FIRST AND FOREMOST: this is not a panic post. It’s an informational preparedness post. Don’t panic. Just be prepared for this like you’d be prepared for an earthquake but you know it’s coming and it’s wet.

I’m 30, lived in Central Florida for the first 26 years of my life, and have experienced more hurricanes and tropical storms than you can imagine. Never in my life did I think I would have to discuss HURRICANE SAFETY again after moving to LOS ANGELES from FLORIDA and yet HERE WE ARE-

(This information is accurate as of 8/17 at 9am PST)

SO models are still early but it seems like as of last night, Pacific Hurricane Hilary is rapidly intensified AND has shifted its track pretty severely inland. Originally SoCal was predicted to get some bands off the coast but this does NOT seem to be the case anymore

As our good friend Jim Cantore mentioned above, if Hilary DOES make landfall in SoCal, it will be the first tropical storm to do so since 1939. Fucking yikes.

THE GOOD NEWS:

It isn’t looking like Hilary will make landfall anywhere as a strong hurricane. If it makes landfall in central Baja it looks like it’ll be a Cat 2 which isn’t great but still- better than the Cat 5 it’s currently strengthening to.

As for SoCal, we’re not predicted to get anything over a Tropical Storm. And mountains tear up tropical cyclones like crazy. It’ll (probably) be weak and, wind wise, no worse than the Santa Ana’s

THE BAD NEWS:

Our Cone of Uncertainty is currently pretty wide- this fluctuation matters as it determines which side of the storm hits us. Is this significant? Yes. The right side of a Hurricane is considered the “dirty” side- it’s the side that is most likely to produce severe weather, such as severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. It’s still too early to determine what side will affect us the most but it’s something to keep in mind.

Also, I can’t speak for the rest of SoCal, but I would not bet on the LA infrastructure doing well even with a weak tropical storm. Which is why I have brought you here today, to run down the IMPORTANT HURRICANE CHECKLIST

NOTE: I made this several years ago for FLORIDA so not all of it will be accurate to SoCal. Most of us live in apartments and have no say over tree trimmings and the likes. If the storm is feeling like it’s going to get bad, I would recommend moving important things and electronics away from windows and hanging out in areas of the apartment that have the least amount of windows. I don’t think boarding up windows or anything will be necessary but here’s information if you need/want it

ANOTHER NOTE: if you have the means, please check up on your unhoused neighbors and immediate community groups that do so, as well. As always, they will be the ones most affected by severe weather. Tarps, anything that rises up off the ground, waterproof bags, etc would be good to grab for them. I am not an expert here and would recommend following the lead of your community groups that work with your unhoused neighbors to find out what will be needed most.

I don’t at all think we’ll see any shutdowns so if the rain does get bad be prepared for dangerous driving conditions. I know it’s dangerous to drive any time it rains in LA but, you know. The Weather Channel isn’t predicting a TON of rain at the moment (for LA) but, just like our winter/spring this year, be on the look out for flash floods.

And again, this is all JUST IN CASE. It’s better to be prepared than not. SoCal’s infrastructure is not at all prepared to handle a tropical event so who knows! Anything is possible. If I was in Florida I wouldn’t at all be worrying about this but I’m not anymore and our wet winter absolutely fucked our roads in LA so I’d rather everyone be safe than sorry.

I’m sure it’ll all be fine and now you just have more safety information, which is never bad! Because frankly climate change is very real and I would not be surprised to see this happening more and more in the coming years. And it does have me worrying that El Niño this year is going to be worse than we imagined.

Hurricane Hilary

I am 1000% begging any SoCal or west coaster reading this to take this hurricane as seriously as you can and then take it more seriously. I know that Hurricane Sandy was an unusually strong storm and happened over 10 years ago and I can still remember how scary it was. Power outages for weeks, hopping between family members' houses, trying to stay warm as it started to get cold. It doesn't look like this storm will be as bad as that but it helps to be prepared.

The damage doesn't just happen on the day of the storm. Storm surges can take days to recede, roads can stay inaccessible long after the storm passes, floodwaters can contain deadly contaminants that can infiltrate the tap water and also hide live electrical lines. Many people die from carbon monoxide which fills their homes when they don't realize they need to put their generators or other tools and equipment outside.

There are lots of guides and resources to know how to keep safe and you still have time to prepare. Leave if you can but I know that option is not realistic for everyone. Research how to prepare and how to keep you or your family and friends safe during the storm and in the period of recovery. Keep in touch with people who may be in the path of the storm and make sure they're okay and accounted for.

Many of you who aren't familiar with hurricanes are now directly in the path of one. Please stay safe

We are still 36 hours out & he is already losing his voice.

This is definitely not the worst storm I've seen & for most Floridians, this isn't our first rodeo by any means, but wow, people are freaking out over this one. Yes, the rapid intensification is bad, but it has been really since Irma. It's not like we didn't know that the waters in the Gulf are like 90 Fahrenheit. This is an effect of climate change.

Prepare accordingly & follow the old adage: you hide from the wind, run from the water. If you are in a flood zone, evacuate now. The rest of you not in storm surge or flooding areas, just calm down & ride it out. If you are on the eastern side of the track (myself included), don't be shocked if there are some tornadoes or tornado warnings.

Be like me & just watch Twister during the hurricane! Also, make sure your extra battery packs are charged. Look for recipes now for Hurricanes just in case you lose wifi.

Also, for the non-Floridians, there will be people out doing stupid stuff. It's Florida. You shouldn't be surprised by this.

As someone (from the USA) who survived a severe hurricane, if there is one piece of advice I could give, PLEASE listen to any evacuation orders. This goes for voluntary and mandatory, but ESPECIALLY mandatory. If you can't get outside the evacuation zone, even just getting closer to the boundary is better than nothing.

If you are in a mandatory evacuation zone and you stay, no one (no emergency services) will be coming to save you. You will have to hunker down for however long the storm lasts.

The time to prepare for evacuation is as soon as you know you're under evacuation order, at LEAST. Do NOT delay. You don't want to be like my family who only left once the flood began (thanks, dad). Not only did we have to hurry to pack, we weren't able to prepare. At that, here are some good things to do in a hurricane:

Have a radio - an emergency crank radio is good, since it uses mechanical energy. We also had walkie talkies.

Have a good first aid kit, especially if you cant get out.

Unplug anything that you absolutely do not need while home, unplug everything before you leave. We didn't do this and my house almost caught fire (fridge outlet) - only the flood put it out.

Have a working fire alarm, charge flashlights and devices. Make sure you also have candles and lighters, too.

Be VERY careful if you must wade or drive in flood water. There will be debris, there will be down power lines. It is deeper than it looks.

Stock up on water and nonperishable food. Eat your perishable foods now. Use coolers for any excess. MREs are good to have, you can order them online.

Put belongings you can't take with you as high up in your house as you can - prioritize things that cannot be easily/emotionally replaced. Leave space for you to go high up too, if you're staying.

Use sand bags (or DIY alternatives) as flood barriers. Tie or tarp down everything you can, and don't keep it in a wide open area.

Close windows, and stay away from them. You really don't want to be there when something comes flying.

This is all I can think of for now, others feel free to add more or correct me. Remember, your life is more important than objects. Losing your life is worse than losing everything but your life. Stay safe, and stay alive.

Regina stared at her captain before her, still processing what she had been told. Sure, there was a touch of grey to his black feathers, and his golden yellows were a little dulled. But retirement? Captain Liam wasn’t that old yet, not much more than a decade older than her.

"Regina? Did you hear me?"

She looked up, furrowing her brow. "I heard you, sir, but I can’t say I understand you."

Liam leaned back in his chair with a sigh, shaking his head. "I’m retiring so that I can spend more time with Belle and our chicks. As my current second in command, you’ll become the new captain in my place."

"But sir—“ She touched her flippers to her beak as she searched for the words she wanted to say. However, they wouldn’t come.

"Do you not want the position?"

"Of course I do, but are you sure this is the right time, sir?"

He sighed, looking softly at her with his gentle blue eyes. "There will never be a right time, Gina. I just know you are ready to take the helm, and my chicks are growing up quickly as it is. If I wasn’t confident you could handle it, I would have put it off, but I know I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my team."

With a sigh, Regina finally nodded. "It’ll be an honor, sir. You better keep in touch though. We're gonna miss you."

"Likewise. I want letters of all the non classified escapades you all go on. Keep me in the loop." He chuckled as he stood up. "I haven’t told the others yet, but I will tonight when they’re back."

"Of course. Just know you aren’t going anywhere until after Lucy throws you a retirement party."

"Ha! I wouldn’t dare leave without my last Lucy party. You and I both know she’d hunt me down and drag me back for it if I tried."

"She wouldn’t be alone in the ambush either….Neo's going to take this pretty hard, you know."

Liam nodded with a long sigh. "He’s been the nephew I never had, it’s going to be hard leaving him…Which is exactly why I wanted you to be my replacement. No one else knows this rookery better than one of us."

"We'll be a man down."

"For a while, yes…But I’m sure you’ll find a new recruit in no time, or much like Neo, they may find you instead." He smiled.

Regina looked away again, smoothing down her spotted feathers. Things wouldn’t be the same without Liam around, but after his parental leave months ago for their most recent egg, she should have seen this coming. He had always been the more parental type. It was admirable.

Even if it seemed impractical to her. After all, living the life they live, wouldn’t raising chicks near the unit be safer than leaving it? She highly doubted that their enemies got retirement notices of their nemesis or would even care?

That said, Liam had always strong instincts, so who was she to doubt them now?
