bundletober #5: the books were wrong
continuing on yesterday's theme of 'games that make you re-engage with books in new ways' today's game for bundletober, the cool series everyone si doing where i talk about . a ttrpg, that i got in a bundle, is the books were wrong by chivu.
the first time i tried to paste this image into my post there were like four lines of space before it i couldn't delete. web site. anyways this is a very short game. one-page, in fact, and none of that duplicitous and scurrilous 'one spread but you call it one page' bull shit. no this is the real deal, one a4 page with barely any formatting to speak of. and it's brilliant.
like the rpgs in lit rpg set, the books were wrong needs a book to play with. unlike those rpgs, it can't be any (or nearly any) book -- instead, it has to be a wiki page for the lore of a fantasy series. which is already a fascinating constraint. i think it could also easily be played with any splatbook or sourcebook for a fantasy rpg -- and would only require minor tweaks for a non-fantasy setting.
they require you to do the exact thing i criticize fantasy and ttrpg lore for not doing all the time, and realize that this lore has a perspective. the books were wrong specifically casts you as an anticolonialist scholar, reading through anthropolohical accounts of peoples and cultures and disputing the colonialist and othering narratives woven into them.
it does this by giving you a selection of prompts to answer while going over different parts of the text you're playing with. the sort of questions that increasingly have been asked in anthropological and historical scholarship over the last century as decolonial perspectives have made their voices heard.
it's a real triumph--taking lazy worldbuilding that often (as i've talked about on this silly little blog) employs the vernacular and format of colonial scholarship and actually engaging with that--not just critiquing it, which is easy to do, but engaging with it and asking you play with it and treat it as malleable. one game like this is worth a million 'um you can just ignore the parts of the lore yo udon't like if you're the DM' disclaimers, in my opinion. it's deliberate, clever, and invites you to do something really cool.

a personal struggle + an education
this is all just gigi's opinions + thoughts
Reader, I'm struggling with empathy right now.
Don't worry, I'm not suffering from a personality pathology, I promise I am quite sympathetic and empathetic. It's just battling the feeling of wanting to be kind but also seeing a major problem and knowing I need to get it off my chest.
Let me give it to yall straight (with tweaked/paraphrased details to protect privacy and not to out anyone):
I saw a favorite loass coach/twt account/subliminal creator make fun of an "old timey" English sentence either from Neville Goddard or Edward Art. They proceeded to say that they "hate" it and "why can't they just say it simpler". and then someone else commented "they're talking bullshit fr".
The convo thread on twt devolved into an echo chamber that essentially boiled down to the old fool's adage "If I don't understand it, it must be stupid and not worth it."
This really triggered me because
The phrase quoted was not that hard to understand.
It was clear these women were not educated
Why am I judging or mad at people for their ignorance? (this is why I kept quiet on twt and went here to vent. I acknowledge that two things can be true, I can be kind and still be honest.)
I was and currently am still wrestling with these things within me.
On one hand I don't want to judge. I want to be inclusive and welcoming and supportive.
On the other hand - yall don't look educated, yall wind up looking dumb.
I'll say a harsh truth yall and you can go argue with a damn wall but I know I'm right: stupidity is not cute.
My Hot Take (not so hot when you think about it)
The Law of Assumption rewards those who feed their mind with knowledge
Before you argue with me, think about it. Seriously.
I don't want to seem ableist if someone suffers from dyslexia or if someone struggles in school. It's totally okay to have different paths to learning. The importance is still obtaining the information. You can read or listen to the audiobook, etc. The paths to knowledge are varied but in the end the result is the same - THE KNOWING.
The "old timey" sentence that the creator complained about COULD BE READ BY NINTH GRADERS BECAUSE OF SHAKESPEARE EXPOSURE.
That's why I was exasperated. They were complaining about English (the only language in which they are fluent) that is regularly taught to 14 year olds.
Guys. Stand up. Please stand the fuck up.
Who in this world is gonna take you seriously without BASIC COMPETENCY in literature or math?
Lemme roast some of yall if you want to disagree:
Yall wanna be master manifesters and claim to understand the double slit experiment but can't even name the fundamental laws of science or explain them.
Yall wanna be successful in your businesses and don't know how to calculate your profits.
Yall wanna be seen as intellectuals who "understand" more than the majority of the population and yall can't even fucking read Descartes or Shakespeare.
Yall wanna be content creators and don't know how to proofread.
One time I bought an affirmation tape that came with a pdf with all the affirmations listed. The tape itself was excellent but the pdf was riddled with errors! It makes me sad because something that can help change your life, like a sleep tape to saturate, "cheapens" in its authenticity at the price of minor errors. Sigh.
Let me tell you that 100% you can be successful in this world just by going to the end and claiming it.
BUT YOU LOSE A LOT OF TREASURE BY NOT GIVING YOURSELF THE TOOLS TO DIG FOR IT.
THERE IS SO MUCH FOUNDATIONAL INFORMATION WITHIN THESE "OLD TIMEY" TEXTS.
and if you don't like any of it and just wanna watch sammy ingram and manifest like that THEN GO AHEAD BUT DONT CLAIM TO NOT UNDERSTAND A SENTENCE AND THEN CALL IT BULLSHIT.
just be honest and own it!
be honest that you don't wanna read, that you don't wanna be academic and that's 100% okay and you're still beautiful and worth everything but
do not put down the value of what is being said just because you don't understand it
That's why I am frustrated, reader.
I am educated enough to recognize when someone's ignorance is just that - ignorance.
But I am human enough to be annoyed.
So please give yourselves some grace and take the time to appreciate knowledge. Without the knowledge of the law of assumption, we wouldn't all be here interacting with one another.

Tracing, Copying and Referencing: Ugigiugi and Artist Transparency.
As I've said in my previous posts I was going to go over the differences between tracing, copying, and referencing and explain what is wrong with Ugigiugi's artwork.
This is going to be a long post so if you have the time and hit the "Keep Reading" button..
To start, I'm going to provide an visual explanation of this subject to clarify what counts as tracing, what counts as copying, and what counts as referencing. I will post both the original Instagram link and repost the the examples. Thanks to Chihiro Howe for putting this visual aid together:

With this in mind, let's go over the issue with Ugigiugi. I'll be providing further examples of the sourced/traced art we have here on Tumblr.
Mahoukarp’s animals Vs. Ugigiugi Twst-Character animals.
Here is an overlay of Mahoukarp's croc VS the one Ugigiugi drew:
As you can see this is tracing with the only minor changes being the addition of a white outline, adding Sebek's bangs, and changing the eye color.
Even with these tweaks, the majority of the artwork is still the same in both pose and style. This is still tracing.
Let’s move onto the next sample.

This is one I originally sourced when this situation began to unfold:
This is actually a mix of both tracing and copying. Certain sections of the comic are traced and altered in certain areas so they are not 1 to 1 (e.g the lose of details on Azul's bowtie and the fingers, the "shading" and the Altering of some expressions).
Let’s look at one more sample.

Again, despite the fact that some details have been altered, replaced Yuu with her self-insert, altered the scaling, and shrunk down Crowley, it's still more tracing.
Now comes the issue at hand...
As I stated in my previous post, a number of Japanese fan artists Ugigiugi traces from have strict rules of no reproduction/tracing.
No matter what type of artist you are, it is important to respect each other and the boundaries people set on their art. Some of us create resources to help others. Some of us create for fun. Some of us create to make a living off our skills.
That is not the case here. These artists Ugigiugi takes from all have rules regarding their artwork that she continuously steamrolls over for the sake of her own selfishness. It is not only the mark of a poor artist. It is the mark of a dishonest person.
I've spent the last couple of days mulling over this whole situation, researching and checking messages, mentions, and general inquires related to her most recent update post where she states that she is "stepping away" from social media and issuing two apologies (one on Tumblr and one on Deviant Art).

I've read both and I have a response to these apologies.
I do not believe Ugigiugi is being sincere. At all.
She mentions numerous things in the apologies but my main focus is on the initial sentences and the lack of admission of wrongdoing.
1) Even if English isn't her first language we have to talk about the fact that she continually refers to her actions as "mistakes".
I'll be very blunt here.
You can't mistakenly see another person's artwork, copy it to your heard drive, then trace over it and publish it. These aren't mistakes. These are the deliberate decisions and actions of someone with zero accountability and with clear intentions to take something that does not belong to them and repost it for attention and validation.
You can be misinformed. You can misunderstand. But that doesn't absolve you of personal responsibility when you are called out, even if you're unaware of the harm you're causing. Intentional or not, Ugigiugi has violated the rules and boundaries set by other artists. Repeatedly.
2) Not once in either of these apologies has she ever acknowledged that she has traced artwork. Not once has she linked an original source she copied. She keeps it vague and undefined as a "mistake" without ever stating directly what it is she is apologizing for.
Given this, I can only conclude that she still does not see what she did was wrong or is avoiding the addressing the issue entirely because if she admits guilt, that will call everything she's ever posted into question.
When it comes to apologies you need to demonstrate both honesty and transparency for your actions and the steps you will take to make amends.

Ugigiugi's apologies do none of that. There is nothing but excuses and accusations and deflections everywhere. There's no acknowledgement of the core issue and nothing but griping for sympathy. And it rings entirely hollow in my ears.
When it comes to art, there is no shame in starting at the bottom and working your way up the ladder. You can use online resources, credit other creators if you use things like bases, open resource tools, and tutorials, and you can even ask for feedback to improve. But one thing you need to understand is that every artist has their boundaries. Respecting rules they set is important, especially when they explicitly state "no copying/tracing". You can't build your own skills if you're constantly stealing from others. It weakens you as an artist and it doesn't make you look good to others.
As fans of this game, we should be creating for the right reasons, not blatantly taking what doesn't belong to us. The Twisted Wonderland community has already lost a number of fan artists who have closed/deleted their profiles and accounts due to people like Ugigiugi. It is very sad to see talented fans give up and quit because of this reckless selfishness.
In the end, I can't tell any of you what to do and if you choose to continue to support her, that is your prerogative but moving forward, I and many others will be blocking her to protect ourselves. That is the price to be paid when you are caught tracing artwork. At the very least I hope this post has given anyone still on the fence something to think about.
To make one final thing very clear:
While this post is critical of Ugigiugi, it is NOT an endorsement to dox or harass her or any of her followers. I hate that I have to repeat this but I have seen some things in the tags and I can't abide by it.
In conclusion, I do hope that the TWST community does take this as a lesson and comes away with a better understanding of what tracing/copying/referencing are and of how to be respectful of artists and fandom spaces.

this could range from some minor tweaks, to adding and removing and changing the dialogues entirely.
i will use the official en translation (if there's any) to the dialogues pre-revision, and my own translation or will simply just change the en tl a bit, in both pre (if there's none) and post-revision.

Kohaku/Amber Power
I think Groudon is fairly straightforward. Groudon is said to be the embodiment of the earth, so Amber can control the earth. She's an earth bender now. But I'm still going to try and break down exactly what she can do.
Spikes of earth - a lesser version of precipice blades. While seemingly straightforward on its own, it can be used for several things. For one, it's a good means of trapping. The spikes can be used to corner someone. They can also be used as a means of travel- think toph from Avatar. The spikes being shifted into a wall for protection is also very useful. But above all else, it's a simply good attacking move. Though knowing Amber, she likes to use it in terms of intimidation than anything else.
Heat resistant - Bulbapedia says that Groudon has lava proof scaling, and while I don't know if I want to make Kohaku lave proof, her being able to handle severe heats is something I can do. Though I think bc of that she doesn't fully realize that she herself is hot- as in her skin,she might be hot to the touch. In terms of combat that's great, no one can touch her, but it gets annoying in the day to day life. ESPECIALLY when she has two partners she wants to cuddle. I think over time she learned how to cook herself down, which is nice. Wally n Jin help with their water n wind powers respectively.
Slight magma manipulation - I say slight bc from the sounds of it, Groudon doesn't really have that much control over magma? Not in the way I think Heatran does anyway. Though I could be wrong. Magma to Groudon is more so a place of rest, but! The reason why Groudon can even walk on water is bc it's using magma to form its path, so that's gotta account for something right? For now, I'm just gonna have Amber do the same. Shift magma into a walkable surface for her. This kinda goes the same with lava. She could cause things to erupt from the ground buuuuuut I think she'd rather stick to shifting the earth. Don't want to cause major harm to the environment.
Earth Sensing - This one was inspired by a fangame I'm playing :) And it'll also be tweaked a bit because of Zygarde and Shauna, since both in a way deals with the earth but in different ways. Now, Earth Sensing is pretty straightforward, like a lot of kohaku's powers are. You can use the earth to sense those around you. It does require focus and concentration. While it is possible to do with while moving, focus is still necessary. Also in order to sense anything at all, you and your target have to be on the ground. If you're not, no dice. I think Zygarde might be a similar case but works differently. But that's for a different post.
Sunny Days - very very minor compared to Groudon but she can cause some small shifts in the weather. If she's in a bad mood I think things will get uh. A bit hot. Oh! I think that reminds me, bc of the heat she can actually melt objects! Pretty common among fire type Chosens but yeah.
It kinda goes without saying, but if Kohaku is in the air, she is pretty much useless. No earth to control, nothing to sense, and she doesn't. Exactly have clear fire powers question mark? So. Yeah she's mostly relying on her super strength and durability by that point. It's hard to get Amber down but it's easier when she's in the air.
Ironically, being in the water gives her a slightly easier time. It still sucks, but there's still some pieces of earth that can be manipulated, plus underwater volcanoes.
And yeah! I think that's everything about Kohaku's powers. Sorry got switching between Kohaku and Amber so much. I've been thinking about ditching one for the other completely but I can't decide heh. Anyway! This was fun, I like exploring my ocs powers.

1. Nurse Fahrenheit (left) is a young nurse and scrambling to get a hold of his career at the bottom of the food chain. Frankly, his job sucks at this point in time. He is overworked and almost always stressed. His goal is to climb the ranks and education and eventually become a nurse practitioner so he takes it like a champ. There is a fella that always has his fancy. During his off time, Fahrenheit volunteers at college sporting events and helps the athletes with their minor upkeep as needed.

There is one athlete, a trans stallion named Rainbow Swoop, who is an absolute wuss when it comes to his HRT shot. After trying a few different methods, it was decided the weekly shot would be medically best and he would just need to be poked by someone else to stand it. One day, Nurse Fahrenheit was tasked with this job and had such a soft touch, he was the only one to have never hurt or spooked Swoop while it happened. Swoop decided that Fahrenheit will be his personal assistant for this one task for the rest of time and has the money to pay for it

Fahrenheit, shocked, accepted the job, and the relationship quickly turned from professional to friendship. Nurse Fahrenheit is always looking out for Rainbow Swoop and making sure his health is in check. Poor fella has a HUGE crush on his bestie but they're both too busy to really talk about it.

2. On the left, we have Tight End (name courtesy of Reddit). I assume this is somehow American football related but I know nothing of football so I find this insanely funny. I have the humor of a four year old. I would not have noticed this pony otherwise. I thought about something, though, past elementary sex jokes. There is very little representation of masc, big/buff bottoms. This is a sfw account so I'm not going to talk about sex much publicly but one thing led to another and now we're here. He is a total babe for his boyfriend, Vellum Codex (right).
Vellum was a sad little nerd as a youth that became insanely hot as an adult. He's a career comic artist. From the outside, it would seem that Tight and Vell would have nothing in common, but they have a strong bond over being completely misunderstood and stereotyped by their peers.
They were high school sweethearts but kept it a secret. The football (buckball?) team captain couldn't admit to dating some comic obsessed NERD. Poor Tighty had to deal with a lot of unlearning shit as a youth. He couldn't let go of his mans though so they went to the same college. Now, Tight End is a professional football player and his hubby is a professional comic artist.

Blog Post 5/29/2023
Music is an artistic venture that's been on my mind a lot as of late. Rather, lyrics are specifically. I've been taking a different approach with lyrics than previous efforts (different from what I've put out publicly anyway), trying to get more personal. A lot has changed in my sense of self recently (trans moment teehee) and its made attempts to write more personal stuff feel,,, strange. Songs I wrote mere months ago feel like they were written by a different person, ideas expressed in earnest feel fake somehow.
I tried to make a clumsy snapshot of myself at this point in time, a lyrical self portrait of sorts, but the subject changed always through the painting. All it really needs is a little course correction; tweak some lyrics, scrap a few songs, write a few new ones, typical creative process. But even so its got me thinking in pretentious philosophical ways I hadn't considered before.
Can a person really be captured in the art they make? The answer is no, of course, the most realistic paintings, the most high quality photos, no matter the medium there will always be something missing. Someone could write an autobiography the length of all the Wheel of Times books put together and details would still be missing. You could film every second of a person's life and still never capture the whole picture. Of course what I'm attempting is nowhere near as ambitious, but even capturing one moment in time in total is impossible. Even in the attempt, the moment passes and a new moment is born. Sometimes the changes aren't drastic so its negligible, but of course realizing you're trans is anything but a minor shift.
Words are a weird thing for me. When I'm speaking in the moment I never feel like I can muster the right words to truly express what I'm trying to say. Given time and a big word count I can get closer, but even when I'm satisfied I'll come back to it a day later and realize ten billion things I forgot to say or wish I worded better. This includes stuff like this very blog post this sentence was added last minute.
Lyricism and poetry is a whole other beast, though. So much more has to be taken into account when crafting every line, and some ideas are really fucking hard to compress down into a rhyme scheme and melody. Ideas of the self are especially difficult. How can I make a song to express an image of myself when I barely know who I am? How can I create a snapshot of myself as a person when I barely feel like I'm real? If I don't even feel like me, how can I know what that "me" even is and express it in any way, let alone lyrically?
I've tried expressing that very experience via song and while I've written some lines I'm proud of I still feel like I'm barely scratching the surface of what I want, what I need, to convey. Part of the whole point of this project is to take the ideas and feelings out of my shitty brain and express them outwardly. Even though only like 5 people will listen or care (hi friends :3) the fact that it was heard is what matters. The fact it could be heard. But I can't make something heard if I don't know how to say it. No matter what I do, anything I write anything I sing anything I create will just be a faint silhouette of the picture.
I guess all art is like that, though. A drawing or painting can never measure up to the image formed in the artist's mind. A novel can never contain every detail of the vast world an author imagines. A song can never fully convey the emotion of the songwriter/performer. But, these things still resonate. A novel can't contain the whole of fantastical world in the author's mind, but it can create a whole new one in the mind of the reader. Art doesn't end with the artist. Once its made, once its out there, while the version in the artist's head will die with them, a new version will be made in the mind of everyone that chose to engage with it.
I can never fully express myself in the way I want to, but I can express enough that whoever engages with my art can form an image in their own head. Maybe it differs from mine, but the details that matter will be there. I can never fully put myself in a song, but I can try. I can put fragments together that a listener can pick up and graft to their own experience. Maybe it isn't about making an image of myself. That's certainly part of it on my end, but it doesn't end with me. Maybe its about making a mirror. A mirror containing fragments of myself that can also reflect fragments of whoever chooses to pick it up. Even if I am the subject, my art will never ultimately be about me.
I feel like a pretentious ass even insinuating anything I make could ever have a serious impact on someone, but I hope it does. If I could impact even one person with my art the way other people's art has impacted me, that's more than I could ever ask for. Even if I don't though, even if everything I make is doomed to obscurity for the rest of time and even all my friends fucking hate it, maybe it was enough that I tried. Maybe that's all that really matters in the end. Maybe that fruitless yet meaningful effort is what art truly is. I don't know.

So! I was randomly hit with the urge to do some old art redraws, just for fun to see how I've improved. But instead of choosing a drawing myself, I enlisted some friends to do it! They were linked my old deviantart account, and asked to chose a drawing for me to redo! Here's the first of these, from 2012 chosen by @tigerwriter
This is a reference for an attempt I once made to convert some of my neopets characters into non-neopet anthro characters, so that I could write them without being pigeonholed by neo's notoriously draconian THINK OF THE CHILDREN limitations. This specific character, Itembe, was a revamp of a skunk aisha character named Zerue, the sidekick, best friend and emotional anchor of main character Gary. Rue was noted for being a total goofus, always cracking jokes, and in the first draft of the story he also got shoved in a fridge, though in later redrafts for the Neopian times I would abandon that aspect and let him live.
And here's the redraw!
I decided to change up the pose to better reflect the character's personality, so it looked less static and boring. I also made some tweaks to his outfit so it looked more cohesive and aesthetically pleasing. If I was redesigning this character for serious use I would do some pretty in depth culture studies because despite being very obviously Arab coded his name is… Zulu??? And his armor I don't know what is going on with, culturally speaking. But in the interest of not having it look like a completely different character for the purpose of a comparative redraw, I settled for some more minor tweaks.
And here's the two drawings side by side, 2012 -> 2023.
Overall I'm very happy with how this turned out! It's been a while since I drew an anthro character like this, though they used to be my go-to. I feel like I've gotten a lot more comfortable with costume design, proportions and making poses look natural.
Look forward to more of this little exercise in the future!
