Ghost Story from Wondery [This one was intriguing, and I was super shocked to hear actual Hugh Dancy appear in it. It's absolutely what eventually led to me re-trying Hannibal, I just found him charming and smart and introspective and supportive - I would say the last episodes were a bit repetitive - especially with the psychic - but otherwise highly recommend.]

While I appreciate what the author is trying to do, in terms of highlighting the injustice that happens to those who are incarcerated, and the corruption that occurs within the penal system, it was a frustrating read for someone who was trying to learn more about the more practical aspects of prison abolition as a movement.]

hi ok been EVEN more months haha oopsies

Adventure Time Season 8 (Great, but the beginning of a slight downward trend in my enjoyment of the show. it becomes more plot focused than character focused here, and that did make it a bit less fun. still great though)

Loveless - Alice Oseman (I love a lot of her books, and I love this one too! but for some reason it just doesn't strike me as fully satisfying and i don't know why)

Pokemon Firered Omega (SEE???? also i wanted to add romhacks to make it harder)

Adventure Time Season 9 (some really good character moments, but it is even more plot focused here)

Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse - 2018 Film (holy fuck this movie is incredible, maybe just as loved as EEAAO?)

Knives Out - 2019 Film (it's very good, especially because of the family banter and performances. without it's cast it would probably not be so great. though the plotting does come together in the end for me)

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (it's good, but I really love to see the detective/criminal battle of wits in mystery/detective movies and that's really not what this movie is)

Snow, Glass, Apples - Gaiman/Doran (interesting take of a fairy tale!)

Punisher 2099 #1 (it's ok)

Batman: Fear State - Tynion IV/Jimenez (I do like it, but i wish it placed more character moments front and center. it also tries to juggle SO many damn characters, and a lot of them just feel like cameos)

Shin Godzilla - 2016 Film (you can TELL that the evangelion team worked on this, it rocks. also the movie is very good)

A Field In England - 2013 Film (it's interesting, and weird, but maybe not anything special quality wise)

The Mexican Night - Lawrence Ferlinghetti (spongebob screaming meme I LOVE READING JOURNALS. I LOVE HEARING NOTHING BUT YOUR THOUGHTS AS YOU GO ABOUT YOUR DAY)

Vern, Custodian of the Universe - Tyrell Waiters (it's cool, and the visuals are great, but the plot is not especially good and it starts to lose what makes it interesting later on)

Barbie - 2023 Film (hilarious, incredible)

Beowulf Graphic Novel - Petrucha/Chamberlain (an interesting take on Beowulf, the art is great![no, i don't know how many times i'm gonna keep saying it either])

Bloom - Panetta/Ganucheau (it's cute and good, but it doesn't go into enough detail or character depth to stick with me)

Inferno - Hickman/Caselli (it's like. alright. it's mostly a political thriller, which is not what i was hoping for when i got it at the library. that's one thing, but i also don't think it's an especially good political thriller. I also don't think it knows where it's going really. i still don't know where it was going and i read the ending and everything.)

Pokemon Blue(it had to all come crashing down eventually, right?)

Cucumber Quest: The Doughnut Kingdom - Gigi D.G. (it's cute and charming! not a lot here beyond that)

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - 1954 Movie (it's engaging and interesting, but i'm not sure what to think critically. good? bad? i kinda don't know. also it's disney in the 50's, there's some gratuitous racism)

Porco Rosso - 1992 Film (the whole "oooh fio likes porco" thing makes me a little uncomfy, but besides that the movie is BALLER. go porco go)

The Golem: How He Came Into The World - 1920 Film (it's interesting, but it's not as enjoyable as stuff like Caligari or Page of Madness)

Superman: For All Seasons - Loeb/Sale (oh my GOD this rocks. so good, so down to earth, so enjoyable. i love this)

All-Star Superman - Morrison/Quitely (I really like this a lot, but I do feel it kinda is off base with what's appealing about Superman to me. it takes Superman and really spins him as a mythical god level figure, to the point where Lois refuses to believe he's Clark and... what the story is is very good. but Superman being regular ol' Clark at the end of the day is what makes him so wonderful to me. This is absolutely a Superman that pretends to be Clark Kent. feel like that's a big distinction. lex's characterization is PHENOMENAL though, SO good.)

My Adventures with Superman Season 1 (it's phenomenal. like spectacular spider-man levels of good. The voicing, animation, designs, writing, it's ALL here. the overarching plot is also particularly capturing in this show, which sometimes fails to be the case for some superhero shows! i will say that i start to dislike SOME elements of the overarching plot introduced in Ep. 7 and beyond, but they don't diminish my love of this show very much at all. cannot WAIT for season 2 foaming at the mouth, chomping, zinging around my room etc)

alright! so that just took me like an hour and a half. but that kinda stuff is what i think i wanna do with this blog for now! so if that's your cup of tea keep hanging around! and if it's not... well there's always a chance i decide to change it again so idk your call.

mye’s media list, 1/23

last month, i made my first media list--a list of four-ish things i’d like to engage with in that month.

the items on that list were:

for this month, i’ve decided to take on the following:

here’s what i thought about last month’s offerings, and then a rundown of this month’s list:

jojolion

i kind of understand why jjl isn’t as widely read as other parts of jojo: at least, i know what took me so long to read it. i was afraid of reading the last available part, because i didn’t want jojo to be ‘over.‘

i did work up the courage to read it, and i’m very glad that i did! it gave me the same thrill that the other parts have! it had the same creativity and deeply compelling emotional core as every other part, a fabulous reminder of why i love jojo in the first place.

though i understand why people haven’t read it, i’d really suggest that they do!

hikaru ga shinda natsu

god, everything about this is so beautiful in such a unique way. i usually read manga pretty quickly--i’m still trying to cultivate patience--but i really found myself slowing down to take in the gorgeous art and the haunting storyline.

yoshiki is such a compelling protagonist and hikaru (or not-hikaru) is a truly charming love interest, and the underlying symbolism... the horror of growing up gay and approaching queer desire for the first time is portrayed so well here, and it resonated so strongly with me.

there are only a few chapters out as yet, but don’t let that stop you. run, don’t walk, to hikaru ga shinda natsu--and, of course, support the upcoming official release!

pride and prejudice

i will not lie. i did not finish pride and prejudice. i was in a mood for something more action-packed at the time i was reading it, and jojolion quickly consumed all of my attention.

additionally, i found myself thinking ‘i can get the same enrichment in less time by watching the 2005 film.‘

however: i enjoyed what i read of it. i loved austen’s wit so much. i also found it really interesting to observe the way that it was written--the rules of engagement vis a vis writing have really changed in the past 200 years.

not bad! just not what i needed at that time.

i’m sure you’ve noticed that this is on my list for both december and january--this is because i didn’t make it. i didn’t touch it at all, i just didn’t have time.

my excitement to read this book is unchanged. it’s in my kindle library. it will happen.

this month’s list

princess jellyfish/kuragehime

a favorite anime from my teenage years, but the show doesn’t cover the whole story. since i’m getting back into reading manga, i think it’s finally time to see how princess jellyfish ends.

spy x family cour 2

i have a terrible habit of keeping myself from doing fun things. i feel like i have to earn it by being productive.

i enjoyed the hell out of the first cour of spy x family. it’s time to let myself have fun with the second cour.

it was not fake omg definitely read csm!!! the anime is good but honestly i just . rlly don't think anyone should watch the anime first its just such a good MANGA specifically. idk fujimoto is just such an amazing mangaka n while there's certainly ... well...problematic elements .....hes also just like rlly interesting n g0od at what he does esp w his other stuff.. and like specifically as someone who is both autistic and queer a lot of his works speak to both aspects. for me personally while i cannot in good faith recommend you read fire punch since idk you personally n it can be v triggering its a bit edgy for edginess sake.. it has a transmasc character that while some might dislike i personally really resonated with and cried a lot when reading it. its also like rlly easy to see .. idk his journey as an author. if you've already read csm first .sorry if this is a really long ask !! def read csm if u have the time it rlly saddens me that its kind of gotten he reputation as like .. the creepy incel perv anime...bc that's the exact opposite message....idk its just so good and i feel rlly specifically seen as someone w both autism and adhd and id love to be that last push that convinces you to do it!

1. I am deffo a manga purist (or at least manga-before-anime) person, so I'll get to reading it B) (any sites you'd recommend for this?)

2. I'd likely be alright to read fire punch! (Even if it's too edgy, i do enjoy me some hatereading occasionally..) And I love seeing how authors evolve so thanks for the rec!

3. Tbh i did Not know it had that reputation lol. All i've really heard is that people are wildly excited about it and they have unique opening/credits songs for each episode. Is it just fandom that's that way or does the work itself satirize the creepy-incel stuff (and therefore get misinterpreted)?
