I'm late to the aro positivity party but thought I could shout out a manga I read this year, I Want to be a Wall!
It's about an aroace woman (who is really into BL) and a gay man being arranged into a marriage and how they navigate that, growing closer and kind of becoming a QPR.
The stuff that really got to me was the discussion of the woman's experience with her asexuality (and aromanticism though that isn't explicitly labeled), how it connects to her media tastes and the way people have hurt her in the past. It was all absolutely heartbreaking.
A fun detail I also like is how the pair act out romantic tropes (Gift of Magi style misunderstanding, paranoia about "cheating,"), but they are all done through a platonic context.
(Ex. Even though they're not in romantic love, he still feels upset at the idea of losing their bond, or her getting hurt by someone he doesn't know.)
There's not too many chapters of it out, unfortunately (only like two volumes), but the ones I read are very enjoyable and I'd love to put this on other people's radar!
(btw, I got this manga rec from this video, and there's more in it!)

(Please do not be wildly freaked out by the volume 1 cover art, I PROMISE.)
This manga is so freaking good yall. I started it ages ago, but only recently got around to reading the last 2 volumes. (There's only 5 total.)
It's so good. It's so cute. The found family queer community wholesome vibes are so strong. I love the way the manga gives space for so many different queer experiences to be explored and seen with respect and kindness.
Like, I'm not kidding. I'd rank this up there in terms of A+ queer manga.

To Strip The Flesh is such a visceral, impactful short story collection that makes me eager to watch this mangaka & what new stories they produce. The first story about a trans guy and his ailing father is a particular favourite of mine as it doesn't shy away from showing the realities of Japanese trans person trying to be accepted by their family and within themselves but is also tinged with the sort of hopeful message I know will be meaningful to many going through similar struggles.
The author's words in the interview with Motigi, a gay writer, at the end of the book made me think deeply about childhood trauma, particularly for queer people, and how good intentions can cause the most pain.
Oto Toda' art is raw and mesmerizing, and there's a particular scene in the first story that really hit me with "this person gets it" and while I won't spoil it any more than that I will say it was inspired by the author's own experiences (as mentioned in the interview at the end but posting that would spoil it!).
Please, if you can, go pick up To Strip The Flesh by Oto Toda-you won't regret it!

Manga rec time:
She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat, by Yuzaki Sakaomi
Alternate title: Useless Lesbian Cooks Too Much.
Original title: Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna / 作りたい女と食べたい女
Genres: Slice of Life, Romance, Girls Love
Themes: Food, Daily Life
Japanese volumes: 2 (Ongoing)
Cooking is how Nomoto de-stresses, but one day, she finds herself making way more than she can eat by herself. And so, she invites her neighbor Kasuga, who also lives alone. What will come out of this impromptu dinner invitation...?
This is a very sweet and funny story where we see Nomoto and Kasuga getting closer with each meal, leading to an eventual romance (there's only 2 books out so it's not quite there yet, but it's getting to it).
I love how Yuzaki-sensei explores womanhood in this too, with Nomoto's male coworker telling her she'd make a good girlfriend, a chapter where Nomoto is on her period, general expectations towards women, or men's reaction to Kasuga's eating habits.
Speaking of Kasuga, I'm so glad to see a main character who doesn't have a skinny waist and noodle limbs. She eats a lot and it shows but it's never depicted as a negative thing and Nomoto never even thinks about her weight. She only thinks about Kasuga's physique once when she wonders where she does her shopping since she's so tall. That's it.
Also! There's a live action adaptation coming out on November 29th, I'm definitely watching it!
French version under the cut
Titre original : Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna / 作りたい女と食べたい女
Genres : Slice of Life, Romance, Girls Love
Thèmes : Gastronomie, Quotidien
Volumes VO : 2 (En Cours)

Got the last volume!
Ok so I just go the last volume and.
THEY ACTUALYY CONFIRMED IT!!?!.
I guess it was pretty obvious, but given how manga usually is, I was sure I would have to just leave it as a headcannon ><
Im honestly pretty glad they explicitly showed this because i feel the approach this manga takes a lot of the time with just showing Tomoko’s perspective and leaving what exactly the boys are feeling and going through somewhat ambiguous doesn’t feel as great when its applied to an orientation so often erased and ignored like asexuality.

This was so cute! I loved that Hirano was completely oblivious about Kagiuras feelings, but also somehow kind of has a little crush on him? It was so funny and had me giggling. I also really appreciate Hanzawa seeing right through both of them and just cringing about what dumb dumbs these two were being. I really liked this one and I can’t wait to see what kind of shenanigans Hirano and Kagiura get into in this series. Volume one is getting four out of five stars from me! 😊
