I will never stop wondering how things could have been if, during Endgame's group therapy scene (and with Steve's character beyond, but that's a different post), Marvel Studios actually showed they cared about the characters and queer fans by having the guts to make an actual ground-breaking choice and play footage of Bucky's "Deaths" (Falling/Dusting) over Steve saying, "I lost the love of my life," and trying (and failing) to convince people he's moved on and so should they.

It would have made infinitely more sense; it would have been organic, and it would have had a much stronger emotional impact, why? Because we love these characters and their story. Instead, we got months of the Russos constantly lying to queer fans about the scope of their promised "openly gay main character", then reducing said character to a nameless and forgettable director-insert who only speaks a few lines in a single scene that is easily cut and to stab the knife in further; destroyed Steve and Bucky's arcs.

Steve Rogers leads a peaceful life in rural Montana, homeschooling his daughter Mackenzie and tending to their horses. That is, until a riding accident upends their lives, leaving Steve with a traumatized and heartbroken eight-year-old and a fidgety American Paint, Sunflower. 

Enter Bucky Barnes, a renowned horse whisperer all the way up from the mountains; young but somehow wise beyond his years, with an air of melancholy gentleness about him. 

True to his reputation, Bucky’s way with horses is nothing short of magical, and over the coming weeks he works tirelessly with Sunflower, slowly but steadily earning his trust. What’s more, as Bucky’s soft voice and softer hands coax the horse into lowering his guard, it eventually seems to draw Mackenzie out of her shell, too.  

Steve tries his best to ignore the way his chest tightens at realizing Bucky isn’t just great with horses and kids — he’s great with Steve’s kid. 

Still, as weeks become months, the trees starting to turn and September washing the hills in slow, honeyed light, Steve finds something long-forgotten stirring in his marrow under these wide, western skies.
