Obsessed with the way the staff of the school let the students abuse, sabotage each other, tolerating discrimination without batting an eye.
The ruthless nature of the school is a good representation the socio-political climate of the story but also a good way to encourage those kids to engage in cutthroat manoeuvers, exploiting loopholes, scheming & deshamunisation to get what they want.
Those kids are basically groomed in becoming awful & abusive heads & high-ranked employees of corporations & pawns for their parents.
The fact the rule can be changed at the whim of Miorine's father when she finds a way to fight against his wishes or that the teachers & examiners never fully explain the rules to some students like Suletta didn't know she needed a crew to pass her exam DURING said exam or that she could retry it if she failed if it wasn't for Miorine informing her. Oof.
The concept of the duels are only for show, "to prove" to the world everyone has an equal standing here added to the chivalric image but in the end, it's all about who get to win, not matter the cost.
And of course, the most privilieged comes on top while others like Suletta despite having Aerial & Miorine as an ally or Chuchu with her House & the support of her community struggle & get stepped on. Their presence bother other students as the power & influence they have means to disturb the current status quo. Suletta's manage to influence Miorine & Guel, two people with influence in the school who will have preominents political roles in the future.
No wonder Chuchu has so much anger in her, as she represents the hopes for Earthians to be recognized on the same equal levels as spacians as well as their frustrations. For her, it's about fighting back but this place was also created by the same oppressive system. How do you win like that without sacrificing your principles? The only thing she can do is lashes out.
No wonder Suletta has a breakdown during her exam. She had an idealized vision of what her school life would be & wanted to found her own school on Mercury & she end up in this messy, awful place instead.
It makes you wonder what goes thru the mind of her mother, knowing your daughter has those dreams & carry the hopes of many mercurians as she likely knew how toxic & dangerous this environnement is. Does she wants vengeance or justice & disturb the status quo to establish a better system by using her daughter that way? It's likely that there will be a breakdown in their relationship hence Suletta learn about her true intentions for her.
I wouldn't be surprised if shit truely hit the fan because all this disregard for the abuse & the tension/competition between the students will lead to a student of an important family getting killed, which could have grave consequences moving forward.

Yandere Jack , Poseidon , and Beelzebub with a fem tomoe gozen reader from majo taisen please !
-As you walked down the hallway towards entrance to the arena, as you would be fighting next, you drew stares from others around you.
-You were so beautiful, absolutely stunning, but your march and armor told a different story, showing them that while you were pretty, you were a warrior, and the fierce determination in your eyes told them you were one not to be underestimated by any means.
-Your eyes sparkled as the doors opened, revealing your opponent (Poseidon/Beelzebub), as you were excited for this chance to fight for humanity, and to get a challenge.
-Your strength was legendary, but due to it, there were very few who could give you the challenge you wanted in a fight. Brunnhilde promised you, when she asked you to fight, that you would get a good fight.
-(Poseidon/Beelzebub) was stunned to see that his opponent was a woman, growing a bit annoyed at the thought of fighting a woman, but he was prepared to end this match quickly.
-You quickly proved why you were selected as a champion for humanity. Despite the heavy armor you wore, you dodged all his blows with ease, almost like you were dancing, and if he managed to get close enough where you couldn’t dodge, you blocked his blow, sending shockwaves through the arena.
-(Poseidon/Beelzebub) couldn’t believe that you were so strong, matching him blow for blow, injuring him with your own weapons, as you carried a bisento, a sword, a shield, and a bow, making you a well-rounded opponent to fight against.
-When he asked you, after he managed to stab you hard in the side but you remained standing, like you weren’t injured, “Human, what do you fight for?”
-Your eyes were bright and unwavering, a determined smile on your lips, “I fight so everyone can have a tomorrow! Everyone was given a chance to exist and you gods want to erase everything humanity has worked for and I’m going to do everything to ensure that they will all have a tomorrow.”
-You were selfless, being an honorable warrior and many cheered for you on both sides, finding you something worthy of their respect.
-The fight wound up ending in a draw, as you weren’t going down, much to not only his shock, but the shock of everyone in attendance, all while fighting back, not giving an inch, willing to do whatever it took, even at the cost of your own life.
-You awoke hours later in the infirmary, machines beeping around you as your eyes opened, “Oh… I lost?” a voice next to you surprised you, “No- you fell second, so technically you won, but it was announced as a draw.”
-You looked over to see (Love) sitting there, your eyes widening as he was bandaged from his fight as well, looking pretty beat up.
-Poseidon- You felt no malice so you weren’t worried he was here to try to finish the job, but you were on guard, just in case. He looked down at you, his face stoic but his eyes both curious and amused, “I never thought a human would manage to beat me. Your strength impressed me, but it also made me curious. You told me the reason you fight, but I don’t understand it. You’re a princess, so why do you fight for those beneath you.” You gave him a small smile, but your eyes were the same, focused and determined, “Without those people, what’s the good of a title, what good is power, if there is nothing worth protecting or fighting for.” His eyes widened, having not thought of that before, realizing the truth in your words. You then asked your own question, “May I ask why you’re here? Not many opponents would be worried about each other to sit with them in the infirmary.” He looked amused, a small smile appearing on his lips, “You intrigue me, and nobody has managed to do that before. I wish to know more about you.” There was something unusual about his words, something you couldn’t place, you didn’t know if there was a threat or not, so until you knew what it was, you were going to indulge him, but remain on guard, just in case.
-Beelzebub- His eyes met yours and you were surprised to see confusion in his own, he was confused as to why you were fighting so hard for others while putting your own health and safety at risk. He had those he cared about, friends he lost, but he couldn’t understand the meaning behind your drive to do something like this for strangers, people you’ve never met and never will meet. Beelzebub asked you this, why you did this, why you fought so hard for people who would probably never do the same for you, and you just grinned, “Because that’s what those with power should do- protecting those who can’t protect themselves.” He was silent for a few long moments, pondering over your words, he had never thought about using his power for something like that before, but he didn’t really care for his power, seeing more as a burden and curse more than anything. Beelzebub felt drawn to you, he wanted to learn more about what motivated you, and why you were the way you were as a person. He wanted to learn all he could to see if he could figure out how to be more like you, even if it was just a bit.
-Jack- You didn’t know this man, but his eyes held so many emotions, like they were swirling around, confusing you only slightly before he bowed his head, “Jack, at your service. I wanted to come and check on you after your breathtaking fight and I made the decision to wait for you to awaken.” You thanked him, offering him a small smile for his kind action which he smiled to as well. While watching you fight, your color and aura of honor and wanting to do what was right, to protect everyone, was so blazing, Jack had never seen such a color on anyone before. Jack remained with you, speaking to you about your fight, and while you knew this man was dangerous, you felt no malice from him, so you weren’t afraid. Jack would never harm a lady, at least one that didn’t try to hurt him first, it went against his code of honor, but he was curious about your strength, not as in he wanted to fight you, but he wanted to learn more about your drive, the reason behind your strength. You intrigued him, he wanted to know more about it; the fact that you were beautiful was an added on bonus, but he would never say that out loud, it would be impolite.

In my humble opinion, I think that a monster in heat loses all inhibition and any form of what is perceived as human-like restraint to not maul you to death after fucking the life out of you is mighty high.
So I was going on about Elias, right. Elias Ainsworth and his endless danger, danger thorns?
NSFW under cut. Might do an aftercare part 2 of this or try to write after I finish the manga. But for now, just thots.
Thought you guys might appreciate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@eyecandyeoz @majo-tsukiko
Do you know how hot it would be to get fucked in his beast form — heck, even in his current skull-headed humanoid form, while he struggles to keep his own thorns from literally ripping you to shreds?
Do you know how how it looks to have his thorns wrap around his wrists, crawl and squeeze up to his forearms and bicep in seek of anything to twist around or destroy while he's squeezing the base of said thorny vines with his massive hands?
Do you know how hot it must fucking look to see himself get cuts from his own doing because he's so in heat, muscles flexing, jaw clenched with steam as he huffs, grunts, and groans in pain, pleasure, and confusion?
For the hell of it, let me just add the fact how it would be suuuuuuch a turn on to have a new vine of thorns just whip and wrap around his neck because at this point, he's fighting for survival, desire, and keeping you alive from himself?
Do you know how hot it must sound for him to hover his skull-head over your ear and just snap that jaw and instill some bit of fear-induced adrenaline ring in your ear, reminding you that at any given point he can literally crush your bones with his mouth?
And then. Okay.
And then he regains some semblance of control and keeps you pinned down with his hand cordially on your head instead of your back because he's distracted and is torn between just getting it over with so he can 'deal' with this unknown feeling of having lost control over his own body and power, do some research and shit; or pace himself to properly fuck/make love to you?
So he slows down from the unrelentingly hard, deep, erratic thrusts from struggling with the thorns while fucking you but also trying not to literally rip you in half because he's such a sweet baby?
He relaxes eventually, thorns disentangling from his own body at a pace that matches the now deep, sensual head to hilt thrust. The massive, gloved hand over your head lifts for a moment — head pats, fingers tangled in your hair as if to apologize.
He lowers himself down to rub his muzzle against your cheek, caresses your shoulder everywhere until it's just him and no thorns and it's slow and sweet and loving and doting.
And you'll know when he's close because his fingers dig deep anywhere it lands; blanket, sheet, pillow, your skin, just for a little. You see him lift his head up to the ceiling as if to chant some sort of protection spell before he goes back down and bites you your shoulder hard at the perfect time of his release, filling you to the brim and then some.

Tumblr media
My dear anon I should be mad at you, you not only send me a request when are close but also a request for a fandom I don't write (not yet at least, a had just make it oficial), but you know what? Im not mad ONLY because you request for some of my favorites witches!!
My first time writing for Majo Taisen!! Moonie is excited!!
Tumblr media
Jeanne d'arc
Jeanne had been educated to don't want or expect anything and giving all of herself for others, specially when she becomes a fighter for her country, so being in love and in a relationship are one of those moments when she allow (unintentionally) to be a little selfish and desire something
For Jeanne is a slowly process to accept her feelings and start a relasionship, however once she does she completely cheerish and hold all the memories she has with you close to her heart
For Jeanne each passing day is important for her to learn of her own feelings and how to be in a relasionship, so as time pass by Jeanne learn little by little more about allowing herself to express and feel, and she is specially atracted to your shy nature
Jeanne is more used to just shutdown her emotions but you, unlike her, normally don't express much out of shyness and embarrassed, is something that surprised her at first but quickly becomes a little quirk of yours that fascinates and amuse her a lot. Your shyness is something that Jeanne love a lot from you, in her eyes is something so cute! Jeanne can't help but feel a little flustered whenever you are shy around her, sometimes she shows it directly and other times not
Jeanne see nothing bad with your shyness and never ask you to be more open or try to over come it, as long as she is by your side you will always have someone who do the things you don't want to, she is a warrior and is already used to fight for other but this time instead of doing it because someone ordered her to do it she does it out of love, she is happy with confronting others or just asking for something on your name is you have troubles doing it, also whenever you are saying something with shyness Jeanne waits with a lot of patience until you manage to put your thoughts on words or try to help you find the right words if you are struguling too much
Also, your shyness bring to Jeanne a sense of protectiveness, is her fighter nature and her love what motivate her to be protective over you, not the type to scare away everyone but she won't tolerate from anyone talking bad about you (even if it isn't for your shyness) or directly making you feel bad
Tumblr media
Mary Read
Being a powerful and important pirate isn't an impediment for Mary to have the opportunity to get to met you (even if you aren't a pirate), let alone to fall in love and start a relasionship with you
For Mary isn't difficult to neither notice or accept her feelings, the moment she notice the growing feelings of love for you she accept them imediatly with open arms and a smile, as well even before before start dating Mary is really open with her love for you (without saying it directly, like teasing or being playfuly with it)
When you two finally start a relasionship you will have to travel with her and Mary keeps you close all the time she can, every day with her it feels like a little adventures and it seems like if her love and affection will never end, and with your shyness just motivates Mary to show more and more affection towards you
Mary is completely in love with you and your shy personality, is something completely endearing and beautiful in her eyes, Mary is constantly braging about you and showing you off to everyone who is willing to heard her, with or without you being present (and everytime she talks about you she does with a loving and proud voice), you are pretty well known on the ship for how much she talks about you
Mary is constantly teasing you without even having the intention, Mary can't just stop talking about you, giving you compliments and braging about how cute you are! and not just that, Mary has the habit to hold you in her arms, hugging you tightly or carry you around, either in bridal style or on her shoulder
Mary doesn't see anything bad on your shyness, even if you had problems to express yourself and take some time to do it for her is just a sweet quirk of yours, however she is constantly trying to motivate you to be more expressive and talk more loud, assuring you that there is nothing wrong with saying what you want to say!
Your shyness brings her a protective feeling, Mary also sees you as pretty cute and innocent so she is always up to protect you and defend you from everything and everyone, Mary will never allow anyone to talk bad about you (specially on her ship)
Tumblr media
Himiko
It could be pretty difficult to get close to Himiko for how her life had been and for how much she lies, but once she does let you get close (for real) you become really important for her, and it just increase when she falls in love
Himiko is really smart and knows herself too well to don't know when she falls in love with someone, however she doesn't accept her feelings at first and is kinda annoyed by them, it took her a while to accept them but when she does she is direct with trying to win your heart
When you two start a relasionship you start to live with her (for the conditions and customs of the village, but it isn't like she is complaining) and since she trust you Himiko likes to have you physicaly close to her most of the time, even if you two aren't doing the same thing
Your shy personality totally amuses her, Himiko isn't shy at all, in fact she is quite the oposite, with a great gift for speaking and really smart, she like your shyness and it make her want to show more affection (physicaly and by words) just to make you flustered, on of her favorites activities is to make you flustered and blushy and, also, she loves finding more and more ways to do it, by compliments or directly being flirty (just to act innocently later), to get touchy and especially affectionate with you, teasing you and holding your hands so you can't hide your blush from her, Himiko just loves teasing you a little too much but she means well (her intention will never be to harm you)
As much as Himiko loves your shyness she is troubled by the thought of bringing you troubles for not being able to stand for yourself, Himiko tries to motivate you and teach you how to be more confidence and assertive, telling you how important is that you speak your mind off and express what you want and need (she doesn't admit it out loud but she is pretty worried of something happening to you)
Although, even when Himiko wants for you to stand up for yourself she has no problem with doing it herself, in fact Himiko doesn't let anyone say anything bad about you, she won't let anyone talk bad about the person she loves the most, even when she doesn't confront the person directly she will find a way to make them shut up

but wyll does leave you as a squid. he tells you he can't be with you anymore and the solution he comes up with is basically one wherein he treats you like a pet, or worse, a dirty secret that he hides away in the bowels of baldur's gate because he still cares more about being the blade of frontiers than he does you. i love wyll but the way larian wrote that ending feels both ooc for him and a touch cruel toward the pc.
the way canon portrays a character cannot be ooc. you can disagree with it, you can change it, but thats why fanfiction is called “transformative work.” the text is the text. your interpretation of the text is subjective, the events of the game are not subjective. they are facts that happen on ur computer screen. wyll asks you if you want to be his basement squid lover. you can say no. he doesnt force that on you.
it is cruel. it is a bad thing to do. wyll should not do it. it is obviously a bad thing for both you AND him
but hes NOT the blade of frontiers in this ending. hes the grand duke of baldurs gate.
if hes the blade of frontiers—he dumps you bc he wants to go be an adventurer and that is the goal n oath he literally sold his soul for once, n the reason he lives his life. u cant be an adventurer with him. ull scare people, theyll try to kill you. he relies on his relationship with the people of the sword coast, they orotect him n give him their kindness shelter n hospitality in order for him to protect them. he cannot do this if u are a mindflayer.
if hes a grand duke, he NEEDS you. he wants you so desperately hes WILLING to do something awful to you BC he has so many fucked up feelings for you
wyll was 17 years old when he left bg, he stopped studying law, he never led an army, every patriar has been killed, 2 dukes are dead, the city is in ruins. he has no idea what hes doing. he no longer has any agency over his own life, he does not have his freedom, n he WANTS you
i believe the feeling of love and the action of love are different. he feels in that moment a desperation to have you and hold you, the normalcy, the fairy tale promised. he clings to something he cannot have in u just as he can no longer have his freedom to be a hero, to be the man he would choose to be on his own. he is in awe of you. you are the champion of his city—the city he is now shackled to, that fits like a wet kitchen glove.
wyll has so very little agency in this game. i see this ending as part of his “bad end.” but it is also an interesting one.
is ascended astarion “ooc.” is dark justiciar shar? no person is just one thing and there is no inherent good or evil inside anyone. we are the decisions we make, goid or bad, every single day, and the reasons we make them. you make decisions, you live with them, and who you choose to be in every second is who you are. we are not fixed states. good isnt a thing you are—its a thing you have to work to do every day, and something you can and SHOULD work to do every day. but people slip up. theyre messy, confused, traumatized, they have big feelings, that make them want things that hurt other people. everyone makes mistakes, even people as noble as wyll.
you can prefer one decision line of a character over another. obviously i would prefer to be with wyll in avernus kicking zariel’s ass.
but if you deny someone the mere notion that they could do something hurtful or evil even to the people they love—you are denying their humanity n the full complexity of their soul. n u are denying the effort it takes to BE so goid like wyll is so good,
wyll is not some perfect well-adjusted good boy that goes around with a soul full of sunshine. everyone had dark thoughts and impulses and violence in them. everyone is equally capable of hurting people.
it is HARD to be good.
wyll is not performing the act of love—love is healthy n consensual n nutritional. but he feels a desperate pull of love towards you. you have been his light in all this. you have kept him sane and kept him going. you made every major decision in this journey for him. you are his leader, his lover. he is about to have the hardest possible job in the world with no understanding of how this job works. he hasnt been here for ten fucking years. he wants you. he wishes you could fix it, like you fixed everyone else.
its a weakness and a flaw.
wyll has flaws.
why would you want wyll to be perfect no matter what decisions u make? if you don’t like it—pick different decisions in the game and “earn” your happy ending, bc it DOES exist.
this is one of wyll’s most interesting narrative beats and us a fascinating thing to discuss and analyze. its part of a larger narrative, it serves a purpose in the story n to wyll’s story.
it IS cruel. thats the point. the story could not be going “this is fucked up” any more if it tried
you can transform the work any way u want, thats what fanfic n rp r for, but like
be uncomfortable! its supposed to make you uncomfortable! not every story is supposed to make you happy! some are meant to challenge your perception of a character n what you thought a character was possible of!
rant over, have a good night anon

LONDON (AP) — For holding a sign outside a courthouse reminding jurors of their right to acquit defendants, a retiree faces up to two years in prison. For hanging a banner reading “Just Stop Oil” off a bridge, an engineer got a three-year prison sentence. Just for walking slowly down the street, scores of people have been arrested.
They are among hundreds of environmental activists arrested for peaceful demonstrations in the U.K., where tough new laws restrict the right to protest.
The Conservative government says the laws prevent extremist activists from hurting the economy and disrupting daily life. Critics say civil rights are being eroded without enough scrutiny from lawmakers or protection by the courts. They say the sweeping arrests of peaceful demonstrators, along with government officials labeling environmental activists extremists, mark a worrying departure for a liberal democracy.
“Legitimate protest is part of what makes any country a safe and civilized place to live,” said Jonathon Porritt, an ecologist and former director of Friends of the Earth, who joined a vigil outside London’s Central Criminal Court to protest the treatment of demonstrators.
“The government has made its intent very clear, which is basically to suppress what is legitimate, lawful protest and to use every conceivable mechanism at their disposal to do that.”
A PATCHWORK DEMOCRACY
Britain is one of the world’s oldest democracies, home of the Magna Carta, a centuries-old Parliament and an independent judiciary. That democratic system is underpinned by an “unwritten constitution” — a set of laws, rules, conventions and judicial decisions accumulated over hundreds of years.
The effect of that patchwork is “we rely on self-restraint by governments,” said Andrew Blick, author of “Democratic Turbulence in the United Kingdom” and a political scientist at King’s College London. “You hope the people in power are going to behave themselves.”
But what if they don’t? During three turbulent and scandal-tarnished years in office, Boris Johnson pushed prime ministerial power to the limits. More recently, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has asked Parliament to overrule the U.K. Supreme Court, which blocked a plan to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda.
Such actions have piled pressure on Britain’s democratic foundations. Critics say cracks have appeared.
As former Conservative justice minister David Lidington put it: “The ‘good chap’ theory of checks and balances has now been tested to destruction.”
GOVERNMENT TAKES AIM AT PROTESTERS
The canaries in the coal mine of the right to protest are environmental activists who have blocked roads and bridges, glued themselves to trains, splattered artworks with paint, sprayed buildings with fake blood, doused athletes in orange powder and more to draw attention to the threats posed by climate change.
The protesters, from groups such as Extinction Rebellion, Just Stop Oil and Insulate Britain, argue that civil disobedience is justified by a climate emergency that threatens humanity’s future.
Sunak has called the protesters “selfish” and “ideological zealots,” and the British government has responded to the disruption with laws constraining the right to peaceful protest. Legal changes made in 2022 created a statutory offense of “public nuisance,” punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and gave police more powers to restrict protests judged to be disruptive.
It was followed by the 2023 Public Order Act, which broadened the definition of “serious disruption,” allowing police to search demonstrators for items including locks and glue. It imposes penalties of up to 12 months in prison for protesters who block “key infrastructure,” defined widely to include roads and bridges.
The government said it was acting to “protect the law-abiding majority’s right to go about their daily lives.” But Parliament’s cross-party Joint Human Rights Committee warned that the changes would have “a chilling effect on the right to protest.”
Days after the new act took effect in May, six anti-monarchist activists were arrested before the coronation of King Charles III before they had so much as held up a “Not My King” placard. All were later released without charge.
In recent months the pace of protests and the scale of arrests has picked up, partly as a result of a legal tweak that criminalized slow walking, a tactic adopted by protesters to block traffic by marching at low speed along roads. Hundreds of Just Stop Oil activists have been detained by police within moments of starting to walk.
Some protesters have received prison sentences that have been called unduly punitive.
Structural engineer Morgan Trowland was one of two Just Stop Oil activists who scaled the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge over the River Thames near London in October 2022, forcing police to shut the highway below for 40 hours. He was sentenced to three years in prison for causing a public nuisance. Judge Shane Collery said the tough sentence was “both for the chaos you caused and to deter others from seeking to copy you.”
He was released early on Dec. 13, having spent a total of 14 months in custody.
Ian Fry, the United Nations’ rapporteur for climate change and human rights, wrote to the British government in August over the stiff sentences, calling the anti-protest law a “direct attack on the right to the freedom of peaceful assembly.” Michel Forst, the U.N. special rapporteur on environmental defenders, in October called the British laws “terrifying.”
The Conservative government has dismissed the criticism.
“Those who break the law should feel the full force of it,” Sunak said in response.
Even more worrying, some legal experts say, is the “justice lottery” facing arrested protesters. Half the environmentalists tried by juries have been acquitted after explaining their motivations, including nine women who smashed a bank’s windows with hammers and five activists who sprayed the Treasury with fake blood from a firehose.
But at some other trials, judges have banned defendants from mentioning climate change or their reasons for protesting. Several defendants who defied the orders have been jailed for contempt of court.
Tim Crosland, a former government lawyer turned environmental activist, said it’s “Kafkaesque if people are on trial and they’ve got a gag around their mouth.”
“That feels like something that happens in Russia or China, not here,” he said.
To highlight concern about such judges’ orders, retired social worker Trudi Warner sat outside Inner London Crown Court in March holding a sign reading “Jurors – You have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to your conscience.” She was arrested and later informed by the solicitor-general that she would be prosecuted for contempt of court, which is punishable by up to two years in prison. Britain has strict contempt laws intended to protect jurors from interference.
Since then, hundreds more people have held similar signs outside courthouses to protest a charge they say undermines the foundations of trial by jury. Two dozen of the “Defend Our Juries” protesters have been interviewed by police, though so far no one apart from Warner has been charged.
Porritt said the aim is “to bring it to people’s attention that there is now this assault on the judicial process and on the rights of jurors to acquit according to their conscience.”
IS BREXIT TO BLAME?
Many legal and constitutional experts say the treatment of protesters is just one symptom of an increasingly reckless attitude toward Britain’s democratic structures that has been fueled by Brexit.
Britain’s 2016 referendum on whether to leave the European Union was won by a populist “leave” campaign that promised to restore Parliament’s – and by extension the public’s -- sovereignty and control over U.K. borders, money and laws.
The divorce brought to power Boris Johnson, who vowed to “get Brexit done,” but appeared unprepared for the complexities involved in unpicking decades of ties with the EU.
Johnson tested Britain’s unwritten constitution. When lawmakers blocked his attempts to leave the bloc without a divorce agreement, he suspended Parliament -- until the U.K. Supreme Court ruled that illegal. He later proposed breaking international law by reneging on the U.K.’s exit treaty with the EU.
He also became enmeshed in personal scandals – from murky funding for his vacations and home decoration to lockdown-breaking parties during the pandemic. He was finally ousted from office by his own fed-up lawmakers in 2022, and later found to have lied to Parliament.
“People were elevated to high office (by Brexit) who then behaved in ways which were difficult to reconcile with maintenance of a stable democracy,” said Blick, the King’s College professor.
The populist instinct, if not the personal extravagance, has continued under Johnson’s Conservative successors as prime minister. In November, the U.K. Supreme Court ruled that a plan by Sunak to send asylum-seekers on a one-way trip to Rwanda was unlawful because the country is not a safe place for refugees. The government has responded with a plan to pass a law declaring Rwanda safe, regardless of what the court says.
The bill, which is currently before Parliament, has caused consternation among legal experts. Former Solicitor-General Edward Garnier said “changing the law to declare Rwanda a safe haven is rather like a bill which says that Parliament has decided that all dogs are cats.”
But Blick says Britain’s unwritten constitution means that checks and balances are easier to override than in some other democracies.
“Nothing can actually be deemed clearly to be unconstitutional,” he said. “So there’s no real blockage (on political power) other than that’s where you come back to self-restraint.”
A DEMOCRATIC DEFICIT?
In Britain’s system, Parliament is meant to act as a bulwark against executive overreach. But in recent years, the government has given lawmakers less and less time to scrutinize legislation. Because the Conservative government has a large House of Commons majority, it can push bills through after perfunctory time for debate. Many laws are passed in skeleton form, with the detail filled in later through what’s known as secondary legislation, which does not receive the full parliamentary scrutiny given to a bill.
It increasingly falls to Parliament’s upper chamber, the House of Lords, to scrutinize and try to amend laws that the House of Commons has waved through. The Lords spent months this year trying to water down the anti-protest provisions in the Public Order Act. But ultimately the upper house can’t overrule the Commons. And as an unelected assortment of political appointees, a handful of judges and bishops and a smattering of hereditary nobles, it’s arguably not the height of 21st-century democracy.
“Of course the Lords is indefensible, but so is the Commons in its current form,” William Wallace, a Liberal Democrat member of the Lords, told a recent conference on Britain’s constitution. “The Commons has almost given up detailed scrutiny of government bills.”
Since Brexit, academics, politicians and others have been debating Britain’s democratic deficit in a series of meetings, conferences and reports. Proposed remedies include citizens’ assemblies, a new body to oversee the constitution and a higher bar for changing key laws. But none of that is on the immediate horizon — much less a written constitution.
The protesters, meanwhile, say they are fighting for democracy as well as the environment.
Sue Parfitt, an 81-year-old Anglican priest who has been arrested more times than she can remember as part of the group Christian Climate Action, has twice been acquitted of criminal charges. She, too, was interviewed by police after holding a sign outside court reminding jurors of their rights.
“It’s worth doing to keep the right to protest alive, quite apart from climate change,” she said.
“It would be difficult for me to get to prison at 81. But I’m prepared to go. … There is a sense in which going to prison is the ultimate statement you can make.”

Majo Taisen
Majo Taisen - The War Of Greedy Witches
Tumblr media
Do you want to watch women from history fight each other in skimpy outfits? Are you a fan of Record of Ragnarok?  Well, do I have the series for you! Majo Taisen aka The War of Greedy Witches
It’s like Record of Ragnarok but worse.
I’m sorry that’s a bit too harsh. It honestly isn’t a terrible series and I quite enjoyed reading it even tho it has quite a few flaws.
In this series, 32 women from history are brought forth to fight each other in what is known as “Walpurgis”. These women are now witches with magic related to their desire, their greed. The winner of the tournament gets their desire, a wish, fulfilled.
Tumblr media
Unlike Record of Ragnarok, the humans are pitted against each other and only one can win. However, like RoR, each time an opponent loses their soul is destroyed aka a permanent death.
Now what I think is the fatal flaw of the series is the main character Jeanne D’arc or better known as Joan of Arc. It’s not so much her character that I find a fault with, I actually quite like her. The problem lies in her being both the protagonist and one of the fighters. With her being the protagonist it can be assumed that she’s not going to lose, meaning the women going against her certainly will. She has a ton of plot armor and I don’t think this is a series where the protag would be killed off. In my opinion, because of this, the story loses some of its excitement.
I have two other smaller critiques:
1. The Outfits; while I get the skimpy outfits are “hot”, they’re not the most functional for a battle. Nothing is being protected. And honestly with some outfits I have no clue how they aren’t flashing everyone
2.  The length of the battles. The battles are very short and so are each character's back stories. I do like that the battles aren’t quite as long as Record of Ragnarok, which can feel drawn on sometimes. But in this case, they almost feel too short. Same with the backstories, they only last 4 pages at the most. And I think because of that I don’t grow an attachment to most of the characters or get super invested in the fights.
Now onto some positives! What I do like is that the fighters are all women. Personally as a woman myself, it’s nice to see a tournament with all these women fighting and being strong and confident on their own not relying on any men. I also like the characters, I think they’re all interesting and have very differing personalities. It’s fun to see how the characteristics in this series were inspired by the actions and personalities of the real-life people. As of right now, my favorite is Tomoe Gozen cause she’s so cute! Hehe
Tumblr media
One last pro is that there are multiple rounds. Record of Ragnarok has everyone only fight once, but with Majo Taisen, there will be a total of 5 rounds I believe. I’m curious to see how these future rounds will go since everyone has seen each other's magic. Meaning that they can prepare themselves for the fight rather than being thrust into a fight not knowing what the opponent can do.
This next part contains spoilers for both RoR and Majo Taisen as I’m going to talk about similarities.
Majo Taisen definitely seems to be inspired by Ragnarok. First, the cover designs are set up in a similar way. Both feature two of the fightsers on opposite sides of the covers. The name of the series between them in a rectangle shape
Tumblr media
(Majo Taisen on the Right; Record of Ragnarok on the Left)
Parts of the stories share similarities as well. For example, the whole bringing dead people from history to fight in a tournament where if they lose their souls will be destroyed and they will no longer exist. The next similarity, that I saw was in Fight 3 of Majo Taisen. The winner of the fight wins by constantly lying and using fake outs, exactly like the winner of fight 4 in Ragnarok. Another noticeable similarity is in Fight 6, where one of the women’s magic focuses on probability and the one scene reminds me of one from RoR’s Fight 3 where Kojiro is able to predict Poseidon’s move.  It’s not the exact same but it definitely was noticeably similar to me.
Tumblr media
(Right is Majo Taisen; Left is Record of Ragnarok)
Now I actually do like that Record of Ragnarok has clearly inspired other mangaka to create series similar. I very much enjoy this genre. I'm hoping that with future chapters Majo Taisen improves itself and really tries to break away from under RoR's shadow. Caused of right now it truly does feel like a worse version of Ragnarok.
I do recommend checking it out, as long as you don't take things too seriously. It's available in English on the manga hot app
(I took the images from fan scans so shout out to the people who worked on them)

Hello! I've been thinking about getting into magical girl anime recently and I noticed you reblogging stuff from a lot of different ones, so I figured it'd make sense to come to you with this: Do you have any good starter magical girl anime recs? I'd prefer something light and fun if possible :>
OH GOODNESS I am more than happy to recommend you some magical girl anime, I LOVE magical girls, it's one of my favorite anime genres!! I hope you don't mind me answering this on my blog haha, gives me an excuse to ramble x3
My favorite magical girl franchise is Pretty Cure - most often abbreviated and refered to as Precure. It's a sprawling franchise that's been going on for the past 21 years now so it SEEMS daunting, but the cool thing about Precure is each season is its own self contained story with its own plot and cast of characters. There are two continuities with two seasons (the original Futari wa Precure and its sequel Futari wa Precure Max Heart, and Yes Precure 5 and its sequel Yes Precure 5 GoGo!), but otherwise each continuity is one season, usually between 47-50 episodes long (each season lasts one full year of broadcast time).
The best way to start with Precure imo is to look at summaries/character designs and see which one sounds most interesting to you - there's no "order" to watch them in since they're all their own stories! Precure is a children's franchise so things are generally light enough, but there are definitely some seasons that touch on/deal with heavier topics. If you'd like my personal recommendations for "light and fun" seasons of Precure, I'd recommend Smile Precure and KiraKira Precure a la Mode!
Tumblr media
Smile Precure is about Miyuki, a girl who loves fairy tales, being tasked by the fairy Candy from Marchenland to assemble a team of 5 Precure to collect Cure Decor and revive the queen. It's bright, cheerful, and silly - I love the central cast and art style so much! A word about this season - this season was dubbed into English under the title "Glitter Force", which changed all names to English ones and cut out a handful of episodes (I believe the ones most heavily focused on Japanese culture that the dub team couldn't easily change to anything else). I personally do not recommend watching it like this! In all cases as far as Precure is concerned I recommend watching the original subtitled Japanese version.
Tumblr media
KiraKira Precure a la Mode is about Ichika, a girl who loves sweets and dreams of becoming a patisserie. She meets Pekorin, a fairy that can detect "kirakiraru", an energy contained in sweets that represent their feelings, which evil fairies start to steal. Ichika becomes a Precure to protect the sweets and forms a team of Precure that open up their own mobile sweet shop together. One of the things that's unique about this season are the fights - one of Precure's claims to fame is the high amount of physical fighting/hand-to-hand combat it contains. KiraKira tones that element down after previous seasons were seen as "too intense", so the fights in this season are more magic/special attack based. This annoyed some people, but I personally think KiraKira's a great, fun, unique entry to the franchise! (And the fights came back next season, so it's not like they were gone forever lol).
Apart from Precure, I'd also recommend Ojamajo Doremi!
Tumblr media
It's about Doremi Harukaze, the self proclaimed "unluckiest pretty girl in the world"; one day she stumbles upon a mysterious shop run by an old woman who looks like a witch. When Doremi calls her out, she turns into a "magic frog" - she WAS indeed a witch, and this is what happens to witches who are discovered in the human realm. The witch, Majo Rika, therefore enlists Doremi as a witch apprentice to help her turn back to normal. Ojamajo Doremi is really special - it's a more episodic series (tho there is an overarching plot each season) that really cares about its world and characters, it's so well written and wonderfully charming and funny and warm, really can't recommend it enough!
And for a final recommendation for now, I'll mention Cardcaptor Sakura!
Tumblr media
A true classic of the genre, this is about a girl named Sakura Kinomoto who discovers a mysterious book in her father's library; upon opening it she scatters the deck of cards contained within and releases the creature that was sealing them. This creature, Cerberus (but you can call him Kero-chan), informs Sakura that she must now track down and capture these cards, called the Clow Cards, to prevent disaster from occuring. The card capturing element grants it a "monster of the week" flavor, but this is another sweet series focused on Sakura and her relationships first and foremost, and it's a real treat.
I think these are enough to get you started! If you want more recommendations definitely don't hesitate to ask - I started with these because you asked for light and happy, but I also enjoy darker magical girl anime as well so if you ever want to explore that route I'd have recommendations there too!

Song of the Sea: Chapter 21: Radiant Bride
Tumblr media
Chapter warnings: mentions of starvation, questionable food choices, drugs, violent crime Series Warnings: explicit smut, alien anatomy (it's a monsterfucker fic, guys), major character injury, grief, canon typical violence, autistic meltdowns, and my terrible attempts at Mando'a
Previous chapter:
Next Chapter:
“You okay, Baby Mega? Gundark didn’t get you, did it?” Shiani poked her head into the girl’s room. They’d been on a pickup mission for Cid, and the drop zone had been  swarming with the creatures.
“No, I’m okay. Are you?” Omega had Lula in her lap, looking out at the stars as they headed back to Ord Mantell.
“Mad I couldn’t catch that little one.” Shiani laughed, climbing up to sit beside her. “Ran out of time, or I’d have had it as a snack.”
“You’d eat a gundark? Eeew!” Omega laughed.
Shiani scooped her up in her tentacles and lifted her up in the air, giggling too as she turned her upside down. “Not ew! I’d eat anything that didn’t eat me first!”
“Really?” Omega blinked. “Even gross stuff?”
“I’ve eaten plenty of gross stuff. I lived in the trash.” Shiani shrugged. “Hunting was bad. Sometimes, you do what you have to do. But some things you think are gross turn out to be tasty.” She set Omega in her lap and cuddled her. “I wasn’t a great hunter when I lived in Acopit, but I got better when I was in exile. I had to.”
“Is it weird to eat something you killed?” Omega looked up at her.
“I don’t think so. There’s honor in doing it yourself, and surviving by your own power.” She booped the girl’s nose with a delicate claw. “It does taste better when you cook it though.”
“You ate stuff raw?” Omega blinked.
“The nearest thermal vent was two klicks into Acopit territory, and every siren on Kamino wants to kill me.” Shiani shrugged.
Omega turned around and cuddled back. “I don’t understand why they don’t like you. You’re great.”
Shiani nuzzled into Omega’s hair gently. “I think you’re great too. My favorite girl in the galaxy.”
Omega grinned at her. “Tech’s your favorite guy, isn’t he?”
“Tech’s my favorite everything.” Shiani giggled.
“Would you ever marry him? Wrecker and I were watching a holo-show and some of the people in it got married.”
Shiani pondered thoughtfully. “I never thought about it before… but yeah. If he gave me the gift, I’d accept it.”
“Gift?” Omega blinked.
Shiani laughed. “When you want to get married, you give a gift. Something you make yourself, that they wear on their chests over their hearts.” She smiled fondly. “Males are supposed to ask, though.”
“Like the armor Tech’s making for you?” Omega flopped dramatically across the siren’s lap. “I saw it on the worktable. It’s too small for any of the guys.”
Shiani froze, eyes wide. “He’s making me armor?” Her hearts picked up with a delight that spread like warm sunlight throughout her entire body. Armor, like he and his brothers wore, marked them as a part of the squad. It was the ultimate symbol of love, to build something by hand that was so hard to make but so protective.
“I hope I didn’t spoil the surprise.” Omega whispered.
“I’ll still act surprised.” Shiani assured her. “Promise.”
Omega grinned and nodded. “How much longer til we land?”
“Not much longer.” Shiani nodded. “Want to come view the landing? Tech said I could do it this time.”
“Yeah!”
The two of them climbed out of the gunner’s seat and headed to the cockpit, where Tech and Echo were sitting and talking. Well, mostly Tech was talking, but Echo didn’t mind listening as he cleaned his pistol. Tech looked back and smiled faintly. “Right on time, cyar’ika.” She leaned over the back of his chair and nuzzled his face with her own, which made Echo snicker and Omega beam. Tech ignored both of them, patting the arm rest. “Come around here and take the controls.”
Shiani nodded and they swapped spots, so he was standing behind her. Echo let Omega sit in his lap to watch, watching the siren as she went through the landing processes. She was efficient with it, using tentacles to flip dials and pedals as her hands stayed steady on the controls.
“Very good.” Tech praised as they entered the atmosphere and headed for their usual hangar spot.
She grinned, engaging the landing gear and bringing them down gently, landing with barely a wobble. Echo smirked. “She lands better than you.”
Tech huffed. “This is a controlled environment. You have experienced my landings in a combat zone, those are not comparable.”
Omega giggled. Shaini just smiled and reached back for Tech’s hand. He took it and pulled her out of the seat. “Come along. I have a gift for you before we step out.”
“Gift?” Her eyes sparkled as he walked her back to the work bench, glancing over her shoulder at Omega. The girl gave her a thumbs up.
Tech stood her in front of the work table, adjusting his goggles and turning her so she was facing away. “Hold your arms out, let me make sure it fits.”
She blinked, lifting her arms obediently. Tech dropped a chestplate over her head, with flexible vest-like shoulder pieces similar to his own. It covered her gills but sat high enough not to impede her tentacles, with extended plates that went low on her stomach and sat above her belt in the back. It latched on the sides, and was much lighter than his armor that she’d picked up once or twice.
“I have vambraces for you as well. I considered leg cover as well, but I thought it may irritate your tentacles or be too heavy for you.” Tech adjusted the latches carefully, making sure they were secure. “Is this comfortable? I can make adjustments as needed.”
Shiani’s eyes sparkled with absolute delight as she turned around, checking the fit. “And you made this?”
“Yes. I should have made it sooner, and I apologize for waiting so long. Do you like it?” He startled when she threw herself into his arms.
“I love it. Love you.” She grinned, nuzzling into his chest happily. “I’ll wear it on every mission, promise.”
“Good.” He smiled, hands on her hips squeezing his familiar set of three. “You can paint it as you see fit, when we have time.”
Shinani nodded with delight, touching the metal when he let her go. Holy tides and stars… he’d put the armor on her himself. All she had to do was make him a gift in return and they would be married!
“Come along, we need to get our payment from Cid.” Tech waved for her to follow him down the ramp after his brothers.
“Cid could have mentioned the gundarks.” Echo complained as soon as his boots touched the ground.
“We made it out okay.” Wrecker grinned, scooping Omega up and setting her on his shoulder. She had a box of Mantell Mix, smiling as she tossed a couple pieces in her mouth. “How’s it this time?” He grinned
“Better than ever.” She beamed and gave him a piece.
They headed for the Parlor, all of them immediately noticing a crowd of armored figures they didn’t recognize. Shiani tucked herself a little closer to Tech, frowning,. “Who are they?”
“I am unsure.” He frowned, hand moving to her opposite shoulder firmly and giving her a comforting three squeezes. Wrecker carefully set Omega down and carefully put her in the middle of the formation to keep her safe. They ducked into the Parlor, finding it much more crowded than they remembered.
“Since when is this place so popular?” Echo frowned.
Shiani scrunched her face. “The appeal of the Parlor is it’s normally empty.”
“Let’s just get paid and go.” Hunter sighed, heading for the office. He hated the eyes on them, especially Omega.
Tech was thinking much the same thought about Shiani, the siren’s unique appearance catching lots of attention. She just looked annoyed by all of it, crossing her arms and tentacles tightly. She’d gained some confidence about sticking up for herself with strangers now, but stares still made her uncomfortable. An unusual looking hooded figure in a mask passed  as they approached the office door, and she lightly tugged Tech’s vambrace. “Pyke?” She murmured. Now that she was well versed in most sentient races, Tech had suggested she study common group affiliations and their symbols.
“It appears to be.” He nodded. “That is not a good sign.”
Omega frowned. “What’s a Pyke?”
“Spice trader. They’re a very violent gang.” Shiani patted her hair gently. “Nothing for you to worry about though. They’re leaving, and Cid’s not stupid enough to make deals with Pykes.”
Omega nodded, looking over at Hunter as a guard tried to stop him from getting into the office. “Appointment only.”
Hunter narrowed his eyes and gave Wrecker a nod. The big clone quickly seized the guard by the chest plate and threw him out of the way. Shiani leaned over and picked the office lock with her claw quickly. When they walked in, a green devaronian male with a familiar looking lizard purring in his lap came into view.
“It’s quite rude to barge into someone’s office unannounced.” He raised an eyebrow at them curiously, waving down the group of other enforcers who moved to intercept the group.
“It isn’t your office.” Hunter frowned.
“I beg to differ.” The man chuckled.
Omega spotted the lizard and blinked. “Ruby? What are you doing with her?”
“I paid Cid for her, and she delivered. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement.” He scratched the creature gently with his long nails, making her roll over on her back to get her belly rubbed.
“Where is Cid?” Shiani narrowed her eyes, head cocking to the side to examine his face. She usually tried to keep from being confrontational at the first meeting, but something was amiss and her family had just walked into it. “And who are you?”
“Cid is out. Permanently. The Parlor and surrounding territory are mine now… you all look like competent mercenaries. Well…. Most of you.” He eyed Shiani and Omega. “If you’re looking for employment, I might have some work for you.”
“We’ll think about it.” Hunter huffed.
“You didn’t answer my question. Who are you?” The little siren puffed up a little, standing her ground when the devaronian got up and walked to her side of the desk.
“I am Roland Durand.” He curiously examined her. “I’ve never seen anything like you. I’m a purveyor of oddities, Miss. You would be much better paid as my assistant than whatever you make with them.”
She narrowed her eyes. “I’m very happy with my family. Thank you.”
“Let’s just go.” Omega pulled at Shiani’s arm gently, trying to get out of the office quickly. Tech’s eyes were burning holes in Durand, and she was slightly concerned about a fight.
Shiani nodded, putting her arm around the girl. The followed the guys out of both office and Parlor, Hunter immediately shaking his head. “He’s a gangster. We’re not equipped to deal with anything like that. We need to leave Ord Mantell. Tech, get the ship ready and we’ll start supplying to leave.”
Omega frowned. “But what about Cid?”
Tech shook his head, arm firmly around Shiani’s waist now. “She was likely eliminated or forced out of the area, if Durand’s tone is anything to go by.”
Omega looked horrified. “Would they really kill her? We need to look for her, she could be in trouble! She’s our friend.”
“She is our employer.” Shiani shook her head. “You have a good heart, Baby Mega. But that care doesn’t go both ways.”
The girl dug her heels in. “She’s helped us. It’s only right to do the same in return.”
Hunter sighed, starting to kneel and try to explain for the millionth time why everyone wasn't their friend, when Cid's voice caught his attention from behind. “At least someone was worried about me.”
Cid was standing in the doorway of the Havoc Marauder, arms crossed. Shiani  matched her stance. “What did you do to make Durand take your Parlor?”
“We'll talk about it in private, Suckers. Come in.”
Tech cleared his throat. “Are you inviting us onto our own ship?”
“You're catching on, Goggles.”
“Rude.” Shiani grumbled, but walked up the hatch with an extremely displeased look.
They gathered around and Cid offered an explanation. “I see you met Roland Durand. He used to be a client of mine… he's the son of crime boss Isa Durand. I guess he's trying to make a name for himself out from under his mother's shadow, so he's making a deal with the Pykes.”
“Stupid.” Shiani shook her head.
“Yeah. But he had enough goons to run me out of my bar.” Cid huffed.
“Why would he want a bar on Ord Mantell anyway?” Hunter raised a tattooed eyebrow.
“Ord Mantell sits in the crossing of multiple hyperspace lanes. Ideal for smugglers, and my parlor is right in the middle of all the action.” Cid explained. “He saw the value, but I'm going to get it back.”
“And how do you intend to do that?” Echo's native sass had been mostly repressed by Cid's absolute audacity thus far, but he was finding it again.
“You're going to help me. We're all in this together.” Cid threw her arms over Hunter and Wrecker’s shoulders. “We've been through a lot together so far, and I've done right by you boys. I'm good with secrets.”
Tech narrowed his eyes. “You are blackmailing us into compliance.”
“You catch on quick.” Cid nodded.
Shiani bared her teeth and hissed softly, making the trandoshan take a step back and give her blue rings and split jaw an uneasy look. “Threatening people you need help from is a bad idea.” She growled. She usually didn’t let Cid
Omega immediately got between them. “I'm sure Cid didn't mean to make that sound like a threat. She's just scared and needs help. She helped us when we needed it.” Her little hands pushed gently at Shiani's chest plate. “You're sorry, aren't you Cid?”
Cid nodded immediately. “Yeah. Sorry, Suckers. Like Tiny said, I'm just in over my head.” She tried to placate the siren.
“We should help. She's helped us, and her Parlor is her home and livelihood.” Omega pleaded. “It's the right thing to do. How would we feel if we lost the Marauder?”
“We do not interact with gangsters.” Tech sighed, patting Shiani on the arm to get her to relax, until she covered her mouth with her hand and stared daggers at Cid. “But I see your point, as much as I disagree.”
Hunter grumbled and looked at Cid. He really couldn't afford to be on Cid's bad side, and Omega looked so adorably sure they'd make the altruistic choice. Even Shiani, who he was sure was about to bite Cid, softened a little at her big brown eyes. “Fine. What's your plan?” He sighed.
“There's an access point to the old mining tunnels that goes right under my office. My sources say Durand has a shipment of 6 cases of spice in my office right now.”
Shiani nodded. “Saw it. Big boxes.”
“We'll go into the tunnels and steal the shipment. Then when Durand can't deliver,  the Pykes will take care of him for us.” Cid tapped the holo table with a claw.
“Why don't we just go in directly? I hate sneaking around.” Wrecker grumbled. “We could take his guards.”
“No one can know we're involved.” Cid said it too fast, and Shiani felt fear bubbling up around her like an underwater steam vent.  “The Pykes are no one you want to cross. They'll make you wish you were dead a long time before they kill you.”
Shiani sighed, drumming her claws together. “And how will you distract Durand? If he's in the office, we can't steal the spice without being seen.”
“I've got Bolo and Ketch on it.” Cid smiled. “They'll steal the lizard. He's nuts about that thing, he'll go looking for it.”
“They won't hurt Ruby, will they?” Omega fretted.
“Ruby’s got teeth and claws. She’ll be fine.” Shiani patted her head. “Don’t worry. Go get your bow.”
Omega nodded and headed to her room to get her gear, and Shiani followed Tech to the cockpit to double check the ground security protocol. He didn't like Cid getting into the ship uninvited.
“Were you actually going to bite her?” He asked after a moment.
“It crossed my mind.” She said firmly. “She threatened my family.”
“You are the most remarkable woman in the galaxy.” He dipped his head against hers, arms around her waist as he squeezed his little siren three times. “Loyalty means everything to clones. Yours means everything to me.”
Shiani smiled. “I’d follow you anywhere, Tech.”
He picked up his helmet and nodded. “Then let us make this quick. I have no interest in running into the Pykes.”
She followed him back out, rubbing her thumb against her chest plate. She didn't relish a fight with notorious gangsters either… but she'd follow Tech anywhere he led her.

No one was thrilled about going into a manhole, but the group followed Cid to the old mining tunnels she’d indicated. It was creepy and musty smelling inside, with a set of mining carts hanging from a cable that wound its way through the cavernous abandoned mine. Shiani investigated them curiously, then scrunched her face and looked at Tech. “Rusty.”
“They are in poor condition.” He agreed. “But given a little time, the two of us could reasonably get the motors running.”
Cid shook her head. “The motors are too loud. This is a stealth mission.”
Wrecker pouted immediately. He hated stealth missions.
Shiani patted his arm. “Into the cart. We’ll have to work the levers.”
He sighed. “Okay… but a fight would have been more fun.”
“I’ll wrestle with you when we get done.”
Cid eyed the petite siren as she swung into a cart next to Tech and the two of them broke the rusty lever free. Wrecker was doing the same in the next one, Hunter and Echo working the third loose. “Doesn’t seem like your style to beat up on a little woman like Suckers, big guy.”
Wrecker laughed. “She’s a lot stronger than she looks, Cid.”
“She wins more than 90 percent of the time.” Hunter chuckled.
“She is strategic. And it is 92.67 percent.” Tech sounded amused too.
Shiani smiled at the praise and started helping Tech work the lever to push them along the overhead track. The cavern was narrow here, and it reminded her of when she was first exiled, before she’d made the little cavern in the belly of the inactive volcano her home. It had been just a dark and lonely cave, only safe by comparison to an execution. That was before Tech had filled it with light and his voice, and she found her place in the galaxy beside him.
She wasn’t alone anymore. Someone would face the dark places with her.
They got to a large door and Cid gave them a sharp look. “Once this is open, not a peep out of any of you. You’ll wake the hive.”
“Hive?” Hunter frowned.
“The tunnels have a little… pest infestation problem.” Cid said quickly. “But it won’t be a problem if you all keep your traps shut. That means no humming, Suckers.”
Shiani looked unimpressed. “I hum when I’m happy. Don’t see how this is a happy time.”
“We’re not scared of a few bugs.” Wrecker grinned. “Right, Shiani?”
“The closest thing I know to bugs is a crab. I can eat those.” She shrugged. “Can I eat these bugs, Cid?”
“I wouldn’t recommend it.” Cid shook her head, and waved for Wrecker to come shove the door open. “Remember. Not a sound.”
Past the door, the tunnels were full of giant cobwebs. Shiani held her flashlight tightly, the only sign she was any bit uncomfortable was a tentacle wrapped around Tech’s ankle. Behind her, Wrecker was just as deeply uncomfortable at the distance between them and the bottom of the cavern, so far below he couldn’t see it even when he pointed his own flashlight downward into the dark. When it slipped from his fingers, every one of them froze and watched in silent horror as it bounced down against the webbing and went out, out of sight in a turning depression underneath them. Cid looked like she was about to crumple, shaking and staring, so Shiani lightly patted her arm. “Nothing woke up.” She whispered gently. A low, animal cry from below echoed as she spoke, but seemed to be the groan of something rolling over in its sleep.
Cid nodded and swallowed hard before giving Wrecker a murderous look. “Nice going.”
“It was an accident.” He looked a little red-faced, but it was hard to tell in the dark of the caverns.
“Just keep moving.” Hunter grumbled, shaking his head. Tech went back to his lever, Shiani helping him. Not that he needed her help, but he liked having it. This entire adventure seemed entirely ill-advised, but having her cut down on the bickering that usually came up between his brothers… and himself, if he was honest. He and Wrecker bickered a lot.
When they arrived up under the office, Shiani held her tentacles up like railing to make sure all the clones got out safely. Hunter sighed at the stairs going up, then looked at Cid. “He out of the office yet?”
“Ketch just commed, he’s out. Let’s go, quick.” Cid urged, pushing them up the stairs. “He won’t be gone for long.”
The top of the staircase led to a trapdoor, which they pushed up. A rug slid off the top, and Echo made a face at the skittering of rodents out of their path. Before he could complain too much, Cid admonished him to be quiet and started counting the crates of spice to be sure they were all accounted for. Hunter gave a couple quick hand signals, and the clones set themselves in a line to start passing the crates back efficiently. Shiani and Omega remained near the bottom, the siren taking each crate and loading it into the carts while the girl tied them down as securely as she could. “What even is this stuff, Shiani?” She grumbled. “Why’s it worth so much?”
“Drugs.” Shiani set another crate down. “Illegal drugs. People pay lots of credits to get it, because they’re not supposed to have it.”
“But why do they want it?”
“Sometimes life feels so bad, people want to escape.” Shiani sighed. “Drugs make an easy escape. Can’t be sad or stressed when they’re high.” She shook her head and patted Omega’s head. “Doesn’t fix the problem though. It’s still there when you wake up.”
“How do you know so much about it?” Omega blinked at her as the siren took another crate from Wrecker.
“Sirens are not that different. When some sirens get tired of life, they suck on puffer fishes.” Shiani chuckled. “Looks stupid. Makes them act stupid, too.”
Omega giggled and finished securing the crates as Wrecker came down with the last one. The guys looked to be in a hurry, Cid rushing them from behind. Hunter pulled a quick strap over the last crate. “Secure enough. Let’s go.”
“Durand coming back?” Shiani frowned as Tech waved her and Omega to the carts.
Tech nodded, pulling her in and securing the door as a blaster shot rang out. “That would be him shooting the door lock.”
“Oh no. Lever time.” She grabbed ahold of her side of it and they started their way through the tunnels as quickly as they could.
Hunter glanced back as a couple of the enforcers got into another cart behind them and got the engines working. “We’ve got company.”
“Blasters?” Shiani reached for the pistol on her hip. Tech insisted she carry it, though she frequently forgot it was there. She was a close combat kind of girl.
“You’ll wake the hive!” Cid hissed.
“This hive will be inconsequential if we are shot.” Tech ducked and pushed Shiani down before she could get hit. “I do not think, even with our accuracy, we can take them out quick enough to avoid being caught.”
Shiani blinked, peeking up. “Cover your ears!”
Hunter blinked, then activated the filters in his helmet and put his hands over Omega’s ears.
Shiani sucked in a deep breath and leaned over the cart edge, letting out a scream that blew their pursuers off the tracks and into the caverns below. She snapped her jaw shut and looked down, watching them vanish. “Sorry Cid.”
The trandoshan shuddered as another creepy animal cry echoed from beneath them. “... I don’t like this.”
Tech frowned. “Maybe we should activate the motors and get out of here as quickly as possible.”
“Good point.” Hunter frowned, crouching to examine the mechanism. Fortunately it wasn’t in as bad shape as they’d initially thought, and all three motors came to life after a moment. They started hurrying along the track, over where Wrecker had lost his flashlight, when a swarm of creatures came hurtling up towards them. Shiani squeaked when they started biting, tearing into her exposed head tentacles. Wrecker doubled over to protect Omega, and Cid started swearing and swatting at the monsters.
Shiani screamed again, a group of them falling out of the sky and back into the darkness, but more just replaced them. Tech threw an arm over her to try to protect her face, throwing his flashlight up in an attempt to aim his blaster. The creatures screeched, wheeling out of the way of the light. “Use your torches!” He called over the din of screeching insects and yelling clones. It was hectic, everyone clinging for dear life to the carts to avoid being thrown over the edges with the jostling monsters and blaster shots ringing out. One by one, the crates of spice were knocked over the edge and went hurtling to the ground below.
“The spice!” Cid wailed, watching her chance at a get rich quick scheme fade away.
“Forget it!” Hunter snapped, the group finally making it to the manhole door. Wrecker wrenched it open and everyone darted out, letting the big clone slam it shut aggressively hard.
Everyone collapsed to the ground, catching their breaths. “At least we got rid of the spice?” Omega gave an optimistic, tired smile.
Something squeaked behind her, and the clones and Cid turned around. Shiai was sitting on the ground, holding one of the creatures with her claws jammed into it as it squealed and fought against her and the light outside. She was grinning brightly, head cocking back and forth and heedless of the little bites and scratches all over her face and head. “Shiani…?” Tech frowned. “Cyar’ika, what are you doing with that?”
“Snack. Insects are like crabs, right?” She turned it, looking for a place to sink her fangs.
Hunter, Omega, and Cid looked disgusted. Wrecker just looked confused, watching her. “You’re gonna eat a bug?”
“No, she is not.” Tech grumbled, pulling the flapping and screeching monstrosity from her hands. It tried to bite him, still screaming, until he tossed it in the air and shot it before it could get its bearings.
Shiani made a sad little noise. “But Tech…”
“I will get you something to eat after this. I will find water and catch you a fish myself, or buy whatever you would like from a cantina. But please do not make me watch you eat an insect. I fully intend to kiss you later, and that would be detrimental to the experience.”
She scrunched her face. “They serve crab in cantinas on some planets we visit. What is the difference between crab and bug, except crab is wet and bug is dry?”
“A crab is served cooked, to begin with.” Tech gave her a hand up, and she sighed.
“Sushi isn’t cooked. Neither is cookie dough, and Baby Mega and I ate a whole bowl last week.”
Hunter gave Omega a stern look. “Really?”
“It was good.” She smiled sheepishly.
Cid sighed, nudging the dead insect out of the way with her foot. “C’mon. Let’s go wait for Bolo and Ketch to send the signal.”
Hunter sighed. Now he had to deal with her on his ship for even longer… “Fine.”
Tumblr media
It didn’t take long for Cid to get the message from Bolo and Ketch saying the Pykes had arrived and come for Durand. “They don’t take kindly to unpaid debts, so they’ll fix our little problem for us.”
“Your problem.” Shiani raised an eyebrow. “We’re just helping clean up mess.”
Cid huffed. “And here I was thinking about giving you guys dinner on the house.”
“The least you can do, after I got bit by all those flying things.” The siren chuckled, dabbing bacta on her many scratches. “I didn’t even get to eat it.”
“Were you actually going to eat it?” Cid eyed her.
Shiani nodded. “I was. But I like kisses more than snacks..”
“How do you go from threatening to bite me or apex predator mode, to a teenager in love?” Cid huffed.
“I’m not a teenager. I’m twenty three standard years old.” The siren laughed. “Teenage years were terrible. All suckers and elbows, never knew how to fix my head to look pretty, and then got banished.”
Tech chuckled. “You looked fine when we met.”
They walked into the Parlor and found Durand’s armored enforcers laid on the floor dead. Omega’s eyes went wide before Shiani put her hands over them. Cid just grinned. “See. Told you it would take care of itself. Now we can clear this mess out and start over.”
“I guess you want our help with that too?” Wrecker grumbled.
Shiani and Hunter both turned their heads. “I don’t think the problem is all gone yet, Cid.” The sergeant muttered.
Coming out from the office, four Pykes were escorting a humble looking and handcuffed Roland Durand. He spotted them, and in a desperate bid to save his own skin nodded at them. “They’re the ones who stole the spice. I know she was involved, and she got them to help her.”
The Pyke leader turned, examining the group who all pushed Omega to the middle protectively in the face of danger. “Return the spice, and we will consider the matter between us resolved.”
“We don’t have it.” Cid frowned.
“Then you are of no further use to us.” The Pyke drawled. “Kill them.” The Batch all reached for their own weapons, and Shiani’s claws came up along with her bared teeth.
Hunter realized quickly they were in over their head, and slowly lowered his blaster. “We don’t have the spice, but we know where it is. We can retrieve it and bring it back to you, if you’ll let the matter die here.”
“My patience is wearing thin. You have until nightfall to retrieve the spice. But the child remains here.”
Hunter started to balk, but Shiani put a hand on his shoulder. “They won’t hurt Baby Mega, as long as we do what they say. If we don’t, everyone dies here.” Her eyes moved sharply to the Pyke leader. The gang was ruthless and legendary, but they kept their word… most of the time. She would have to hope this was one of those times.
The sergeant was backed into a corner with no option, and he hated it. Cid just nodded, looking terrified. “Suckers is right. It’s not a negotiation. We’ll all die here unless we get that spice.”
Shiani knelt, putting her hands on Omega’s shoulders. “Listen to me.” She whispered. “Be very brave, Baby Mega. We’ll be back for you. We’ll always come back for you. Stay quiet and safe, okay?”
Omega nodded shakily, glancing around. “I will.”
Shiani hugged her tightly and got up, running her tongue over her fangs as she looked at the Pyke leader. She wanted to puff up, make threats to bite and claw until they were all bleeding. But that would provoke them. Family didn’t provoke the enemy. They just protected their own. “By nightfall?”
The Pyke nodded and turned away, pointing for Omega to sit at a round table and shoving Durand over beside her. The Batch regretfully had to leave her and headed outside.
“How are we going to get the spice?” Wrecker frowned. “Do we have to go back in there with those things?”
“Irlings.” Tech looked up from his datapad. “They are called irlings. They are nocturnal and photosensitive, so I recommend finishing this before dark.”
Hunter rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Not much choice there. Tech, we need a plan.”
“Working on it.” Tech showed Shiani his datapad, and her eyes brightened.
“I love lights.”

Wrecker and Cid were lowered by the Marauder's outboard pulley system into the irling nest below the mining track. Hunter was waiting at the controls anxiously, pulling each crate of spice up and pushing it back inside to Shiani. “We could use a hand here, Tech.” He grumbled.
“I’m giving you six extra arms. Let him work..” The siren chuckled. “If we need it, you'll be glad he did.”
“It's almost dark. Those things are going to wake up.” Echo muttered tensely from the cockpit.
“I am preparing for the possibility.” Tech assured him.
“Four crates up.” Shiani chirped. “Cid and Wrecker can ride the last two up.”
Hunter nodded, touching his comm. “Got the last two secure, Wrecker?”
“Yeah. This place is creepy, pull us up.”
Hunter started the pulley once again and glanced back at the setting sun. Shiani patted his shoulder. “Baby Mega is strong, Hunter. She'll be okay.”
“I hate that she's in this mess. And for Cid of all people.”
Shiani sighed. “I don’t like Cid much either, but I do think she feels bad about getting Baby Mega into trouble. Cid’s selfish, not evil.”
“Maybe I should have let you bite her.” He huffed.
“Then Cid would be mad. Selfish means vindictive when crossed.”
He sighed. “Yeah, ye-”
“Hunter! Get us out of here! They're swarming!” Wrecker’s voice screamed through the comm, and blaster fire echoed below.
“Tech!” Shiani yelped. “The swarm’s coming up!”
Tech quickly tightened a screw and tossed her an oblong shaped device. “Twist counterclockwise on the left side! You have six seconds after.”
Shiani twisted the device sharply. “Tell Wrecker to close his eyes.” She leaned out and threw the invention straight down into the hole. “Incoming!”
Hunter hit the comm. “Eyes shut!”
Shaini shielded her face, listening to the swarm getting closer and the echo of Wrecker’s screaming. “Four. Five. Six.”
The cavern below lit up with an explosive flashbang, sending the irlings scattered and diving back to their silent and dark nest. Hunter hauled Cid and Wrecker to safety, he and Shiani pulling them up to the platform of the ship when they came into view.
“See Muscles? That wasn't so bad.” Cid's voice was shaky and her claws clutched Shiani's arm a little too tight.
Wrecker just groaned miserably.
Hunter patted his back. “C'mon. We gotta get the kid.”
Shiani darted back to Tech with happy eyes. “That was brighter than all the lights on Tipoca City!”
He chuckled and pulled her to him by the hips, so his chin rested against her stomach where he was seated and she stood. Her praising his invention was his favorite part of this mission. “Should I make you lights more often?”
“I like lights. It's dark underwater.” She smiled and traced a claw over his cheek. “Baby Mega lets me sit under her lights in her room sometimes.”
“Once we collect Omega, you can do that.” He let Echo pull the ship around, though, so he didn't have to let her go yet.

The Batch walked into the Parlor with six crates of spice and set them in front of the group of collected Pykes. “Here. We kept our end of the deal.”
The leader nodded. “Then the matter between us is resolved. The child is free to go.”
Omega ran straight to Hunter, who tucked her immediately to his side. She looked anxiously back at Durand, who was quickly realizing that the matter between Pykes and Batch was solved, but his life was still in danger. “What's going to happen to him?”
Shiani shook her head. “Don't look.”
“But he just made a mistake! He shouldn't have to die over it.” Omega turned pleading eyes to the Pykes. “Don't hurt him!”
Shiani winced as the Pykes forced Durand to his knees over a crate. “Killing one means their family comes for revenge.” She murmured, hand on Omega's hair. She was thinking of sirens, who'd swim halfway across the planet after a missing member of their clans, or who'd hunt the largest sea monsters on Kamino if it meant protecting their children.
Cid nodded. “Just call it a bad deal and move on.”
“We do not accept bad deals.” The Pyke sneered.
“If you kill him, you'll have a blood feud with Isa Durand. Do you really need that heat right now?”
Hunter moved to cover Omega's eyes as a knife came down, but instead of killing Roland Durand they only cut his horn at the scalp. He was dumped on the floor, and the Pyke leader pocketed his trophy. “Our business is concluded. See that our paths do not cross again.”
The other Pykes took the spice and filed out, leaving Durand humiliated but alive.
Omega crept over to him. “Are you okay?”
He touched his horn and winced. “It's a small price to pay…” Ruby hopped into his lap comfortingly, and he looked over at the group who were all checking on Omega. Shiani spotted his expression and stepped out of the family huddle to approach him.
“You're lonely.” She said matter-of-factly. “Miss you family?”
“I thought striking out on my own would earn my mother's respect.”
Shiani chuckled. “Go home to your mama. Love is more important than respect, and she loves you.”
“You don't even know my mother.” He frowned.
“I know mamas. They love, even the tough ones. Go home.”
He sighed and nodded. “... good idea.”
Once he'd shuffled out, Shiani went back to Tech's side. Cid smiled. “First round is on the house.”
“You owe us more than that.” Wrecker laughed.
“Don't push your luck.” The trandoshan chuckled. When she glanced over her shoulder, Tech and Shiani were already slipping into a back booth to look at datapad holos of Nabooian paper lantern festivals. “Those two are easily entertained.”
Hunter chuckled back. “Only when they're together.”

Mathieu Dumas gets scolded
@snowv88 wrote
I've never heard of that story with Berthier, Dumas and Eugene, would love to hear it 😆
Well, it’s actually not much of a story but more of an image that seems to be taken right out of some slapstick comedy. Plus, I’m sure I had already translated this bit before but I seem unable to find it again. So here’s a fresh translation (thank you, Deepl!):
From the Souvenirs du lieutenant-général Mathieu Dumas, Tome 3:
For context: this takes place in 1809, after the battle of Wagram and the armistice of Znaim. Dumas is charged with monitoring the execution of the armistice with the Austrians.
[…] Despite the line of demarcation being very clearly drawn in the convention, I often had, in concert with my colleague the Austrian commissioner, to rectify some small infringements in the position of the outposts. The most remarkable was the one which Prince Joseph Poniatowsky allowed himself on the frontier of Gallicia: informed that an Austrian column of a few militia battalions, having with them four pieces of cannon, was withdrawing into Hungary, where the whole Austrian army had rallied, he crossed the line of demarcation with a strong detachment, cut off this column, took an advantageous position on Austrian territory, and pretended to keep it, as well as the prisoners and artillery he had captured. I submitted to the major general the very well-founded complaints of the Austrian commissioner, and asked him for his orders before writing to Prince Poniatowsky. The major general answered me that this affair did not concern him, and that the execution of the treaty of armistice was entrusted to me under my responsibility.
Berthier: Oh, no, no. Leave me out of this. You know perfectly well how this will turn out. Go get through this one yourself.
I did not hesitate to give Prince Poniatowsky the order to comply with the treaty, to return the prisoners and the artillery, and to bring his troops within the line of demarcation. The emperor, directly informed by the prince of his incursion and of the advantages which could result from it in the event of the resumption of hostilities, did not approve my decision. He sent for me to give him an account of it in the presence of the prince major general and the viceroy of Italy; he strongly reproached me, as well as the major general, for wanting to protect the interests of the enemy and for courting them at his expense.
"What do you think you are doing, gentlemen, deciding on your own authority on matters of such importance? It is you who command the army, and I am here il ré di cope? Let us see, General Dumas, your register of correspondence."
[The Italian expression is unknown to me.]
I handed it to him, pointing out my last letter to Prince Poniatowsky; he went through it, displayed great irritation, and threw the register on the floor. As I was answering the questions he addressed to me on various points in dispute relating to the execution of the armistice, and more particularly on the place of Zara, in Dalmatia, which he demanded to be handed over immediately, Prince Eugène, who was walking with him, turned around and gestured to me not to answer; but this was impossible. Berthier kept the most obstinate silence.
This is the scene I just love to imagine: Napoleon, giving his sermon while stomping through the room, Eugène always at his heels and signaling in exasperation behind Napoleon’s back to Dumas to shut the F up, man, while Berthier pointedly stares at a corner of the room, zoomed out.
"You believe yourselves to be very important men, messieurs chiefs of staff! I have made you into too great lords, and you caress those of the Austrian court. If an Austrian general officer had taken it upon himself to give such orders, he would have been sent to a fortress. The chiefs of staff must only be instruments; I have only to bring in young Marboeuf, an ordinance officer, who is there in the salon de service, and I will make him my major general."
Which, I guess, shows how much respect Napoleon had for Berthier and his co-workers. Not. He basically states that every dimwit could do Berthiers job. (We’ll see about that during the Hundred Days, Your Imperial Snobbiness...)
After having thus indulged us, he dismissed us, and there was no more talk of this affair. [...] Although I feared that I had displeased him by doing my duty, I was nonetheless very well treated: the emperor named me grand officer of the Legion of Honour, and granted me an endowment of thirteen thousand francs from the property of convents suppressed in the duchy of Parma [...].
But as is the case so often, Napoleon is all bark, no bite 😊.
