Get to know you better...
Thanks to @cal-daisies-and-briars for the tag!! <3 I love the get to know you things and finding out stuff about my mutuals <3
LAST SONG:
God I've been listening to this one list on spotify (This is Linkin Park) for the entirety of writing lifeline so I'm gonna share that but also the specific last song I listened to from that list:
LAST FILM:
I'm gonna assume episodes of series don't count so the last actual movie I watched was Red White and Royal Blue <3
Tumblr media
CURRENTLY READING:
I listen to Audible every night to go to sleep and I've currently restarted the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan because it's one of my favourites, currently on Book 2 - The Burning Bridge
CURRENTLY WATCHING:
Oof. Well, alot of random 9-1-1 episodes while writing. 9-1-1 Lone Star when it won't derail my writing. Also The Ghost Whisperer which inspires me for my next fic, The Night Shift, Code Black, Shadowhunters and The Good Place. Yes I am ridiculously disorganised.
CURRENT OBSESSION:
Uh... Everything? Haha but the most recent hyperfocus is actually looking into Binaural Beats and Isochronic tones for creative writing and focus. The latest one I've been trying is here:
youtube
Just tagging all the mutuals no pressure though: @ladydorian05 @theotherluciferr @headempyonlyeddiediaz @acrock31 if you've already done it just ignore me lol

Note
hello! thank you for the weekly epic buddie fic rec lists! i’ve found lots of new favorites through them <3
i hope you can help me find a fic i read a while back! unfortunately, i don’t remember much from the fic except for a few details. i remember there was some sort of make a wish/it’s a wonderful life situation where the 118 and maddie lose their memories of buck.
buck tries to remind them, but ultimately he gives up and moves to a remote cabin in the woods. there, he becomes a camp ground caretaker (possibly a park ranger?) and writes a series of letters to the 118 thanking them for all the memories.
athena and the 118 take a few days off work to find buck because they want to get to the bottom of the mystery behind the guy who keeps sending the letters.
the last thing i remember is that eddie was upset because he could see himself falling in love with the person (buck) in the letters and was frustrated with his inability to remember buck.
i really hope you can help me out - i’ve been looking for a while and am starting to get frustrated and turned inside out over it 😅 thank you!
You’re welcome ☺️
Pretty sure that’s a chapter from Cal’s @cal-daisies-and-briars Coma-Verse of Madness fic!

muse: briar hill, 21-29, park ranger. plot: honestly there isn't one please take this anywhere interesting. horror. supernatural. literally throw anything my way thank you. open to: anyone but i'm a slut for f/f
Tumblr media
the cigarette burns in exactly the kind of way she likes, the smoke filling her lungs briefly before she allows it to billow out in front of her, the night around her so dense she looses sight of it almost immediately. working this late at the park was always a fucking experience, there was always something to see, some fucking idiot in trouble. tonight had been a relatively calm night all things considered, she'd even managed to sneak aware for her second cigarette of the night - though her boss would fucking kill her if he knew she was smoking in the non-designated areas. the brunette turns on her heel, intent on heading back to headquarters, blowing another puff of smoke when she stumbles back for a moment, startled mildly by a figure. "shit, didn't expect you." her words muffled by the cigarette dangling from the corner of her mouth.

The Giving Tree Near Dumfries: The Treasure Map Filled with Family Memories and Clues
 By: Lisa Timmerman, Executive Director
While many people are drawn to Dumfries to check our extensive genealogical records, Allan L. Davidson came with a map from his deceased father. The clues: “From Dumfries follow the bed of an old narrow gauge railroad-rails and ties removed to an old mine dump cross brook and follow dirt road back past two shacks until it fords creek and find tree in right opposite corner.”
Tumblr media
During WWI, Allan Davidson’s father, H.F. Davidson, served as in the U.S. Marine Corps, spending a few months at Quantico before deployment to France. He used the opportunity at Quantico to look for a tree that J.R. Hoy (Allan Davidson’s great-grandfather) and J. Murray carved their names into during the Civil War. Once located, H.F. Davidson drew a map and carved his own initials into it, relating the story to his family and saving this precious map. Let’s  join Allan Davidson in 1997 as he headed to Dumfries police station meeting with then Lt. Charles Reid.
“He wanted to go with me on the search but couldn’t get away. He sent me to see Joe Calpin who has a “tourist trap” – Old Mine Ranch, an Old Mine Road; Petting Zoo for the kids and horseback trail rides.” In fact, one of his trails follows the old railroad bed. He, too, showed great interest and took me by foot – not horseback – to the old road bed. We followed this for about half a mile to the old mine dump, and crossed Quantico Creek on stepping stones without getting our feet wet…
We headed back downstream. The old road and two shacks my father referred to are no longer in existence. In a hundred yards we came to a spring run into Quantico Creek. I couldn’t decide whether this was the second creek referred to or not. In crossing this “creek” all we could find was a stand of old pine trees and almost impossible briar bushes. Not a beech tree in sight.
I was about to give up, conceding to time and nature, but Joe encouraged me on, telling me that we were then on Prince William Forest National Park land; and to go talk to the Park Rangers. This I did, Jacque LaVelle, a park ranger, found an old topographical made early in this century, which showed the old dirt road and two shacks; and more importantly, the South Fork of Quantico Creek about four hundred yards downstream from the bramble bushes I had been in earlier. The park rangers graciously took me in a four-wheel-drive vehicle down a private park road to near the confluence of the South Fork and Quantico Creek. At a point about seventy-five yards upstream on the South Fork where there was a faint semblance of an old road, we forded the South Fork – again on stepping stones. And there was “the tree” in front of us; right where my father’s map said it was! Nothing succeeds like success! My ingenuity never ceases to amaze me.
Time has made the carvings all but illegible. You can pick out a letter here and there by stretching the imagination to see what you want to see. After all the carvings are 135 years and eighty years old. But I am confident that we found the right tree. At least I will always think we did.”
The family researched the movements of J.R. Hoy knowing that he enlisted in the 144th Regiment NY Volunteers Infantry relying on James Harvey McKee’s Civil War Record book and research. They could place Hoy near Dumfries. They also tracked the movements of  three other family members serving in the Union Army: George Davidson (72nd Regiment of the NY Volunteers), John Davidson (89th Regiment of NY Volunteers), and Thomas Davidson (144th Regiment of the NY Volunteers). The Davidson family have faithfully served the country throughout their history. While George survived the war, John died from injuries suffered during the Siege of Suffolk (04/11/1863 – 05/04/1863) and Thomas died at the battle of Honey Hill, S.C. (11/30/1864). H. Fletcher Davidson served in WWI in the Verdun sector receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Silver Star, and the French Croix de Guerre. (Side-note: Cher Ami, a carrier pigeon, also received the French Croix de Guerre after delivering numerous crucial messages, despite significant wounds from gunfire). Allan Davidson served in the Air Force during WWII and the Korean War.
Tumblr media
So, did Davidson add his name to the tree? “My response “Not very likely with two park rangers standing behind me. They take a dim view of people carving up their trees!”

A lot of places are named after historical events, battles, and people, so keep that in mind. God/Goddess names tied to your world also work well. Places are also often named after things that the area is known for, like Georgia being known for its peaches.
My brain was fried by the end of this so feel free to add more!
I hope you find this reference helpful and good luck world-building!

I’m compiling a list of all my wips w/ summaries here to remind myself what all I should be working on and keep myself accountable - and if y’all wanna yell at me about them please do
(Also be warned there will be some spoilers in here cause I suck at non spoiler-y summaries)
Fanfics:
Dear Evan Hansen:
(Apprentice) Park Ranger Handsome part 16 (doesn’t even have a name yet I’m so sorry)
Evan and Connor’s first date!! They go to the orchard of course, and have more relationship conversation... and a picnic.
Fae Court AU
Prince Connor of the Winter Court falls in love with a human boy and acts on it, despite his parents having Rules against relationships with humans. The consequences are big but Connor and Evan weather them well.
Flash:
Soulmate AU (I’m thinking ‘Dream A Little Dream Of Me’ for series title)
A series of one-shots following the Arrowverse characters - with a bit of a focus on Team Flash and the Legends - as they find love and happiness , with some bumps along the way, in a world where you share dreams with your soulmate. Timeline is spread out from Stein and Clarissa’s first meeting to some point around mid canon.
endgame ships include Barry/Len, Hartley/Cisco, Wally/Jax, Sara/Ava, Nate/Ollie/Felicity/Lisa(it’ll make sense I promise), Iris/Caitlin/Shawna, and more
Role-reversal AU
In a world where Barry was kept strictly away from the file on his mother’s murder after he becomes a CSI he grows resentful and distrusting of law-enforcement and a little quicker to recognize that he can’t entirely fix the issues with the police from the inside. So when he wakes from a nine month coma with super speed his first thought is how much he can shove the police’s faces in the fact that the system isn’t perfect and needs to change... he becomes the world’s fastest thief - unbeatable. At least until he goes after a certain diamond at the same time as one Leonard Snart, who walks away from the encounter looking to the world like a hero and gets a sweet taste of positive press that he’s not all that eager to give up.
Harry Potter crossover
Snart and Rory go “backpacking across Europe” on a ridiculous challenge to steal one thing in each country. Their last stop is in England and they’ve set their sights on a suburb in Surrey... which leads them to noticing the treatment of the young nephew of their potential target. Being survivors of abuse themselves they decide to remove him from that environment... along with all of Vernon Dursley’s valuables. Raising a kid is hard, raising a magical kid while maintaining positions as master thieves? ...piece of cake...
Check Please:
Moving On
When Jack and Bitty go through a messy breakup their friends are torn and Bitty is uncertain about what to do, especially when he has to go back to Georgia - where he’s firmly in the closet - for summer break. He can’t talk to his family or his friends about all his conflicting feelings about what happened, so he somehow finds himself corresponding with the one person who he knows would understand - Jack’s other ex, Kent Parson. He also finds himself growing closer to the previous year’s freshmen on his college hockey team and the team’s new manager - especially when summer ends and they’re all handling the situation better than the rest of his friends - ie: behaving like nothing happened except that they’re immediately down to fight Jack at a moment’s notice.
The Umbrella Academy:
Ghost Dave (that’s what it’s called in my google docs but it’s definitely not gonna be the title of the final product)
Dave Katz has been haunting the surviving members of his unit for a couple decades when the story about the 43 women comes on the news; a story Dave had heard plenty about before he died from his lover, Klaus Hargreeves. In whose tellings of it he was one of the children born that day. He also had claimed a few times to be from the future so Dave was fairly willing to take this as proof he was telling the truth. Immediately Dave seeks out Reginald Hargreeves and the 7 of the children he adopted. Over the next 29 years Dave follows the young Klaus around, giving him advice and unconditional friendship and protection from the other ghosts the poor kid could see.
Circle Of Magic crossover
When Tris finds herself dropping out of some kind of portal in a strange land it doesn’t take her long to figure out that some mage had decided to get rid of her - and possibly her siblings - by banishing her to another world, one with advanced technology but not much by way of magic - if one didn’t count the six super-powered siblings she appeared in the middle of. At the same time, but also not, Tris’s adopted sister Sandry wound up smack dab in the center of a group calling themself The Commission who’re very interested in adding her to their ranks, she joins up but maintains suspicion. Daja, the third sister, follows a pair of assassins. And their one brother, Briar, falls into the Vietnam War alongside one freshly tortured Klaus Hargreeves. They all find their way back together eventually - with much fewer casualties than if they hadn’t been there
Harry Potter crossover 1
When an eighteen-year-old Klaus Hargreeves gets bored of being lookout on a mission in London and wanders into the bar across the street he isn’t expecting to find a best friend, but that’s exactly what happens. Lily Evans is a couple months into a break-up and still tired of her ex and his idiocy, especially after his most recent letter - a pile of stupid big enough to send her straight to her local bar. The two hit it off instantly via complaining about anything and everything and egging each other into doing the most ridiculous but fun things. Their night of fun turns sour when Klaus finds out his brother Ben died during the mission and at least one of his siblings blame him. Lily takes the broken boy back to her flat and let’s him stay with her until his visa to stay in England runs out. Thirteen years later the apocalypse is interrupted by a tired ex-professor bringing life changing news - Lily was pregnant when Klaus left England(they’d slept together a handful of times but were never more than friends with benefits), also Lily and her husband(the idiot ex who apologized and changed his behavior, Klaus was at their wedding) are dead and Klaus and Lily’s son was placed with his aunt Petunia(who Klaus has met and knows the boy never should’ve been put with) because only five people besides Lily and James knew who Harry’s father really was and the only one capable of doing anything about it had to find the wandering junkie first. Klaus handles all this about as well as a powerful veteran with a traumatic childhood can - fighting tooth and nail for custody and then raising the boy the best he can with help from his siblings and robot mom and shoving his son’s happiness and safety in the faces of everyone who did the boy wrong
Harry Potter crossover 2
Not long after the war ends Harry finds that he can’t stand staying in magical Britain any longer, so he takes his godson and moves to America. Six years later one of the kids who live across the street sneaks out his window, wearing only pjs despite the heavy snow. Harry finds himself staying up waiting for the boy to return to their street and making some hot cocoa - which he offers to the boy as soon as he sees him. It quickly becomes a Thing(tm); Klaus will sneak out his window in the middle of the night, go for a walk, and eventually wind up having hot cocoa in Harry’s kitchen. They form a strange friendship, one where Klaus has someone he knows he can go to when everything becomes too much - even if that means crawling through Harry’s window, collapsing on his floor in tears, and falling asleep on his couch, waking up just in time to get home before his absence is noticed. Three more years have passed when Harry and Teddy are idly watching tv and Harry sees a very familiar face as Reginald Hargreeves introduces ‘the inaugural class of the Umbrella Academy.’ When Klaus comes over that night Harry asks how much choice Hargreeves gave him and his siblings in their ‘heroics’. After some thought Klaus remembers how his brother Ben hadn’t wanted anything to do with what happened at the bank but was made to participate anyway. He answers honestly: they weren’t really given any. Thus begins Harry’s campaign to get custody for the kids from Hargreeves.
Original Works:
Four Elements Universe(a collection of stories set along one timeline - very far apart and with no overarching plot, just a shared world):
Sisa:
A secluded young king sneaks out of his castle and gets a job under a false identity in hope for friendship, then gives everything up to help his new friends and the rest of his people when he realizes the extent of his adviser’s corruption. Around the same time, a teenage master thief is hired to steal a specific box from the castle - and then to help another thief break her friend out of the castle dungeon - and uncovers several major secrets that might just change the fate of the kingdom.
Kings:
Bandit King Vakhtang’s life is irrevocably changed when he agrees to lend his men to a rebellion for a hefty amount of gold. Over time he finds himself growing fond of the boy prophesied to be the next king and learning just as much from his new employer about letting himself care and open up as he’s teaching the boy how to protect himself. (His best friend and lover is very proud of this growth and kinda wants to adopt the kid)
The Completely Unrelated Adventures Of Four People Who Had Nothing To Do With Each Other Beforehand:
Four teenagers in rural Texas follow a cipher they found in an old tome and discover that all four of them have magical abilities, and that their town may not be as average as they’d believed. As they delve deeper in this new world they uncover two different secret organizations and find themselves caught in the middle of a dangerous conflict over a powerful artifact - that may or may not be the kid sister of one of them.
Mythicals:
Six kids around the world each find objects - artifacts - that grant them magical transformations and abilities. Seven years later all six of them end up at the same prestigious performing arts school in New York. When they discover that they all have these artifacts and powers - and that New York and possibly the world is in danger - they team up to protect everyone else, and quickly become close friends. Though one of them has a secret that could drastically change how the others view them... and possibly risk the fate of the human race.
Eternity And Forever(this one does have an overarching plot):
Eternity Of Forever:
Back in the early years of humanity a young man goes up a mountain for his Trials of Adulthood - a series of three trials set to test a person on the traits of whichever three gods they’ve been assigned to serve - unfortunately for this boy he’s been chosen for the gods of empathy, loyalty, and love... three traits that do not come easily to him. In his desperation to pass his trials he cheats the system and gets caught. As punishment he’s cursed to live forever just on the cusp of adulthood but never reaching it, the only way to break his curse is to prove - with no possibility of dishonesty - that he’s capable of the three traits. Over the next few millennia he gets caught up in a war for the fate of all life on earth, and also somewhat adopts a maybe-alien and falls in love with a time traveler.
Throughout Eternity:
At some unknown point in the future all that’s left of the human race is a refugee colony on an island floating above the desolate remains of our planet. It’s into this that Quinton is born. But when it’s discovered that he can travel through time with just a thought he’s trained for a very important mission: to go back in time and stop the apocalypse. Shortly into his mission he meets an immortal teenager who claims to have met Quinton’s future self and who offers to help, telling him that first thing he should do is gather a team to help him - he even provides names and years. This little team becomes like a second family to Quinton, especially the pretend-aloof immortal.
Forever And After:
After the death of the closest thing he ever had to a father, Slythus finds himself applying to the superhero school the immortal had founded - despite knowing that even if he were accepted into the student body he’d never be accepted by the student body. Somehow he manages to get in... and even more impossible; manages to make friends. But even as he learns how to be good, his past is lurking on the edges of his new life and quickly becoming impossible to ignore - figuratively and literally.
Shadow Warriors:
After the dragon Svartr gets cursed protecting a village from invaders they offer their children to be trained by him - to take care of him as his condition worsens. Those selected and taught by him become known as the Shadow Warriors. Alexir was born several generations after the tradition began of sending every twelve-year-old up Svartr’s mountain for the selection and she never expected to be chosen, being much more focused on intellectual growth than physical, so when it happens it comes as a bit of a shock. She struggles to keep up with her peers in most of the lessons but refuses to give in, pushing herself to reach their level while also learning the complexities of friendship from them all.
Consequences(originally titled ‘Consequences of War’ until I realized it’s more about just consequences for actions in general - like: don’t piss off the powerful magical Being hiding out in the abandoned building):
After deliberately pissing off what they believed to be a ghost - or a false rumor more likely - a college aged idiot ends up being banished into a strange world... with a distinct change in biology(mostly in the area of hormones and primary sex characteristics). As they travel this new world in search of a way home - and back into their original form - they learn new things about themself and make interesting new friends. They find themself questioning whether they actually want their ‘old body’ back and then, when they begin to fall in love, whether they really want to return to their old world.

Stiles Stilinski:Black Mystic Force Ranger
A teen wolf/power rangers crossover, been really excited about posting this and would love to hear your opinion on it!
Stiles sighed as he parked his beloved jeep in front of the woods, just 3 days ago, he had left Beacon Hills to go to Briar Woods to learn how to control his spark so he could become Scott's emissary. He had asked Deaton to teach him, but he said that there was a better teacher here who could teach him more.
Stiles didn't really mind, sure, he had to go to a different school but it was the best for now. After being freed from the Nogitsune, he had been suffering from nightmares. Nightmares where he had killed Allison and Adian, Scott had bit Alison to save her life and her father had accepted that his daughter was now a werewolf. Aidan had been more fortunate (that was putting it lightly), Scott, Erica and Ethan had arrived just in time to save him and was now all three of them were part of the pack along with Danny, who had been told after he stumbled across Ethan half-shifted, he had freaked out a bit but accepted that werewolves existed and was currently dating Ethan.
The others had forgiven him but he couldn't forgive himself. He had almost killed one of his closest friends and couldn't shake the painful look on her face when 'he' had stabbed her. He needed time away from them to heal. Luckily his mom had a brother who lived here who was able to take him in, at least until he finished the year. They used the excuse that his dad had been kidnapped by a serial killer and Stiles had been suffering from nightmares and that's why he was staying with his uncle Toby. It was weird seeing him again, Stiles hadn't seen or spoken to any of his mom's relatives since her funeral, it wasn't his choice, his dad had refused to speak to any of them. Bless Toby's soul that he agreed to take Stiles in.
It had been hard to say goodbye to the pack, but they had understood why exactly he had to leave, leaving Scott was the hardest, they always had a hard time staying away from each other. So hard that the best punishment Melissa could give Scott was 'no Stiles'. He had already unpacked his stuff at his uncle's house was now meeting the teacher Deaton recommend.
It just so happened that the teacher lived in the woods, the woods that were apparently 'haunted'. Stiles had to bite back a laugh when he first heard that, he had dealt with Werewolves, Banshees, Kanimas and much more. A simple ghost would be a breeze. Taking a deep breath, Stiles walked into the woods, he had only walked for a few minutes when he suddenly felt a surge of magic. Glancing around he noticed that the trees around him were had lost their colour, from a light brown to a dullish darker brown, he looked behind him and saw that he did not recognise any of the trees behind him. Instead of being straight and long, all of the trees were wavy and leafless. He reached out in front of him and felt a strong surge of magic as the space in front of him felt like jelly.
"a protection barrier?" Stiles whispered in awe, protection barriers were very advanced magic, and for someone to make a barrier as large as this, had to be very powerful. But it also made him cautious, someone was using the barrier to protect something or someone. Someone dangerous. He continued wandering through the woods, keeping an eye out for any sign of a path or cottage, unfortunately, he didn't find anything. What he did find were 5 young adults (they looked older than him so he could call them adults); 2 girls and 3 boys, wandering around the woods.
"Hey!" a guy with red hair and wearing a blue jacket and shirt called "are you the old man's brother?"
"What?" Stiles asked as a girl with black hair and a brown skunk stripe in her hair and wearing a blue jean jacket hit the red-haired boy
"Chip! He's way too young to be an old man's brother! He's young enough to be his grandson!"

Missing man found in dramatic rescue on Boulder trail
Man heard yelling for help on the Mesa Trail
At 7:45 a.m., the sheriff’s communications center received a 911 call from a hiker near the Flatirons who reported hearing a male voice yelling for help. The caller believed the party yelling for help might be on the Royal Arch Trail, possibly between “Stairway to Heaven” and “Regency.” Approximately 10 minutes later, a second 911 call was received from the Mesa Trail near NCAR. That caller also reported hearing a male voice yelling for help.
The injured party, a 27-year-old Boulder man, was eventually located by rescue personnel on the Mesa Trail at Woods Quarry. He was found clad only in shorts and it is believed he was likely outdoors overnight, as he told rescuers he believed he may have left his shoes and shirt somewhere near the 2nd Flatiron. Rescuers found it difficult to communicate with the man on-scene, as he was hard-of-hearing, did not know sign language, and would not answer many of the questions he was asked. Once rescuers learned the man’s name, they determined he had been reported as missing to the Boulder Police Department last night.
The injured man was dehydrated and had suffered numerous scrapes and abrasions all over his body, which suggested he likely fell several times as he descended the trail and likely wandered through several briar-patches. A rescue member donated a pair of flip-flop sandals to the man, and he walked out to an awaiting ambulance, assisted by rescuers. The man was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of his injuries. The entire rescue operation took just over two hours.
While deputies are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the injuries the man suffered and why he was likely outdoors on the trail overnight, no evidence has surfaced to suggest foul play.
Agencies assisting sheriff’s deputies and emergency services personnel in the rescue include rangers from Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, and American Medical Response (AMR).

Goodbye Ranger 170VS, 4/29/19
Early in the summer of 2013, I got the boat itch.  I was 34 years old, and had never owed a boat.  I didn’t know the first thing about owning a boat, maintaining a boat or trailering a boat from one lake to the next.  One thing I did know: I loved to fish.  So naturally, a boat was what I needed to fuel my fishing passion.
I started scouring Craigslist, iBoats.com and boattrader.com.  I knew I wanted a Ranger, small enough to fit in the garage, and new enough where I hopefully wouldn’t have to worry about fixing things and maintenance.  I looked at many local boats, including one with my mom!  It was a beautiful candy apple red, 21’ Ranger, located in Farmington. It was a magnificent boat, but it was WAY too much boat for me.  Plus, I had my heart set on a black boat.  I had seen sparkly black bass boats on the lake, and I was sold on the look.  I quickly found out that small black bass boats proved difficult to find in MN.
I expanded my search to out of state.  That’s when I found it.  A seller from Indianapolis had a 2009 Ranger 170VS.  It was only 17’ in length and would fit (snugly) in the garage.  I contacted the seller immediately to inquire if the boat was still for sale.  The boat had been on the market for some time and he had recently reduced the price from $20,000 down to $18,000.  He was motivated.  The boat was 3.5 years old, but was virtually brand new.  There was only 11 hours on the 4-stroke Mercury.  Within a couple of days, I had struck a deal to buy the boat for $16,000, and made arrangements with the seller to pick the boat up in Lafayette, Indiana.  On Saturday, June 22, 2013, I picked the Ranger up.  I was a boat owner for the first time in my life.
Tumblr media
The first time the grils saw the boat they were just as excited as me.  Get this, they even asked to sleep in the boat (in the garage) that night.  Who was I to say no?  Pajamas: check.  Dolls: check.  Books: check. Ready for a slumber party!
Tumblr media
As excited as I was to be a boat owner, I had no idea how to actually get the boat from the trailer, and into the water.  I met up with my buddy Jesse at Lake Byllesby in Cannon Falls.
Jesse showed me all the in’s and out’s of my boat.   He also told me to start wearing a hat because the wind made my hair look completely ridiculous.
Tumblr media
But most importantly, he showed me how to launch and load the boat from the boat ramp.
Tumblr media
I distinctly recall the first time I tried to put the boat in the water by myself.  After talking with one of the guys from a local bass club, I identified Circle Lake as good first lake to practice launching/loading the boat without a crowd watching me.  So Dyan and I headed over to Circle Lake on 6/25/13 for an afternoon of fun.  Dumping the boat in the lake proved to be a piece of cake.  And fishing was successful too.  This was the first fish I caught in my new Ranger!
Tumblr media
Loading it up for the day proved a bit more daunting.  But hey, it was the first time doing it by myself.
Five days and two lakes later, Dyan and I successfully launched and loaded the boat in front of the big crowds at Crystal Lake.  The launch was crazy hectic with weekend warriors, but we pretty much looked like pro’s.  I also caught my first Tiger Musky that day!
Tumblr media
2013 had some really fun adventures as well.
Tumblr media
I took the boat out to Bismarck, ND to visit Mom and Dad, and we dropped the Ranger in Nelson Lake, a power plant lake!
Tumblr media
The early morning steam rising off the 85 degree water made this an eerie yet cool place to fish with Dad.  Dad even took home the prize for biggest fish of the day.  The only time he ever won that award in the Ranger!
Tumblr media
Dyan and I also spent an entire weekend in the Ranger roaming Lake Pepin and the deserted sand bars.
Tumblr media
Virtually the entire summer of 2013 was spent on the water.  Every free weekend was Dyan and me trailering the boat from one lake to another.  It never got old.  Why did it take so long to buy a boat?
Tumblr media
In July, Aaron and I fished our first bass tournament together.  Not gonna lie, I was super nervous.  Not only did I have the smallest boat, smallest motor and least amount of fishing experience, we had to launch and load the boat in front of all these semi-pros.
Tumblr media
To this date, I have yet to put my finger on what caused our success other than dumb luck, but Aaron and I found a school of 3 to 4 pound bass that bit on just about every cast.  We ended up with a sack of fish weighing about 21 pounds and won the tournament!
Tumblr media
In an August tournament, Jesse and I won Big Bass in the Ranger with this 4 pound lunker.  In the process of landing the fish, my super high quality (Wal-Mart special) landing net broke and landed somewhere in the bottom of Cedar Lake!
Tumblr media
The money we earned on this fish went toward buying a real net from Cabelas.
2014 was just as busy on the water as 2013.
Tumblr media
The kids got into boating as we had them fishing, tubing and swimming in the lake.
Tumblr media
On fishing opener in 2014 at Prior Lake, I got my first taste of bed fishing when I plucked Miss Piggy off her spawning bed.  What a thrill.  I fished for this big girl for nearly an hour before she finally opened that big mouth and chomped on my worm.
Tumblr media
It got to the point that we absolutely loved taking the boat to new lakes.  Each one was unique, and more of an experience because each one seemed to involve it’s own adventure.  Here is a list of all 32 bodies of water we’ve had the  Ranger 170VS on:
Crystal Lake (Burnsville, MN)
Marion Lake (Lakeville, MN)
Lake Byllesby (Cannon Falls, MN)
Lake Minnetonka (Wayzata, MN)
Prior Lake (Prior Lake, MN)
Lake O’Dowd (Prior Lake, MN)
Spring Lake (Prior Lake, MN)
St. Croix River
Minnesota River
Mississippi River
Missouri River (Bismark, ND)
Nelson Lake (Center, ND)
Sweet Briar Lake (New Salem, ND)
Lake Auburn (Victoria, MN)
Balsam Lake (Balsam Lake, WI)
Lake Pepin (Lake City, MN)
Orchard Lake (Lakeville, MN)
Lake Mille Lacs (Onomia, MN)
Cedar Lake (Aitkin, MN)
Cedar Lake (New Prague, MN)
Lake Mazaska (Faribault, MN)
Shields Lake (Faribault, MN)
Cedar Lake (Faribault, MN)
Sakatah Lake (Waterville, MN)
Tetonka Lake (Waterville, MN)
Lake Jefferson (Cleveland, MN)
Lake of the Ozarks (Eldon, MO)
Lake Okoboji (Arnold’s Park, IA)
Mike Minnewashta (Arnold’s Park, IA)
Lower Gar Lake (Arnold’s Park, IA)
South Lindstrom Lake (Lindstrom, MN)
Chisago Lake (Lindstrom, MN)
Probably my favorite adventure ever on the Ranger was in August of 2014.  Dyan and I took a 101 mile, 9 hour round trip excursion from Eagan to the Afton  via three waterways - the Minnesota River to the Mississippi River to the St. Croix River.
Tumblr media
The experience took us underneath the flightpath of MSP, gave us a picturview window of downtown St. Paul and showed us real quick how out of our element we were when we had to navigate Lock & Dam #2, in Hastings, MN.
Tumblr media
By 2016, the Ranger was starting to push past her prime.  I (who are we kidding? The marina) had to start doing more than just preventative maintenance.  I had just had knee surgery in the spring of 2016.  I was antsy to get out of the house after being cooped up rehabilitating.  I talked Dyan into braving the strong currents of the Mississippi River with me.
Tumblr media
We fished all day avoiding catastrophe (due to the current and me almost falling in the river because of my bum knee) on a couple of occasions. While on the river, I had an unfortunate run-in with a gigantic submerged tree and the trolling motor.  Let’s just say, that was the beginning of the end for that motor.
Later on that summer, Aaron and I had to forfeit a tournament due to the trolling motor and battery issues.  Over the next week I watched youtube videos on fixing the cable drive of the MotorGuide, which temporarily worked.  Just long enough for me to catch this giant 5.27lb bass on Lake Marion.  My personal best to date.
Tumblr media
But the trolling motor continued to give me fits the rest of the summer.
By 2017, we had much bigger issues than the trolling motor.  On our way to the Ozarks, we nearly lost a trailer wheel when the bearing overheated due to some heavy duty braided fishing line that somehow worked its way into the bearings.
Tumblr media
This incident caused me to do an entire refurbishment of the the trailer prior to the 2018 season.   I (the marina) put on new bearings, hubs, tires, as well as updated the trailer with full LED lights.  While in the shop, the motor had an issue with the fuel float.  I won't pretend to know what it was, but it was sure expensive to diagnose and repair.
Also in 2018, I finally got fed up and replaced the trolling motor.  The days of not knowing which direction the boat was going to go when giving the trolling motor some juice were finally behind me.  And the money pit continued as soon as Aaron and I got the boat on the water for the first time and realized the cranking battery was dead.  By May of 2018, I had spent more money YTD on the Ranger than I had in all the years combined since 2013.
And 2019 started off with more fixes.  This time, I spent nearly $300 having the shop diagnose what was thought to be a bad fuel filter or faulty fuel pump.  Neither were the correct diagnosis.  The issue ended up being cheap spark plugs.
The Ranger is a great boat and has been almost like a companion to me over the years.  She was always ready to hit the water as soon as I said, “Let’s go!”  This blog would not exist if I never would have bought her.  The original premise of this blog was to document my experiences on the water in that little boat.  Obviously, this blog has come a long way since then, but the Ranger deserves the credit for encouraging me to write!
But now, she’s getting older and doesn’t fit our growing family.  In the past two years, we have not gone out as a family of 7 because the boat just isn't big enough for us.
Tumblr media
Although we made it work when the kids were younger, I am not sure that boat ever was big enough for all of us.  Hell, I am not sure there is a boat in existence that is big enough for all of us!  But we didn’t let the size deter us from having some memorable trips to the lake.

And that brings us to where we are today.  Given the problems I had been having with the Ranger, I was ready to sell.  I had contacted a couple of local marinas and they were willing to give me between $9,000 and $11,000 if I traded it in on a new boat.  Not too bad of a value considering I paid $16,000 for it, and owned it for 7 years.  So I decided to list it on Facebook Marketplace for $17,000.  I knew I was way overvaluing it, but hey, it gave me room to negotiate.  I was hoping to get $12-13K.
The boat was listed for 5 days. In that time, I had 12 people make serious inquiries, with 3 setting up appointments to test drive it.  I must admit, I was a bit relieved.  Relieved in that despite the issues I had with the boat people were still interested in this 10 year old vessel.
Then a guy named Greg messaged me.  He was very interested in the boat.  From the moment Greg reached out to me, he was hook, line and sinker.  Greg even went as far as telling me to cancel the test drive appointments because he was planning to bring COLD HARD CASH when he stopped by to buy it.  There are some flakey buyers out there in cyber space, so I tried my best to not get my hopes up.  I was anticipating Greg to go silent at some point and never to be heard from again.  But that wasn't the case.  For 3 straight days Greg messaged me over and over asking questions about the boat.  I felt like many of my responses to home were disappointing such as, “No Greg, the trolling motor is not linked the the Humminbirds.”  “No Greg, the trolling motor is not Minn Kota.”  “No Greg, the rod box doesn’t fit a rod over 7′.”  I felt like all my responses were going to deter Greg from buying the boat, but every time his counter was, “I can work with that.”

As it turned out, Greg was a real guy and not just some cyber punk wasting my time.  Greg showed up at my house and looked the boat over before signing paperwork that transferred the title over to him.  And the craziest part about it, he really did bring $17,000 in cold, hard, cash.  Fat stacks of $100 dollar bills!
It was a surreal moment.  The boat was no longer mine.  However, I just received $1,000 more for the Ranger than what I originally paid for it!  How is that possible?  Quite the return on my investment!
Despite the great deal I had just made on the boat, it was painful to watch my baby pull out of the driveway destined for a new home.  I watched the Ranger head down the street, knowing I’d never see her again.  Only when those brand new LED tail lights were out of sight did I finally head inside.  I was no longer a boat owner.  But, I now had some discretionary money burning a hole in my pocket...  What shall we buy Dyan?

My name is Briar Rose McCutcheon and I was born the day the bombs fell in Vault 76. My mother was a West Virginia Park Ranger, and an expert in Ecology which is why Vault-Tec found her valuable enough to place in Vault 76. My father died in a mining accident a few months before my birth. She taught me everything she knew while I was growing up in the vault, she was always so excited for Reclamation Day. Sadly, my mother was one of the ones to die before Reclamation Day arrived. So here I am, October 2102, out in the world with hand-me-down Park Ranger credentials, surviving what’s left of the state my mother loved so much. It’s beautiful even with the mutated flora and fauna.
