i like the direct implication that star wars doesn't happen in some fictional universe but it happens in Our Universe. it's just So Far Away that none of it even concerns us. like so far that despite the fact they've got lightspeed transportation figured out its still out of reach

On a related tangent, bring me any piece of media (and I really mean ANY piece of media) that manages to reach a certain degree of widespread popularity, and I will show you hundreds (literal hundreds) of comments, posts, essays and articles published online and in printed media (up to and including newspapers and books) whose core point essentially boils down to:

“I don’t see the appeal of this piece of media that’s popular with the unwashed masses, or otherwise I don’t like it because it offends my personal sensibilities. But I’m such an egotistical self-centered jackass that can’t stand the notion of other people enjoying something that I don’t, that I’m going to write these long dissertation where I demonize this piece of media and blame it for the downfall of good taste, social mores, human intelligence and/or the current decadent state of our civilization. Bonus points if instead of using arguments based on actual facts, I just pull complete bullshit out of my ass in order to support my claims”.

And I really mean any piece of media of any type: Fortnite, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pokémon, Dragon Ball, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman and a long, long etcetera. All of them massively popular things in their respective genres and/or medium. All of them widely demonized by so-called “intellectuals” who are actually just being snobbish and that far too often become outright deceitful.

For the record, I’m not saying that popular things are somehow “beyond criticism” or that they don’t have their fair share of flaws that shouldn’t be dissected and pointed out.

What I’m saying is:

1. If you are going to criticize something, make sure your arguments are based on both facts and the actual merits (or lack of thereof) of the thing in question. Don’t use logical fallacies and reaches to sustain said arguments, and definitely don’t invent outright falsities or lies in support of your point. Because anyone who decides to check the piece of media in question will realize you are being insincere at best, acting like an outright fool at worse.

2. Learn to differentiate between what’s a matter of genuine lack of merit or quality, and what’s just a matter of personal taste or personal sensibilities. Realize as well that something not appealing to you might still appeal to someone else and that such a thing is perfectly fine.

3. Finally, because it really needs to be repeated: There is a line between being critical and being an unreasonable snobbish jackass.
