Arthur finds out which knights he can trust and which he can’t. Trust with Merlin that is.

“Are you sure that’s wise, sire?” Sir Elenor questioned as Arthur laid he and Merlin’s bedrolls beside each other.

While Arthur was up to his eyebrows in rage and confusion and shame, he was not about to allow his knights to think they can question his judgements.

Arthur leveled Sir Elenor with a look that might’ve caught the man on fire if the King had held a teaspoon of magic. Thankfully for Elenor, he didn’t.

The knight didn’t say anything further the rest of the journey back to Camelot.

Back on my "Merlin's home would definitely NOT have any central heating, running water, electricity because he can make it himself" (it LOOKS like it's an electric television, it's actually a magical rock) at two am but I think it would be really neat if

Merlin makes his home warm by magically warming up the specific room he is in. Especially at night where his magic slow down and barely keep the air surrounding his bed warm enough.

Which is not a problem when you are a warlock living mostly alone (your magic user friends and your and your friends familiars can warm themselves up as easily as you) but it can become a problem for an newly resurrected King.

Anyway, all of this because I think it would be really cute if Arthur angrily (while shaking and with a red nose) walk towards merlin's room to complain about the fact that he is cold and they end-up snuggling and cuddling.

Still thinking about how ambiguous Arthur's response is.

On one hand, we can interpret it as if Arthur, once again, has lost his faith in himself as ruler of the land so he's like "actually it doesn't matter if I live or die, Camelot's situation won't change: my people will be fine either way. With or without me".

But on the other hand, he's also kind of telling Merlin that he don't letting him die and wanting to help him to save his life doesn't change the fact that he just ruined them and everything they had with all his lies and deceiving so he should stop trying to win him back with his heartfelt phrases because Arthur's stance won't change as he will keep on wanting him lo leave him alone.

On both cases, my heart ends up broken.

I feel like it genuinely depends on the situation? Who they're with/where they are/how long they've been courting etc. Let's say this is post magic reveal, post Merlin being promoted to Court Sorcerer, and their courtship is sort of... public knowledge.

At the beginning, it's very stilted I think?? Like they have the whirlwind make out sesh after they both just sorta snapped, and it's great for like a couple days, then they realise... they've been friends and nothing more for ten years, and trying to navigate this new dynamic as very public figures is very difficult. Both of them are so desperate for it to go well that neither of them mess/joke around, or do anything that could embarrass the other. It's very formal and awkward, and the knights and Gwen and Gaius all just roll their eyes and wait for the second snappening.

But once they get more comfortable... Arthur tries to mess with Merlin more often, but Merlin messes with Arthur more successfully. After so many years of the way things were, Merlin definitely knows Arthur better than vice versa, so it's easier for him to play jokes on him/embarrass him in front of friends. He'd NEVER do it in a meeting or anything, though, and he doesn't do it much in public either. He might do if they're walking about in the market or playing with the kids on the street, but truthfully, Arthur doesn't mind that so much, because Merlin somehow hiding several flowers in his hair without him noticing humanises him to his people.

In terms of praise, I think it's pretty equal, but on different fronts?? Merlin compliments and praises Arthur more on a personal level: "That was kind of you." and "You have a lovely singing voice." and "Thank you for feeding yourself properly whilst I was gone." because Arthur doesn't really get that anywhere else?? He's got people praising his fighting and Kingly-ness and decision making skills and yadda yadda round every corner. But he very rarely has people compliment or praise him just for himself, he never gets praise for the things he does in his spare time/things he enjoys and chooses to do/the type of person he is. He doesn't get people wanting to look after him/wanting him to look after himself because they care about his personal well-being, instead of wanting him to run himself ragged because that's his duty.

But Arthur compliments and praises Merlin more on a professional level?? Of course he says nice things on private/personal matters as well, but it's rarer, because he's shitty at words/romance, but what he is good at is leading, and cultivating good workers around him. That, mixed with the fact that Merlin is new to court and utterly terrified of fucking up somehow, means that Arthur gives, and Merlin appreciates more, things like "Nice spot, Merlin, I never would've noticed that flaw in the paperwork." and "Thank you for talking the council through the creature's abilities." and "Well done for dealing with that conflict." and "Don't mind Lord Balther, he's an arse, and he deserved exactly what you said to him.".

It all balances out rather nicely in the end :D

it’s a selfish thought and arthur knows it because merlin has spent so much time hiding a vital part of his existence, his very being, all because of arthur. so he presses it down into the deepest recesses of himself and focuses on doing everything he can to support merlin, to give merlin the world he deserves. a world where he is free.

but sometimes, when he’s alone in his room surrounded by his endless responsibilities, he will think to himself, i am nothing.

merlin and the old religion hold him as this once and future king, but no matter what they say, he can’t understand why they think any of this is about him. it was never him. everything he’d done, every accomplishment and fight he’d won had never been his to claim. he was a fraud. he was a lonely king with nothing to his name beyond the blood on his hands, the blood staining his every crevice.

he isn’t the once and future king. he doesn’t deserve any of the praise. he is the moon, a piece of rock in the sky that shines only because of the sun. without the sun, the moon is worthless. without the sun, no one would have ever looked at the moon twice.

arthur had never been proud of his mistakes and his inaction when it came to his father’s slaughter, but he had been proud of the things he had done to keep his kingdom and his people safe and healthy and happy. he has fought and fought and fought only to discover he had never even landed a punch. every knockout, every victory he had held up to hide the ugly nothingness of his true, empty self was never his to hold. with the discovery of merlin’s magic, any worthiness he thought he’d earned had slipped through his fingers like sand through a sieve.

merlin is beautiful and powerful. merlin is a god amongst men, a gift given to this world, given to arthur, and for what?

this prophecy for arthur was always about merlin. he carried the weight, he fought and fought and fought and he won, merlin was the one who had carried this kingdom on his back until they reached the safety of the golden era of the current day.

it’s a selfish thought, to be thinking of himself in relation to merlin’s magic when merlin has suffered every single day because of arthur. and yet, in those moments, he can’t help but wonder why he was born at all, why he was named savior of a group of people who would’ve never died if only he had stayed unmade, a whisper of nothingness in his mother’s womb.

his first breath caused a massacre, a genocide, and yet he was given an angel and a title and a prophecy of greatness he could never actually fulfill.

he would never tell merlin about these thoughts he had. merlin would end up feeling guilty somehow, would carry the weight of arthur’s worthlessness even more by taking on the deserved revulsion arthur had for himself.

no, he couldn’t tell merlin about this. merlin would tell him he was wrong, would try to talk him up and fix it. would use that endless kindness to tell arthur endless stories about his own importance. merlin would shine his sunshine on arthur until arthur forgot he was just a lump of rock. he wouldn’t rest until arthur loved himself, until arthur took all the credit for merlin’s own accomplishments again.

no, he would keep this to himself. he would give merlin the attention and love he deserves. this story isn’t actually about arthur pendragon. it never was.

Well, after many research on ao3 for very specific kind of fic I guess I will have to make my own food.

Hopefully I won’t forget and write the fic but : post canon AU where Arthur, Gwen (*insert awkwardness of Arthur finding out he was in love with Merlin in the last ep and Gwen trying to break the new that she and Leon got married + Lancelot in the background *) and the knights come back but like… 300ish years after their time and like. They get caught with a group of strangers by *insert guys who were ‘just’ doing ‘mildly’ illegal magic things but Arthur &Co walked into it so they caught them*

Anyway, Arthur Gwen and the knights are like stressed + trying to find out what is happening (while being in a cave and chained. What a way to come back to life—)

one thing that keeps me up at night is how, as people have pointed out before, arthur loved merlin simply for being merlin, regardless of magic or destiny etc., but how in some ways, that doesn't exactly apply the same way the other way around now does it?

like. i mean obvious merlin loved arthur for just being arthur, man would have never stuck around otherwise and one may even argue that later on, he actually did put arthur over destiny repeatedly (although i will say i agree only partially with this because why wouldn't he protect arthur above all else, if it's arthur who is supposed to make it happen! that said yes, most of his motivation to keep arthur alive came from arthur being his friend, not some higher calculation.)

thing is. arthur wouldn't exactly know this. arthur in fact in the finale seems to grapple with this a lot, if not most. the idea that to merlin, too, he had been a means to an end, as to so many others, whether in them wanting to use him, or wanting to get him out of the way.

there are very, very few people (gwen, pretty much as the only one alive) for whom arthur was just arthur first, king and destined peace-bringer, prince and first knight etc etc second. and i think if not for the whole, you know, dying business, it would take him a long time to actually, fully believe that merlin was one of them, after all.

which is just fucking heart-breaking, innit.
