#or the passing of the Robin title with Damian

The Boy Wonder #1 by Juni Ba rambling about why every time i open this book, i stare in wonder...HAHA and ofc!! how cute Damian is!!
Tumblr media
Juni Ba’s style is so absurdly effective in telling a fairy tale for the ages. It’s a stunning blend of simplicity and complexity I'M GRIPPING THE PAGES AGAINST MY EYES…
Tumblr media
Before getting into the interiors, THE COVER!! It associates autumn leaves to Damian's Robin title through the iconic cape shape/color; and on top of that, for a Robin going through a big transition in his life...a season of change one might say...Juni Ba your brain...
Damian and the leaves being the only colored parts of this cover is nice in focusing on those elements, but i also like to think by not coloring the background it prepares you to expect impressive inkwork in this book.
On that note, the interiors!! Starting off with Ba's backgrounds of Gotham as it establishes the strange new world that our young hero has been thrust into:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We get a neat tracking shot following a champagne glass that gives us a glimpse of Gotham from the upper echelons to the downtrodden in "Underwell"
This opening sequence quickly lays out the environment Damian will be traveling through in this series! It also sets the tone for some silliness with the cute zoom on the champagne glass before it BOKs the robber lol. Along with Ba's inks, O'Halloran's colors makes every part of Gotham pop - especially love the golds of the higher society shifting into the blues of the underbelly!!
Tumblr media
Besides Damian’s personal conflict, Gotham feels like its own entity that he has to contend with. The dialogue speaks for itself, but within the art as well!!
"This city of ours swallows and crushes everything it can" -> a gargoyle's beak over Damian, crowds of people, and walls of advertising
"You've seen it too...the way it coils around one's mind from below." -> bridges and a passing train on a rail viaduct towering over a civilian
"A dark voice calling as if to say..." -> literally, "FEED ME"
Tumblr media
LOVELY SHOT OF MOVEMENT... and i love how Damian's venture into Gotham opens with him passing a tree - its branches and leaves are the most organic element on the page before getting into the gritty details of the city! Some yammering because the inks are. so cool: the delicate lines of the leaves in the tree to the thicker/bigger lined ones closer to the camera on the right; the background inks allowing space around Damian's form + the fine line of his grapple!! More O'Halloran praise - PRETTY, and love his coloring over Ba's bg lines, particularly here, keeping the leaves darker on the right.
It's not only a pretty page it's just a really clean layout!! Ba exhibits this throughout the book but i really enjoy it here - from Damian nyooming, we head into these last 3 panels. his cute lil "Robin" shape easily draws the eye to the tops of the panels as we take in Gotham's liveliness alongside the lettering/narration
Tumblr media
and the "Robin" shape?? SO CUTE. it's instantly familiar to us as Robin!! bold outline and filled with yellow...it's a Robin in movement!!...AN AUTUMN LEAF IN THE WIND... yeah, still not over that 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Damian's inciting incident is introduced in the former panel with a gorgeous backdrop of Gotham in the distance (plus itty bitty Trinity cameo haha). The shot parallels!! beautifully!! in the final page!! Damian is now in the depths of Gotham, his objective out of reach. The colors are of note too, where the familiar yellows of Gotham are suddenly a startling green after the demon makes its appearance. The Gotham land looks even more unfamiliar, which prompts Damian to seek help.
Some speculation, but the green could also be associated with the more mythical side of demons and such (like the ghost?? of the thief), but it could even imply there's a connection to the Al Ghuls themselves as it's the only other time green is so prominently used.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that the land of Gotham is established, popping in other fav bgs!
Tumblr media
More lovely mix of Ba's inks and O'Halloran's colors!! especially allowing some of the brush/marker strokes to show faintly as part of the twinkling sky...STUNNING!! 😭 i love this whole page but this panel gets me weepy, SMALL DAMIAN IN THE VAST UNIVERSE COMBINED WITH THIS LINE "He knew he could be great. How unfair of the world to make him feel so small." KICKS MY ASS... i need to lie down
Tumblr media
YAPPING AT MORE WONDERFUL INKING: the suggestion of windows offscreen from the frames casting these thick lines over the walls and stairwell; the minute shadow details over the railing; the hatching on the suits in the portrait; the framed portrait being its own panel!! cute hooded Damian in the gutter space looking in on the portrait/panel!! CUTE HOODED DAMIANS!!
SPEAKING OF PANELS, along with general effectiveness and efficiency, there's more whimsy in others!! like this kickass page of Nightwing whipping his escrima from first panel -> afterimage lines going POWPOWPOW hitting demons from a distance to ones closer to the camera -> and back into his hand!! IT'S SO GOOD AND SO FUN!!
Tumblr media
Ba's action employs more diagonal panels, and characters are less restrained within boxes - there's more energy and freedom across the page!
Tumblr media
not necessarily focusing on the action for this one, but THE WHIMSY!! the border itself is goop!! Also gotta point out that looming hammer shape!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing's critical hit spans the entire page!! from silhouettes of a flip -> flashy stomping pose/Clayface -> to a distant shot of Dick landing
and a smooth finisher page!! love the motion lines on Dick's arms and waist + his head and arc effects popping outside of the borders; then the smaller panels for quick activity, and the final WOOB WOOB WOOB LOL i can hear this sound effect just as much as i can see it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Along with O'Halloran on colors, Aditya Bidikar on lettering works seamlessly with Ba's vision!! The text boxes for the fairy tale narration are like strips of yellowing pages from an old storybook!! Had to look up the term for this lol, but also reminiscent of those storybooks, there's even a use of "drop caps" - the big fancy capital letter!
Smaller things of note, but the bit of "Weakness" text from Ra's has a kind of. grandiose feel to it. Then the cute B< Damian behind the window!! Love how the bubble and text are faded behind the glass too! The end of the bubble tail is a nice touch as it matches well with Ba's bg inking :0
Otherwise, it seems Ba has done a majority of the lettering - dropping a couple of my favs below!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also just this whole page: the very loud AAAH! text draws both Damian's and the reader's attention to the panel below!! it's a cool transition to a new shot where you can see Damian's silhouette on the building! The final panel is cartoony violence off-page through the bold POW BOOM SLAM haha + DAMIAN'S LIL FIST!!🥺 and the guy's tooth RIP
Pure speculation - Juni Ba's concept art included Carrie Kelley, so i'm wondering if the hostage in the beginning could be her and we'll be returning to this moment in time by the end. The worn Robin colors are similar to the design + their head is conveniently covered.
Tumblr media
In terms of story, I'm obviously heavily biased, but the initial read got me rolling in emotions with how it has you caring for Damian. Damian as a character is so fantastical in essence - it’s part of his individual charm in the batfam cast! an heir of two kingdoms, born and raised with great expectations suddenly thrust into an unfamiliar land. he has a sword. he has a dragon bat for a companion. he is haunted by the sins he has committed. he is two apples tall. he's truly fairytale material!!
Tumblr media
LIKE...past the panels of only his silhouettes, this is our introductory appearances of Damian. It's laid out clearly in the narration, but this parallel is SO GOOD: from the powerful and ornate visuals of Damian and the Al Ghuls -> to a simple panel of Batman's shadow behind a boy littered in scars, stripped of his home and status
Damian is out of his element and proves himself in the way he knows how!!
Tumblr media
just kick me down a flight of stairs why don't you. i don't know which messes me up more, the top 3 or bottom 3 panels. His facial expressions!! his expectations for approval dashed!! Damian's hand reaching for his father!! only to be left alone with the body. The page after this is the final nail in the coffin in feeling just how lost he is in the world before he acts on it. And you root for him the entire way!!😭
Despite Damian's fanciful background there's so much heart to be shown in his struggles and discoveries - and this classic form of a fairy tale lays it out so brilliantly!! It's shaping up to be an amazing balance of heavier elements and whimsy based on this first issue, and it leaves you wanting more!!
Besides being a thoroughly enjoyable read, it's inspiring work!! i've ordered Juni Ba's other books to consume more of his storytelling, and here's the ones i've found so far if you're interested in checking them out as well!!
Mobilis: My Life with Captain Nemo
Monkey Meat
Djeliya: A West African Fantasy Epic
The Unlikely Story of Felix and Macabber
okay shockingly, i didn't blab about how cute Damian is as much as i thought i would, but i think the collage at the top speaks for itself lol
Tumblr media
this is all you need to know how cute Damian is in this!! his cheeks are so pinchable, it was done on page!! 🥺 these panels obliterate me

My thoughts on Robins are very simple, actually: I want them all to have a fair chance to shine and prove how amazing they are, but I draw the line at Dick Grayson Erasure
#dick grayson#that's really what most of my most hated things come down to so it's a fine generalization#'tim's been robin the longest' wrong this is Dick Erasure#'jason was tim's favorite robin🥺' wrong this is Dick Erasure#'robin and batman is the perfect title for a dick and bruce dynamic duo book' wrong...okay actually that's more damian erasure than dick#BUT to be fair it IS still erasure of him because of the fact that he's the batman in question when talking about robin and batman#yes i AM still annoyed by that book stealing damian's idea for their name why do you ask#listen...i am still hoping for just ONE acknowledgement of that line...dick having to briefly take on the cowl..#he and damian showing up among a crowd of people...someone shouting 'look! it's robin! and batman!'...#damian muttering under his breath that it DID catch on..#or otherwise it's bruce and damian showing up when someone says it...damian turning smugly and mentioning that it caught on...#bruce being confused...damian having to sit there..thinking about the fact that it was another batman and practically another life..#thinking about how they were the greatest...#bruce wondering if with all the time screw-ups he'd forgotten something that damian remembered...but he hadn't been there at all...#maybe later on damian visiting dick... bringing up the incident..passing it for a hilarious anecdote...but dick DOES remember that..#him smiling and saying to damian 'what did i say. it did catch on'...damian freezing for a minute...#then jumping into indignation because 'you did NOT call it you were being SARCASTIC i TOKD YOU we should have been robin and batman but#NOO thAt'Ll neVer cAtch oN damIAn'#wow i am rambling about NOTHING related now. go me.#anyway#void posts

Hi! I’m not sure if you’re still taking requests but if you are, can I ask for one, Batfam x vigilante!male!reader (or gn, idc) The reader is a teen (younger than Tim and older than Damian). He’s like super smart and knows martial arts and is a total badass. The bat family has been trying to catch him for a year now. The reader just stopped a drug dealing, near the docks and was about to go back to patrolling but nightwing and Robin show up. They fight for a bit and robin kicks the reader in the water. The reader is exhausted too and passes out. Nightwing sees the reader not coming back up and dives in and rescues him. They take him back to the bat cave, put him in like a cell and the batfam starts questioning him. They find out he’s a kid and a orphan and ALSO knows who they are, bruce decides to adopt him (the reader and Robin not wanting that) but Bruce says something like since the readers just a kid and he already knows their identity, might as well adopt him and keep a eye on him. Thank youuuuu, I hope you can do this! Sorry if it’s a bit much <3
Super Cool Title
Tw: profanity but honestly who cares, bad writing, bad fight scenes
Authors note: don't worry about it at all! I hope u enjoy <3 Also, the reader is gender-neutral so I'm gonna try my best to not use any pronouns. Please let me know if you find any mistakes and I will fix them as soon as possible. Also, I changed some stuff up, so I hope you don't mind.
Enjoy!

The harsh wind hit you as you jumped from rooftop to rooftop.
You'd occasionally go down if you ever heard a noise, but so far, you haven't.
It was a quiet night.
Quiet nights weren't common in Gotham, but every time there was one, something happened by the end of it.
You didn't know if it was some sort if curse put on Gotham but you honestly wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
You landed on a bridge overlooking a river, but you must be been too deep in thought to notice the loud thud behind you.
You did, however, hear the familiar voice of Robin behind you.
"ow," he hissed.
You whipped your head back to look at him and saw him there, on the ground, holding his knee to his chest.
You stifled a laugh as you crochet down in front of him, but still a few feet apart.
"What's wrong?" you began mockingly, "I thought Robins could fly, so why did you fall?".
"Fuck you," he hissed through gritted teeth.
You rolled your eyes and stared patiently at him, waiting for him to give up and ask for help.
He sensed your heavy gaze on him and glanced up at you.
"What" he demanded— rather aggressively might I add— but you decided to ignore it.
You pretended to pick at your nails then said; "oh, nothing much... Just waiting for you to swallow your pride and ask me for some much-needed help."
You smirked when his glare hardened, clearly annoyed.
He clearly wasn't giving up any time soon, so you decided to take manors into your own hands.
Standing up, you fished a mini med kit from your pockets and walked towards him.
He didn't seem to notice you until you were crouched down in front of him —closer this time— examining his seemingly hurt ankle.
He squirmed in your touch and yelled profanities at you as you tried to calm him down and keep him still.
"What do you think you're doing!? Let go of me you mo-"
"Shut up!" your voice was stern which seemed to help him follow your orders. "Stop moving so much— I can barely see what's wrong"
A quiet moment passed and soon you were bandaging his ankle.
"Why are you here, anyway?" you asked. "Still trying to catch me?" you teased with a smirk as you finished wrapping his ankle.
It wasn't a secret that Batman and his family had been trying to catch you for a little over a year now; there had been many articles written about the latest fight between you and Batman.
And, you guessed it, Batman never won.
*sigh*, you're just too cool for your own good...
A mischievous smirk graced his lips as he spoke, "Yes, was it too obvious?".
Before you could process what he was saying, he was launching himself at you and you were on the ground with him hovering only inches above you.
He raised his fists to punch you, but you caught it before it got the chance to.
Kicking him off of you, you stood up and watched as he struggled to do the same.
Your breaths were heavy and you brought your fists and guard down.
You couldn't help but feel bad for the kid. He was still young— younger than you. You know what it feels like to–
Suddenly, you were pushed to the ground, again, with somebody hovering atop you.
The fall was so hard that it knocked the air out of your lungs, but you still managed to crane your neck up to see who it was, only to have a hand planter on your head, twisting it back to where it once was.
"You good, Robin?" ah, you recognized that voice— it was Nightwing.
He nodded his head and pointed to his bandaged ankle. "Yes, I'm okay," he pointed at you, "This imbecile here helped me out".
With his other hand, Nightwing took both of your wrists and held them together as makeshift handcuffs.
Before you could speak, Nightwing beat you to it. "Oh, is that so?" he said mockingly, "I didn't know you had it in ya. Thanks for helping him out but we gotta take you back now."
You groaned. Not this shit again, you thought.
But you weren't going to go without a fight.
He stood up, picking you up in the process. He held you flush against his back and leaned down to whisper in your ear, "You won't escape this time".
You took this position to your advantage and turned your head to face him. Before he could react, you swept your tongue over his cheek.
He stumbled back in disgust and touched his cheek with his hand. He glanced down at his hand in disgust and you took the opportunity to high kick him in the face.
He stumbled back into the ground with a groan and held his now broken and bloody nose.
You turned to face Robin who was now standing up, ready to fight.
He launched himself at you once again but you punched him in the face before he could reach you.
Dumbass, you thought.
He fell to the ground, clearly embarrassed, and you circled him before speaking.
"Say, Robin, was you falling and getting hurt all part of your plan to —unsuccessfully— catch me again?" you taunted.
His glare hardened on you but then glanced behind you.
You didn't think much of it until you realized that he was starting at something behind you.
You couldn't even turn your head fully before you felt somebody hit your back, causing you to stumble forwards.
But you fought yourself before you could fall (again), and turned to face the culprit.
There you saw Nightwing again, in a fighting position.
Fuck not agai-
Your thoughts were quickly interrupted by another fight between both Nightwing and Robin.
You might've been strong when fighting with one of them, but not with two of them.
The whole thing was a blur, but all you know is that you somehow ended up tumbling down the bridge rather ungracefully.
Tumblr media
Panting, Dick turned to Damian and saskef if he was okay.
"You good?"
"Yes", he responded through labored breaths. "Now all we have to do is bring them back and hope we don't end up getting our asses beat again".
"yeah, you gotta admit they're pretty good."
Damian nodded reluctantly in response. He glanced down at the water and then asked "Why haven't they come up yet?"
He shook his head mindlessly, still trying to catch his breath, when he realized–
"Holy shit where are they!?"
Dick frantically looked down at the water, Damian following suit.
They stared in horror as tiny air bubbles made their way up to the surface.
Before Damian could, Dick dove down into the water to get you.
Tumblr media
The last thing you remember before blacking out was Robin— aka Damian— kicking you into the water with Nightwing— aka Dick— by his side.
Yeah, that's right, you know their identity.
You had to admit it took you a while to figure it out, but when you did, you honestly weren't that surprised.
What did surprise you, however, was how quickly you found Superman's identity.
That and how he hid it.
God, the people of Gotham can be so stupid sentimes
I mean— he had the money and the family, so why not?
Anyways, that's not important.
What is important, however, was for you to get out of here.
You had woken up about five minutes ago, but you made no move to show it.
You tried your best to gather some information on where and how you got here.
But that was easier said than done when you were put in the hospital room that was boarded off from the rest of what you assumed to be the Batcave.
Suddenly, the door opened and you heard two heavy footsteps enter the room, along with a light one.
"How do you find them?" a deep voice, who you assumed was Bruce, asked.
"This little demon spawn here kicked them into the water and they passed out", Dick explained.
"Hey!" Damian hissed. "I already said I was sorry", his voice sounded lower and a bit guilty than before.
Bruce only hummed, stepping closer to you and it took everything in you not to freak out.
He reached his hand out to brush a strand of hair from your face and you internally thanked him because that strand had been tickling and annoying you since you woke up.
"Well, they're something" he started plainly and they simply hummed in response.
The door opened and another set of step walked in.
"What did you find on them?" Bruce asked the mystery person.
"Well, they live in an orphanage not too far from here. Actually, its the same one Dick grew up in." his voice was tired, deep, and familiar... Ah! Tim, aka Red Robin
He continued, "Their mom and dad died a couple years ago in a car accident driving and left an inheritance of 3,000 dollars that they will get once they turn 18. Oh! And I think they know our identity"
What? How the fuck did he-
"How the fuck do you know that?!" Damian asked, earning a light slap from Bruce.
"Language!" he demanded and you could practically hear him rolling his eyes.
"Oh, because they've been awake this whole time and they have a whole Google slide about us."
Fuck.
Your eyes snapped open and everybody turned to look at you.
An awkward beat passed when Dick finally broke the this atmosphere.
"I knew that".
Tumblr media
You stood in front of the Batcomputer, arms crossed over your chest, as you watched the chaos fold right in front of you.
You changed out the hospital gown and borrowed one of Tims's old shirts that fit you like a glove.
Everybody was screaming at one another and all you did was lean back and quietly munch away on one of alfreds cookies.
His cookies were delicious and you'd gladly sell your soul for the recipe.
Speaking of Alfred, he walked up beside you with a tiny metal tray holding more cookies and gestured at you to take some more.
You gladly accepted with a small 'thank you' and he was on his way.
Jason had arrived not that long ago when he heard that they finally caught you.
He was mainly arguing with Damian and Bruce but you honestly didn't care all that much.
All you could focus on were the damn cookies.
What did catch your attention, however, was Bruce's next words.
"Why don't I just adopt them!? They already know our identity and they'd make a great addition to the family and team!" he screamed.
"Hell no" you and Damian screeched at the same time while everybody else kept quiet.
You briefly glanced at Damian only for him to look around the now quite room.
They seemed to be considering it.
Damian let out a sarcastic and breathy laugh. "There's no fucking way you're actually considering this, Father", he muttered under his breath but still loud enough for everybody to hear.
His voice was almost as small as he felt.
"For once, I agree with him" you said, pointing at him.
"Aw, look, they're both already getting along like siblings." Jadon pointed at you, "I'm gonna call you demon spawn 2.0" Jason teased and smirked.
You and Damian both snapped your heads at him and gave him the coldest glare you could muster at the same time.
Usually, Jason wouldve cowered away in fear but he was too busy laughing his ass off at the resemblance.
You both rolled your eyes and turned back to face Bruce and the others. At the same time without realizing it.
Again.
Some of them were holding back laughter while the rest had their mouth open in shock.
Damian tilted his head and you asked, "What?".
They shook their heads and went back to what they were talking about.
"Well, I don't see why not" Cass started from her spot on the table. "They already know our identity —like you said —and we could always train them to be better".
Everybody else nodded in agreement except for you and Damian, who stared in shock.
"I can't belive this-!"
"You can't be serious-!"
You and Damian spoke at the same time, causing both of you to snap your head ad glare at one another before turning your head again.
Bruce brought up a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose and sighed in annoyance.
He muttered random words under his breath for a moment as everybody stared at him in confusion.
He eventually snapped his head up and finally spoke; "It's final," he pointed at you, "you're getting adopted," he pointed and Damian, "and you two are getting along"
You both stared at him for a brief second, disbelief written all over your face as you began protesting rather loudly.
Bruce finally snapped and turned to look at you both. "I said it's final! You can't change my mind!" His voice was stern, and a bit scary, so you stayed quiet.
He sighed in relief once you actually shut up.
He turned his back to face you, muttering to himself again.
You leaned over to Damian and whispered, "does he do that often?".
Damian leaned in a bit too and answered, "yeah, but don't worry, you'll get used to it".
You nodded absently and straightedge your back again when Bruce turned to look at you two again
"See!" He gestured at you two, "you're already getting along well. Jason was right, now stop whining." He began walking away.
They're already making me grow white hairs, he thought
Jason dramatically gasped at his words and followed behind him. "What was that!?"
Tumblr media
Finally! Im done! I really hope you guys enjoyed reading this as much as I love writing this. I'm really proud of how this turned out and I'm honestly kinda surprised that I managed to finish this quickly

WIP Wednesday
Enjoy another snippet of the fic about ghost Robin haunting Jason! I really need to think up a title. Maybe I'll brainstorm some ideas and put out a poll to see what everyone likes.
Part 1 is here
And onto part 2 (1.2k words)!
-----
Looks like he was breaking his promise to Jazz to not do any ghostly business tonight. Of course Jazz’s boyfriend would be haunted by a ghost that needed help. Why was he even surprised? He adjusted the strap of his backpack to hold it more firmly. Hopefully something he’d brought would be enough and it’d be just a matter of getting Robin alone for a few minutes.
Jazz let go of Danny’s hand to take Jason’s as he led them down a hallway. Robin tightened his grip on Alfred before letting go and giving Danny a sad smile. Both Jason and Robin would point to objects and rooms as they passed. Danny paid extra attention to the items Robin pointed out that Jason ignored: a crack in the wall, a mark that had never been painted over, the chandelier he decided to hang from for a few seconds.
Voices echoed out of one of the upcoming rooms, and Jason slowed. Jazz leaned over to whisper something in his ear. Robin had the opposite reaction and shot a grin at Danny and flew to the doorway, waving him to come inside.
Danny couldn’t help but smile back at his obvious excitement. Jazz caught his expression and narrowed her eyes at him. Oh, she was not going to let this go.
With a deep breath, Jason entered the room, Jazz and Danny right behind him. “Hey everyone, this is Jazz’s brother Danny.”
Inside, too many people were gathered on a collection of chairs and couches. One man was sitting upside down on a chair, his feet on the back cushion and head inches from the ground. He grinned at them and did a flip that somehow ended with him on his feet and halfway across the room in the space of a breath. Robin cartwheeled to him.
“Hey, Danny, I’m Jason’s older brother Dick! Glad you could make it. Jazz says you’re always busy.” He held out his hand to shake, unknowingly passing it right through Robin.
Danny couldn’t help but look at where the arm passed through the ghost, but did have the wherewithal to shake Dick’s hand.
“Dick? You really use that by choice?” The words were out of his mouth before he could think. Embarrassed, he slapped his other hand over his mouth at the same time Jazz hissed a warning at him. “Shit! I mean—”
Only to be cut off by everyone laughing. Dick waved off his apology. “My parents were immigrants and it’s what they called me. After they died, I decided to stick with it. Don’t worry, I’ve heard all the jokes.”
“He’s made most of them, too,” added another black-haired boy. This one looked to be close to Danny’s age. “I’m Tim. We’re glad you could make it. Jazz mentioned you’re usually busy with work?”
Danny rubbed the back of his neck. “Uh, yeah. But I spent the last few weeks making sure I could get tonight free with minimal chance of interruption.” Not that it worked, his eyes flicked to Robin who was now hugging Bruce Wayne, the only person of the bunch he recognized on sight. And, what was that feeling radiating off Bruce Wayne? It was like liminality, but not quite. Had he died?
“Welcome to my home, Danny,” Bruce Wayne stood and came over to shake his hand with a wide grin on his face. “I’m Bruce and these are my kids.”
“Oi! Don’t call me your kid!” protested a blonde girl. “Hey there, I’m Steph and I’m just here for the food and to give Jason a hard time.” She also felt strange. Not a ghost, but the touch of death lingered. What sort of family had Jazz gotten involved in?
The rest of the group introduced themselves. Both Damian and Cass were liminal as well. So, out of the ten people he’d met tonight, three of them had died and two were as liminal as Sam, Tucker, and Jazz.
Completely ignoring the fact that Danny was trying to come to terms with all the death in what was supposed to be a normal rich family, Robin was doing even more antics to get his attention. He greeted Dick just as warmly as he had Bruce and Alfred. Cass, Tim, and Damian were the other three he seemed to like the most, though they didn’t get hugs. He didn’t react at all to Steph or Duke. He sat on Barbara’s lap for a minute, too, before returning to Dick’s side.
No one noticed the ghost desperate for their attention. Not even Jazz.
Barbara took the time to point out where the drinks were located and Danny looked over the selection of pop before grabbing a coke. He closed his eyes at the satisfying sound of the tab opening and sighed at the first taste.
One of the boys laughed and said, “You’re acting like you haven’t had a coke before.”
“Nope. I’m acting like I love coke and haven’t had any pop at all in ages.” He plopped down on a couch next to Jazz who ruffled his hair.
“Have you been traveling that long?”
Danny shrugged. “How long ago was our last phone call?”
“You don’t remember? Last week.”
“Grandpa had me doing favors for him. He dropped me off this morning.”
Jazz huffed in the way that indicated she was very annoyed. But it’s not like Danny could just not do the things Clockwork asked of him. Besides, his most recent trip was fun. He’d gone to another planet! He couldn’t wait until he could tell Jazz all about it.
Jason looked at them curiously. “You’ve never mentioned a grandfather before, Jazz.”
“Oh, he’s not really our grandfather. Just someone who helped Danny out once and decided to stick around. They’ve gotten close over the past few years. He’s fond of me, too, but we don’t have the same relationship.”
“Grandpa’s great. If infuriating at times. But favors for him are always interesting.”
“Next time feel free to invite him,” offered Bruce.
The image of Clockwork in Wayne Manor caused Danny to snort into his coke. “I don’t think he’d fit in here,” was all he said. Though maybe Robin would appreciate another ghostly visitor.
Dick did a cartwheel and landed upside down on an armchair. “What, too uptight for the likes of us?”
The last prank he and Clockwork had played on the Observants played in his mind and he smiled wider. “Not at all. You just come from different worlds.”
“I’ll have you know I grew up on the streets in Crime Alley.”
“I was a circus performer.”
“I was raised a rich kid through and through, but I hardly spend times in the upper echelons of society.”
“My dad’s in prison.”
“I’m a librarian.”
“I’m a foster kid.”
Danny held a hand up and laughed. They were still from different worlds, but he couldn’t explain he meant Earth versus the Infinite Realms. “I get it, I get it. I’ll let him know next time.”
“If he’s still in the area, you should invite him,” said Dick. “Alfred’s food is to die for.” Robin was hanging upside down next to Dick nodding solemnly.
Danny tried to stop himself, he really did. He even managed to keep from saying he’d been there done that, but he couldn’t keep from laughing so hard he couldn’t breathe.

Imagining a scenario where Tim bombing the LOA bases actually did kill a lot of assassins, but he doesn't know that. He just assumes that since no one mentioned any kill count from the bombings, that it was all just property damage.
But what if Damian knew? Imagine if Ra's sent evidence of Tim's unintentional murders to Damian, assuming his grandson would use it as ammunition to get Tim kicked out of the family and take the Robin title for himself. That way, Tim would have nowhere else to go but into Ra's dirty clutches.
Except, that never comes to pass. By the time this info is sent, Tim and Damian have already had time to do some bonding. So Damian opposes Ra's plan by deleting all the evidence. And then he later lies to Tim about how disappointed his grandfather is that he somehow blew up all those bases without killing anyone.

Do u have more tim angst. Pls i need it. Plsplsplsplsplsplsplsplspls
As I've seen quoted before, come get your angst juice:
Tim loved being Robin. He got to be a hero (the exact same mantle of his favorite heroes, Robin I and II). He treasured all that Robin was: the goofy colors, the quips, the ability to defeat those with powers when he had none, flying through Gotham's skyline, and solving cases. He centered his entire life, his entire being, around that title. There was no before and after for Tim. It's all he's ever known.
To be able to wear that R upon his own chest? He worked so damn hard. He had to peel his exhausted body off of the training mat again and again. He had to beg a grown man, Bruce, to keep living. He had to force his way into the Manor again and again when he was turned away. He stole Robin, literally nabbed the suit right out of the case, in order to fly.
He was even sent to another country, sent away by his mentor (his hero), to train. He faced off against King Snake and Lady Shiva alone!
He passed every test (even that damned 16th birthday one), every expectation, and every demand of his role.
Yet, he never actually wanted the cape. Being Robin was never about Tim. It was always about everyone else.
That is why, when Jason ripped the R from his chest, the pain felt more physical than the wounds he was given. That is why, when Stephanie briefly flew in his uniform, his emotions exploded upon each other. That is why, when Damian pranced into the room in those colors with the backing of Dick, Tim felt his world collapsing.
It is why, even though he was supposed to have given up Robin (like his predecessors did), he still calls himself Red Robin.
The mantle gave him freedom, training, and joy. He barely survived to adulthood, but it kept him going loss after loss. It was, and still is, everything to Tim. He's Robin because he's needed. He can do so much good for so many people as Robin (more than he thought Timothy Drake could do).
For Tim, being Robin is for anyone else but himself. This is why its suffocating vice grip will never truly let him go.

Jason and Damian, living their lives:
Lance, the dead brat Robin, pointing at both: pretenders
Tim, shocked: oh no he did not!
Lance, now looking at Tim: title stealer
Jason, rolling up his sleeves: come here you asshole!
Tim grabbing a broom: Now you've fucked up
Lance running away, passing Stephanie: COPYCAT!
Steph: oh, you bitch! *Joins the angry mob*

Tim Drake, to me personally, is a selective genius. More accurately, he’s just an insanely fast learner when something even mildly interests him (typically something mentioned by Batman and/or Robin). Unfortunately this leads to weird and inconsistent gaps in his knowledge.
Like, for example, and referencing a post about him being unable to work computers I’ve made in the past, Tim learned all about PC hardware because Batman mentioned upgrading the Batcomputers specs once, which was then plastered across forums with the title of like “BATMAN SEEMS TO HAVE THE BUDGET OF NASA, IS THIS WHERE OUR TAX PAYER DOLLARS ARE REALLY GOING?” and Tim wanted to harness the power of the sun to create something similar. This led him down a rabbit hole, and now he can create a super computer from someone’s spare junk drawer. However, when it comes to installing software and actually using the PC beyond its basic functions? Uninteresting. The only reason he learned later on in his Robin career was because Barbra found his lack of ability to hack deeply concerning and decided to remedy it. She provided the proper motivation.
Other weird ass conversations include:
- Was able to deduce the strain of fear toxin that Damian was under, synthesize an antidote, and track Crane down to his warehouse at the Docks district within a three hour time period. (Bruce offhandedly mentioned that they should start writing down the effects of different fear toxins so that they could eventually identify which was which to make antidote administration easier, knowing it’d be an insane and labor intensive task that no one would really do because they were doing just fine currently. Tim promptly created a spreadsheet, copped the cowl footage, and got to work. He learned advanced chemistry for this, promptly bringing his barely passing grade up to an A within two months.)
- Once was able to list the entirety of Haley’s Circus lineup over the years, correctly identifying which performers had been kidnapped by the Court of Owls, yet couldn’t name a single United States president before the year of 2012. (Got embarrassingly into circus performances because y’know, Dick is his hero and so he memorized the entire history of Haley’s Circus so he’d always know who/where/what Dick was talking about when he referenced his time there)
- Word for Word reciting an obscure peace treaty for an ALIEN NATION, but wasn’t able to tell Dick what the Fibonacci sequence was. (Starfire is Tamaranian and Tim assumed that she and Dick would get married one day and he didn’t want to be insensitive so he hacked into the Green Lantern files that all the Earth Lanterns update and got to work researching. Even the stuff that only tangentially mentioned the planet and people)

Unexpected Cohabitation a JonDami fic
Title: Unexpected Cohabitation
Main Characters: Jonathan Kent and Damian Wayne (some of the others show up too, the list is too long)
Eventual relationship: Jonathan Kent/Damian Wayne (my fave)
Stuff to know: No capes, reverse robins, high school AU, no smut, no Brucie Wayne, I know nothing about sports but it will show up, (aaand I think that's it, will add more if it comes up)
Word Count: 1,272
[Here's my table of contents]
Part 2 - Chapter 8
“This is Bat-Cow,” Damian said, patting a brown and white cow, “she’s a cow and gives milk.” “I know what a cow is, Damian.” Jon said exasperated. “My Dad’s Ma and Pa own a farm in Kansas.” After having tea in Damian’s balcony the boys had left the Mansion passing the kitchen where they saw Alfred prepping dinner. They were joined by a massive black dog named Titus as they walked past a small vegetable garden and through a wooden door attached to an old stone fence covered in vines. They continued walking through a grove of trees that, surprisingly, hid a barn surrounded by a fence. When they arrived a cow had gone up to the fence to greet them. “Why is it named Bat-Cow?” Jon asked looking around at the large fenced area. The barn was painted in dark muted colors so that it wouldn’t stand out and its doors were left open. Titus gave the cow its greetings, hopped the fence and disappeared into the barn. “Richard name her,” Damian sighed, “on account of the bat shaped spot on her face.” Jon could see it now, nodding he was about to ask why he had a cow when a white horse left the barn and galloped towards them. It stopped, neighing at Damian who petted it and took out a sugar cube from his pocket to feed it. It watched Jon wearily from the corner of its eye. “This is-“ “Let me guess Bat-Horse.” “No,” Damian responded, unamused, “her name is Lady. Jason named her.” “Why exactly am I here?” Jon asked after a pause. “It is time to bring them in.” Damian opened the gate the path had led them to, indicating Jon to follow. “You’ll be helping me muck out the stalls every morning.” “What! You’re rich, don’t you have someone else that can do that?”
Jon’s yell startled the horse causing it to buck and run into the barn. Damian glared at him and ran into the barn. Jon stood there for a second feeling bad for scaring the horse and cautiously approached the barn doors to look in. Damian was rubbing Lady’s neck, murmuring something to her. Light from the open windows shone in, casting golden rays on both Lady and Damian. It felt other worldly like an elf taming a unicorn. Damian’s ministrations seemed to soothe her and she calmed pretty quickly. Jon wasn’t sure what came over him but he took a picture of the intimate moment. He nearly dropped his phone when Bat-Cow mooed right behind him. “Oh, sorry!” Jon stepped out of the cow’s way as she plodded into her stall and laid down on a bed of clean hay. “These two are rescues.” Damian walked Lady to her stall and closed it. “Father’s condition for me to keep them was that I would be responsible for their well being.” Damian looked at Jon seriously, “I gave him my word.” There it was again, Damian’s intense stare and combined with his low voice it made something flutter in Jon’s stomach. He didn’t like the sensation, not one bit. Jon looked away gripping the hem of his shirt. His eyes wandered around the barn, trying to avoid staring at Damian and he yelped from seeing a pair of blue eyes staring down at him from the loft. Damian’s attention snapped towards him and followed Jon’s gaze. “Richard?” Damian called, looking up. The top of a black head vanished with a giggle and Jon heard soft padding from above. With a spray of hay and a yelled “catch me” a small body vaulted from the edge of the loft, flipping mid air, arms extended, a small stuffed elephant clutched in one hand. Jon felt his stomach drop, unsure if he should rush to catch the boy, but Damian took a couple steps back and expertly caught him. “Tt, I’ve asked you not to do that!” Damian admonished. “You can get seriously hurt.” “But, I didn’t get hurt!” Dick laughed hugging Damian around the neck, his hair was covered in hay and his clothes were rumpled and dusty. “Does Alfred know you were out here?” Damian glared at the boy. “What were you even doing up there?” “He knows I’ve been outside,” Dick hugged the stuffed elephant close and mumbled, “the hay reminds me of Zitka…” “Make sure to let someone know when you come out here.” Damian sighed, putting Dick down so he could stand on his own. Dick nodded and then abruptly turned to Jon smiling. He grabbed Jon’s hand pulling him out of the barn. Damian followed double checking the stalls, Titus close behind them. The sun had started to set causing shadows to elongate. Dick didn’t stop pulling until they were close to the gate, he then turned back to Jon with a mischievous grin. “I saw you.” He sang. “Saw what?” Jon stared at him puzzled. “You took a picture.” Dick continued to sing song. “He’s not gonna like that.” “Wait-“ Jon started. “I’m gonna go wash up!” Dick yelled towards Damian who was locking up the barn.
Damian waved back in affirmation. Jon stood there like an idiot watching Dick run away, Titus barking and chasing him. Damian walked up to him and gave him a strange look. Shrugging, he then poked Jon’s shoulder indicating for him to follow. “You will also be helping me collect eggs and feed the chickens.” He followed Damian to the side of the barn where a large chicken coop stood. The chickens were roosting in their enclosure. Damian walked up to a shed that was built against the coop and took out a baseball glove, a mitt and a baseball. He threw the baseball glove to Jon, who caught it. “Let’s see if you’re any good.” Damian smirked. “Isn’t it almost time for dinner?” Jon just wanted to go back to his designated room, maybe delete the pic he took before it could be used against him. “Tt, too afraid to play? I bet you aren’t any good” Damian challenged. “I’ll wipe that smirk off your face.” Jon gritted through his teeth. Jon took his place at the pitcher’s mound on the makeshift baseball diamond behind the barn. Damian stood in the catcher’s box waiting for him to throw. Jon narrowed his eyes at Damian’s casual stance, did a quick stretch to warm up his shoulders, wound his arm back and threw. The ball slammed into Damian’s mitt, his eyes widening slightly. “You’re passable,” Damian cocked his to the side to stare at Jon in thought, “but your technique could be improved.” Jon watched him wearily as he walked up behind him. “May I?” Jon nodded in response. Damian proceeded to explain a better throwing technique while also moving Jon’s body into step by step positions. His hands were warm through the jeans he was wearing, surprisingly calloused but gentle on his arms and his breath tickled the back of his neck. It was the first time that Jon was aware of Damian being a couple inches shorter than him. He took his instruction as seriously as he had that time in art class and Jon felt the strange fluttering in his stomach return. He tried to stamp it down by focusing on pitching. They continued playing even after the sun had gone down and Damian turned the outside barn lights on. A few minutes afterward Bruce came by to fetch them for dinner. The day had been busy and Jon fell asleep that night fairly quickly despite being in a foreign room. He dreamt of the color green and fast pitches.
Writing is hard guys.
I'm trying to improve, but not sure if I'm succeeding.
Still having fun though and I hope you are enjoying reading this as much as I am enjoying writing it! :D

PSA: A list of batfam members that idiotic fanon-only ppl have decided to put the mantle of Flamebird on and not seeing how misogynistic that is to Bette Kane
Dick Grayson
Jason Todd
Tim Drake
Damian Wayne (this is only fine when this is with Jon, IT IS NOT WHEN YOU TRY TO DO THIS WITH GRAYSON)
Jake Grayson (whomever the fuck that is)
Wally West. fucking Wally West. Like, how much of an asshole do you have to be to look at one of the most well-known legacy characters whose era on the title has defined the series and its lore for years to come and think "hmm, y'know, he'd be better as Flamebird"
Carrie Kelley. Girl, she already has three different mantles (Robin, Catgirl, Batwoman), you do NOT have to give her Flamebird.
Barbara Gordon (thank you @blackorchidsonefan). This one is probably the most dramatically ironic. There's a massive amount of people out there who don't see Bette as being the original Batgirl and you're deadass gonna say "yeah, let's make Babs steal BOTH of her mantles"
Unless she happens to fucking die, actually passes on the role of Flamebird or if its for Kryptonian Nightwing and Flamebird, DON'T FUCKING GIVE ANYONE ELSE THE MANTLE OF FLAMEBIRD AND JUST PUT BETTE IN YOUR STORY/FIC/AU INSTEAD.
IT'S NOT EVEN THAT FUCKING HARD, Y'ALL CAN READ MOST OF HER APPEARANCES IN THE SPAN OF A DAY (unless your some of those weird stans who think that reading 2.5 k word fanfics with major mischaracterization is better than reading the source material with pictures and words that only goes for about 20 pages each issue) Anyway, that's my PSA for y'all. Stay cheesy and go read more comics~

My Silly Application Piece for Screen Rant
Why Only Terry McGinnis Should Succeed Bruce Wayne as the Next Batman
The cowl has been passed throughout the Bat Family with reverence, and possibly, with too much frequency for something which has been identified by the Lasso of Truth as a singular person’s true identity. Bruce Wayne, as Superman says in Superman/Batman #76, is the disguise. The true identity is the one that formed in the dark, and much of Bruce Wayne died in Crime Alley with his parents. However, one of the many Paul Dini creations to make it from cartoon to comic, Terry McGinnis, is the most appropriate successor to the title Batman, for several reasons.
Tumblr media
The Gotham that Terry lives in is different from, but similar to, the Gotham which Bruce aged protecting. A technological arms race with Batman and his team has led to street gangs armed with hovercrafts, drones, and explosives. Criminals have taken up the themes and adapted the costumes of classic Gotham villains. Wayne Enterprises has been merged with Powers Industries to form Wayne-Powers, and its leader, Derek Powers, murders Terry’s father to hide the development of a mutagenic nerve gas. Early in his career, Terry creates his own first nemesis, exposing Powers to the toxic chemicals that will turn him into the villain Blight. In the same manner as his mentor, Terry creates a slowly escalating chain reaction among the Gotham underworld.
Terry’s personality is also the most similar to Bruce’s. Of all Bruce’s proteges, Terry’s brooding is the most familiar. Dick is unique in his ability to heal emotionally from trauma, Jason in his inability to do so. Damian is, in a way, loved and raised by both of his parents, as is the Helena Wayne who is the daughter of Bruce and Selena (in Tom King’s Batman/Catwoman.) Each of these Batmen wear the cowl in situations where they are mourning Bruce Wayne, their surrogate father. When Bruce is off-world or when he is dead, a Robin picks up the mantle. But Terry is trained not as Robin, but as Batman, by Batman. Terry is a direct answer to the Gotham he serves, and has solid reason to avenge himself upon the city. The loss of his father to a brutal crime, the creation of his own nemesis, his refusal to fully join the Justice League, and his perpetual exhaustion from living two lives leads Terry to be a mirror of Bruce in his misery.
Thanks to Amanda Waller, another Terry is an appropriate successor to Bruce’s city is because he is Bruce’s biological offspring. Waller, fearing a world without a Batman, found a psychological match to Thomas and Martha Wayne in Mary and Warren McGinnis, and used nanotech and a sample of Batman’s blood to replace Warren’s DNA in his reproductive cells with Bruce’s. Terry, and his brother Matt, therefore, are biologically Bruce’s. Waller’s original intent was to have Andrea Beaumont - the Phantasm - murder Mary and Warren in front of Terry as a child, to spur him into a crusade against crime.
Phantasm backed out at the last minute out of respect for Bruce, and Waller agreed, canceling the project; but her actions unintentionally spurred on the McGinnis’s divorce when Warren found out his sons weren’t his and suspected an affair. Terry coming to grips with his origin in Project Batman Beyond further aligns him with the struggle of the original Batman.
Finally, out of all of Batman’s potential heirs, only Terry has the luxury of never having worked alongside Bruce as Robin. Terry and all his rogues are a clean slate, a new chaos, and unlike any of the others,, Terry has never been a sidekick. In Batman Beyond, Bruce the role fulfills is Oracle’s; manning the computers from the cave and feeding intel into the comms.
For Terry, Bruce isn’t Batman; the batsuit isn’t Bruce’s skin, his identity, and taking on the name Batman isn’t the burden of wearing your father’s shoes for Terry in the way it would be for any of the former Robins. Terry has the ability and distance to become his own Batman, and not a temporary replacement for the real thing.

Throwing together a masterpost for my Reverse!Robins costumes
Sidekicks: [Moonbeam Duke], [Moonbeam Cass], [Moonbeam Dick] [Shadow Damian], [Shadow Steph], [Shadow Tim], [Shadow Jason] [Spoiler Steph], [Spoiler Tim], [Spoiler Jason]
All Grown Up: [Signal Duke], [Nightwing Damian], [Black Bat Cass], [Death Mask Steph], [Oracle Tim], [Bluejay Jason]
In the Future: [Batman Cass], [Black Bat Jason], [Robin Dick]
(Oh gods, I'm in so over my head...)
.
For the record, my philosophy on superhero costume design is:
At least tries to pass for practical combat gear (given the their skill/power set).
Hides their identity.
Theoretically simple enough to be drawn in a monthly comic without needing to cut out too many details or bog down the artist/s.
Stays true to the character's personality & tastes, usually drawing from costumes we've seen in canon.
(If those costumes were supposedly designed by the character themselves, even better.)
(While keeping in mind that legacy titles will come with designs that the character is iterating on, rather than starting from scratch.)
Would look cool both standing still & in motion.
Probably a good idea if there's somewhere they could store all their gear---pockets, utility belt, etc.---but it's a fun bonus rather than a requirement.

all i ever wanted is here in my arms
A Cassandra Cain-centric agere fic, Caregivers: Dick and Bruce! Fluff, little to no angst/hurt, 1.1k words! photos found on pinterest!
No warnings!
Day 4, Comics Agere Week, That is not a mouth object/Bedtime
Title from Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
Tumblr media
Cass was exhausted.
Tonight’s patrol had been heavy with crime, much like the past month they’ve been having in Gotham. It had also been sickeningly hot earlier but around sundown, rainfall had started and quickly ended, leaving a damp and groggy feeling in the air for the vigilantes to work in. The cherry on top being how her suit just didn’t want to settle. It was too tight around her shoulders and elbows, but too loose around her wrists and waist, and it just didn’t feel right.
She thinks back to when Dick had told her that was called sensory issues, having those days where nothing felt right. Always too loud or quiet, too cold or hot, too whatever it was. He had said his Robin suit used to bother him a lot in the early days, going through multiple versions and adjustments before getting it comfortable enough to where he can manage even on the so-called “Bad Days.”
She also thinks back to when Dick informed her of ways he coped with the “Bad Days,” like doing an intense workout or run to get out all his frustrations that bubbled under his skin, maybe get himself cozy and nice before napping, or sitting down with his favorite cup of tea and watching those reality TV shows that Damian scowls at.
Sleeping sounded nice.
She trekked upstairs into her bedroom, the dimly lit area just how she liked it. It was cooler than the rest of the manor, always cleaned nicely, her bed neat and tidy with Big Bird sitting right on—
She stares at the empty spot where her Big Bird plush usually sat at, her black bed seeming so vacant without his lively yellow plush decorating it.
But now that left the mystery of where he went, and with that thought, she crept out of her room and to the half open door across the hall. Dick was sprawled out on his back, hanging over his bed whilst texting someone on his phone. She pushed it open a bit further, alerting him of her presence.
“Cass! I was just about to— Wait, hey, are you okay?” Dick says, his voice turning into concern as he tosses himself around on the bed until he’s able to get a footing on the floor. Shutting off his phone, he walks over to her, looking down at her with a concerned look.
“Bird, gone.”
“Bird? Big Bird?” He asks, cocking his head to the side as a frown tugs at his lips, only furthering with his eyebrows knitting together when she nods.
“Well, he can’t have gone far, meaning he’s just hiding someplace in the manor. Do you want my help to find him?” Dick says. Cass grabs his hand and holds it, hugging around his arm as an answer. “Alright, alright. Let’s go find Big Bird!” He chuckles out, the two setting off down the hall, peeking into each room they pass for any clues.
After searching all the resident-free rooms on the second floor,— and making all of the others aware of the situation at hand while they’re at it,— they make their way downstairs to where Alfred is cleaning up the kitchen from making dinner. Maybe she had left Big Bird there from breakfast.
“Hey Alfie, have you seen Big Bird anywhere? Cass can't find him.” Dick says as he and Cass scour through the kitchen cabinets, knowing that there've been many instances that one of the others have hidden another’s toy or plush in the cabinets for hide and seek.
“I cannot say I have seen Big Bird since lunchtime, I believe Master Bruce was the last person I’ve seen with Big Bird. Perhaps you should check with him.” Alfred provides as he washes dishes.
Cass watches as Dick facepalms, grabbing her hand as he thanks Alfred for the help, making their way down a hallway. “I should’ve known Bruce probably still has him, sorry to keep you up late Cass.” He says, an apologetic expression painting his voice and face.
She squeezes his hand as a form of acceptance, making him smile as they turn a corner into Bruce’s office where the man sits behind the desk, jotting down a pen on papers that lay in front of him. The floorboards below them creak with their footsteps and his eyes flicker up with a small smile at the sight of the two.
“Hey, B. Alfred told us you might know where Big Bird is at?” To which Bruce hums, writing down a few more things before rising from his seat, reaching into a drawer in his desk and pulling out Big Bird in all his glory.
Cass squeaks with joy, a wide smile on her face as she makes her way over to Bruce quickly, taking Big Bird into her arms and squeezing his plush body tightly.
Bruce and Dick must’ve talked while she was focused on Big Bird’s presence, because when she looks up, Dick is no longer standing at the door, and Bruce is putting his work items back into a briefcase.
“Dick is going back to bed since he has work tomorrow morning and has to make his way back to Bludhaven early.” Bruce says, shutting the case and placing it on his desk for tomorrow before walking over. “So, I’ll help you get ready for bed.”
Cass nods with a small frown— she loves all of her family the same, but bedtime is always more fun with Dick. Just like how mealtime is better with Bruce, or how watching Sesame Street is much more enjoyable with Duke.
She raises her free hand up to Bruce, making a grabbing motion. He chuckles and nods, receiving her message and picking her up, placing her on his hips and beginning their journey back to her room.
After she brushes her teeth and Bruce combs her hair, thankful that she had changed as soon as she had gotten home, Bruce takes her to her bed for an overdue sleep.
“Goodnight, sweetheart.” He says softly, placing a kiss on her forehead as she snuggles into her warm blankets that Bruce tucked her into, before a pout comes on her face, pushing Big Bird up out of the covers more for Bruce.
He pauses, before placing a kiss onto the plush’s forehead. “Goodnight to you too, Big Bird,” he says with a chuckle, patting her head, then Big Bird’s.
Once he turns on the night light and leaves, she places a kiss of her own onto Big Bird’s beak, a smile on her face as she closes her eyes, rubbing his soft fur against her cheek.
After a long day of work and a long hunt for Big Bird, she’s at peace with him snuggled in her arms. She can finally sleep, at last.

Nature and Young Adult Lit
This may be a strange slightly rambling post, but one thing led to another. As I bicycle to work each day, there are several oak trees to pass which means that lately there are many, many acorns to dodge. Recently on Threads, author Jen Ferguson [Those Pink Mountain Nights] mentioned having a load of acorns raining down on the roof. This got me thinking about the chapter in Braiding Sweetgrass when the author's grandfather gathers up pecans during a year with an extraordinarily large crop. That story is a good one and may be found here. From there I leapt to thinking about nature and young adult lit because that's what my brain does.
Obviously, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer and Monique Gray Smith was the first young adult book that came to mind. It's a beautiful memoir with a look at Indigenous science and the natural world. The illustrations by Nicole Neidhardt are fantastic and make it an excellent book to pour over. See our review here.
This led me to thinking about Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley. In it, the main character has learned about nature through Indigenous teachings, but also through schooling and texts. There were parallels between Kimmerer's lived experience and the fictional account of Daunis. You can learn more about the book in our Group Discussion.
Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert is a book that that involves the outdoors and romance. We had a Group Discussion for this one too. In that discussion, Jessica mentioned Alexis Nicole Nelson, also known as The Black Forager. Looking at the acorns around me I wondered if she had done a video about them and yup, that is a thing she's collected and talked about. I don't know if she will be writing a book for young adults anytime soon, but for now, there is an incredible amount of video content on Tiktok, Instagram, and YouTube including the relatively new Crash Course Botany class.
Reflecting on nature, there is an awful lot of things that can go wrong so there are also quite a few dystopian and sci-fi books that are concerned with the environment, disasters, and climate change.
The Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation is based on Octavia E. Butler’s novel of the same name and is by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. The story follows a young girl as she navigates a world that is in severe distress. She is not only trying to survive, but she is contemplating faith and what it means to her and what it could look like for others.
The Ones We're Meant to Find by Joan He is another survival type of story in the midst of natural disasters due to climate change. The story revolves around two sisters.
Want by Cindy Pon really digs into the economic disparities in relation to climate change and environmental issues. It's set in Taipei not too far in the future. You can read more about this awesome book in our Group Discussion.
Orleans by Sherrie L. Smith is an older title, but also delves into some of these issues of the environment and economic disparities. Here is our review.
Are there other books about nature and the environment that you think we've missed or should watch for in the future?
