In this poem, Mary Oliver shares her reliance on the natural world. She does not see this reliance as a weakness, somehow a diminishment of her self-sufficiency. Instead, her presence in nature, among the trees, is presented as a mutual giving, a kind of relationship. Any serenity she may feel comes as a result of the sheer generosity of these surroundings.

I wonder how often each of us has been saved by the serenity of the natural world. For Mary Oliver, among the trees, she is saved “daily”. There are times for us, too, when we falter along the way, when that same earth from which we were born comes to console us and give us new strength. Perhaps, the trees or the sea cannot solve our problems, our frustrations, but they can give us a renewed hope and encouragement, sometimes just enough to make it through to the other side of whatever it is that we are facing.
