An absolute classic for a reason, we’re talking about BEAUTY AND THE BEAST today — about the trope itself, about how the 1991 Disney movie brought it back to life (yes, we see you, Dain), and about why we love the vibe of scarred and broken men in a castle being found and renovated by whip smart, bookish heroines. Spoiler: It’s patriarchy.

Another reading update
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Epitaph by Mary Doria Russell - 4.25/5 stars
Surprise queer love story at the end! Also made me regret that we didn't stop in Tombstone, AZ, when we drove by it on our vacation to Arizona last year.
The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem - DNF at pg 18
Prince and Assassin by Tavia Lark - 5/5 stars
This book was A DELIGHT. I didn't expect to love it so much because I've been burned by so many Rainbow Crate selections, but goddamn this one was good. I ordered the next five books in the series from the parking ramp where we watched the eclipse, lol.
Briarley by Aster Glenn Gray - 4.75/5 stars
The gay, WWII retelling of Beauty and the Beast you didn't know you needed. Really lovely novella.
New Adult by Timothy Janovsky - 4.5/5 stars
Time travel! Crystals! I'm a sucker for books where the main character realizes that their career isn't everything (clearly, since my debut novel is about that). I love Timothy Janovsky. He's so good at writing characters who are deeply unlikable but who you root for from page 1 to get their shit together.
Stars, Hide Your Fires by Jessica Mary Best - 3/5 stars
A Glorious Mess by Kennedy Sutton - 4/5 stars
This is a prequel to a series I haven't read, but I really enjoyed it!
The Midnight Kingdom by Tara Sim - 4.25/5 stars
This is another high fantasy where I was like, okay, what happened again in the first one...? It slowly came back to me, haha. I love Tara Sim and this book was just as good as the first in the series. Definitely excited for the conclusion.
The Body in the Back Garden by Mark Waddell - 4/5 stars
Cozy mysteries aren't really my thing, but I really liked this one. There was enough violence to keep it from twee overload.
The Bookseller's Boyfriend by Heidi Cullinan - 4/5 stars
The Path by Ariel Tachna - 4.25/5 stars
Aka, now I want to hike the Inca Trail. This was a great book about two guides on the Inca Trail in Peru (and if you know me you might know I have interest in guiding). Not only was the book just good, but I loved the exposure to a country that I don't know much about.
The Bachelor's Valet by Arden Powell - 5/5 stars
Hello????? This book is so good???? If you loved Freya Marske's The Last Binding trilogy, give this series a shot. It's very lighthearted, and I loved dumb, kindhearted Alphonse with all my heart from the first sentence. Also the cover is super pretty, I had to keep taking breaks to stare at it.
Assassin by Accident by EJ Russell - 4/5 stars
Tramps and Vagabonds by Aster Glenn Gray - 5/5 stars
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Okay so I knew I'd love this book, because I went feral for Honeytrap, which I read last year. God this one was so good too. It's about two young men who ride the rails in the Midwest during the Depression. James is homeless and Timothy has parents he could go back to...except he's in love with James, obvs. If you're a fan of Cat Sebastian's mid-century books (We Could Be So Good, The Cabots), PLEASE read this. Gray deserves to be much more widely read.
The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley (reread) - 5/5 stars
Here's my copy after rereading:
Tumblr media
Those are all the spots that were particularly emotionally devastating. This reread secures The Kingdoms as my favorite Natasha Pulley book. Maybe my favorite book, full stop. Missouri and Joe, god be still my heart.

Sunday reading recap (26-Jan-2020)
had a relatively decent weekend with a sleepover that consisted of eating delicious foods and watching Pride (which I will watch any time, in an instant) and Paddington 2, which was an absolute delight in every single way.
Tumblr media
For Real (Alexis Hall) - reread, still amazing. I just love the dynamic in this book so much - I’d love to see more younger dom/older sub but honestly I doubt most would come close to this level.
Gimme Shelter (humapuma) - 84K, Stucky - Bucky’s a homeless vet, Steve works at the shelter
Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, 1986 (A Nick & Carter Holiday Book 2) (Frank W. Butterfield) - novella -  I like these little holiday vignettes - not necessarily a lot of plot or action happening, but just a peek at familiar characters living life on that particular day.
His Boy Next Door: Season 4 (#31-36) (RJ Moray) - although I read all the individual episodes as they came out, it was a pleasure to reread them all together. I just really, really love seeing how much Jack & Channon have both grown, both inside their relationship and out of it.
oh meet me, my darling, where the sun sets over the barley (charlesdk) - 54K, stucky, modern no powers AU, childhood friends reunited
Briarley (Aster Glenn Gray) - OK so this WWII-era fairy tale retelling of Beauty and the Beast was as wonderful as everyone has been saying! all the things i want to shout about I’m putting beneath the cut below for spoilery reasons
plus 71K of shorter fic so
shorter work shout out to
Triptych (Thorinsmut) - 29K, Leverage OT3 - “Parker liked Eliot. Hardison liked Eliot. There was a space where Eliot could fit into their lives, closer to them. Parker could see it, like a hole in a security system. It would work.Getting her boys to fall in line, that's the difficult part.”
I [Heart] You (writeonclara) - 1K, a sweet, charming, short fic where Steve’s cursed with visible representation of his love for others and what that means when he sees Bucky. ❤️❤️❤️
all the things about Briarley I wanted to yell about to the world:
the setting!
the writing style!
an older MC!
a dragon!
invisible servants!
a two-legged dog!
the MC's daughter and her former schoolmistress setting off to solve his disappearance in a motorcyle and sidecar!
PUTTING THE TWO-LEGGED DOG IN A ROLLER SKATE!
definitely a romantic story but REALLY a fairy tale about LOVE in general
honestly recommend this so strongly; it’s pretty short, just barely over a the novella threshold

Snowflake challenge 2019, Day 5
Tumblr media
Woo, am I behind!  Well, let’s play some catch-up.
Day 5:  promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.  Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Hmmmm.  This one’s a little tough for me; in the immortal words of Eleanor Shellstrop, “I’m not really a joiner.”  It’s possibly one of the great ironies in my life that the thing that motivates me most artistically is a sense of community—see how active I’ve been in the Harringrove space recently—and yet, socially, I’m much more comfortable one-on-one.
Still, there are definitely some individual blogs I quite enjoy:
osprey_archer on Dreamwidth.  Jin writes intelligent and interesting posts about a number of subjects; her latest project has been watching and reacting to movies by female directors, which has been both fascinating and educational.  I’ve learned a surprising amount about Hollywood history (and, sadly, the incredibly sexist side of it) and discovered some very interesting films.  She also writes fanfiction (mostly MCU) and original fiction; I’m proud to say I helped beta her m/m WWII Beauty and the Beast retelling, Briarley, though even without the personal stake it would be one of my favorite stories.
featherycats on Pillowfort.  I enjoy Feathery’s art, the posts they reblog, and their unique and thoughtful perspective on many issues, including how complicated gender identity can be.  A rare older person who actively participates in fandom, their posts are full of nuance and compassion, which too often seem to be the first casualties of any Internet-based interaction.
marsza on tumblr.  I followed @marsza shortly after I really started using Tumblr, largely because I had enjoyed her Harringrove story The Last Ditch Efforts of Wayward Boys.  Her posts and reblogs are diverse, but often share an enigmatic sensuality that I adore, whether they’re quotes or pictures or gifs; her ask posts, too, exhibit that unusual-for-the-internet mixture of intelligence and empathy that I treasure.

Recent mlm reads
The Boy I Am by K.L. Kettle* - Speculative YA set in a dystopian future where boys are sold off to the female elite. I loved the poetic writing style in this!
Briarley by Aster Glenn Gray - A World War II-era retelling of Beauty and the Beast between a dragon man and a parson. Short and lovely, with the best dilapidated manor house!
Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune* -  I didn't connect with this one as much as T J Klune's debut, but it has the same type of lovely, gentle characters who you can't help but root for. I really admire Klune's creativity in the magical realism space, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
The Bachelor's Valet by Arden Powell - I loved this 'Jeeves and Wooster' style novella about a noble lord and his valet, set in a world with magic. The protagonist is utterly clueless, in the best possible way.
The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun - Unexpected romance between a producer and ‘the bachelor’ on a reality TV show set. Super cute!
Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell -  A incredible sci-fi romance with royal fake dating, ice-torn wilderness survival and sneaky political manoeuvring. This one is for fans of Lois McMaster Bujold (AKA, I adore it and need 17 more...)
Life of Melody by Mari Costa - A really imaginative graphic novel about magical creatures raising a daughter together - I read this in one sitting and it was pure joy!

Brittany S Pierce
Send me a Glee character and I’ll tell you my top 2 endgame ships, my top 3 friendships, and my top 3 crackships!
Top 2 Endgame Ships
Anyone who knows me knows I could only ever see her being endgame with Santana. She would never love anyone the way she loves Santana.
Top 3 Friendships
Brittina, Sugar and Brittany, Briarley - and Pieberry or Bike because I can't choose just three for her. Have a soft spot for Kurttany too if we overlook his interrupting her engagement. Unfortunately her friendships never got explored much onscreen, which is a problem for all Glee characters but they strongly hinted that she was friends with Sugar, Tina, and Marley.
Top 3 Crackships
Truthfully I don't really ship Brittany with anyone else in canon. Not because she isn't shippable but they never really gave her boyfriends she was compatible with (Artie was... okay at best but it was no deep love between them, Br*m was just a complete joke) and I can't really multiship her because I can only see her being truly in love with Santana.
It's easier to make up OCs to ship her with (but again I don't want to because Santana is the love of her life). If I had to crackship her with anyone, maybe Jake (He's very similar in attitude to Santana and he was the only valid season 4 newbie aside from Marley - also shallow but he's a great dancer and they look good together) or Matt. Maybe Matt might be too passive for her though but at least it would be a better option than Br*am.

Eyes? Happy? Smile? Fall? Rain? 👀 (i stg if at least one of those isn’t right)
eyes
- Penelope shut her eyes, but her mind was still racing.
- “Oh, that is very good.” Felicity’s eyes, oddly, were trained on the bed.
smile
- When they broke apart, they exchanged giddy smiles, he promised he’d call upon her mother with his mother later in the day (for what, Penelope was not sure, but her heart was soaring and she didn’t think to question his words), and she slipped inside.
- But Felicity smiled so sweetly that it was difficult to refuse her.
- “But, you know, Briarley knocks so loudly, and it was late, so I insisted I’d bring it up myself,” a cheeky smile grew on the younger Featherington’s face.
- She smiled to herself. In love.
- “I had gathered,” Felicity smiled. The notion seemed utterly romantic to her. She pat her sister on the forearm. “Tell me more.”

M/M romance novel recs
The last time I meant to do this I wound up procrastinating for, uh, approximately eleven months because I got fixated on Doing It Right, so... here are an arbitrary number of recommendations for books chosen unsystematically from things I’ve read in the last year or so, that aren’t as detailed or thoughtful as the books probably deserve, because the perfect is the enemy of the good and all that.
All of these are M/M, with a range of gay/bi/pan character identities.
Salt Magic, Skin Magic by Lee Welch - YOU GUYS I LOVE THIS ONE SO MUCH. I don’t think I’ve actually read the text version of it yet but I’ve listened to the audiobook narrated by Joel Leslie (available through Hoopla!) twice and this book is! so!! great!! It’s set just after the Great Exhibition of 1851--working  magician John Blake helped secure the structure of the Crystal Palace, and Thornby, who is mysteriously trapped on his father’s estate in Yorkshire, is livid at having missed the whole thing. Also oh my god this one goes HARD on the hurt/comfort, like I think there is swooning-from-injuries and being-cradled-in-the-other’s-arms in Chapter Two. I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH.
How to Howl at the Moon by Eli Easton - This is the first book in a series based on the premise that dogs who are sufficiently loved by a human, who then are left behind when their beloved human dies, can become Quickened--sentient, and able to shift into human form. So brace yourself to cry about sad dogs but on the bright side NONE OF THE DOGS DIE, JUST HUMANS. Now if you think this premise through for a minute you will realize that this could lead to some super hinky situations, because an adult dog, shifting into an adult human, is like... as little as three years old? and brand-new as a human? So you will be glad to know that this first book introduces you to the whole idea with the least-hinky possible version of the story: Tim is a human who comes to live in a town of Quickened, and Lance, the local sheriff and also a border collie shifter, is a third-generation Quickened, so he has grown up in a totally linear fashion. Books 2 through 4 then proceed to explore progressively more, uh, delicate permutations of the idea, but they are all great I swear.
The Werewolf’s Fae Mate & The Broken Faewolf’s Mate by Liv Rider - I read the second book of these first, because I could not resist the premise of a werewolf who’s been stuck as a wolf since childhood suddenly shifting back to human when he meets his true love (who has werewolf blood but is determined never to lose control and shift into wolf form). Both books are delightful and do werewolves without the whole a/b/o situation, building a whole rivalry between fae and shifters.
How to Bang a Billionaire (trilogy) by Alexis Hall - This is very much like 50 Shades of Gray but a) good and b) gay and c) Arden has a much better instinct for self-preservation than Ana and is willing to say “um you’re treating me like shit and I don’t care about your money more than I care about my own happiness, so I’m out.” Also the kinky sex is something they work up to over time, because of reasons. Lots of delightful secondary characters and a really lovely development of their whole relationship.
Briarley by Aster Glenn Grey (aka @ospreyarcher) - A Beauty and the Beast fixit set during World War II, where the country parson trespasses on the beast’s manor and then, when the Beast demands that he exchange his daughter for his freedom, says, “Uh, no, I’m not going to do that to my daughter, you lunatic, and also she has important war work to do” and stays put and makes the Beast adopt a disabled dog in order to learn what love is. And also the Beast is a fucking dragon and it’s great.
Seven Summer Nights by Harper Fox - Set just after World War II, with both heroes coping, with varying degrees of success, with their combat traumas. Rufus is an archaeologist and a war hero, but he’s missing the memory of the events that left him with his scars and medals, and attacks a colleague on a dig during a flashback. Archie is a small town vicar who’s lost his faith but still believes in looking after his people--and his church, which seems to have a really unusual history. Rufus is sent to Droyton Parva to investigate the archaeology of the church and to hide from his ruined career, and he and Archie run headfirst into some of the last remnants of magic in a mostly-mundane world. Amazing supporting cast of women (and one trans guy who gets a great happy ending although bits of it were... not written in a 21st century way which makes sense for characters in 1946 but, you know, it might be jarring. Also, content warning for offscreen death of an infant.) Mostly this is a story about finding, and creating, and protecting, the spaces where you can be who you are with the person or people you love, and, you know, also some weird magic? It’s great.
(Also I am just permanently recommending that you go read everything by KJ Charles, Cat Sebastian, and Keira Andrews, I have not gone wrong with them yet.)
Anyway, if there’s a particular kind of book you’re looking for, ask and I’ll see what I can come up with! And if you have if-you-liked-x-you-should-read-y suggestions related to the above, I’d love to hear about them!
[Cross-posted to my blog at dessalux.com]
