Hello, anon! This got wildly out of hand, so it's all going under a cut.

Xicheng: Could Ship It

Borrowing this additional option I saw floating around!

I'm not strongly opposed to it, but it's hard for me to see them making it work in a canon universe. The fanart is very cute, though! And I've read some AUs that I thought made a good case, but they involved some thoughtful interventions.

What potential do you see in the ship?

Honestly, like, I just want them to both have something nice, they've had such a hard time. They both understand the hard work and sacrifices involved in sect leadership. I think the argument for it goes something like Jiang Cheng gets a person on his side who is kind to him, and Lan Xichen gets someone who's very reliable and also pretty direct, to heal his presumed post-canon trust issues.

What aspect makes you hesitant?

It just doesn't seem to me that they really enjoy each other? Like I believe they get along just fine and have a comfortable working relationship. I don't think they dislike each other, even. But they don't seem particularly close, even though they're of a rank and have been working with each other for years and years. I want my blorbo (Jiang Cheng) to be loved for his bad personality, not in spite of it!

I also think they would really struggle to communicate—Lan Xichen prefers to smooth things over, but Jiang Cheng reads too much reserve or politeness as rejection and, uh, gets reactive (thank you Jiang Fengmian for giving him the MOST deranged daddy issues, for real). Actually, I think Lan Xichen has a lot of potential to push a lot of Jiang Cheng's dad-related buttons just because of his temperament. (Maybe that's a plus? CRUNCHY.)

It also has the potential to cause some new and exciting political problems for them, which they both prefer to avoid.

Chengxian: Ship It

These two make me fuckin' insane!

What made you ship it?

Two things:

Their mutually happy childhood relationship, their initially compatible dysfunctions (Jiang Cheng is easily embarrassed but secretly wants affection, Wei Wuxian is bad at boundaries and WILL die if you don't pay attention to him -> Wei Wuxian touching Jiang Cheng all the time and receiving his attention, making both of them happy). Their enjoyment of each other. I love a badly-boundaried and devoted teenage relationship, it's delightful. Even before chengxian completely rotted my brain out, there was something specifically appealing about the Lan summer camp era.

The double golden core reveal took me out. I found Wei Wuxian's decision completely appalling to begin with, like viscerally disgusting. (I find it interesting when antis accuse Jiang Cheng of pretending to be upset when he finds out, or of not caring where the new core came from, because I, reader who did not get nonconsensual magic surgery, profoundly Did Not Like It. If it was my own body, I would freak out.) It's a fascinating combination of obsessive devotion and total denial of agency. Wei Wuxian is just like, "Don't worry, I will invent new and unheard of methods of violation for your own good because I can't cope with your despair." That's deranged, my dude. That is Not Normal. And then you find out that Jiang Cheng lost the core saving Wei Wuxian, and he plans to NEVER TELL HIM ABOUT IT. God damn it.

I don't even really care if they kiss, although it's fun when they do. Just reconcile! Reconcile!

What are your favourite things about the ship?

In no particular order:

In a text that is largely pro-Wei Wuxian—not in the sense that everything he does is moral, but in the sense that he's the cool protagonist, and he gets to kick ass and solve mysteries and have a happy ending—this relationship is one that highlights his weaknesses and failures in a very humanizing way. And in order to reconcile, he would actually really have to challenge himself and grow as a person, which I love for him. (I also think Jiang Cheng would have to struggle for it, but, like, dude has demonstrated the capacity to do hard and terrible things even when confronted with his own weaknesses. He's not gonna be cool about it, and he's going to cry and bitch the whole time, but if he thinks it needs to be done and it can be done, he'll do it.)

The lack of boundaries within the relationship, which is a product of the lack of clarity of the type of relation to each other. Are they friends? Are they martial brothers or real brothers? If Wei Wuxian is Jiang Cheng's shixiong, but Jiang Cheng is also Wei Wuxian's sect leader, which takes precedence? (It's clear what should take precedence, but Wei Wuxian just straight-up does not Respect His Authority, even though—by all available evidence—Jiang Cheng is a really good leader. But that lack of respect is also a form of intimacy.) It's super, super messy.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

By lying to him so extensively, and then by failing to show up for any of his commitments without any explanation, Wei Wuxian really did betray Jiang Cheng a whole bunch of times, and Jiang Cheng's resulting betrayal trauma really is his fault.

You break it, you bought it, coward! Stop running away! (For legal purposes, this is a joke.)

Having Sandara there in it now, seeing how she clicks with Andy and feeling the serene calm she brings to his world draws Logan in. She’s someone who understands creatures in monsters in a way that parallels his own understanding, but also expands upon it. He wants to learn more even if the two have their own views on monsters and such. Sandara helps soothe his rough spots and feel warm.

I thought I’d say Justice, but surprised myself to put Owen down instead. He’s there from the beginning when Sandara is up and about after Justice saves her from the desert. He’s putting up a room for her, free of charge while Mason hurries to take advantage of her presence and retire out early, clearing the shack for her if she wants it after she expresses looking for a job to provide for herself. He’s fascinated by the stories and having been a traveler himself before coming back to Sandrock, he wants to hear of the world again. The places he didn’t go to. He avoids the touchy topics and lets her relive the world she’s lost. Sometimes, he writes her stories that he’d never share with the town, just for her eyes, of her world that he keeps alive within pages of a notebook.

(It's been years since the last time I read any PJO... I basically only really remember the Olympians series and I don't really understand their appeal, so, enlighten me? 😆)

OKAY SO!

Nicercy is one of those ships that has this one particular Gay Yearning appeal for me personally as a gay. That "it's canon in a one-sided capacity, on the gay side" and most gays have been there, in love with a straight friend. So there is an element of wish-fulfillment with these kind of ships there for me. The "but what if he WASN'T straight?" (and that is an argument to be had about Percy a lot all the time), so what if Nico could HAVE his first love.

What if Nico could have the guy he's been in love with for years. The guy he's been mooning over to Hades about in canon. The guy he's been challenged about by Cupid himself.

By all things given in canon, Nico's love for Percy is set up in such epic and tragic proportions - from the very beginning, with that tentative crush but then Percy promises to protect Nico's sister and then Nico's sister dies on Percy's watch and Nico wants to hate Percy, but Nico can never hate Percy because Nico is already in love with Percy at this point, so Nico spends all of the PJO series protecting Percy, torn in his own feelings and desires.

And what if it doesn't have to be a tragedy. And what if it doesn't have to be that "gay in love with the Straight Protagonist", what if the fucking god of love and desire didn't have to forcibly out him for naught about his first love that leads to nothing? What if Nico can actually have that first love?

There is so much wish-fulfillment and yearning stored in the Nico side of this ship for me, as the shipper. A yearning to see this be happy instead of tragic, my own yearning, not just Nico's canonical yearning on the pages. But also that. Lot of yearning.

All the things Nico did, in canon, for the specific canonical reason of being in love with Percy. The way he risked his life in the labyrinth trying to save Percy, how Nico was the only one looking for a way to save Percy's life from the Great Prophecy - not the genius daughter of Athena, not Lord Poseidon the actual god, not Chiron, or anyone else at camp, only Nico and he was the one to find the Curse of Achilles that in the end did save Percy's life throughout the war - and Nico stood up to Hades himself to protect Percy, Nico was one of the few people who went out there searching for Percy when Hera abducted him. Nico's dedication to Percy is what really cements them as one of my all time biggest ships.

And with everything that Percy has been through in both wars, that is the kind of love I think he deserves. Someone who is willing to fight at his side, someone looking out for him, someone standing at his side and ready to protect him too.

I think that this is the love that they both deserve.

Then there is the obvious power contrast appeal of the underworld and the ocean. Just, that in itself is something that really appeals to me, to be honest? The pure, raw, overwhelming might of these incredibly powerful demigods?

How did they first meet?

While Homelander was still in the lab, shortly before his debut. Madelyn was still working on her career inside the company, and someone tipped her off about Homelander and that he would be rolled out to the public soon. A mentor of hers indicated this new "super-supe" would need someone to manage him, and she could fill that role, so she took a trip to the lab to see what she was getting herself into. They didn't really interact much, she just watched him demonstrate some of his powers, and he introduced himself to her (as a form of lab-supervised practice in social interaction).

2. What was their first impression of each other?

He pretty much developed a crush right away and beat himself up for stuttering during his self-intro. She was actually pretty impressed by his powers, recognized the opportunity and then spent the next couple of months positioning herself so that she would become the one managing him.

3. Did any of their friends or family want them to get together?

I'm going to not be cruel to either character by commenting on the false premise of the question and simply say: No.

4. Who felt romantic feelings first?

Homelander

Madelyn would have shut down any kinds of feelings

I could see HL buying into that.

Madelyn would be alive. Homelander would have still been very messed up in the head because of how he was raised, but not meeting her would have removed one layer of fucked-upness from his life.

Madelyn after noticing he HL had a crush on her. Homelander would not have dared to make a move. She also kept him in a state of uncertainty about their relationship, handing affection out as a reward.

Yes, as one of their practice sessions teaching HL how to navigate the world outside the lab. Something like this.

A strategic reward, and a big surprise for him.

LiuShen yes. Sorry I'm new so idk whether there's a specific shen usually attributed to this ship name. I'm assuming shen yuan though??? (Either Shen Yuan or Shen Jiu honestly.... I just love liu qingge so like.... I'm gonna be Favorable to any ship with him in it. )

Liu qingge & shen yuan my preferred dynamic is canon man .... stupid bricks for brains jock realizes he has feelings after his prickly, nerdy senior gives him the tiniest scrap of affection, but that nerd is even denser than Liu qingge so neither of them notice.

Man I love unrequited ships so much...... like. Guard dog Liu qingge would throw his life away for this oblivious emotional black hole of a man who gets gold in the mental gymnastics for how far back he has to bend to justify his first thought upon seeing the war God being "[a face] as beautiful as a fine woman's" ((what the fuck shen yuan)) like....... fuckin sucks that it takes literally trying to merge realms together for shen yuan to realise his feelings Liu qingge never had a chance!!! :(

I love the Concept of Liu qingge forever on the cusp of realizing he loves this fool of a man but just. Never thinking about it. For whatever reason. Just. What would it matter anyways, no need to put effort into that when he could track down a massive beast and fight that instead, and if shen qingqiu could use some of the spare parts, well. That's just a bonus.

Anyways. I think they'd also be cute together I just love angst ahaha.

I think a fun AU for LiuShen would be... ugh I'm torn. Witcher au though. Liu Qingge as the Witcher in question but he just follows scholar Shen Qingqiu around because Shen Qingqiu wants to record a bestiary from life and Liu Qingge is like. Yes. Completely normal behavior.

But also.... maybe a werewolf au where Shen Yuan finds an abnormally large dog in a huge bit of trouble and jumps in to help... accidentally jumping into an urban fantasy magical realism underworld of supernatural creatures and making himself a target of powerful enemies. The big dog turns out to be a werewolf who is (of course) liu qingge who ends up staying close to shen yuan's side to pay him back and also protect him.

I think either would work well with them haha, plenty of opportunity for them to be dense about each other.

Zhanchengxian: Ship it!

What made you ship it?

I love chengxian and I'm not opposed to wangxian, so it started off as, like, sure, why not! Wei Wuxian has two hands! We can bring all the unresolved business and tension of chengxian into wangxian and see if something interesting happens!

Then I got the zhancheng brainrot real bad, so. That was that.

What are your favourite things about the ship?

I like it for a lot of the same reasons I like chengxian, namely that it pushes on Wei Wuxian's and Lan Wangji's weaknesses in an interesting way. Wei Wuxian because Jiang Cheng is a reminder of all of the suffering of his past life that he wants to escape; and Lan Wangji because he's projected a lot of his own guilt at not intervening in Wei Wuxian's first life onto Jiang Cheng. I think, for a long time, Lan Wangji has had very simple, black-and-white opinions about Jiang Cheng, which are reinforced by how partial he is to Wei Wuxian, and additionally driven by jealousy at their prior intimacy. But it's much harder to maintain these ideas about someone up close, rather than afar with minimal contact. Basically, I love it when people are forced to actually perceive Jiang Cheng as, like, a real person who was seriously damaged by his terrible life, and who has triumphed over odds that someone like Lan Wangji, beloved second son of his alive family, has never had to confront.

Also love the ways in which this triad has the potential to illuminate the people and relationships within it! Lan Wangji can see Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng more clearly in the context of their relationship to each other; I think it's a relationship where Wei Wuxian's worse qualities are often evident. (This is not a backhanded compliment! Intimacy is sometimes seeing someone you love be kind of a dink! Perceive him!) Lan Wangji, meanwhile, might be a stabilizing force for chengxian; if he can help Wei Wuxian regulate himself, Wei Wuxian might actually be able to show up and be vulnerable. I don't know if Wei Wuxian would get anything out of zhancheng except horniness, but I bet he'd have fun.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Wei Wuxian has a lot of work to do within the chengxian branch of the relationship, and Lan Wangji shielding him from that work sucks and is bad for everybody. Also, the evolution into zhanchengxian should transform and develop wangxian (for example, through insight into Wei Wuxian's childhood dynamic with Jiang Cheng, the revelation that Wei Wuxian left the Jiang rather than being expelled, etc.) not just be wangxian with Jiang Cheng grafted on.

Sangcheng: Ship it!

What made you ship it?

Sangcheng was actually my gateway MDZS ship, and Nie Huaisang was my gateway blorbo. Although the Jiang Cheng brainrot has firmly set it, I'm still very fond of Nie Huaisang.

Also, their shenanigans in the Cloud Recesses were very charming. Let them get a little silly and explore each others' bodies!!

What are your favourite things about the ship?

There are a lot of potential sangcheng flavours! Cloud Recesses-era sangcheng is markedly different from post-canon sangcheng. They both got a lot worse, for starters.

Sometimes it's nice to give Jiang Cheng a partner who has some separation from Wei Wuxian. I love him in the Wei Wuxian Suffering Vortex, but really the healthiest choice is for Jiang Cheng to have at least one relationship with someone who is just into him on his own merits. He has them!! It's not impossible!!

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I'll accept a range of Nie Huaisangs, since he is such a puzzlebox of a character, but you gotta give the guy some depth. Like, he did a multi-year revenge scheme and stabbed himself in the leg to accomplish it. He's not a simple or shallow guy.

Owen’s someone who was probably a man of more bravado and a bit of cockiness but he’s mellowed out significantly since settling back in Sandrock and getting older. Rosalie having a man like Owen love her would definitely keep her safe should her temper and opinions ever anger an individual that can’t handle being called out on their shit by her or they severely disagree. Not saying she can’t handle herself, but not everyone is so gentle or easy to fight. Owen’s a man of brute strength and specializes in hand to hand combat. You can expect him to instinctively step in without thinking and keep her safe. Plus, I mean a storyteller and a girl that looks like she descended from royalty??? He’s swooning.

Tbh I can see some reservation on both their parts, but if I recall correctly, Rosalie was from Sandrock? So if he knows her, then less reservation but more so because he knows her and would hesitate. Rosalie keeping true to her roots despite taking a different path in life during their childhood would definitely intrigue him and leave him thinking about her from time to time before he realizes he may have feelings. But they’ll have to pass the baton on being the levelheaded one from time to time because both seem quick act on impulse. Not that Logan kinda seeing it though lmao

I thought I’d go with Grace on this, but tbh I can see Heidi being a better match for Rosalie. Both women are true to who they are and like Owen, Heidi is someone who has great self control and rational thinking. AND LIKE OWEN, but far deadlier, Heidi can also throw a bone crushing punch to defend her girl if she needs to. While Heidi is confident in majority of the things she does, I think she’d be the one that’s shy in confessing so Rosalie may have to be the one to step up for that.
