This year’s WoD mini-exchange was my first year participating, except I don’t think the memo about “mini” reached me because I wrote my giftee 11K of middle-aged hot mess Draco and middle-aged thirst trap Harry getting together through a giant misunderstanding that, for a change, really isn’t their fault, not completely anyway.

This fic turned out nothing like I thought it would but I have thank my precious @nv-md for talking me out of a block and supporting a do-over. I must also thank my bestie @phd-mama for some keen insights, my cactus @phoebe-delia for effortlessly improving a conversation between Draco and Pansy and giving me alliteration advice, and my hedgehog @basicallyahedgehog for their keen eyes, running commentary and endless enthusiasm. Without these four heroes my giftee would undoubtedly still be waiting for her gift!

🪄what is your post-writing/sharing aftercare? How do you take care of yourself or celebrate yourself when you've finished a fic?

Hello!

Oh this is a really good question! To be honest with you, what I often do after finishing a fic is... start a new one 😅

My list of WIPs and to-be-WIPs is a bit endless at the moment. I'm working on some fest fics, and I've got 2 long Drarry works in the pipeline (independent of fest works), and a couple of shorter works I'd like to complete too. I've also got a whole inbox of prompts I'd like to get round to replying to as well.

And then there's my OF...

I'm often feeling my best when I'm writing, so I'm not very good at taking breaks inbetween 🫠

After I finished Under Giant Mountains, I did take a bit of a step back and I spent a few weeks doing no fic-related things, and to be honest with you, it was really lovely and just the reset I needed. I spent my 'me' time (rather than my working/social time) relaxing and watching films, catching up with TV shows, that sort of thing.

Christmas 2023

One of my favorite holiday traditions it to give a book on Christmas Eve. So hopefully in time for you to cozy up before bed, here is my Christmas Eve gift to you - a rec list!

tagged by the lovely @outtoshatter to take part. but it's monday! i hear you cry... yeah, sue me. this is a stiles's-perpetually-open-bedroom-window sterek wip fic that is growing incredibly s l o w l y but growing none the less.

"I'm gonna buy you a bell to wear around that thick neck of yours, 'wolf," Stiles threatens, and thinks he might actually mean it.

"You'd have to buy me a collar, first."

And—what?

Maybe Stiles isn't actually awake yet.

He thought he heard the sourwolf making a dog joke. Actually, forget the canine inclusion, that part doesn't even matter...

Derek Hale just made a joke.

Stiles must look incredulous as fuck because Derek's face softens a little. Hell, the big guy almost smiles, his smooth lips twitching adorably.

Stiles's frazzled brain needle scratches dramatically.

Then, it backtracks a little.

"Wait, how did you know I was having a nightmare?" he asks, momentarily puzzled. He wipes a clammy arm across his clammy face, waiting for his mind to whirr into action.

Derek must've—

Oh.

"Dude, were you hanging around outside my window?"

Derek looks shifty.

so long 2023

hellooooo! i'm writing this in the final minutes of jan 2, to tell you about the two (2) things i wrote and posted last year. thank you to @sorrybutblog and @oknowkiss for tagging me. i'm extremely low output in a good year, but whew. 2023 was a rollercoaster (fun and terrifying in turns, and truly there was no way to step off once i was strapped in) in my life and i feel like i've just stopped screaming. i'm hoping to have some rest and the mental space to do creative things again this year, including finishing a wip that's languished since 2022.

the first thing i wrote:

is a ficlet that doesn't have a title, but the tagline: NUT SO HARD A PATRONUS COMES OUT, which i feel needs no further explanation. i am desperately tempted to expand this into a full fic because. what happens when you're out in public and your boyfriend back home indulges in a deeply satisfying wank to the thought of you?

the second thing i wrote was:

draco malfoy starring in... bad idea, right? (T, 2.3k words) Leaving the party to see Potter’s new house couldn’t be a bad idea, right? I mean, Draco was invited…

i had a blast writing this and posting it in tiny drips on tumblr!! the banner is some of my best work imo!!

and you know what? as a bonus round, here's a shoutout to some of my favorite drarry/fandom related shitposts and fic-related thoughts that i wrote this year:

It's been a hot minute since I've posted something (because I'm going at my own pace and self care is a nice thing), so this going to be me mainly dipping into a mix of drabbles and fics from last year and early this year. Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern! >> xiii. I’ll Surrender (Sterek; T, 100, from Darkness was before the light drabble series)

It’s a beautiful sight.

My conclusions: Teen Wolf took over the second half of last year, and I guess deductions, observations or dialogue are what I like to start with for opening lines. It also makes sense that drabbles have short lines, because WCs are precious! Also, my preference is to usually start things ambiguously in the first line before tapping into character mention and PoV right after. Of course, case by case. Huh...interesting!

“What are you doing?” Potter asks as he barges back into the room, throwing his toothbrush back onto his shelf and flinging himself onto his bed. He smells like Hogwarts standard soap and minty toothpaste.

Draco snatches his hand away from himself, his shirt still hanging open. “Nothing.”

Potter looks at him, his cheeks pink. His gaze drops to Draco’s chest, then a little lower, before snapping back up again.

WIP Snip

I was tagged by @shealynn88 who posted the most beautiful extract which you can read here

Still writing my long fic - it's slow going but at least it's going. This is a wartime AU where Harry is still fighting Voldemort, Draco joined the Order in Sixth Year, and then ran away to France two years later. Now, after five years on the run, he's back and working with the Order again, and their HQ is being attacked by Voldemort. Unedited.

Harry was running before he even realised, before he noticed the thump of his feet and the heavy crunch of something, maybe broken glass that must have come from some window shattering, and then he was down the stairs and sprinting back across the courtyard towards the building again, eyes fixed on the light in that tiny window high above.

“Potter,” he heard above the thunder of his own pulse in his ears, then a hand grabbed him, hard, around the upper arm, swinging him to a stop and hauling him backwards sharply. It was Malfoy, of course. He was softened, a dark shadow against the backlight, Harry’s glasses steaming up from his run and his panting breath.

“Potter,” Malfoy said again, “what is it?”

“It’s Rosie,” Harry told him, and heard his own voice crack on the words with the cold clarity of breaking ice. “It’s Rosie and Arthur up there. When she can’t sleep, he sometimes brings her up to watch cartoons on the Muggle tv screen. There are magic dampeners up there, so the electrics don’t get fried, so he won’t even have heard the wards. The explosion must have been the first he knew of anything happening. Oh god, the corridor—it’s probably blocked off. How are they going to get down, Malfoy?” He was clutching Malfoy now, both hands around Malfoy’s biceps, fingers working helplessly through the soft old wool of Malfoy’s knitted jumper. “How are they going to get down?”

Behind Malfoy Harry could just about make out the huddled knots of cadets, arms shaking as they held their Shields, and above them the constant spluttering light of the guns. Silhouetted overhead, in the lookout post, he could see Ginny and Kingsley.

“First things first, you’re going to calm down,” Malfoy said coldly. “I take it the anti-Apparition charms are in place here too? Right, well, that would have been too simple. And the wing has no other access point?”

Harry shook his head, dumb with fright, wretched with nausea and tiredness.

“Well, we need to get up there somehow,” Malfoy said briskly, then more kindly, “Potter, you’ll need to let go of me for just a minute, okay? Do not move, I’ll be back.” And Harry realised he was still clinging onto Malfoy, hands tight around his upper arms as though he was the only thing holding Harry up.

Up above, the Shield began to bulge again under a fresh onslaught, and one of the cadets made a surprised noise and fell heavily to his knees, though he managed to keep his part of the charm going.

“We can’t keep holding for much longer,” another shouted to Harry, and Harry felt his vision darken and tilt as he sought that thin light again, thinking for a moment it was gone before he found it again, a weakening beacon. And then Malfoy was back, looking into his face with an odd searching expression before seeming satisfied with whatever he saw and nodding.

“Right,” he said. “Do you think you’re up to it?” In one hand he held up a broom, which he must have grabbed from the shed near the gatepost, which meant it was old and rubbish and probably hadn’t been flown in however long. But it was something, at least, and Harry should have thought of it.

“Yeah,” Harry told him. “Yeah, I’m up to it. Thanks.”

Malfoy nodded again and dropped the broom, then in one smooth motion summoned it up and straddled it. “I’ll keep her steady while you get them out. Otherwise you might lose your equilibrium up there.”

He turned to the cadets.

“Hold that Shield,” he shouted at them. “Not long now, you can do it. All our lives depend on it.” Harry would never have said something like that, would have worried it would be too much pressure for such young kids, but when Malfoy said it like that, confident and reassuring, it seemed to make them more resolved, wands arms steadying, chins lifting determinedly.

Harry slid on behind Malfoy, but his words of thanks were lost in the sudden rush of sky as Malfoy pulled sharply on the handle and the broom surged upwards like a skittish horse.

There is a fleeting moment of silence in the recesses of Draco’s mind where his heart soars. He feels the shackles of centuries worth of expectations waver and fall away. His father’s admonishing voice and his mother’s mutterings of displeasure fade into the haze. For the first time since the start of the war, he feels unburdened.

Or, Draco gets stupidly drunk, Harry's madly in love, and Zacharias Smith needs to keep his radish hands to himself.

Getting to Know You Tag Game

My darling @romaine2424 tagged me in this, thank you pal!! xox

Three Ships: So many ships, so little time! But for me - Drarry (my OG, own my heart etc etc), Stucky (well really, ICaPD Stucky), and Sterek (aka a ship I adore and read a TON in but have never, you know, seen the source material)

First Ship: Larry - they'll always hold a big space in my heart (I do still read a bit and write there but I'm not as active in the fandom obvs), they're the first place where I started to get what fandom could be, what it could mean to me, and the first place I started writing!!

Last Song: right now I'm all Noah Kahan all the time. He just captures something so poignant for me about growing up in small town VT

I would leave if only I could find a reason I'm mean because I grew up in New England I got dreams, but I can't make myself believe them Spend the rest of my life with what could have been And I will die in the house that I grew up in I'm homesick

He's really brilliant

Last Movie: Barbie. The whole family + my son's boyfriend went to see it together and wow, I know I'm like the stereotypical target audience for this but it really hit me, especially The Speech™

Currently Reading: way, way, way too much hockey rpf. Also because I'm starting a new job on Monday (OH MY GOD I AM STARTING MONDAY), I'm reading stuff about Medicaid and evidence based treatment for substance abuse.

Currently Watching: I'm not a huge tv person these days? I've watched RWRB a few times. I've got a ton of different shows in flight, but nothing is really sticking right now.

Last Thing I Wrote: Wrong in all the Right Ways (Drarry, Explicit, ~3900 words) - written for the 2023 HD Wireless Fest, for Pink's Raise Your Glass. Just a fun little smutty romp haha

Currently Writing: Buddie - I'm not sure how to describe this fic other than multiverse meets Groundhog Day meets fate intervenes meets iOS updates break the world? I guess?
