," he continued, ignoring her comment, "there's this really important meeting I've got to attend."
"So important you have to sacrifice your health?" Agatha questioned.
"I-I'm not even that sick," Tedros protested, his legs wobbling as he stood shakily. "I just called you over to ask to fetch, some, ah, water, just in case I felt a bit nauseous."
"Tedros," she began sternly, "you're going to bed right now. You're going to stay there, and sleep, and I'm going to get the chef to cook you the sick special: pasta with so much cheese it ruins the dish."
"But-"
"No."
"I really need to-"
"No."
"Come on, please-"
"No."
"Agatha, seriously-"
"NO! Tedros, you are sick and it is my responsibility to take care of you!"
"Fine. But the next time you're sick, I have to take care of you." Tedros bargained.
There was a thoughtful pause.
"No promises." Agatha replied with a smirk.
As Tedros opened his mouth to protest, Agatha dragged him to their bed, pushing him onto it and lying beside him.
"Now we're going to sleep."
"This was more for you than for me, wasn't it?" Tedros snorted.
"Perhaps," Agatha said with a guilty smile.
"You are such a criminal little princess, with ulterior motives."
"I think you mean to say queen." Agatha corrected with a grin.
"Criminal little queen, then." Tedros said, grinning also.
"I suppose that's my true title. But don't complain too much, you're the one who chose me after all, Tedros."
"How could I forget?" Tedros asked, rolling his eyes.
But he kissed her anyway.
"Sweet, but germs!" Agatha whisper-screamed, pulling away.
They stayed like that for many hours more, until Tedros felt much better, and Agatha felt much worse.
And then they laughed hard until they both felt worse and Tedros spent another day caring for Agatha.
Now, many little girls and boys around the world want a star-studded love story, filled with princes who will kiss you and compliment you and princesses who will look well and will always be your loyal one true love.
And while some of those things are fine and dandy, they should take some meaning from this tale.
Find someone who will care for you when you are sick. Find someone who will argue with you about how sick you are, and force you to stay at home, even if it is against your will. Find someone who will spoonfeed you soup, and laugh when it splatters.
Find someone who loves you like Agatha and Tedros love each other.

"More than one hundred thousand workers employed at America’s railways do not currently receive paid sick days and face strict and punitive attendance policies that leave many with no weekends and little time off. At the Warren Buffett–owned BNSF, for example, workers are allotted a point balance that diminishes if they’re unavailable for work — even in cases of illness or emergency. Those who reach a balance of zero can incur a ten- or twenty-day suspension, with a subsequent zero balance resulting in termination.
These are degrading terms of work no reasonable person would accept as fair. As engineer Ross Grooters put it to Mother Jones in September, workers are essentially 'fighting for the basic right to be able to be people outside of the railroad.' Michael Baldwin, president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen — one of four unions that rejected the deal now likely to be imposed — explained that the problem has been long-standing but, for obvious reasons, has been of particular concern to workers over the past two years: 'This became a glaring issue during the pandemic when we had members who were forced by their employers, the railroads, to stay home and quarantine without pay. But really it comes down to simple things like the flu for a day or two, or a sick child, and the ability to take a day or two paid.' In a series of testimonials published by More Perfect Union, worker after worker said much the same.
A separate analysis by MPU also made clear that the dispute is in many ways a microcosm of the broader shift of power away from labor and toward capital that has increasingly defined the American economy in recent decades.
Financial filings of several major US rail companies reveal not only that the industry is incredibly profitable but also that profits have grown without a commensurate share of the gains going to workers. Since 2001, margins have almost tripled at major carriers, while the share of revenue going to labor has dropped by double digits. Twenty years ago, investors in major freight companies could expect $15 in profit for every $100 in revenue. Today, that figure is more than $41. Companies are also employing many fewer workers today, leaving those who are employed with longer hours and even less time off. Many are expected to be on call more or less around the clock and can be required to report for shifts of nearly eighty hours on only ninety minutes’ notice. Shareholders, meanwhile, have received bigger and bigger payouts.
As MPU’s Eric Gardner concluded, 'the data suggest that the money once spent on fully staffing locomotives is now spent on enriching shareholders through dividend payments and stock repurchases.' In other words, rail companies have cut jobs in order to spend less on wages and boost profits while forcing workers on understaffed trains to accept punitive conditions, longer hours, and little time off."
- Luke Savage, from "By Forcing a Contract on Railworkers, Joe Biden Is Betraying Workers Everywhere." Jacobin, 29 November 2022.

"I work for a company with an incredibly generous 15 day sick day policy" pisses me right off. Fuck you, America.
Signed, someone in a civilised country who gets six months.
Tumblr media
Yeeeeeah. We're all pretty jealous and in awe of your civilized work benefits. Can we come live with you??? What's it like just never having to deal with burnout???? How does it feel to just, like, stay home and recover from an illness instead of trying to work through it?
I currently work for a company that has "unlimited paid time off," it's literally half the reason I accepted the job, and all of my friends are SHOCKED by how generous this policy is.

Fucking Microwave (Bondi Rescue)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prompt: Chase getting up in the middle of the night to make a snack and accidentally waking up Harrison because they didn't stop the microwaves obnoxious beeping in time.
Pairing: Platonic! Harrison "Lionel Hutz" Reid X Platonic! Chase Hardaker. Roommate AU
*********************************************************************
Third Person POV Chase wasn't sneaky. He tried to be, but he wasn't. No matter what he did, he was always caught. Like the time he tried to prank maxi by hiding, Maxi saw him hide too late. Or the time he tried to tell Jake that Lachie was missing, only for Lachie, unaware of the prank, to show up five minutes later. Jake was a good sport, at least, and didn't make fun of him like Chase thought he would.
But this, this was different, and it was all. Chase's. Fault.
Harrison has been up all day, all night, sick with some stupid stomach bug, so he was up all night throwing up anyway. Add in hard days' work, and Harrison was deadbeat by the end of the night but still unable to sleep from nausea or whatever. Tonight was the first night he'd fallen into a dead sleep, and Chase woke him up. Of fucking course.
It was curretly 2:45 in the morning, and Chase was playing Fortnite (something Jake did make fun onf him for) and decided to get something to eat real quick. He slipped downstairs like a ghost, careful not to knock anything over, and entered the kitchen. Figuring it wouldn't wake him up, Chase began to hum as he cooked pizza pockets in the microwave. He went to the sink, headphones clamped to his ears, so he didn't hear the microwave beeping as he got some water. He sang softly under his breath, drank his water, and turned to the microwave. He nearly screamed, but he did drop the glass ,which broke on the floor. Harrison raised an eyebrow. "What're you doing, you freak?" He asked as Chase removed his headphones, the music tinny. "Um. Nothing. Why you up?" He asked, grabbing the broom and quickly cleaning up the glass. As if on cue, the microwave started that stupid beeping noise. Chase swore, opening the door, about to apologize, when he cursed, nearly dropping the hot food, and nerly threw it on the counter before turning to Hutz. "I didn't mean to wake you up." "Clearly, because you're really edgy right now. It's fine," Hutz added at Chase's guilty wince. "I was coming for food either way, anyway." Hutz pressed past him, going to the fridge, and Chase frowned, "Want some pizza pockets?" "Thanks, but I think I'd throw them back up." "Fair." Chase hummed. He rocked on his heels. "So...you're not mad?" "About what?" Harrison looked surprised. "That you're a gamer that stays up 'til God knows when and get hungry like a normal person? Sure, be ashamed." He grumbled as he threw something in the microwave. "I mean...sure." Chase said. Harrison rolled his eyes. "I'm sick, not dying. Go play your game." "Okay." Chase paused at the hall. "Thanks, Hutz." He said. "Sure, sure." Hutz yawned. Smiling, Chase went back to his room.
(And scored three Victory Royales and had to remind himself it was nearly 3am and screaming was not helpful).
