Squeaky Stairs; George Weasley

synopsis: reader is visiting the Weasleys on Christmas break and sneaks out with George in the middle of the night because of hot chocolate.

warnings: fluff, literally 1 curse word, somnambulism.

You closed Ginny’s door carefully, trying to avoid any sound it could’ve made when two hands gripped your waist from behind. You gasped and turned to look at the person.

“Georgie,” you said quietly, letting out a breath you didn’t realise you were holding.

“Hello darling,” he said with a cheeky smile. His hands were still on your waist.

You smiled at him and shoved his shoulder. “You scared the hell out of me!”

He chuckled softly, “Come on,” he took your hand and guided you downstairs.

You were spending the Christmas holidays at the Burrow. This afternoon in particular you and George planned on spending the night together drinking Molly’s hot chocolate, waiting till midnight when it was finally Christmas.

So that’s why you're here, walking out of Ginny’s room, with your best friend waiting for you at the door.

George had gone from the third floor to the second one easily without much noise. So he wasn’t expecting the rather loud squeaky sound the wooden made right on the first step of the stairs.

The two of you tried your best to step on the right places of the stairs but were obviously failing. Each step taken was louder than the next. Merlin, the burrow kitchen never seemed so close and yet so far away.

George couldn’t take it any longer, letting out a burst of laughter loud enough to wake up the nearest rooms. You tried to hold back and shush him up, but his laugh was contagious, and you couldn't seem to control your own chuckles from coming out of your mouth, which only led to louder laughter from the boy.

You two didn’t realise that you were now sitting in the middle of the stairs, panting for breath, as you both couldn't seem to contain yourselves over each other's laughter. But that was until you heard a door opening.

You froze. “George,” you whispered, trying to warn him. The sound of footsteps came from upstairs. The redhead was still laughing, not realizing that someone had woken up. You, on the other hand, were silent, your stomach twisting in nervousness as the footsteps got louder, meaning the person was just getting closer.

“George!” you whispered yelled, and in a sudden movement both of your hands came up to press over his mouth. The laughter died on his lips and his eyes widened at your action, looking deeply into your eyes.

You looked up at the last sound of wood squeaking, only to see Fred at the bottom of the upstairs stairs. He was barefoot and in pyjamas. And his eyes were… close?

"It's Fred… is he asleep?" you asked looking at George, realizing how close you were to him, he was still looking at you intently and while your hands were still over his mouth. He nodded slowly.

Your hands dropped from his lips, revealing his now rosy cheeks, the sight just filling your stomach with butterflies. And with that, the thought of Fred's sleepwalking episode completely disappeared from your mind at that moment.

The air thickened with his stare. You looked up the stairs where Fred once was, only to see that he had disappeared, probably heading back to his room. "Should we get some hot chocolate?" he spoke, and you remembered why the two of you were in the middle of the stairs.

"Of course…" you said. He helped you up, and the two of you walked the last few steps of the stairs.

You realised that day you have fallen for your best friend.

Shit.

“Are we there yet?” You asked as you looked around, trying to figure out where exactly you were in the castle. Having a little trouble with the little slit you were working with for the left eye.

“No y/n, I’ll-” George said. Stopping in his tracks to look at you.

Your eye closed fully at the sight of her boyfriend looking straight into the slit of your eye. “You cheeky little...” He released his hand from yours and straightened the tie – his tie – around her head. “No peeking!”

“I was not!” Lies, you were peeking. “It just slipped a little!” Yeah, that was true.

“Okay then.” He chuckled, the smirk in his voice noticeably even blindfolded. His hand returned to the place where it was holding yours, giving it a little squeeze, making a giggle escape your lips. “I’ll let you know when we get there, love.”

You and George have been together for almost a year. And these little sneak-outs weren’t anything new to you. Every once in a while, you’ve sneaked out from your dorms to be together in some other places. It was a common thing to do, and you weren’t complaining. But blindfolded? This was anything but ordinary.

And right now, you found yourself walking down halls, past curfew, and blindfolded, with his tie.

After a few moments of walking through hallways and turning into corridors, he stopped. You heard a noise of a lever accompanied by a harsh sound of something moving.

“Watch your step.” He warned you. His voice echoed through what you thought was a passageway.

This hallway was much colder than the one before, and apparently much darker as well when hearing George whisper “Lumus”, the lighting spell.

He leads you down the hall with your hands intertwined together, his thumb gently stroking the back of your hand. Along the way, the hallway narrowed a bit, and now you found yourself glued to George’s side. Until he stopped.

“Okay, we’re here.”

“Can I take this off?” You pointed to the knot at the back of your head.

“Yeah.”

You reach out to undo the knot, but George was quicker. Gently placing her hands behind her head, his hands briefly brush against yours at the sudden action, before you place yours down again and letting him undo it for you. He loosens the tie around your head and places it to rest around his neck. As your eyes scanned the place, now viewing the stone passageway with dim lighting and a single door in front of you.

“Where are we?” You asked. Looking anywhere but at him, hoping the little flush rising up your neck from their previous movement would go unnoticed.

“Why, don’t you trust me?” He asked with his mischievous grin. His eyes never left your face.

“Quite the opposite.” You eyed the passageway. “I think I trust you a little too much.”

A smile grows on George’s face as he reached down to kiss your cheek, leaving you blushing harder. He backed away as he leaned against the hall door.

“Me and Fred found this place when we were exploring the secret passages around the castle,” he began. “This one didn’t get us anywhere. We just encountered what we thought were some old classrooms.”

“So… well… while you were doing… Merlin knows what.” He said, now opening the door. Viewing a room full of candles, not needing George Lumus’ spell to light the space. “I set up a blanket fort for us.” ending his sentence with a shy smile.

“You did not!” You exclaimed with the biggest smile on your face.

“I sure did.” He looked at you, his smile matching yours. When he rushed in front of the fort’s entrance. “The password to get in is three words.”

You approached him, trying to push him away, both of you giggling with the action.

“Let me in.”

“Nah ah ah,” he shook his head at you, slightly jogging you away. “Not so fast darling, try again.”

“C’mon Georgie.” You know what he wanted you to say. You just wanted to mess with him a little.

“No, pretty lady, that’s not the password either.” His eyes sparkled at your figure.

You get close to George again, grabbing his jaw with both hands and pulling his face impossible closer to yours.

“I. love. you.” You said in between kisses, two on his right and left cheek and the last one on the lips. You kiss him sweetly as he melts into your touch.

His hands find their way to your hips, but you pull away, too quickly for George’s dismay. Looking at him with a sweet smile.

“Wrong password,” he said, looking at your lips, giving it a brief kiss and wanting to kiss it once more, but quickly returning to look into your eyes. A slight blush painted on the cheeks you recently kissed. “But since you’re so cute, I’ll make an exception.”

You two were on the mattress inside the blanket fort. You stayed there for a long time. Cuddling each other, not knowing how much time had passed, but honestly, hours could have gone by and you couldn’t care less. Now, you just wanted to focus on George.

And your head on his chest.

And his heartbeat.

And his hands around your waist.

And.. now you have a question wandering around in your mind.

“George.” You started.

He hummed in response, giving your hips a little squeeze, signalling you to continue. “Yea?” His voice was a brief raspy than normal.

“What was the password?”

“What password?” He question.

“The fort’s password. What was it?” You asked again, now hearing his heart beat faster.

Silence.

You turned your head, now facing him, just inches from each other. “It was ‘I love you,’” she smirked. “Wasn’t it?”

He didn't fight away the familiar blush that returned to his features, a shade darker than before. That he knew you had noticed. As you knew, he noticed your own coming up to your cheeks.

“It was.”

⊹ To find the Hufflepuff Common Room, which is in the basement of Hufflepuff, the student must go down the same corridor that gives access to the kitchen and go to the right side of it, where they will find a pile of large barrels, which are stacked in a shadowy stone recess.

⊹ Now, the only way to open the passage is by tapping barrel 2 from the bottom, in the middle of the second role, in the rhythm of “Helga Hufflepuff”. The wrong barrel, rhythm, or number of tapping will result in a lead bursting off and soaking the trespasser in vinegar.

↳ Professor Sprout asks for students to stop freaking out for not getting the right beat on the barrel. We get it, you’re soaking wet. But try to relax, for Merlin’s sake! You’re making a trail of vinegar and house-elves keep slipping on it!

⊹ When you’ve passed the sloping earthy passage inside the barrel and finally entered the door of the Rabbit Hole, you’ll see our circular-shaped common room. Here is a very welcoming place to stay. People usually lie on couches trying to snuggle up (which is why we have a ton of blankets) or tending to the sheer number of plants that surround the room.

⊹ Is true that we are in the basement, but it always feels sunny here! There are windows in the common room that look out onto the rippling grass and dandelions of the school grounds, and the common room itself never gets too hot in the summer, and never too cold in the winter either! Here it is always full of colourful flowers, plants and various cacti that do not stop dancing for the students. Oh, and speaking of plants, I might remind you, don’t forget to feed the carnivorous plants!

⊹ There are two round rabbit hole doors under the stairs. They’ll take you to the girls’ and boys’ dorms, and now that you know the common room, you’re free to go to your dorm whenever you like!

↳ Hufflepuff students, please don’t try to play with the Whomping Willow! We all know that is very intriguing, but it’s a big old tree that doesn’t want to be disturbed and has very little patience.

⊹ There are some barrels in the common room. When there is a party some students fill them with butterbeer.

⊹ I think that the common room has two floors. I don’t know why, but it just makes sense to me that it would be because of the large number of students.

⊹ There’s a small barrel passage on the wall of the common room, which leads you to the kitchen, and is only used by house-elves, who bring one of Helga’s food recipes every day to the Hufflepuff students.

⊹ To get to your dorm, you will have to go up one of the two staircases in the Hufflepuff Common Room, each on the opposite side of the other. They will take you to your dorms. And after going upstairs, you may find the dorm room you were given.

⊹ Upon entering your dorm, you will find a round room, with stone walls and wooden floor. With round doors and half-circled windows with yellow curtains surrounding the room, overlooking the school grounds.

⊹ Each student has in their dorms a few beds, wooden furniture to store personal belongings, yellow and black carpets, school trunks, plants, and a stove in the centre of the room, which, if necessary, can be turned on to heat the space. Cooper lamps on their dressers and wooden boards cast a warm light in the room, and cooper bed warmers hung on the walls which made the floor warm.

⊹ There is one lavatory connected to each dorm, as well as two communal bathrooms, both on the different sides of the common room, one in the boys’ and the other in the girls’ dormitories.

⊹ You will share the dorm with 4 or 5 other students from the same house and year you’re in.

↳ A wooden board on both sides of the bed. The student can decorate however they want.

↳ A wall mirror hung on the boards.

↳ One wooden nightstand on one side of the bed.

↳ A wooden chair and dresser near the bed, next to the nightstand.

↳ A wooden bookcase with books on top of it, on the other side of the bed.

↳ A plant holder was on the wall on one side of the bed.

↳ A small carpet next to the bed.

↳ A lamp with a lit candle.

⊹ Is provided for the 4 or 5 students in the room:

↳ A water jug, in case of any student in the room feels thirsty in the middle of the night.

↳ A centrally located stove.

↳ A wooden table in the centre of the room, on the stove’s side. With an hourglass on top of a stack of books, an open book with a self-writing quill, parchments, and a flower plant on it.

⊹ To enter the Slytherin Common Room, which is located in the dungeons, one must go to the door on the right side of the Entrance Hall. This door will lead to a set of stone stairs that will guide you deep down the dungeons.

⊹ Now, they have to go behind the damp stone wall where the entrance to the Slytherin Common Room is. The bare stretch of the wall will only open if giving a password, which changes every 15 days. It will only reveal the passage to those who utter the right password to the wall. After emerging from the rectangular passage through the wall, a long underground room will come into view.

↳ New students, please stop going to Snape’s office. He does not like the amount of dazed 1st years who walk into his office every time he tries to work in peace. So, if you see a narrow staircase when you’re trying to get to the common room, turn the other way. Our part of the dungeons is on the other staircase!

⊹ We all know that Black Lake is home to many creatures of different species, and as our common room is partly underground and partly submerged, we can see the underwater life from here. Which, as a consequence, they often observe students in the room. They normally pass through the common room windows during the day. Sirens, Selkies, Grindylows (who kept bumping into each other to entertain the students), and others. Here it would be a cold space to live in if it weren’t for the two fireplaces in the common room, which warm up the space a bit.

⊹ Now, because of the rays of light coming through the lake, the space becomes a green tinge of colour. And the green lamps and chairs in the room only help to encourage the greenish colour even more. The room is decorated with many leather sofas, dark green button-tufted, dark wood cupboards and piano, tapestries, skulls… But it’s nothing to worry about really...

⊹ Below the large stairs, on the side of the common room, are the dormitories. You should settle in your shared dorm whenever you want!

↳ We keep reminding you that students who are having issues with Peeves are encouraged to tell him that you will send the Bloody Baron to him. I assure you that he will not disturb you anymore.

⊹ There are statues in the Black Lake. Nobody knows how they got there. The oldest students in Hogwarts history couldn’t know how to answer the most common question: “When did they end up down there?”. Anyway, we can see some through the big Slytherin windows.

⊹ The piano in the centre of the common room sometimes plays by itself, but it’s not scary, it does so when it encounters the students’ tension. This habit is so common that students find it very comfortable and relaxing.

⊹ To get to your dorm, you will have to go up one of the two staircases in the Gryffindor Common Room, each on the opposite side of the other. They will take you to your dorms. And after going upstairs, you may find the dorm room you were given.

⊹ Upon entering your dorm, you will find a round room, with stone walls and wooden floor. Windows with red curtains surround the room, overlooking the school grounds.

⊹ Each student has in their dorms a few beds, wooden furniture to store personal belongings, red and yellows carpets, school trunks, and a stove in the centre of the room, which, if necessary, can be turned on to heat the space. Lamps on their dressers and wooden boards also brighten up the room.

⊹ There is one lavatory connected to each dorm, as well as two communal bathrooms, both on the different sides of the common room, one in the boys' and the other in the girls' dormitories.

⊹ You will share the dorm with 4 or 5 other students from the same house and year you're in.

↳ A school trunk at the foot of the bed, and a snuffbox on top of it for their pets.

↳ A wooden board on both sides of the bed. The student can decorate however they want.

↳ A wall mirror hung on the boards.

↳ One wooden nightstand on one side of the bed.

↳ A wooden chair and dresser near the bed, next to the nightstand. An owl perch on the dresser.

↳ A wooden bookcase with books on top of it, on the other side of the bed.

↳ A small carpet next to the bed.

↳ A lamp with a lit candle.

⊹ Is provided for the 4 or 5 students in the room:

↳ A water jug on the windowsill, in case of any student in the room feels thirsty in the middle of the night.

Silver lanterns hung from the ceilings and small alcoves on either side of each bed also brighten up the room.

⊹ It's a fact that you have to close the blinds if you don't want some Merpeople staring at you in your dorm. But sometimes at night, students open the curtain a crack, hiding between the curtain and the window, looking out into the underworld.

⊹ The Slytherins have noticed that there are clues to some ancient relics behind the tapestry designs. Some match other tapestries of the common room and from other doms.

AUTHOR NOTE: This post is intended for my Hogwarts Visualization that I scripted into my own dr. Hope you like it :)

𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

⊹ For my dr visualization, I use a bunch of scenes from the films. Mainly when wanting to visualize the characters. I usually search “(name of the character) scene pack” or “(name of the character) all scenes” on YouTube, and it usually does the deal.

⊹ Although I have recently been using the Hogwarts Legacy Trailer Gameplay scenes a lot for visualizing Hogwarts and the magical places in general, I like that it looks way more detailed than in the films, and that is exactly how I imagine the environment when reading the books.

⊹ To find the Gryffindor Common Room, which is in the Gryffindor Tower, the student must go upstairs to the 7th floor of the castle. After that, they’ll have to go to the end of a corridor, where they will find a portrait of the Fat Lady, who is the one wearing a pink silk dress.

⊹ Now, they will have to walk behind the same portrait to finally enter the common room, and the only way to do that is by giving the Fat Lady a password. The password changes every week. So if the student doesn’t remember, they’ll have to wait until someone who does.

↳ Professor McGonagall asks to keep reminding students not to write passwords down on paper. This action can go terribly wrong…

⊹ Upon entering the round opening in the wall, you will see our circular-shaped Common Room. Here is a very comfortable place to stay, probably because of the incredible view we have from our windows. People here usually take some time to relax by the fire or study at the tables that cover some spaces in the room, or at least they try to; until the boys who walk around with some kind of map are here. When that happens, I suggest you go study elsewhere.

⊹ If you plan on going to Hogsmeade, exchanging notes with other people, or even investing in the buying and selling something, be sure to keep an eye on the notice board. It is updated regularly. Oh, and the new passwords are always there too.

⊹ Two staircases will lead to your dormitories, and now that you know your way around down here, you can go up to your dorm!

↳ Students please, Professor McGonagall is asking for you people to have patience. The Fat Lady must be here at any minute! She probably just left to see her other portraits friends… again…

⊹ The common room is way bigger than it shows in the films. It just makes sense because of the large number of students you know.

⊹ Playing Dungeons and Dragons is such a Gryffindor thing to do, and people would take it very seriously. On game nights, many students paid attention to the game in development, but sooner or later they would have to stop the game because they lost most of the dice. Which eventually could be found buried in the corner of sofas and armchairs, along with candies, sickles, knuts and, very rarely, galleons.

⊹ Gryffindors come into the common room with such random creatures.

⊹ Gryffindors often pass the night chatting in the common room, sipping hot chocolate, drink which I KNOW they love.
