Hey! Not sure if you take asks or not, but do you have any advice for a baby witch?
YES! First, asks are always open, and I appreciate you sending one! Secondly, of course I have some advice! Let's get into it!
(1) Decolonize your craft
Decolonizing your craft is essential to witchcraft. Making sure you don't take part in practices that are closed to you, and making sure that you don't use tools/methods/items that are sacred to cultures you aren't a part of is SO IMPORTANT!!! This is where I would recommend you to start your research. Here is an excellent article on what a closed practice is, but it doesn't go too deep into specific things that are closed. I think it's a good jumping off point.
Along with respecting and educating yourself on closed practices, knowing where your information is from and what biases that information may have (good or bad) is also important. This goes along with what materials you use and where they come from (is this ethically sourced, is this a closed item, who profits off of this item, etc.).
(2) RESEARCH A TON!!!
If you're on this blog, asking this question, you're doing this! Good job! If you search "BOS" on my blog, or click -> here , you can go to my "book of shadows" tag, and see lists of ways to start your own book of shadows (aka a ton of things to research and write down)
(3) Write everything down
Going along with that last sentence, write. stuff. down! Your craft will change and grow, and even if you're just writing what you learn in your phones notes app, you will be so happy that you have that later on. It's great to see where you came from and how far you've come, and who knows, you may need that one sigil you made 3 months ago, or maybe that random spell you wrote down ages ago is exactly what you need in your current situation. Just write things down, you'll thank yourself for it later.
(4) Don't feel like you need to fit into a box
This one is very important as well! Social media witches and pretty instagram witchcraft isn't how your craft is most likely not how your practice will look, especially not when starting out. Don't force yourself to have the most perfect altar, with allllll of these beautiful, expensive tools, and all the witchy clothes and decorations, etc. etc. etc. You honestly don't need anything but your intention to do witchcraft. Don't worry about having an "aesthetic" practice. It really isn't realistic for most people.
Also, witch "types" aren't set in stone. You don't only have to be a Green Witch, or only a Hearth Witch, or only a Sea Witch. These are just fun categories, and you don't need to commit to one or the other. I consider them mostly just tags that witches use to see the kinds of content they want to see, or to categorise themselves so others know their favorite things in their practice. If you NEED a label, but can't decide, "eclectic" is an easy thing to slap onto your practice that is all encompassing while still being labeled.
These are my biggest advice points. If anyone wants more, I'm sure I can think of more, I just wanted to get this out because I was excited to get an ask, haha.
Anyways, happy witching!

Unpopular Opinion Time
The doodle you make or the picrew you use, the poorly executed poetry or basic bare bones prayer will ALWAYS be better than AI generated offerings.
I am sick of having my feed flooded with practitioners, pagans and other polytheists using AI. Specifically deities like Brigid should never be offered AI in my opinion, it’s essentially a slap in the face.
AI generated spells aren’t shit, it’s what a computer assumes will work based off of what it can gather from internet trends and research. MAKE IT YOURSELF, ask a human for help anything but AI.
There is no place for Artificial Intelligence in these spaces.

REVIEW: Backwoods Witchcraft by Jake Richards
Tumblr media
I feel like Jake Richards's books are pretty popular with folk witches. If you have any interest in Appalachian folk magic, or even American folk magic more generally, you've probably at least heard of this book. Part of why I put off reviewing it for so long is because I feel like there's already been plenty of attention given to it online, so I'll try to make this brief.
Pros:
Definitely authentic Appalachian folk magic. Jake Richards writes about a lot of things I've seen people do or heard people talk about but never seen written anywhere.
This book is really well researched! I'm very impressed by all the references and footnotes.
I love that Richards uses the correct Tsalagi (Cherokee), Gaelige (Irish), and Gaelic (Scottish) words when talking about the cultures that influence Southern folk magic. I also love that he includes pronunciation guides.
Cons:
I didn't finish this book on my first read. It wasn't until I revisited it recently that I actually read to the end. Something about the writing style and the way the book is organized made it a little hard to follow at times, at least for me.
The research is generally good, but there's definitely more detail given for European and Cherokee cultural influences than for African. When talking about European influences, Richards will usually specify the specific country or culture something comes from, but for African influences he just says "African." While this research is harder to do because the slave trade intentionally cut people off from their cultural traditions, other authors like Luisah Teish and Stephanie Rose Bird have shown that we can often trace these African influences back to a specific culture, or at least a region. I would have liked to see the same level of effort put into researching African practices that went into the European ones.
Other Observations:
Christianity is a big part of the author's practice. This is faithful to traditional Appalachian conjure, but just know that it may be triggering if you've experienced religious trauma in a Christian setting. I found this book harder to read than other books on conjure that incorporate Christian elements, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because it sounded too similar to the Appalachian church where my abuse happened? Just something to be aware of if this is a tricky topic for you.
Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

For my disabled selfshippers, whether that be mentally or physically, your f/o loves you.
Even on your bad days.
Even when you're in so much pain all you want to do is scream and cry.
Even when you forget important things, or make mistakes.
Even when you keep them up all night with your night terrors, or wake them up to help you with your meds because you can't get it yourself.
Even when you can't get yourself out of bed and sleep for most of the day.
They love you when you talk too loud and when you can't talk at all.
They love you when you infodump about random things they don't have a clue about.
They love you when you're stimming really badly, or screaming uncontrollably, and when you're trashing around from a seizure or meltdown.
They love you, even when you hate yourself. Even when you can't see why they love you, they still do.
You don't have to be perfect for them to love you, you don't have to be good, you don't even have to be okay!
They don't love you only for your good days, they love you for you. And you is messy, you is weak, you is scared, and you is angry, and they love that about you!
You're not their burden.
You're not someone they're forced to babysit.
You're not a headache.
You're their heart.
You're who loves them the most.
You're the best thing that's ever happened to them.
You love them, even if no one else does, you love them. You see the good in them. You see them for what they are, and they aren't perfect.
The same fear that you have, that you're too much or too little for them? They have it too.
They worry they're not enough for you too.
But they believe in your love for them. They believe you when you tell them how much you love them. So please, for their sake, believe them when they tell you they love you, because even if they've never told the truth before, how much they love you could never be a lie.

You do witchcraft???
That's so cool! I had no idea there were other witches in the TMNT fandom!!!
What kind of witchcraft do you practice?? Personally, I deal mostly with divination, but I'd love to hear more about other people's crafts!
I do! ^^ Though admittedly my practice has been a little bit dormant as of late because I sort of fell out of habit after An Event which was a Bit Disruptive to My Life lol. But I guess I kind of dabble in a bit of everything? I dunno if I could pin myself down to just one kind of practice yet, I still sort of consider myself a Baby Witch. But I really like making little spelljars and casting candle spells and things of the like, and I've been trying to learn tarot for a while now! I also really like making and drawing sigils... For a while part of the joy for me has been just Learning New Things.

Whew look at you go! Had a small problem with aphids a lil while back, but after a whole lot of diligence they were banished. Still have some of the damaged leaves visible but look at all the healthy new growth!
You may be trying to take over my desk, but I couldn’t ask for a better art companion. The moss in the planter is happy with the frequent watering and shade, but the impatiens is trying to devoir the terrarium moss now too
My oxalis is thriving still, too. But it has its own space above me and isn’t trying to reach out and say hello as much.
Okay, this has been your semi annual habitat update. Back to painting.
Also, hello new followers! Thank you for liking my art.

Hi!
So I'm a (minor) young witch and I want to learn how to get into hellenism. I'm looking to pray to Aphrodite, Ares, and Dionysus particularly, but also Hestia, Thanatos, and Hera!
I kinda want to be discreet about it, because my mom is very Christian lol.
Thank you for the help!
- Anon Ziggy
Hello! I like your little Anon tag, that's kinda cool! This post will be broken into two parts, the first is about Hellenism and how to get into it, and the second part about broom closet witchcraft.
==-🏺HOW TO GET INTO HELLENISM🏺-==
--=-==-=--What is Hellenic Polytheism?--=-==-=--
Hellenic Polytheism is the modern recreation of Hellenism, the ancient Greek religion. It is an open pantheon/practice, and anyone can get into it.
Hellenic Polytheism is a partially animistic religion, believing in nature spirits and treating all things with respect, including plants and inanimate things found in nature (rocks, the wind, water, etc.). The Hellenic Pantheon is made up of these nature spirits, the Twelve Olympians (link), the cthonic deities, and the lesser gods.
I recommend looking at this webpage to learn about traditional Greek religion. Keep in mind that while it's 100% okay to not do things exactly as they were done in the past, it is important to keep things in mind the cultural context and history of Hellenic Polytheism.
--=-==-=--How do I start?--=-==-=--
"Step one" on becoming a Hellenic Polytheist is to decide how you want to go about worship. Do you want to worship Greek deities, or do you want to work with them (link , link)? What is your view on cleansing yourself before interacting with the gods? Do you want to work with every god and deity from the Greek pantheon, or just a select few? Figuring these things out will give you a place to start.
As I mentioned above, some people decide to cleanse themselves before interacting with the gods. It isn't necessary, but it is a huge sign of respect. You can go about this the traditional way, by making khernips (link), or just by washing your hands and face.
The next big step would be to research the deities you want to work with. Find out what appropriate offerings are (like bay leaves for Apollon), their mythology, festivals for them (Aphrodisia for Aphrodite), associations with them (mint and Hades), and any customs that are common with them (honoring Hestia first and last).
I would also learn or at least read their traditional hymns and media (poems, plays, etc.) created for them. You can even make some for them yourself!
As for praying, here is a great video on praying in Hellenism, here is a great video on altars, and here is a good one on offerings.
--=-==-=--🤫 Secret Witch Tips 🤫--=-==-=--
This post is already a million words long, so we're going to rapid fire some broom closet witch tips.
Travel altars! These can be made in an Altoids tin, a small box, a shoe box, or anything else! Let me know if you need ideas on small things to go into a travel/mini/hidden altar.
Digital worship! Check out this post on virtual worship
Subtle witchcraft. Can be done through glamour magic, art magic, kitchen witchery, affirmations, taking care of nature, or any other small form of magic that makes you feel centered, connected to the earth and universe around you, or honors your guides and deities.
Get plants! Taking care of plants is a great witchy thing to do, and you can dedicate a plant to a deity and take care of the plant as an offering to them
Get e-books, read articles, watch videos, and listen to podcasts on witchcraft.

Bakugou is getting this strange look on his face after you pulled crystals from your drawer when he asked you about protection
OMGGGG YESSS he’d definitely be skeptical at first.
i’ve always imagined different scenarios of how he finds out you’re into witchcraft and you’ve just added more to the brain rot.
imagine sitting down in your bedroom and you’re both going over safety measures in case something were to happen while you’re apart and he mentions different ways of protection like the buildings to go to, a safe place to meet in case of emergencies etc.
and you suddenly rise from your spot next to him and walk towards your dresser. rummaging through the drawer that has all your witchy supplies and then picking through the small shiny rocks he’s noticed inside the cute shaped glass bowl on top of the dresser.
sitting back down next to him and handing him the crystals. looking at you like you just grew two heads because why are you giving him a black rugged rock and a tiny jar filled with even tinier clear rocks that he feels that if he’s not careful he’ll break it with his strong hands.
chuckling at his expression before you explain that the rock it’s called black tourmaline and the jar has small clear quartz. asking what they’re for because he is both confused but very curious since he’s noticed the small mesh bag you have in your purse with similar rocks and his mom has bracelets with rocks almost identical to some of the ones on top of your dresser.
explaining to him what they are for while he listens to you as he begins to understand why you’re giving them to him. trying to hide his small smile when you say that it will also make you feel better if he has them since you put your energy into them so now he’ll always have a piece of you with him, protecting him while he’s out on patrol.
although he does shoot you a yeah, sure look when you add that it will also help to lift up some of the negativity around his work area, knowing that his team is on his ass everyday complaining about some new thing he did that could affect his image on top of the heavy workload he has.
but he’s laughing dumbfounded to himself two weeks later when he notices that ever since bringing the crystals to work with him all of a sudden the reports he was stuck on now seem more clear and easier to finish, his team hasn’t been nagging him as much and he feels like the air around his office has lifted a bit.
