Lexx pray tell what is Phantom Phight Club?
OHOHOHO
I'm so glad you came to me. Let me take you on a little story of our Phandom History.
Tumblr media
So the tl;dr is that it's a Danny Phantom shitposting tournament. There are 64 entrants who go head to head over 6 rounds. It's a stereotypical tournament style, so head to head rounds until there is just one final Phight Club Champion.
Tumblr media
The history of this epic tournament is that in 2018, @ectopusses and @raycr0ak (formally rayhoosier) challenged me to an epic phight behind the Denny's. We trash talked for a while before @dannyphandump (aka Tali) started a Betting Booth on me vs ectopusses, which was then coined as an official phight.
After the idea gained popularity, Tali made a post to see if people wanted to set up a genuine, Hunger Games style shitpost tournament. @catalystofthesoul then set up how the tournament would work, and Tali and Vic (@babypop-phantom) then worked to bring it all together for January 2019.
Tumblr media
2019 came with the FIRST Phight Club. @reallydumbdannyphantomaus won, @heyheyitsstillgay came in second, and I came in third.
Here are some amazing examples of the hilarity to come out of this event.
An incredible Danny outfit change by @heyheyitsstillgay
A Conlang Ghost Speak I made in one day
Danny reveals himself via snapchat by @punkhalfghosts
Danny cooks an egg by @reallydumbdannyphantomaus
2020 came next, and it was another slam dunk year. @ecto-american won, @auroraphantasma came in second, and @grimgrinningghoul came in third.
2020 also had some fantastic content:
A Clockwork Animation by @auroraphantasma
This Fenton Washer/Dryer Infomercial by @half-dead-half-wit
The time Danny convinced everyone he was being kinned by @grimgrinningghoul
When Vlad revealed himself by becoming Butch Hartman by @lumanae
Tumblr media
So then 2021 came, and unfortunately both Tali and Vic needed a break. The events were always massive and involved essentially two full months of festivities, including art making, ghostsonas, oneshots showcasing epic battles, fake jobs and fake workdays, and more. Then 2022 came and went with no phight club even mentioned.
At this point, many of us just assumed that Phight Club was a thing of the past. A fun little thing we participated in for a few years that had stayed in that era of the phandom along with the famous Apocalypses and other meme-y events.
Well that was, until Last Night where Vic mysteriously posted this ominous flickering Denny's sign, the first peep this blog has had in the past few years.
Then shortly after, they changed their header to say this.
Tumblr media
So is a Phight Club 2023 in the works?
Are we going to get an epic reunion?
Well, let's find out.

This was technically the 5th, but I don't think the excitement happened mostly today so I'm gonna throw it in! So Chaos Dad popped his head out yesterday just long enough to like Samba's BTS post on twitter and then also Samba and Rhys' little exchange.
Tumblr media
And of course that triggered clowning since anytime Chaos Dad pops in we don our clown shoes. Thank you to @merryfinches for catching some of the discourse!

Tumblr media
There's some speculation around the market research company YouGov potentially conducting research on OFMD. There's a big thread. Why is this important? Well this company works with streamers to measure viewership data, and if OFMD is in there...and someone's interested, that could be a good sign.

Some of you have heard, I got the COVID so I may be in and out over the next several days, I'm still trying to make sure I get to recaps though so don't worry! I'll let you know if I can't. Remember to mask up if you can and stay hydrated out there luvs!
== Love Notes ==
Alright lovelies. We've run out of Rhys videos for a few days so you're back to me being irritatingly loving at you! I saw this today on The Latest Kate's instagram and it reminded me of a few things I wanted to say. My brain is a bit covid-fogged so apologies if it's a bit wibbly wobbly.
We all struggle with so many little and big things in our lives. Whether it's mental health, self esteem, a physical ailment, love, lonliness, self-identity, family, friends, world conflicts, or anything, I could go on and on.
I know sometimes it feels like you are pushing so hard and you start making so much progress-- and then something, big or little stalls everything and you feel like you're having to start from scratch again.
I just want to send you a gentle reminder that progress isn't always linear. Just because you have lost momentum doesn't mean you've lost your progress. Every single situation is a learning opportunity and every time you run into a new hurdle, you learn from the last one.
You are wonderfully intelligent, kind, precious, complex people and no matter what you're dealing with, no matter how small or how big, you are moving forward and making headway bits at a time. Remember to be kind to yourself and don't beat yourself up for bad days.
We are so proud of you lovelies, remember that.

Something I wanted to do in the New Year is be more aware of how I'm spending my time at work, so I think I'm gonna try to do little summaries here of what each day entails. Hopefully also kind of interesting/useful if anyone's interested in academia?
For reference: we're on the quarter system, classes started on the 3rd, and I currently teach one class per quarter (heavy research-focused department, so very light teaching load). I also currently supervise 1 PhD student, 2 Master's students and 2 undergraduate research interns.
Monday!
Checked email on the bus to work, which mainly consisted of me seeing a colleague had received an endowed professorship, me writing her an effusive congratulatory message, and then me editing back the message a bit so it was less embarrassingly over the top. Also sent my students a reminder about their homework due on Wednesday and our little field trip tomorrow morning and accidentally sent it to last quarter's class, whoops. Luckily a former student quickly notified me of my mistake and I got it fixed!
Class was great - lots of flipped-classroom stuff that worked well even with only two students in the room (it's a conference week, everyone's traveling). I knew from previous years that the students had really, really struggled with this one equation, so I had them do a couple of examples in class and after working through the first one together, they both nailed it on the second try. Had to cancel a meeting with one of my undergrad research interns after class because the other members of our research team are out of town this week. Where is everyone? Well, at a conference and doing a two-month-long field campaign on the east coast. Forgivable. She offered to send me some of the work she's done thus far, so that's handy!
Went to check email after class and found that apparently a new remote meeting had popped on my schedule for immediately after class with an old peer mentoring group of mine (fellow 4th-year assistant profs in tangentially-related fields - we all did a professional development course last year together). Luckily it was cameras off so I could snack and decompress a bit while we caught up and made some strategic plans for the quarter.
Okay, FINALLY time to check email in earnest before my next meeting. 36 new messages since I checked last. New software package I need to bookmark and keep in mind for later work. Updates from the conference I'm technically attending virtually this week. Reference letter request from an undergrad student; add to calendar! Title and abstract to get added to the website for a seminar I'm hosting in a couple weeks. Reminder that the Zoom recording of my class is available to put online (which I promptly did). Triple-check with our tech guy that we're good to go up on the roof tomorrow to set up instrumentation for my class's term projects (all good!). Time flies, so here's the email with research progress from my undergraduate research intern and a handful of questions, we'll answer those and see how she likes jumping into a new dataset. New grant opportunities, job listings, a bunch of easy stuff to mark off. An essay about allocating time each week into the categories of Teaching, Research, and Service and strictly adhering to the percentages laid out by your tenure/promotion committee. Got a few minutes before my next meeting so I'll try it this week? Ish? Maybe? Looked sidelong at the new schedule, sure, we'll try that this week. Sent an email to my collaborator who's on a field project to see if we can do a remote meeting tomorrow to chat about a couple research proposals. Queued an email for next week's seminar speaker to see if he can send me the title and abstract for his talk/PhD entrance exam next week - no sense freaking him out before Wednesday, so we'll do a scheduled send.
Next up, meeting remotely with my former postdoc advisor! We've set up these meetings to "work on research projects" together but honestly this week it was just listening to him tell a very entertaining story about his car breaking down in rural Missouri and also listening to him describe a truly tragic tale of his very fancy sandwich getting thrown out of the office fridge by accident. That's scientific collaboration, baybee. We did talk research for a bit and he mentioned wanting to collaborate on a paper (he offered to pay for it out of the much more substantial research funds that come with his 30 extra years in the field) so I'm gonna come up with something for that by our next meeting in two weeks. I like working with him - we've published a couple papers in some pretty high-impact journals and he's always let me take the lead and go for first authorship without butting in, only providing support - so this is a fun prospect! I do have to submit an abstract this week for a European conference that'll be happening this spring, so maybe I can go ahead and lean into that idea a little.
It's now getting a little dark and rainy and I'm flagging a bit but I still have an hour before the afternoon seminar, so probably time to do a little course prep. Did some "grading" (just checking completion certificates for an introductory module the students had to go through). Fixed a mistake in Wednesday's lecture (why is there an anemometer when I'm talking about thermometers???). Reviewed some of the more complicated topics in Wednesday's lecture to make sure I'm not totally lost (some thermodynamics I haven't looked at in a while, thermocouples, semiconductors). Replacement slides uploaded to our course management system.
Aha! Email back from collaborator, she's going to be on a research flight tomorrow and won't be able to meet. All good, I don't have much to report anyway. That frees up an hour tomorrow, woohoo.
Okay, students have a homework assignment due a week from Wednesday, so I'm gonna post it this Wednesday. I have a good homework assignment prepared, I just needed to go in and write up a nice answer key. Got that done (along with some sample Python code to provide them with) and the homework assignment is scheduled to be posted, so it's time to look at next week's lectures. I've inherited this class from someone whose course notes can be a little scattered, so this is usually a bit of a process. Only two lectures to prep for next week, though!
Took a break from lecture prep to go to today's seminar, which purported to be about a really dodgy geoengineering scheme (redundant descriptor, am I right?) but in fact just rigorously tested said scheme and demonstrated it would actually have the opposite effect. Super fun and interesting seminar!
Okay, back to working on lectures for next week. Somehow got both of next week's lectures done before the end of the day, so those should just need a little polish and they'll be ready to go! Uploaded them to the course management system but sneakily and they won't appear to students until I've checked them over.
Tomorrow: going to the roof with my students to set up their term projects, then tons of sweet, sweet, meeting-free office time carved out. Hope this doesn't come back to bite me with a million meetings on Wednesday (...it will).
Important: work is done by 5PM. I try very hard to adhere to "leave work at work", which is not as much of a pipe dream as it seems, even for R1 tenure-track.

Posting Claims Open Tomorrow!
Just a reminder that posting claims will open tomorrow at 8:00AM CST (what time is that for me?). Posting claims allow teams to choose which date they want to have as their scheduled posting day between October and January. More details about posting expectations can be found here.
Teams will be able to track their assigned date on the shared posting calendar included in the posting claims email or linked on the discord - mods will send out confirmation emails after claims close on the 10th. Only one team member needs to submit a claim and mods will honor whatever claim is submitted first in the case of multiple team submissions.
Mods will do their best to keep up with claims, but as a reminder we'll be updating the calendar manually so there may be delays due to IRL interference (and needing to sleep). Please be patient! If you think there's an issue or a mistake, send an email or a message in discord's ask a mod channel to make sure we see it. Over this weekend, we do ask that any non-urgent non-claims related questions wait until after claims are closed just so they don't get lost in the shuffle.

The Hating Game Part 3 + Epilogue
Tumblr media
Pictures 1, 3, and 4 are from interest, and picture 2 is from @parkjammys
Pairings -Joaquín Torres x Aviator!Reader (Enemies To Lovers)
Premise – The infamous rivalry between you and Joaquin Torres is well known on the base. He hates you and you hate him. After unlikely circumstances, you realize hating someone is disturbingly similar to falling in love with them
Warnings: Major Spoilers for The Hating Game Novel. (btw read the book it is too good <3) Strong language, suggestive language.
A/N - Guess who went to campus for the first time after two years of university!?!?!!?? God, I am so excited about what is going to happen! I met all my online friends today at campus and everyone was so happy and excited! I am literally uploading this pic directly copy pasting the word doc without editing from my dorm room I AM SO SORRY FOR ANY GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES I will be editing them tomorrow and will surely update it. Thank you to everyone for sticking till the end I LOVE YOU ALL!!!!
Note - Credits to Sally Throne for the original story of The Hating Game that inspired this fic. Some scenes will be exclusively from the novel, others I will spin my way. I do not own anything, this is my interpretation of the novel with MCU characters.

Next Day
The morning light kisses your skin as you slowly open your eyes. An irritatingly loud sound rang in the background. You turn and switch off your alarm and stretch on the bed, thinking about last night.
He kissed you.
With tongue and everything.
You had a full-blown make-out session with Joaquin Torres.
On your bed.
It was not a dream.
And you liked it.
“ughhhh” you smash your head in the pillows thinking there was more to this. There has to be! A man like him does not switch from loathing you since day one to kissing you out of nowhere. You are going to confront him. You will go up to him and talk about what happened.
God, this is going to be so awkward!
---/---/---
You arrive at the base, looking through your e-mails and calendar to see if you have anything significant coming up.
You felt better, and you ate the leftover soup that still tasted as delicious as it was last night after heating it in the microwave. You remind yourself to bully Joaquin into making you the soup again.
“Morning Y/L/N.” one of your colleagues says as she passes you in the hallway.
"Good morning!" you call out, she waves and you smile.
You stop walking, standing still for just a second.
And when you turn, you see him coming from the other end of the hallway. He was in his regular green Camouflage Pattern uniform, and his buzzcut hair was intact. And this was the first time you realized how good he looked! From your perspective, everything was happening in slow motion.
“Hey…” you raise your hand but he glances at you as he nears, giving you a tight-lipped smile, looks ahead and continues on his way.
You continue to walk then, ignoring the memories of your past flashing in front of your eyes.
“Hi!” you smile at him. The guy in front of you in brown khakis, your new colleague turned to you, holding a mug of beer. He had a handsome face.
You extend your hand and say, “I’m Y/N. New to the base." He looks at you, and then at your hand, and then back at you with a normal expression.
“Uh, excuse me.” He says and walks away.
This continued during the field practice, and in your shared office. He just ignored you out of the blue. No sliding to your desk, no snarky comments, not even a stupid morse code message. He stayed quiet for the whole day, working on his paperwork and looking at his computer screen.
You met him as you walked towards the common room for your study sessions. He stops in front of you, about 5 feet away from you. You look at him, waiting for what he has to say and he says, “I think we should stop the study sessions for a while. I have some work to do with Sam and Bucky. I won’t be able to make it for some days.”
And despite your heart calling out to him, screaming at you to reason with him, you say, “Okay. It’s fine” you try to smile, and leave.
Having just listened to his brain, his gaze now wanders to your disappearing silhouette in the hallway, wondering if what he just did was the right thing to do?
---/---/---
Four days later
   “Good luck.”
His voice pierces through the deafening silence of the common room and you raise your head from the textbook and look at him. Joaquin was standing in front of you clutching a clipboard.
You were sitting in the common room looking through the notes you and Joaquin made in the last month. It was a mock test that would predict your marks for the finals. You and everyone enrolled in your course had the option to take the test from the base because it lasted 3 hours and was online.
You try your best not to fiddle with your hands as you look at him, but you were sure he had caught it by now. The ache in your chest grows as you realize his feet were inching towards the exit.
---/---/---
   “Thanks. You too.” You nod.
“Okay.” He says and immediately turns towards the exit.
Joaquin! You jump from your seat, unable to keep it in any longer. He stops in his tracks. “Will you please talk to me? How long are we going to pretend that-“
“You should focus on the test right now,” he cuts off your sentence, without turning back, “we will talk later.” He walks away without a glance towards you, or he would have seen the tears threatening to break out from your eyes, the ache in your chest just growing in size.
One Month Later
After being ignored and treated as if you don't exist by someone who wouldn't let go of a single chance to banter with you and increase your vocabulary of creative words you knew your mother would faint at, you would think you finally got peace. These are the kinds of days you would pray for.
But it was the exact opposite, and you had enough.
You storm out of your office. Anyone who sees you from a distance moves out of the way because they know someone is getting the worst of you.
The entire base would be foolish to not know who it was.
Joaquin had an obscene hanger for himself at the edge of the base. God knows how many times he had to kiss Captain Bexley's arse to get him to give him that space, he now uses as a personal space for "Avengers stuff" he had once told you, "That you should stay 400 meters away from"
The large doors were wide open. There was an old WW2 jet half-covered with a tarp sitting in the middle of the large space. And in a corner, Joaquin was at his workstation wearing headphones.
“What the fuck is wrong with you!!" You yell behind him, throwing a bundle of papers at him that you picked up from his table.
He turns away from his workstation which was a mess of monitors hanging on the wall running different algorithms. He looks at you with an unamused expression, as if he didn’t want you to be here. He takes off his headphones and steps towards you. "I was in the middle of an important discussion with Sam. How about a little respect?"
He takes the paper from you and reads it and smirks, "This might be the noblest thing the man has ever done."
You puff out in anger, stepping to him and shoving the paper in your hand on his face, "You're leaving the Air Force to be a full-time avenger?"
   "Yes," he deadpans.
"I found out by this stupid invitation planned by Captain Bexley on my desk, about your farewell party."
He takes a deep breath and turns to leave. “It’s not as easy as you think it is. Go away.” You didn’t back down, raising your voice instead, "Why did you help me, Torres?"
"You kissed me." You cut him off, and his face falls. He looks you right in the eyes and says, "No Y/N, you kissed me."
   "And you kissed me back"
"It was in the heat of the moment," he says.
"Fuck off Joaquin! Seriously! How long will you gaslight yourself into believing that???" you throw up your hands.
"I don't believe anything. I'm just stating facts."
   "Why did you help me?"
"Because you looked 2 seconds away from throwing up your insides from a stomach bug." He states, now taking a step toward you.
You could feel your heartbeat rising, your breath falling short. And he didn’t look any better. You could see Joaquin’s chest rising and falling as his breathing increased. Anyways, you continued, you were done brainstorming what he meant and needed to get to the bottom of this situation.
He rubs his face, “I can’t do this right now!”
"You agreed to study with me!"
"I wanted your help, okay? I agreed to do that because I didn’t want to be in your debt, the rookies were nightmares you knew that too"
"Why did you kiss me?” you ask again
   “You kissed me!”
“Yes! And you did the second time!”
“Why did you kiss me and ignore me like hell for a whole week? Why did you do it if you had to go out afterward with some random girl called Stacy, Suzie whatever her name is?" your voice breaks. “You... you called me short! I tried so hard to be your friend but you made me hate you! You straight up ignored me when I first met you!"
You didn’t even care at this point that you were screaming at him. “You act as if you hate me. Then you ask for my help after two years of insufferable behavior. You came to me!”
And he screamed back.
“Because I’m in love with you! Because I fell for you harder than the Gs’ on my plane Y/N! I forgot to breathe as soon as I saw you for the first time!"
"I had a plan, okay? Three rules I was supposed to follow no matter what. Join the air force, focus on my career, and not fall in love. Because I have seen what love can do to those who love unconditionally.” He huffs out, eyes brimming with tears, “I saw my ma lose herself when my dad passed away, she... she became someone I couldn't recognize anymore. She loved him so much, she still wears her wedding ring after 12 years."
It feels like you can't breathe, you can't think, and your heart just beats fast.
Joaquin gulps, looking you in the eyes, his expression softening. You try to breathe and instead, a sob escapes your lips.
"And then I saw you." He smiles, a stray tear falling from his eyes.
"You were everything I had sworn not to encounter. And if I ever did come across, I would run away. But your comebacks, your eyes, your laugh, you, you’re just..." he huffs out a laugh. "I tried so hard to hate you. You challenged me like no one ever did! You didn't think twice before flying your plane through a bombarded airstrip just to save 4 strangers you never met! Against Captain Bexley! You could have been stripped off of everything you’ve achieved in your life and gotten kicked out of the Air Force, but you still did it."
Your vision blurred as you blinked, trying to look at him through your tears.
“You were the dare people wish they never got into a game, which turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to them. And that scared me. I was terrified of what you would think of me if you find out. So, I never told you. It was my desire to let you know sooner, but I saw that you took an instant dislike to me after we first met, and I tried telling you to ask you out after, but I understood you wouldn't want that kind of relationship with me. I learned how to love you silently, for I know you will never love me back after how I have been with you. So, I never did.”
He takes a deep breath after saying that. And you could feel by the words that you just heard that he has been wanting to say that for a long time. You sniffled as he took a step towards you, gently wiping away your tears with his thumb.
For someone screaming out everything in her heart at him, you had no words coming out of your mouth at this moment. You wanted to let him know he was a good person, and somewhere behind this tough persona, he had a soft side that you were kind of falling for. And that you don't hate him, not anymore.
But you couldn’t say that.
"I'm sorry. I really am." He says and walks away, leaving you alone in the hanger.
---/---/—
Epilogue: The farewell party
Evening on the beaches surrounding the small naval town was a sight. The ocean turned a lovely shade of red and orange, reflecting the sky above, the horizon looking like it would never end. The sound of waves hitting the sand, soft and calm like a lullaby. A yacht or two in the distance, and children playing nearby, unaware of the scary reality waiting for them as they grow older. For them, the present was everything.
Such was the sight that you were witnessing as you stood on the wooden deck of the bar. Holding a bottle of beer, resting it on the railing, and marveling at the beauty of the natural world.
You had the perfect excuse not to attend, hell you earned some wide eyes and double takes as you entered the bar. You could not withstand Captain Bexley's fake smiles the whole evening at the farewell party for Joaquin. Everyone knew that, but they wanted to have a good time with their colleague before he set out to save the world. You bailed out, almost.
But then you saw him.
He was wearing the same outfit he did on your night out, and he looked happy, smiling and taking pictures with everyone. He even invited the junior airmen from the team you both trained together, those who were still stationed nearby. You glanced behind you and looked through the glass doors to see him standing with Captain Bexley. He slapped his hand on Joaquin’s shoulder with pride. Maybe for a second, this bastard managed to melt the old man’s heart.
You turn back to the sunset sky, now showing some soft signs of blue in between the reds.
“Thought I’d find you here.” His voice traveled through the sound of the ocean. He stands next to you, resting his hands on the smooth wooden railing. Instead of looking at him, you ask him, "What's up with you and your obsession with green? There are so many other colors to choose from.”
You laugh for a second, remembering a similar conversation you had with your father while watching old re-runs of Power Rangers.
He laughed in response, “It reminds me of Tommy Oliver.” (Tommy Oliver is a fictional character and the protagonist of the television franchise Power Rangers. He is best known for being the original Green Ranger and the first evil Ranger who fought and nearly defeated the original Power Rangers. Played by Jason David Frank)
“Is he your man crush or something?”
“Oh, yes. He is everybody’s man crush.”
You take a deep breath, realizing what you were about to tell him was something you never told anyone else, a past you ran from as soon as you turned 20, “Well, I was kind of a nerd growing up and ended up not having a prom date in senior year. Who would hang out with the class topper with grandma glasses, right? So, he dressed up in his wedding tux and escorted me to the party.” You take a deep breath recalling the memory. “I got made fun of for a while but, that was the sweetest thing someone ever did for me. He had a blast and by the end of the night he was the star of the show dancing to Whitney Houston.” You laughed.
“Pops, I mean, my dad said the same thing once.”
   “Pops?” he laughed.
“Yes, Torres I still call my dad pops because he is adorable.”
   “Really? How?”
“My dad was a marine. He once returned after a year from Afghanistan. I was ten, maybe eleven. He had missed my basketball games and my birthday, and I was pissed. I didn’t talk to him for the whole day when he came back. So, the next day he took me to the arcade and we spent the whole day together. He won so much stuff and we only came home when he ran out of coins. That's one of my favorite memories.” He clears his throat and looks at his hands. “He passed away in the line of duty a month later.”
“That’s pretty sweet." He laughed with you.
"Hmm" you look down at your drink, thinking about how he won’t be here after today, who would you talk with, banter even? And then he starts talking.
You turn to him, standing straight as he hunched over the railing. You could see how difficult it was for him to say this.
“I’m sorry I shouldn’t have-” you begin to apologize but he cuts you off, “No, no it's fine. I miss him a lot but, yeah, it’s fine.”
You feel something shift between you. He turns his whole body towards you. He rubs the back of his neck, but straightens up, looks you in the eyes, and begins, “I have been playing a one-sided game with you for a long time. The Hating Game. I would wake up every day and reach the base, trying to find one reason to hate you.”
Your eyebrows shot up immediately, and you were ready to banter with him, but he kept talking, "I would think that today is the day I will stop thinking about you, but for some absurd reason, I did that for two years even though I lost every day. I could not bring myself to hate you. One look from you would make my day. I would snark a comment and you would reply back with a better statement. It drove me crazy.”
He takes a small step towards you, “After we kissed, I thought that maybe, finally, I could ask you out. Take you to dinner, open the doors to you, kiss your hand”, he smiles, “and call you shortcake because I could watch you all day pretending you don’t like it. And also because it would be a dead giveaway that I was hopelessly in love with you.”
You take a deep breath and take a step towards him, your hands itching to caress his face.
“Will you play a different game with me? The Starting Over game. Start over from whatever has happened so far and get to know each other better. And if you like me, well, let's just say I have made some plans about that.”
You laughed with joy flowing through your veins. You really thought you were going to lose him and he comes up with this crazy idea, which can actually work.
“Hi, Joaquin. I’m Y/N Y/L/N. Nice to meet you too.” and instead of listening to the voice in your head teasing you about leaving him stranded like he did last time, you shake his hand.
“You are heading to New York, how-”
"How will we do this? I don’t know. But I want to give this a chance. I would like to take this risk. I don’t know what the future holds but I want this. With you.”
   “Okay.” you smile.
“Okay? Okay.” He clears his throat and straightens his jacket.
“Hi. I’m Joaquin Torres. Nice to meet you.” He extends his hand toward you with a warm smile.

Day Seventy-One
I woke up with a headache because I didn’t hydrate enough yesterday, so I wasn’t super thrilled about having to work. But I told myself today was going to be a short day, so I could drink some water, take a couple Tylenol, and get through it; I could even leave at lunch if I still didn’t feel well since the last block of the day is my prep time.
Well. That’s not what happened.
My headache got better after I had breakfast, showered, and took the aforementioned Tylenol. I got to work right on time, got ready, and taught a decent lesson APGOV. My students took a vocab quiz, then did some reading on the end of the civil rights movement. I fielded questions on that, then lectured on policy changes that had been enacted post-1968. We discussed ongoing civil rights issues for a bit, and that was that.
In World, we finished a set of board notes about Iran/US relations, and I explained how their government uses the tensions between our countries to paint opposition as “foreign interference,” call protests the result of American meddling, etc, etc... After that, I had them read an article about the human rights situation in Iran (lots of comments about the treatment of the LGBTQ community, lots of comments about marriage/divorce, lots of questions about the use of torture by security forces). Then I showed this BBC news report about the ongoing protests. That was a good call because most of my students couldn’t take their eyes off the screen, and they had so much to say afterwards. They think it’s cool that they’re learning about something that’s happening right now, something they’re developing opinions about, something they can talk to their parents about (I’ve already gotten one email from a parent, telling me their child was discussing “something that’s on the news” and asking- in a good way- how I’d made that happen... those emails are THE BEST).
My headache started to come back towards the end of Block 3, but it wasn’t bad, and one of my GOV students had asked if she could come by during Block 4 to go over her last test, so I didn’t end up signing out early. I grabbed lunch from our culinary class’ cafe (chicken quesadillas today... yum!), and got to prepping for tomorrow while I waited for said student to arrive. She had just a few questions she wanted clarified, so that was easy. She asked to schedule a retake, so I turned to my calendar... and was reminded that I had a faculty meeting after school.
So, yeah, so much for a short day. But it was fine. The meeting was all informational updates, data share-outs, nothing too dramatic. And now I’m home!

august 28, 2022; 7:10 pm - long weekend
long post ahead! i feel like i havent really had the time again to just sit down and update my tumblr (and even myself tbh) with everything thats going on with my life so fair warning this post is going to be super long but feel free to read along
work:
i hate how work is all i ever think about nowadays kasi wala naman akong jowa, all my friends are busy too, tapos na yung board exam pumasa na ko and everything so talagang when i have problems at work, its all my brain can think about and its really exhausting
ill try to go in depth again about work in another post next time pero all i can say is its both really fun to be challenged but also its just really tiring too kasi it isnt the most ideal way of being challenged (if that makes any sense)
im just really thankful for my work friends kasi they constantly remind me na oo nga pala im not alone and they understand me more than anyone could kasi theyre living through these challenges too
family:
my tita and tito are leaving this week and its really bittersweet! i love having them here kasi nga its a great break from the mundane but its also very tiring to constantly have to be a host every single day so all in all im just really glad they got to visit and that they had fun here during their stay!
sana most of my cousins could come to our house tomorrow for my little celebration kasi i really do miss them plus ang daming pagkain na balak lutuin/bilhin ng nanay ko and i dont want that to go to waste
i miss my kuya so much and i wish march would come sooner para nandito na siya for a few months of vacation
i love my family and our dogs so much and im forever thankful for all the blessings we receive everyday and that we're always safe
personal:
where the fuck did this rain come from? it was partially sunny from yesterday to this morning and now its pouring again - i love the rain, not so much the lightning, but i really hope it doesnt rain tomorrow
im so excited for tomorrow kasi my brain is already making a mental to do list of the things i want to accomplish tomorrow before guests start arriving
im so emotional and extra bloated kasi magkakaroon na ulit ako ng period and most of the time naaamaze parin ako sa flor app kasi sobrang accurate niya when it comes to telling you how long before you get your period again (that is, if you make sure to always update the calendar once you do get your period)
i dont exactly know what to wear yet tomorrow - and yes inisiip ko parin yun kahit na sa bahay lang naman kami magcecelebrate
i got the tiny spray bottle that came with my keyboard cleaner to work! akala ko sira talaga siya ever since i got it pero i think i just havent been pushing it correctly all this time lang
i kinda want a cute mousepad too kasi ang panget ng mousepad na gamit ko whenever i use my laptop
music:
talk that talk is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than pink venom when it comes to comeback singles
im so so so happy about twice sounding more like they did around mid 2019-2020 kasi thats my favorite era from them and im just really happy na talk that talk fits that sound ive always been looking for from them
super love the y2k mv, the choreo is AMAZING, the song is really cute, and i really love how maganda yung distribution of lines nila in the song
theres this particular song i recently fell in love with and instead of gatekeeping it (even though im sure some of you might already know it) im going to share it with all of you kasi its one of the loveliest songs ive discovered in a really long time - golden hour by jvke; reminds me so much of call me by your name and feeling like youre in italy and falling in love and being outside, basking in the sunlight with your lover - i really hope someone, someday, remembers me when they hear this song
and thats it for another update post! again if youve made it this far, thank you again for reading my updates; i hope you all are doing okay and are staying safe and dry!
happy long weekend, tumblr! sulitin na natin to!

Maximizing Productivity with Slack Reminders
Introduction:
In the fast-paced world of modern work, staying organized and efficient is crucial for productivity. With the advent of collaborative tools like Slack, teams have found innovative ways to streamline communication and project management. One feature that often goes underutilized but holds immense potential is slack reminders. In this article, we will explore the power of Slack Reminders and how they can be harnessed to enhance productivity and keep teams on track.
Understanding Slack Reminders:
Slack Reminders is a built-in feature designed to help users stay on top of their tasks and deadlines within the Slack platform. It allows individuals to set personal reminders for themselves or even create reminders for specific channels to ensure that important messages or tasks are not overlooked.
Setting Personal Reminders:
One of the primary uses of how to set slack reminders is for personal task management. Users can easily set reminders for themselves by using the "/remind" command followed by specific instructions. For example, typing "/remind me to review project proposal at 3 pm tomorrow" will prompt Slack to send a reminder notification at the designated time.
Team Collaboration with Channel Reminders:
Beyond individual use, Slack Reminders can be a powerful tool for team collaboration. By setting reminders in specific channels, teams can ensure that crucial updates or discussions are not forgotten. This feature is particularly useful for asynchronous communication, as team members spread across different time zones can receive reminders when they are most active.
Integration with other Apps:
To further enhance its functionality, slack show reminders can be integrated with other third-party applications. This integration allows users to link their task management tools, calendar apps, or project management platforms to Slack, creating a seamless workflow. This ensures that all reminders are synchronized across various platforms, reducing the risk of missing important deadlines.
Best Practices for Using Slack Reminders:
Be Specific: When setting reminders, be as specific as possible. Clearly define the task or message you want to be reminded about and set a precise time.
Utilize Recurring Reminders: For tasks that recur regularly, such as weekly meetings or monthly reports, use the recurring reminder feature to automate the process and save time.
Combine with Threads: To provide context to reminders set in channels, use threads to keep related discussions organized. This makes it easier for team members to reference important information.
Integrate with Other Tools: Explore integrations with task management tools or calendars that your team already uses. This ensures a unified system and prevents information silos.
Conclusion:
In the era of remote and flexible work, tools like Slack have become indispensable for effective communication and collaboration. Slack Reminders, often overlooked, can significantly contribute to individual and team productivity. By incorporating this feature into daily workflows and following best practices, teams can ensure that important tasks are never forgotten, leading to a more organized and efficient work environment. So, take advantage of slack see reminders and experience a boost in productivity within your team.

Good evening! Today has been busy. I spent the morning with my MIL walking in the park after the rain and bad weather passed. I had fed my baby in a car before, and as a breastfeeding mom, I didn't enjoy it. I try to avoid feeding her in the car as much as I can for my own comfort. I did have to feed her and change her while walking. That was my first time changing a diaper in the car. After that, the baby and I went to the chiropractor. I'm being adjusted to get my body back to where I was before pregnancy and the baby for constipation. The day started out strong! On the way back from the chiropractor is when it got a bit interesting for me.
I had to pull over to feed my daughter again after leaving the chiropractor, she wasn't going to make it back home to eat. So I pull over and feed her for the second time in the car today. I start to change her after feeding her and she got cold or super upset--not sure--and she peed all over the dirty diaper, the clean one, and the portable changing pad. So I go to do damage control and pray that she doesn't pee on the only clean diaper I have left in the diaper bag. She doesn't, so I get her changed and back in her car seat. I then clean up the dirty diapers and the portable changing pad and head home. This excursion has added an hour to our drive, my chiropractor is 30 minutes from my house.
I stop by the bank also on the way home to get money out for ice cream day at my foster child's day camp. On Fridays they have different fun foods for the kids, they cycle through shaved ice, ice cream, and pizza Fridays. I get home, get the baby and all the stuff in the house and eat a very late lunch. By that time she is ready for another feeding so I feed and change her. I go to put her in her bouncer but spending most of the day in a car seat or stroller made her want to be held. So I hold her for an hour, get her soothed to sleep, and take my second shower of the day (walking left me super gross). After the shower she is awake and still misses being close, so I put her in the baby carrier and go about putting everything where it needs to be. I'm starting to feel discouraged about not having pumped at all today because it is nearing 4:30. I decide to start getting her bottle ready for when my husband gets home at 5:30 so I can pump. I don't get a chance to until 6:30 because even though he feeds her, we all need dinner. So at 6:30 I pump for fifteen minutes and get discouraged by my small two ounces for the day.
I put the breast milk up and pivot to cleaning up dinner and packing my foster child's lunch--while wearing my baby again. My husband had band practice so he couldn't keep being the main parent. He did take our foster child with him though, so I only had the baby. After cleaning and lunch packing, I feed the baby again and update the calendar with our chiropractor appointments and make a grocery list. And now it's 9:00, my foster child is showering and getting ready for bed, and I'm wrapping up this blog and going to bathe the baby as my husband reads to our foster child before bed. I want to attempt one more pumping session tonight.
Today has been overwhelming and I feel like I should have done better. But I'm still learning and need to give myself grace. Here's your reminder to give yourself some grace too--whether you're a first-time parent or an experienced one. We're always learning.
Until tomorrow, sweet dreams!

OKAY GOOGLE DOWNLOAD MUSIC ANDROID
You won’t find “The End of the World” by Godkiller anywhere else. (Again, assuming your flight information is in your Gmail account.Got it? YouTube Music is like Google Play Music, but it’s using YouTube’s massive music catalog instead of a completely different service. So, technically, it has more stuff to choose from-especially if you’re looking for rarities or other uncommon jams. Is my flight on time? (Assuming your flight information is in your Gmail account.).Ex.: "How much is 100 Euros worth in dollars?" When viewing details for a restaurant, you can say "Show me the menu" to bring up a menu.Ex.: "Translate 'where is the bathroom?' to German." (You can do this on a computer using Chrome to find and play a sound on your lost phone.) When will my package arrive? (This assumes a tracking number is found in your Gmail account.).+17 more See all photos Random tips and tricks For instance, "Where is she from?" (Android 6.0 Marshmallow) If a song is playing, ask questions about the artist.Ex.: "Show me a video of someone opening a can without a can opener." Naming a sports team or athlete will bring up general information about the team or person.Ex.: "Who are the Broncos playing next?" or "Did the Nuggets win last night?" Ex.: "How do I make an Old Fashioned cocktail?" or "How do I fix a hole in my wall?".What's the weather like? Alternative phrases such as "Do I need an umbrella?" or "Is it going to be hot tomorrow?" will return weather forecasts.Ex.: "When is the next eclipse?" or "When is Easter in 2018?" Ex.: "Show me my pictures from San Francisco." "Remind me to take out the trash tomorrow morning," will give you a time-based reminder. Ex.: "Remind me to get dog food at Target," will create a location-based reminder. Ex.: "Set alarm for 10 a.m." Or "Set alarm for 20 minutes from now." Ex.: "Create appointment Go on a walk tomorrow at 10 a.m." Create a calendar event or Schedule an appointment. This will present a list of recent messages, and read them to you, giving you a chance to reply. Ex.: "Email Wife subject Hi message I'm running late, sorry." You can also add CC and BCC recipients. If you know of a command missing from our list, please leave a comment and we will be sure to included it. Odds are it's not entirely complete, since Google did not share one with us - we asked. Below is a list of commands we have verified work on Android. We searched high and low for a complete list of "OK Google" commands, but came up short. The (almost) complete list of Google commands Head to the Google Now app, go to Menu > Settings > Voice > "OK Google" detection. If "OK, Google" isn't working for you, make sure that feature is enabled. If the search bar isn't on a home screen, swipe right from the primary home screen to see Google Now. Tap on the microphone button in the Google search bar, and skip the "OK, Google" portion of the conversation. For example, if I wanted to know the weather, I could say "OK Google, what's the weather like today?" and a few seconds later Google Now would provide the forecast.
OKAY GOOGLE DOWNLOAD MUSIC ANDROID
With newer Android devices, just say "OK Google," followed by a question or task.
If you can't get enough of talking to your phone (or your Android Wear watch), we put together a long list of OK, Google commands to help you get more done with just your voice.Įditors' Note: This post was originally published in March, 2016 and has since been updated to include newly discovered commands. (Though, of all the voice assistants, Google Now was already the most natural-sounding one.)
OKAY GOOGLE DOWNLOAD MUSIC UPDATE
With Google Now, you can use voice commands to create reminders, get help with trivia questions, and, yes, even find out "what does the fox say?"Īnd, with the recent update from Google, the voice assistant's reponse will sound more natural than ever.

My relaxing day😊
How is everyone’s day going?! I hope everyone is doing well because I had a really good break today. Even though now I’m freaking out because I have a lot to do. Four homework assignments due tomorrow Sunday!!! I should be fine though because I’m planning on getting one or two done today. Some are easy and okay.
After what happened earlier this week I just needed a set back. How many of y’all have been through this situation? How did y’all deal with it? I finally told myself good job for at least trying 🫶🏼
I decided to buy myself some ice cream to feel better which definitely was a bonus. I also reminded myself that maybe my scores won’t be so bad after all. I will update you guys when I get them back! Let’s hope for the best only! 🫶🏼✨
Here in this post I decided to present my monthly calendar and as you can see it is FULL!! I wrote down assignments for the weeks but I am most likely doing them on different days. My bullet journal is also shown which I am proud of because it looks so nice to me having a lot crossed off. Today I will be hopefully crossing off three assignments 🥰✨!
Also we finally got a coffee maker againnn!!! Which I am now excited so I can make my own coffee now🥰☕️!

A/N: Everything is just based on my observations/perception of him. Updated with texts AND Snapchats 10/22/21
Tumblr media
Planning out the most logical way to do something before you do it,,, like literally mapping out all the options
Hitting you up to run simple errands like going to the bank or mailing stuff,,, he just likes your company
So many little inside jokes that are soooo old but still so good
Like he can say one word to remind you of the inside joke and y’all will both be dying in the middle of a Walmart
He’ll teach you how to play games and SCREAM “LETS GOOOOO” when he gets excited
Will talk you out of bad decisions
Both secretly doing something and trying not to get caught by anyone else
Adventurous dates like paintball or bungee jumping
Blasting music in the car and singing your lungs out Idk why but I feel like he liked early 2000s punk bands like Blink182, MCR, Green Day, etc so expect that to come into rotation
You two will start speaking the same. Same slang, the way your pronounce words starts to get similar
if you lay on his lap he’ll rub your head
Sometimes you’ll just watch his facial expression when he’s talking to someone else and they are just so KILLER bc you can tell he does not like that shit
Watching a weekly series together and then discussing your opinions at the end of each episode
He’s the type to write down your events in his calendar so that he remembers
Feeling bad when you accidentally wake him up but he’s just the cutest when he’s disoriented
Super sensitive so you have to be careful with what you say around him sometimes
He loves rainy days where he can stay in and chill
Will always try to convince you to do risky stuff like jump out of a plane or zip line he LIVES FOR THAT SHIT
Big fan of late night drives
Tumblr media
He’ll win u a prize at the carnival. It’s like almost impossible but he can do it trust me
Hogs most of the bed when he sleeps
His colourful hoodies will end up in your closet somehow
Says “text me when you get there so I know you got home safely”
Lover of escape rooms and all things where your brain has to actually work
Very determined so he won’t give up on you after one little fight
But there are a lot of disagreements tbh. He’s just adamant in his beliefs but that doesn’t mean he isn’t open minded
I feel like he’s mad touchy and he’s slick with it too like ooops guess you’re in his arms now
 Values your opinions a lot
Has cried while watching a sad commercial with you LMAO
Not the best texter and prefers FaceTiming or talking in person  BUT he will definitely text back about the important stuff on time
Has random cravings at night like sir why are you eating a pickle??
Needs time to himself to recharge
Conversations before bed where both of y’all just stare at the ceiling and say what ever you want,,, like some days it’s “what would you do if you got abducted by an alien?” And other days it’s just ranting about whatever’s bothering you
Long-term ongoing bets that he usually wins
can comfortably sit in silence doing two different things but will always end up in each other’s arms at the end of the day
Says “we’ll worry about this tomorrow” when he’s too tired
Has the weirdest childhood stories and sometimes he repeats them but they’re always so funny to hear
Values honesty a lot so would be annoyed if you were untruthful
Loves sending update pics when he’s on tour
Always checks up on your mental well being and tells you not to stress yourself out too much
Be prepared for impromptu messy fast food take out dates where y’all eat in the car and just talk about life
Will talk in a high pitched squeaky voice with you to annoy everyone else
 sharing dessert
says “YOU KILLEDDD IT” when you complete something and he’s just so proud of you
sometimes you’ll just look at each other and just laugh,, no thoughts head empty
will chase you around with a spider
Tumblr media
*playing a game “one more round” “You said one more round 2 hours ago”

Loves watching movies with you bc he gets soooo invested
Bomb taste in music
will try to be cute to get out of things
Terrible rap battles
will fight you for the good side of the couch
Likes to squeeze your cheeks (not those ones….well.. actually…?)

I feel like his love language is quality time,, he just likes being with you and it doesn’t matter if it’s just chilling at home or going out to doing an activity
Conspiracy theory believer…. … like idk which ones but this dude is smart and logical he has to believe in some
Gets frustrated when he’s not good at something immediately
Will wink at you for absolutely no reason
Gets hyper-fixated on things

I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call
Tumblr media
OK so here we are with the penultimate part! BIG MASSIVE THANK YOU to the absolute loves of my life @pucksnsticksnhockeyboys and @fratboytj for helping me write this because I am a dumpster fire of a human and this would still be unfinished had it not been for them 💛💛💛
Hope you like it!
Read the whole series:  I hate the way you talk to me and the way you cut your hair // I hate the way you drive my car // I hate it when you stare // I hate your big dumb combat boots and the way you read my mind // I hate you so much it makes me sick, it even makes me rhyme // I hate the way you’re always right // I hate it when you lie // I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry // I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call // But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all

“This right here is our issue!”
“I don’t care. You need to leave.”
---------------
You and Evelina were leaving for Los Angeles the next day, the presentation not quite done yet as your boss bombarded both of you with texts asking for updates while you were just trying to relax at home after what had been a stressful week of work. The two of you had turned into gremlins as soon as you came home, hair tied back, sweatshirts on, hoods up, facing each other while sitting cross-legged on your living room floor, typing faster than you probably needed to every time your boss sent a new suggestion.
“Does he really think adding in a transition between these two slides is going to do anything? Like, there are no other animations in the entire presentation, why these two slides?” you huff, pushing the fly-away hair out of your face as you look to Evelina, hunched over her laptop with her computer screen illuminating her face.
Your phones continue buzzing as you try to put the finishing touches on your laptops. “Whatever this man is smoking, I need some to deal with him,” Evelina mutters. You look up from your computer, questioning the statement that just came out of her mouth. “What?” she asks, “Don’t act like you wouldn’t, too.”
“I’m texting him and telling him we’re going to stop for the night and talk with him in person about it tomorrow at the airport and on plane,” you tell her, setting your computer down next to you. You lay down on the floor, stretching your body out with your hands over your head, your toes pointed, groaning so loud you practically scream as your phone lays silently next to you.
“Have you heard from Matthew?” Evelina asks, breaking the silence that was normally broken by texts from him.
You shake your head, sitting up again. “Not a word.”
“Have you tried to talk to him?”
You take in a deep breath, closing your eyes as you pick up your laptop again. “Nope. Nothing posted on our stories on Instagram or Snapchat in a week, no texts, no calls, no Facetimes, our streak gone on Snap. We’re both radio silent,” you start, trying to fight back the tears that you knew were coming. This was for the best, maybe. You didn’t need to be preoccupied with the idea of liking someone that was just going to hurt you. He was only meant to be your friend. Your best friend.
“I’m sorry, babe,” she says, turning her head. A small piece of paper under your couch catches her eye, stretching to see what it was. “What is this? ‘For Ev and Hg’ Who’s Hg?”
“I think that’s me,” you say, reaching for the card, Matthew’s messy writing scrawled across the small paper. It must have fallen off the box that had the jerseys in it, you figure.
“That’s not right,” she says, pulling a laugh from you.
“Matthew calls me that: Hg is the chemical symbol for mercury, coming from hydrargyrum, the Latinized form of the Greek word hydrargyros, which means water-silver. Mercury stops oxygen from reaching the brain and it drives you crazy. He’s saying that I drive him crazy,” you explain, a sad smile on your face as you play with the card, curling the corners of it slightly just so you had something to do.
“That is surprisingly smart and cute for him,” Evelina gushes, a sudden wave of sadness washing over her. “I think this is my fault,” she admits.
“What?”
“Matthew not talking to you. Matthew knowing about the list.” You stare at her, not sure what to say. What was she talking about? “I told him about it the night you started it.”
“What the fuck?” you scream, “That’s the reason we had this whole fight in the first place. That’s why we aren’t talking right now. Ev, you ruined my friendship with Matthew!”
“You’ll get through it,” she tries to reassure you, unable to look at you. “Couples fight all the time.”
“We were not a couple!” you yell, standing up. “And now, because of you, we never will be.”
“Is that what you wanted?” she yells back, getting up with you as if you were about to start physically fighting. “Do you want to be a couple? Or do you just want him to be your friend? I don’t care anymore, but until you figure out what the fuck you want, you can’t fix this.”
You look down at your feet, wiggling your toes in the socks you had on. “You’re right,” you admit to her, trying to stay as calm as you could. “But why did you have to tell him about that list? What do you think it’s like to find out that someone you care about has been keeping something like this from you?” You stand there quietly for a minute, neither of you sure what to say to the other. “I’m going to go to my room,” you say, finally breaking the silence, “Just, don’t bother me for a little bit, ok?” You don’t let her answer, picking up your computer from the floor and retreating to your room to lock yourself in for the time being.
Evelina sits down on the floor, trying to figure out what she can do. This was her fault. Or was it yours? She had suggested the list, but you were the one who went along with it. She made the bet, but you wouldn’t drop it. She wanted you to be with Matthew, but you have been fighting it no matter what everyone else tells you.
She shakes her head, picking up her computer, a reminder from her calendar coming up in the top corner: Flames @ Kings, 7:00 p.m. Friday. Staples Center. With all this bullshit, would you even still want to go to the game? Evelina pulls up her phone, hearing loud music coming from your room, thankful that you wouldn’t be able to hear her conversation.
“I can see on her Spotify that she’s playing the playlist we entitled “depressed bitch” when she broke up with her last boyfriend and I can’t stand to see her like this. Why did you have to bring up the list?” Evelina barks into her phone.
“Why did you have to have Y/N start the list in the first place?” Matthew’s voice comes through on the other end. “With no list, then we wouldn’t be in this fucked up mess in the first place. You’re the reason I’m not talking to her.”
She knew he was taking his anger out on her. And he’s right, as much as she hated to admit it. “I know it’s my fault,” she says, begrudgingly, “which is why I’m trying to fix this. She cried for five hours after you left last week. She did not sleep for two days and I think the only reason she did was because our boss is an exhausting jackass. It’s because of you and me, and she’s made her peace with me as far as I can tell. I need you back in the picture.”
“Why?”
“Matthew,” Evelina groans, hating that she had to explain her reasoning to him, “you’re good for her. You’re good to her. You listen to her. You hear her. From the moment you met her, you were absolutely infatuated with her.”
“Yeah.”
“So why haven’t you talked to her in a week?”
She hears him let out a deep sigh, swearing she could hear him sniffle as if he were crying. “Because I’m in love with her. I love Y/N. And I know that the more I try to pull her back to me, the harder she’s going to push away.”
“Why do you love her?” Evelina asks, grabbing her computer, an idea popping into her head as she balances her phone between her shoulder and her ear, pulling up a blank document.
He scoffs, starting, “Her way of relaxing herself is by ranting about obscure facts that no sane person would actually care enough to read, let alone commit to memory. And she absolutely lights up when she tells you this stuff. She has this, this soft smile that still somehow reaches her eyes when she’s talking. At the end of her rant she makes that face where she scrunches her nose because she thinks it’s embarrassing that she just spewed all those facts to you.”
“Keep going,” Evelina instructs him, her fingers flying over her keyboard as he talks.
“Are you typing?”
“I’m working on...work. Keep going, I’m listening,” she says fast, hoping that he wouldn’t question her.
“I like how she dresses, and I know you think she doesn’t have good style but hear me out: she dresses how she’s comfortable. She doesn’t dress up often because it’s not something she wants to do so it’s not something she does do. But, fuck, when I see her dressed up in the slightest, she looks beautiful. She looks great in anything she wears.”
Evelina couldn’t help but smile as she continued to type, not even needing to egg Matthew on to keep spilling his guts to her, his voice getting more confident with everything he listed. “Have you ever noticed how she doesn’t hold a pen correctly? What was it, her grandmother taught her to write outside of school so when she went to school and already knew her teachers saw that so they didn’t focus on her and catch that she was holding it wrong? So now she’s constantly playing with it to distract herself from that fact, which makes no sense, but whatever. And she has ink all over her hands all the time because she keeps twirling it between her fingers and dropping it.”
“She’ll joke that it’s ‘abstract art.’” Evelina cuts in, both of them laughing.
“Come on, even you love that. She’s so stubborn. Once she gets any idea in her head, she won’t give it up because she knows she’s right. It drives me crazy.”
“Mercury,” Evelina mutters.
“What was that?”
“We found the card that you wrote with the jerseys,” she explains, peeling her shoulder away from her face and holding the phone with her hand for a moment, “You call her Mercury because she drives you crazy.”
Matthew stays silent for a moment, forgetting that you were supposed to see him in Los Angeles against the Kings that Friday. “Are you still coming to that?”
“You mean is she still coming with me?” He doesn’t answer again, leaving Evelina to fill the empty space in the conversation. “I’m going to try to get her there. I want her there. And I know she wants to be there, too.”
“I remember the night we met,” Matthew says, changing subjects, not wanting to think about the possibility of not seeing you at that game, “it was just a normal night out with the guys and then two girls who we hadn’t seen before walked in. And normally we wouldn’t think anything of it, but,” he exhales, “I don’t know. The entire energy of the bar changed. All of us felt it. And then the two of you walked up to us. You were fucking annoying,” he jokes, earning a scoff from Evelina.
“Watch yourself Tkachuk, don’t make me mad right now.”
Rolling his eyes, even though he knew she couldn't see him, he continues, “The guys loved you immediately, it was like you had known them for years the way you fit in. But then there was Y/N. She’s your exact opposite: you were this loud force of nature but she was quiet. There was just something about her that I had to get to know her. I knew she was different around people she’s comfortable with and I just had to be one of those people. Couldn’t even tell you why.”
Matthew keeps talking, Evelina typing as he keeps telling her about his feelings. In a lull in your music, you can hear her laugh from your room, thinking to yourself that you were glad at least one of you was having fun with whatever it was they were doing. You finally sit up, having been sprawled on your back on your bed staring at your ceiling trying to think of something, anything that wasn’t Matthew. You look around your room, trying to ground yourself from the pain you felt from not hearing from him, not wanting to reach out to him to begin with. You see your computer on your dresser, forgetting that you put it there once you got to your room, getting up to put something on from Hulu.
Out of the corner of your eye, in the reflection of your mirror, you see a black sleeve sticking out from the rest of the clothing that was hanging on the back of your door. You put your computer on your desk, flipping through the clothing to see what it was. You pull it off whatever hanger it was on, a wool winter pea coat, definitely not yours.
Because it was Matthew’s. When you first met him, you were so comfortable around each other. You could go over his place with ease, not feeling awkward when you fell asleep on his shoulder while watching a movie, feeling completely normal when you woke up the next morning and used his bathroom as if it were your own, eventually keeping some stuff there for when you did stay over, no matter how little use it served you the night after the charity event.
He was the same at your place. He has stuff around your room everywhere, you never really blinking an eye at the pair of his sweatpants and the tshirt that were somewhere in your drawers for when he slept over. Not even a year ago, he left in the sweatshirt, the coat he wore the night before left on the couch without you realizing it, making its home on the back of your door only to get shuffled right up against the wood as you hung more and more clothing in front of it.
You walk over to your bed, not taking your eyes off the coat. You sit down on your bed, hearing some sort of jingling sound from somewhere in the coat. Digging through the pockets, you can feel something metal in the front right one, a piece of paper poorly folded around it. Should you be going through the pockets of someone else's coat?
Who cared at this point? You take out the contents of the pocket: a key and a receipt. Your heart was racing, having a feeling about what both of these things meant. The receipt was dated the night you went out to the bar when you moved to Calgary, the night you met Matthew and the rest of the boys. Matthew’s name was on the bottom signaling that it was his, a few drinks circled by who you assumed was him.
Those were the drinks he bought for you that night, the drinks he would always ask you if you wanted befor you could get a word in first, ‘vodka sour = lemon,’ and something else you couldn’t quite make out written on the side. The next time you were out with them, a vodka sour was the drink he bought you because you told him you liked lemon but hadn’t found a drink that you liked with it in it. That was the drink he bought you the night of the charity event.
On the back of the receipt, again in Matthew’s handwriting, ‘my home is your home, Y/N.’ In your hand was a key, with a lemon charm hanging off of it.
It was a key to his apartment.
You couldn’t begin to fathom the emotions that washed over you in that moment, knowing that he was going to give you his key, probably before you even thought of giving him one for your place. Fuck, you didn’t even give him one, Evelina did. You didn’t even think about it, and there he was, a key for you, planned out, thoughtful, meaningful. You felt like crying because of sweet it was.
You pick up your phone, pulling up Matthew’s contact to call him. Your finger hovers over the button. All you had to do was press the button, and you would talk to him for the first time in a week. Before you can tell yourself no, you hit the button, a picture of the two of you coming up on your screen, ‘Matthew, calling,’ rolling over your phone in bold white text.
You didn’t even know what you were going to say, holding the phone to your ear. Actually, you knew what you wanted to say, hearing the phone ring, and ring, and ring. It wouldn’t stop ringing.
It was a sign. One that you shouldn’t be calling him, hanging up immediately and blocking his number so that he can’t try to call you back. If you were meant to be with him, then he would have answered when you wanted to talk to him most. He would have called you first.
Every emotion you felt turned into anger. You wanted him to call you. You wanted him to be there for you, because if this were happening with another guy, Matthew would be the one sitting there on the bed with you talking you down when this hypothetical man didn’t answer.
“Mother fucker!” you scream, throwing the key against your door, letting it drop to the ground, wishing it was smashed.
Evelina hears you, hoping that the conversation with Matthew would end soon so that she can go check on you when he says, “What about how she’s always so quick with her chirps? I have never met someone who’s so fast with a comeback. She’s better than any guy in the NHL. Better than anyone,” Matthew says, still on the phone with Evelina, his voice getting quiet. “Better than anyone,” he repeats himself.
“I’ve known Y/N’s last two boyfriends and between her and Thomas recounting the high school boyfriend, I feel like I knew the third,” she says, partially regretting bringing up Thomas’s name, “You really love her?”
“Haven’t I said that already?” he snaps.
“Yes, but I want you to say it again. She is my best friend and has had plenty of people say that they are in love with her. You’re the first one she’s been in love with back, though.”
Matthew’s breath hitches at those words. If Evelina was saying it about you, then it had to be true he figured. “Of course I do.”
“Ok,” is all Evelina can say, leaving the two of them in silence for a few seconds.
“Uh, bye, I guess,” Matthew says, hoping the awkward silence that fell between them would end.
“I’ll text you later about something. Bye,” Evelina hangs up the phone, letting out a long sigh before getting off the floor. Wandering to your room, she knocks on your door, waiting for any sign of life from you to tell her she could come in. “What is this?” she asks after stepping on the key, handing it back to you, plopping herself down on your bed..
“Matthew was going to give me a key to his apartment,” you tell her, waving it around in the air.
“When?” You shrug, honestly not sure how long ago the coat was left there, not sure how long it had been in his pocket in the first place. “I need to ask you something,” she says.
Not really paying attention, that stupid key in your hand, you answer her anyway, “What?”
“Do you like him?”
“Him who?”
Evelina rolls her eyes at you, telling you who even though she really didn’t need to. “Matthew.”
“Of course I do. He’s my best friend besides you.”
“Do you love him?”
“Why hasn’t he called?” you ask, quietly, her instead.
Evelina sighs, “He probably wants to give you space,” she tells you, even though she knows the real answer. “He just wants you to go to him when you’re ready. You know he would never push you to do something you don’t want to.”
The two of you sit there in silence for a moment, neither of you sure what to say. Would Matthew want you to reach out first? If he did, why didn’t he answer the phone just now?  “Y/N,” Evelina presses, you knowing that she wanted you to respond to the question you intentionally left unanswered.
You pick up the receipt that was beside you, the key still in your hand, wondering how he could have thought yo give you the key before you even thought about it yourself. And why did he never give it to you? “Ev. I said no. He’s just like Thomas. He loves me and I don’t feel the same way, and I’ve lost him just like I lost Thomas,” you insist.
“You didn’t lose him,” she tries to reassure you. “This is going to work out.”
“How do you know that, Ev? He means everything to me. You and him are the two people outside of my family that I care the most about. What does it say about our friendship that we get into some stupid fight and now we don’t talk for a week?”
“Y/N,” she lets out a small laugh, “He loves you.”
You shake your head, swallowing hard as you turn the key over in your hand for what felt like the thousandth time. “If he did he would be here right now. He would have called, he would have done something to show me that he cared about me.”
“Y/N,” she tries.
“No, Ev. Can we just drop it?” you beg, reaching over to your nightstand and throwing the key and receipt in the drawer. “We have to work on our presentation, we leave tomorrow, and we still need to finish packing.”
The rest of the night was spent by the two of you not saying more than monosyllabic sentences to each other while you worked on the finishing touches of your presentation, packing the last of what you needed for the trip and triing to get your mind off Matthew. You zip your bag up, satisfied that you were finished when you see the jersey Matthew gave you sitting there on your floor, in a pile of other clothing you meant to put away.
You pick it up, like you did the jacket that was now sitting on the couch, a note laying on top of it for Evelina to give it back to Matthew. Sighing, you fold up the jersey, leaving your room to go put it with the coat. You didn’t want it. You had no need for it. All you could do was let it go.
You couldn’t sleep the night, any time you closed your eyes and managed to doze off, Matthew’s image flashed through your mind. Every single memory you had with him seemed to be manifesting themselves in your dreams, unable to shake him no matter what you did.The nights you spent together on the couch watching whatever was on TV, teaching him to make your favorite cookies, even though he burned them to a crisp no matter how many times he would check the oven, the two of you going Christmas shopping for your families, buying each other the dumbest gifts you could find to see who you laugh harder. Not a single bad memory came up, besides the last time you saw him. Was everything with Matthew actually that perfect? Or were you blocking things out?
Your alarm goes off but you were already awake for it, groaning loudly prompting Evelina to come running to your room. “Are you ok?” she asks in a panic. “Babe, did you sleep at all last night?”
You didn’t even want to know how awful you looked, just hoping that you would be able to cover it up with makeup and get some semblance of sleep while on the plane even if it were only a three hour flight. “Maybe an hour?” you guess, even though you were sure that was an over exaggeration. “Whatever. We have to go get ready.” You get out of your bed and storm to the bathroom, closing the door before Evelina could even say anything.
You looked like you had been hit by a truck, hating how you came across as you stared at yourself in the mirror. Your eyes were red, the bags underneath them so rich in color they could probably be designer, your skin discolored like you were sick. You would need makeup and a miracle to fix yourself at this point.
“Y/N?” Evelina says, opening the door without you inviting her in. “I found the coat and jersey.” You make eye contact with her through the mirror, pursing your lips and nodding as you get back to putting on your makeup. “You really don’t want them?” You shake your head, swallowing hard. If you kept them, then they would tempt you to go back to him. Getting rid of them was the only thing you could do. “I put them in my room for now, ok?” You nod again, still not saying a word.
“I’m worried about you,” Evelina says. “Even with those other guys you’ve broken up with, they have never left you this broken.”
“I’m over it. I’m just tired.”
“We both know you’re lying about this. You know how you feel. You know that you’re in love with him, you always have been.”
You put your makeup down on the counter, staring at the powder in it’s container. “I can’t say it.”
Evelina takes a step back. “What?” she asks, surprised by your response.
“Thomas said he loved me, and that was it. The friendship was over and we haven’t seen him in years. If I say it to Matthew, if I admit it at all, then it’s going to be done. It already is done and I never said it.”
Evelina could feel her heart breaking, trying everything she could not to start crying in front of you, worrying that it would set you off as well. “You know that’s not true.”
“I do in my head, but not in my heart,” you say, letting out a laugh, “That sounds like something from a stupid Hallmark movie.” Evelina lets out a small laugh with you as you continue. “Can we just drop it this weekend? We just have to get through this conference. And get through a weekend with our boss.”
“Ok. I’m gonna go finish getting ready, then,” Evelina says, backing out of the bathroom.
By the time both of you are finished getting ready, your boss had texted you that you needed to be outside waiting for him in the next ten minutes when they pulled up with the car that all of you were taking. “Ok, last check. Boarding passes?” you start your list.
“Mine is the front pocket of my bag, yours are in the folder you have with your computer.”
“Passport?”
“Same places as the boarding passes for both of us.”
“Computers?”
“Side pocket of your bag, middle of my bag.”
“Chargers?”
“Somewhere in my bag I have a phone charger and a computer charger for both of us.”
You keep going through the long list, both of you knowing where the other kept everything. You freeze when you get to the last thing on the list, written in Evelina’s hand writing instead of your own. “Jerseys.”
“I have mine. Yours is in my room.”
“Good,” you say, almost completely forgetting about the game.  You shake your head as if to physically shake the thought of Matthew from your mind. “Got your keys?” you ask Evelina, her waving them in your face as you grab yours, too. “Let’s go then.”
The two of you lug your stuff towards the door, opening it and ready to leave when you see him there. “Matthew?” you say, surprised to see him standing in your doorway, a bouquet of flowers in hand, a guilty expression on his face as he looked like he hadn’t slept for days. “What are you doing here?” you ask in shock, feeling your heart start to race.
“Can we talk?” he asks quietly, debating on stepping into your apartment or not.
“No. We’re leaving for the airport now, we don’t have time,” you tell him, trying to move past him.
“Come on, we need to talk,” he insists, putting his arm against the frame of your door to stop you from moving past him.
“Why should I listen to you?” you ask, looking up at him.
“Because I love you.”
