Delicious In Dungeon Volume 13: Lion Named Desire
Tumblr media
It's been a year, a very long and painful year, but the penultimate volume of Delicious In Dungeon is finally here.
And it does not disappoint.
If you'd like to read the full review, feel free to read it at Animehouse via the link below, but if you want some more summarized thoughts click on keep reading. Considering the popularity of the anime currently, I'm trying my best to avoid accidental spoilers or other information.
Seeing the focus shift so effortlessly from Marcille as Dungeon Lord to Laios' encounter with the beast, it helps you realize that Ryoko Kui's been going down her list of characters to traumatize and then subsequently heal.
Because of that, it's no surprise that Laios is forced to look into that fuzzy mirror shaped like a Lion and come to terms with his past and his self.
It's a wonderful climax for the series, and really is the best way to conclude Laios' character arc.
There's a lot of times where people will grossly simplify the contents and context of Delicious In Dungeon for memes and whatnot, but in truth this volume is an example of where that works best.
It's a world full of life and autonomy, filtered through Kui's lens of magic, monsters, and meals. Laios' character arc concluding, as well as the conflict resolution of this volume, are mere consequences of the world. Trying to summarize that effectively without a specific focus is impossible, but I've done my best to explain my thoughts in the full review all the same.

My grandma asked me to draw fanart of Teacher and Shiva from "The Girl from the Other Side" manga. She saw me watching the OVA movie and said "Aww what a cute little girl!" so we watched together and she loved it and wanted fanart, so here it is!
I really loved the manga and beautiful relationships between these two, but the ending honestly SUCKS DONKEY BALLS. It had the same feeling as the ending of Game of Thrones to me, it left me completely empty and I felt like I wasted time on this story for no reason. At least, the anime version had a better ending. And the animation was stunning!
Teacher and Shiva are still very dear characters to me and I still adore the relationship they had up until the last volume. I hope we get a full length anime series with them, just with a different ending lmao.
The art was made with pastels, charcoal and colored chalks on paper.

TALKING JJK CHAPTER 253
Tumblr media
At this point, I don’t know what to say.
Going into this fight, Maki showed great promise. But in the same breath, it’s that same excellence that pushed Sukuna to landing a direct Black Flash.
Well…she lasted just as long as Kashimo, but most definitely outperformed him at least.
Tumblr media
Sukuna was off the shits though lol. He started going after Maki with so much aggression and vigor that he was a lot more talkative than usual.
At first, I thought maybe he was ideologically threatened by Maki, but no. He appeared rather stoked by the opportunity to test his jujutsu on the Heavenly Restriction—a prowess that goes against the very essence of sorcery.
Although she was able to put up a great fight, albeit briefly, it left Kusakabe as the last man standing. He almost couldn’t believe it 😭
At the start of the chapter, Kusakabe is stated to be the strongest Grade 1 sorcerer. Right above Nanami, Mei Mei, and another by the name of Usami. Of course, Kusakabe rejects this and couldn’t be bothered, but I don’t think the appraisal is meaningless.
(loved gojo and nanami cameo, god I miss them)
There’s speculation that Kusakabe may very well possess a CT, but haven’t shared it out of self-preservation and not wanting to be given Special Grade duties. Honestly, he’s so real lol. He’s notorious for avoiding unfavorable encounters, but has never failed to come to someone’s aid when needed. He impressively countered a fully amped Uzumaki and survived.
I don’t expect to Kusakabe to win, but I have high hopes that he’ll show out. Which might actually work in his favor. Sukuna tends to leave openings when it comes to abilities unbeknownst to him, so this should be no different (hopefully).
Yuji is still around kinda so maybe Kusakabe won’t be alone for the entirety of the fight.
I’m thinking 254 will start or include some flashback to a conversation in the time-skip or why he became a teacher at Jujutsu Tech. Would be interesting to see that.
The shiesty sorcery tried it. Ino need to run 😂

Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai - Morino Megumi (9.5/10)
Tumblr media
Yes, this does have an English release. Yes, you should buy it. This series is pure catharsis. It's about growing up. It's about immature, possessive emotions. It's about how that kind of attitude can stunt you socially, and leave you lonely. There's also an excellent message about bullying, and forgiveness.
Hananoi and Hotaru are two very different people. Hananoi is handsome and popular. Hotaru has zero interest in dating and she's not very popular, because she's very petite and quiet. She doesn't secretly desire love. It's not on her radar.
Tumblr media
Hananoi is not a playboy. He has dated alot of women. He lavishes lots of attention on the woman he chooses, and he's very devoted. The problem is his girlfriends keep breaking up with him. He's too intense. He wants to wear couple rings. He wants to meet the parents. He doesn't want to kiss until things get serious. He wants lots of love. Pure love, not an immature teenage relationship. The issue is that...um...Hananoi is a teenager. His girlfriends are creeped out for a reason. They want to fool around and have fun. Hananoi expects his girlfriend to be available all the time. He expects her to keep her distance from her male friends. He also uses GPS to track his girlfriend.
He's...not a fun guy to date.
Tumblr media
Hotaru gives him an umbrella after a public break up. Hananoi tells her he likes her the next day. They don't start dating. Hananoi says he'll wait until she's ready, which is sweet. It takes a while for Hotaru to trust him.
Usually, girls confess to him.
This is the first time he has pursued a girl, and he's very awkward about it. He gives Hotaru space, and time, and she decides to give him a chance.
Hananoi is very popular because he's handsome. Other girls get jealous of Hotaru, so Hananoi protects her. He wants to protect her from everything.
Hotaru is creeped out by scenes like this. She starts loving Hananoi because of who he is around her. When he's around others he puts up a wall. He's icy, cold, unsociable and distant. Hotaru knows that isn't the real him, because he is so sincere to her. He also doesn't pressure her too much, and he cooks for her to express his love.
Tumblr media
Hananoi keeps getting worse though. When Hotaru gets a job at a bookstore Hananoi follows her. Literally. He starts shopping there every day to see her...until she politely tells him it's weird. Then, a boy who knows Hotaru from elementary school becomes friends with her. Then, Hananoi becomes an employee...so he can protect Hotaru.
The issue is that guy isn't an enemy.
Yao is a lovely guy. A true friend that would never go for a girl that loves somebody else. Even when he develops a crush he doesn't act on it, because Hotaru and Hananoi are in a serious relationship.
Hananoi is being paranoid for no reason.
Tumblr media
He's just plain bad at love, even though he's kind under that junk. His parents work overseas. He's a stressed, under-socialized, lonely, smart kid. That's a recipe for disaster. Hananoi tries to be honest about his past deeds, but they are so bad Hotaru says he has to stop. She's not ready to know everything about his awful past relationships. He's trying to change, for her, but his possessive habits are extreme.
Tumblr media
Hananoi improves slowly. Hotaru has a sister that doesn't approve of him, because it's unfair to expect your partner to be your everything. Hotaru needs her friends, and Hananoi does too. Hananoi tries to open up, and he makes guy friends. This immediately makes him a better, less clingy boyfriend. Hotaru is no longer his only emotional outlet, so their dates become more fun...and it's great.
Tumblr media
Here's the big problem. The big mistake. Hotaru was attacked by her best friend in grade school. It traumatized her. Non is a jealous girl who is obsessed with her appearance. She's not completely evil. She's just an unpleasant girl who cares way too much about romance. She loved Yao before. Yao had a crush on Hotaru that he didn’t act on. Non blamed Hotaru for that, and she trapped Hotaru in a classroom. Then, she hacked off Hotaru's long hair while she yelled and screamed about how everything was her fault.
That's crazy.
Non transfered schools soon after, so the incident stayed quiet.
Non returns to apologize, but it's for selfish reasons. She just wants to forget the horrible thing she did to her only real friend.
Hananoi corners her, and he threatens to hack her hair off, to teach her a lesson. He doesn’t actually do it. He just wants Non to feel the panic Hotaru went through.
Um.
Psychotic.
Hotaru temporarily breaks up with him due to this incident.
Tumblr media
Non is not a good friend. She hasn't really matured. Hotaru should not forgive her. As soon as Non finds out that Yao is Hotaru's friend...immediate sexism. It's crazy. She instantly starts babbling about how Hotaru has always been popular with boys and its not fair. Non has an average face under her makeup. I know being average can suck, but Non is extra shitty and clearly not...friendship material.
Tumblr media
Hotaru vents with Hananoi. She says she threatened to break up with him over the incident...because she's afraid. She says the right thing. She will never forgive Non for her abusive attack. She doesn't want to be friends again. Non and Hotaru cry about the past, but that's all. Then the truth comes out. If Hananoi is really willing to attack someone like that...she thinks she'll be a victim too someday.
Hananoi tells the entire truth to save his relationship.
He tells her he secretly met Non, and pretended to be friendly, because he knew what she was doing. He's met tons of toxic girls. He tried to manipulate her into leaving, because he didn't want Hotaru to meet her. He never, ever intended to cut her hair or hurt her. It was all elaborate manipulation...for his own sake. He was angry.
He didn't do it for her sake.
He did it because he was there that day.
Tumblr media
That's right! Hananoi was her gloomy classmate back in elementary school. He loved her back then too. He wanted to be her friend, but when he ran to her he heard screaming. He hid in a corner, and listened to Non rant while she chopped off Hotaru's hair. It traumatized him too, in a different way. It's where his obsession with protection comes from. He felt weak. Useless. He didn't help her. Then, he stopped trying to be her friend and she forgot him.
When she gave him that umbrella he decided to take a chance. He stopped waiting for love to come with him. He chased after her and decided to change. He decided to do whatever it takes to be a good boyfriend and husband material. He messes up along the way, but Hotaru admits that she's not pure too. She hates Non. Fear is in there too, but despite her sweetness she can't forgive blatant abuse. She's glad that Non has to live with regret for what she did, and the true friendship she lost.
Hananoi becomes her boyfriend again, and they become a fairly normal couple. Hananoi will always be possessive. Hotaru was his first love, and he's obsessed with soul mates, but he learns how to express himself. He makes friends so he doesn't crush Hotaru and their relationship, and they get a happy ending.

To Strip The Flesh is such a visceral, impactful short story collection that makes me eager to watch this mangaka & what new stories they produce. The first story about a trans guy and his ailing father is a particular favourite of mine as it doesn't shy away from showing the realities of Japanese trans person trying to be accepted by their family and within themselves but is also tinged with the sort of hopeful message I know will be meaningful to many going through similar struggles.
The author's words in the interview with Motigi, a gay writer, at the end of the book made me think deeply about childhood trauma, particularly for queer people, and how good intentions can cause the most pain.
Tumblr media
Oto Toda' art is raw and mesmerizing, and there's a particular scene in the first story that really hit me with "this person gets it" and while I won't spoil it any more than that I will say it was inspired by the author's own experiences (as mentioned in the interview at the end but posting that would spoil it!).
Please, if you can, go pick up To Strip The Flesh by Oto Toda-you won't regret it!

Magical girl ramblings of the day: GUSHING OVER MAGICAL GIRLS
I think it’s the best time to bring this manga series up considering it’s getting an anime adaption next year.
First and foremost I’d like to clarify that I don think anyone should watch this anime when it comes out, or even slightly support it.
Now onto what the manga is about; it’s about a girl who’s super into the Tres Magia, a trio of pastel magical girls who fight the forces of evil. She gets confronted by a creature who asks if she’d like to be like them too, which she eagerly agrees before transforming into a bdsm based outfit, and being declared on the enemy side.
I went into this manga knowing purely it had Yuri, and I thought that was interesting and the designs and magic system seemed cute before I was jumpscared with bdsm. To be frank, nsfw mangas are okay but not when they involve children. It gets worse when they get a 8 year old on the enemy team, and they proclaim her as dirtier than the rest of them, with her powers also being bdsm based.
That’s when I dropped the manga. I tried pursuing through it so I could atleast write a good review on it, but I couldn’t continue once the 8 year old was brought into the picture. I’m disgusted that this manga is getting an anime adaption but then again, Miss Kobayashis Dragon Maid got one too. It’s sad that we keep getting anime adaptations of blatant ch***p**n.
I only wanted to make this post because I don’t think a lot of people understand just how horrific this anime will be, if based on the manga. It’s not cute, it’s not good Yuri. If you want something cute with good Yuri in the magical girl franchise, I beg you to seek other media. Such as Madoka Magica, Magical Girl Raising Project, Sailor Moon, and so much more.

Manga rec time:
She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat, by Yuzaki Sakaomi
Tumblr media
Alternate title: Useless Lesbian Cooks Too Much.
Original title: Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna / 作りたい女と食べたい女
Genres: Slice of Life, Romance, Girls Love
Themes: Food, Daily Life
Japanese volumes: 2 (Ongoing)
Cooking is how Nomoto de-stresses, but one day, she finds herself making way more than she can eat by herself. And so, she invites her neighbor Kasuga, who also lives alone. What will come out of this impromptu dinner invitation...?
This is a very sweet and funny story where we see Nomoto and Kasuga getting closer with each meal, leading to an eventual romance (there's only 2 books out so it's not quite there yet, but it's getting to it).
I love how Yuzaki-sensei explores womanhood in this too, with Nomoto's male coworker telling her she'd make a good girlfriend, a chapter where Nomoto is on her period, general expectations towards women, or men's reaction to Kasuga's eating habits.
Speaking of Kasuga, I'm so glad to see a main character who doesn't have a skinny waist and noodle limbs. She eats a lot and it shows but it's never depicted as a negative thing and Nomoto never even thinks about her weight. She only thinks about Kasuga's physique once when she wonders where she does her shopping since she's so tall. That's it.
Also! There's a live action adaptation coming out on November 29th, I'm definitely watching it!
Tumblr media
French version under the cut
Titre original : Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna / 作りたい女と食べたい女
Genres : Slice of Life, Romance, Girls Love
Thèmes : Gastronomie, Quotidien
Volumes VO : 2 (En Cours)

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Anime / Fantasy Adventure
Rating: 10/10
Tumblr media
I wanted to make a post going over the manga and anime for <Frieren>. In short, <Frieren: Beyond Journey's End> is a the story of an elf mage after her party of heroes defeat the Demon King. Essentially, after the heroes achieve their end goal, where do they go?
First off...
Beautiful art. Both the anime and manga have great art. Half of the story, imo, is appreciating the peace after the defeat of the Demon King. Of course there are still monsters, but I love the appreciation for nature.
Character development and depth. Right from the beginning, we can see the development and depth the characters have. Cardboard characters don't exist in Frieren.
Heart-warming message of living life to the fullest. The story often has flashbacks, which is how the anime and manga connect the current story with the story of the original heroes. The moments on how long-life affects the elf mage, Frieren, and how she grows from it is very sweet.
For the cons...
I personally think the manga is better paced than the anime. Not for any particular reason, but for the anime, I lowkey feel like each episode kind of cuts the story off and breaks the flow. I read the manga first so maybe that's why it feels like this, and I think it just flows much better. Each story and each moment connects to the next. Makes me wonder what the anime could've done better to connect moments more.
Up to taste. I love this kind of anime, so I ate it all up! But I have a few friends who are not really into this kind of genre and thought the series was boring. It has a slow start-up. You need to warm up to the series a little and trust that it'll deliver, but also don't over estimate it. It's a weird balance. I understand it but I also don't understand it because I'm a huge fan. I like it too much to see it as boring lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall,
<Frieren: Beyond Journey's End> is an insanely good anime and manga, imo. It is very up to your personal taste, but this series is my bread and butter. I love how it's not a normal shonen story. Usually Demon King or big monster stories are about the characters on their long journey to defeat it. At the end, Demon King defeated, end goal achieved, series done. But I'm always so intrigued by "I wonder what they do afterwards and where they go". And this series answered those questions. You see the aftermath of the town and the people. They do move through plot locations quickly, but I think the plot has a good pace.
The manga is ahead of the anime (of course), so if you liked the anime, I highly recommend the manga. The manga is completely worth your time.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 137: Chu Chu Lovely Muni Muni Mura Mura
Tumblr media
Oh what, you thought we were going to be thought provoking and actually dive into Denji's struggle as a character through a normal lens? Ha-ha, you fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is “Never get involved in a land war in Asia,” but only slightly less well known is this: "Never expect Fujimoto to be normal".
The whole chapter is expectation subversion, which perfectly captures both Fujimoto's sense of humor, and his absolute desire for b-list and camp. I mean, just look at how we open, Denji giving a surprisingly long winded (for him) monologue about maturing past the point of taking whatever kind of affection he can.... before it's revealed that it's all in his head and he's sucking on a dead devil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In all honesty though, this is rather unironically an important moment for Denji. Why? Because he knows better. He himself understands the situation that he's in, that he should be better than what he's doing, that he shouldn't be caving to the whims and mockery of a girl offering an empty promise. But he can't stop himself. He's so far below rock bottom in this moment that it doesn't matter if it's a lie, it doesn't matter if she's hazing him. What matters is that she's giving him attention, and a chance to delude himself from his current station in life.
Anyways, the pair go to a karaoke place and the girl gets going on a song, leading to probably one of Fujimoto's best action sequences in all of part 2 now.
And no, it's not the action itself that makes this an incredible moment, it's quite literally everything else. Denji fell for the trap, he took it hook, line, and sinker and is now stuck fighting off a small army of men with baseball bats while the girl sings an absolute rager in the background. The entire setup is just incredible, the sheer thrill that both viewers and Denji alike feel from the moment is impeccable, and it ends the chapter on just the right note.
Tumblr media
I mean, look at this, the pile of bodies littering the hallway, the three panel shot of Denji's face, the matchup to end the chapter. Absolutely masterclass Fujimoto work on display.
I'd really like to take a closer look at Denji's reaction (and all the guys with bats too). These three panels give sort of a double meaning to Denji's character, in my opinion. The first, is self-deprecating humor at the fact that he ever thought he might stand a fraction of a snowball's chance in hell for the trap to not be a trap. And the second, well the second is Denji finding that Chainsaw Man spark again. Pure unadulterated violence, the feeling of superiority, of a challenge or uphill fight laid against him. Denji's in his element now, and that's dangerous for our girl here.
Anyways, the guys with bats. Very funny idea considering the girl "gets around", so seeing a lineup of guys appear with bats while Denji and this girl are on a "date" is a pretty good type of humor.
Tumblr media
Overall, for how insane this chapter is, it's exactly what Denji needed. He needed to be beat down, he needed to feel that desperation, he needed to remember who he is. That even if he goes to school now, even if he has a little sister and a house and food and all sorts of stuff, that the part of him that became Chainsaw Man is still a part of Denji. That they're two sides of the same coin. That he's still strong and capable and dangerous, and that he can keep chasing all the dreams he could ever want.

My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness by Kabi Nagata
As you might know I am really into graphic novels, but I don't really read any manga. I have never really been drawn to the art style, so it's not a type of read I usually even look for. I had heard a lot about this book when it was first translated into Italian, and when I randomly found it in a bookstore I had to get it. I am actively trying to get more queer books onto my shelves, and this was an amazing addition. I ended up reading it in one sitting, and it got me very emotional multiple times. The focus point of this manga is the personal experience of the author who got to 28 years old without having any kind of relationships, and for this reason she decides to have her first time with a sex worker. In actual fact the book is about much much more. The author presents herself in total honesty and shows so much vulnerability addressing her problems with depression, anxiety and eating disorders. She is very open about how these things affected her, as well as her repression of the idea of sex in general, not only due to her queerness. The latter point as well as the depression and loneliness talk is what really got me. I had to hold back tears so often I am almost embarassed to say. You can tell how open heartedly the author was writing her story, she is incredibly honest about her thoughts and her fears, she just lays it all in front of you. I appreciated that a lot. I think this manga can be a great addition to your shelves, I will reread it for certain, and I will be looking for the other book the author published on the topic of her queerness. This book also confirms that even though I am normally not a big memoir reader if it's in manga/graphic novel form I will love it. I don't know what it's about graphic versions of memoirs and biographies but I adore them.
I read this book for the own voices prompt of the jumbo reading challenge.

Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 257 REVIEW
The black sparks are continuous !!
The series-long theory surrounding Yuji and Sukuna has officially been confirmed. The two are, in fact related, but in a complicated, yet twisted way.
We finally get some context on the origins of Yuji Itadori.
The chapter opens with Uraume asking Sukuna, “Who is Itadori Yuji?”
He says that Yuji is Kenjaku’s creation. Due to his affairs with his reincarnated twin, Jin Itadori (as Kaori Itadori), Yuji came to be. Sukuna was born a twin and while in the womb consumed the other. However, the soul wandered a bit before it reached Kenjaku.
This was crucial reveal that opens up so many angles regarding Sukuna’s existence.
Now knowing the implications of their connection, Uraume wonders if Yuji possess latent potential similar to Sukuna.
Yuji vs Sukuna
Tumblr media
Yuji Has Two Curse Techniques!!
Blood Manipulation and “Shrine,” granted from being the reincarnated body of Ryomen Sukuna.
Yuji’s version of Sukuna’s signature ability appears to come in the form of scissors followed by dotted lines. This is just so fitting for a character like Yuji.
I’m wondering if the lines are meant to illustrate a level of refinement in the technique. This also opens the chance if it means it’s “better” in terms of its application. Obviously, Sukuna’s expertise in “Shrine” will leagues ahead of Yuji’s, but I wonder if that is the case here.

I Worked Myself to Death and Reincarnated as the Queen of His Majesty, Who is Younger than Me! - By Ononata Manimani (8/10)
Tumblr media
I've had this on the back burner for a while. Yandere confirmed! This is a reincarnation story with some cuteness, some creepiness, ghosts and good art. It's a wacky story with alot of unexpected elements, like the ghost thing, which is a main plot point.
Emi is a painfully average office worker. She woke up sick then she went to work. She got sicker. She hasn't had a lover in 3 years, and she's not close to her family.
Tumblr media
Her death is kind of brutal. She gets a sharp pain in her head after days without getting treated. She works for a "black company" that will fire her if she dares to go to the doctor. She dies with nothing but regret, and when she awakens she sees a handsome man.
Tumblr media
It's her husband, King Theodore. Emi has been reincarnated into the body of Princess Emilia, Theodore's first wife. Emi crawls out of her coffin. Theodore picks her up, and he decides to use her. In this world reincarnated people are a sign of disaster. Emi will be burned to death by a mob if the truth comes out. She has to be a good wife or else...
Tumblr media
Wait...Emilia is still alive...kinda. Emi got the body, but the spirit of Emilia is floating around her. Ok, so what does this mean? Emilia's spirit is a side effect. It's what happens when a foreign spirit like Emi steals a body. Emilia could turn into an evil spirit, and bring forth calamity. Theodore wants to destroy her, but Emi befriends her instead.
Theodore isn't a very romantic guy. He's a practical, workaholic king. His reincarnated wife is interesting, so he lets her live...for now.
Tumblr media
Theodore softens up pretty fast, but he still isn't very romantic until like chapter 4. I wasn't sure if he was a yandere for a while. He's very childish around Emi. Emi is willing to be a good Queen in order to live a comfortable life, but that doesn't mean love is on the table. Emilia and Theodore were in a loveless marriage. Emi does not pursue Theodore. He eventually comes after her.
Tumblr media
Sidenote. Theodore is the strongest magician. He has a ton of scary powers, but he's overworked. He will die if he doesn't learn how to let his guard down. Emi is pretty nice, and she can also see that Theodore is an effective King. She doesn't want him to die, and she doesn't want Emilia to become an evil spirit.
Emilia becomes her best friend by the way. It's kinda weird, but cute...Emilia is a brat though. I roll my eyes when she rants about men and romance.
Tumblr media
There's a lot of culture shock in this. King Theodore rules over a polygamous kingdom. Emilia didn't have to be by his side. She actually wanted him to bring in another princess. Emi is more traditional. She never wants to fall for Theodore, because she doesn't want to share the one she loves.
(She is willing to be one of the queens and enjoy a wealthy life though lol...)
Tumblr media
Theodore proposes once more after he promises to be faithful.
Tumblr media
After the proposal Theodore becomes very jealous. He hates Emilia. He wants Emi to care about him. No one else. He even gets jealous when she compliments the servants.

It's easy to see why Theodore is a yandere. Emi is his friend. Possibly the first friend he has ever had fun with. He is a work machine, but Emi is able to break down his barriers. She knows how bad overworking is, and her earnest attempts to help him are pretty cute. Theodore also isn't an overly toxic yandere... mostly...they are married...and he kind of has a point...
Emi makes up a ton of excuses, but Theodore thinks a loving royal marriage will bring happiness and prosperity to the whole country.
...he's absolutely right. Emilia was a total brat content to hide in her personal castle. Emi is a dutiful queen. A love match with her husband can only be a good thing...but sigh...ugh...Emi is insecure because her previous life sucked etc.
This is pretty complex for a reincarnation story, and the yandere isn't a boring cookie-cutter villain.

I Read The First Volume Of The Case Study of Vanitas And Here's A Review Of It
You know when an anime adaptation is great that they basically animate the first three episodes from the first volume without any major changes. Yes, the anime was great, one of my absolute favorites, but the manga is a whole other magical experience. To be honest, my review for the first volume will be short because there’s not much to talk about since it’s identical to the first three and a half episodes. All my theories will probably in a later volume that doesn’t follow the anime.

To give a run down of the story, it’s about Noe, a vampire, traveling to Paris as he heard word of a mysterious grimoire called the Book of Vanitas being sighted there. When a vampire woman goes on a rampage due to a curse, a young human man calling himself Vanitas steps up and vows to treat her for he is a vampire doctor who possesses the Book of Vanitas and is the only one who can activate it. When his abilities are shown to Noe for the first time, Noe and Vanitas goes on many misadventures to cure vampires from their curses.
Mochizuki’s art is beautiful. I especially loved the airship scene and the scene where Noe and Vanitas were falling off and looking at the moon. She really amped up with the designs compared to Pandora Hearts. I love Pandora Hearts, but The Case Study of Vanitas’s character designs really stand out. Vanitas and Noe are my favorites! However, what Mochizuki has improved the most is the comedic faces. Boy, the funny faces she draws for the characters are HILARIOUS.
I guess the only difference from this volume and the first three episodes is noticeable in episode 1. In the first episode, the story of Vanitas of the Blue Moon was introduced in the beginning, while it was introduced in the middle of the chapter in the manga. That’s the only major difference I noticed. Other than that, the anime did a great job with the pacing and making Mochizuki’s art be even more beautiful in animated form. If you’re curious about the anime, I have my reviews of the anime on my blog—you can click here to read the first two episode reviews as the third episode does have Volume 2 content in it.
My favorite character is and will always be Vanitas as he’s an annoying gremlin with something to hide and I like that aspect of him! He’s a very unique protagonist who isn’t afraid of being a jerk. Though, since this story is told through Noe’s eyes, the jerk aspect could be amped up out of bias.
All I wonder is how long the story will be because it is a recollection of Noe’s memories of Vanitas as he did kill him some time after the first episode. The mystery behind Vanitas’s demise is probably the biggest one of the story. Since Mochizuki is the queen of plot twists, I am expecting a very shocking reveal.
Also, the cutest thing about the first volume is that Hiromu Arakawa, the author of Fullmetal Alchemist, wrote a little comment for Mochizuki that can be seen behind the cover when you open the book! Arakawa is one of Mochizuki’s influences, so I’m sure she was thrilled!
Because I am a biased Mochizuki fangirl, this is a 5-star read like the four Pandora Hearts volumes I reviewed. Do I recommend this? Absolutely. My one goal in life is to collect everything Mochizuki has written and make a bookshelf section dedicated to her works. Also, bookstores, why do you never have volume 2 in stock! Wherever I go, Volume 2 is never in stock! What is your thought on the Vanitas manga?
