When I say " Kieran is Wally but if he went to the dark side ( let his insecurities get the better of him)" I mean it.

I was looking for this one reddit post of a woman asking for relationship advice dealing with her boyfriend Henry and his odd political views to send to a friend, and, not knowing better, searched for "Reddit Jacobite". And of course, while not initially finding what I was looking for, the site did not disappoint.

The sunlight post was partially a joke but it got me thinking about how the root of my critique with recent FL is a lack of real consequences or stakes. This is the horror genre, and I know it's hard to maintain tension with a regenerating action game with finite story content, but the stories being published should engage the player with suspense and dread.
GCO had the city falling around you. Railway had an angry destructive power literally hanging over your head. The tension was palpable through the shown anxiety of other characters (Efficient Commissioner where are you now). The latest season of Heart's Game hit the mark for me too with the greatly increased intensity of the poison and the dread of not knowing why the Master desires violence.
Evolution? No consequences no matter what ending you chose. Chapter 6 with the diving bell was the only one I was interested in because of the immediate threat to the player. Similarly the exhibition event last summer didn't sell me on grave-robbed angry statues as a threat (the discussion on colonialism and museums is a whooooole other post)
Most of all, a story needs a good antagonist, be that the masters or the neath itself. Evolution and Prelapsarian Exposition had no antagonist and were only motivated by the game telling the player what to do.
And on a personal level of complaint. One of the major speculative elements of the game, the premise from the get-go, is "40 years ago, London was stolen by bats." I understand wanting to explore other characters than the Masters but those other characters have to be interesting (I'm tired of the church and society😔) and you still need a villain in stories that can meet the same stakes. Show us the bats again please why are you caging them (and obligatory mention that the New Sequence is an underutilized villain that's been there for years just WAITING to go)
So this summer I'm hoping there's something happening with the horticulture event. If we can't have a nice plant show, let's see an unreasonably large threat for the premise. That would be funny. Oh, you wanted to play with mushrooms and fertilizer though you expected the plants to rise up and try to take over London? Wrong. Here's a calamity with sunlight

I don't consider myself a sonic fan, only bc I feel like I'm just not familiar with the franchise at all ( never really played the games, just watched some of the cartoons). But. Man. So like from what I can gather, sonic forces wasn't. Suuuuuuper great? No hating to those who like the games, that's just what I've heard. The only reason I mention it was bc my silly idea is pretty much akin to that. Kinda. Not really. I dunno.
It's like. A what if where sonic died (???) and life goes on. And by "life goes on" i mean we get to see an older tails ( possibly in his late teens. 17 turning 18 maybe?) and just him. Living in this world without sonic. I just kept on imagining him just constantly burying himself into work. The only reason he didn't turn out worse is bc Amy and Knuckles were adamant about him taking care of himself and like. Talking openly about how he feels. Still, he's not as bright eyed as he was as a kid. And the "plot" would be either 1) a sonic of the past somehow comes to this future and helps take down eggman or 2) the sonic that died was never really dead, but ended up under the control of egg man for. Whatever reason really. And everyone has to Deal With That.
When I write it out, I guess it's less of a forces rewrite and just like. A spin on it? I guess??? Tbh, I wasn't even thinking of all that, I was more so thinking about the sibling bond between Tails, Amy and Knuckles ( cause I'm a sucker for that) and the grieving of Sonic.
Again! I'm not familiar with this franchise that much! I just think it could be sweet and really cool to see older versions of the characters lol.

I like that when Kieran finally realizes he messed up and decides to prove himself and fix the problem he caused, the little reflections in his eyes come back. It's a small and subtle detail but it says a lot.
Also if I recall correctly the same thing happens to Bede in SwSh after he becomes the new Fairy-type gym leader? His eyes become brighter and more lively.
Yeah :)
I think Kieran finally snapping out of the abyss that was his own self doubt and loathing and finally deciding to help the player was one of my favorite parts of Indigo Disk. My favorite being when he asks if the player and him can start over and he friends :')
Bede is way too prideful to do that, but that doesn't mean I don't think he's trying. He's definitely a bit more kinder/ trying his best to not let that ego of his take over. At least that's how I see it. Also yes, his eyes did become more likely after he started to train under opal and become a gym leader.
I think the theme here is that part of growing up you will fuck up. Bad. But it's a matter of what you do after that and how you're able to grow from it. And I just think that's neat :)

Please tell me if you're seeing this, too. Today I found out that the Archives of Ontario digitised more of the pictorial material in their Simcoe family fonds collection, and among tons of sketches and watercolours by the lifelong prolific Elizabeth and some that weren't in her style, but may have been works by friends or her children, there are these three silhouettes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To state the obvious, the sitters seem to have been portrayed by the same artist, and were a group of two women and a gentleman.
The two women, wearing a simlar bun-like hairstyle, also share similar facial features; both have the same chin and nose. Only the volume of the hair, the softer line between chin and neck in the first woman and the suggestion of a sheer shawl imply that she may be older than the second lady.
The gentleman is rather portly with more than a hint of a double chin and wears a queued wig.
Now, I was curious as to who these people could be, and...
Could they be Samuel Graves, Margaret Graves and Elizabeth Simcoe?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hairline of the wig rising from the forehead at an almost right angle and chin seem very similar. I'm not quite sure about the nose, but that might have to do with the shadows in the portrait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Same pointy chin, same rather remarkable nose.
Sadly I have, save for an almost cartoonishly exaggerated doodle of her as an old woman, never seen another portrait of any sort of Margaret Graves.
However, assuming that I could be correct and these are Samuel and his adoptive niece, then it would only make sense for the second woman to be Margaret. Besides, Elisabeth had, save for two paternal aunts, no female relatives of whom you'd expect any sort of facial resemblance. Why would any of the two paternal aunts be depicted with Elizabeth's maternal aunt's husband?
If I'm correct here, and the three are The Three, then these silhouettes were probably made by Mary Anne Burges during one of her extended stays with the Graves' whenever she needed to escape her somewhat troublesome home life. If Mary Anne is the artist, these would have had to have been made prior to 30 December 1782, when Elizabeth (then still Gwillim) married her uncle's godson, a certain John Graves Simcoe. In that case, the Archives of Ontario would be wrong by a full decade, having dated the silhouettes to the 1790s.
Now, I could be wrong of course, because naturally I want my theory to be true, but if I were correct, that would be quite exciting.
Please do tell me what you think!

Stuff I did in a full set of Regency era clothing yesterday:
walked several kilometres
travelled on public transport, a coach (not the horse-drawn kind, alas) and a long distance train
jogged through a busy central station
danced
ate a not inconsiderable plate of chips (or fries, depending where you come from)
Won a round of Uno
On a more serious note, what I realise is that the argument that [insert historical garment of your choice] is impractical truly is a misconception.
You often see it in (historical) fiction with women ditching their allegedly restrictive bust support garments or long skirts in favour of trousers to 'come into their own' and pursue some sort of adventure, and that always disheartens me, because all it does is showing that the author clearly didn't bother reading up on the fashion of the time they're portraying, or maybe even take the time to talk to costumers or look at extant or reproduction garments.
Naturally, we're not talking about exaggerated court fashions here, clothes that were only worn in this one specific context (which is why we often have surviving examples of those; they were worn with care, and rarely), but almost any historical era's everyday wear can be comfy to wear for modern people.
All it takes is some getting used to how to dress yourself, and how to move in these specific garments.
There are of course spaces today that are not designed to be used by people in, say, panniers or hoop skirts as they are not part of present-day every day life, but as far as your personal comfort goes, you can absolutely achieve that with well-fitting garments (you wouldn't feel comfy in a size 8 or 20 if you're a size 12 buying modern clothes, either, right?).
Once you've learned how to move in the clothes of your choice, they feel as 'normal' as modern-day clothes to you. Short stays are no more comfortable or uncomfortable to me than a bra, and I can walk, even run, just as fast in a floor-length gown as I can in trousers.
Neither historical, nor modern clothes are inherently 'good' or 'bad', but wearable, provided you like and feel well in your clothing, and that's about all there is to it.

I will forever love it when an author dives into the fact that Hop and Leon aren't as close as they thought they were. Leon had work, was barely even home, and only really had the memories of what he and Hop used to do. He's essentially playing catch up, for once in his life, trying to figure out who Hop is now, rather than what he used to be. It probably makes him feel guilty. What kind of older brother is he? For every visit he has made, an even longer time was spent apart. Has he really not been paying attention?
For Hop I just think it's frustrating to still be seen as the person you were before than the person that he is now. He's starting to come into his own and the person that adores still doesn't fully see that. And it hurts to not be seen. It hurts more that there's a disconnect between the two of them. They used to be so close. Leon was Hop's world, and still is! So....why?
I really like it when people explore that part of their relationship. The sibling angst is real lol.

Today I, utterly perchance, learned that a friend and I share a bit of history.
Back in the 1630s, members of our respective families took opposing sides in the 30 Years' War and due to some wartime coincidences, my relative, let's call him "Great-Uncle B", a clergyman of some local power and import, felt threatened by the approaching army in which "Friend's Great-Uncle G" was a prominent-ish military commander, and fled to a place of safety.
The funny thing is, I don't believe my friend is aware of any of this, nor are our families geographically from the same region, so this very likely is the only time they (almost) crossed paths before said friend and I were introduced to each other almost 390 years later at a party.

I was always mentally prepared for when Gamefreak goes " oh yeah Adaman and Irida are canon btw" ( though we don't exactly have confirmation out the gate about Irida so that part is still in the realm of theory but like. Come on, look at Perrin), but I think the funniest thing about this whole thing is that people are like " ADAMAN FUCKED?!" and it's glorious. Prettiest man on earth had no game and yet he was able to spawn. A miracle, truly.

back on the topic of nemona’s character and how sweet a kid she is, it really touched my heart how she was so happy she cried at the end of the main story when we beat her in our battle. nemona, whose passion for battling she had to hold back constantly to fit in, finally finding a place to belong and be understood alongside you and eventually our arven and penny too. I can’t imagine how lonely she must have been before meeting us, even if she says she has other friends, I feel like she is the most attached to us because we are her first true friend she feels she can really let loose and finally be herself around.
( nods nods) I feel like so many people just. Forget that Nemona was lonely too. From the sounds of it, her parents are distant, her peers either put her too high on a pedestal or are too afraid to approach her bc of her battle skills. It's not as in your face as Arven or Penny, but like. The feeling of rejection sucks. Bring rejected for who you are and having to literally tone yourself down to fit in sucks. It's kinda amazing how kind Nemona is, despite it all.
And her crying at the end of the victory road battle was so sweet, cause she FINALLY had someone she didn't need to hide herself for. And because of that person, she met Arven and Penny, and then later Carmine and Kieran. Like!!!! I feel she was already grateful for one friend that she can be herself with. But 3? 5?! The girl must be sooooo happy, even despite the playful jabs, I genuinely think this is the best thing that happened to her.
Nemona the fucking beloved.
