media list (15.01.2024 - 21.01.2024)
👂 Listened:
Albums:
The Truth About Love by Pink (2012) [6.5/10, kind of suffers from being too long - I loved all the songs in the first half, but barely any from the second half.]
Sorry For Partyin' by Bowling For Soup (2009) [6/10, fun album - though I think I liked this artist a lot more when I was younger.]
SOS by Sza (2022) [7/10, this album really grew on me as I listened to it - big fan of F2F and Nobody Gets Me.]
Podcasts:
RedHanded [Murder in Ulvila was my standout episode, just because of how the injustice felt so irreparable for those involved. And that's not even getting to the fact that it's unsolved.] Episodes: ⤷ EP 327: Murder in Ulvila ⤷ EP 326: Sarah Payne - Into Thin Air ⤷ EP 319: Lam Kor-wan - The Rainy Night Butcher
Morbid [Leonarda and The Bonebreaker case were the standouts to me this week - the former because of why she committed her crimes and how her upbringing and state of mind impacted her actions, and the latter because it related a lot to my question regarding minors being tried as adults.] Episodes: ⤷ EP 479: World's End Murders ⤷ EP 504: The Sauchie Poltergeist aka Wee Hughie ⤷ EP 505: Leonarda Cianculli - The Soap-Maker of Corregio ⤷ EP 476: Bobby Mackey's Music World ⤷ EP 465: The Devil Made Me Do It ⤷ EP 456: The Bonebreaker Case
National Park After Dark EP 196: The Slenderman Stabbing. Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. [This is the podcast episode that started me thinking about juvenile incarceration and had me doing this poll; it's also what inevitably got me doing more research into prison abolition. Really interesting episode.]
Ghost Story from Wondery [This one was intriguing, and I was super shocked to hear actual Hugh Dancy appear in it. It's absolutely what eventually led to me re-trying Hannibal, I just found him charming and smart and introspective and supportive - I would say the last episodes were a bit repetitive - especially with the psychic - but otherwise highly recommend.]
📖 Read:
Articles:
What About The Rapists and Murders? by Angel Parker from Medium [Article trying to formulate a response to the question of what should be done about people who commit violent crime should prison abolition take place - I found this article was not what you should read if you're truly looking for answers to this question. While I appreciate what the author is trying to do, in terms of highlighting the injustice that happens to those who are incarcerated, and the corruption that occurs within the penal system, it was a frustrating read for someone who was trying to learn more about the more practical aspects of prison abolition as a movement.]
NYC to pay $125K to woman who accused two NYPD cops of rape in last-minute civil suit settlement by John Annesse from Daily News
Should police officers be able to get away with having sex with detainees? from Daily Times [Has some good statistics about police who commit rape. "In 2015, after a year-long investigation, the Associated Press revealed that in the six-year period from 2009 to 2014, about 550 police officers had lost their badges for rape, sodomy and other types of sexual assault; and a further 440 for possession of child pornography and other sex crimes; or sexual misconduct such as propositioning citizens, sexting juveniles, or having consensual but prohibited sex while on duty."]
The Mysterious and Lonely Death of Joyce Vincent from Historic Mysteries
Books:
Luck In The Shadows by Lynn Flewelling [in progress, pretty much no progress since last week due to me being totally distracted by trying to read a 40 page article on prison abolition - that I still haven't finished!]
📺 Watched:
Television:
NBC Hannibal EP 1 & 2 [I wrote a post about this. I'm enjoying it so far. Incredibly dark, but also a lot of subtlety in the characters' dynamics! Definitely something to watch slowly.]

hi ok been EVEN more months haha oopsies
ok i kinda didn't know what to put on this blog because i started getting way too obsessed with superheroes and stopped consuming as much dw(i still love it but like... superheroes are so COOL) so i thought that in order to keep this thing updated, i'd just expand my horizons by porting over my big media watch/read/play/listen list! this is gonna be a massive post of everything so far, and then new updates will be new pieces of media! everything listed in order(and some brief thoughts)
Batman: The Court of Owls - Snyder/Capullo (Great!) Batman: The Court of Owls Vol 2/The City of Owls - Snyder/Capullo (Alright...)
Batman: The Night of Owls - Snyder/Capullo (Meh, but I had incorrect expectations)
Inscryption(Fucking phenomenal, play this bizarre ass game)
Tumblr media
Doctor Who Series 2(Very good!)
Much Ado About Nothing - Shakespeare, a reading (Loved this one)
Neon Genesis Evangelion - The Original Show (yeah this was a fixation for a while too)
Tumblr media
Undertale (really good, but not as loved for me as others)
Julius Caesar, a reading - Shakespeare (Good one Billy)
Donmar Warehouse Production of Julius Caesar (go women go)
A Page of Madness - 1926 Movie (makes no sense but hell yeah)
Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages (God this game frustrated me so much)
As You Like It, a reading - Shakespeare (I think I remember which play this is)
Howl, and Other Poems - Allen Ginsberg (Liked this one! Howl is the strongest by a lot though)
Lunch Poems - Frank O'Hara (Very cool!)
Rewatch of Over The Garden Wall (god this show is so fucking incredible)
Tumblr media
Everything Everywhere All At Once - 2022 Movie (my movie of the year so far, it's beautiful)
Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop - 2021 Movie (Cute! but it's not much more than that)
Cat Soup - 2003 Short Film (Awesome but also What the Fuck?)
Swamp Thing Vol. 1: The Root of All Evil - Millar/Hester/Morrison
Cat Soup Rewatch (Had to share with a friend)
Tumblr media
Bee and Puppycat Season 1 (Adorable!! so lovely and cute)
Everything Everywhere All At Once Rewatch (had to get a friend to see it for the first time)
Bee and Puppycat Season 1 Rewatch (Ok don't judge me)
The Residents: Triple Trouble - 2022 Movie (idk how to start with this one)
Watchmen - Moore/Gibbons (got some nitpick gripes with the ending: but it's fucking brilliant)
Tumblr media
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (Really good! Better ending than the show)
Leonor - 1975 Movie (nothing quite like a theatre yelling "jump off the bridge")
Smiling Friends Season 1 (I knew a lot of the jokes going it, but it's still gutbusting)
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (get his ass Gawain, or get yours got, I guess)
Bless The Daughter Raised by A Voice in Her Head - Warsan Shire (a couple really standout poems in a mostly just ok volume. if this one comes across as harsh, i had to analyze this for 3+ weeks for class)
Adventure Time Season 1 (it's my roommate's favorite show, i'd never seen it)
Doctor Who: The Heralds of Destruction - Cornell/Jones (it's good, with material that does hold, but it's not any spectacular)
Batman & Robin - 1997 Movie (Awful, but also not that)
Super Mario Bros - 1993 Movie (This shit slaps, idc what anyone else says)
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Volumes 1-3 - Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (It's good on it's own, but it's especially interesting as an adaptation of the show)
JLA: Earth 2 - Morrison/Quitely (I really like it, but also wish it was longer)
Tumblr media
Adventure Time Season 2(still cute!)
The Amazing Spider-Man: Edge of Spider-Verse - lotsa people (They're mostly fine Spider introductions with the man-spider guy one being notably bad and Peni's being notably good)
Adventure Time Season 3 (fun, I started getting really into the show at this point)
Adventure Time Season 4 (fun, still ramping on excitement)
Adventure Time Season 5 (good, but maybe my least favorite season. just a lot of sadder episodes in this one)
Fahrenheit 451 - 2018 Film (it sucks. also they should've been gay. but what do I know)
Ariel - Sylvia Plath (yeah ok cut out my heart why don't you)
Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask - Akira Himekawa (very fun interpretation of the story! but i wish it was a bit longer)
Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons (I like this one more than ages, but not by much)
Scott Pilgrim Comic Reread, All 6 Volumes - Bryan Lee O'Malley (I still love it and find a LOAD in it, despite it's occasional drastically poor choice in language or implication
Le Mani Sulla Citta - 1963 Film (god i could watch italian guys argue all day) watched between Scott Pilgrim Volumes 1 and 2 but I wanted to keep it neat
Tumblr media
Adventure Time Season 6(maybe my favorite season? either this one or season 7)
Dracula Ballet - Milwaukee Ballet Company (Good show! read the book first or it won't make a lick of sense)
Robo Sapiens: Tales of Tomorrow - Toranosuke Shimada (very very cool, super interesting almost a little martian chronicles esque)
Murder On The Orient Express - 2017 Film (very fun and interesting movie to watch: should be noted i've never read the book)
Adventure Time Season 7 (on rereading episode lists, this one is probably my easy favorite. so many good ones)
Pokemon Blue (i was trying to do a generationlocke, you see)
Never Open It: The Taboo Trilogy - Ken Niimura (really really good, the art is especially great in this one)
Pokemon Crystal (see?)
Pokemon Emerald (SEE???)
Adventure Time Season 8 (Great, but the beginning of a slight downward trend in my enjoyment of the show. it becomes more plot focused than character focused here, and that did make it a bit less fun. still great though)
Tumblr media
Loveless - Alice Oseman (I love a lot of her books, and I love this one too! but for some reason it just doesn't strike me as fully satisfying and i don't know why)
Pokemon Firered Omega (SEE???? also i wanted to add romhacks to make it harder)
Adventure Time Season 9 (some really good character moments, but it is even more plot focused here)
Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse - 2018 Film (holy fuck this movie is incredible, maybe just as loved as EEAAO?)
The Complete Maus - Art Spiegelman (really good! art is great, and the metanarrative is super interesting)
Pokemon Blue (I died)
Time Guardian Volume 1 - Kishi/Ichinose (it's fun, but nothing really beyond that)
Pokemon Blue (guess who died again)
Adventure Time Season 10 (finally did it! the most plot focused of the last seasons, and thus it's maybe the least memorable to me. still really good though)
Spiderman: Across The Spider-Verse - 2023 Movie (it's great, but not quite as good as the first because it doesn't stand-alone. chock full of the best visuals, voicing, and story of the year though)
Tumblr media
Pokemon Crystal (ok....)
Pokemon Emerald (uh huh......)
Ghost in the Shell - 1995 Film (Really weird and interesting and pretty! I liked it)
Knives Out - 2019 Film (it's very good, especially because of the family banter and performances. without it's cast it would probably not be so great. though the plotting does come together in the end for me)
The Spectacular Spider-Man Season 1 (oh my GOD this show is so good)
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (it's good, but I really love to see the detective/criminal battle of wits in mystery/detective movies and that's really not what this movie is)
Snow, Glass, Apples - Gaiman/Doran (interesting take of a fairy tale!)
Punisher 2099 #1 (it's ok)
Punisher 2099 #2 (it's also ok, neither here nor there)
Batman: Fear State - Tynion IV/Jimenez (I do like it, but i wish it placed more character moments front and center. it also tries to juggle SO many damn characters, and a lot of them just feel like cameos)
Shin Godzilla - 2016 Film (you can TELL that the evangelion team worked on this, it rocks. also the movie is very good)
A Field In England - 2013 Film (it's interesting, and weird, but maybe not anything special quality wise)
The Mexican Night - Lawrence Ferlinghetti (spongebob screaming meme I LOVE READING JOURNALS. I LOVE HEARING NOTHING BUT YOUR THOUGHTS AS YOU GO ABOUT YOUR DAY)
Vern, Custodian of the Universe - Tyrell Waiters (it's cool, and the visuals are great, but the plot is not especially good and it starts to lose what makes it interesting later on)
Barbie - 2023 Film (hilarious, incredible)
Tumblr media
Beowulf Graphic Novel - Petrucha/Chamberlain (an interesting take on Beowulf, the art is great![no, i don't know how many times i'm gonna keep saying it either])
Bloom - Panetta/Ganucheau (it's cute and good, but it doesn't go into enough detail or character depth to stick with me)
Inferno - Hickman/Caselli (it's like. alright. it's mostly a political thriller, which is not what i was hoping for when i got it at the library. that's one thing, but i also don't think it's an especially good political thriller. I also don't think it knows where it's going really. i still don't know where it was going and i read the ending and everything.)
Pokemon Blue(it had to all come crashing down eventually, right?)
Cucumber Quest: The Doughnut Kingdom - Gigi D.G. (it's cute and charming! not a lot here beyond that)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - 1954 Movie (it's engaging and interesting, but i'm not sure what to think critically. good? bad? i kinda don't know. also it's disney in the 50's, there's some gratuitous racism)
Porco Rosso - 1992 Film (the whole "oooh fio likes porco" thing makes me a little uncomfy, but besides that the movie is BALLER. go porco go)
Tumblr media
The Golem: How He Came Into The World - 1920 Film (it's interesting, but it's not as enjoyable as stuff like Caligari or Page of Madness)
Superman: For All Seasons - Loeb/Sale (oh my GOD this rocks. so good, so down to earth, so enjoyable. i love this)
All-Star Superman - Morrison/Quitely (I really like this a lot, but I do feel it kinda is off base with what's appealing about Superman to me. it takes Superman and really spins him as a mythical god level figure, to the point where Lois refuses to believe he's Clark and... what the story is is very good. but Superman being regular ol' Clark at the end of the day is what makes him so wonderful to me. This is absolutely a Superman that pretends to be Clark Kent. feel like that's a big distinction. lex's characterization is PHENOMENAL though, SO good.)
And now... my most recent watch............
yeah ok it's more superman
My Adventures with Superman Season 1 (it's phenomenal. like spectacular spider-man levels of good. The voicing, animation, designs, writing, it's ALL here. the overarching plot is also particularly capturing in this show, which sometimes fails to be the case for some superhero shows! i will say that i start to dislike SOME elements of the overarching plot introduced in Ep. 7 and beyond, but they don't diminish my love of this show very much at all. cannot WAIT for season 2 foaming at the mouth, chomping, zinging around my room etc)
Tumblr media
alright! so that just took me like an hour and a half. but that kinda stuff is what i think i wanna do with this blog for now! so if that's your cup of tea keep hanging around! and if it's not... well there's always a chance i decide to change it again so idk your call.

mye’s media list, 1/23
last month, i made my first media list--a list of four-ish things i’d like to engage with in that month.
the items on that list were:
jojolion
hikaru ga shinda natsu
pride and prejudice
when the angels left the old country
for this month, i’ve decided to take on the following:
spy x family cour 2
princess jellyfish/kuragehime
when the angels left the old country
here’s what i thought about last month’s offerings, and then a rundown of this month’s list:
last month’s list
jojolion
i kind of understand why jjl isn’t as widely read as other parts of jojo: at least, i know what took me so long to read it. i was afraid of reading the last available part, because i didn’t want jojo to be ‘over.‘
i did work up the courage to read it, and i’m very glad that i did! it gave me the same thrill that the other parts have! it had the same creativity and deeply compelling emotional core as every other part, a fabulous reminder of why i love jojo in the first place.
though i understand why people haven’t read it, i’d really suggest that they do!
stan jobin.
hikaru ga shinda natsu
god, everything about this is so beautiful in such a unique way. i usually read manga pretty quickly--i’m still trying to cultivate patience--but i really found myself slowing down to take in the gorgeous art and the haunting storyline.
yoshiki is such a compelling protagonist and hikaru (or not-hikaru) is a truly charming love interest, and the underlying symbolism... the horror of growing up gay and approaching queer desire for the first time is portrayed so well here, and it resonated so strongly with me.
there are only a few chapters out as yet, but don’t let that stop you. run, don’t walk, to hikaru ga shinda natsu--and, of course, support the upcoming official release!
pride and prejudice
i will not lie. i did not finish pride and prejudice. i was in a mood for something more action-packed at the time i was reading it, and jojolion quickly consumed all of my attention.
additionally, i found myself thinking ‘i can get the same enrichment in less time by watching the 2005 film.‘
however: i enjoyed what i read of it. i loved austen’s wit so much. i also found it really interesting to observe the way that it was written--the rules of engagement vis a vis writing have really changed in the past 200 years.
not bad! just not what i needed at that time.
when the angels left the old country
i’m sure you’ve noticed that this is on my list for both december and january--this is because i didn’t make it. i didn’t touch it at all, i just didn’t have time.
my excitement to read this book is unchanged. it’s in my kindle library. it will happen.
this month’s list
princess jellyfish/kuragehime
a favorite anime from my teenage years, but the show doesn’t cover the whole story. since i’m getting back into reading manga, i think it’s finally time to see how princess jellyfish ends.
spy x family cour 2
i have a terrible habit of keeping myself from doing fun things. i feel like i have to earn it by being productive.
i enjoyed the hell out of the first cour of spy x family. it’s time to let myself have fun with the second cour.
let’s get going! and, of course, if you have any suggestions for things to include on future media lists, feel free to reach out! i’d love to hear from you!
thanks for listening!

it was not fake omg definitely read csm!!! the anime is good but honestly i just . rlly don't think anyone should watch the anime first its just such a good MANGA specifically. idk fujimoto is just such an amazing mangaka n while there's certainly ... well...problematic elements .....hes also just like rlly interesting n g0od at what he does esp w his other stuff.. and like specifically as someone who is both autistic and queer a lot of his works speak to both aspects. for me personally while i cannot in good faith recommend you read fire punch since idk you personally n it can be v triggering its a bit edgy for edginess sake.. it has a transmasc character that while some might dislike i personally really resonated with and cried a lot when reading it. its also like rlly easy to see .. idk his journey as an author. if you've already read csm first .sorry if this is a really long ask !! def read csm if u have the time it rlly saddens me that its kind of gotten he reputation as like .. the creepy incel perv anime...bc that's the exact opposite message....idk its just so good and i feel rlly specifically seen as someone w both autism and adhd and id love to be that last push that convinces you to do it!
1. I am deffo a manga purist (or at least manga-before-anime) person, so I'll get to reading it B) (any sites you'd recommend for this?)
2. I'd likely be alright to read fire punch! (Even if it's too edgy, i do enjoy me some hatereading occasionally..) And I love seeing how authors evolve so thanks for the rec!
3. Tbh i did Not know it had that reputation lol. All i've really heard is that people are wildly excited about it and they have unique opening/credits songs for each episode. Is it just fandom that's that way or does the work itself satirize the creepy-incel stuff (and therefore get misinterpreted)?
4. As someone with adhd I feel the last push into the chainsaw man manga. You've done it anon.

Can I know your media/fandom list? :)
Oh man, yeah I can sure try, I'm in a lot of Fandoms though so like, might have to reblog with additions so keep an eye out for that!
Also note, if a peice of media on this list is problematic, the chances are I know, and don't support the problematic aspects, or don’t know, but I’ll never actively support bad shit, so please, no drama for what I list that I like.

the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"
just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible
#due to the Great Data Decay academics write viciously argumentative articles on which episodes aired in what order#at conferences professors have known to engage in physically violent altercations whilst debating the air date number of household viewers#90% of the couch gags have been lost and there is a billion dollar trade in counterfeit “lost copies”#serious note: i'll be honest i always assumed it was english imperialism that made shakespeare so inescapable in the 19th/20th cent#like his writing should have become obscure at the same level of his contemporaries#but british imperialists needed an ENGLISH LANGUAGE (and BRITISH) writer to venerate#and shakespeare wrote so many damn things that there was a humongous body of work just sitting there waiting to be culturally exploited...#i know it didn't happen like this but i imagine a English Parliament House Committee Member For The Education Of The Masses or something#cartoonishly stumbling over a dusty cobwebbed crate labelled the Complete Works of Shakespeare#and going 'Eureka! this shall make excellent propoganda for fabricating a national identity in a time of great social unrest.#it will be a cornerstone of our elitist educational institutions for centuries to come! long live our decaying empire!'#'what good fortune that this used to be accessible and entertaining to mainstream illiterate audience members...#..but now we can strip that away and make it a difficult & alienating foundation of a Classical Education! just like the latin language :)'#anyway maybe there's no such thing as the 'greatest writer of x language' in ANY language?#maybe there are just different styles and yes levels of expertise and skill but also a high degree of subjectivity#and variance in the way that we as individuals and members of different cultures/time periods experience any work of media#and that's okay! and should be acknowledged!!! and allow us to give ourselves permission to broaden our horizons#and explore the stories of marginalized/underappreciated creators#instead of worshiping the List of Top 10 Best (aka Most Famous) Whatevers Of All Time/A Certain Time Period#anyways things are famous for a reason and that reason has little to do with innate “value”#and much more to do with how it plays into the interests of powerful institutions motivated to influence our shared cultural narratives#so i'm not saying 'stop teaching shakespeare'. but like...maybe classrooms should stop using it as busy work that (by accident or designs)#happens to alienate a large number of students who could otherwise be engaging critically with works that feel more relevant to their world#(by merit of not being 4 centuries old or lacking necessary historical context or requiring untaught translation skills)#and yeah...MAYBE our educational institutions could spend less time/money on shakespeare critical analysis and more on...#...any of thousands of underfunded areas of literary research i literally (pun!) don't know where to begin#oh and p.s. the modern publishing world is in shambles and it would be neat if schoolwork could include modern works?#beautiful complicated socially relevant works of literature are published every year. it's not just the 'classics' that have value#and actually modern publications are probably an easier way for students to learn the basics. since lesson plans don't have to include the#important historical/cultural context many teens need for 20+ year old media (which is older than their entire lived experience fyi)

Gay ships from video games and other media that have fanbases full of dudebros and 16-year-old boys that would get pissy about said ships are my bread and butter

I saw someone complain that Steve has no lore and that he's in stranger things mostly as comic relief despite having so much trauma that never gets addressed and I immediately took offense to these because heyyy!!! what about his nightmares?? the migraines??? he can't swim in his pool because of Barb!!! and no lore??? he's our bisexual himbo abandoned by his parents, terrible dad, who's trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life while working on his personal issues! he has so many layers!!!
... then I realized we all collectively did that, nothing I thought about was canon 🧍‍♂️
