Daily Blog July 2, 2023

So I'm mad at my beta! We were chatting back and forth on Discord originally about my WIP fic I'm writing. Yes, the one were I wrote the first 7 chapters back in 2007 before HPDH was released. Anyway, the fic will have 4 parts, and part 1 is the original. I asked her to beta the older chapters so they would be ready to go. Ummmm, she mentioned the whole premise of the fic, was making her anxious. So I stopped her from doing anymore and said no worries. Betaing should not cause stress. Okay we'll get back to me needing a beta at the end of the blog today.

But this is not why I'm mad at her. No.... she mentioned she's writing for @hd-fan-fair this year and did I take a look at the prompts. I said absolutely not because I always get sucked in. So we chatted some more and she said oh just take a look and tell me which one you would write for if you were participating this year.

You see where this is going don't you... Since my muse is on fire these days. I spotted a prompt and boom, full shorter story popped into my head. The final lines and everything. So, yes, I've joined the fest and I blame my beta! Actually, I love @myaulophobia dearly.

What I'm reading:

Yesterday I said I would be reading the first posted story for @hd-wireless. Um, that will be tonight. Because I was just taking a look at my Tumblr feed when @drarryspecificrecs posted the longest Drarry fics for June. Bam! So I read Tandem (92K) by fast-brother (AO3). Who is also another NEW author. OMG where are they coming from? We are so blessed in Drarry. This story, this story I read until I fell asleep last night and woke up early on this Sunday morning to finish it.

Here's the summary: Harry and Draco meet by accident six years after the war. Harry's an Auror with a drinking problem and Draco's a broke student. Things don't work out well. Six years after that, Draco joins the British Auror Office as a Potioneer.

Here's a little more from me: Draco was sentenced to 15 years probation of No Magic and all vaults and Manor confiscated. Lucius and Narcissa were sentenced to Azkaban. The Ministry was a mess during the trials and the Ministry is still in a mess. Ron is Head Auror (love this!) and Harry is also a mess. Great Auror, but drinks too much, has sex too much, and works to hard to push down those hard to deal with feelings.

The story is written from alternating POV, which is quite nice and helpful in understanding the place where both of them are coming from...not a good place originally. The story starts with the meeting after the first 6 years, which is rough. Then Draco moves on, marries, and makes something of his life as Potioneer in France. However, he has no magic so he's learned to do things for himself instead of relying on others' magic to help him. Draco is hired with insistence of one Ron Weasley to come back and work for the Aurors as their UK DMLE Potioneer. Then sparks start to fly...

This fic has one of the best relationships between Ron and Draco that I've read. Hermione too, but mainly R & D. They all love Harry, but...... And Harry, oh I love this Harry despite his being an arse in so much of it. However, he has his story and his telling of what happened in the Forest is unforgettable. And you, too, will fall back in love with our Harry.

There are so many scenes that are memorable but I'm not going to say anymore. You need to read this fic and give one of our New Drarry authors love.

Let me state up front that I do have an Alpha, the wonderous and amazing @m0srael. What I'm looking for is a strong SPAG beta and if you can spot inconsistencies and/or canon issues, even better. I'm an engineer by trade and cannot tell you the last time I took an English/grammar class. I'm terrible with my commas! As my beta was also my Britpicker... I might need one of those later on.

Fairy Tales: Lena finally has the work and home life balance that she wants and is excited to get to spend the next two weeks that she has off with the girls while Kara is away. She believes that it will be smooth sailing, but things are not as they seem.

Something Wicked This Way Comes: The Superkids are participating in a decathlon, but unusual series of events start to happen. This is a part of the 1k word challenge. I got the word smoke. This is in the same world as my series My Everything. Alexa, Liza, Billy, and Zatanna are a couple of years older. You can read this independently of the series. An Unexpected Journey: Lena is going on a forced vacation with her best friend Sam and her daughter Ruby. However, things don't go exactly as planned when they reached their destination. This is definitely a long time coming, but I finally wrote a text only fic for Sterek, complete with a stylized AND plain text view for reading! Also my first long fic that I've written since...I don't even know when (aka it's NOT a drabble or ficlet!!). This is also belated from July, but for reasons you can read more about below the cut. Inspired by @yearoftheotpevent's July prompt "stars," as well as sniperjade's Masturbation Midsummer Bingo 2023, using the square "I can't anymore," and Summer of Cum 2023 prompts "creampie," "come marking," "precome," "come swallowing," "coming untouched," and "coming in pants" (yeah, there's definitely a spicy theme here :P).

Some of my lovely Sterek friends know I've been dabbling in and out of writing text fics since last year (2022). Easier said than done 1000%, I'm going to tell you that right now. It only took me 3 tries to get it right! (And yes, it means my other 2 WIPs need to be reworked, le sigh.) It's one thing to write a text fic, but it's a completely different beast to style the damned thing with AO3 skins while making it as legible and accessible as possible. I thankfully know how to code in CSS and HTML, but it took me quite a long time to create a custom skin template that I liked and could reuse while getting the look and feel just right for our idiotic boys and the overall Teen Wolf world. Texting and sexting is legit an art. There are so many ways to approach how to write a text because each person does that differently. There's also intention required when using emojis, figuring out how someone would react to things, and hell, even playing around with timestamps and timezones is important. A text fic isn't just about words. All the tiny details add up and make a new experience. I think I took a full week to QA this whole fic because I wanted the aesthetic to look good, and it was worth it! It was nice to make something for myself, which let me write dialogue and banter and a lot of fun things I normally wouldn't had this been a different kind of fic. Super grateful for having a Write-A-Thon sprint weekend, which motivated me to finish the bulk of this baby up. And when I think about it now, this labor of love was originally supposed to be an experiment for me to play around and learn more about coding intricacies. It was supposed to be a short Porn without Plot thingie (but uhhh, it's definitely Porn with Plot and Feelings because that's the way it is). 1-2k words somehow became 8k+ words. No regrets though. It has been a long time since I've felt good about writing something this long and doing something different than the norm. It has been such a blast coming up with all the texts in this fic, because they're humorous and spicy with the usual banter and sarcasm we love between Derek and Stiles. But hey, there's some romantic angst too (they might be texting and using words, but they could do better, of course). Anyway, I hope you give this a read when you have a chance. Enjoy!

Welcome to the First Wizarding War Fest!

This is an anonymous, prompt-based fest for fic and art featuring the First Wizarding War as significant to the work.

The setting of the fanwork can be anytime before October 31, 1981. It must be about the First Wizarding War in some way. This is your chance to explore topics such as factors that led to the war; characters fighting in the war; or how the war shaped society.

We would love to see works that explore how Voldemort came to power; how Severus and his friends became Death Eaters; or what shenanigans the Marauders came up with during their first battle.

We also welcome AUs that still focus on the first war. What if Harry time-traveled back to 1950? Would he stop Voldemort or fall in love with him? What if Harry time-traveled back to 1979 and helped Regulus find the locket? Hell, what if Lily Evans turned dark and teamed up with Bellatrix to take over Britain? The options are endless!

All works will be hosted on Ao3, so you must have an Ao3 account to participate. Your work must comply with Ao3 terms of service. The mods will ensure that all works comply with the terms of service but will not otherwise make changes to art, text, or tags. The mods reserve the right to make other judgment calls on an as-needed basis to refuse a piece.

Canon compliant, time travel, and AU (canon divergence) fics are welcome. We also allow crossovers as long as they take place in the Harry Potter universe during the first wizarding war. Alternate settings such as coffee-shop AUs, or crossovers taking place in a different fandom's property, are not eligible. Ineligible topics would be, for example: the Marauders as students simply because the timeline is during the first war. For example, an eligible prompt would be about James, Sirius, Peter, and Remus deciding to join the Order of the Phoenix. An ineligible prompt would be the four of them pranking Slytherins in the Great Hall at breakfast. The mods reserve the right to delete prompts that do not appear to be about the First Wizarding War.

This fest is inclusive of many themes you personally may dislike. We will not tolerate bashing of ships or characters, or kink shaming. Please adhere to "don't like; don't read."

Artist Guidelines

Each art submission must be a stand-alone piece and exclusive to this fest.

Each submission must demonstrate approximately 2 hours worth of effort. Although this is an anon fest, you are welcome to include your personal watermark on the piece when it is uploaded to AO3 to prevent theft.

In addition to compliance with Ao3's terms of service, please do not submit explicit artwork depicting minors.

Author Guidelines

Each written submission must be a stand-alone piece and exclusive to this fest.

All written stories must be a minimum of 1,000 words with no maximum word count.

We strongly encourage that fics be beta read. The mods are more than happy to help find you a beta. Participants can also indicate if they are willing to beta for other participants in the sign up form.

Prompts

You will use airtable to submit your prompts; the link will be available when prompting opens. You may submit up to 20 prompts, as long as they fit the parameters of the fest.

All accepted prompts will be available to view on the airtable gallery (the link will be available when prompting opens). Anyone can submit a prompt; you will not be required to submit a claim in order to submit a prompt and vice versa.

You may submit prompts anonymously. By submitting a prompt under your ao3 name, you agree to receive either fic or art.

Claims

After prompting is over, there will be another airtable link to submit your claims.

Prompts are claimed on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive an email confirming your prompt and your signup. If you finish writing your fic and wish to claim a second prompt, you are welcome to do so even after claiming closes. Before submitting a second claim form, please submit your first finished piece to the AO3 collection and wait for approval to claim another prompt.

Each prompt will be allowed 1 claim in each medium - Fic and Artwork.

You may, but are not required to, gift the work to the prompter. If you do not follow the prompt closely or do not adhere to the Do Not Want’s, consider self-prompting instead. If you would prefer not to have a fic gifted to you, consider prompting anonymously.

We also encourage you to participate in the fest community by leaving kudos and a kind comment on other participants' works!

Self Prompts

You can self-prompt on the claiming form after the prompting period ends. The mods will email you to either approve your prompt or let you know that it does not meet the criteria for the fest.

Drop Outs and Extensions

If you need to drop out at any time or request an extension, please contact the mods. Extensions will be at the mods’ discretion and dependent on the size of the fest. If you drop out without telling us, you will not be eligible to participate in next year’s fest.

Submissions and Posting

All artwork and written stories must be posted on AO3 to the First Wizarding War Fest collection by the deadline. You will not need to add the fest mod account as a co-author; we will inform you of the reveal date for your fic prior to posting, and you may change the publication date on the fic if you would like. However, if you would prefer us to update the date when we post, you may add the mod account (FirstWizardingWarFestMod). We will not make any other changes to your work.

When you post your work to the collection, also email us the following information:

I do not allow my work to be stolen. Even if it may not be 'good' or professional, I came up with the writing elements and spent hours of my time writing, typing, editing, and polishing

I also do not steal other people's works. I have done my best to give credit where I have been directly inspired. If you think one of my works is plagiarizing someone else's (or vice versa), let me know and I'll do my best to resolve the issue

For this reason, among others, I have included dates in my Master Masterlist and have dates enabled on tumblr. Also, there are a lot of repeated tropes in this fandom, so it's hard to write completely new content without reusing some elements of others' stories. I’ve done my best to use my own ideas and put my own spin on the tropes without copying others’ works.

A ripped bodice with a binder underneath? Yes, please!

You always wanted to illustrate an existing fic in romance novel style? Here is your chance! Collaborate and create a steamy romance and a swoon worthy cover? Embroider your romantic ideas! You know the perfect romantic fic and want to record it? Yes yes yes!

All fics must be proofread. Podfics should have been proofed before submitting. (If you are unable to find a beta, please let us know.)

They’re proposing a $2 billion contest to return Americans to the moon — far less than the expected cost of NASA’s planned lunar project.

Newt Gingrich and an eclectic band of NASA skeptics are trying sell President Donald Trump on a reality show-style plan to jump-start the return of humans to the moon — at a fraction of the space agency’s estimated price tag.

The proposal, whose other proponents range from a three-star Air Force general to the former publicist for pop stars Michael Jackson and Prince, envisions creating a $2 billion sweepstakes pittingbillionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and other space pioneers to see who can establish and runthe first lunar base,according to a summary of the plan shared with POLITICO.

That’s far less taxpayer money than NASA’s anticipated lunar plan, which relies on traditional space contractors such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin and is projected to cost $50 billion or more.

Backers of the novel approach have briefed administration officials serving on the White House National Space Council, several members of the group confirmed, though they declined to provide specifics of the internal conversations.

Trump has yet to weigh in on the idea, at least publicly. But the proposal, designed to offer a big incentive for private players who are already planning their own moon missions, comes while the president has expressed skepticism that NASA can achieve his goal of returning American astronauts to the moon by 2024 without bold departures from the status quo.

Gingrich maintains that space entrepreneurs like Musk and Bezos can rise to the challenge. And some of the companies told POLITICO they are intrigued by the idea of such a competition.

“I think people would be shocked how fast they can move,” the former speaker said in an interview.

Advocates for the lower-cost backup plan insist that NASA’s current approach is not reliable enough to ensure that America retains its lead against new space competitors like China, which they say is aggressively laying the groundwork to establish a sustained presence on the moon to tap into its vast energy, mineral and other resources.

“Right now, China is on a path to [have a moon settlement] in 20 years and we are on a path to be there in 50 years,” Air Force Lt. Gen. Steve Kwast, a co-author of the plan, said in an interview.“We are not aggressive about it, we have the wrong strategy, the wrong ideas, the wrong doctrine. We are trapped in an industrial age model of thinking about space.”

White House spokesperson Will Boyington declined to discuss any interactions involving the proposal. He deferred questions to NASA, which said it has not yet received such a proposal.

“At NASA we look forward to working with new partners as we focus on executing[Trump’s] Space Policy Directive 1, which instructs the agency to return American astronauts to the moon and pursue human exploration of Mars and the broader solar system,” Bettina Inclán, the associate administrator, told POLITICO in an email. “NASA is implementing this plan through the Artemis program which will send the first woman and next man to the lunar surface by 2024.”

Trump set the 2024 deadline this year as part of an ambitious vision to create a permanent moon settlement that would serve as the staging ground for a journey to Mars.

But he has also questioned NASA’s ability to meet the timeline, and last month heimplored Administrator Jim Bridenstine to consider alternatives from others in the space community who are wary of the current plan. That fits a pattern in which Trump has taken an abiding interest in lowering the costs of other aerospace programs, including the new Air Force One and the F-35 fighter jet.

NASA’s lunar plans rely on a rocket called the Space Launch Systemthat is being developed by Boeing, as well as the Orion space capsule being built by Lockheed Martin. Both projects have been dogged by delays and billions in cost overruns, imperiling NASA’s moon plans, according to the Government Accountability Office. NASA is spending roughly $2 billion per year on the Space Launch System program alone.

The agency’s vision for a permanent human presence on the moon also includes an orbiting lunar space station, known as the Gateway, that some critics call unproven, unnecessary and overly expensive.

One skeptic of the space agency’s approach in recent years has been Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who put Bridenstine on the spot last month during an Oval Office commemoration of the July 1969 moon landing. Aldrin, the second man to walk on the lunar surface, expressed “great disappointment” in NASA’s recent efforts to return to the moon.

That prompted Trump to turn to his NASA chief and instruct him to “also listen to the other side.”

“Because some people would like to do it a different way,”the president told Bridenstine. “So you’ll listen to Buzz and some of the other people. …I know this has been going on for a little while, and we’re so advanced, but I would like to hear the other side also.”

The “other side” in this case is an unusual collection of personalities — an “eclectic space brain trust,” as described by Greg Autry, who served on Trump’s NASA transition team in 2017 and has also been pushing theidea.

Gen. Kwast, who is set to retire this fall, recently led the Air Education and Training Command, where he clashed with Air Force leaders over his outspoken views about what he considersthe administration’s overly narrow model for the proposed Space Force, which he believes must be structured to help industrialize space to benefit humans on Earth, not just militarize it.

The moon competitionidea was hatched in Mayunder his leadership at the Air Force’s Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base.

Its architects also include several advisers to NASA as well as former Rep. Bob Walker, a Pennsylvania Republican who chaired the House Science Committee in the 1990s. And another leading force is Howard Bloom, a1960s counterculture figure who went on to be a leading music industry publicist,launching rock bands like KISS and AC/DC and promoted Bob Marley and Billy Joel.

Bloom, who describes himself as the “philosopher at the end of the universe,” has also written books on Islam and human evolution. His labyrinthine public career took a different turn in 2005 when he founded the Space Development Steering Committee, a loose network of advocates for the burgeoning commercial space industry that has counted Aldrin as one of its leading boosters.

He has since become a booster of Musk, Bezos and other space entrepreneurs — and an outspoken critic of the management of some major NASA programs. Bloom has said the Space Launch System, Orion and Gateway programs “have amputated America’s ability to launch Americans to orbit on American vehicles.”

He told POLITICO he hopes some of the moon mission will be “handed over to a new set of players — players who don’t operate in the delay-forever-to-maintain-cash flow manner of the SMIC,” an acronym he coined for what he calls the “space-military industrial complex.”

The proposal for a moon competition sketches out what it describes asa simpler, more cost-effective way to achieve Trump’s goals while capturing the imagination of the public.

It would “offer a billion dollars to the first company or organization that can land a roomy, comfortable human base on the moon and offer a billion dollars to the company that can set up and run that base,” according to the plan’ssummary.

“In the past, putting permanent housing on the moon has been estimated to cost between $50 billion and $500 billion,” the proposal adds. “But several private companies have developed moon programs on their own dime. So we are now in a position to buy transportation and housing from private American companies. At an unbelievable drop in cost.”

Potential contestants in the competition to build a settlement on the moon, according to the plan, include the Blue Moon lander vehicle being built by Bezos’ Blue Origin; the 100-passenger Starship being developed by Musk’s SpaceX; and the conceptual Xeuslander from United Launch Alliance, a joint venturebetween Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Other possible players: inflatable lunar structures that are being designed and tested by Bigelow Aerospace, founded by Las Vegas hotel mogul Bob Bigelow, and nascent concepts for 3-D printed moon bases put forward by the likes of the European Space Agency.

“Jeff Bezos has said that he can put his Blue Moon landers on the moon by 2023 and could follow shortly thereafter with a human,” said Walker, the former Pennsylvania congressman who is now a space consultant. “The SpaceX people have said publicly that they intend to do a lunar voyage with perhaps paying passengers somewhere in the 2022-2023 timeframe.

“So this is based upon the fact that there are nominally qualified technologies that would be available in that timeframe if NASA can’t deliver,” he added. He said any further delays in Boeing’s Space Launch System would make it “hard to imagine that the SLS could be used for that first moon landing” in 2024.

Walker also cited growing concern “that Congress will not come up with the kind of money that will be necessary to meet the president’s time schedule.”

A basic model for the proposal is the Google Lunar X Prize, a decade-long space competition in which privately funded teams vied to land a robotic spacecraft on the moon that could travel 500 meters and transmit video and images back to Earth.The $30 million contest ended in 2018 with no winner.

The group has held several recent meetings with administration officials, including an early strategy session featuring Gingrich, who has advised the Trump team.

The former speaker has been a leading booster of the space startups, which he says the “Washington contracting-lobbying system” either ignores or “smothers in red tape.”

Said Autry, who now teaches at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California: “We all share a bit of frustration with the traditional linear thinking.”

Gingrich gives Bridenstine credit, though, for getting NASA to tap into the new commercial investment and innovation, including through a series of public-private partnerships to design lunar vehicles.

“The test will come either if the Congress won’t fund [the current moon plan] or NASA just can’t move at that speed,” Gingrich said. “They haven’t gotten to the big decisive moments.”

Several weeks ago, key members of the group also held what Walker described as a “broad-ranging discussion” with members of Trump’s space council about what “the commercial space community believes is the emerging capability to do things they haven’t done in the past.”

Gingrich said he sees Vice President Mike Pence, who chairs the space council, as a key ally. In a speech this yearon the future of thespace program, Pence said that “history is not written by those who stubbornly cling to the status quo.”

“What Pence is sayingto the status quo is, ‘If you can’t deliver the goodies, you ain’t gonna be the status quo,'” Gingrichsaid. “We will find out how deeply he means it. We will find out if the president will back him up on it.”

Some potential competitors in such a moon sweepstakes say they are intrigued by the idea.

Blue Origin declined to comment but a spokesperson for SpaceX pointed out that Musk has publicly backed the idea of such a contest. Musk recently tweeted thatthe “best way” to get to the moon is get commercial space companies to compete for a large prize. “Incent outcome, not path,” he advised.

Blair Bigelow, vice president of corporate strategy at Bigelow Aerospace, said by email that “this idea is interesting, but where will the money come from?”

Pete Garrettson, a retired Air Force officer and space analyst who also helped conceive the plan, said the prize purse is not intended to cover the entire moon program. Instead it is meant tomotivate companies that are already eyeing commercial operations on or around the moon — and push NASA in a new direction.

“It goes to the heart of a culture war in NASA of what its role is supposed to be,” he said in an interview — that is, whether it should remain the primary player in human space operations or, as he and his allies believe, “a convening power where it is not the starring member.”
