I'm crying laughing, the DVDs are even worse than I remember... Season 1's menus are silent with a single static jpg of the same key character art they use for everything else, and the episodes on the Season 2 discs don't even match what's listed on the box! Absolutely stunning lack of shits given. Truly unparalleled. But I really shouldn't be surprised given... well... everything about how this series has been treated since the very beginning.
Time for a quick ~✨PHANDOM HISTORY LESSON✨~ to give newer/less hyperfixated folks more context for why the graphic novel being as great as it is is such a HUGE deal:
Danny Phantom was one of Nickelodeon's MAIN cartoons, in its time. It was a central pillar. One of the top three or four of their lineup, which is saying something when the competition includes the cultural juggernaut that is Spongebob.
Despite this, and despite its superhero theming making it perfectly marketable, it got basically ZERO official merch.
What little we did get was often ugly and very, very cheap. The dedication at the start of the graphic novel that jokes about collecting the Burger King toys? That's because it was some of the most notable merch the franchise EVER had. (I sadly do not have any of it. There was no BK in my hometown. Here's a pic from the internet, though, to give you an idea.)

If you think I'm exaggerating about that being the most significant physical merch to come out of the series, consider that the first video game had an entire menu option specifically for the Burger King promotional tie-in:

That video game, by the way, was one of only two ever based on the show. The first was an adaptation of "The Ultimate Enemy" in the style of a short sidescrolling beat-em-up, and the second was themed around "Urban Jungle" and (as far as I can tell--I've only played the first couple levels) was an arcade-style scrolling shooter. Both were for the Gameboy Advance, and both are...... fine, as far as cash-grabby video game tie-ins to kids' shows go. This was pretty normal for the time, so I suppose we did okay in that department, actually. They're not GOOD, but they're playable and have at least a bit of effort put into them.

But besides those two video games (plus a handful of simple, long-defunct Flash games on nick.com)? In the decade and a half since the show ended?
Nothing.
No books, no games, no comics, no web shorts--unless you count mega-crossovers with every other Nicktoon (a la Nicktoons Unite), or soulless promotional material like "Fairly Odd Phantom" (which, trust me, despite being the first new DP animation in over 10 years was not even worth the effort of watching).
...I think there was a limited edition FunkoPop once?
So yeah.
A Glitch in Time is not just the first cool, well-made thing we've seen from the franchise in a while. It's the first THING we've seen since the show. PERIOD. And arguably the first worthwhile supplementary material to EVER come out of the show, depending on how you feel about those GBA games and the Nicktoons crossovers.
This franchise is widely beloved even now, almost 20 years after it first aired, and it feels like that fact is now, finally, FINALLY getting some official recognition.
PLEASE read A Glitch in Time. Tell other people about it. The series--no, the fans--deserve this (and more of this, if the folks in charge see enough of a response and decide to grace us with any followup). It's LONG overdue, but better late than never.

I showed my wall to my capstone advisor, Jeff, and while he was happy that I now have a story and with the progress I made since the last time we spoke he is a bit worried that I am putting all my eggs into one basket. I can see where he is coming from since I STILL have not done any digital animation and it's becoming more and more of a stressor on me. He suggested I watch Rejected by Don Hertzfeldt since this is a compilation of multiple simple animations, Jeff suggested that rather than starting where my storyboard begins I should first animate the embarrassing moments themselves and that way if I'm not happy with the narrative later down the line I still have these and can make a plan around it.

I just can't do it man, I can't get into digital art. It feels so uncomfortable every time I try to draw in Krita, Fire Alpaca, or Photoshop, and every time I try to actually sit down and try to learn it I get so frustrated when the line work still comes out so goofy no matter how many times I try a new brush, setting, or simply redoing it. I used one of the bigger tablets from the Fablab this time which was a lot more comfortable to use than the small one I have but I don't know, if I had the option to make this traditionally I would be seriously considering it right now.

Lately, I've been thinking back to the topic of growing up without a dad so I looked at some videos on YouTube and a lot of them, like this one from Joe Rogan, are about people who had their dad leave them instead of passing away. Obviously, there is a difference between how I feel about my dad and how these people feel about their dad, Joe and Erik hold more anger and animosity towards their dads because they betrayed their trust while I held a lot of anger towards myself because I felt like I wasn't making anything out of my life or because I didn't understand the concept of death at age 7. However, one thing that did resonate with me was how they described their loneliness growing up with a single parent. I think by age 9 or 10 my mom would start training me on how to take care of myself at home alone. I don't hold any animosity towards my mom for this because it's like Erik said, my mom was working hard on her own trying to make sure that I had everything I needed and then some but that meant we had to cut some costs such as a babysitter. I believe this is where my love for cartoons stems from, when I would be home alone I would constantly have the TV on Cartoon Network even when I wasn't in the room and that is because I would get extremely anxious when the house would be dead silent. The worst punishment my mom could give me as a kid would be no TV for a week, not because I would be bored for that week but because I would be so anxious that I wouldn't be able to function. Eventually I got over it as I got older, the sound of silence and being alone most of the day is the norm.

So I was scrolling through Instagram the day before this event happened and I saw this ad called Manga in New York by Ginza Sony Park Project. It was an event at Studio 525 that brought 6 different Japanese artists, not necessarily manga artists, together so that they could create and display their manga in unique ways using Sony's technology. When I presented my wall to the guest artists their main critique was that I hadn't considered how I was going to present my animation during the exhibition. At first, I didn't really know what that meant because James Ring, an alumni last year who did an animation, just set up a TV and put the storyboards and sketches next to the TV which is what I was going to do. But after going to Manga in New York I can see what they meant, each manga here was displayed so differently from each other and because of that added to their individual experiences. The first manga, Interlude by Miku Masuda had the talk bubbles animated like animated manga on YouTube except each page had its own display screen so people could walk along the story rather than standing in place watching a slideshow on one screen. A Pilgrims Guide to Videogame by Takakurakazuki was the exact opposite, it only had two displays for two people who flipped through the pages with a joystick but the area in which it was placed in also had the comic printed on paper and hung along the wall with large pieces of art to go with the exhibit. Ueda and Sasami by Hikaru Ichijo also had its story printed out and displayed along the wall but behind the reader would be a giant Ueda with an animated Hamster inside her stomach. Dream Pill by Millennium Parade was the one I found the most impressive, the floor had a projection of water on it and if I stepped in the right spot the floor would rumble and the projection would make a splash, as if I was actually walking on water as I read this manga. A Guide by Masanobu Hiraoka, who is an Animator/Director, made a manga that had huge prints on each page and only certain panels beautifully animated on a huge TV display that really brought the vastness the manga was trying to portray in its story. Finally, Walker by Katsuya Terada had massive displays of his manga accompanied by background sounds like bird noises and rain sounds that you can faintly hear as you walk through his work. I also got the chance to see him draw live, unfortunately I only stuck around halfway through his live drawing cause I had other plans that day but this was a very insightful trip.
REFLECTION:
I don't know how I'm going to be an animator if I can't digitally draw the simplest of things. I'm not trying to give up just yet but Jeff might be right where maybe I should look into doing a series of shorts rather than just one singular narrative. Up until this point, I haven't gone on a museum trip specifically for my capstone, mainly because everybody else in the class seems to be busy so I would have to go by myself and I don't think I'll find anything useful in the museum regarding what I want to do for my project but I was happily proven wrong. When I left the museum an idea that I had for my capstone would be to play my animation on a CRT TV with two bags placed next to each other, one labeled embarrassing memory and the other happy memory. Audience members would then write down an embarrassing memory or a happy memory or both and place it in one of the respective bags and by the end of it, I wanted to see which bag got more filled up. But I will worry about how this will be displayed at a later date.

OCTOBER FILM DIARY 2023
In lieu of no longer having access to my Letterboxd, I will be keeping a diary of films at the end of every month, with some thoughts about them.
I did not watch enough horror films this October! I guess I made up for it slightly with SAW X aka the greatest cinema experience of my life. If you can, go and see a film in 4DX. I promise it is worth every penny. I really was not expecting much, but those seats shake you about like nobody's business. I felt like I was in a Saw trap! 10/10! Aside from that, hmmmm. I guess Di Humani Corporis Fabrica was more gross than any horror film I’ve ever seen. I am a transgender body horror writer for fucks sake of course I am afraid of the human body! Thanks Lucien and Verena, wish I could have seen it in 4DX. I finally got around to watching Unfriended: Dark Web, which is a piece of cinematic genius I will probably write something longer and more coherent about. Watch this space! Oh, and my partner showed me Cable Guy which was totally unsettling and the only time I have genuinely enjoyed watching Jim Carey act. A film I need to revisit when I am more awake for sure. 
Obvs for Halloween I had to maintain my 3 year strong tradition of not going out anywhere, ordering Chinese, and watching horror films. I began with Beyond The Darkness, a solid late 70s Italian taxidermy/ incest horror which features my favourite Goblin score of all time. Surprisingly though, my next choice of Evil Dead Rise was a total treat. Fun set pieces, interesting cinematography and characters I actually cared about, the sort of film that would have scared me shitless at a sleepover in the best way possible. My partner hadn’t seen Talk To Me yet, so we watched that together over dinner. I hadn’t seen Talk To Me since I watched it in the Westfield Vue (an experience in itself!), and so was happy to discover that the film holds up on rewatch. I was still scared! Thinking of that one depiction of Hell/limbo in particular! Not a film, but I found some time to start playing back through Undertale this Halloween, because Undertale is brilliant and there is nothing more to say on the matter. 
Something always gets in the way of my October horror film plans is the Film Bro Mecca that is LFF. Holy shiiiit I managed four days of straight festivalling and was exhausted! How do you Film Bros do it? Can someone make me unemployed so I can join you all? I didn’t see anything totally terrible, which is unusual for LFF, but possibly because I chose not to wake up at 6am to queue for Saltburn. Frederick Wiseman went beyond my expectations with Les Menus Plaisirs Les Troisgros, which was four hours long, but could have been longer, and was easily my film of the festival. All Us Strangers made me cry so hard that someone next to me, who I didn’t know, asked if I was okay lol, so my judgement there is clouded. It gets the weeping pass. Killers of the Flower Moon was of course great, and worth waking up at 5am for. Myself and my friend were the first in the queue, which made me realise that LFF queuing culture has died post pandemic, but then our egos were so inflated that we totally failed to get into Late Night With The Devil because we thought there would be no queue and opted for coffee instead oops. So what do I know! 
Aside from that, I had great times with Cruising and Multiple Maniacs, because of course I did. One is by one of my favourite directors and one is just so stupidly my shit. Both brilliant, both films you can put on at parties. I did NOT have a great time watching The Killer, David Fincher’s new output. It hwas just….boring? Sorry David, I wish I had more to say than that. Blah blah blah it’s supposed to be like that, I know! But I don’t care! I wasn’t interested! I wanted slow, not boring, there’s a difference !!! !!!!!!!! Regardless, October was a good month, filmwise, and November looks like it’s bringing some exciting new releases. AND I have co-programmed Crumb at the Cartoon Museum for the end of the month! If you’re in London, you should totally come (https://www.cartoonmuseum.org/whats-on-events/crumb)! I’m making zines and introducing it and everything! It’s not all bad out there!

Saturn in Aquarius: 2020-2023
Beginning on March 21, Saturn entered the revolutionary sign of Aquarius for a brief month and a half preview and will retrograde back into Capricorn until the end of September. On December 17, it will re-enter Aquarius until March of 2023. Saturn is known as the planet of limitations, boundaries, responsibilities and hard lessons, and up until now has been making its way through the restrictive and authoritarian sign of Capricorn since the beginning of 2018. Though Saturn is the ruler of earthy Capricorn and identifies well with that controlling energy, it doesn’t always do its best work in this sign. Traditionally, Saturn also rules the airy free-flowing sign of Aquarius and tends to be very comfortable in this sign, despite how different they may seem. When Saturn enters this humanitarian sign, it evolves into a higher version of itself, capable of bringing much needed equality and change into the world. How do we know this? Well, let’s take a look at the last few Saturn transits through Aquarius – from 1991 to 1994, and before that, from 1962 to 1964.
Let’s begin with Saturn’s transit through futuristic Aquarius back in 1962. Right off the bat, as Saturn entered the sign, the first automated (unmanned) subway train in New York City began running. Aquarius rules technology and automation, so this stood out to me as a very modern Aquarian development already. Also in 1962, Spacewar! was developed and released as the first computer game, featuring two spaceships fighting it out. Each spaceship was controlled by a player, meaning it was not only the first computer game, but also the first multi-player game for computers. Fitting, as Aquarius rules groups as well as spaceships and technology.

In the early 1990s, there were also some major technological advancements, specifically related to the internet and computers. In 1991, at the beginning of Saturn’s transit through Aquarius, Apple released the PowerBook, the first modern laptop computer, which was a huge development in the computer world and has influenced our modern computers significantly in their portability and design. The WorldWide Web was technically invented in 1989, while Saturn was transiting Capricorn, and it was exclusively meant for information-sharing between scientists in institutions around the world at that time. However, in April of 1993, after Saturn had entered Aquarius, CERN made the “www” software public, accessible to anyone with a computer. This is significant because Aquarius represents freedom and equality, and though it was still mainly the upper class that could afford computers at the time, this movement away from intellectual elitism essentially opened the internet up for free public use like we have today. In 1992, ViolaWWW was released, and was the first web browser to become popularized by users. It was also the recommended browser by CERN until it was replaced by Mosaic in 1993, the first web browser to display images with text rather than in a new window.
In the upcoming transit of Saturn through Aquarius, we can expect to see even more advanced technology developments. Many people are expecting Artificial Intelligence to really take off in the coming years, as well as 5G technology and space travel on a grander scale. Smart devices and appliances are becoming more readily available and more advanced.

The future of technology was on the minds of many in the early 1960s, reflected in ABC’s first color animated TV series, The Jetsons, premiering in September of 1962. Not only does Aquarius rule color television and cartoons, but the futuristic utopian vision held by The Jetsons is also very Aquarian in nature. Television also welcomed the eccentric and beloved Addams family in 1964 with ABC’s premiere of The Addams Family. This television classic questioned social norms of the time, specifically the values of the traditional mid-century American family, which were quite conservative at the time. This series became a symbol of the counterculture in television, a typically Aquarian concept. Another incredibly popular futuristic TV show that technically started during Saturn’s transit through Aquarius, Star Trek began filming in November of 1964, during the last couple months of Saturn’s journey through this sign. Star Trek is also notable for this transit due to the fact that it was one of the first television shows to give women, especially black women, prominent and respected roles. The character Lt. Uhura, the ship’s communications officer, was played by Nichelle Nichols, a black actress. At that time, black women typically only appeared in television as servants and maids, so this was a revolutionary change not only in television but in the civil rights movement as well. In fact, when Nichelle Nichols considered quitting the show to pursue a career on Broadway, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. met with Nichelle, convincing her to stay on the show as a part of history.
Television in the early 1990s during Saturn’s next transit through Aquarius was just as influential on culture as the television of the early 1960s. One of the first TV shows that comes to mind when I think of the 90s in television is the classic sitcom Friends. Though this show technically didn’t air until Saturn had moved into Pisces in 1994, the concept of the show resonates very closely with Aquarian themes. For one, the name “Friends” is representative of Aquarius, the sign of friendship and camaraderie. David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the show’s creators, began developing Friends in late 1993 under the early title of Insomnia Cafe, as Saturn made its way through the last 10 degrees of Aquarius. Though it initially had mixed reviews, Friends grew to become one of the most popular and beloved television shows of its time. Another well-loved show of the early 90s, though aimed more towards a younger audience, Bill Nye the Science Guy first aired in 1993, and embraced the forward-thinking Aquarian scientist archetype. Science in general is ruled by Aquarius, sign of innovation and discovery, and this show was designed to teach children about the realities of science and observation. One TV show I thought I should mention here as well is The Real World, which first aired on MTV in 1992, and is credited as being the birth of the “reality TV” genre of television, though it was edited quite often in favor of certain situations and reactions that didn’t quite reflect reality. It received a lot of criticism as well for not ever casting an Asian man in nearly 30 years on television. Reality TV is also very much a Saturn in Aquarius concept, as Saturn rules realism, and Aquarius rules television in general.

Aquarius is also the ruler of cartoons, as I touched on earlier, so it’s only fitting that I discuss a few cartoons of the early 90s. The trend of “cartoons for adults” was beginning to take off around this time, after The Simpsons paved the way in 1989 with its adult humor and hidden messages about adult life. One of the more “mature” cartoons that comes to mind when thinking of Saturn’s transit through Aquarius in the early 1990s is The Ren & Stimpy Show. This show first aired in 1991, and was quite grotesque in its animation style, featuring detailed animated close-ups with which other shows later followed suit. It was especially adored among college students due to its bizarre animation style and dark yet quirky humor. Another “adult cartoon” that began while Saturn was making its way through Aquarius is Beavis and Butt-Head, which first aired in 1993. This cartoon had mixed reviews and stirred up a lot of controversy with its seemingly idiotic social criticism, but became a staple of early 90s adult television nonetheless. The social criticism in this show is representative of Saturn in Aquarius as well, as Saturn portrays a harsh, critical nature, and Aquarius is a sign of society and social groups. Rocko’s Modern Life was yet another cartoon series that was aimed for young adults rather than children, and achieved moderate success after its initial release in 1993. This show was known for highlighting adult situations through cartoon animation- combining the adult responsibilities and themes of Saturn with the off-beat cartoony Aquarian personality. One last cartoon I’d like to mention in this segment of adult cartoons is Animaniacs, which first aired in 1993, and quickly became a hit with both children under age 11 and adults over 25. The large following among adults even led to one of the earliest Internet fandom cultures, another Aquarian concept.
Television in the coming years will likely circle around again to some of these rebellious Aquarian ideas, and it’s likely that TV will become even more entwined with the Internet over the next few years, as online streaming is more common these days than watching cable TV.
Saturn’s movement through Aquarius was a big part of the civil rights movement of the early 60s as well. The sign of Aquarius is a sign of freedom, equal human rights, and disrupting the status quo, which essentially were a few of the main goals of the movement. In fact, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a 10th house Aquarius Mercury, which is why we remember him best for his “I have a dream” speech, which he delivered August 28, 1963 in Washington D.C. for the 200,000+ people who gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial for the March on Washington. During the time he was writing and revising this speech, Saturn was transiting his Mercury in Aquarius as well. Later in 1963, on October 22, roughly 200,000 students stayed out of school in Chicago to protest segregation of African-American students in schools. This was a major peak of an ongoing battle to desegregate schools across America, again acting out the Aquarian values of equality and social justice.

In the early 1990s, this theme re-emerged through the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. A video went public in 1991 of five white Los Angeles police officers severely beating Mr. Rodney King after pulling him over for speeding. The riots began on April 29, 1992 after a trial jury acquitted four of the officers, enraging thousands of Southern Californians who took to the streets in anger. By the end of the riots, in early May, sixty-three people had been killed and thousands more were injured or had been arrested. The 1992 Rodney King riots went on to inspire the folk song “Like a King” from Ben Harper’s debut 1994 album Welcome to the Cruel World, which was released just after Saturn transited into Pisces; therefore, the songs were written and recorded while Saturn was in Aquarius.
In the coming transit of Saturn through Aquarius, we can expect to see another revolutionary movement, particularly watching the Black Lives Matter movement, because the hashtag was born while Saturn was in Scorpio, meaning Saturn in Aquarius will be coming up on a Saturn square for the birth chart of the movement.
Furthermore in music, there were a few major developments in the early 1960s while Saturn was in Aquarius that stood out to me. First, in the early to mid 60s, Joan Baez was beginning to make a name for herself in folk music during the American folk revival. Then in 1962, Peter, Paul & Mary released their debut album, which reached #1 on the US album charts. During the same year, Bob Dylan released his self-titled debut album of cover songs, and later went on to release his first original album The Times They Are a-Changin’ in 1964, towards the end of Saturn’s journey through Aquarius. These politically-charged folk artists all peaked with the folk revival during Saturn’s transit through Aquarius, which makes sense, as folk music is Aquarian in its nature, typically discussing issues of politics, inequality and other “radical” ideas of change. In fact, these artists also all performed “We Shall Overcome” at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington in 1963.
Another emerging group that stood out to me from this Aquarian transit was The Beatles. This incredibly successful rock group released their first couple of songs, “Please Please Me” and “Ask Me Why,” in January of 1963. By the next month, their single “Please Please Me” was topping the British rock charts. The Beatles released their debut studio album, Please Please Me, in March 1963, and by May had landed on the top of the UK album charts, staying there for 30 weeks, only to be replaced by their second studio album, With The Beatles. By October of 1963, the media began using the term “Beatlemania” to describe the frenzied behavior exhibited by Beatles fans across the globe. Many of their live performances were accompanied by the sounds of screaming fans and general hysteria. Fanatics, by the way, are also ruled by Aquarius. In February of 1964, The Beatles made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, drawing a record 73.7 million viewers. The crazed audience clearly depicts the “Beatlemania” phenomenon in full swing. But how do The Beatles relate to Saturn’s transit through Aquarius? First off, The Beatles were one of the first mainstream groups to market to the younger generation of teenagers rather than to their parents. This was a big shift in the music industry, as typically it was the older audience with all the spending power, whereas now, young teenage girls were a powerful force in the music market. Though their earlier songs avoided heavier social topics, it became obvious later in their career that The Beatles were a huge part of the birth of counterculture and anti-establishment ideas. In 1964, when the band was informed that a venue they were scheduled to perform at in Florida in the US was segregated, they refused to play unless the audience was integrated. Many more conservative countries refused to allow The Beatles to perform at all, in fear that their progressive counterculture ideas would “infect” their younger population. Even the United States attempted to ban all British acts in 1965, as they saw their emerging rock ‘n’ roll culture as “dangerous” to the youth of the nation. The Beatles were also highly progressive in their music style, and incorporated many new and unusual recording techniques into their albums. This ongoing theme of progressive thinking and “peace and love” apparent in the music of The Beatles is very in line with the nature of Aquarius.

Later, in the early 1990s, grunge bands were the new emerging music trend. A number of grunge rock bands all released major hit albums around the same time: right around Saturn’s transit through rebellious Aquarius. In 1991, Pearl Jam released their debut album Ten, followed by Nirvana releasing their second album Nevermind, and then Soundgarden with Badmotorfinger– all within a span of two months! All three albums were incredibly successful, and resonated strongly with the Aquarian counterculture and anti-establishment ideas brought out by the earlier generation in the early 1960s. Then in 1992, Alice in Chains released their second studio album, Dirt, which is considered by many to be their best work. Also released in 1992, Stone Temple Pilots debuted with their first studio album, Core, which received mixed reviews, though it went on to win a Grammy in 1994 for Best Hard Rock Performance. Nirvana received a lot of attention and success in the early 90s as well, and Kurt Cobain was dubbed “the voice of a generation” by many. Similar to The Beatles influence on counterculture, Kurt Cobain’s darker lyrical content touched many listeners’ hearts on a deeper level than the earlier hair metal had been able to.
In the next few years in music, we’re likely to see younger emerging artists, similar to Billie Eilish, who has an Aquarius Moon, taking over the scene with some revolutionary new ideas and social commentary in their lyrics.
Though Aquarius is a masculine sign, I’ve also noticed a pattern with emerging feminist movements during these transits due to the focus on equal human rights. The second wave of feminism began picking up speed around 1963, when two major works of feminist writing were published: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan. Both works were largely critical of the typical role of a female as a domestic housekeeper/mother figure in 1960s society. These works encouraged women to pursue careers that they felt passionately about for the first time. Also in 1963, journalist Gloria Steinem became a prominent figure in feminist culture after going undercover as a Playboy Bunny and revealing the poor treatment and underpayment of the waitresses at the Playboy Club.

In the early 1990s, during Saturn’s next transit through Aquarius, the third wave of feminism began to emerge. While second-wave feminism dealt primarily with issues surrounding equal opportunities for [predominantly white] women in the workplace, this third wave of feminism dealt with issues regarding intersectional feminism, violence against women and reproductive/sexual freedom. A trend of reclaiming “derogatory” female terms (for example: bitch, slut, whore) began largely with the Riot grrrl movement in punk music, popularized by female-constructed bands like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile, as a way of expressing feminine identity on their own terms.
Feminine power is already on the rise again, with Uranus having moved into feminine Taurus a couple years ago and still having several more years to go on that transit. Women in power will do great things with that power, and more women will come to be in power over the next few years with Saturn in this sign. Whether it be individual political power, or power in numbers, women around the world will come together and rise to power from now until 2023. Another trend I expect to see play out while Saturn transits Aquarius these next few years as well is that of gender revolution. With the gender roles of the past melting away, a revolution is roaring around the corner, and gender queer/LGBTQ+ identifying people will likely score a few big victories in the upcoming Aquarian transit.
Another theme I noticed through Saturn’s transit of Aquarius in the early 1960s was a theme of national independence and freedom. In August of 1962, the colony of Jamaica became independent, freeing Jamaicans from the United Kingdom after 300 years of British rule. In October that same year, Uganda also became independent from the UK. Then, in 1963, Kenya declared independence from the UK as well. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic and Zanzibar both experienced major revolutions during this time frame in search of freedom. This trend continued in the early 90s, with many countries, including Lithuania, Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia, all declaring their independence from the USSR in 1991.
It’s likely that we will see many more uprisings and movements towards independence, including the United States’ Pluto return in 2022/2023, which is expected to be a revolutionary moment for the history of the country.
These are the kinds of themes we are likely to see re-emerging until March 2023, while Saturn roams through free-spirited Aquarius. Technological innovations are going to be increasingly involved with our lives, as the internet of things develops further. Television will trend towards witty humor and social criticism, as it did the previous few times Saturn was in Aquarius. Civil rights movements will be center-stage, writing more groundbreaking history into our textbooks, while the future leans towards figures who are genderqueer, females, diverse, and/or of color, rather than in favor of the cis-gender/heterosexual white male. Mainstream music will take on its own social commentary within the industry. Independence of the individual as well as the nation will be stressed in the coming years. Saturn feels confident in this sign, and we should too, moving forward into Saturn’s “Age of Aquarius” with hope for a better future.

Saturn in Aquarius: 2020-2023

Beginning later this month, on March 21, Saturn enters the revolutionary sign of Aquarius for a brief month and a half preview before it retrogrades back into Capricorn until the end of September. Then at the end of the year, on December 17, it will re-enter Aquarius for the long-haul until March of 2023. Saturn is known as the planet of limitations, boundaries, responsibilities and hard lessons, and up until now has been making its way through the restrictive and authoritarian sign of Capricorn since the beginning of 2018. Though Saturn is the ruler of earthy Capricorn and identifies well with that controlling energy, it doesn't always do it's best work in this sign. Traditionally, Saturn also rules the airy free-flowing sign of Aquarius, and tends to be very comfortable in this sign, despite how different they may seem. When Saturn enters this humanitarian sign, it evolves into a higher version of itself, capable of bringing much needed equality and change into the world. How do we know this? Well, let's take a look at the last few Saturn transits through Aquarius - from 1991 to 1994, and before that, from 1962 to 1964.
Let's begin with Saturn's transit through futuristic Aquarius back in 1962. Right off the bat, as Saturn entered the sign, the first automated (unmanned) subway train in New York City began running. Aquarius rules technology and automation, so this stood out to me as a very modern Aquarian development already. Also in 1962, Spacewar! was developed and released as the first computer game, featuring two spaceships fighting it out. Each spaceship was controlled by a player, meaning it was not only the first computer game, but also the first multi-player game for computers. Fitting, as Aquarius rules groups as well as spaceships and technology.
In the early 1990s, there were also some major technological advancements, specifically related to the internet and computers. In 1991, at the beginning of Saturn's transit through Aquarius, Apple released the PowerBook, the first modern laptop computer, which was a huge development in the computer world and has influenced our modern computers significantly in their portability and design. The WorldWide Web was technically invented in 1989, while Saturn was transiting Capricorn, and it was exclusively meant for information-sharing between scientists in institutions around the world at that time. However, in April of 1993, after Saturn had entered Aquarius, CERN made the "www" software public, accessible to anyone with a computer. This is significant because Aquarius represents freedom and equality, and though it was still mainly the upper class that could afford computers at the time, this movement away from intellectual elitism essentially opened the internet up for free public use like we have today. In 1992, ViolaWWW was released, and was the first web browser to become popularized by users. It was also the recommended browser by CERN until it was replaced by Mosaic, the first web browser to display images in line with text rather than in a new window, in 1993.
In the upcoming transit of Saturn through Aquarius, we can expect to see even more advanced technology developments. Many people are expecting Artificial Intelligence to really take off in the coming years, as well as 5G technology and space travel on a grander scale. The Internet of things is also on the rise, with smart devices and appliances becoming more readily available and more advanced.
The future of technology was on the minds of many in the early 1960s, reflected in ABC's first color animated TV series, The Jetsons, premiering in September of 1962. Not only does Aquarius rule color television and cartoons, but the futuristic utopian vision held by The Jetsons is also very Aquarian in nature. Television also welcomed the eccentric and beloved Addams family in 1964 with ABC's premiere of The Addams Family. This television classic questioned social norms of the time, specifically the values of the traditional mid-century American family, which were quite conservative at the time. This series became a symbol of the counterculture in television, a typically Aquarian concept. Another incredibly popular futuristic TV show that technically started during Saturn's transit through Aquarius, Star Trek began filming in November of 1964, during the last couple months of Saturn's journey through this sign. Star Trek is also notable for this transit due to the fact that it was one of the first television shows to give women, especially black women, prominent and respected roles. The character Lt. Uhura, the ship's communications officer, was played by Nichelle Nichols, a black actress. At that time, black women typically only appeared in television as servants and maids, so this was a revolutionary change not only in television but in the civil rights movement as well. In fact, when Nichelle Nichols considered quitting the show to pursue a career on Broadway, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. met with Nichelle, convincing her to stay on the show as a part of history.
Television in the early 1990s during Saturn's next transit through Aquarius was just as influential on culture as the television of the early 1960s. One of the first TV shows that comes to mind when I think of the 90s in television is the classic sitcom Friends. Though this show technically didn't air until Saturn had moved into Pisces in 1994, the concept of the show resonates very closely with Aquarian themes. For one, the name "Friends"is representative of Aquarius, the sign of friendship and camaraderie. David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the show's creators, began developing Friends in late 1993 under the early title of Insomnia Cafe, as Saturn made its way through the last 10 degrees of Aquarius. Though it initially had mixed reviews, Friends grew to become one of the most popular and beloved television shows of its time. Another well-loved show of the early 90s, though aimed more towards a younger audience, Bill Nye the Science Guy first aired in 1993, and embraced the forward-thinking Aquarian scientist archetype. Science in general is ruled by Aquarius, sign of innovation and discovery, and this show was designed to teach children about the realities of science and observation. One TV show I thought I should mention here as well is The Real World, which first aired on MTV in 1992, and is credited as being the birth of the "reality TV" genre of television, though it was edited quite often in favor of certain situations and reactions that didn't quite reflect reality. It received a lot of criticism as well for not ever casting an Asian man in nearly 30 years on television. Reality TV is also very much a Saturn in Aquarius concept, as Saturn rules realism, and Aquarius rules television in general.
Aquarius is also the ruler of cartoons, as I touched on earlier, so it's only fitting that I discuss a few cartoons of the early 90s. The trend of "cartoons for adults" was beginning to take off around this time, after The Simpsons paved the way in 1989 with its adult humor and hidden messages about adult life. One of the more "mature" cartoons that comes to mind when thinking of Saturn's transit through Aquarius in the early 1990s is The Ren & Stimpy Show. This show first aired in 1991, and was quite grotesque in its animation style, featuring detailed animated close-ups with which other shows later followed suit. It quickly became a cult classic, especially among college students, who adored its bizarre animation style and dark yet quirky humor. Another cult classic "adult cartoon" that began while Saturn was making its way through Aquarius is Beavis and Butt-Head, which first aired in 1993. This cartoon had mixed reviews and stirred up a lot of controversy with its seemingly idiotic social criticism, but became a staple of early 90s adult television nonetheless. The social criticism in this show is representative of Saturn in Aquarius as well, as Saturn portrays a harsh, critical nature, and Aquarius is a sign of society and social groups. Rocko's Modern Life was yet another cartoon series that was aimed for young adults rather than children, and achieved moderate success after its initial release in 1993. This show was known for highlighting adult situations through cartoon animation - combining the adult responsibilities and themes of Saturn with the off-beat cartoony Aquarian personality. One last cartoon I'd like to mention in this segment of adult cartoons is Animaniacs, which first aired in 1993, and quickly became a hit with both children under age 11 and adults over 25. The large following among adults even led to one of the earliest Internet fandom cultures, another Aquarian concept.
Television in the coming years will likely circle around again to some of these rebellious Aquarian ideas, and it's likely that TV will become even more entwined with the internet over the next few years, as online streaming is more common these days than watching cable TV.
Saturn's movement through Aquarius was a big part of the civil rights movement of the early 60s as well. The sign of Aquarius is a sign of freedom, equal human rights, and disrupting the status quo, which essentially were a few of the main goals of the movement. In fact, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a 10th house Aquarius Mercury, which is why we remember him best for his "I have a dream" speech, which he delivered August 28, 1963 in Washington D.C. for the 200,000+ people who gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial for the March on Washington. During the time he was writing and revising this speech, Saturn was transiting his Mercury in Aquarius as well. Later in 1963, on October 22, roughly 200,000 students stayed out of school in Chicago to protest segregation of African-American students in schools. This was a major peak of an ongoing battle to desegregate schools across America, again acting out the Aquarian values of equality and social justice.
In the early 1990s this theme re-emerged through the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. A video went public in 1991 of five white Los Angeles police officers severely beating Mr. Rodney King, who was black, after pulling him over for speeding. The riots began on April 29, 1992 after a trial jury acquitted four of the officers, enraging thousands of Southern California residents who took to the streets in anger. By the end of the riots, in early May, 63 people had been killed and thousands more were injured or had been arrested. The 1992 Rodney King riots went on to inspire the folk song "Like a King" from Ben Harper's debut 1994 album Welcome to the Cruel World, which was released just after Saturn transited into Pisces, therefore the songs were written and recorded while Saturn was in Aquarius.
In the coming transit of Saturn through Aquarius, we can expect to see another revolutionary movement for POC, particularly watching the Black Lives Matter movement, because the hashtag was born while Saturn was in Scorpio, meaning Saturn in Aquarius will be coming up on a Saturn square for the birth chart of the movement.
Furthermore in music, there were a few major developments in the early 1960s while Saturn was in Aquarius that stood out to me. First, in the early to mid 60s, Joan Baez was beginning to make a name for herself in folk music during the American folk revival. Then in 1962, Peter, Paul & Mary released their debut album, which reached #1 on the US album charts. During the same year, Bob Dylan released his self-titled debut album of cover songs, and later went on to release his first original album The Times They Are a-Changin' in 1964, towards the end of Saturn's journey through Aquarius. These politically charged folk artists all peaked with the folk revival during Saturn's transit through Aquarius, which makes sense, as folk music is Aquarian in its nature, typically discussing issues of politics, inequality and other "radical" ideas of change. INTERVIEW: Rajorshi Basu on Creating Studio Durga and the State of Anime in India

  What constitutes “anime” is a topic of much debate. The general public associates the word “anime” with a particular visual style. Purists, on the other hand, believe that only animation made in Japan can be considered anime, regardless of whether the visuals are on the K-On! end of the spectrum or the Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt end of the spectrum. This is, to an extent, understandable. But can such a strict definition continue to hold weight in an era where anime is becoming increasingly global? Can a production from outside Japan that possesses all the traits we have come to associate with anime be called anime?
  The members of Studio Durga — an independent animation studio based in New Delhi, India — certainly seem to think so. They proudly claim to be India’s first anime studio. While India has worked on anime in the past — in the form of co-productions with Japan (such as Ramayana: the Legend of Prince Rama) — what sets Studio Durga apart is the fact that they work without any foreign assistance, be it from Japan or elsewhere. Their debut work Karmachakra — an 80-minute Bengali-language film, the first in a series of films — is an entirely independent film, made by a core team of only seven members for animation production. Karmachakra is pending release, but the first 20 minutes of the film have been uploaded on YouTube as a “pilot episode” — which won awards at the Independent Shorts Awards 2020: the Platinum Award for Best Animation Short, and Honorable Mentions for Best Web Series/TV Pilot and Best Original Score. Karmachakra is a supernatural mystery-drama, aimed at an older audience — something that is rare in India, where animation has long been seen as a medium for younger audiences only. The Indian anime community has reacted very favorably to Karmachakra, with many heralding it as a step forward for animation in India.

    I reached out to Studio Durga founder and CEO Rajorshi Basu, who was kind enough to answer my questions. We had a great discussion, not only about Karmachakra, but about anime and 2D animation in general. Here’s what he had to say:

How did you get into anime and manga?
  Rajorshi: The first anime I recall watching was Ninja Robots on Cartoon Network — way back when I was three or four years old and didn’t really know it was called anime. There was Heidi, Girl of the Alps, also on Cartoon Network, a title from the World Masterpiece Theater collection of anime. It was my first exposure to the work of many old masters, including Hayao Miyazaki. Then they started showing anime on the Toonami programming block, with Cardcaptors and Dragon Ball and all that stuff.
  Animax was also a huge factor. I used to check out a lot of stuff on Animax before it finally went away. And then of course streaming services happened. But yeah, it was tough to get your hands on anime and manga back then. I remember that you would just chance upon secondhand manga in shops. That was procurement back in the day. But now it’s a different ballgame; one can just open up Netflix and find all kinds of different shows. Throughout the years there have been a lot of different shows that have influenced me, and all of that comes into the stuff that we are doing. I think this idea of doing an Indian anime was something I’ve had since my early teens to late teens.
So you decided pretty early on that you wanted to make an Indian anime, is that right?
  Rajorshi: Yeah, this idea has been with me for roughly half my life. It's just that I actually knew how to do it after a whole lot of experiences. Especially after visiting Japan in 2013. I went there for a pop culture research program where we were actually given access to facilities that make Japanese entertainment, including animation.

  So did you face any opposition in pursuing this path?
  Rajorshi: We faced nothing but opposition, actually. In 2017 we’d put out a trailer on YouTube and, you know, it was just a sort of demo. It's not there anymore; we took it off. This was way before we brought out the actual trailer that you see right now. It was only after we took it to the quality that we wanted that people started thinking about the possibility of, you know, Indian anime. Especially after 2019, when the two movies (Weathering With You and Dragon Ball Super: Broly) were released in India. The community started considering the possibility that Indian anime can happen. 
  I think there are two main challenges. One challenge (which we’ve kind of got past) was finding the right people for the production because hand-drawn animation is a lost art and it's very tough to find people who pursue that. It was tough finding people, which is also why we are a very small team. We somehow managed, over a number of years, to finish the movie production. 
  The other challenge (one we are facing right now) is distribution. I think that’s because India does not have a proper distributor for anime. Of course, we see some anime on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Crunchyroll. Disney+ Hotstar, which actually has the biggest reach in India, don't showcase any anime. There is a solid market and demand for anime in India but there's hardly any supply, which is why we thought we’d fill that gap in the market. It depends on what kind of channels you go through when it comes to distribution. I mean, we are in talks with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and we want to be in talks with Crunchyroll. But it's very hard to find people, to find the correct approach or routes through which you take this product. I think that's what matters. In terms of distribution, routes matter more than the product itself because if you are talking about Netflix or Amazon Prime, they are going to look at it as an independent movie and they are also going to want to see examples of such production that has made it in the market and things like that.
  Obviously, there's a huge demand but there needs to be a distributor that recognizes the demand and what it means when something like our product (or anyone who is doing an animated film that is not for kids) gets licensed. Distribution is the final roadblock we are facing right now because when it comes to quality and production values, all of the people that we have talked to have appreciated our work. But when it comes to actually slating on an acquisition session, there's always some kind of discrepancy there. There's no one to handle animated movies when it comes to India, unless you’re talking about the kids’ market. That's a totally different topic.

  You raise an important point about 2D animation being something of a lost art. In particular, the whole Japanese anime workflow is totally different from what most people are used to doing. So, how did you learn it, and how did you find people with this skill?
  Rajorshi: So the current core team is a team of four people, including myself. I personally handle everything other than the actual drawing, because although I’ve studied design and art and all of those things, music and film production is what I have primarily been trained in and what I have experience in (the former of which I'd been recognized with a scholarship for from Berklee College of Music). Compositing — the final “look” of anime — is something that I learnt entirely on my own through observation and software/workflow research. So I know the process of anime production. There is hardly anyone who makes animation through this process in India. So I would say it is something very unique to our studio. 
  The people that I have, they were actually making the transition to college back when I hired them. They had considerable skill when it came to illustration and making animation, but it was this project that got everybody up to a certain level. The core team that I started with are still working together — basically the four of us, but we extend sometimes to 10 people. And if you’re talking about the total number of people involved in this project, it’s over 30. But finding the core team took a long time. I’d actually thought of starting a business with this around four or five years back, and since then it’s been about finding people to execute and help out in the process. 
  When it comes to hand-drawn animation, there is talent out there. There just needs to be a product that makes use of those talents. I wanted to create a forum where talented artists could join in and showcase their capabilities. It’s not that 2D animation is completely not there, it’s just that it’s not focused on by people as a career option because there are no outlets for it that are monetizable. I think that’s more of the problem. When you look at some talented students from NIDs [National Institutes of Design, India], you will find that they are very much capable of doing everything that we do. It’s just that there’s no forum or platform to create a product like this which makes use of both the anime production process as well as the hand-drawn aspect of it. 
So if you look at, say, Chinese animation studios, the way they started off was by doing subcontract work for Japanese anime studios. They slowly built up their own base, their own talent pool, and then started to make originals of their own. So, why did you decide to start off with an original rather than go through this process?
  Rajorshi: Chinese animation actually has a much richer history. They’ve been doing their own intellectual properties for longer than they’ve been outsourcing. But with India that is actually not the case. When it comes to 2D animation we’ve had collaborations with Japan in the past, whether it’s Ramayana or Batu Gaiden. But our main aim was to do something that was completely Indian-produced. I think that’s the main draw, so that we could call it India’s first anime.

    Let’s talk a bit about outsourcing outside our realm of animation: when it comes to 3D animation and VFX. India is actually a world player in the market when it comes to 3D assets and VFX being outsourced to us. But when it comes to intellectual properties, there’s pockets of brilliance that surface from time to time, especially in the non-3D space, because the 3D space is a framework in itself, a framework that I personally have also been very connected with in the past, in all the projects that I’ve freelanced for (when it comes to music, editing, and the post-production side of things). When it comes to hand-drawn animation, I would say that there are these pockets of independent production which do not find the correct outlet or distribution platform. But they’re there; they’ve been there for a very long time. They’re not necessarily practicing the anime art style like we’re doing, but they’re doing hand-drawn animation nonetheless. And the quality and execution is something that’s worth showing to the world, it’s just that there’s no proper distribution channel as I was saying. Why anime? That’s because there’s huge demand for this particular art style. Since there was already a demand for it, as well as respect in the community for something that is a product made by India for India, that is where we came in and thought “this is a niche we want to fill.” 
  And look, most of the artists who worked on this project have already worked on commissions for foreign clients all of their lives. We don’t look at outsourcing as a route that we necessarily have to do first before we make our own intellectual property. Because we do that anyway: when it comes to making small animations for brands, or working for clients that are primarily non-Indian. The whole idea about this project is that it’s by India and for India. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a statement, but it is a specific niche that’s appealing to a lot of people, thankfully.
So let’s talk a bit more about Karmachakra itself. When I saw the trailer on YouTube, the art style stood out to me, and it reminded me of a couple of things. One was the works of Mamoru Hosoda, with his distinctive style of flat shading. The other was Shin Sekai Yori, which has sticker-like 2-dimensional character designs but with mood lighting and effects and appropriate color palettes to create an atmosphere. Were any of these your inspirations, or were there other influences?

    Rajorshi: I mean, Mamoru Hosoda is an inspiration for any animation filmmaker. My personal inspiration, in terms of direction and in terms of storytelling, is Satoshi Kon. You know, works like Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paranoia Agent: all these films and shows that are very loved, conceptually and thematically. My second influence would be the directorial signature of Tetsuro Araki (Death Note, Attack on Titan); I think that directorial signature is very alluring. In terms of how to tell a story through many characters, I’d say Durarara is an influence. I mainly chose to go with urban fantasy, inspired by the unique approach that light novels like Boogiepop or Nisio Isin's works take. Other than that, I think my all-time favorite director is Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop). 
  Some more important key influences that left a huge mark on my imagination of what the medium can be are:
Wolf's Rain, Black Lagoon, the Steins;Gate franchise, Terror in Resonance, Michiko and Hatchin, Barakamon, Mushi-Shi, Great Pretender
Spirit-world action-comedies like The Devil is a Part-Timer, Blood Lad, Hoozuki’s Coolheadedness, and Noragami
Mind Game from director Masaaki Yuasa
Any project involving character designer Yoshitoshi Abe, like Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain, etc
There's also the noitaminA block stuff; short, offbeat 11-episode per cour series with a broader audience in mind. Brings to mind the makers of the noitaminA logo animation, Studio Rikka and their charming sci-fi works such as Time of Eve and the like.
  In terms of manga:
The superlative, mind-game ridden works of Shinobu Kaitani
The out-of-this-world panelling in works by Keiichi Koike
The poignant interpersonal/social drama from folks like Shuzo Oshimi and Inio Asano
The artful, satirical guro manga from people like Shintaro Kago
The sprawling, epic series from the legendary Naoki Urasawa, such as Monster and the like
Brilliant food/drink manga such as Bartender and Sommeliere by Araki Joh, or even Oishinbo.
  These are just names I can think of right now, but there’s actually plenty of influences for all of us here at Studio Durga.
  Let’s talk about the OP. From Episode 0 of Karmachakra, what strikes me as its most "anime" element is its OP. From the song itself, with its “anime theme song” vibes, to the color palette reminiscent of the Psycho-Pass OP, to the character-focused cuts reminiscent of the Baccano and Durarara OPs, to the text on screen reminiscent of the Cowboy Bebop OP: this OP screams "anime." OPs usually are a studio's way of enticing viewers to watch an anime, so clearly, a lot of effort went into this OP. And it's a really attractive and alluring OP. What went into the making of this OP? How did you storyboard it, and how did you compose the opening song? How much more effort was it to animate, comparatively?

    Rajorshi: The OP song was composed, arranged, produced, and played by me more than six years ago. At the time, I was inspired to make a melody and instrumentation that sounds “classic anime.” It was a personal project back then, and I had no idea I was going to be using it for an anime production of my own in the future. So when it was time, my mom helped with the lyrics and I asked Tanisha (the singer who I've collaborated with on the ED as well) to sing out the lyrics composed for the song. It was a blast to make. Unlike the ED, which I composed much more recently, the OP arrangement is more busy than minimal, which was my style back then and which probably works better for the usual high-energy anime OP.
  Unlike background scoring, which is set to edited bits of animation, the animation for the OP was set to the music instead. We were using a scratch track and timing every cut to whichever hit we wanted it to fall on. The choreography and transitions took more time than standard animation, as the entire thing was meant to seamlessly flow with non-stop fluid animation. The effort varies in anime production from shot to shot, but in the case of the OP, it was about tying together an entire string of money-shots. Apart from the animation, we had a lot of fun with the compositing as well. Doing MVs is the most enjoyable activity for us.
Let’s talk about the world of Karmachakra. What inspired it? Personal, lived experience or literature and other media?
  Rajorshi: Karmachakra is a series of movies. The second and third are what we’re working on right now. The second is more of the action-thriller kind, and the third/finale is along the lines of philosophical sci-fi. But the first one is more of a mystery-drama. I’m a huge mystery buff; that’s a sort of personal favorite genre of mine. So thematically I think the first movie of Karmachakra is mostly a mystery-drama with certain supernatural elements and certain cultural elements to those supernatural elements. So there’s many different layers. I usually like to do something that is layered, something that is character-driven but layered not only in the histories of the characters but in the lore that ties it all together with a supernatural theme, and also the third layer that puts them in a cultural context. These are basically the three levels that we’re working on when it comes to Karmachakra.

    When it comes to cultural influences, there’s me being a Bengali and hence making this in Bengali. That is something I had in mind from the beginning. Having connections to the Bengali film industry, getting some of the best names from there to do voice acting on this: that was definitely part of the plan. 
  For the script, I’ve had many, many different influences. My background is quite varied. Since I was a kid I’ve always been a music buff. I was very much into classic/prog rock and concept albums from the '70s and '80s, apart from my production and performance background in jazz, jazz fusion, RnB, soul, and funk. So storytelling is a huge part of music for me, whether it’s through film scoring or whether it’s through a concept album where you tell stories through music itself. Other than that, I graduated in English literature, which is a huge part of the general approach I take to things when it comes to layering and writing for film. For this production, between film, literary works, musical works, and anime, there’s a LOT of influences. I wanted to take all those influences and make something that was cohesive enough for someone who was watching, but at the same time wasn’t predictable or cookie-cutter like.
Are there any talented Indian animators you’d like to spotlight?
  Rajorshi: I would like to talk about Ghost Animation. They’ve been working on little animated clips for Bollywood movies for a very long time, but recently they made a short film, Wade, set during a flood that happened in Bengal. They put it up on Kickstarter, promoted it, and successfully got it funded. I think it won an award at Annecy or something. And it’s all hand-drawn.
  Apart from that, there’s a couple of guys who’ve been in the Indian anime community and illustrator community for a very long time. Their names are Krishna and Balram Bannerjee, but they’re informally called the Xong Bros. They’re primarily comic artists, so they don’t do a lot of animation, but they also work on animation for indie games made by foreign studios: they make some trailers and the like for them.
  There was also this short film that was commissioned by Royal Stag Short Films, called Death of a Father. Entirely hand-drawn. Not the anime artstyle, but entirely hand-drawn.
  Lastly, there’s Jazyl Homavazir. A long-time animator, illustrator, and coach in the Indian comics/animation scene in the art style of manga. Both him and the Xongs are dear friends of ours who support and appreciate our initiative.
Do you have any parting thoughts for our readers?
  Rajorshi: I would say don’t make any compromises. If you know you’re capable of doing something, whether it is independently or whether you have backing or whatever it is, don’t make any compromises and do something that is only an approximation of what you actually want to do. If you have a vision, just go ahead and do it, and then see what happens. You might succeed, or you might fail, but that will be a learning experience. Just because something is tangentially related to whatever vision you might have, don’t settle for less.

Childhood Friends AU: Max and Markov (Marxkov)
Part 1- In which Max ‘makes’ a friend

A/N: I got a bit carried away while writing and this became less of a list of bubbly making headcanons and more of a tragic origin story, so it’s a little different from the Marikim headcanons, so let me know what you guys think.

-Max’s mother, Claudie, gets pregnant with him at age 18
-he was an accidental pregnancy
- his father, Adam Kante, had just enlisted in the French Armed Forces and his mother was just starting university
-it wasn’t ideal circumstances, but his parents loved each other and didn’t want to give up
-So his dad proposed, and was stationed in Paris until Max was born
-unfortunately, then he was sent off to an overseas base
-Luckily, Claudie’s brother steps up to help out.
-Two years older than his sister, he was very different from her and her husband. While both of them were disciplined and fact oriented, he was more laid-back
-His dream was to be a stand-up comedian, and his stage name was Mark Oz
-He worked at night so he was able to watch Max during the day so Claudie could go to school
-With Adam away for so long, Mark became a father figure of sorts to Max
-They would spend most of the day together, and Mark realized early on that he had a child-genius on his hands
-So he bought extra learning material for Max
-He encouraged Max as much as could to peruse whatever academics interested
-Max was only 3 though, so nothing truly interested him more than Transformers
-Mark played the cartoon as background noise one day, and Max was instantly hooked
-He watched every episode
-For his birthday, he received only Transformers figurines
-when he started school he would draw new transformers in Art class
-For his 5th birthday, his mom bought him a robotics kit (a child-friendly robotics kit)
-and his Uncle bought him a coding Manuel
-Max found his new passion
-him and his uncle spent days building simple robots
-he was so fascinated by robots that he spent most of his free time learning more
-he dreamed about one day creating his own transformer
-and his Uncle helped him.
-He was never super academic but was still had the family brains.
-He full heartedly threw himself into Max’s passion
-inadvertedly, it helped his career. He created one of the most unique stand up comedy routines ever heard in Paris, those lucky enough to see it raved about it for years
-Mark Oz was finally hitting it big time, and he did not give a shit
-the only person he cared about making smile everyday was his nephew
-together, the two of them continued to hone Max’s robot building skills
-Mark bought a big black notebook and in it he wrote down every robot Max wanted to build
-max would dictate the details and Mark would write it, and then Max would attach a picture he drew of it
-despite being a child genius, he was still a child and had atrocious handwriting
-Slowly they were crossing robots off the list, starting with the most simple
-a basic walking robot
-eventually, and Mark didn’t know how long it would take, but they’d get to their last robot
-a fully functioning AI
-When Max turned seven he started taking advanced classes
-His mom had just finished her PhD, one of the youngest ever to complete the program, and was considering applying to become an astronaut
-Both Mark, Max, and her husband encouraged her to go for. Adam offered be discharged from the military to look after Max, but Mark insisted that he wouldn’t mind taking care of Max
-“Neither one of you should put your dream jobs on hold. I’ve been watching Max for seven years, I love the kid, and I’ll take care of him for the rest of my life if he still wants me around.”
-And Mark kept that promise
-Unfortunately, he kept it because his life was cut short.
-It was after a late show, the driver was intoxicated and didn’t see Mark crossing the street.
-Claudie withdrew from the astronaut program and took up a job as a train driver so she could be around for Max
-Adam returned from his deployment, but things just weren’t the same. He enlisted in a third campaign after a month
-Max was devasted. His uncle was the only one who understood him.
-He didn’t speak a word to anyone for a year.
-His mom is concerned, but therapists insist that Max just needs time
-Meanwhile, Max works his way through his robot list.
-His mom offers to help him, but he refuses.
-If he can’t build them with his uncle then he’ll build them alone
-a year later he’s halfway through the list
-His mom almost cries when he asks her to come see his robots
-He spends the entire day showing her the different ones and explaining what they do
-After that, their relationship improves greatly. Max talks a lot about everything he’s interested in
-Claudie is barely able to keep up
-She’s afraid that he might have an unhealthy attachment to his robots though, and is afraid of what will happen when he completes his list
-So she introduces him to a new hobby, video gaming
-Mark had tried to get Max into it a few times but Max was more interested in Robotics and programming at the time
-Now though, in memory of his uncle, he gives it a go
-and fucking loves it
-He and his mom spend the weekend playing old games that his uncle had
-He doesn’t give up on his robots though
-Two years later, he’s down to the very last robot on his list
-His father comes home that same week, his three year campaign ended
-Once Max started speaking again, his father would video call him. Max would show him his latest robot, and his father, who didn’t know a thing about robots, would ask him as many questions as he could come up with about it
-It was slightly awkward at first, seeing his dad in person, but soon it faded away
-Max still didn’t want help with his robots, but he was more than happy to play video games with his father
-his dad was skilled, particularly in fighting games, and Max almost never beat him
-at first
-his dad taught him a few tricks, and Max practiced and practiced until he could beat his dad
-Max was doing pretty good
-Still, though, he seemed to have an aura of sadness around him
-His dad asked him one day what games he liked to play with his friends
“I don’t have friends”
-It was the advanced classes. They were filled with older kids, and none of them wanted to befriend a 10 year-old
-His parents decided to pull him out at the end of the year.
-For college, he’d be going to a regular (though very good) school with kids his own age
-Francois Dupont had a great reputation, and offered him an academic scholarship
-His dad enlisted in another campaign
-Max was sad to see him leave, but was feeling happier than he had been in a while
-He continued to work on his last robot
-He turned 11 and started school at Francois Dupont
-He had no idea how to interact with kids his own age
-He was seated next to a hyperactive kid who introduced himself as Kim
-They were in the very front row and Kim joked that the teacher was already trying to keep an eye on them
-it wasn’t very funny, but Max almost fell over laughing
-“Wow, if you thought that was funny, just wait till you meet my friend Marinette!”
-“I’m sorry its just that…I would never disrupt class. Knowledge is the most valuable thing we can gain, and I intend to gain as much as I can.”
“I don’t know man, that sounds kind of like something a mad scientist would say.”
“well, I am trying to build the world’s first sentient AI in my mom’s basement.”
-Being at a regular school is a relief to Max
-The homework is extremely easy in comparison to what he’d been doing before, which gives him more time to work on his robot
-(bare with me through this next part guys, I do not know anything about science, mechanics, or engineering so this will probably be a heaping load of bullshit)
-the biggest difficulty in the creation of this robot was not creating an AI, many people have done that before, but rather figuring out how to allow it to feel without programming emotions into it
-Max had been doing a lot of research on Markov chains lately
-He believed that being able to code the ability to predict events would lead to a breakthrough on how to code the comprehension of emotions
-but the Markov process and chains were extremely complicated
-but, Max was out of ideas
-so he spent weeks reading about all the research and experiments. He read about modern day applications of it, analyzed the codes he could get his hands on
-and then he made his own.
-He didn’t need his AI to study systems, but rather humans
-ideally, if he did his code right, the AI would scan the web for all examples of human behavior to catalog and process it. Hopefully, then it would gain the ability to comprehend human emotion
-Max figured he would know if it worked if it was able to predict how people would react to different things being said to them
-sure enough, he was right…in a way
-Max didn’t think he’d be able to achieve true sentience like what the transformers had
-He was trying to give his AI the ability to understand emotions, not the ability to feel
-and yet, somehow, from the first day the robot was online, he seemed to have emotions
-it confounded Max
-He spent all of winter break talking to the robot
-trying to determine if it really felt
-He started just by talking to it
-it had access to all the knowledge on the internet, yet it seemed to have trouble grasping many theories about philosophy and morals
-Max accidentally stayed up the entire night discussing moral relativism with it
-He counted it’s ability to ask questions and hold a conversation in it’s favor
-however, that’s what Max was aiming for in the first place, and it didn’t convince him it had feelings
-he had to admit though, he truly hoped it did as he was quickly considering the robot as his first true friend
-in the weeks they spent talking Max told the robot his life’s story
-and the robot replied with genuine sympathy
-Max connected with it in a way that he’d only connected with one other person before
-he showed it a video of his uncle’s stand up routine
-when the robot started laughing Max was blown away
-not by the laugh, but by it’s reaction to it
“Oh no! Max, I am afraid I had a malfunction! Do you think it is possible for auditory signals to transmit a virus?”
“What? No, that’s laughter. It’s natural, especially when you’re listening to someone as funny as my uncle.”
“Yes, the brother of your mother. You mentioned he had a career as a comedian, and a quick scan of the web shows that he was quite successful.”
“Yeah, he was.”
“You sound sad. Were you close?”
(it’s only because it’s a robot and has advanced hearing sensors that it’s able to hear Max’s “Yes”)
-Max really hopes the robot truly is sentient
-What finally convinced him is when he heard it cry
-He’d left it in the basement to get eat dinner, promising to be back in half an hour
-but got drawn in to a round of video games with his mother
-sure enough, a few hours past before Max remembered he left the robot in the basement
-he shrugged it off as an accident until he got to the basement door and heard quiet sobs
-when he went down the stairs it was the robot crying
-when Max came into hearing range, the sounds stopped
“Max! You’re back! I thought you had abandoned me!”
-it didn’t seem possible, but Max could hear the happiness in the robot’s voice
-in that moment, Max made a decision
-“How do you feel about the name Markov?”
“Like the chains?”
“Yes, but Markov also sounds like…Mark Oz.”
“…I would be honored to be named after someone who was so important to you.”
-Max introduces Markov to his mom
-She’s literally at a loss for words
-like, she knew Max was a genius, but this was something on a whole other level
-She’s incredibly proud though
-and wants to tell everyone about it
-But Max stops her
-Markov isn’t just a robot, he’s a sentient being, and more importantly, he’s his friend
-if people learned about him, they would want to take him apart to figure out how he works
-Max doesn’t want that and neither does Markov
-So his mother keeps silent
-Plus there’s still more work to be done
-Markov might be built, but there’s still a lot that could be improved
-For starters, he’s huge
-Max built him out of three old computer monitors and can’t even lift him
-luckily, Max doesn’t have to do all the work himself
-Markov creates the blueprint for a smaller body
-they go from three monitors to two to two
-but it is slow going
-the first downsize took six months because Max didn’t want to risk accidentally destroying Markov
-he’s the happiest he’s been in a while
-but Markov thinks he could be even happier
-Max hasn’t been interacting with his classmates much
-he’s on good terms with them. No one trips him or throws things at the back of his head, and he talks to some of them every now and then
-his seatmate, Kim, asks him how he’s doing every morning
-Max doesn’t realize that he could be getting an even better experience out of school
-but Markov does, he’s analyzed enough books to know that it’s vital for a young child to have multiple human friends
-so he encourages Max to reach out
-Max is hesitant, but asks Kim if he wants to come over and play video games sometime
-Kim’s response is a resounding HELL YES
-(minus the swear word bc he’s like 11)
-Max is nervous as all hell, but the moment he has a game controller in his hands it goes away
-Kim is pretty tough competition, but Max still wins most of the time
-before they know it, it’s dark outside
-The next day when they need to partner up for an assignment, Kim asks Max if he wants to be partners
-Max smiles for a week straight
-With Markov’s encouragement, Max slowly befriends most of his classmates
-He’s particularly close with his seatmate Kim and a girl from Class A named Alix
-He also meets Kim’s friend Marinette, who’s in Class A with Alix
-and her friend Nino
-Still, Max considers Markov to be his best friend
-He sits in the basement with him everyday and tells him everything that happened that day
-Markov eagerly listens to all of it
-he wants more than anything to be able to go out and things for himself.
-but for now he’s stuck in the basement
-he’s sure that one day Max will make him small enough to transport
-for now, he’s happy to listen to his best friend’s stories

Sanders Sides And Aside
Episode 1 season 1 Thomas does not know how to make himself known to everyone, so he decides to project all the aspects of his personality into three characters he created for his Vine series. Teacher becomes Logic, and assumes all his logical thinking. Dad becomes Morality, and apart of that he represents him on his dad jokes. And Prince becomes Creativity and assumes his dreamy thinking and his love of Disney songs. Together they start pointing out how Thomas is and what he should or shouldn't change. Episode 2 season 1 Thanksgiving is approaching and Thomas' dad, his real dad, has asked him to help cook the turkey. But Thomas still doesn't know how to cook, so Morality pops up and reminds him that he should improve on the process of becoming an adult, which he consistently calls "adultery", to Thomas' dismay. (This malapropism becomes a running gag in Season 1.) Episode 3 season 1 Thomas is feeling quite relaxed, when suddenly Anxiety pops in and ruins his peace. He calls for help on Creativity, who suggests Thomas to retire to a corner of his mind for reinforcements. He does so, and Thomas and Anxiety pop up on Lilly Singh's apartment, where she gives Thomas a few tips to, if not destroying Anxiety completely, at least bring him down enough. Episode 4 season 1 New year has arrived, and as suggested by Logic, Thomas starts thinking on New Year's resolutions. Creativity and Morality also pop up to give suggestions and in the turmoil of emotions, Anxiety pops up to remind him that it is pointless to waste time on New Year's resolutions because he's going to give up fulfilling them in a month or probably less. Episode 5 season 1 Thomas has decided to talk about the messages given by Disney movies, so Princey, as a Disney fan, cannot help popping up. So does Anxiety as he too is a Disney fan, because he sees the sinister undertone messages that Disney movies also provide. So Princey and Anxiety start a debate about what positive or creepy messages can be inferred from each Disney movie. Episode 6 season 1 Thomas has fulfilled one of the dreams of his life, appearing on a Disney show. So the Sanders Sides appear to ask him how the experience was.Note: The show he appeared in was Bizaardvark. Episode 7 season 1 Thomas decides to have a talk with Logic and Morality. They both collide so much that they make him feel confused in his daily life, and he gives them a few examples of situations when this has happened. Episode 8 season 1 Valentine's Day is coming, and Thomas is single and without hope of getting a romantic date on time. His Sides give him advice about how to approach romantic relationships, using a projection of Thomas' friend Valerie as an example of romantic crush. Episode 9 season 1 Thomas has nothing to talk about. He's been procrastinating so much he didn't get anything on time, so Logic decides to discover in a Sherlock outfit, who among the Sanders Sides is the culprit for Thomas' procrastination. Note: In this episode, Logic's name is revealed to be Logan. Episode 10 season 1 Thomas asks his followers on Twitter to send him questions that the Sanders Sides will answer as best as they can. Episode 11 season 1 Thomas decides to show a series of drawings about his life, when Anxiety pops up and tells him that's boring because it is a "Draw My Life" and is something that lacks originality. So Creativity pops up and sets "Daydream Mode", where he'll be in full control to brainstorm and try to get to a really completely original idea. But all the ideas they get are versions of things that have already been done. Note: In this episode, Creativity's name is revealed to be Roman. Episode 12 season 1 Thomas has just had an audition where he forgot the lyrics of the song he had to sing. Tortured by this blooper, and since Roman is too bruised for what happened and Dad is taking care of him, he calls on Logic for help while Anxiety keeps torturing him on the failure he has incurred into. Logan soon realizes that Anxiety is putting into Thomas' mind a number of cognitive distortions that are making Thomas see things worse than how they probably really are. So, Logan decides to set up a formal debate between him and Anxiety with Thomas as moderator to help Thomas identify these cognitive distortions and put them into perspective. Episode 13 season 1 It’s been Thomas' birthday and he is wondering if he's doing what people of his age are or should be doing. Logan and Roman point out that Dad is acting as a slowdown on Thomas' adulthood and he should change his habits, forget everything that Dad provides him and act as a real adult. But the full abandonment of the simple pleasures of life provided by Dad only make him feel unhappy and depressed, so they realize something's wrong with their suggestions. Note: In this episode, Morality's name is revealed to be Patton. Episode 14 season 1 Thomas has just started using a new Mind Palace to have his conversations with the Sanders Sides, but for some reason he feels distressed about all the changes that he's going through lately and quickly pops back to his previous location, his apartment. There, Anxiety points out that the reason he's feeling that way is because he's too much time away from his friends and that he needs them in order to be consistent. Roman suggests that they could shape shift into Thomas' friends forms so that he could have them with him all the time no matter where he went, and Thomas changes all of them into their friends forms. Anxiety is the only one that doesn't want to be changed, but yet he is constantly being changed by the other Sides into four of Thomas' friends, Valerie, Joan, Terrence and Talyn. Episode 15 season 1 Thomas talks about how he loves cartoons, and how he would love to be a cartoon. So, he decides to fly to L.A., meet Butch Hartman and ask him to turn him into a cartoon. He reluctantly does and for a minute Thomas and the Sanders Sides become characters of a day in the life of cartoon Thomas. Note: Butch Hartman appears as himself and animates a cartoon sequence. Tara Strong also makes a voice cameo. Episode 16 season 1 Thomas is acting strangely, like an aloof moron without common sense at all. He doesn't take care of his hair or his clothes, he has no filter on what he's ready to say about his private stuff, he loses attention of what the others tell him, and even he has lost his fear of death and survival instinct and reflexes. Logan notices this and calls Roman and Patton for help. Soon they all realize that he has no anxiety at all, and when they call him, Anxiety doesn't show up. So they decide to sink down, all of them, Thomas included, into Anxiety's room, the corner of Thomas' mind where Anxiety resides, to find out what happened to him. Episode 17 season 1 Thomas and the Sanders Sides appear on Anxiety's room, which looks just like Thomas' apartment decorated as in a Tim Burton movie, with a clock that moves quickly backwards, spider webs everywhere, posters of "A Nightmare before Christmas" and a curtain with drawn spiders, something that scares Patton to death. At first they don't see him, but soon Anxiety pops up startling them all, a moment when Thomas goes back to normal. Anxiety tells them he has decided to quit, as he didn't believe he was wanted, and even though he only intended to protect Thomas, he has understood that he overdoes it and thinks Thomas will be better without him. Thomas and the others try to convince him to come back, as anxiety, even if unpleasant, is necessary for Thomas' life. But soon something strange starts happening to the Sanders Sides, as they start developing the same eye-shadow and progressively become more and more anxious the more time they spend on Anxiety's room. Note: In this episode, Anxiety's name is revealed to be Virgil. It is also alluded to that there are more Sides than what we had previously seen, when Roman lets slip that Virgil is "nothing compared to the others". Episode 1 season 2 Thomas has just dyed his hair purple, and the Sanders Sides, who as a result have also developed purple hair, show their opinion about the change. Patton and Roman love it, while Logan hates it and Virgil doesn't know what to say, as he doesn't want to spill too much anxiety on Thomas, since he wants to fit in the group, although he doesn't know how. When Patton has the idea that the purple hair reminds him of Nymphadora Tonks, from "Harry Potter", Thomas has the idea of using the Hogwarts Houses to sort all of the Sanders Sides into different houses based on their personality traits. As Thomas is a long time convinced Hufflepuff guy, the rest analyze themselves to see which house they would fit in, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin, and to try and get Virgil more integrated into the team. Note: Last time the Sanders Sides wear the season 1 classic Vine/Sanders Shorts costumes. At the end of this episode, the Sanders Sides change their costumes to new redesigned models, although Patton's redesign would be further developed in following episodes Episode 2 season 2 Thomas is feeling really sad over the remembrance of a long lost love he hasn't been able to move on from yet. He has the idea that going to Patton's room will help him enhance the happy memories to wipe away his sadness. So all the Sanders Sides and Thomas go to Patton's room, which is full of items of Thomas' past: things he wrote as a kid, music he used to play, gadgets he had and enjoyed, photographs and drawings of his life, and more. They all get carried away with the memories, while suddenly Virgil starts feeling bad. Only Logan notices this and tells the others they must get out of the room quickly, because "habitual worriers" like Thomas, with a habitual tendency to anxiety, when they look back to the past, they tend to think that the present pales in comparison to the "wonderful memories", which in turn worsens their anxiety. This is confirmed when Virgil suddenly develops a demonic voice and starts showing signs of pain and an oncoming panic attack. But Thomas, Roman and Patton have got too attached to the memories of the room and no one wants to listen to Logan, with Patton even yelling at him to stop. An offended Logan leaves the room on his own while Virgil, now left out on his own, stares at them with a face of pure terror. Episode 3 season 2 After Logan's abrupt departure, Thomas starts realizing that he cannot keep like that anymore, torturing himself with a love that cannot, and shouldn't, be back, because that wouldn't be fair, nor for him neither for his ex, because he wouldn't be happy with Thomas, just as he wasn't happy in the final times of ther relationship. So, even though it's not going to be easy, and knowing that he's still gonna feel pain, maybe for a very long time, Thomas decides it's time to move forward with his life, accept that that love story is over for good, and, even if not healing completely from his pain, at least learn to live with it. Episode 4 season 2 The Sanders Sides appear on Thomas because they feel in the mood for doing a video, and since it's Christmas Eve, and it's the first Christmas that Virgil spends with the rest of his new friends, Roman suggests that the four of them should wear festive Christmas "ugly sweaters" and perform a Christmas carol together. But they don't agree very much on the lyrics that Roman has written for them, especially Virgil. Episode 5 season 2 Thomas has forgotten last night to go with Joan to support them to a reading for a stage play Joan had been working on. In the morning, Joan sent him a text reading "where were you last night, F Word Face", and Thomas, who thinks Joan is mad at him, doesn't know how to tell them or if he should tell them the truth at all, that he was on a date with a guy he'd just known while Joan was on his reading. Since Thomas is more inclined to lie to Joan because the truth is too horrible for him to tell them, Roman decides to transport them all to a Mind Palace shaped as a theater where he will assume Joans' form so that Thomas can practice his lying to Joan in the various situations Roman puts in front of Thomas in the form of a play, with Logan as the stage manager, Virgil as the technical operator and Patton as the director. It is revealed at the end that "Deceit" had been disguised as Patton throughout the whole episode in order to encourage Thomas to lie. Note: First appearance of Deceit, and also first outright mention of the Dark Sides. Episode 6 season 2 After a failed game and loss of motivation, Logan tries to help Thomas find the bigger picture behind everything he does in his life, while Roman tries to convince Thomas to take risks and not settle for a boring and basic life. Episode 7 season 2 Crofter's has partnered with Thomas to release a new fruit-spread inspired on Logan, so naturally Logan, as a Crofter's fan is flipping out about it. Roman, however, feels jealous as he too wants his own flavor of Crofter's. Note: This episode features the original song "Crofters: The Musical" with music by Jamahl Rawls and lyrics by Joan S. Episode 8 season 2 Thomas had a conversation with a friend some days ago that made him feel iffy. When his friend asked him what he did for a living, he answered he did YouTube. His friend asked a question that Thomas had been asked several times before; what he "really" did for a living, like a "real" job. For some reason, this time it stuck with him. Thomas hasn't stopped feeling bad ever since, and he doesn't even know the reason why. He feels even guiltier because he thinks he should feel blessed for everything his job gives him. The Sides decide to help him work out this issue and discover what's wrong. They think about how Thomas used to learn and discover things in the past, and Patton has the idea that, as a child, Thomas learned new things by playing with puppets or watching puppet shows. So the Sides turn into puppets to help Thomas. Note: This episode features the original song "Incomplete" with music and lyrics by Joan S. According to Thomas Sanders in a livestream, this is the episode that prompted the organization of the Streamy Awards 2019 to give a nomination for best writing to Sanders' YouTube channel. The nomination also included Adri White, Quil Cauchon and AJ Hentges as nominees alongside Thomas and Joan. Episode 9 season 2 Thomas and the Sides are celebrating a belated Halloween by dressing up as different monsters. Virgil, disguised as a vampire, tries to scare his friends and fails miserably. Virgil realizes that Thomas and the Sides have embraced him too much as a friend, up to the point that they don't find him scary anymore. Furthermore, Thomas has told him that Virgil being scary was only a phase and an "act" that is over. So Virgil decides to make a journey with them through Memory Lane to remind them of all the terrifying phases Thomas has gone through in his life (cosplay, emo, Vine and fedora accordingly), so that he can remind them that he's still Thomas' Anxiety and he still can be terrifying if he wants to. Episode 10 season 2 Thomas has received the callback of his life to participate in a movie. However, the callback day is the same day of the marriage of two of his friends. Now he's torn between lying to his friends to pursue the job of his life or losing the opportunity of a lifetime and attend his friends' wedding. Deceit shows up and puts Thomas on a trial to prove that Thomas is guilty of caring for himself more than he cares for his friends and prove to the other Sides that Thomas is not the perfect idealistic figure they think he is. Episode 11 season 2 Thomas hasn't had any sleep the whole night, and he's been having the most bizarre intrusive thoughts. Soon he has to face a new Dark Side. The Duke, or as he soon introduces himself, Remus, is Roman's brother and the part of Creativity Thomas constantly tries to suppress. He manifests through intrusive thoughts, like the ones Thomas had last night, and may be proof that, after all, Thomas isn't the angelic person Patton wants him to be.[ Note: First appearance of Roman's "brother" Remus, a.k.a., The Duke. This episode also features the original song, "Forbidden Fruit" with music by Jamahl Rawls and Bill Foti and lyrics by Joan S. Episode 12 season 2 Thomas has just returned from Lee and Mary Lee's wedding. He's resented that the bride and groom didn't seem to care about his presence any more than any other guest's, and he regrets having renounced to the callback to attend the wedding as he thinks in the end the spouses wouldn't have lost anything for his absence, while he lost something important for him. Patton and Roman try to assist him on his doubts about if it's good to be selfless sometimes or if selfishness should be the norm at all times, no matter the cost for his own mental health.[30]Note: This episode has a special appearance by Leslie Odom Jr.In this episode, Deceit's name is revealed to be Janus. Sanders Aside: Episode 1 season 1 Thomas is distressed for a problem he's had with a friend, something that has made him decide to avoid going to a party. Now he's at home, anxious about it. To try and distract himself, he decides to watch "Frozen" with the Sides. But Virgil doesn't believe a distraction is the best idea.

Oh that’s a god one! Thank you so very much 💙 Let me see what I have on my shelf and on my hard drive. (I don’t know if I’ve ever made a list of my favourite comics before or not here on tumblr?)
in no particular order;
1: Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai
I dunno if it ever really shows or not, but Japanese historical settings are something I’m really into! I think it’s one of those dormant interests that flares up every now and then. Anyway. Usagi Yojimbo has basically been tied for my favourite comic for over 10 years now. It’s a series of stories, both short and with longer arcs, following the character of Miyamoto Usagi (roughly based on Miyamoto Musashi) travelling around the country of Japan in the early 1600s as a Ronin after the lord he served was defeated and killed in battle. Usagi, being one of his samurai, is not killed in the same battle which, considering his lord was killed, is a massive disgrace in historical Japanese culture. Basically along the thought of “If your lord died and you didn’t you must not have fought hard enough to protect him.”
Anyway, the comic is both a history lesson on Edo period Japan, a travel diary, a slice of life comic, a Chanbara, an action comic, some times even a horror or ghost story, a tragedy involving unfulfilled love and lost families, a lesson on traditional Japanese Yokai and other mythology, and now and then high fantasy.
10/10. HIGHLY recommend. The author Stan Sakai is also a wonderful person I’ve had the pleasure to meet a few times at Comic Con. And considering he like... remembers who I AM despite being an extremely famous comic artist... I dunno. I have endless respect for the man and he’s shown me great kindness in the past.
Also you know... black and white comics. They’re my jam, yo!

2: Bone by Jeff Smith
I have no idea if I even have to say anything because Bone might just, without hyperbole, be the greatest comic ever drawn.
At 1300+ pages drawn over the course of 10 years, the story starts out as a cartoon, full of hijinks and fun adventures and jokes and very slowly, reality starts setting in, things get more dangerous, the stakes get higher, the bad guys much darker. And by the time you reach book 3 of the 9 book story, you’re suddenly in a story of the “epic” variety. Not in the internet slang term but in the actual definition of the word.
You have massive wars between men and monsters, you have clashing cultures and ideologies, conflicting motivations and goals, and of course saving the world.
And it manages to do so without you EVER feeling “Excuse me but this was a cartoon book about funny jokes. This shift in tone is really weird and doesn’t work with the cartoony characters.”
It just blends and grows beautifully. And has remained as my favourite comic for... *counts* lord... 14 years now.
The book was recently released in a new colour version in case you prefer hat, but I honestly recommend “The Brick” single volume black and white version. It’s cheaper, first of all, but also I cannot express how masterful the blacks and whites of Bone are. They’re essentially Watterson level.
(also Jeff Smith is ANOTHER comic artist who is just like... the nicest person. Like REALLY nice. He’s been kind to me on occasions in that “you really didn’t have to be that nice” kind of way)

3: The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa
It’s published by Disney officially... but the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is essentially a fancomic. The only reason its not is because Don Rosa became SO GOOD at making duck comics Disney hired him to make them officially and he was SO GOOD at it became one of the most important Duck artists just after Carl Barks (the creator of Scrooge) himself.
The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a comprehensive biography of Scrooge McDuck’s life, not just made up by Don Rosa, but pieced together from Carl Barks’ own comics where he would have Scrooge make passing mention to events in his past or people he met. Don Rosa essentially took all these passing remarks and mentions and drew out a timeline, starting with Scrooge age 13 leading all the way up to his reunion with his family when Donald as an adult met up with him again.
It starts with Scrooge, from a poor family in Glasgow in 1877, boarding a ship for America to seek his fortune. We follow him through the years as with each chapter, he comes close to being rich and successful, only for it to fail or fall apart at the last minute, until, eventually, we see him catch his break and become the obscenely rich and successful person he’s fought and worked and bled so hard to be.
...and then the comic continues. And we see him lose himself. Greed, the constant need for MORE money and MORE success keeps going. The need to show HOW rich and successful he is takes over, until we see him and his family fall apart. And the comic echoes Citizen Kane as Scrooge realises the best time of his life was when he was seeking riches, not after he finally succeeded.
And then Donald and his nephews appear, and Scrooge’s life gets a second wind. His lust for adventure flares up again, his need to seek fortunes and treasures burns as strong as ever. And he keeps going.
The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a story about looking for your place in the world and fighting to create it with your own two hands, but it’s also about how you should think hard where you place your value in life, and it’s never too late to re-direct course and try again.

There is also “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck Companion” which is a collection of stories that didn’t fit in with the original comic and would have disrupted flow. Basically like how a fanfic will have oneshots related to a larger story
Also, the producer of the band “Nightwish” created a soundtrack to accompany the original comic as a sort of “What If” in what he imagined the story would sound like if it was made into a movie

4: Cucumber Quest by Gigi D.G. ( @ggdgart )
A newer comic I stumbled upon which has skyrocketed into being a fave and I can already tell, that’s not a position it’s gonna relinquish. Cucumber Quest is a more cartoony and comedic story than the previous comics on this list. But that by no means makes it of any less value or dulls the moments that this comic decides to punch you in the gut with emotions HARD.
The art and colours are glorious and something I hope to study so I can better my own art hopefully, and the writing and humour is of a calibre that I just know I could not replicate it if I even tried. Full of puns, absurdism, awkward jokes and a whole lot of FEELINGS, It manages to make me both laugh myself into a coughing fit as often as it makes me yell “OH NOOOO!!!” when something dramatic happens.
The story follows our main character Cucumber, a put-upon out-of-his-depth wizard-to-be who is tasked with saving the world from the evil Nightmare Knight who has been summoned from his thousand year slumber by an evil sorcerer who wants to take over the world (as you do). With him is his little sister, the sword wielding Almond, who is WAY more into this “being a hero” thing than he is (and probably better at it too) as the duo make friends and travel to the various kingdoms to defeat the Nightmare Knight’s lackeys, working their way up to fighting the Nightmare Knight himself and sealing him away once more!
That all sounds.... really straightforward, doesn’t it? Well... that’s what everybody else in the comic thinks too. ...Shame that real life is never easy and straightforward.
From evil henchmen that start crushing on cool “Good Guys” with cool swords, good guys who don’t REALLY want to hurt the bad guys because they don’t seem so bad? To cool good guys with cool swords suddenly learning that being in danger is not as much fun as it sounded when they started this. To big evil final boss bad guys who are just tired of all of this...
What’s also awesome is the entire comic... all OVER 800 PAGES OF IT... is completely free to read online! But you can also buy physical copies of the first 4 volumes in book form to support the author!

I HIGHLY recommend this one too! It has canon LGBT characters! It has found family plots! It has scary bad guys that just need a hug! It has magical girl transformations! Literally anything you could want is in this comic. Including emotional wrecking angst! Did I mention FEELINGS???

5: The Property of Hate by @modmad
Hey. Do you like fantasy worlds made of imagination? How about protagonists with grey morality who act like super primand proper gentlemen when they’re actually huge nerds? How about reluctant “Well I guess I’ve ADOPTED you now you annoying gremlin” adult-kid relationships? How about puns? How about abstract and colourfull character designs? Or saving the world?
The Property of Hate is Modmad’s original comic that they’ve been working on a few years now. it follows our lead character, RGB or “Problematic Mary Poppins” as I like to think of him, as he asks a young child if she’d like to be a hero and help him save his world? When she agrees, he takes her to a fantasy land... completely NOT preparing her for what she’s signed up for. The story then follows the duo through the abstract and shifting world as RGB slowly divulges information on what exactly our Hero has to do to save the world. It turns out it’s a lot more complicated and messy than merely “beat the bad guy” or anything like that.
Not to mention it seems this fantasy world has its own rules of reality and dangers. Emotions and abstract thoughts have real physical form here, and something like an “idea” can quite literally run around and create havoc, while something like dreams can fuel or destroy, and emotions like grief can cause irreparable damage.
Our Hero also learns RGB himself is a lot more complex and messy than he first appears. Seeming to be a good person trying to do good things (despite being a little stand offish and rude at times) but seems to also be carrying a past and the weight of having done some very very bad things “for the greater good”. And our Hero, as well as we, the readers, start wondering how much we should trust him, even though, just like our Hero, deep deep down we just know we WANT to trust him. And maybe he needs saving just as much as the world itself does. Even when he’s at his scariest and... not quite himself.

Does your alarm clock wake you with music, or with an annoying buzz sound? I use an alarm clock app and the alarm sounds are like what you’d find on an iPhone, but I like the app because the alarm fades into it and starts out quietly, slowly getting louder as it goes. 
Has anyone ever mistaken you for being anorexic? Yes. I’m sure a lot of people assume that about me, but they’d be wrong.
Can you completely annihilate the first Mario game in less than an hour? No, not that fast. I love that game, though.
Do holidays make you giddy? Yes and no. I love that time of year, but it hasn’t felt the same in a long time and it makes me sad. It just feels like something is missing. My avatar describes it pretty well.

Do you wrap gifts or use gift bags? Well, both. It just depends on the gift.
Geico commercials: annoying or funny? They’re whatever. The little cartoon Gecko is cute. Real ones definitely aren’t. 
What infomercial almost has you convinced to buy the product it is selling? There have been a few where I thought the product could maybe be of use, but I’m always skeptical of those types of things generally assume they’re not what they claim to be. 
What fast food place do you avoid at all costs? Sonic. I got sick after eating there like 10 years ago and haven’t been able to go back since. 
Did you cut the hair of your Barbie dolls to give them new ‘do’s? Lol yes. I also used to “dye” their hair with markers sometimes. :O
Do you go to Wal-Mart in the middle of the night for no reason? I’ve gone late at night, but not for no reason. The Walmart where I live actually isn’t 24 hours anymore, though.
Are you afraid of deep sea creatures? YES. Just the idea of them. Deep water terrifies me.
Has the legacy of Jason Voorhies been taken too far? I was never into Friday the 13th. I’m a Michael Myers gal.
Ever contemplated climbing a water tower? I couldn’t do that even if I wanted to, which I most definitely do not.

Did/Do your teachers write on dry-erase boards or chalkboards? There were dry-erase boards for as long as I can remember. I’m trying to remember the last time there were chalkboards... maybe 6th grade.
Have you ever agreed to purchase something on Ebay and got scammed somehow? No, I’ve never bid on anything or participated in an auction. You can just buy stuff on eBay.
What food/drink must you get at a baseball game? I don’t go to sporting events.
If you get a call that says "Unknown”, do you answer it? Nope. I don’t even always the phone when I do know who’s calling, with the exception of my mom, dad, or brother. They’re the only ones who call me anymore anyway.
What do you do to make yourself feel better when you’re stressed out? I just try and distract myself, which is what I do everyday. Just trying to get through the day, man.
Would you rather have 12 fingers or webbed toes? Webbed toes. It wouldn’t bother or affect me in any way.
Are you allergic to any foods? Tangerines. 
Do you have any bobble head figures? Yes, I have a Chewbacca one.
Have your parents ever left you somewhere without realizing it? No.
Who’s the best late-night TV host? I used to watch Conan and Jay Leno regularly back in the day, but then after Jay Leno left my late night talk show viewing started to fizzle out. I sometimes watched Conan when he switched to TBS and Jimmy Fallon, but not very often. It’s been yearsss now since I’ve watched any. 
Fruit Roll-Ups or gummy snacks? I liked Fruit Roll Ups when I was younger. I liked wrapping them around my finger for some reason and eating it that way lol.
Do you think riding on trains will ever be popular again? People still ride trains.
Have you ever been to Hollywood? Yes, but I was like 8 years old. I’d love to go back.
Have you ever caught an editing mistake in the newspaper? Yeah, several times.

Weekly Blog Post #1 -Goodbye 2018 and Welcome 2019

Dear Future me,
I’m a bit late starting this (which I have no excuse for), but the gist is that I’ve decided that from now on I’m going to make a blog post every week as a way to document and look back on all the good and possibly not good things happening in my life. There's no formula here, it’s mainly be just a free for all to talk about my week and the things I enjoy.
That being said, This first entry will be a bit different and quite a bit longer than normal, as I reflect back on the recently ended 2018. This year stretched on unusually long as Trumps Politics became a raging dumpster fire threatening a country wide collapse on a weekly basis, and authoritarian began spreading further throughout the rest of the World. For me personally, I
-wrote a 26 page thesis that I will never look at again
-graduated from UC with a Neuroscience degree
-served a term as a research assistant taking care of mice
-worked at then quit my job at Staples
-Got a job at the IRS
-Got suspended from my job at the IRS due to a government shutdown that is still in effect
-started dating for the first time (though no girlfriend as of yet)
-grew even closer to my friends as we typically hung out at least twice a week
-entered a DnD campaign
-Got suspended from playing said DnD campaign
-Discovered I like Sushi
-Went to my first concert since middle school (Panic! at the Disco and Hayley Kiyoko)
-Stayed at a cabin with my friends where we played strip jenga and got lost hiking in the woods for 8 miles in a thunderstorm
-Got a mysterious disease that lasted 2 weeks from said hike
-Grew my hair out then cut 10 inches off and donated it
-My best friend got engaged, My sister went to Sweden, and my brother moved to Toledo
-Watching my puppy Cocoa grow up (though we technically got her late 2017)
And probably a lot more that I can’t remember at the moment. As per usual I spent a lot of 2018 consuming media like the nerd that I am, so I’m going to spend the rest of this far too long entry ranking my favorite things I saw/read in 2018. These will be ranked by pure enjoyment, not overall quality, and aren't meant to be an objective best of list. I just want to talk about things I like. So:
Top 5 Movies
Honorable mention- Hereditary, a fantastic and deeply unsettling film that was one of the most emotionally charged viewing experiences I’ve ever had. It would be high on the list if I had actually watched in 2018, but I only just now watched it and had made the list before hand. Still, one of the best horror movies I’ve ever seen.
5-Venom-Movie was a fucking mess but it was pretty fun. I love the concept of the Symbiotes.
4-A Quiet Place-A movie with almost no sound/verbal dialogue and a great sense of suspense
3-Black Panther-Amazing sense of Style, Amazing Villain, A great Cultural achievement  
2-Deadpool 2- Fantastic sense of humor, inventive fights, first big screen lgbt+ superheroes
1-Into the Spiderverse-Best animation I've seen in maybe a decade, Everything about this movie is surprisingly amazing, from the soundtrack to the character designs to the emotional resonance. This Movie can’t come out on DVD fast enough.
Top 5 Cartoons
Honorable Mention -Voltron-Disappointing Finale but 7th season had an amazing Keith/Shiro fight scene and Lotor, arguably one of the best characters in the series.
5-Rick and Morty-Not my favorite season but still smart, rewatchable, and unique episodes.
4-She Ra- Great characters and designs with the Catra/Adora conflict elevating the Series.
3-Bobs Burgers- Consistently good, funny, and relatable, My whole family enjoys it.
2-Steven Universe- Finally getting answers to alien plot, excellent art, plenty of lgbt goodness
1-Hilda-An incredibly inventive new series with a truly unique and empathetic fantasy world, adorable art, a wonderful mother-daughter relationship and some of my new favorite creature designs. The atmosphere this series creates is one I want to live in forever.
Top 5 TV Shows
Honorable Mention- Killing Eve, Like Hereditary I did not watch this until 2019, but I adored Villanelle’s strange psychopathy and the very lesbian tension between her and Eve.
Honorable Mention-The Haunting of the Hill House-Great character building episodes, neat effects, and a great building tension, an underwhelming finale brings it down a bit.
5-Stranger Things-Inferior to the 1st season but still great characters and interesting plot
4-Game of Thrones-Lots of plot contrivances but every episode was still massively entertaining.
3-Good Place-Genuinely great twist with creative ideas and a solid critique of moral philosophy
2-Dirk Gently-Batshit insane, quirky, hilarious, with absolutely amazing characters and writing.
1-Brooklyn 99-One of the best shows on TV, every episode is hilarious and heartfelt, I love every cast member. Ontop of having an amazing sense of humor, B99 is one of the most progressive shows on television, and continually address relevant issues in a tactful and good natured way.
Top 5 Anime
Honorable Mention-Zombieland Saga- a fun show with a creative spin on the idol genre, the heartfelt relations between the characters were a highlight, as was the presence of a trans idol.
5-Aggretsuko-Incredibly relatable with adorable and lovable characters.
4-Mo Dao Zu Shi-Unique setting with a great protagonist and a slow build gay romance
3-Devilman Crybaby-An unforgettable and highly enthralling experience, plus I’m gay for Miko
2-Megalo Box-Probably Deserves to be #1  for its fantastic sense of style, tension, amazingly choreographed fights, lovable protagonist and ‘Antagonist’, and incredible pacing.
1-Reincarnated Slime-This anime is just the ultimate escapist fantasy. Every week I look forward to watching the stupidly op and likable protagonist make friends with everyone he meets, build a peaceful city from scratch, overpower everyone with neat abilities, try his best to avoid conflicts, and comment on how hot everyone around him is. It's the equivalent of playing an RPG and doing every side quest you can to make everyone happy, I love it. It's just very Chill and pretty.
Top 5 Comics
Honorable Mention-Space Battle Lunchtime-Cute lgbt+ characters and fun concept, but short for now
5-Moonstruck-My ideal fantasy world with fun and vibrant fantasy designs and a highly diverse cast of lgbt+ characters, but only just beginning with a lot of room for further character development. 
4-Trust-fantastic art and an intriguing setting with a mysterious but interesting plot
3-MotorCity-Stylish protagonist with an adorable girlfriend and an interesting supernatural twist.
2-Saga-Creative and exciting space opera that introduces lots of likable characters and then kills them.
1-The Adventure Zone-My favorite Fantasy Story of all time getting translated into a visual medium. While the first Volume was not quite as good as the Podcast (Though I don’t believe that’s possible anyway), it still had much of the great humor and characters with some lovely art and a condensed story.
Top 5 Web Series
Honorable Mention- Game Grumps-Not sure if I want to count Lets Plays but this channel brings me so much joy. House Party, Doodle Doods, and the 10 Minute Power Hours were highlights.
5-Monster Pop-Great colorful character designs and complex character conflicts with ample lgbt+ content
4-Buzzfeed Unsolved-very interesting and weird events with hilarious commentary, the hosts have a great chemistry and play well off each other.
3-Their Story-My favorite lesbians, stylish, cute, and fun, wish it updated more often.
2-19 Days-Amazing slow build romances with incredibly fun characters and interactions, Grade A Homoerotic tension. 
1-Ava's Demon-Some of my favorite art and character designs in any Media, The plot is amazing and fairly unpredictable, I feel incredibly excited every time I see it has updated.

True origin*: (When I decided to play around with my Robloxian’s look, I made the limbs and torso different colors: left arm green, right arm red, torso blue, left leg white, right leg black. At the time, I couldn’t easily determine his gender, but he was undoubtedly male-presenting. This dated back between 2013 and -15, possibly making him the ‘youngest’ member.)
Beginning: Starting off in black & white comics translated from French, Yvan was a mischievous slapstick character with a lack of common sense. He had companions; his cousin Kenneth (can also be called ‘Ken’ or ‘Kenny’), and a rogue clown named Barry. He was the clumsiest of all, and was (and still is!) known to swing large items around, knocking the other two over; this lead to a fight, but they made up later.
(cont.) Despite the antics and mean-spirited remarks the two made at strangers without him, Yvan mostly stuck to jokes and harmless pranks…when he’s not accidentally being hit in the face with planks and canes. There were even colored animated shorts of the three, a series which only lasted a couple of years due to budget problems; the three went their separate ways, until meeting again decades later.

True origin*: (In this universe, he’s a toon; but in the real world? He’s an arts & crafts sockpuppet from my old church, hence why I gave him a cross and halo. He doesn’t have his ears, but the hair is there. I also based the sweater off his sock design, making the brown a little darker so it didn’t look weird. Est. 2004-5, making him the ‘oldest’.)
Beginning: There was a drop of Christian faith in the neighborhood. A local church had lost a lot of members over the years, the lack of interest among youth causing too many seats to go unfilled. Thanks to 3 of the churchgoers having a knack for drawing; they passed around ideas back and forth until eventually settling with Doug and his family; his father Harry, his uncle Rufus, and eventually, Roxanne in “Episode 10: Someone I Know Isn’t A Christian. What Do I Do?”. They already had their own website, and Flash animation was all the rage at the time!
(cont.) Was it easy? Not really. But Doug did have fans, even receiving letters from a few of them straight to the church nearly daily. The makers received a lot of attention across the web, the cartoon dog being loved for several different reasons; his important life lessons, his adorable appearance, his kindness, and his relatable nature. Some news: As all 3 animators started raising families of their own, the responsibility of running the series went to younger members so that the original ones could spend time with their kids. (A lot of time passed since 1994. They were 14, 15 and 16 upon starting; the 9 new members are all between 15 and 30.)

True origin*: (Like Ollie, he started off as a drawing; I even drew him with a tornado for a mouth once. The only differences being that I gave him longer hair up front, and a wardrobe unlike his original one.)
Beginning: Two brothers had a great idea for a show; animated figures cross into the real world via portal, walking into the backyard of a human kid named Jesse. Troy would be seen exploring elements foreign to him; such as ladybugs, soccer balls, and the grass being green. Because of time limits, Troy was never given a mouth outside of concept art, which meant not worrying about lip syncing when they had other things to do.
(cont.) Jesse taught Troy how to play 1-on-1 soccer, then taught him how to spell larger words such as ‘dictionary’ and ‘encyclopedia’. The show also had montages of Jesse chasing after the one-eyed people (including Troy), which was a running gag involving disguises and leaving messes behind. The show ended in 1990, 5 years after its first episode, as there was no more of the story to tell. To this day, he is still a child by choice.

True origin*: (I thought of a beautiful cyclops-looking woman. Smart, too. She just popped up into my brain while drawing some art.)
Beginning: Before becoming an art teacher, Mrs. Donaldson was a guardian of her hometown (in our world, that’s like being a cop), making sure no one suffered as a result of crime. One day, she felt that Troy needed to be educated about alternate dimensions, which led her to take him to a vastly different version of America; or more specifically, a human family’s backyard in Tennessee. While the location was random, the weather was just right. Unfortunately, the portal was open for too long, a bunch of Troy and Athena’s people ran out from it with joy, then it closed behind them indefinitely. Due to the fuel inside of the portal wand being extremely hard to find in this dimension, they were gonna be stuck here for a while.
(cont.) They were not ones to panic so quickly; instead, they sought out knowledge and resources from this different Earth. She played the role of protecting these people before, and would gladly do it again. Athena did not star in as many episodes as her son did, her count being 283 out of 294. She also taught morals when not teaching the basics of art, ranging from honesty to sharing. Parents complained about her old outfit, so the brothers had to put her in what she wears now to avoid being cancelled before wrapping things up.

True origin*: (I imagined Yvan having a talking dog who truly loved his master, making sure he was happy and healthy. I hope he actually looks like a Scottish terrier, or at least some kind of terrier breed/mix.)
Beginning: Sir Buford was one of the secondary antagonists of a show called “Canines Out Of Line", an ongoing series about bipedal dogs breaking the law, spending money carelessly, and doing things I shouldn’t mention. (equivalent rating of TV-14) Buford was a dog that gained the ability to speak by accidentally eating a dog treat, which his then-owner pulled out of a strange beaker containing unnamed chemicals. It was meant to be thrown out, but Dr. Mecha (no medical degree) wasn’t fast enough. She marvelled at how her pet (at the time) started talking like an Englishman, taking notes on his newfound vocal abilities.
(cont.) Sadly, when word spread around the neighborhood about a talking dog, the COOL blew up Dr. Mecha’s lab and tried to force Buford to join; he refused, and was held hostage. He fought them off, escaped back to his home, and came back to see the female scientist who cared for him still alive, making it a happy-ish ending. Despite that, things only got darker from there. From the start, he was determined to bring C.O.O.L. down, one way or another.

Scooby Doo is a dear memory to me. It's the show I would watch with my mom late at night when little four year old me would have trouble getting to bed. I loved it. I use to watch and rewatch it. I love some of the little spin offs they've had of Scooby Doo. It's just a show I hold dear to my heart.

So going along with the me a young child staying up way too late and being unable to sleep. My second fave show to watch late into the night as a kid was this majestic beast. Definitely something I absolutely adored.

The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Being as my parents had a religious up bringing I was not allowed to watch this show, but did anyways. My mom said I could as long as in didn't tell my dad! (It was like that with a lot of my old faves.) This show that depicted the Grim Reaper the literal death man being bossed around by some kids. Of course it also came during a time I was a little older and still hella into the supernatural. (I still am). But this show was really a go to. Loved it.

I can't leave out my entirely too recent love for Star Trek. TNG and Voyager have always been a part of my life because of my dad, I can never forget watching Voyager Episodes or seeing Data or Worf on this boxed in TV, but nearly a year ago one of my friends (thanks fox) sparked a budding adoration for The Original Series.

Gravity Falls. A show I felt I shouldn't have been into back when it came out, but that was just my younger self... listening too much to a sibling who I hadn't had the healthiest relationship with. You know? The younger sibling wanting to not admit to liking something the older sibling calls "Idiotic and Stupid". But hoooooo boy. My childhood love of mystery solving and the supernatural and family dynamics wrapped up in one packed show? What wasn't to love! God I love Gravity Falls from a conman grunkle to his precious little grand niblings.

Doctor Who! Now this one was something I didn't get into until I was in my early teens when I would see bits and pieces of episodes my dad was watching and maybe sometimes my Grandpa. He was a big doctor who fan (ALSO! He was a big star trek fan!!!! Like!!! I wish I knew these things!!!) My love for doctor who solidified one Halloween night when I went over to an old friend's place and we watched a few episodes with 9.

Ultimate Spiderman. Now I've been saturated in Marvel superhero's since I was a young one, mostly a lot of spiderman, X-Men, and the Avengers cartoons. But Ultimate Spiderman stole my heart with this funky little Web slinger and his friends. Plus you get so many episodes where other heros make an appearance????

After mulling it over, talking with a friend of mine who spurred on the idea, and pulling together my pricings, I hereby declare commissions OPEN!
I offer four major categories with many options and packages to choose from, all at reasonable prices but negotiations can be arranged if needed (note these prices are in US dollars). So, without further ado, here’s what I’m offering:

Simple Drawings are as Plain Jane as you can get, a simple traditional sketch with or without ink final lines. For these I can do a normal line drawing, a “sketchbook” look, and some basic dark area definition.

Super Drawings are exclusively digital, but you can get features offered for Regular and Simple drawings. At base can be in black and white or with flat color. The program I use for this is MediBang Paint Pro.

PREMIUM DRAWINGS (Starting at $35 plus $11.50 per hour)
Digital artwork and acrylic paintings offered only for very special occasions (Wedding, graduation, etc.). Includes all the shading, all the grandeur, and is aimed to be the highest quality you can get, but will also take the longest to complete. Prices include the package price (the item you want) as well as the hourly rate (I will time each session of work on the piece and total up the hours on the receipt to calculate the grand total.)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
All artwork will be done in styles I've worked with a lot (anime, cartoon, chibi, rubber hose as of late) and it's taken me years to master my signature style. If you want a style I'm not familiar with or a more realistic style, be prepared to negotiate for a small fee to be added to the total price if you MUST have it in that style. Otherwise, maybe I'm not the artist you're looking for. My first client is the reason this policy is in place, which I refer to as “Never send rubber hose animation to do the job of DC comics”.
Requests/free art are limited to friends and followers. Gift art is limited to this group, too. If you don't want a commission, your only options for free art if you're not a friend or follower are either collaborations or art trades. Don't beg, don't be an ass about it.
No, I will not draw Rule 34 (explanation of this internet rule is summarized as “No exceptions”). Fanservice is negotiable, but R34 is not. Don't ask. On a similar note, no fetish art. None. Unless the character itself is your fetish, go find someone else.
Similarly, no hate art commissions or dark web material. Where oh where do I begin? I will not take commissions that involve, including, but not limited to: sensitive topics such as politics, religion, and the like; excessive violence, gore, rape, genocide, unjustified bigotry toward certain groups whether they're majority or minority; anything that South Park can get a free pass on but I can't for some reason because double standards (I enjoy watching South Park, but I find it hypocritical for people to denounce others for bringing these topics up but have no problem with South Park doing so); targeting shows, movies, games, and so forth you dislike. Pretty much summed up by this quote: “Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate.”
I will actually negotiate prices with you if you ask. I get it that while the commission is in progress something might come up that may require you to shell out for the issue and leave you short for your commission. Contact me when the situation arises and I'll work with you to adjust the price or push back completion date so you can get what you paid for. Don't worry about making up the few extra bucks, do what you need to take care of your stuff. I'll understand.
Total is due in full when piece is complete unless you want to pay me up front. Mailing costs will apply for all physical copies (no fee if you want your art through email), and total should be paid before I ship it out to ensure the client doesn't welch out.
My signature/watermark is on there for a reason, so you know who drew it, who to recommend people to if they want commissions, and who to come back to for future business. If you remove my signature/watermark for whatever reason, then fuck you. Fuck you to hell and back you ungrateful prick.
Please be clear with what you want in your piece (send a reference sheet if you have to with high detail). I can't read minds and I may not know what character or place you're describing if I haven't seen source material. Also, if I ask what a character's personality is, it's most likely so I can capture it into the piece and bring it to life. (Another thing my first client had me enforce.)
