A younger Lymerel, who then went by a different name, with her twin brother. They were called Laflean, "child of the moon", and Shaolan, "child of the sun", as he was born before sunrise, and she after. Then the <tragic background> happened (I haven't defined the specifics yet...), he died, and she left the family. She took up the pseudonym Lymerel, meaning "bright eye", as she felt Shaolan was meant to be half of a whole that could not exist anymore.

Ah yeah! And in my country we write it "Shaolan" so it took me years to write it Syaoran when speaking in english!

Review of City of Streamer

I just finished watching City of Streamer last night. It's forty episodes of family feuds, forbidden love, and revenge! I thought it was pretty good, though it had some weak spots.

The female lead, Feng Shizhen, was my favorite part of the show. She starts out the show infiltrating the family of a wealthy and powerful enemy (Rong Dingkun) by taking a job as a tutor for his children. For spying-related reasons she plays a game of bait-and-switch with Rong Jiashang, Rong Dingkun's adult son, making advances towards him and then rebuffing him when he shows interest back. I loved how calculated and manipulative she could be--even when she inevitably catches feelings for Jiashang, she largely doesn't let it interfere with her mission, until it gets to the point where she feels her employer (she's a spy for ANOTHER of the Rong family's enemies) is going too far in their mutual quest for vengeance. She also has a soft side towards the women of the Rong family, who Rong Dingkun controls and abuses.

Speaking of the women of the Rong family, I loved them too. Especially Sun Shaoqing and Sun Shaolan, concubines that Rong Dingkun favors but also controls and abuses. In the end the fate one of them met made me actually cry. They're complex characters stuck in a bad situation :(

The male lead, Rong Jiashang, I liked more than I expected. I expected little bc he's played by Timmy Xu whose performance supremely bored me in Weaving a Tale of Love. But it turns out he's quite good when he's given a character with a little more of an edge--sometimes grumpy, sometimes menacing, always with the typical bad boy angst. His choices sometimes annoyed me but they were understandable. He's caught between his family and Feng Shizhen, a situation which really sucks.

The second male lead, Meng Xuan, is a LOT of fun. He barely forms a love triangle with Shizhen, never expressing romantic interest but sometimes hinting at it--but there's still a strong LOYALTY triangle bc Meng Xuan is Feng Shizhen's employer, a man with a strong animus of vengeance towards the Rong family. From scenes of quiet scheming, to comforting Shizhen over romantic angst, to going a little unhinged in his revenge efforts, he dominates every scene he's in. I also like that by the end he has this modus operandi of just collecting the Rong family's enemies and castoffs as well as people connected with Feng Shizhen, and protecting them, employing them and often letting them even live with him. Found vengeance family vibes. I wanted more of it.

Other minor characters of note: Feng Shizhen's older brother, Feng Shixun, a pure cinnamon roll too good for this world (except that actually he has a lot of resentment towards the Rong family too, and actually he has his own shit going on, except he and Shizhen NEVER FUCKING TELL EACH OTHER WHAT THEY'RE UP TO). Du Lanxin, Rong Jiashang's fiancee that he's not into, who is also not into him but wants to have an arranged and open marriage of convenience (every scene where she tries to talk Jiashang into this is hilarious).

Okay, so that's all stuff I liked about the show! There were however a couple things about it that I did not like.

First of all, the way this show treats disability is awful. It's got a "disability as punishment" motif running through it. An evil character ends up having a disabled son, who is also mentally unstable and portrayed as basically a creepy child most of the time. Rong Dingkun AND a minor character both end up becoming injured and disabled, and the attitude of the characters around them is "they deserved it bc they did bad things". I wouldn't say this theme is front and center most of the time, but it's definitely present.

More mundanely, there are just episodes of this show that are clearly filler while the show waits for the next major plot points. Of course, with a forty episode show you kind of expect this. I just wish they'd make their filler more entertaining.

Overall, though, I thought it was a pretty good show with a great female lead. And it hit my love of secret identities, scheming, and revenge plots :)

I am back with more Card Captor Sakura stuff. And I have decided to not watch the first movie (because it was boring XD) and only watch the second movie. So... here we are, watching “the sealed card” CCS Movie.

We can wonder later, how they will explain this in the Clear Card Arc Anime ;P

To be fair... by the time this movie was made, I think even CLAMP themselves weren’t aware that there would ever be a continuation of the Story of Card Captor Sakura. So no surprises there that when the movie was made, they took the freedom to get rid of Eriols house.

Did you ever wonder how the hell they managed to get Yue to work with them in that movie that Tomoyo made? ^^’ It seems rater out of character for him.

Ultimately, they have been separated for around two years if I remember correctly. And the most interesting part of this is, that the whole time Shaolan had been home, he had been training to get to a point were he would be able to help Sakura. I mean, if you think about it, the boy only got away from her, for her. What love and dedication he had...

Even knowing that the person you confess to feels the same way, it takes a lot of courage to tell them in person about your feelings, especially as she in her situation has an easy excuse to do it via phone or even letter. So I think its quite amazing that Sakura chose to tell Shaolan in person.

I love Yamazaki, but I am glad that at the end he was not the one playing the prince ^^’ He looks way too overdramatic here.

The awkward moment when you meet the person again that confessed to you/that you confessed too XD They look so shocked.

The most amusing part is, that them touching was a problem for them, while they have always been rather touchy-touchy, it never had that kind of context before, which now makes it awkward and embarrassing. Tho in Clear Card, as we’ve seen, they are comfortably touchy-touchy again - sadly, in the manga, someone ruined that, but the Anime sadly never reached that point - which is likely because of the fact that by then they have both confessed to each other and accepted the other persons feelings.

Tomoyo and Meiling were very eager to get those two together XD And in all honesty... those two conspiring together is almost scary ^^’

Once again, its so amusing to see them so embarrassed about touching, thinking of how often they do that in the Clear Card Arc.

But to be fair, they are not just more or less officially a couple by then, they also have matured quite a bit.

I know this is a running-gag but sometimes I wonder how the hell Toya manages to always get such ridiculous jobs that always somehow end up being near were Sakura is.

I’ve never been on a ferriswheel before so I never got why in Japanese media, it always gets portrayed as something romantic. I mean, yes, you share a small space and have a nice view that could be somewhat romantic... but... still... I don’t get it ^^’

To mood of this scene was so weird. Shaolan too was looking down and gloomy already, even before Sakura told him what the card would do, if she turns it into a Sakura Card.

I wish we could have finished that play. I know he dies in the end and all... but I am also sure we missed out on a lot of cuteness.

Its amazing how Naoko always manages to capture exactly the right feelings in her plays ^^’ Seriously, she wrote one for the Clear Card Manga and it fits the plot and the characters to a T.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I always respond to comments. I don't receive a lot of comments and i love the idea that someone took some time to read my stories and write a comment about it, it means so much to me, you have no idea. And i also love chatting and discussing stuff with people so i always answer with something. It can be a simple "Thank you so much" but it can also be a full psychology essay, depending on the initial comment XD.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I'm a sucker for angsty fics with happy endings so none of my fics have angsty endings per se, but all my fics have an angsty/hurt/comfort kind of vibe.

But if I had to pick one, I guess it would be "The White Room". The story takes place during season 5 (if you've watched the whole show so far, you can guess what it's about 👀). The fic is canon divergent and the story ends with a cliffhanger that foreshadows a lot of angst.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I haven't posted the whole fic yet because... i have yet to write it, but i would say "L'hôpital" has the happiest ending of all my fics. It's on hiatus at the moment because i'm trying to focus on finishing "Le Battement d'Ailes du Papillon" first, but it's planned and drafted till the end (the last chapters are actually already fully written) and i can't wait to work on it again! People seemed to really like the first 3 chapters so it gives me some motivation to get it done asap!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

No, not really. I did get several mean comments on a fic that didn't even have to do with the fic itself, and one anonymous comment from a burner account that was dedicated to leave hate comments on fics for fun which said something like "this is so lame you should stop right now" XD

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

No. I'm not into smut in fanfictions so i don't write smut.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

The first fanfiction i've ever written was actually a kind of crossover between Harry Potter and my OG characters, so it doesn't actually count as a crossover but still.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I am aware of, and I hope that'll never happen but i don't have a lot of readers so i guess i'm safe anyway XD

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I do translate my own fanfictions but that's it.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, writing is a solo activity for me.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

That's a hard question, I can't choose!

I love the whole Miraculous love square which has been my current obsession for years now, but i also have a soft spot for Sakura and Shaolan from Cardcaptor Sakura ❤️

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

My very first fanfiction (Harry Potter universe). I started it in 2002 I think. The 5th book wasn't out yet and I have the equivalent of 2 whole books planned in my head but not enough material to actually write full chapters and a whole story so i guess i'll never finish it, even though i still like it a lot.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think it would be writing emotions. That's what comes up the most in the comments in a very positive way and i'm really proud of it because that's actually what i love to focus on, and that's also what fuels and structures all my writing process. My rule is if an action isn't motivated by an emotion, then it doesn't make any sense and will seem fake or coming out of nowhere. Everything revolves around emotions.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Banter. I really suck at writing banter and jokes. Whenever I'm trying to write a light and playful chapter, it always ends up being way heavier and more emotional that i planned it to be.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Harry Potter.
