An absolute classic for a reason, we’re talking about BEAUTY AND THE BEAST today — about the trope itself, about how the 1991 Disney movie brought it back to life (yes, we see you, Dain), and about why we love the vibe of scarred and broken men in a castle being found and renovated by whip smart, bookish heroines. Spoiler: It’s patriarchy.

Are there any historical romance books you’re looking forward to being released in the final months of the year? I’m finding that my most anticipated releases for this year have already been released
Publishing for the sake of light book promo!
Generally, most of my most-anticipated reads of the year have released. But there are still a few I've got in mind, and I happen to have ARCs for most of them. Pretty much all of these authors I haven't read before, and I try not to read ARCs until we're about a month out from publication and I can have a fresh memory for the review; the books just sound good.
11/8--Some Dukes Have All the Luck by Christina Britton. Hero owns a gaming hell and has three wards to take care of--hence the marriage of convenience to a heroine obsessed with BUGS. As someone who once had a functioning "worm circus" (I made worms do tricks, I feel bad about it now) I am excited about a Bug Heroine.
11/8--Never Rescue A Rogue by Virginia Heath. Enemies to lovers story, and it sounds like the hero has a scandalous secret surrounding his birth and his claim to inheritance and the heroine is trying to sniff it out...? Which honestly sounds like an asshole thing of her to do, but I enjoy a problematic heroine.
11/8--The Duke in Question by Amalie Howard. Described as "James Bond meets Bridgerton", which. I'm going to replace "Bridgerton" with "historical romance" because.... I love James Bond, but I could do without Bton. Hero is a retired spy and heroine is his target, cat and mouse games ensue.
12/13--How to Win A Wallflower by Samara Parish. Hero unexpectedly inherits and is stuck with his brother's awful fiancee. Local woman apparently has a way to get him out of it, but they begin to fall in looove during the scheme.
12/27--Never Cross A Highlander by Lisa Rayne. Highlander freedom fighter hero accidentally kidnaps heroine, and obviously he cant let her travel home ALONE... This sounds delightful, and it's the first highlander romance I've seen where both the hero and heroine are Black.

@maximuses SAID: Rayn's in a sentimental mood, huh?—
It had been... almost a decade since Kim left Albuquerque. Since she stepped back from practicing law once and for all. She couldn't stomach the thought of carrying on as normal. Of putting people away when she was the one who deserved it. Of brushing shoulders with everyone who mourned Howard. The mere thought of returning to the office was too much, and it had even took Kim a good few months before she even began job searching in Florida.
Yet, she had eventually found herself. She did office work for a plumbing company. She found herself attending neighborly dinners. Chattering with coworkers between clients. Living a normal life where, soon enough, the weight of her past fell from her shoulders. She found her rhythm, and she wasn't alone in this new song and dance. She had Rayn, just as she always had. And, as she'd grown into her comfort, a familiar emptiness came back to her. A distant yearning for something more. The woman found herself daydreaming in her downtime, or stepping in to help Rayn wherever she could. Filing casework. Organizing contacts. Reviewing statements. Fixing errors...
Kim missed helping people. And she finally felt ready to admit such.
"Hey, so I was thinking... I think I want to go back into law. I—I started looking and found some local organizations I can get a foot in with." She sat up from her spot beside Rayn, pausing to listen for a reaction before stopping.
She glanced to her laptop then sat back. It seemed part of her was expecting... something from her partner. Shoulders briefly tensed, voice softening as she spoke again.
"I mean... If I go through with it. Nothing official, just aide work until I get a license with the State. It'd mean less hours with Palm Coast, but... What do you think?"
"Hey, so I was thinking... I think I want to go back into law. I—I started looking and found some local organizations I can get a foot in with."
At first, Rayn didn’t look up from the paper she’d been flicking through, occasionally picking up her mug of hot green tea to sip idly at it. She paused when she heard Kim speak about it. Some part of her figured the woman was expecting something explosive and dramatic and impetuous - like she’d once been used to when Kim lived with Jimmy. But Rayn wasn’t like Jimmy. She didn’t show a short fuse with her over little things, or gaslight her for her self-doubt, or verbally abuse her for showing autonomy. She viewed Kim as a person, not as a pawn. And that had taken some getting used to on her partner’s end.
“Oh, okay.” Rayn said, plainly and casually. There was a moment of silence between them before she looked up from the paper at Kim, peering over the rim of her oval glasses. “...Did you want to talk about it more or have you already decided that’s what you want to do?” Kim seemed a little stunned.
“You’re not... mad?”
At that, Rayn laughed a little and folded her paper, setting it down and scooting closer to Kim. A gentle hand rested on her shoulder, eventually migrating up to caress her cheek and then hold her chin as a gentle thumb smoothed over her jawline. “Why would I be mad? Baby, you’re a grown woman. You have all the intelligence and all the autonomy to do whatever you please. I’m not going to tell you what to do unless I think it might be dangerous. But other than that, I fully support whatever you choose to do and I will back you up a hundred percent: physically, financially, and emotionally. You’re my partner. Not my pet.”
Rayn’s words were enough to have her partner’s lip quivering with delight, joyful tears building on her lashes as she raised a hand to rest it on the back of Rayn’s. Her support meant the world to Kim, shown by how the woman slowly nodded and sighed in relief. It took her a moment to compose herself enough to speak and continue laying out her plan.
“I mean... If I go through with it. Nothing official, just aide work until I get a license with the State. It'd mean less hours with Palm Coast, but... What do you think?”
Rayn smiled. “I think that’s a fine plan, Kimmy Bits. Don’t worry so much about the finances. I’ll take over paying for things until you’re all caught up on Florida law practice. You’ve got your foot in the door, now just focus on getting the rest of yourself back into it one step at a time, alright? I’ll be with you every step of the way. You leave the rest of the worrying to me. Sound fair?” She leaned forward, planting a soft kiss on Kim’s forehead. A grin spread across her face when she drew back to see Kim’s tearful smile looking back at her. She nodded again.
“Yeah... Sounds fair.” She agreed.
“That’s my babygirl.~” She cooed, admiring the pink tinge that flushed her lover’s cheeks. “Now finish up your breakfast. Sooner you get to work the sooner you can get off, and the sooner I can give you your anniversary presents.” Rayn winked at her partner, a coy smile playing on her lips.

I'd Like Mine In the Rocks
It's the last day of spring! Jubel!!! I thought I heard something last night before Rayne went to bed, I thought it was the tv breaking, but didn't see anything. It was Jubel hacking up a hairball that she is now eating.
Howard got an opportunity to help out at the grocery store and we're all about that extra cash so off he went!
When he got back he ran off to a party at Shayne's...with Rob, whom he promptly left in the grass in the rain...facepalm.
Where else would everyone gather, but in the bathroom... and Joanna! I know that is not your normal formal wear!
Hmm...It's I wonder if Shayne ever got over his feelings for Joanna. Poor guy, she's happily married so he's been friend zoned for life.
More coupling up and it looks like I'm going to have to stage another wedding album! I was wondering when these two would tie the knot, they've been engaged for like a year!
Rayne was back at work again.
In the meantime, it looks like the wedding party went well and Marsha gave birth!
Not pucntual!!?? Try in LABOR!!
Woot Woot! We finally have enough money to finish off that second bathroom! Down to $919 again after paying bills, but it's a lot better than where we started the week! Phew! That was a ride!
Oh Kyle! What has been happening with you lately!? Getting demoted, breaking up with Alicia again, living on your best friend's couch.
Rayne must have been stir crazy because she was randomly pulled to the top of the waterfall. Umm...girl, what are you doing??
No, really...What are you doing? IN THE ROCK!! LOL!
Aaaaand I'm just now noticing that the keg I bought waaaay back when Thomas and Corinna got married is STILL at the park! LOL!
Nothing out of the ordinary here...just a picture of the destroyed couch and Jubel asleep in the arcade across town...so random.
I leave you with this amazing image of Sharon about to get abducted when I got done switching out her formal wear for the album save I'm about to create...I'm so sorry Sharon!

Hey Rayne! Here’s a reverse music rec ask, I was wondering if you had any instrumental music favorites, or just anything you’ve been listening to lately?
Hey there, my lovely!
Ooh! A reverse music rec ask.
Nice! Instrumental favourites...oh wow, where do I start? When it comes to instrumental, I’m a massive Hans Zimmer and James Horner fan.
My go-to Naruto tracks:
Sadness and Sorrow
Grief and Sorrow
Neji vs Hinata
Man of the World
Loneliness
And below are some of my favourite non-Naruto instrumental pieces (from some of my favourite films too; I pretty much love the entire The Last Samurai soundtrack but will try to list top few examples)
A Way of Life (The Last Samurai) - Hans Zimmer
A Small Measure of Peace (The Last Samurai) - Hans Zimmer
Idylls End (The Last Samurai) - Hans Zimmer
Waters of Irrawaddy (Beyond Rangoon) - Hans Zimmer
Surrounded (The Man in the Iron Mask) - Nick Glennie-Smith.
Promontory (Last of the Mohicans) - Trevor Jones & Randy Edelman
To the Stars (Dragon Heart) - Randy Edelman
The John Dunbar Scene (Dances with Wolves) - John Barry
The Kiss (Last of the Mohicans) - Trevor Jones & Randy Edelman
The Ludlows (Legends of the Fall) - James Horner
A Gift of Thistle (Brave Heart) - James Horner
Sam’s Gone (I Am Legend) - James Newton Howard
I’m sure there are many, many more but these are the instrumental ones that immediately spring to mind, luv! Hope you enjoy! <3

The first books I remember reading were the stories of King Arthur and Greek mythology. They were violent and sexy, in the context of the struggle of good humans vs evil monsters, with the monsters sometimes being human too. I went on to gobble up Robert E. Howard’s stories of noble barbarians and chivalrous anti-heroes like Conan and Soloman Kane. My son is named after one of my favorite REH characters, which I admitted to D only well after the fact. I still enjoy tales of good vs evil in gritty primitive settings.
Except now the stories I read, written by the likes of Joe Abercrombie, S.M. Stirling, and A.E. Rayne, are far more nuanced and “realistic”(?) in terms of character and setting. Actually, thinking back, Howard got a lot of that right in the worlds he described as so smelly and filthy as were the people. This is the problem I have with the new fantasy serials as seen on TV.
I’ve read the World of Fire & Ice series twice. You probably know it as Game of Thrones. I haven’t watched it yet but I’ll give it a try at some point. Up till now, I’ve been sure I’ll be disappointed. The world and characters in the books were beautifully written, in the most repugnant terms. I suspect that aspect didn’t make it to video. I couldn’t get through the first episode of Peaky Blinders. Though I love all things England, the London and its denizens portrayed on screen were entirely too gorgeous, the shit and piss filled streets looking more like delicious Crème brûlée.
There’s a new series just starting on Netflix called “The Witcher.” I’ve not read the novels but I was vaguely aware of the premise so seeing it was starting today, I read a short review and had a look at the official trailer. Yeah, probably not.
All the characters are beautiful, clean, well-groomed, and have better teeth than me.
