This show has ruined my life. WHHHHHYYY!!!!!
"I'm not going to lose you."
"Just hold me...please?"
Patting his hand...
"For the kingdom you helped me build."
Grabbing the back of his head like that.
"Stay with me."
The rage, sadness and desperation.
The forehead touch.
Old man Merlin...still waiting.
They love each other so much...
I'll never be over this.

The finale to Merlin is devastating, but you know what kills me? The tiny glimpse the episode gives us as to the banter we could’ve gotten if we had an earlier magic reveal:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arthur is dying. And yet he gets this incredibly fond look on his face when remembering the day they first met.
Arthur is dying. And yet he looks at Merlin, the person who’s only just revealed his decade long lie regarding this thing that Arthur’s been raised to hate, and he jokes that Merlin cheated during their first meeting.
Arthur is dying. And he doesn’t really care that Merlin has magic. Only that he lied to him.
Can you imagine all the other moments of banter we could have had as Arthur found out all the other things Merlin did? How he didn’t really know how to juggle and that Arthur had a donkey voice for a bit because Merlin allowed it?

Sometimes, I think about how Merlin purposefully turned Arthur against magic twice—the first time to save his soul and the second to save his life—so when he finally told Arthur he was a sorcerer, it was the ultimate bamboozle.
“How could the bumbling idiot I’ve known all these years have been my greatest protector the whole time?” Yeah, sure. But also: “How could a sorcerer have chosen me over magic? Over his own freedom and the freedom of those like him? Over the gods who created him and the religion that saves him?” It’s one thing to die for someone and another thing entirely to give up who you are for them.
Obviously, Merlin was wrong, and that’s why playing God had an effect opposite to what he’d intended. But I think it’s so interesting to consider how Arthur might have viewed this confession. He was betrayed by Morgana because she loved herself more than her own brother and betrayed by Uther because he loved himself more than his own son. And all of this while Merlin, at first, fell in love with the cause and, then, even more with the man behind it. His loyalty to and love for Arthur was so pure it turned sinful, and I don’t think Arthur would have ever gotten over that. If he hadn’t died.

I know it's been well over 10 years but sometimes it still just strikes me that this actually happened? between two supposedly straight friends? in a family show on the bbc in 2012?

If the Merlin Finale has a million fans, then I am one of them. If the Merlin Finale has ten fans, then I am one of them. If the Merlin Finale has only one fan then that is me. If the Merlin Finale has no fans, then that means I am no longer alive. If the world is against the Merlin Finale, then I am against the world.

Hello, today I wanted to share with you my very own interpretation of this scene 👇 because it haunts me to this day.
Tumblr media
The first thing we see after Kilgharrah says goodbye is the lake, and then Merlin slowly caressing Excalibur's pommel with longing.
Tumblr media
Merlin is holding Arthur's sword. The sword Merlin made for him. The sword that made Arthur believe he could be king. The sword he has held so many times in so many battles. The pommel is still warm. Merlin is running his thumb over it, holding the ghost of Arthur's hand.
Oh, but this sword is more than Arthur's sword. It's a sword forged in a dragon's breath, the weapon that was able to kill Morgana. Possibly the only thing that could kill Merlin as well. Merlin is also holding a possibility. A key. He could use it. He could... He could follow Arthur once more.
Look at this terrible, terrible expression on his face as he looks at the blade. He's lost everything and he's got a way out at his fingertips. Literally.
Tumblr media
And, for a moment, it almost looks like he is going to take it.
Tumblr media
But Merlin wouldn't do that. Because if there really is a chance that Arthur will come back, then Merlin will be there for him. He will always choose Arthur.
So he decides to get rid of the sword. Because it's dangerous. It will always be a temptation.
Tumblr media
And then.
Then this happens.
Tumblr media
Look, I know it's supposed to be Freya. But, hell, no, it's not. I'm sure it's Arthur. I always assumed it was Arthur. It has to be. It's a very masculine forearm. And if you look closely at the shape of the fingernails you'll see that they look awfully similar to Arthur's.
This whole scene only makes sense to me if it's Arthur. So I'll always believe it's him, regardless of what the writers had planned. (After all, if you write, then you'll know that sometimes stories develop a mind of their own and find a way to tell themselves the way they are supposed to be, even if that goes againts the author's plans).
Because, look. Look at Merlin's reaction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His features have lost all trace of hardness. There's sorrow, yes, and weariness. But there's also awe, and acceptace, and a new light in his eyes that almost seems like... hope?
That hand holding Excalibur is the proof that Arthur is really gone, and yet somehow he still exists. That hand holding Excalibur is Arthur's last goodbye, and a promise. I'm gone, Merlin, but I'm still here. And I will return to you some day.
It's right after this scene that we see Merlin finally saying goodbye to Arthur. He's seen he no longer inhabites his body, so he stops fighting, he stops denying. He accepts. He says goodbye. He lets go.
Tumblr media
Arthur is gone, and Merlin is broken. He is saying goodbye to half of his soul. But he has seen Arthur's spirit, and he knows that a part of him is still alive. He knows for certain that his soul lives on.
Tumblr media
And that is why I know Merlin will always have faith in Arthur's return. Because he knows that Arthur is truly there, somewhere in the lake of Avalon.
And, some day, he will return to Merlin.

The thing is with Merlin,
It’s OBJECTIVELY NOT A GOOD SHOW.
The cgi and plot holes (plot in GENERAL) speak for themselves. The ending itself is HORRID. Yet there are so many people who love this show. Why?
Well, it’s a little funny feeling that you gain once you’ve watched it, where you will get random sudden urges to consume as MUCH MERLIN CONTENT AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN.
Usually they last like 2-3 days for me and I always end up so giddy and flushed after. Maybe this is actually a problem?
edit: guys 😭 ik it’s the characters…. I made a silly stupid post abt how I thought it was funny that I suddenly get increases of my Merlin obsession🥹🥹

Merlin never returned to Camelot. How could he? He loved Arthur more than genuinely anything in the world, and he failed him.
Merlin loved Arthur so much he betrayed everything he believed in, the people he’s fought for, the person he is… just because he thought it might save Arthur from Mordred. “There is no place for magic in Camelot”.
When he thought he was too late to save Arthur, he was prepared to just lay on the floor of the crystal cave and die. “I have no reason to go on” he told Balinor.
So as Merlin stood in front of Kilgarrah holding Arthur’s lifeless body, he remembered what he swore to Arthur, “I will protect you or die trying.”
A broken promise, a broken destiny, a broken man.
He may have asked Kilgarrah to end him right there, but then the dragon says it. The only thing that could keep Merlin going. “Arthur will rise again”.
That’s it. His fate is sealed with those words. He will never leave that spot because if Arthur should walk out of that lake without Merlin standing ready, he would truly have failed him. After all, he was born to serve him.
So, Merlin doesn’t step foot back in Camelot. He will never see a sight other than the one that brings him the most pain. Yes, he is very devoted to Arthur, but to stay at the lake is many things.
To stay is his punishment.
To stay is his hope.
To stay is his apology.
To stay… is the least he could do.

It truly demonstrates how much of a phenomenon BBC Merlin was that its ao3 tab updates with at least a full page and a half of fics daily as if the show didn’t end ten years ago
