capitalism corrupts everything it touches, even weather forecasting

US private media companies like AccuWeather and The Weather Channel take publicly available forecasting information provided by the National Weather Service, a publicly funded government service, and repackages it into their own forecast and disseminates the info.

In 2005, AccuWeather lobbied to attempt to ban The National Weather Service from sharing predictions with anyone besides commercial entities. In 2012 they successfully blocked the NWS from producing a free app for the public.

This allows there to be an inaccessible filter on free, timely, and accurate weather information and forces it to be distributed through for profit apps. Even free apps are bogged with ads and delayed alerts.

The G Word with Adam Conover covers this extensively and I highly recommend watching that episode or reading the transcript here [x] but I will sum it up, starting with an episode quote:

"Imagine a future where extreme weather warnings live behind a pay wall." In 2015, AccuWeather received warnings from the NWS that a tornado was heading towards Moore, OK, a city that has been decimated by F5/EF5 tornadoes twice. They only notified users that were paying for the app.

So what can you do about it?

Get your local forecast directly from The National Weather Service's official site weather.gov !

Follow your local meteorologists on social media, especially if you're in an active weather area.

If you're in tornado prone areas, follow storm chasers on social media and check the Convective Outlook during your tornado season.

Get a NOAA weather radio or tune to your local NWR station! They are the most reliable source of weather information in the event of a power outage and the coverage area is extensive. They cover all hazards including severe weather, wildfires, dust storms/haboobs, heat/cold warnings, and any other warnings the NWS would put out. Here is information specifically for Deaf/HOH accessibility.

Oh you’ve got to be fucking kidding me. ITS NOT EVEN BEEN A MONTH SINCE THE NOV. 4 OUTBREAK AND WE MAY HAVE ANOTHER BIG SEVERE WEATHER EVENT AGAIN. This is a day 5 outlook. The confidence that something will happen has to be very high for them to do something for day 5. And while yes, things can change, it’s still a pretty big deal. This is not far from the area that got pummelled on Nov. 4 (it’s only a bit east of that area). I’m still processing everything from the Nov. 4, I’m not ready for another thing!

Y’all already know the Myrish love some lace. Wealthy women wear it all the time, but the style depends on the situation. Usually they wear very detailed pieces, and have a head piece to drape over bc of length, but in mourning they wear thick lace flat over their heads to cover their faces

Norvoshi women shave their heads, but wealthy ones wear wigs. Since the upper city is said to be grim, they definitely wear simple styles, very sleek and severely combed. They’re a sober, religious people and have a pretty serious outlook on life, but I think they still like to prove their affluence

Lorath is cold and bleak, so hair coverings are definitely common there. Both for weather and for common sense, as women are working and need to keep it out of their face and clean. Lots of neutral and natural colors, as I don’t think Lorath is getting all the bright dyes from Yi Ti and Pentos

Volantis is said to be super hot, wet, and just hella humid so I think the women slick back their hair so that it won’t frizz up from the weather. Because of this, keeping it neat is a sign of wealth. Hairpieces are light and beautiful, but not too big or heavy bc Volantis is just too crowded and busy for all that

Qohor is said to be the most “exotic” of the free cities, which I take to mean they probably have more influences from farther East. Their artisans are famed, so I definitely think there’s intricately crafted face chains and headwear made of precious metals. Probably lots of small figures and charms with religious influence, for the Black Goat

thank you babe!! I had the perfect idea in mind for this one bc I can see Bradley being all sweet and loving domestic life whenever he can take part.

Bradley hummed to himself as he whisked together a couple of eggs and a splash of milk in a ceramic bowl, adding pinches of salt and pepper as he went. He poured the contents into the hot frying pan, stirring them gently to scramble them. He wasn't much of a cook, he was the first person to admit it - he could barely boil water without burning the house down - but the one thing he was good at, was making breakfasts. He'd learned from his mom at a young age how to whip up scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes, which had become a morning ritual in the Bradshaw household every Sunday, when Bradley and Carole weren't racing back and forth between baseball games and football practices.

Bradley turned up the music on his phone, singing along casually to The Beach Boys as he turned his attention to the bacon that was cooking on the back burner, popping and sizzling with grease as it crisped up. Reaching for a pair of kitchen tongs, he picked the pieces up out of the skillet, laying each one delicately on a plate with paper towel to catch any excess grease that dripped off.

He wasn't planning on being home today - he had flight exercises scheduled and a run through of an upcoming flight path, but got rained out due to the weather. Maverick sent him and the others home for the day, due to a weather outlook showing severe thunderstorms the majority of the day. Bradley managed to make it the five minute drive home before you'd even stirred in the bed, and he took it upon himself to surprise you.

Of course, you heard the music playing from downstairs, but didn't want to spoil Bradley's plan for the morning. You laid in bed, keeping cozy under the duvet that Bradley had neatly tucked in around you when he left that morning. You heard his footsteps up the stairs, heavy and rhythmic as his feet made contact with the hardwood flooring. He made his way down the hall and into your room, where you were feigning surprise, a dramatized yawn escaping you as you stretched, the sound of Bradley singing God Only Knows filling the room as he set the breakfast tray down beside you in bed.

You smiled and wrapped your arms around him gently, giving him a tender, loving kiss as he brushed your hair back for you. A glass of orange juice, a plate of scrambled eggs, two slices of buttered toast and a few strips of bacon sat neatly on the tray, with a dish of strawberry jam and a dish with ketchup nestled beside them, just in case you wanted the added condiments on your breakfast. Bradley grabbed a slice of toast from a second plate that sat next to yours, borrowing the butter knife as he scraped some jam onto his bread.

"Good morning, beautiful. I thought I'd surprise you. Got rained out today, so it looks like you get me all to yourself for the day," He nodded as he took a bite out of his toast, his signature lopsided grin adorning his face.

"That sounds like the best kind of day to me."

F1 Driver's Championship winners who switched teams right after they won it

This post was inspired by a question asked by @vro0m the other day. Although they were asking about drivers who left WCC winning teams, i thought drivers champions who ditched their teams would be interesting as well.

Juan Manuel Fangio, 1956->57; Ferrari->Maserati. (was known to drive for a different team after each of his championship wins up yo this point, but its important to note those times had to do with his teams leaving the sport. The only time it was his decision was 1956->57)

Alberto Ascari, 1953->1954; Ferrari->Lancia (Not paid enough, perhaps on the grounds that he was risking his life)

Denny Hulme, 1967->68; Brabham->McLaren (can't find a source on this one but he was extremely close to Bruce McLaren and had driven for him in other race series. To give an idea of why i think their closeness could have been a factor, he was considered a man of fewer words and emotions than Kimi Raikonen, but openly weeped at Bruces death in 1970 during a testing accident)

Jackie Stewart, 1969->70; Matra->Tyrell (this could be semantic. Matra International was a "privateer" team from 1968->69 which was actually a collab between Tyrell the man and the french company Matra. The name of Stewart's team changes from 69-70 because Tyrell the man prefered maintaining a working relationship with Ford whereas Matra was moving on to Chrysler. Wikipedia articles partially seem to think the Tyrell team is basically a continuation of the Matra International team the year prior since Tyrell the man was technically the team owner of each. Matra however enters a works team in 1970 that also ran one race in 1969 so its confusing. )

Jochen Rindt, Honorable mention; he died in the Italian GP practice in 1970. He had such a big lead he still won the championship in spite of his passing.

Nikki Lauda, 1977->78; Ferrari->Brabham (Nikki's huge accident that almost killed him in the 1976 season changed his outlook on racing in exceptionally poor weather conditions. As a result, he refused to race in the 1976 Japanese GP, and lost the championship to James Hunt in the process. Ferarri was pissed about this and it deteriorated his relationship with Ferrari severely for the 1977 season. After being treated so poorly (even in the driver lineup from his point of view) he decided to leave despite winning the championship. Its important to note however that he's believed to have won by consistency despite the car's outright slower pace, so he might have also had technical concerns)

Nelson Piquet, 1987->88; Williams->Lotus (in 86 and 87 Piquet was racing alongside Nigel Mansel in a WCC winning Williams. According to Piquet he had an agreement with team owner Frank Williams that he would be the number one driver for 86, an agreement he felt was neglected after Frank got in a car accident and left the team in the management of Mansel's race engineer. Specifically, he was upset that Mansel was not ordered to let him pass for the race win on two occasions that year, and had he been let through he would have been champion rather than Alain Prost. The relationship never recovered from that, but for some reason Piquet waited to leave. It is worth noting that he signed for Lotus before winning the 87 championship. Additionally Mansel finished first in more races than him that year but lost because of Piquet's podium consistency)

Alain Prost, 1989->1990; McLaren->Ferrari (ho boy. Long story partially short, Prost believed Honda (engine supplier) favored Senna, and therefore so did McLaren for the 1988-89 seasons, to the point of even giving Senna a better engine in the 1989 season. Supposedly for the 1988 season a Honda employee confirmed the suspicion while speaking to Prost in person, but promised he'd do his best to change that for 89. Prost did not believe this had occured, as he felt his car was underperforming Senna's in 89. His biggest piece of evidence was that while running a better straight-line-speed setup than Senna in Mexico, he still was not being able to pass Senna by engine power on the straight. For Honda's part, they had a major press event where they tried to explain technically why Senna's driving style suited the engine better, but the employee giving the interview kept referring to prost by his surname but not Senna, which is a sign of a stronger personal relationship in Japanese culture and was taken as a sign of bias)

Nigel Mansell, 1992->93; Williams->N/A (retired)

Michael Schumacher, 1995->96; Benneton->Ferrari (Schumacher's official statement is that he abandoned his contract with Benneton a year early due to "the teams damaging actions in 1994" to use wikipedias wording. The teams actions include: software shenanigans where the car was found to have the supposedly unused ability to correct bad manual starts, which would give the driver the ability to have perfect starts regardless of their affectiveness with the clutch; ignoring a black flag for a safety car overtake; and having a skidblock that was so worn down it suggested Benneton was ignoring aero regulations)

Damon Hill, 1996->97; Williams->Arrows (this one doesny count because it was outside of Hill's control, but it's really funny. Williams sacked him in favor of Heinz-Harald Frentzen, whom i have never heard of and apparently would only ever win 3 F1 races in his career. Hill chose Arrows not because they were the best team with an offer, but because they wanted to pay him the most. His career sucked after that)

Fernando Alonso, 2006->2007; Renault->McLaren (wikipedia straight up just doesnt explain this. A reddit thread gives a lot of uncited opinions as to why, but a significantly large number of their users cite that McLaren was seen as a consistently top team in this era while Renault was seen as volitale. With Alonso signing for 2007 as early as late 2005, heres some possible factors: Renault's bizzare lack of commitment to staying in the sport; McLaren winning more races in late 2005 than Renault; Renault's success was partially attributed to weird tire rules).

Jenson Button 2009->10; Brawn->McLaren (Brawn was bought out to become mercedes, but was left to its Brawn leadership to still run the team. Jenson won the championship because of dominance at the beginning that was cut short by not developing the car enough. He still won overall, but Jenson asked for a larger focus on in-season developement for the next year as a condition for staying. Ultimately, he was spoked off when he discovered mercedes didnt have enough sponsors for their plan yet)

Nico Rosberg, 2016->17; Mercedes->N/A (retired)

what i think is going on wrt covid (basically a compilation of what people who actually know what they're talking about are saying) bc i think i need to write it all down for my own sanity

where we are generally

current worldwide dominant variant is either already or about to be jn.1 which is very immune-evasive (i.e. why it's suddenly winning)

symptoms can be pretty much anything, from asymptomatic, to something indistinguishable from mild allergies, to something indistinguishable from food poisoning, to (EXTREMELY rarely) death

no evidence that severity of disease is either better or worse than other omicron subtypes

at time of writing the UK is seeing an uptick in hospitalisations, which has generally a ~10 day lag on infection time, so we can surmise that covid is rampant atm

where we are w/ long covid

long covid rate per infection seems to have declined steadily since 2020. i like this piece on why the long covid problem has probably peaked already (well sourced, click around)

frustrating lack of cohesion with definition and diagnosis: the CDC defines it as problems going on for FOUR weeks; the WHO only calls it long covid after TWELVE weeks. (personally i think the CDC one is way too keen - it's really not uncommon to have a cough that lasts for 2-3 weeks post-virus and i dont think it necessarily indicates anything "wrong")

there urgently needs to be more clarity re: long covid subtypes: some people are suffering extremely badly with debilitating pain & fatigue, some people have a lingering cough, some people who were hospitalised have been severely deconditioned from lying in a bed for weeks - etc. all of these are conceivably diagnosable as long covid under the current guidelines, with extremely different needs. "long covid" currently comprises such an enormously broad range of symptomology that it seems almost impossible to tease out an individual risk from oft-yelled alarmist statistics like "1 in 10 infections result in long covid". like - ok - what kind of long covid are we talking? bc if you mean "1 in 10 people are still coughing at 4 weeks" i would believe it, but if you mean "1 in 10 people are severely debilitated for years" i would not.

reinfections probably dont incraese the long covid risk by very much, if at all. if you don't get it the first time you're very unlikely to get it the second time

not many (? i dont even think there are any really) treatments for long covid but the patient community is really really driving the research forward

anyway, the outlook for the UK for the next month i think is probably pretty bad on a population level thanks to the new variant jn.1 gaining global dominance, regular seasonal socialising, colder weather, + i wouldnt be surprised if the NHS cant cope (again). there's obviously only so much you can do but you really dont want to be in need of hospital treatment at the beginning of jan, when i suspect things will be worst, when there are no beds + the staff are all overworked hard to say anything about how bad the wave will be on an individual level bc we dont really know anything about jn.1's relative severity one way or the other but the sheer numbers of infected will presumably make it bad at scale if you're in the UK and have plans for christmas (or sooner) i would try and avoid mixing much until those plans happen to be honest, all the data is a week behind at least + even that data is showing large increases in covid activity so the actual picture will be worse by now

also, people whose analysis i generally trust and find helpful - a mixture of doctors / statisticians / biologists etc: paul mainwood oliver johnson prof. christina pagel eric topol jp weiland omicron data there are also a serious amount of covid alarmists on the internet and i find this frustrating at best + actively triggering at worst lol like just bc you're on "the right side" (i.e. you aren't in favour of mass deaths and/or disabling events) you cant just create misinformation + wilfully misinterpret studies lol. like it sucks still but where we are right now is completely different to 2020. if you see anyone comparing covid to "airborne aids" that is your cue to block

Saturn's return: Saturn in the chart represents our karmic destiny.  The karma of everything we could barely change.

This difficulty teaches us patience, perseverance, and setting boundaries. Saturn is also associated with all kinds of difficulties and troubles, both physical and mental suffering. Saturn is a planet of seriousness, discipline, duty and responsibility. Its main purpose is good; To help us grow, think rationally, control our impulses, act wisely and set boundaries. Saturn is also linked to the limitations we put on ourselves due to the past where we felt bound under a conservative belief of the environment we grew up in, as a result, the lesson of Saturn in our chart indicates an area where it will be very difficult for us to let go, but we will have to do so. Saturn completes its orbit around the Sun approximately once every 29 years. saturn return lasts approximately from the age of 28 to the age of 31, what is a saturn return or a planet return? When the planet orbits the entire zodiacal wheel in the chart for that matter, and returns to the exact point where it is located in our personal chart.

If, for example, Saturn is in my chart at 6° of aries, then when Saturn in its transits returns to Aries after its orbit to the same degree as mine, 6° degree, I will be in Saturn's return.

Because Saturn is a social planet and the time Saturn stays in each sign reaches to about 3 years on average (because there are also Saturn retrogrades that cause the planet to stay longer in the sign, and therefore the return of Saturn lasts three years on average, because it passes several times over its position in the personal chart).

Think of the return of Saturn and Saturn in general, as the following analogy: You wake up in the morning to a day full of plans ahead of you, enter the shower room, the weather is cold. You turn on the water, wait for the water to heat up, a few minutes have passed and there is no sign of the water getting any warmer. You're in a hurry, you have an important job interview in an hour and a half, and there's no way you'll leave the house without a shower. You do something - go in to take a shower in the icy waters in the freezing weather of March. You suffer, you try to hurry and time seems to last forever, and despite everything as time passes and you sense the end of this ice shower, you give one last push.

After you finished, got dressed, and took care of yourself You realize that you suddenly feel quite fresh, woken up. The return of Saturn is the shower of icy water, it is the "punch" to the face, and Saturn itself is the disillusionment and vigilance that follows the return.

BIOGRAPHY

daedalus and acantha met while they were both visiting brazil and quickly fell in love. the two cupids liked the area so they decided to settle down there and start a family, having several children with icarus being their youngest.

most of icarus' early life was running around the city, trying to help people fall in love though he wasn't ready to do this on his own so one of his parents or older siblings were always chasing the young cupid to try and stop him from creating chaos. his earliest works involved seeing two people who he thought were in love and tried to intervene though he didn't realize one of them was the richest man in sao paulo who had a wife at home.

being trained under his parents, icarus would eventually grow bored and desperately want to explore the world like so many of his older siblings had done decades before. his parents worried icarus wasn't ready but they eventually gave in and let him explore if he promised to write.

the next few decades, icarus would explore the world to try and help people fall in love and during this period he met his first true love. an older man who had a more scorned and negative outlook on the world. the two spent years together and icarus thought he'd met the one, though like most first loves… it didn't last forever and the two went their separate ways. icarus was broken hearted and reclused himself for a period of time, though he'd eventually bounce back. despite the smile on his face, he hasn't fully moved on from this love.

twenty years ago the cupid discovered alexandria, a beautiful town with so much life to it and instantly fell in love. he decided to stay for awhile, occasionally leaving for a few months but always coming back. it's been his most consistent home since sao paulo.

Showers returning to Central Brazil

The wetter weather may slow down progress and push safrinha planting later into the season, which increases the risk for the crop maturing during the typical dry season in Brazil.

Precipitation in the third week of January 2024, week-ending Jan. 20th, was below normal across Central Brazil while southern Brazil was wetter. This was the hottest and one of the driest third weeks of January in 30-plus years for both Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, according to data from WeatherTrends360. Meanwhile, this was the 3rd-wettest third week of January in 30-plus years for Rio Grande do Sul. 

Hot and dry conditions exacerbated the drought in Central Brazil. The continuation of a hot and dry theme in the main soybean-growing regions of Brazil has prompted several agencies to decrease soybean crop outlooks, causing upside pressure on prices. 

As we move into the fourth week of January, week-ending Jan. 27th, precipitation trends are expected to reverse with drier than normal weather in Rio Grande do Sul but wetter weather in Central Brazil. This is forecast by WeatherTrends360 to be the 6th-wettest fourth week of January in 30-plus years for Mato Grosso. While the rainfall is very much needed across Central Brazil, the timing is problematic as soybean harvest and second corn crop (safrinha) planting takes place.
