— SOCIOLOGY CLASS, 5:45PM —
class seemed to be going on forever, you felt as you rested your head in your hand.
the teacher was going and on about who knows what now. you glanced at the clock on the wall. it read 5:45pm. the soft clicks taunting you. 15 more minutes and you can finally see your friends.
nobody shared your last hour and a half class with you. none of them minored in sociology. everytime to stepped into class you regretted it instantly.
you slid your phone out from your bag, positioning it behind your laptop.
“remind me to never take another sociology class again,” you typed to the group chat. a few seconds later and your phone buzzed with a reply from yeonjun.
“you say this every time you have the class,” he replied with a laughing emoji.
glancing up to the clock again, you sigh. 5:50pm. you could make it another ten minutes. you tune in to what your teacher is saying and realize he’s talking about some dog his wife got and how now they have to keep it because their children have already become attached to it. you look around the class to see either people half asleep or close to it. the teacher either doesn’t notice or doesn’t mind as they’re talking a mile a minute on a rant with their hands flying everywhere.
you slide your phone back into your bag and start to clean up your supplies. by the time you put your last notebook in your bag the bell rings. the class is suddenly alive. you close your laptop, sliding it into your bag and stand up, flinging the bag over your shoulder.
your phone vibrates as you walk down the hallway and you pull it out, telling your friends that you’re on your way to the cafe now. hueningkai and jake text that they already have the table saved.
a voice startles you out of your messages, “honestly, remind me next semester to not take another late class. i'd rather take morning classes and get everything over with.” yunjin complains as she walks up next to you, her hair is a little messy and she has lines on her face that shows she just woke up from a nap. you laugh a little and she looks over to you.
“what?” a smile creeps up on her mouth and you point to her face. she opens her camera on her phone and begins to look at herself, then let’s out a small gasp.
“oh my god!” she flattens her hair and rubs at her face a little, but stops when she realizes that it’s not making the marks go away. she mutters a “whatever” under her breath. she turns to you again.
“so…” she trails off and giggles a little, “anybody compliment you on the outfit?”
you laugh and shake your head, “everyone was too busy sleeping to bother to look at me.” the two of you stop at the elevator to go down to the first floor before yunjin’s face lights up.
“fuck!” she yells. “i forgot to get my textbook!” she turns on her heels and books it down the hallways back to her last class. you shake your head at her, laughing a little.
you move to the side of the elevator, out of the way of all the other students. a couple minutes past and yunjin still isn’t back.
she must’ve gotten into it with her teacher, you think.
“are you waiting for the elevator?” you hear a voice speak.
you look up from the game you were playing on your phone to see none other than the most popular boy in your college. choi soobin, resident golden boy, and the guy who you unfortunately have a crush on like almost every other girl in the school.
you can feel your cheeks heating up. the words to reply to him seem stuck in your throat. his eyes bore into yours and it feels like flowers are blooming in your heart after years of darkness.
“y-yes.. no!” you quickly reply, stuttering and accidentally shouting the last word. you clear your throat hastily. “yes,” you start again, “but i’m waiting on my friend.” where is yunjin, you think.
he nods as if considering your words. you glance up at the LED screen that shows what elevator the floor is on. floor five, and you’re on floor three. and the rickety old thing takes forever to get from floor to floor. they really need to fix it.
it’s quiet for a moment between the two of you. you’re too nervous to get back on your phone, not wanting to seem rude and also wanting to seem attentive if he starts speaking again.
“so… you major in sociology?” soobin speaks. you raise your eyebrows in shock and before you can ask how he knows you take sociology he continues. “your textbook,” he points to your bag where half of the textbook is falling out from you moving too quickly, “sorry, didn’t mean to sound like a creep.” he lets out a small laugh and you swear it’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever heard.
you adjust the bag on your shoulders and laugh a little. “minor… and it’s okay, i didn’t think you were being creepy.” you mentally smack yourself. did that sound weird to say? did you just ruin your chances to talk to the person you’ve been crushing on since you got to this school?
if soobin thought your reply was weird he didn’t say anything about it. he takes a step towards you and your breath catches in your throat. you hands start to feel sweaty as you tightly grip the straps of your bag.
“i’m actually trying to take a sociology class next semester!” soobin exclaims with a sheepish smile on his face. he runs a hand through his hair and looks down. “how’s the class? i heard mr. lee is kinda intense.”
“it’s not that bad actually…” you trail off. and it isn’t. when mr. lee isn’t going on a tangent, the information you learn is actually really useful. “i wouldn’t take the late class though, he tends to start rambling a lot towards the end of the day.”
soobin nods and thinks your answer over. a smile spreads on his mouth. “i don’t know if this is a weird ask, but do you mind if i get your number?”
your heart completely stops and you struggle to think if you heard his words right. he wants your number? you of all people? this has to be a fever dream.
“…for questions on the sociology subjects?” soobin continues. you try and subtly take a deep breath to get the blood in your body flowing again.
“of course!” you smile softly. he pulls his phone out and scrolls on it for a second before handing it over to you. it’s already on the ‘new contact’ page, empty and ready for you to put your information into it. you take it carefully, trying not to let it show how your hands are shaking. typing in your name and number, quickly checking it over and making sure to only put your name and nothing else, you give a slight nod to yourself and hand the phone back to him.
soobin beams and thanks you. the elevator beeps and then creakily opens. you look around again for yunjin and see no sign of her. you start to curse her in your head before remembering that if she was here you would have to get on the same elevator ride as soobin.
thank you yunjin. i love you and you’re the best and i’ll never doubt your ability to get in trouble again, you think to yourself.
soobin walks in the elevator and turns a little, “coming?” embarrassment shoots through you and you shake your head a little.
“my friend…” you start to say before soobin cuts you off with an “oh yeah! sorry about that! it was nice talking to you, i hope to see you soon.” and as the last word comes out his mouth, the elevator doors shut.
finally you feel like you can breathe again. there’s no way that just happened. absolutely no way. shakily you open the messaging app on your phone and type out a message to your friends, demanding that they all come to the chat this instant.
your phone buzzes as yunjin comes barreling around the corner. “sorry! so sorry!”
as she runs down the hallway she continues, panting and out of breath, “stupid bitch was telling me off for forever for sleeping in class and forgetting my book. as if everyone in that forsaken class wasn’t asleep. that’s a problem with her as a teacher and not me as the student.” her phone is in her hand, open to the group chat.
she doubles over and breathes heavily for a couple seconds before lifting her phone up and shaking it a little. she stands up straight and manages to breath out a “what?!”
“i know!” you say, excited and nervous all at once. you tell yunjin exactly what happened, not leaving out a detail, and telling her your inner thoughts. you can’t help but think about how out of a movie this all feels. the popular and unpopular girl and boy. it almost too on the nose, and you wouldn't have believed it if it hadn’t just happened to you.
the hallways are long deserted and you and yunjin boast each other on the what ifs that could’ve happened as you wait for the elevator to make its way back up to your floor.
“what if when i grabbed his hand to put my number in, he pulled me to him and kissed me!” you squeal. yunjin makes an ‘O’ face and points to you, “that would’ve been so good! and then it’s all like ‘time stopped even though it was only a couple seconds.’” she puts her hands over her heart. “‘and the elevator dings as we go into our happily ever ever!’”
you both giggle as the elevator does ding and you step on to it.

masterlist.
summary: choi soobin has always been the popular kid surrounded by his popular friends. y/n… not so much. one night, soobin and his friends make bet that soobin can’t get y/n to date him in a month. unfortunately for y/n, they’re a hopeless romantic.
A/N: first written chapter! and so the bet begins… how did you feel about the chapter! enjoy!

CHAPTER 1: She knows how to get the best out of me
Tumblr media
Warnings: s3lf harm themes, teacher x student relationship, heavy emotions.
One of the girls (AU) Men and minors dni!!!
It’s a day when y/n felt trapped in a pit of boredom. The heat was suffocating, and every minute felt like an eternity. She waited for the class to get over, her gaze drifting aimlessly around the room as she counted down the seconds until the end of class. 1800 seconds, 30 minutes
the monotony bored her out of her mind, thoughts of her teacher, Ms. Romanoff, kept coming up through Y/n’s gloomy mind. She couldn't help but imagine the most lustful thoughts about the teacher. Her hands, her deep raspy voice. The way Ms. Romanoff commanded the room with her confidence and grace. It was a brief respite from the dullness of the lesson, a small spark of excitement in an otherwise dreary day. But it still didn't change how y/n was feeling. The teacher was going on about some assignment but y/n couldn't care less and only wanted to feel her. But she would never let anyone in on her darkest fantasies
But then, like a bucket of cold water, Ms. Romanoff's sharp voice cut through the silence. y/n snapped back to reality, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment as she realized she hadn't been paying attention. She tried to focus on the lesson, but the words seemed to blur together, her mind drifting back to the thoughts of Ms. Romanoff. She sees the professor walk towards her not aware of what's going to happen. Oh fuck “Ms……?” “y/n,” you say “Miss y/n I expect you to be more attentive, or if you prefer to sleep over my lesson then kindly leave “I'm sorry ms Romanoff, I just felt a little-” “I do not want to hear your excuses” She cuts you off walks to her desk again and continues teaching What an asshole
As the minutes ticked by, Y/n grew more restless. She couldn't wait to escape the confines of the classroom and breathe in the fresh air outside. But when the bell finally rang, signaling the end of class, Y/n felt a pang of nervousness, but she never showed it
She gathered her things, trying to blend in with the crowd as she made her way to the door. But just as she reached it, she heard Ms. Romanoff's voice calling her name. *Y/n*'s heart sank as she turned to face her, her stomach churning with anxiety.
Ms. Romanoff's expression was stern as she scolded Y/n for not paying attention in class. *Y/n* felt her cheeks burn with shame as she mumbled an apology, her words barely audible over the noise of the other students leaving the room. Her harsh words were making you feel things. “I'm sorry I assure you it won't happen again” you blurt out just trying to get this done and move on. “I wanna know why this happened in the first place” “I told you I was feeling lightheaded,” you say and clutch the desk for dear life “You could-” Natasha gets interrupted “Miss Romanoff!” yells out the sociology teacher, Miss Maximoff. Miss Romanoff glances at you and says “We’ll continue this later” and scowls and goes to her colleague.
Feeling like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, Y/n hurried out of the classroom, your mind racing with thoughts of what had just happened. She felt a mix of embarrassment and frustration, wishing she could go back and do things differently.
Leaning against the wall in the hallway, *Y/n* took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. She felt trapped like she couldn't escape the cycle of monotony that seemed to define her life. You shut your eyes
“Are you okay?” Miss Romanoff says You open your eyes, tremble out a response and quickly scatter away.
I put on my noise-canceling headphones and walk at a slower pace. I have never had an anxiety attack. I spout a cafe and buy myself iced tea and a sandwich. I feel just a little better, enough to get up and walk home I put on my sunglasses, the heat is unbearable. I still feel hollow, and hungry but at least I won't faint. I'm walking and*bump* *slosh*  FUCK MY ICED TEAYou hardly pay attention to who it got spilled on, rather you dread the loss of your 4 dollars.
You take off your sun goggles and look up to apologize. God? Do you hate me“I see we meet again,” she says
She? Ms. Romanoff “Listen, miss it's a really bad time, bad day, bad luck whatever. I'm sorry, again for this,” you say with eyes that convey your regret and pain “It's okay, it's leather anyway, get me a tissue will you?”
“Sure yeah sure” You pull out a handkerchief with your initials embroidered on it in the corner. And hand it to her. You don't give much thought, to avoid further awkwardness you run away “Hey, your napk-” but you were already gone.
The professor picks up your emptied iced tea and throws it in the trash can. She looks at the price and scoffs “Relying on caffeine instead of meals? Of course, you faint and have a bad day, stupid” She wipes the sticky spilled iced tea off her leather coat and orders 2 shots of espresso and bruschetta. You reach home, enter your dorm house, and break down in tears. You don't know why, are you in such a state right now? y/n was never the kind to be easily dominated or to break down so easy You take off your clothes and get into a steaming hot shower. Hot enough to turn your skin red, painful enough to hurt a lot, but not hot enough to melt you completely into the drain. The water turns cold which sends a sharp sting to your slightly burnt skin. You get out, and take out day-old spaghetti. Day old? It has grown some new life on it. You throw it out. You door dash some pizza. At 8 pm your bell rings which scares the shit out of you. You weren't used to anyone visiting you, your food already arrived and parcels didn't arrive at night. It is a delivery guy with a huge. A huge drink of iced tea The guy hands you a letter You open it ‘Complete your assignment on Kafka's imagery and metaphors’ ‘N.R’ Who? …………………………………………… Oh ‘N.R’ Natasha Romanoff She sent me an iced tea. Oh for earlier. You can't help but smirk at the gesture. You send her a text You : “Thank you for the iced tea, sweet gesture but confusing. Regardless, thank you. Btw how did you get my address?” 8:43 Ms Romanoff 💗 “You forget that you live on the dorm grounds and I just had to make one call to the dorm manager to ask where you live” 9:01 “Oh.” There are better times for iced tea. But I'll drink it anyway. Maybe I will in the morning The fact that she took so much effort to find your address and sent the same iced tea just for me Oh god, she makes me feel the worst things. You scroll through your Twitter feed and fall asleep while watching the Grammys drama and being sad over the fact that Lana del Rey didn't win. again. 7:45 am. The alarm which had been slept through 9 times rings. You open your eyes. The sun is shining a little too bright Of course
You're late
You brush your teeth. Change into an unironed skirt and a blouse. You grab your laptop, a notebook, and some pens. Phone yes, phone is also necessary.
The iced tea
7:58 am You grab your bag and the iced tea and dash out. You'll make it in time for sure. You calculate in your head. The walk to your class should take 15 minutes. Class starts at 8:30 You stop at the cafe again. Before entering you see a head of bright red hair. Should I stay or should I go, is the question to ask and the song playing inside the cafe which you can faintly hear. The assignment fuck. Maybe I should skip her class. But that's rude. She sent me iced tea yesterday. Why am I? y/n letting a woman dominate my life over such a trivial matter
Fuck it I'm going in*ding* The cafe bell rings but Natasha doesn't bother to check who has entered. You toss the empty drink of iced tea in the trash and walk up to the counter hoping the woman doesn't notice you. Which she does. You turn to look at her.
It's not Natasha “Good morning Miss Maximoff!” thank god“Oh good morning sweetheart, come sit!”  she is adorableYou order a croissant and a small drink of coffee Miss Maximoff was having the same thing “Hey so um, I was just heading-” “To college? Coincidence much?” she laughs and says “DO you come to this place often?” Wanda asks “No, not really. I properly took notice of this place yesterday. I find it convenient” “Well us professors come here often, I guarantee that whenever you come here you find a professor here or two” “Oh wow crazy huh” Her alarm rings. “y/n what class do you have “Huh” “Which class do you have for first period” she says as she starts to speed up her eating process ad starts packing her notebooks “Oh literature, miss-” “Romanoff, yes. Well hurry up I'm sure Natasha is not fond of late people “Yeah- uh- what time is it?” “8:20” “FUCK, um sorry miss Maximoff, I- am late thank you for chatting i-i need to go-” you head to the counter and pay. And dash out Wanda was left with a confused expression.
You enter your class and sit down in the backside corner seat in hopes of avoiding Natasha’s gaze on you.
Exactly a minute later she entered the room and the first thing she does is look at you and smirk a little. That action made your heart speed up. “Good morning class, I have an idea for your seating arrangement. I think the students who don't participate or have trouble participating should come up in front. So I can divide my attention equally”Oh god. I bet my life She'll call me first“Why don't we start with……” she looks around the room and her eyes land on you as she smirks.
“y/n! Come on up front. right in front” Your stomach churns and you flush very obviously
You sit uncomfortably, Natasha's gaze has been on you for a long time. She moves one or two students around more and then starts the lesson.
Your eyes never leave her figure. How her lips move, her stance. All this while she's well aware of your eyes on her which she loves.
Natasha's mind was no less innocent. Natasha was a very experienced woman who knew how to get her way with everyone. But she never laid eyes on a student because she never felt they were up to par. But the way y/n would look at her made her think of how to ruin her. She wanted to completely control the poor student.
But Natasha didn't know that her student wasn't so innocent after all. y/n wanted Natasha. Sure she has made out with people and gone second base. But she always had a narcissistic side to her which led her to believe no one could satisfy her. But for Natasha, she’d go to extreme lengths to just be touched by her. She felt an unexplainable attraction to her.

Because i have due history, maths, sociology, english and science homework that i haven't even started, im gonna waste even more time and tell you how i think the marauders are with homework
Sirius: Uses his trauma as an excuse for not doing it because Minnie would never give him shit for that. He gets away with it every time. He's actually too busy staring at Remus
Remus: Leaves it til the last minute but always excels in it. Struggles to concentrate since Sirius keeps staring
Peter: Makes the funkiest excuses why he hasn't done it and somehow gets away with it. like the famous "i was busy walking my fish"
James: Forgets about it and rushes it quickly before going to the lesson, sometimes leaving it half done or unfinished but gets marked well on the parts he completes
Lily: Hands it in before the due date but it's covered in doodles because she got bored doing it
Mary: Asks Lily for help just to spend time with her but no work actually gets done because they're too busy laughing and joking
Marlene: Doesn't usually do it but Mary and Lily force her to so she doesn't get detention. She always has to have music on in the background while doing it or she can't concentrate
Regulus: Does it on time, perfectly but always complains about doing it. Also complains when James gets detention for procrastinating his because it's 'less time' to spend together
Dorcas: Copies one of the other Skittles, mostly Regulus but she has to steal it since he doesn't like the thought of her getting into trouble for copying
Evan: Does it with Barty and passes
Barty: Does it with Evan and fails because he's too busy thinking about making out with him. Disappoints teachers since he's intelligent
Pandora: Starts the homework but somehow rambles her way into a different subject like the meaning of life and fuck knows what else. She could be writing an essay on polyjuice potions and then talk about the process on how caterpillars turn into butterflies

Admiral 😘🥰
I have always loved school work and learning as a development process but some subjects make me bored, extremely bored and like I'm like why do the most boring teachers get hold of something or a course that is supposed to be fun.
Well, I'm a law student and you may refer this writer as Dinma. I love my course but some borrowed courses make me sick, one of them is Sociology..... quite funny.
Just like a sudden rain in the hot weather, you know, it brings a sort of surprise and awe. I had decided to leave the class and go use my time "wisely" when one sophisticated, flashy, beautiful and milk like skinned woman entered. The whole class went silent and the silence whispered"luxury or nothing" Her steps were more like the steps of princess Amber in Sofia the first, her voice reminded me of Celine Dion, her body shape was so beautiful and she was so calm, so cultured and so coordinated.
Her class was a shock to most if us, in my head I imagined how sociology could have been if the other lecturers could imitate her. Her class was active and still filled with bursts of laughter and gists, we finally got to see a gen-z lecturer teaching an ancient course. I admired her and told myself: Luxury in this life or nothing, my dressing and coordination must make people turn and listen to me.
I learnt the importance of dressing well as a teacher, Baker, Cook, lawyer and whatever field you find yourself in. The way you dress could be the reason why persons listen to you, you may not know much but your dressing can cast a spell on the audience and make them clap in awe and admiration.
I ADMIRED HER and when she stepped out, I was convinced that sociology was not a boring course after all.
Luxury or nothing.

hey!! so im a law student and i have a class of sociology this year. i really want to study it properly (didn't take humanities in 12th) but the teacher and syllabus naturally focuses a lot on the legal intersection with socio and not the subject pure. as far as i remember, you once mentioned studying socio for your college degree (and my sincere apologies if I'm incorrect), so if you don't mind could you please recommend some book/papers/anything that i should cover to gain a proper understanding? or any good reading you think is important to cover. I don't know any humanities major students, else I'd ask them 😅 thanks a lot for reading till here lol
oh damn uhhh. hm. the basic theoretical texts are very dry and boring and i would not recommend them to anyone tbh, so i'll just pick those which I personally find interesting/give a general overview of useful themes/make important points. But in general sociology is very wide and constantly appropriates authors from other disciplines so it's very hard to say what "belongs" to sociology and what doesn't.
- the sociological imagination by c.w mills (you don't have to read the whole thing, just the introduction is fine)
- communist manifesto by marx & engels
- selected essays on subaltern studies - this is my favourite one
i don't want to recommend Weber you because he's terrible to read BUT legal sociology borrows from his theories heavily so I'd say do the bits of chapter one of economy and society where he focuses on the definitions of sociological concepts, where he covers law and power, and then chapter 3 which is concerned with types of power and authority.
- introduction, 1st chapter, and conclusion of durkheim's elementary forms of religious life. also the sacrifice bit in the positive cult.
- The creation of patriarchy by Gerda Lerner (the origins chapter)
- annihilation of caste by ambedkar
- discipline and punish by m. foucault, the part about the panopticon (i think all law students should read this tbh)

Doomsday preppers bore me.
Speaking a little bit about my background again.
So. It's 1995-96. I'm 11-12 years old. Parents divorced, we've since moved from where we started into a trailer so I can go to school in a new town, because the old one had a teacher that was an immovable object and destroying my mental health. Mom would either have needed to stop being an utter cunt and bringing her stress home with her to take it out on me, or my teacher would have to, and rather than just stop being a cunt at me, she chose to put me in a different school in a different town.
So we moved in with my 40-something dad after my parents divorced. She was a raging bitch again, dictating things she had no right dictating, starting screaming matches over control issues and just generally causing problems and dilemmas so no one could have any peace unless they were submitting to her and giving her attention. Just privileged (the real definition, not the sociology major one) white woman shit, knowing the law at the time would stan for her no matter how much of a raging cunt she was to everyone and everything. Any excuse to kick a man out of his own home was a good excuse, and everybody knew it.
It got so bad my father took on an obscene financial burden just to buy a house down the street and stick us in it so he'd have his space back. Since mom was hellbent on getting every dollar from him and lording ownership of his property over him while both of us, his kids, were under 18.
By 1996, she had really fallen off the deep end and was being a belligerent and aggressive bitch to everyone and everything for no reason other than they weren't doing exactly as she wanted, immediately when she wanted it. Failure to do that meant she was going to just make your life miserable as a pasttime, since women do not reap physical consequences for these actions without triggering other women's "THAT COULD BE ME! I CAN'T TOLERATE THAT HAPPENING TO ANOTHER WOMAN! SHE'S A MOOOOMM!!!" response.
She started writing down her delusions in a lined notebook. She's always believed she was some sort of psychic/sensitive spiritualist. She identifies as a Christian and sees "the occult" as bad, but she believes herself to be holyer-than-thou and thus, her self-aggrandizing brand of pseudo-spirituality is centered around receiving divine prophecy. Any stupid thing she imagines, she believes is going to happen and continues to look for it. Anything she did not personally imagine, she discredits as impossible, because she didn't foresee it.
So you can have the flu and she won't give a shit and consider you exaggerating your pain and distress, but if she "prophesices" you're going be ill, she ignores how you actually feel and projects her delusions of how sick you're going to be onto you. Just, antagonize you to try and get you to play out how she imagines reality working. It's like being aggressively Live Action Roleplayed at and being stuck in that awkward moment where you won't do what she imagined is true.
It's a kind of narcissism where she's both acting as well as deluding herself to try and convince herself and those around her of her preferred way of seeing the world. She AGGRESSIVELY tries to gaslight reality itself. That level of audaciousness and pride is just, 10/10 asshole. And it's exposure to this raging, consequence-free, insulated piece of shit that has forced me to intolerance when dealing with them. Because like any petty dictator, you can be as deluded and egotistical as you want so long as you make OTHER PEOPLE die or suffer for your delusions. She sacrificed my health, safety and future by forcing my participation in her delusions as a consequence of living around and with her, so whenever she faced setbacks, she demanded I somehow MAKE her delusions work, or not only did I get punished by the consequences of her disgusting decisions independent of her response to it, but I was given the blame for them when they failed. Like it was my ass that filled the room with canned food until the cheap plastic shelves collapsed.
So anyway. By 1997, she had a raging "I'm just, like, psychic, y'know?" boner of self-importance, and she looked around to find literature that'd compliment and play along with her delusions. She was depressed, and the only reason she wasn't suicidal was because she was too prideful to die while we, he kids, were still young and dependent. But, she was miserable. Independent of anything else, she wanted a situation where she could die but be utterly blameless for it.
In fact, she wanted to go to heaven but it be God's will, but god wasn't cooperating. Outside a few panic attacks, she was fit as a fat flabby fiddle. Dispirited, she started diving into literature that confirmed her bias and found a culture of similar doomer-boomers online, from similar backgrounds and attitudes. She found the world of Christian online rapturism.
Now, when one imagines these, they imagine a very top-down hierarchy of cultists preaching to ignorant, receptive, submissive sheep about bible scripture and what for sure is going to happen. This is not true. Each person in that room that is not the preacher has certain expectations for them to confirm their bias and say what they want said, and the preachers that would be popular have to read the room to figure out their bend, biases and what they want, in order to affirm the bias. They are only giving these supposed preachers the power over them to fit that role. If the preacher starts dictating things they don't believe, they lose their top-from-the-bottom narcsisstic flock and wind up followerless. They aren't all a bunch of Pentacostal tongue speakers babbling nonsense or Catholics LARPing demon exorcisms.
So she joined these 'prepper' forums where boomerdoomers talk about how the end for sure is coming you gais, it's prophesized in dur by-bull.
The number of nights I had to listen to this stupid bitch moaning and diatribing to herself about "the mark of the beast" being an ID chip for some dystopian cyberpunk world, and microchips in milk and other stupid shit, were far too many. Chemtrails being poison by some nebulous government agency poisoning the air (JUST FUCKING WAKES OF PLANES YOU DUMB CUNT) and, just, an endless cavalcade of confirmation biases for her delusions. And every single one gave her the confidence to fake it until she made it about The Rapture being right around the corner.
The truth was, I think, she hated the idea of "being used" by us, her kids. Me, in particular. We'd finally gotten stable to where, as a nurse, she was pulling in between 65 to 70K a year in 1990s money. She wasn't paying rent or a mortgage, because the house we lived in was owned by my father, they were divorced, and him paying the mortgage was basically like child support since it meant she didn't have to pay rent to live anywhere. That was easily $1,200 a month in savings.
So how did this selfish cunt spend the savings? Was it on securing new cars to get from A to B? Was it on college educations for us, her kids? School supplies? A second car, so I'd be able to get to and from a job in order to make my own money?
No. She blew what savings that would've come from that out of her disgusting cottage cheese ass on frivolous feel-goods. Going out to the movies every weekend, buying movies, buying junk food, driving around waaaaay more miles than was good for the car, paying automotive bills from using the car too much, throwing fistfuls of money to lord how she was "the good sister" and a martyr and oh how her sisters abused her generosity, at all her sisters.
And she expected ME to get a job, put a car in her name, buy the car, have absolutely no control over where I could go with it, no right to drive it without her explicit direction and permission, but all responsibility to take care of it from maintenance to gas money (and she loves to just ride around in circles for no other reason than to wastegas.) And wanted all my future minimum wage dollars to go towards paying her bills..
So she could, again, blow more of her own money out of her ass. Which she patted herself on the back for by taking the initiative and spending, whether we wanted her to or not, to then wail and scream about how we "owed her" and she'd expect us to fork over our income when we were making any.
So from 1997 to 2002, conveniently from the time I went from 13-18, this world class cunt became the most insufferable, entitled, antagonistic, greedy bitch in the world. Every minute of the day had to be about her, every dollar had to be about her delusions, every inch of space in the house was taken up by her spending exorbinant amounts of money on canned foods and powdered milk and other nonsense until just moving through the house was an episode of Hoarders.
No matter how much I might say, "We HAVE NO MORE FUCKING ROOM!" She'd just buy more because, "IT WAS ON SAAAAAALE. MAKE ROOM!!" and make it my responsibility to Tetris-block rearrange her shit so we could fit more into the way too small house.
It wasn't bad enough that she was keeping us poor as fuck by only investing in her delusional, "seven years of tribulations and strife" food, preceding the rapture. But that she filled the house with her shit, and forced me to participate in moving it around. Forcing other people to normalize your delusions is a power move intended to dominate and control the environment and setting in which other people live. It's a way to try and impose reality onto them by forcing them to interact with it on your terms.
I couldn't have any social life, money to go with other people, or even build my own future, because this disgusting cunt wanted to LARP out some fantasy that god would swoop down, alleviate her need to kill herself to escape reality, and bring her up to heaven while everybody she disagreed with burned in hell beneath her. But I didn't want to surrender to the state and just become homeless.
I wanted her to snap the fuck out of it. I thought she was just a proud moron, not rotten to her core evil. I know better now, but I will never, ever give anyone the benefit of the doubt like this again. You show me who you really are once, I'll believe you, even after you claim to change. Because the reality she was going to be not just worthless but a detriment to my life was too cold and horrible to imagine for teenaged me. The reality was worse than I ever could've imagined.
She never got better. Even after her date of 2000 new years when the rapture was supposed to happen, the world didn't end. Nor did it happen on new years 2001. So we go into 2001, and she's still talking about "any day now." Since she married herself to the idea Jesus was going to beam us up and there was no reason to invest in the future because God made sure heaven was going to be our future.
I was going to turn 18 in summer of 2002. I figured she'd see that she'd been foolish and just went through a rough spell, mentally, and would recover.
And then fall 2001, 9/11 happened. She got back on her bullshit and being irrational and unreasonable. With added bigotry towards Islam above and beyond the antipathy that Islamototalitarianism deserves.
Then that stupid murmuring of prophecy shit caught in her dumbass Doomsday prepper online forums, and 2012 became the next big date of global catastrophe. Which, surprise surprise to people in 2024, was another great big fat fucking nothingburger.
I have no patience or tolerance for doomerboomers. I know exactly what you are. It's ugly, it's selfish, it's ignorant, it's mentally diseased and it belongs in a god damned nuthouse.
The only reason I didn't try to have the stupid bitch committed was she was just functional enough to provide a bit of money for my grandparents (her parents) to keep them out of complete poverty.
Well. Both my grandparents are dead, now. And all her sisters and brothers (my aunts and uncles) are despicable, selfish, delusional assholes that I wouldn't piss on to put them out if they were on fire. She's no less psychotic and insufferable now than in the 00s. Less so, even. I lose nothing and hurt no one if telling the police about her would get her put on the funny farm.
Anyway. Yeah, the eclipse brought out people like her in droves, and it made me angry.

omg hi again!! i've been a lil busy with school and IAs and community service, it's been exhausting! but, i'm finally starting to get into the flow of it all so hopefully i'll be more consistent~! ^^
school has been perfect! totally stressful definitely but i've accepted that as part of the school experience lol! my friend group is fun, my teachers are great and classes are literally never boring (except for communication studies... talk about a snooze fest ₍⌯́⌓⌯̀ ₎...) and i do community service at a school with the sweetest students! literally everything's been going great for me and i love that ^^
outside of school on the other hand... not much has been happening (⌒_⌒;) that's how my life has always been haha! i do plan to go out with my mom on saturday though so i look forward to that~~!
also i've taken a random interest in sociology and chem, more out of boredom than genuine interest lol. and i have a small book that i draw ponies in to show this guy i like — childish i know, but he enjoys seeing the drawings and i enjoy drawing them so it's a win-win.
i have nothing else to blab about haha! i am feeling a bit sick right now though ^^"
until next time though ~!
— xoxo cc

Ranking the books I read in January
Still doing this yo. I wrote a LOT. because I have a lot of thoughts about the very good books I read this month. and…I’m avoiding my homework (oops)
Tumblr media
The Rehearsal - Eleanor Catton
All of my favorite authors have one thing in common, and that is that they allow their characters to have thoughts that make no sense. Thoughts that are selfish and odd and just plain confusing. Because if we are honest, we all have thoughts like these. In The Rehearsal, the characters voice these thoughts out loud. They say extremely rude, mean, things to each other. They say these things as if they are in a play, almost as if they are ‘fleabag’ style, turning to the audience. And yet none of the characters ever confront the speaker about the weird speeches. Very normal standard situations turn weird when, for example, a saxophone teacher tells her student’s mother that her daughter really is quite a boring child, and her least favorite student. This abject truthfulness weaves its way through the book, and can become addicting to read. The book follows three main stories: a saxophone teacher and her students, a boy at a performing arts college, and a student at the local high school who was groomed by a 30 year old teacher. Except the third story is only told through the perspective of the first two. And eventually it all does come together. Additionally there are parallel storylines about two unfortunate unrequited sapphic relationships, which I thought was the most interesting aspect of the book. In addition to the themes of adolescence, pedophilia, and homosexual relationships, I would say the main theme is Performance. The book itself feels almost as if you are reading the script to a play, and there are many points in which the author literally describes a set. This book really delves into the shakespearian/sociological idea that ‘all the world's a stage, and everyone is playing a part’. The characters show their true feelings as if they are monologuing in a play, and yet true adults would be breaking character in so many taboo ways if they behaved this way. I really cannot speak highly about this book enough. I know many people mark this as Eleanor Catton’s stepping stone before she wrote The Luminaries, but this is easily one of my new favorite books. A very niche way of describing it is if you combined the theater/grooming parts of Trust Exercise and the sapphic parts of My Education into one very fucked up book.
Tumblr media
No One Belongs Here More Than You - Miranda July
Remember how I was saying I love it when characters have weird thoughts? Yeah. Well, Miranda July is the queen of writing characters like this. Her characters will say the most illogical, confusing, naive things with the utmost confidence, and you almost have no choice but to agree. But underneath this confusion is a deep, tragic layer of sadness. My interpretation is that these illogical ideas her characters have are a byproduct of their deep loneliness. The logic of loneliness. The type of ideas you catch yourself having when you are so sad that you realize are very odd. I don’t know if I would have related so much to this book (and The First Bad Man), if I had not read it now, after two of the loneliest years of my life. I’m sure many people can relate. Ultimately the thing these short stories all seem to have in common are deeply lonely main characters who form unexpected relationships. Some of them are  heartbreaking, in a way I don’t think many stories are able to accomplish (My heart has still not recovered from The First Bad Man). My favorite story in the collection is one about a girl who moves to Portland (hey that’s where I am) with her childhood crush/best friend/unrequited love. Her friend abandons her and through a few circumstances she realizes her friend will only love her when she wears a wig. It is genuinely so sad, but it will stay with me forever.
The other thing about Miranda July is there is a layer of absurdity to her stories that I just love. Who else would write a story about teaching swimming to senior citizens without a pool, or having Madeleine L’engle randomly appear, but for seemingly no reason!
But ultimately I think the thing about Miranda July is that nothing I have read has been able to explore the absurdity and heart wrenching feelings of loneliness.
Now that I have read The Last Bad Man and watched Kajillionaire (literally amazing movie. Go watch if you haven’t) and read this book, I am devastated that she hasn’t published any other books. She’s probably too busy doing artsy stuff. All my old art professors follow her on instagram.
Tumblr media
Disobedience - Naomi Alderman
What I really appreciated about Disobedience, a book about two sapphic women raised in a stifling orthodox Jewish community, is that it is not a love story. It is a story about one woman who “escaped” the homophobic, misogynistic community, and the other one who did not. They used to be romantically involved, and when the one who left returns for a funeral, it makes the first evaluate her entire life. I thought it was very nuanced, and absolutely lovely writing. The way it connected faith with feminism and sex was really well done I thought. I also really appreciated that the husband character was very well written and a very interesting character unto himself.
I was actually surprised at how good I found this book to be. Mainly perhaps because I read The Power before this, and I honestly didn't’t know Naomi Alderman knew what a lesbian was. But I guess she does.
Tumblr media
The Vegetarian - Han Kang
This book was so well written but unfortunately I don’t have anything smart to say about it. The first third was an incredible exploration of social norms and what will happen if a woman decides she no longer wants to adhere to them. The next two thirds are equally interesting, and I just loved the writing and the family dynamics explored.
Tumblr media
Ruinsong - Julia Ember
Ruinsong is a wlw retelling of The Phantom of the Opera (though a bit different because the Raul equivalent is actually likable!) and I have to say, I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would! I usually DNF YA books if I don’t think they are written well enough, but this one was great.
Tumblr media
The Power - Naomi Alderman
Oh…what can I say. This book was made to make you think. And you know, I can respect that. About half way through is when this book started to make me angry. Like really angry. Like throw down the book angry. And that’s because a lot of it is unrealistic, and hard to read, and frankly annoying. But honestly, I do think I can look past a lot of that. I think it’s made to make you angry and unsettled. But there are some things I cannot look past.
The main idea of the book is this: if women were given power over men, they would start sexually abusing, objectifying, and discriminating against men in the same way men do to women currently. This, obviously, has caused many people to hate the book. Here’s the thing. I can get down with the main point. I mean…it’s unpleasant to read about. And for me it’s hard to imagine women would be so terrible so quickly after gaining power over men (but maybe they would…), like I think it would take some time! But anyway, all that aside what I cannot get past about the book is how the author decides because she is making this giant general point, that she does not have to reckon with race or queerness. As a white person idk how much I can say about the race aspect except that it’s not in it at all. The cast is very diverse, but racial discrimination is barely mentioned at all. But now…let’s get into the queerness aspect. This author packs so many different characters and different perspectives into one book. And yet none of them are queer. There are sections in this book that are all about how, if women got superpowers, suddently the whole dynamic would shift. Boys would be worried about interacting with their female classmates, teenage girls would have more control, etc etc etc. There is a lot about how the relationships between men and women would change and yet not once do they even the word “gay” or “lesbian.” The closest it gets is one character is mentioned to “like girls and like boys, especially boys who looked like girls” okayyyy… but that’s as far as it goes. I’m sorry but in a book that is literally about the relationship men and women have between each other, and mention the sexual dynamics of that A LOT, it’s a kinda large oversight to not even mention any queer people. She really is writing a book for 5 year olds who think there are two genders men and women and that’s the only kind of relationship there is. If you read the book you will understand how frustrating this is. I would have said “I don’t think Naomi Alderman knows what a gay person is,” except she literally wrote Disobedience! About lesbians!! AGH.
Not even to mention the biggest, most glaring problem with the book is that her idea of a society that's MAN VS WOMAN, really doesn’t account for trans people at all. There is a man who has the superpower, which I thought was her talking about a trans man. But no. It’s just that he has a genetic disfunction. How could she not address this? at all? The entire book is just an extremely binary way of looking at the world. So yeah…that just sucks.
The book is also written as a historical document written by a man (who in the future is discriminated against, remember) who is writing about a faraway time when men were in power and how they lost it. So, in theory the author could excuse anything by saying it is how the man writing it sees things, and how it is historically perceived. But I will call bullshit right there. I’m sorry there is no excuse for not including a trans and gay perspective into your story since it’s literally such a giant part of what you are writing about. If you have read The Power and you are reading this text post (very unlikely) and want to tell me your opinions, I’d be very interested. Never has a book made me feel so many conflicting things.
Tumblr media
Sweet and Bitter Magic - Adrienne Tooley
This YA book was less good. It had a compelling idea behind it. But it just didn't pan out that good in my opinion. Honestly I’m surprised I finished it. YA WLW story about a girl who is really powerful but has been cursed not to love, and another girl who is like a magic source, and they go on a little adventure.

omg your teacher!spencer HC got me thinking and imagine a school AU where all the characters are different teachers
hotch is the principal
spencer could be a high school chemistry teacher or an elementary teacher (honestly he could teach anything he wants lol)
jj is an elementary teacher
derek is a coach
emily is a languages teacher
and so on...
OOOH YAH (teacher!spencer hc here) were gonna say this is like a K-12 school just because...
Hotch: total principal, are you kidding? no other character has ever principaled quite as hard; comes off very boring and stern, but has a huge soft spot for the trouble makers and is lowkey an amazing mentor; runs one of those young gentlemen’s groups where he teaches them how to tie their ties and shit; coaches the debate team; travels to all the classrooms throughout the year as a guest reader and is surprisingly great at story voices
Gideon: chaotic AP that actually doesn’t really help at all— half the time Hotch isn’t even sure where he is; usually letting kids get away with shit because he thought it was pretty clever; helps with the senior prank
Rossi: replaces Gideon as AP when he retires and doesn’t do much better; always in his office; when kids get in trouble they have to come to him first— only the most severe offenses go to Hotch— so he deals with a lot of kids who get caught with like cigs or other contraband and always “confiscates” it; the kids love him bc he’s hilarious and also bc he knows a lot of pop culture that they’re into
Derek: could go either way for me— either he’s the gym teacher who takes it a little too seriously, OR he’s the English teacher who uses Nas and Tupac in his poetry unit; either way, definitely coaches after school; he’s a favorite among the kids for sure— he jokes around constantly, has a secret handshake for every kid; talks to them on their level, and always lets them play games at the end of the day (around the world, heads up seven up, etc)
Spencer: already talked about this in my hc but he’s just the best teacher; not afraid to be a total weirdo/goofball; very conscious and supportive of different learning styles and preferences; has the most ambient classroom; his students are always the smartest in the whole damn building because he reads up on every single teaching strategy and knows how to utilize them to best support his kids
JJ: elementary teacher for sure; she’s a Pinterest/IG teacher thru and thru— like her classroom is aesthetically perfect (organized, labeled, color-coded) and she probably has an essential oil diffuser or something; she definitely plays with the kids at recess— either kicking the soccer ball around, playing tag, jumping rope, or just laying in the grass and chatting in the sunshine
Penelope: she replaces the stuffy old tech teacher who spent 5 weeks forcing everyone to learn intermediate excel; at first the kids are like 👀 because Penny G is bright— but on the first day she has them all design their own websites and everyone immediately loves her; teaches them to code; runs an after school “tech club” which is literally just hacking skills 101
Emily: absolutely the languages teacher; also, a hot mess; the complete opposite of JJ— her classroom is literally just the furniture that was provided by the school and like three posters that JJ forced her to hang up bc “jesus Em it looks like a prison in here.” the kids don’t really care— they love her bc she just gets them and she’s always got snacks; also regales them with stories and pictures from all of her travel and years abroad; definitely organizes and chaperones various Europe trips and exchange student programs
Tara: the teacher that does not give a single fuck about what anyone thinks about her style abd methods; teaches some type of social science, maybe sociology; loves her kids and knows they can handle tough/weighty conversations; facilitates many debates and mostly manages to stay neutral; kids hang out in her classroom after school; definitely teaches older kids; very sarcastic with them and they love it
Luke: socially a himbo, academically a nerd; teaches chemistry and makes it super accessible and easy to grasp; always eating in the lab even though it’s against his own rules; his favorite day of the year is the ice cream in a bag day; brings Roxy to work with him occasionally and the kids are obsessed
Matt: definitely teaches some type of history or social studies; always has coffee (he has five kids of his own, he’s exhausted); he’s really into the presidents for some reason and knows like all kinds of random facts about them (like the Taft bathtub fiasco and that Zachary Taylor shat himself to death); coaches cross country or swimming and won’t shut up about it
Stephen: the guidance counselor; literally just the nicest human on the planet; will let you sit in his office and cry any time; writes extremely heartfelt recommendation letters for college apps; has a candy drawer and a collection of stress balls
Blake: definitely everyone’s teacher mom; genuinely loves and cares for every student and they keep in touch with her after they graduate; also teaches English and she and Derek are BFF; they run a literary magazine club after school and do a slam poetry night in the cafeteria; gets a lot of “you changed the course of my life” letters
Kate: the cool teacher; she’s an adult, but she’s still in the know about everything the kids like; has a fun teacher Tik Tok account; uses her clout with the kids to influence their decision making aka gets all the gossip so that she can surreptitiously counsel and educate her kids about being safe and advocating for themselves— in online/social media spaces and beyond

Author’s Notes: A little fic for Valentine’s Day! Thank you to my friend @kwaj05, the “Prompt-Giver” and my personal editor LOL.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Belvoire’s campus buzzed with anticipation. It was only a few days before Valentine’s Day, but students already made plans to woo their classmates or planned grand gestures for the people they were with. Even the quietest of students absorbed the campus’s lively energy, acting more extroverted than ever. Maybe it was just being overtly friendly or being flirtatious, but everyone felt the effects of the holiday spirit.
Luna was no exception. As an intelligent, witty, attractive young woman, she was often hit on by both male and female classmates. But the stunner only had eyes on one particular woman, a certain stuffy professor. So when people flirted with her, she often nodded politely, or smiled and turned away. The lack of interest she expressed was received by her admirers, who disappointedly backed off.
~
It was the day before Valentine’s Day, and students piled into Professor Kingsley’s ample classroom. They came in pairs, chatting lively with their lovers.
The class started quite uneventfully. Ina watched as Luna took her seat, flashing a knowing smile as Luna nodded back at her. Then Ina began her lecture, which very suitably was about the power dynamics between couples. Ina knew that some of her students had tuned her out, but every time she looked on at Luna, she was met with a piercing pair of eyes. And this was satisfactory enough to her. Each time, she would smile to herself, motivated to continue lecturing.
And right before she was going to let the class work on their own, a soft knock at the door was heard.
“Professor Kingsley? I have a package for you,” a voice rang out.
“Hmm,” Ina hummed. She hadn’t been expecting a delivery. Maybe it was a romantic gesture from Luna.
Ina got up and opened the door. Nosey students stretched their necks out to see what was the mysterious package, Luna included. Luna had absolutely no idea what Ina could have gotten. She was more lowkey, a person who wanted to keep her private life, private. She’d celebrate with Ina on their own terms, and found no need to plan huge public gestures.
It was much to Luna’s surprise when the delivery man presented her with a teddy bear, chocolates and a bouquet of red roses. The gift was left anonymous and Ina thought she knew who had given it to her.
What... Luna thought. Red roses? That was her and Ina’s flower to each other. It carried a heavy weight, especially after the sabbatical ordeal.
Luna was uncharacteristically not having it. But a wolf-whistle from several of the frat boys in her class brought her out of her stupor. Is this was jealousy feels like? she thought. But I’m not a jealous person!
“Damn Prof! I see you,” Ford commented.
Luna did a quick glance around the room. Everyone around her was smiling, and to not look like an outlier, Luna put on her best fake smile. Meanwhile, Ina smiled sheepishly at the boys’ wolf-whistle and Ford’s comment. She gave Luna a quick glance, one that lasted merely a quarter of a second. Had she really given Luna a good look, she would have been able to tell something was wrong. But Ina’s quick glimpse at Luna’s faux demeanor made her assume that the sender was in fact her girlfriend.
Ina smiled to herself and subsequently wrapped up class. Today she was teaching back-to-back classes, and Ina made sure that Luna was well-aware she wouldn’t be able to lag behind to avoid them being caught. Quickly, Ina was left with an empty classroom. Everyone had places to go and people to see. Though she found it odd that Luna hadn’t even acknowledged her on her way out, Ina didn’t think much of it.
~
“Baby, I’m home!” Ina called out.
Night had fallen quickly. Ina had a faculty meeting that seemed to last hours. Dean Steinhelm had droned on again, and many of the professors fought to stay awake. Despite a relatively boring meeting, Ina had noticed that Professor Alvarez was looking at her every so often. As the newest addition to the sociology department, Professor Alvarez had worked closely with Ina. Ina once was the new teacher in Belvoire’s human science school, and she knew how isolating the experience could be. Ina took Alvarez under her wing, like a sort of mentor, despite their age difference of only a few years.
Ina walked into the office, and put down her work bags. She then strolled into the bedroom, where she found Luna sprawled on the bed doing homework. Ina stood leaning in the doorway, drinking Luna up.
“Are you gonna greet me or just stand in the doorway like a brooding loner?” Luna said, without looking up from her laptop.
“I do not brood,” Ina said, finally shuffling towards the bed.
“You so do,” Luna replied coldly.
Brr! Ina thought. Luna’s tone was slightly reprimanding, leaving Ina concerned. She seemed fine during class...“Lu, are you okay?”
“Hmm. Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just tired,” Luna sighed.
The hours that passed between the class and now had calmed Luna down. Sometimes it would cross her mind and she’d feel a sense of jealousy wash over her. Luna hadn’t considered herself a jealous person, but with Ina it was different. There was just something about her. But then Luna realized that she was being unreasonably jealous. Ina was by far the most popular professor, and one of those stupid frat boys probably sent her that gift. And then she’d laugh because she knew the frat boys would never have a chance with Ina. This vigorous cycle repeated itself, but eventually she’d felt relieved. Ina was hers.
Ina crawled into bed, wrapping Luna in her arms. “Hey, thanks for the gift today in class,” Ina whispered into Luna’s ear.
And again, Luna felt jealousy course through her, “Ina, that wasn’t-”
“The mysterious aspect of it was quite hot. But it was also swee-” Ina said letting out a hot breath.
“Ina! That wasn’t me!” Luna exclaimed.
“Oh. So...who was that then?” Ina asked quizzically.
“I have absolutely no idea.”
“Does my secret admirer bother you?”
“Not really. I know you’re mine and I’m yours.” Luna’s jealousy fluctuated often, but she didn’t want Ina to feel bad about the present. Ina had no control over who found her attractive. I mean, come on. Ina was just drop dead gorgeous.
“I’m glad. A couple of my relationships...have deteriorated because of jealousy. I don’t need that extra drama in my life,” Ina said.
Now Luna really didn’t want to bring up her varying jealousy. She turned away from Ina, and Ina fell asleep holding Luna.
~
Hours passed by. It was almost four in the morning, and Luna was still wide-awake. She tried so hard to not feel jealous - that was so unlike her - but something wasn’t sitting right with this whole secret admirer thing. Ina shifted in her sleep, pulling away from Luna.
“Ina?” Luna asked.
“Sorry, did I wake you?” Ina turned to Luna.
“No, I’ve been up.”
“Why?” Ina shifted to check the time “Jesus Lu, it’s almost four!”
“I...” Luna began.
“What is it?”
“I know you didn’t want me to be jealous and normally I’m not but I don’t know, something feels off. I know it’s not your fault, but the red roses are our thing and I-”
Luna’s rambling was cut off by a forehead kiss.
“It’s okay. I know I’d feel jealous,” Ina admitted. “It’s cute that you’re a little jealous. But I’m yours. And yours only.”
Luna sighed in relief.
“Is this why you’ve been acting weird?” Ina asked.
“I guess. Sometimes I feel jealous, but other times I know that it’s always been us. Not anyone else. My feelings have changed every couple moments.”
Ina gave her another forehead kiss.
“It’s only you,” Ina smiled while Luna leaned in for a kiss. The jealousy she felt dissipated. Their relationship had only been strengthened by the secret admirer. The two broke out into raucous laughter. It was a weird situation, but they had gotten through another hurdle together.
“Who do you think sent it? ‘Cause I think we need to have a little chat,” Luna said, cracking her knuckles in a fake overprotective nature.
Ina laughed, but racked her brain.
“Do you think it was a frat boy?” Luna hummed.
Ina shook her head. “Gifts from those students tend to be more...flamboyant and never anonymous.” Ina recalled getting serenaded by the football team on various occasions.
Finally, Ina gasped. “Oh my god...it’s Professor Alvarez!”
“The new professor of sociology?!” Luna laughed.
“Yes! Just because I was being nice to her doesn’t mean I was hitting on her!” Ina followed. “Wait...she’s married...to a man. Hold on! She mentioned she was going to send me a gift for helping her adjust to Belvoire. That’s why she was looking at me in the faculty meeting. She wanted to see if I figured out it was her! The cheap ass! I guess that’s what was on sale because of Valentine’s Day.”
“What’s your definition of nice to her? Because being nice to a friend is different than being nice to your girlfriend.” Luna whispered in Ina’s ear, her hot breath hitching Ina’s own breath.
“Come here so I can show you what nice is,” Ina said, straddling Luna’s hips.
~
Luna woke up to the smell of something pleasant. That can’t be Ina, she thought. She threw on a satin robe and walked to the kitchen. Her jaw dropped.
“Ina! You didn’t burn your apartment down?” Luna snickered.
Ina rolled her eyes, but didn’t turn around. “I have to focus!” she said, pointing at the iPad next to her. It was playing a very detailed video about cooking eggs and bacon. “Go back to bed.”
“Aww, breakfast in bed?” Luna smiled.
“Mhm,” Ina hummed back. “Now go before I actually burn my place down.”
“Simp,” Luna said under her breath, turning to return to the bedroom.
“I heard that!” Ina laughed.
Ina came with two plates of bacon and eggs in her hands.
“I know you felt off after yesterday, but Happy Valentine’s Day, my love,” Ina said. “I’m yours, and yours only. Also, I didn’t want to buy anything because Valentine’s Day is the epitome of a capitalism-”
She was cut off by Luna reaching up and kissing her forehead.
“Babe, I’ve heard this rant before. You’re such a nerd, but I love you,” she said pointing at her lips. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
Ina put the plates down, kissing Luna with everything in her.

I made the sides human and (mostly) not white bc making them white as humans is boring. Anyways little things and facts about them under the cut. You can ask more shit about them if you want to, this was just for fun.
Patton Picani
I made him a Picani for the fun of it.
He’s mostly based off of Terrance Patton because he was cute and bouncy.
The little bracelets he has are friendship bracelets for Logan and Virgil. He also has one for Roman and a very old one for Remus.
Oldest out of the bunch (for the sake of this post, I’m making it highschool wise cause that’s easier for me) he’s 18.
Parents are divorced and spoil the ever loving shit out of him.
He doesn’t know what he wants to do for a living but he does know he wants to be a dad.
Logan Rey
He’s mostly based off Raymond from ACNH just cause.
Before I put the glasses on his bust shot, he looked like a rich white boy that would call you a slur. Thank god he looks better now.
Second oldest also at 18.
Has a single mom that’s always working to keep them a float and no dad.
Ofc he wants to be a fucking teacher. Specifically a English teacher cause the gay dream.
Roman Prince
Don’t let the letterman’s jacket fool you, he’s in theater, choir, and art club.
Also hella closeted.
He’s half Latino (specifically Cuban) cause I like those human headcanons of him being Latino.
He’s 17 and about 2 minutes older than Remus.
Has ADHD, but isn’t diagnosed cause he was seen as a gifted child while Remus was diagnosed because he was a problem child.
Parents are together but Catholic and strict as shit.
Baby wants to be an actor but shit terrified to tell his parents that.
Remus Prince
He was the longest to fucking do. Why did I put so much effort into his clothes.
Anyways he’s pretty much the family disappointment, gay punk rat.
He would also be in all the things Roman is in, but he got kicked out of them all for being too crude and chaotic.
Only friend is Janus (used to be all of them, but they kinda abandoned him once he started acting like that).
Wants to be an artist. Specifically a surrealist artist.
Virgil Shiro
Baby’s Japanese cause idk I saw someone do that and I liked it.
Still an emo fuckwad.
Speaking of baby, he’s the youngest at 16.
Besides Remus, he’s my favorite design cause of all the different shade of black and purple.
I tried designing his hoodie to look like the merch hoodie but I didn’t bother looking it up.
Has two moms!! His mom had him with a man but then realized that she’s a lesbian and married Janus’ mom (that’s right their siblings).
Has no idea what he wants to be and has a crisis over it constantly.
Janus Bennett
White boy number two behind Logan.
I gave him the port wine stain birthmark instead of vitiligo like a lot of other people do cause idk it’s something I don’t see for him.
He’s also trans because I will always make Janus trans in stories where he’s not a side.
Meaning his mother didn’t pick the name of a two-faced god for her two-faced child, that was Janus’ idea.
Oh, and he’s the third oldest in front of Roman and Remus by a few months.
He also wants to get into ethics and sociology cause he’s a nerd.

The Traveler's Masterlist
Tumblr media
“Amai, it’s great to hear from you!” You said, sitting back and sipping a coffee. You were typing up reports at your desk when she called. “God, it’s been forever since we last spoke. How are Yenuno and the children?”
You were surprised to get a call from your old friend while you were working overseas. You and Amai had gone to college together, and while she was getting a law degree in civil rights, you were studying anthropology. You were both in fields specializing in non-humans, which is why you were studying together.
There was a college that offered specific studies in exology, or the study of non-human sentient life, Exanian University. It provided classes in medicine, law, sociology, politics, cultural exo-anthropology, and many other subjects that focused solely on non-humans.
It was established in the early 1890’s and originally only taught humans about the nine Established races. The Established were allowed to attend school in the 50’s, and during the Neogon rights movement in the 80’s, the campus and curriculum was expanded to included education on the newer races that had begun to emerge as well as open its doors to non-humans. In addition, they began to petition and encourage other colleges to offer exological studies. Many alumni of E.U. were now teaching exological studies at other colleges.
You were now a research professor for E.U., studying newly emerged races and reaching out to those shy about integrating. When you first started your career, Amai and the firm where she worked would often help draw up protection papers for the new races until they were formally recognized as a Neogon race and therefore protected under the Neogon act, which granted them the same rights as humans and the Established. Though, as time went on, new races were much rarer, and you hadn’t needed their services. The surprise call was the first time you’d spoken in months, and you hadn’t seen her face-to-face in eight years.
“They’re well, thank you!” She said. “Whereabouts are you these days?”
“Portugal,” You replied. “We’ve had reports that the Encante people may actually exist, and we’ve been attempting to locate and make contact with them. Unfortunately, because they’re underwater creatures, they’re ability to shapeshift, and their reputation as seducers in the mythology of the region, it hasn’t been an easy task. Although, several people in the local villages claim to have Encantado ancestry, so we’re running blood tests to determine the legitimacy of that claim. If they’re blood comes back with unidentified DNA, we can start the protected race process. I assume that’s why you’re calling? You must have heard the news from Song. I sent him an email about drawing up papers a few days ago.”
“He did tell me, yes, and that’s wonderful news,” She replied. “But that’s actually not why I’m calling.”
“Oh?” You’re head rocked back, surprised. “To what do I owe the pleasure, then?”
“Well,” She sighed heavily. “The older children are at the developmental stage enough now where they should begin school, and the younger ones could use some help with supplemental skills. But both Yenuno and Dr. Halvorg don’t think putting them in a normal school a good idea, so I’ve been outvoted. At the very least, they need a tutor. I’ve done what I can on my own, but I’m not a very good teacher. At least, not for fifteen children. Soon to be eighteen, actually.”
“You’re carrying a new clutch?” You said, excited. “That’s wonderful! Yenuno must be very happy.”
“He is, and so am I,” She said, sounding please but tired. “Although we think this might be the last one. My body isn’t recovering as quickly as it used to and Yenuno worries about my health.”
“Understandable. So why did you call me?”
“Well, Yenuno doesn’t know anything about the educational system, having grown up in the wild, and Dr. Halvorg wants to hire some stuffy colleague of his who will bore the kids into a drooling stupor. Halvorg won’t accept anything less than the best, which I mean… I guess it’s nice that he wants the kids to have nothing but the utmost quality, I just wish he wasn’t so damn rigid. He needs to get laid, honestly,” She huffed, and you stifled a laugh. “Do you have someone you could recommend?”
“To get him laid?”
She snorted. “No! You know what I mean. Do you think any of your colleagues at the university would be interested in educating the children of a rare, endangered race? That’s got to have appeal to you academic types, right?”
“Hmm,” You hummed, sitting back in your chair and contemplating. “I’m not sure. You know, it occurs to me that I’ve never even met your children. Or your husband, for that matter.” You sat up and looked at your calendar. “You know what? I’m due for a vacation. Why don’t I come back state-side and meet all of your little ones? I can get a better idea of who would be a good fit for them. I know several people in early education who could be great for tutoring a large group of children at different development levels.”
“Ah, you’re a lifesaver, thank you so much,” Amai said. “I’ll owe you one big time.”
“Just find me a man and we’ll call it even,” You said, laughing. “I’ll text you when my schedule frees up and we’ll make some plans.”
Tumblr media
Two weeks later, you stepped off the plane of the airport in Coleville and rented a car. Willowridge was an out of the way town that had the E.U. campus where you and Amai had gone to school. It was a little bit of a drive from the city to get there, but Coleville had the closest airport.
You arrived at the research facility sometime around mid-afternoon, greeted out front by Amai and her youngest child, Yenu. Yenu was a 50/50 hybrid between naga and human, which was unheard of; all other hybrids were a 95/5 percent split since the males both created and fertilized the eggs. Females were simply incubators in the breeding process. Yenu was a curious mix between Amai and her father, from her stubby little legs to her long snake tail and the blue scales running down her neck and back. From an academic perspective, it’s no wonder this Dr. Halvorg was so keen on keeping her and her siblings in the facility for study.
On the other hand, she was adorable, and the entire world needed to know about it. You wondered how many specialists actually knew about her existence and why there wasn’t more published about her in scientific literature. You’re fairly sure there was only one article based on her, and it was authored by Dr. Halvorg. They were likely keeping her under strict protections until she was older, to spare her the media circus.
“It’s so good to see you!” You said as you scooped her into a hug. Her belly wasn’t big yet, but you could feel it’s hardness against your own belly. Yenu squealed happily in her arms as you squished the two of them.
“You, too!” She said, kissing your cheek. “How was the drive?”
“Scenic, as always,” You said, following her as she went inside. “I got the email from Dr. Halvorg last night about accommodations. You’re right: he’s a little abrupt, but in all honestly I’ve yet to meet a geneticist that isn’t.”
“Believe it or not, he’s way less uptight than he used to be. The children really help lighten him up.”
“He likes kids?” You said, your opinion of him rising slightly.
“Oh, very much,” She said, then her voice lowered to a sad whisper. “He can’t have any children, apparently. His kind are bad breeders, he says.”
“His kind?”
“He’s part fae,” She replied.
“Oh,” You said, frowning. “That’s odd.”
“What is?”
“Well, I’m part fae, too, and I have three brothers. And I know of several subraces of fae that are prolific breeders, several of which I helped integrate myself. Exogenetics is still an evolving science. Perhaps he has been so focused on his current work that he hasn’t checked recent literature in the field. He’s been working in conservation for several decades, didn’t you say? I’ll make some calls and see what I can find.”
“I forgot you were part fae,” She said thoughtfully. “What subrace are you, again?”
“Russian Bereginya,” You replied. “What is he?”
“I’ve never asked,” She said. “He very rarely talks about himself at all. Honestly, it seems like a sore subject with him, so I’ve never brought it up. Even Yenuno seems hesitant to ask, and he gets along better with Dr. Halvorg than I do. The only reason I know his first name is because I’ve seen it on official reports. Only the children are allowed to say it, even if it’s to call him ‘Uncle Maël’.”
“A hard nut to crack, huh?” You asked as she led you into the public lobby and fished out a personnel I.D. badge.
“You could say that,” She said. “He and I don’t always see eye to eye, at least.” She swiped her card in a card slot and pressed her thumb on the printpad. “I’ve got a temporary I.D. waiting for you in the back. It’ll be good for the next two weeks. Let me know if you decide to stay longer, and I’ll have the expiration extended.”
“Sure, thanks,” You said.
“You’re about to meet the man himself,” She said as she walked though an automatic sliding door. “Plus my man, and my children. You remember their names?”
You nodded. “It’ll take me a while to match names to faces, though. You always were an overachiever.”
She laughed.
The two of you walked into what looked like the receiving room of a warehouse, except it was empty. There was a large, rolling aluminum wall that was raised and led to a forested area outside. There was an enclosed greenhouse type thing that had several nests built, as well as a cottage at the far end.
Each little nest had a small body with blue scales and warm almond skin lying in it, curled up into a coil, eyes closed and breathing softly. The cottage at the far end also had a movable wall, which was up, and a large, blue naga with long, straight, black hair and pale skin was sitting there, typing on a laptop that was perched on a standing desk.
“Yenuno is a bit socially shy, so he connects with others through the internet,” Amai whispered. “It’s about as much social interaction with the outside world as he can tolerate sometimes.”
“It must be naptime,” You whispered back, nodding toward the kids.
She laughed softly. “The older ones only need to eat once a day now, depending on the size of their prey, and they get tired after hunting and feeding, so we schedule it for noon. They should be up soon, though.”
She waved her hand to get Yenuno’s attention. He looked up and smiled, closing the laptop. He slithered down the ramp, over to Amai to plant a kiss on her lips, and then took Yenu in his arms, tossing her up once to make her giggle before squishing her in a big hug and blowing a raspberry into her cheek. Amai shushed him.
“Let’s go to the lounge to talk,” Amai said quietly. “Yenuno, this is my friend I told you about, the professor from E.U.”
“It’s nice to meet you finally,” Yenuno said as the three--no, four--of you went to a sitting area nearby. Half of the room had chairs and a couch, while the other side had cushions with a table in between. “Amai has told me many stories about you.”
“Most of them are true,” You said, sitting. “But I won’t say which.”
He laughed and set Yenu on the floor in front of him, watching her carefully as she scooted her way across the carpet. “Dr. Halvorg will be around soon. He usually talks to the children after their naps about their hunting experiences.”
“Jeez, I thought I was a workaholic,” You said. “Does he ever relax?”
“Not that I’ve ever seen,” Amai said, handing you a cup of coffee from the bar behind the couch. “If he’s awake, he’s in research mode. He even works through meals.”
“Well, I’ll hope he’ll make some time so I can discuss the children’s developments with him.”
“Oh, if it’s for the kids, he’ll make time,” Yenuno replied. “He’s practically adopted them.”
“I swear, if he thought he could get away with it, he’d forge our signatures on adoption papers,” Amai said sardonically.
“Speak of the devil,” Yenuno said, jerking his head at the open loading space near the greenhouse. A man stood there, surveying the sleeping children for a moment before heading over to the lounge area. He was thin and tall with long, white-blonde hair in a sleek braid down his back. He was pale complected and had a sharp, angular face with bushy eyebrows and vivid, amber colored eyes. His ears had a definitive point to them.
Yep, definitely Celtic fae heritage; you could spot it a mile away. It’s true that the Celtic fae populace had dwindled over the years, though you hadn’t really considered why. You chalked it up to interbreeding with other races or being edged out of their territory. Historically, since fae were immortal, or at least very long lived, they often didn’t feel the biological incentive that mortal creatures felt to procreate. Could their long-held disinterest in breeding have eventually rendered them infertile? That was a startling thought.
“Is this the professor I’ve heard so much about?” Dr. Halvorg asked as he approached. Yenu toddled her way over to him on her short little legs and he picked her up, popping her onto his hip like a pro.
“Yes,” Amai said and introduced you. Dr. Halvorg used his free hand to shake yours.
“Lovely to meet you,” He said. “I look forward to working with you. You have an impressive reputation. I’ve actually been following your progress for quite a while.”
“Really?” You asked, surprised.
“Oh, yes,” He replied, shifting a squealing Yenu to the opposite hip. “You’re the foremost anthropologist in the field currently. You and your team are responsible for integrating over thirty percent of known Neogon races in the last ten years. As a geneticist, as a scientist, seeing the steady expansion and confirmation of known non-human races happen in my lifetime is pretty incredible to watch.”
“Wow,” You said, stunned. “I didn’t realize I had such a reputation.”
“Well, you’ve been in the field for a long time,” He said with a smile. “It’s not surprising that you might not be aware of the impact your work has had on the world.”
You may have blushed, but you’d never have admitted it. Thankfully you were spared from finding a way to follow up that statement by a range of sleepy groans issuing from the enclosure. One by one, the children began to stretch and yawn and make their way over to their parents, the first of which was one of the youngest.
“Mommy!” He said, his curly hair bouncing as he slithered over the lip of the carpeted lounge area. “Who’s that?” He pointed directly at me.
“Osan, it’s not polite to point!” She said sharply. “This is my friend who I told you was coming to meet all of you. Wait for your brothers and sisters to get over here before we start introductions, okay?”
Osan shot across the enclosure to rudely awaken the rest of his siblings. His excited hollering echoed throughout the empty enclosure.
“Ah, youth. I’d love to siphon some of that energy and drink it like an espresso,” Amai said.
“Girl, I hear that,” You replied, chuckling.
A small army of nearly identical naga children came following Osan, curious about you, chattering and craning their necks to get a better look at you.
“Kids, line up, line up,” Yenuno said, wading out into the sea of small clones of himself. “These are the five year olds: Keenai, Tani, Fuma, and Amaia. The four year olds: Nenish, Tahara, and Sadji. The three year olds: Jinsa, Ishni, Chidil, Itheti, and Dashu. The two year olds: Osan and Khuzho. And little Yenu is eight months old.”
“I don’t know how you tell them all apart,” You laughed.
“I have a mole!” Sadji said, pointing at it. “See!”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” You said, bending down to pat his head. He shook off your hand but laughed. You tickled his chubby cheek and he giggled, trying to fend you off.
“So what would you like to do?” Amai said. “I assume you already have a plan.”
“Yes,” You said. “I’d like to interview each child with a behavioral therapist and get a sense of their development levels myself, and then Dr. Halvorg and I will compare notes. I can make my determination then.”
“Sounds good,” Amai replied. “But it doesn’t have to be today, does it? You just got into town. I’d love to take you out for an early dinner, if you haven’t eaten. Yenuno hunted with the kids, so he likely won’t eat again until morning.”
“Sure, I’d love to,” You said. “Dr. Halvorg, do you have dinner plans?”
“Oh, no, I have a lot of work to do,” He said. “Besides, I’m sure the two of you will want to catch up. Please, enjoy yourselves. If you all would excuse me, I have a report to write.” He kissed Yenu on the cheek before handing her back to Amai and tousled a few of the kids’ hair as he passed. “Come along, children. Let’s do our interviews and I’ll take you all out to the playground.”
The kids cheered and followed him down the hall to the offices.
“You weren’t lying, Amai, he is really good with kids,” You said.
“Between him and the volunteers, we never have to hire a babysitter, which is nice,” Yenuno replied.
“Some days, it’s his only redeeming feature,” Amai said with a sour smile. “I still haven’t quite forgiven him for what happened when I was pregnant with Yenu. If I sit too long, thinking about it, I get mad all over again.”
“Think of the eggs, my love,” Yenuno said patiently, patting her belly. “He’s apologized many times since then. You can’t hold a grudge forever.”
“I absolutely can,” She said churlishly. “I understand his job is conserving and repopulating your species, but our marriage is an entirely separate thing and he can keep his nose out of it.”
“Well, let’s get a cheesecake and forget all about it,” You suggested.
“Sound good to me,” She said. She kissed Yenuno on the lips and waved goodbye to him. “There’s a new Italian place that’s got really good reviews.”
“No seafood! Or wine!” Yenuno called after her.
“This ain’t my first rodeo!” She called back.
Tumblr media
The Italian place was as good as Amai said it was, and the two of you went to Tumble’s Cafe for dessert and coffee. Tumble had actually been a client of Amai’s when a hate crime had been committed against him. Now his wife and kids had two shops open in town and were doing very well for themselves.
Lucy, Tumble’s wife, was a few years your junior and a mother of three. Amai and Lucy had become close friends over the years and they were both in an interspecies mommy group. You knew of her, since you’d both grown up in the same small town, but you hadn’t actually met her before. Amai told you that the triplets often played with her children at the park, and you had to stop for a moment and contemplate the strange image of bunnies and snakes playing together.
“Is this the professor?” Lucy asked as you came in with Amai.
“Did you tell the whole town I was coming?” You asked Amai.
“I didn’t need to,” Amai replied with a laugh. “Word gets around.”
“What can I get you guys?” Lucy asked, a big smile on her freckled face.
“Coffee and cheesecake to go, please,” You said.
“Oh, no coffee for me,” Amai interjected. “Can I have a decaf iced cinnamon chai instead?”
“You got it. Whipped cream on top?”
“Yes, please. Where’s Tumble?”
“Putting the kids to bed upstairs,” Lucy said. “Such a good daddy. We’re talking about having more.”
“More than three?” You asked as she handed you a steaming cup of coffee. “I can’t imagine having more than two, at the most.”
“I guess it comes with having a non-human partner who’s used to the idea of having many children,” Lucy said, nodding at Amai, who tilted her head in agreement. “Not all non-humans have litters or clutches, but the ones who do always want more kids. At least the girls are in school now andTumble gave me a good five years before asking for another litter, unlike supermom over here. How’s that going on your end, by the way?”
“That’s why the professor is here,” Amai said, bumping you slightly with her shoulder. “She just got in today. The evaluations start tomorrow.”
“Well, good luck.” She handed you a box that contained two generous slices of cheesecake.
“Thanks, Lucy,” Amai said as the two of you left. “I’m sure I’ll be back in here soon. Tumble’s pastries are the best in town.”
“I’ll tell him you said that!” Lucy said with a laugh, waving.
Tumblr media
The next morning, you began setting up for the individual assessments when Dr. Halvorg entered the room.
“Good morning,” You said. “Are you observing with the behavioral specialist?”
“I am the behavioral specialist,” He said. “I have a PhDs in child psychology and clinical psychology.”
“How many degrees do you have?” You asked, impressed.
“A few,” He admitted. “I’ve been alive for quite a long time, so I go back every once in a while to get another, or for a refresher. The education for each degree is much different now than it was fifty years ago.”
“How old are you?” You asked. “I know you’re part fae.”
“Amai told you that, eh?”
“Maybe,” You replied. “I mean, I’m part fae, too, so it’s not like I’m bothered by it.”
“You are?” He asked, looking at you keenly. “That wasn’t in your dossier. European?”
“Russian, and it’s not really a secret. I’m surprised you didn’t already know; I figured Amai would have said something. I was actually thinking you and I should have a conversation about that.”
He looked at you with an indecipherable expression and opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, one of the eldest children came in the door.
“Later,” He said. You nodded.
The evaluations were interesting. The children were advanced for their ages, though Dr. Halvorg told you that was normal among nagas, who had to mature quickly in the wild. Watching them problem solve during the assessment was actually fascinating. They grasped new concepts relatively quickly and were wildly curious. They actually seemed happy to learn new and unusual things and kept asking you about your work with new races. You imagined they got a lot of that exuberance from Amai. Yenuno seemed a great deal more anxious and withdrawn.
The assessments took the entire day, and Dr. Halvorg asked you back to his office to compare notes when they were done.
“I think Ishni is slightly behind the others in his age group, or rather his brothers are more advanced. Honestly, it’s hard to tell with nagas. Their development is so unusual.”
“I would agree,” Dr. Halvorg said. “With Ishni being behind, that is. But it’s nothing some focused work won’t fix. The rest of them are advancing well, based on the available statistics for their age groups.”
“Yes, it’s shocking how quickly they pick up new things. I wouldn’t be surprised if they completed a full curriculum in just a few years.”
“Based on today’s evaluations, do you have a candidate in mind who would work for them?” He asked.
You sighed heavily. “I do,” You said. “I actually know of several that would be good fits. Unfortunately, all of those people are currently under contract.”
“Oh,” Dr. Halvorg said. “I thought you said you knew someone who would be perfect for this job.”
“I said early development!” You replied. “But these children don’t need early development. That’s shapes and colors and numbers and things like that. All of these kids can already read. Even the two year olds! They need more advanced tutelage, and I didn’t realize that when Amai first asked.”
“So what would you recommend?”
You sat back in your chair. “Give me a few days to think it over and make some calls and I’ll get back to you. In the meantime, just go about things as normal. I’d like to observe how things run here naturally.”
“Is that in reference to the search for an educator?”
“No, it’s for my own personal observations,” You said, smiling. “I am still an exo-anthropologist, after all, and quite honestly, the last couple of days have been riveting.”
He grinned. “A woman after my own heart.”
Tumblr media
Two nights later, you walked into the enclosure after dinner to a strange sight: Dr. Halvorg reading the kids a bedtime story. He was sitting on the ground in the circle of nests and reading from a big book of non-human fairy tales. Race appropriate ones, of course. It was so unusual that all you could do was lean against the doorframe and listen.
When he finished, he helped settle all of the children and wished them a good night, and set the lights to starlight, with little pinpricks of light shining through the ceiling. When he saw you, he walked over.
“So, no good,” You said. “There aren’t any teachers who can come in on short notice.”
He sighed unhappily. “Well, what now?”
“I’ve decided that until they make contact with the Encante people, I’m not needed, so I might as well make the most of my time here and be the kids’ tutor until I need to go back or a teacher is made available.”
“Really?” Dr. Halvorg said, surprised. “Well, the kids like you, and you’re certainly well-educated. Have you ever taught before?”
“Briefly at E.U.,” You replied. “I taught one year of anthropology. It was nice staying in one place for a while, and the students seemed receptive to me. I only left because I was needed for a first contact situation.” You looked around. “Where’s Yenuno and Amai?”
“Date night,” He said. “They’re off… doing whatever people do on dates these days. I haven’t dated in decades, so I’m not certain what that entails anymore.”
“I could fix that, if you like,” You offered.
He smiled, but tilted his head. “How do you mean?”
“You could go on a date with me,” You said. “Since I’m going to be staying a while and working with you, it’ll be nice to get to know you better. And… maybe more than that.”
He looked like you’d hit him with a brick. He was still smiling confusedly, but his mouth was open and he couldn’t seem to speak.
“You okay there?” You asked.
“Ye--yes,” He stammered. “Forgive me. I… I appreciate the offer, but… I... I, uh…”
“It’s okay to say no, Maël,” You replied, laughing a little. “You don’t have to find an excuse. ‘No’ is a valid answer.”
He laughed a little self-consciously. “I’m sorry. I’ve been married to my work for so long that I just haven’t considered the possibility of dating. It’s… not something I’m interested in. I hope you understand.”
“Of course,” You replied. “That’s completely fine. And if you change your mind, that’s fine too. You know how to get in touch with me. No pressure. We’re both adults, after all.”
“Yes,” He said, adjusting his glasses. “I appreciate that. Thank you for the offer.”
“Think nothing of it,” You said. “I should get back to work. See you tomorrow.”
“Yes,” He repeated. You waved and walked away, unaware of his curious, piercing gaze on your retreating back.

Who becomes a special education teacher?
There is no singular answer to this question. When I volunteered at a school for autistic and otherwise disabled students, each teacher and aide was different. When I volunteered at an ARC adult daycare center, the staff were equally varied in their treatment of the individuals there. But there were some common threads I noticed across both locations, regardless of how different they were on the surface. And there were common threads that tied the teachers & staff together, too.
For the purposes of this post, I will be discussing my observations about the school, not the ARC adult daycare center. Also, before you continue reading, you should know that this essay will discuss suicidal ideation and sexual actions. Now, let’s continue:
Something very interesting I noticed was that the only white man I ever interacted with was the principal of the school. I’m sure there were a few white male teachers, but I never met any. The people who were with me in the aftercare classroom were all women and/or POC. This demographic data didn’t match my own school, which was only 10 minutes away. My own school had extremely few teachers of color, and had a decent amount of white male teachers. But looking back, I recall that the many of the one-on-one aides for the special education students at my school were people of color.
I’m pointing these things out because usually, jobs that women and/or POC do are systemically undervalued in society. Teaching is still seen as “women’s work,” because it’s associated with caretaking. The association with caretaking gets less intense as kids get older, which is why there are a heck of a lot more male secondary school teachers than there are male elementary school teachers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (in the US), only 11% of elementary school teachers are male, whereas 36% of secondary school teachers are.
When you look at the stats on special education teachers as a whole, 86.3% are female (meaning that 13.7% are male). Despite being significantly outnumbered, the average salary for a male special education teacher is $53,855, which is $8,393 more than the average female salary of $45,462.
Then, looking at the statistics for one-on-one aides, things get even more stark. Almost 89% of paraprofessionals are female, and the average female classroom aide makes only $19,927 per year, compared to male classroom aides who make $26,453 per year. Referring to the previous paragraph, notice the significant gap between what the teachers are paid, versus what the aides are paid. There are also many more POC aides than POC special education teachers. Only 16.8% of special education teachers are POC, whereas 24.3% of aides are POC. (I did those calculations based on US census bureau data)
Okay, so we’ve discussed the demographics, the pay gaps, and the racial disparities. Keep in mind that the vast majority of people in these jobs are also neurotypical, and that all of the teachers and aides where I volunteered were neurotypical as well. Now, I’m going to discuss the pervasive ableism and problematic attitudes that existed at the school, keeping in mind all of the sociological factors that have contributed to these people feeling that they are not valued in society for the work that they do.
The culture of the school I worked at was what one might expect. The teachers mostly cared about the students, and were pleasant to talk to. But there were some things I noticed that weren’t particularly pleasant or enjoyable:
Most of the time, the teachers and aides talked about the students in the 3rd person, as if they weren’t in the room. Even if the students in question could speak clearly, they were still treated as though they could not contribute any meaningful input to a conversation. The problem was even worse for students who couldn’t speak. They were all referred to in the 3rd person, discussed by staff, and speculated about without any regard for the fact that they probably understood everything that was being said about them. I tried my very best not to engage in this behavior when spoken to (teachers would try to involve me in their conversations about the students), but in order to mask and protect my position as a volunteer, I couldn’t speak up about the issue or do anything to stop it.
Many of the teachers obviously didn’t want to be there, and didn’t like their jobs. There was one teacher in particular, I don’t remember her name, who would even “joke” about committing suicide right after a student did something mildly disruptive. She would vocally express (right in front of the students!) how much she hated her job, hated herself, and hated her life. She was at least 50 years old, and often turned to me (I was only 17 at the time) to vent and rant in distress about how awful everything was and how much she wished for retirement. This was incredibly uncomfortable to me, and probably very damaging to the students, but it was also something I couldn’t really do anything about given my unofficial status at the school.
Students were not given any intellectually stimulating activities to do in the after school program. This was a particular problem for one autistic student named Matt, who I could tell was bored out of his mind. To quell his boredom, he peeled the paper label off of crayons, peeled the name stickers off of other students’ desks, ripped up pieces of construction paper, stole food from the snack bin and shoveled it into his mouth when the teachers weren’t paying close attention, and masturbated in the middle of the classroom. That last part is something nobody had prepared me for when I started volunteering there. In fact, it seems to be something nobody in the special education world talks about at all. The only other person I’ve talked to about it until now is Laurel. And yes, it caught me off guard. But I very easily understood why all of this was happening- Matt was seeking intense sensory input to replace his boredom.
Sometimes his aide gave him picture books to read out loud, which he did. But when he was finished and said “Done!” his aide just told him to read it again. The only times I had seen him truly happy and engaged were the times that he was allowed to play the keyboard. Matt was an amazingly talented musical artist. I was shocked when I first heard him play- not because he’s autistic, but because the composition he was creating was worthy of being played in Carnegie Hall. During the days he had access to the keyboard, his sensory seeking and anxious behaviors significantly decreased. He sang along to the tune of the songs he created (they were extremely catchy), and chewed on a red chewy that was clipped to his shirt. He didn’t bite his hands, rip up his gloves, or ask to “go to the bathroom.”
Yet, he usually wasn’t allowed to use the keyboard. The reason I overheard was that the music teacher was afraid he would break it. And yes, he did have a history of throwing things during meltdowns, which I witnessed. So it was possible that he might try to throw the keyboard, too. But what nobody except me seemed to understand was that his meltdowns only happened on the days when he wasn’t given access to the keyboard. He was calmest when playing it.
These were the ways that each student was failed. They were treated as less than human, as non-thinking and non-understanding. Teachers spoke openly, in front of the students, about how much they hated their jobs. The knowledge and skills of students were severely underestimated. Students like Matt were not provided with real books, real intellectual challenges, or the ability to fully express themselves creatively.
And quite honestly, not all of that was purely a function of ableism. It was also a function of the socioeconomic status of the teachers, and the ways they were unappreciated, undervalued, and underserved by society at large. When these teachers and aides aren’t given proper tools and resources to understand and assist autistic people, they will inevitably fail. When classrooms don’t have enough books, when teachers have to buy their own art supplies, and when there’s only one keyboard in the entire school, the students aren’t going to get their needs met. When the school is understaffed, people are working overtime to pay for their mortgage, and teachers have to stop meltdowns during their lunch breaks, they’re bound to have negative attitudes about their jobs and lives in general.
The solution to this problem is two-fold: start funding the important work of educating and caring for disabled people, and start creating seminars and workshops for these teachers to learn about disability from the perspective of disabled self-advocates, so that they will be best equipped to serve their students’ needs.
I hope that dream becomes a reality someday.
