wrestling is so weird. like. these aren’t real people. but they ARE real people. but they’re not. sometimes they use their real names, sometimes they act like themselves, but they’re still CHARACTERS, despite using the same name and acting like themselves and generally just being a person. but then you have people that act like they’re demons or gods or aliens and like. they’re considered just as normal and average and they’re just tossed into a ring with ppl that are Just Dudes, and sometimes the Just Dudes WIN!!!

sometimes it’s so hard to be like “hey this is a character, this isn’t a real person” when you see like. dante martin or jon moxley or toni storm or jamie hayter or somebody that’s just a Person. but then they go up against malakai black or danhausen or abadon or alien gimmick kris statlander and it’s like oh yeah, that’s right, this is all very much a story telling experience that’s being acted out for my entertainment and i LOVE that. i can’t get that kind of experience anywhere else. thats such a pro wrestling specific emotion to feel and i love it so much. kayfabe is so fun.

He takes her on the best dates and outings, showing how she should be treated. She was his now. He had to look after her! He's dotting and gentle with her at every step. He's such a gentleman! How Finding the Right Writing Community Can Support You as a Writer

I’ve been a storyteller since I first learned to speak and a writer since I first held a pen. The writing journey is an emotional roller coaster, and no single day is ever the same. 

There are moments of delight, like when a scene I’ve struggled with finally comes together, or the satisfaction of building a character who comes to life on the page. There’s the sense of accomplishment when my first draft is finished and I get to read my completed story, and the nerves of putting those same words in front of readers for the very first time.

There are lots of silent rooms, the soft tapping of keys, or the scribble of a pen. Sometimes the isolation gets too much, and that’s when I grapple with writer’s block, wrestle with stubborn plot holes, or have to slog through edits I’m just not in the mood for.

In my years as a working writer, the most important thing I’ve learned is that while only I can do the writing, I don’t have to go on the journey alone. A writing community can make all the difference in keeping me motivated. 

What is a writing community?

Writing communities are as diverse as the writers who are part of them. Every writer will have a different need from their community, but what they do share is giving writers the opportunity to interact, share knowledge, and provide mutual support.

Some communities come ready-made. NaNoWriMo is a prime example, where diverse writers all rally together to achieve a common goal and support each other along the way. It has been one of my biggest encouragements over the years. And at Novlr, we’ve built an entire writing workspace around the idea of community, not only offering a virtual space for writers to come together and share their wins, struggles, ideas, and techniques but also giving our writer-owners a real say and influence in how our platform grows and develops.

Why are writing communities important?

Writing communities are a lifeline for many of us, offering a nurturing environment where we can learn, grow, and find kinship. Whether it's seeking feedback, gaining inspiration, or just breaking the isolation often associated with writing, they play an invaluable role in any writer's journey.

Encouragement

Sometimes, as a writer, all you need is someone telling you you’re doing a good job. Positive affirmations and encouragement can make all the difference, not only to your confidence but also to motivate you to stick with it. Being able to share ideas, troubleshoot plot holes, and celebrate even the small victories with people who get it is the perfect motivation.

Accountability

Being part of a writing community that openly shares its goals and commitments is a surefire way to motivate you to follow through. Again, NaNoWriMo is a perfect example of this; announcing your intention to the world and to the wider NaNo community makes your 50,000-word draft more than just an idea you have. It makes it real.

This accountability works for smaller goals too. Just sharing them with people makes them a tangible thing to work toward, keeping you accountable and on track to achieve your writing goals.

What types of writing communities are there?

Writing events

Writing events foster writing communities where each member shares a single goal or focus. NaNoWriMo is, of course, the biggest and most well-known goal-focused event in the creative writing space. I have lifelong writing pals I’ve met over NaNoWriMo, and we still regularly get together for critiques. Last year, I even did a 24-hour novel challenge where we took the NaNo goal of 50,000 words but tried to fit it into a single 24-hour period. It was one of the toughest writing challenges I’ve ever done, but the community that came from it is amazing.

Similarly, online communities, like our Discord, that host regular writing sprints, often attract goal-focused individuals who enjoy the thrill of time-bound writing challenges. 

In-person writing groups

In-person writing groups meet at a dedicated time and place, like a local coffee shop, library, or someone's home. I host a writing group at my local pub on one of their quieter afternoons, and there’s a handful of us who get together, exchange ideas, play writing games, provide real-time feedback, and just generally share our work in the spirit of improving our craft. 

The value of personal contact can't be underestimated, as it does allow for more nuanced discussions about works in progress and provides a structure that many writers, myself included, find beneficial.

Critique groups

Critique groups, as the name suggests, focus primarily on providing constructive feedback on members' work. These groups are all about sharing drafts and receiving detailed criticism about your writing — anything from accuracy to style and accessibility.

Peer critiques can offer a variety of perspectives on your writing. It’s a great way to find plot holes, character inconsistencies, or stylistic improvements that you might have overlooked early on. Furthermore, by critiquing others' work, you learn to sharpen your own editing skills and gain fresh insights into the writing process.

Writing retreats

Writing retreats are designed to provide writers with a break from their everyday environment and immerse them in a space dedicated to their writing. These retreats can range from weekend getaways to month-long residencies and are often situated in inspiring locations, from country houses to beachfront cabins.

The tranquil and focused atmosphere of a retreat is designed to spark creativity and reduce distractions, allowing writers to concentrate solely on their craft.

Online writing communities

Not everyone lives near other writers or is comfortable seeking out strangers in person. Online writing communities offer a digital space for writers to interact and learn from each other, extending the possibility of collaboration regardless of geographical location.

Platforms like Reddit, Discord, and the NaNoWriMo forums are popular for hosting vibrant writing communities, providing a dynamically interactive space that keeps writers connected, inspired, and motivated in their writing journey, even if they can’t be with other writers in person.

Social media

Social media channels offer various ways for writers to connect, exchange ideas, and foster communities. On Twitter and Tumblr, writers can follow trending hashtags like #writingcommunity, #amwriting, #writeblr, #writingtips, or #NaNoWriMo to engage in conversations, share inspiration, or get advice. TikTok has also recently emerged as another hub for writers, with the #BookTok and #WritingTok trends really taking off. 

To sum up

Writing communities come in many forms and serve different purposes, but each offers unique benefits to support and enrich your writing journey. They provide the encouragement, accountability, feedback, and camaraderie needed to navigate the often solitary path of writing. It may be your journey, but you don’t have to take it alone.

What was Napoleon Usher's fatal flaw? the Guilt and Gifts of the Wealthy

I've been sitting on this, but I've seen a few posts associating the Usher children to the seven deadly sins and I've seen him labeled as gluttonous or slothful, and while I see the reasoning I don't think either alone lines up.

So what was Napoleon "Leo" Usher representing?

Let's begin with his role in the Usher family. He was one of the "bastard children," a classic middle child mostly just minding his own. He doesn't have any extreme ambitions and doesn't really bother with the dynamics and drama beyond being there. He runs a video game design company, and seems to do so pretty well (or at least not notably badly or corruptly). In fact, in the first few episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher he's one of the most if not the most endearing and empathetic of the Ushers through his support and guidance of Prospero as Prospero tries to establish a position of his family. He is arguably also the most visibly upset by Prospero and Camille's deaths.

Now, he's obviously not all good. In the classic horror establishing of ones wrongs sequence, we see that he is hiding an affair from his boyfriend, Julius. A woman sleeps with him due to his fame, and he shoves her out on the balcony to keep her from view of Julius. He partakes in several types of drugs, and happily shares them with Prospero, Julius, and Camile. Still, infidelity and drug usage are certainly not great, but are they worth the vicious torment he undergoes? Are they worth the wrath of Verna, who we know only violently kills if she feels one deserves it due to their actions? Plenty of non-wealthy people have affairs and plenty of non-wealthy people use drugs.

Then, we see him violently kill his boyfriend's cat. Well, we don't see it actually. Instead, he wakes up from a drug trip and realizes the cat is stabbed to death in Julius's apartment, assumed to be by Leo's hands. This is striking; why not show Leo in a violent frenzy? Well, the violence is secondary. Instead, the show focuses on Leo frantically cleaning up the cat's body and the gory scene around it.

Leo quickly goes to a pet shelter, where he meets Verna. He wants to replace the cat with an identical cat. Immediately we're shown a darker version of Leo, we realize that he does not care about the cat and does not even seem to think that Julius would not be able to recognize a new cat from his old one. Moreover, he's covering up his crime further. He's hiding the violence. Then, he finds the identical cat. Verna insists the cat is reserved and cannot be purchased/adopted. But Leo insists, aggressively, offering to buy the cat at higher price and, when that doesn't work, by the whole shelter.

In this moment, he dooms himself to a brutal death, and solidifies himself as the flaw of hiding the problem with money. He is the most "normal, well-adjusted" Usher, but when push comes to shove and he fucks up instead of facing them like a real person he can make problems disappear with money.

But I want to go further.

I want to talk about the cat in the walls.

Because although Leo makes his problem disappear with money, he's not the only one to do so. Camille uses her money and influence much more explicitly to spin the media in favor of the Ushers and hide the truth of the Usher's and Fortunado's wrongdoings. So why is he the one cursed into Poe's the Cat in the Walls?

Now, I have not read much Poe, but I know the Cat in the Wall tells the story of a man who kills his cat (also named Pluto like Julius's) when it bites him and is then haunted by an identical cat. The story is often considered a representation of guilt, and how it eats one up even if the evidence of the guilt's cause is hidden. The man in the original story kills his wife as well, and it ends with him hiding the wife in the wall. And in this we see why The Cat in the Wall is Leo's story: Leo's downfall is one of the guilt of the gifts of wealth.

Prior to Leo's death, he is tormented by the cat, who randomly attacks him and gives him "gifts" of dead animals. It is here we see the warped generosity of wealth, how it gives but in awful, gruesome ways. The fake Pluto gives him these animal corpses that Leo has to repeatedly clean up, echoing his initial cleanup of the original Pluto's corpse. More than that, the corpses resemble the mangled bodies of his own siblings: Camille and Prospero. Therefore, the gifted corpses can be said to represent Leo's own grief towards his siblings, whose deaths were both awfully violent and quickly swept under the rug. He's finally seeing the horror of wealth as a solution.

Re-framing Leo's initial wrongdoings under this lens, we see that the issue of infidelity is not the infidelity itself, but the wealth and fame that Leo clings to through his infidelity (i.e. sleeping with his "fans"). The issue of his drug use is not the drugs, but the fact that he uses expensive, designer drugs to repress his own emotions and reality instead of facing them.

As his grief and paranoia escalates, he becomes more and more physically harmed by the cat. These cat scratches are key not for the harm but for the infection. Leo's guilt is infecting him slowly, one cut at a time. One hidden mistake, one disappeared issue at a time. Camille was right that "Ushers don't make things" but Ushers also don't fix things. They just throw money at something until the problem disappears. Even if, as Leo realizes, that problem is one of their own.

This is perhaps best represented with Leo's final moments, when he grabs a hammer and begins destroying the walls of his home, shouting, "I can buy a new wall! I can buy a new loft! I can even get Hemsworth to send me a new hammer!" This is why Leo falls: because even though his distress and issues are a direct cause of his wealth, he's still trying to solve it with wealth. He's still viewing the wealth as a shield even when it's a knife. It is similar to how the photo of Verna changes: he sees a solution (a cat identical to Pluto) when the reality is a rat (resembling one of fake Pluto's corpse gifts).

Napoleon Usher was perhaps the most well-adjusted Usher, but that is his downfall. He wants to solve his problems and help his loved ones, but the shortcut money provides is too alluring. His residual humanity (his care for his siblings and Julius) cries out in him as he tries to cover it up with cash. The sound in the walls was not the cat, but his own conscience.

Quirks and MHA society

Throughout the manga there is this reoccurring theme of people not being able to use and control their quirks and the quirk system being broken but honestly this plot point never really goes anywhere in my opinion or if it is used it's not used properly and never reaches it's fullest potential.

Like we see people break the law a bunch of times by using their quirks illegally and we see people state that they cannot control their quirks but nothing is done about it. We never see people arrested for quirk use unless said quirk use harms people.

If it's illegal to use your quirk then how is it that you have middle schoolers freely using their quirks in school or how normal members of the public use their quirks? Also what does this mean for people born with a heteromorphic quirk? Is part of the reason they're discriminated because they can't turn if their quirks or is it because so heteromorphic quirks make the user look more alien and less human? The government in MHA doesn't seem to be very strict about quirk use laws but states that it is (hori failing in show don't tell again🤷‍♀️)

What about people whose quirks are dangerous if they don't release it? What do they do? Do they just have to suffer or does the MHA government have a facility where people can safely release their quirk? This doesn't seem likely considering that izuku, ochako, Katsuki and miriko ran into someone who they(miriko and bakugo)deemed a villain for not being able to control his quirk. This case is treated as a one off incident but it really isn't. If one person has a quirk like that then that means so many other civilians do and they could of been pushed into villainy due to it. Hori establishes that the MHA universe lacks establishments that help people discharge/release or deal with their quirk but he never outright does anything with this plot point (it's mainly used to justify characters actions or villainy)

Horikoshi also introduces the half baked idea that quirks can influence ones personality and desires. This idea is introduced mainly in the MVA arc to ig justify characters (like toga and tomuras) actions and behaviours. I think it could of been a good idea if characters end up acting similarly or develop similar traits that come from their quirk however as I mentioned before the idea is half baked. Toga having an interest/craving in blood because thats how her quirk works makes sense but it's not heavily established. When it comes to toga we get mentions of how broken the quirk counselling system is and how instead of helping her to deal with a quirk that makes her have such a strong fascination and affection to blood it only made her suppress the urges until she went off the rails into full insanity. When it comes to tomura this idea is only used as an excuse (almost) for his actions, his quirk is used to demonise him and make him more of this completely psycho villain who loves to destroy things because that's his nature?!? When it really isn't.

Quirk counselling is a plot point with so much wasted potential. Like how did quirk counselling work? Was it a legal requirement or was it recommended? Did it actually help some people by helping kids understand their quirks, help them with control, offer any support equipment if needed to deal with the quirk and teach children morals? It seems like people with ordinary common quirks benefit more from the system then people with unique quirks that have unique side effects. We are told that toga's quirk counselling was full of adults not understanding and telling her that she is a weird psycho who is obsessed with blood instead of actually helping her. We see curious herself admit that there are many problems with the quirk counselling system and how it only benefited people with certain types of quirks and how it was basically a place teaching and breeding children to learn "right" and "wrong".

We see the quirk counselling system fail but it's never addressed. MHA chapter 22 shows how people with powerful or uncontrollable quirks tend to be failed by the system just like how toga and tomuras were. Eri is a special case you can't even know if she is just being trained or if she attends general counselling because in all truth we aren't told. Eri also faces the same problem where she can't have too much build up for her quirk or it will hurt her so shouldn't MHA dive deeper into the idea of quirk counselling and people not being able to control their quirks. Heck you even have all might state that he has noticed a lot of people can't control their quirks which brings the question is quirk counselling only for young people in elementary school and not for older people because people like midoriya who had a quirk in his teenage years was never forced to do any quirk counselling by the government?!?!?!?

Overall, in my opinion quirks in MHA is a wasted potential of a plot point and topic. MHA fails to truly delve and dig deep into topics like how the government fails in providing help with quirk counselling or establishments that help people deal with their quirks, or how less people know how to control their quirks being a result for the quickly failing system or how badly the law is reinforced . These ideas intertwining with quirk inequality and how it affects peoples day to day life could of all been interesting points to explore.

If we want to do anything other than burn the horizon, the only way is towards community, away from egocentrism, with an onlook towards common good.

Let's stick to the anthem of the generation of love, as you named your peers and loyal supporters. The phrase 'We were born yesterday and everything is already our fault' is powerful and worrying. You have been given a pitiful lagecy by your ancestors. How do you defend yourself from taking a role of a victim and instead get actively involved in creating a brighter future?

Great question! It would be hard to change anything for the better if we put on the victim's cloak. The fact that in recent years it has become clear that there is a rebellion by people who have had enough is already a cause for optimism. When you put yourself in the role of the one who carries a scepter as a synonym of the leader of change, you move away from being a victim. And each one of us in this community carries it. In reality, we are taking the position that society is currently a victim and it is our task to defend it.

How?

We all contribute in our own way. The role of musicians is to connect people with positive messages. So by constantly reminding people about friendship, love and other social components that can be tapped into through music. In Slovenia, we have a lot of organisations that are trying to change the situation for the better in many different ways. It does not require much to at least educate oneself about what these organisations are doing. I have the feeling that many people would like to get involved and help. At the end of grammar school and at college, we were encouraged to find out about collective organisations. It was clear to them that many people would want to join of their own initiative once they knew what they stood for. I know many former classmates who are very active members and supporters of various movements. Even if we minimise our own negative energy on social networks, it is a big step towards a good state of society, and of mind.

You seem to care about a world that is increasingly drowning in chaos. You have become idols, not only of young people, but also of their parents. Is this a burden of responsibility or does it encourage you do even more activism?

It's a great feeling when the little ones take you for an idol. As a teenager, it was also inspiring to be surrounded by the music of Big Foot Mama and Siddharta. It gave me a message in a language that I could not compare with anything else. But our creativity does not depend on what people think of us or how they perceive us. But it is a great honour to know that you are one of those who encourage someone. Many people are listening, but not hearing. Joker Out is made up of five individuals who, in real life, when the cameras and the spotlights are off, are just normal guys. We went through all the processes of growing up on the streets, socialising and playing. We went through the process of going to school, and we were not problematic adolescents. Even today, our most extreme departure from an ideal is what 99% of young people do. To party sometimes. We are not outlaws by nature.

Your work is a beacon of light, a source of hope and strength. Many have done it before you, especially the Beatles. A lot has changed since their era, much of it unfortunately for the worse. How do you keep optimistic? Why is it worth the effort?

Every musician in history who has sung about ending war and living for love has failed miserably. I believe that at least those people who follow the messenger are convinced of peace and love. If every musician encourages someone to to do so, it's a hefty amount of opponents of hate. We are driven forward by love for life.

Writing texts is a responsible job, and you are baring your soul at the same time. Where is the line, to what lengths are you willing to go to protect the most vulnerable part of yourself?

I have never consciously inhibited the process of looking inside myself. But I feel that with age and experience I understand more and more what can lead me to a deeper state of mind. In the beginning I didn't dare to dig into myself. Today I have no problem in fully exposing my feelings, because they are, after all, states that happen of their own accord - and it is impossible to force them

No Slovenian artist has enjoyed such a fierce international success as Joker Out. Concerts in iconic European clubs are literally sold out in hours, even minutes. How do you accept fame? Is it a blessing or is there also a bit of fear?

There are certainly Slovenian musicians with international experience. Maybe not at our age, but that doesn't take away from their importance. We have achieved a very nice success here in terms of listeners, we have honed our skills and we have grown with the band as a collective. We have grasped who and what we are as a whole. We are a group of people who make music purely because we really enjoy it. Whatever feelings our music-making evokes, it all comes from us in the most sincere way, Fortunately, our music is liked by a larger crowd and we have managed to transmit our unforced joy, happiness, joy across national borders. There is no better catalyst for such a breakthrough than Eurovision, we chose the moment to participate wisely. It paid off as a successful project, because for a good band it doesn't matter which part of the world it comes from. It's important to be heard - and we were heard by a lot of people. The only thing that has changed so far is that the bonds between us have strengthened. Suddenly we have been forced to talk about emotions and experiences that we did not have before. There has been a lot of filtering of unfamiliar feelings. The desire to create increased a thousandfold for all five of us.

Are you aware of the role that the public attributes to you, to act as a beacon of light in a crowd of frustrated, bitter people?

No. I would hardly say that I can understand that. Every time I hear something like that, it strikes me that it is saying too much. I really cannot think of myself in such a strong context.

You are giving yourself away. You are constantly on the road, interviews, concerts, promotional tours. It's exhausting. How do you recover? What calms you down, fills you with grace?

It's true that we give a lot of ourselves. But we get so much more in return. Nothing calms me more than coming home and being close to my family. And of course the company of Kris, Jan, Jure and Nace. The people we were with friends before this euphoria, have stayed with us, this team surround us with a lot of love.

As a front-man and lyricist, you are even more exposed. You've crossed the magical 200 thousand followers on Instagram, which is a mega number, but also a mega stressful situation. Most young people who find themselves in such a situation turn to intoxicating substances. Can you consciously stop and say that you need time for yourself?

The only thing that made me a bit anxious was the sudden exposure to such a large audience'on social media. This brings with it unimaginable dimensions of human imagination, including malice. Imaginary stories emerge in which people literally compete to see who can come up with something more bizarre. This stress got to me at the beginning, because I felt that I had to defend myself in front of the public. In the end, I realised that I didn't need to convince anyone and that it was enough to know the truth. With the help of colleagues who have similar experiences, I have calmed down. As for the substances, I have a natural protection against those, because I am an incorrigible hypochonder. I dare not take an aspirin unless it is really urgent. Above all, I know when to stop.

You come from a close-knit, loving family. That is certainly a solid foundation on which to build your personality. What is their view of everything that happens to you?

They are very proud! Of all my achievements and of me for being able to pull off a music career combined with the academic milestone of graduating. My parents and my grandmother are definitely my biggest supporters. Superstition is the one I use the most. For Eurovision I had a special pair of underpants and I was haunted by the feeling that if I didn't wear them, everything would go to hell. Jan's mum gave me a lace clover, which I didn't dare leave in Ljubljana. I asked the stylist to sew it on my outfit as a precaution. I got a clay horseshoe from a little girl, and it went with me to Liverpool. It will seem strange to some, but I believe in energies and ghosts.

How do you strengthen your spiritual side?

Not very well. I wish I had managed to acquire more spiritual knowledge in the last year. For example, basic meditation techniques and the laws of yoga, because I am definitely not physically active enough. The feeling of being 90 years old eats up most of my spirit. My back hurts all the time. The best thing I do for inner growth is to read books. Not enough, but I'm going to get better. A little less phone scrolling and more self-reflection, that'll do the job! a little backstory:

the luxiem boys and shoto were under the impression that it was just them meeting up, with the addition of ninaur of course. however, nina had messaged you on discord after they had planned to meet up and asked if you would be down to surprise the boys since she knew how close you were with them. you agreed immediately and started making plans to travel to Paris (wink wonk). 

the day finally arrives and you’re standing outside the door of the airbnb that they were at. 'badum badum badum' you can hear your racing heartbeat in your ears, you’re nervously pacing to and fro with 3 boxes of pizzas in your hands waiting for nina to open the door to let you in. you could hear their voices from outside the door, they were currently streaming. this was your first time meeting any of your co-workers in person and you were lowkey freaking out a little. suddenly you hear nina go, “oh hold on, i think our pizzas are here!” you sucked in a breath and tried to calm yourself down. she opens the door and goes, “oh, wait a minute…who’s this?” nina stands to the side to let you in and you smile, saying, “did you guys order some pizza?”. you see the boys’ eyes widen in shock and next thing you know, you’re engulfed in a big group hug.

his eyes widens and he’d go, “no fucking way…”

after the group hug is over, he hugs you again tight and says, “it’s so good to meet you in person.”

when sitting on the couch together with the boys, vox would sit next to you and rest his arm behind you, on the back of the couch

vox would want to spend as much as time as he can one-on-one with you, so he plans to do lots of collabs with you. him being there for moral support while you play FNAF being one of the many collabs

when you get jumpscared, you whine at him and he coos at you saying, “aaawww…does y/n need my help? did they get jumpscared again by bonnie? aawwww…”

you’d swat at him telling him to shut up and insist that you’re fine. the smug bastard just chuckles and says, “alright then, if you say so love.”

he would be flirting and bantering with you so much during the collabs, talking about how cute you are when you blush and get flustered

your fans would go crazy and say, “(you and vox’s ship name) fans are well fed during the off collab."

vox would definitely offer to carry all your bags even though you insist that you don’t need help

under the influence of alcohol, vox might let it slip that he likes you but you were too drunk to register what he said

to help get you home safely, he'd princess carry you back to the airbnb

if you have a hangover the next day he’d tease you first and say with a smirk on his face, “i didn’t know you were a lightweight.”

you’d roll your eyes and tell him to shut the fuck up. at that he would chuckle and say, “ah…but you love it when i tease you.”

he would then hand you aspirin and water, then leave to go cook some soup to help you feel better

when you thank him for helping you get over your hangover, he’d just say, “of course, i’m glad i could help y/n.”

when you're leaving, vox gives you a long tight hug and speaks softly so that only you could hear him, “i loved spending time with you, let’s do this again soon. i want to spend more time with you.”

you’d rub his back and say, “it’s okay voxy, we can still hang out online. i enjoyed spending time with you too you silly demon man.”

mysta’s eyes widen and his jaw drops, he can’t believe that you’re right there, in person, in front of him. he feels like he’s dreaming

after the group hug is over, he would say, “you’re shorter than i imagined.”, chuckling right after

you’d punch his arm and glare at him saying, “is that how you say hi to me huh? mysta rias from nijisanji en’s luxiem.”

he’d then hug you and say, “i’m kidding, i’m kidding, it’s good to have you here y/n.”

like vox, i feel like mysta would want to spend a lot of one-on-one time with you, since well, he has a crush on you

he would try to be subtle about his intentions but we all know how that will go lmao

he would arrange for as many collabs as he can with you and gets a bit jealous when the other boys arrange multiple collabs with you too

during your collabs he’d try to make you flustered and he loves the fact that he’s able to see your reactions to his flirting in person

although, when you flirt back, mysta becomes a spluttering, stuttering mess and the fact that you’re able to see his reaction in person makes it 10 times better

you then tease him about it saying, “aaawww is little mysta all flustered?”

mysta would also be very helpful, lending you equipment when you want to stream and helping you with technical difficulties whenever they pop up

like vox, you and mysta would also have many late night talks, he’d fall even more in love with you after those talks because he feels like you understand him and that you would never judge him

mysta would constantly ask if you’d want to go out to get some food with him, secretly hoping that the others won’t tag along

he’d also set up movie nights where if you guys watch a scary film, he’d instinctively hug you and hide his face behind your shoulder

but he’ll end up holding your hand throughout the entire movie which he is secretly really happy about

when the group of you go to a bar for drinks, both of you get absolutely hammered because you both are lightweights

you guys end up giggling a whole lot on the way home, stumbling and almost falling flat on your faces multiple times, resulting in vox needing to hold on to the both of you all the way home

the next day, both of you are down with a hangover, mysta stumbles into your room and collapses on your bed saying, “urrghhh y/n i feel like shit.” you groan and respond, “uurrgghh me too.”

“can i stay in your bed with you for today? i don’t wanna be alone.” “sure mysta.”

you both end up sleeping the day away with shoto and vox bringing the both of you aspirin, water as well as your comfort foods to help with the hangover

when you're leaving, mysta comes up to you and gives you a hug, saying, "thank you for making this trip so enjoyable and fun, i'll miss you. let's meet up again soon okay?"

you hug him a little tighter and thank him for such an enjoyable trip as well, agreeing to another off collab soon

luca

luca would yell your name and be the first one to run towards you with his arms wide open. ugh i love luca sm he's so cute uweee

he would squeeze you to his booba so tight, chuckle and say, “it’s y/n! in person! POGGGGGG!”

throughout the whole trip luca would constantly be making tik tok references and doing the “AUUGGHHHHH” sound, making you laugh so much

when you guys are just hanging out in the living room, he’d say, “hey y/n, check out this tik tok.” the both of you would spend hours watching tik tok videos with each other and laughing your asses off

luca would organise as many collabs with you as possible, one of the many collabs might be It Takes Two, since the both of you have never played it before and luca thought that it’ll be a good idea to play it with you during the off collab

luca plays as cody and you play as may (or vice versa), when you guys get to the part where cody gets the nails and may gets the hammer, luca would keep shooting the nails at you/hammering you down with the hammer and laughing all while doing it. once you get free of being nailed/hammered down, you’d run after him with the hammer/nails, yelling, “LUCCCAAAA!!!”” to try and hammer/nail him down as revenge. the both of you would progress through the game super slowly because of luca and his trolling

luca finds it super cute when you run at him to try and get revenge from all the trolling that he’s doing 

so prepare yourself for luca griefing you a lot for the whole duration of this game

from all the tik toks that the both of you have watched together, a repertoire of inside jokes were created and when the group does collabs together, the both of you would be giggling at jokes that only the both of you get, leaving the rest confused

when the group of you would go out for food, luca would always be down to try something he’s never eaten before. so when he tries something he likes, he’d look at you and go, “y/n, this is really good! i like it!” and you’d clap and say, “pogggg! i’m so proud of you luca!”

when the group of you goes shopping, luca would always find a way to make you laugh. luca would pick up a pair of sunglasses that look really bizarre and say, “hey y/n, you think i should get these glasses?”, you’d giggle and tell him that he looks ridiculous in those glasses

when you try on outfits and ask luca for his opinion on them, he’d always go, “y/n poggggg! yes, get them!” and when you go back into the changing room, he’d blush a little because he thinks you look amazing in everything

when the group goes out to a bar for a drink, like with mysta, both of you get absolutely hammered

luca and you would start doing random dances and giggling when the other looks stupid doing it, not caring if people were looking

vox and nina being the ones to make sure the both of you get back safely

somehow luca doesn't get a hangover, but you do, so luca brings you aspirin and a glass of water. he then says, "it's okay y/n, just pog!" you groan at that and say, "luca please."

luca would be there to help you get over your hangover, bringing more water whenever you wanted some, going out to get your favourite food and keeping you company

when you're leaving, luca engulfs you in a hug and says with a pout, "nooo y/n why're you leaving me?" 

you pat him gently on the back and assure him that more off collabs will be planned in the future and that you both can still hang out online

he'd nod while still hugging you and says, "thank you for making this trip so fun y/n, i'll miss you."

ike would be one of the last few to join the group hug because he’s just so shocked that you’re literally standing right in front of him

ike’s social battery drains pretty quickly but he’d make sure that he’s around you, you guys don’t have to talk, he just loves being around you

ike would arrange to do multiple collabs with you, a clubhouse games 51 collab being one of the many collabs

since ike has a crush on you, flirty ike comes out to play, occasionally slipping in flirty comments whenever the chance arises

when you guys play connect 4, both of you get equally competitive so you’d both be taunting each other and trying to trick each other into making a wrong move

when ike wins and you just flop back onto the backrest of the couch feeling defeated, he sits closer to you saying, “aww you did really well y/n, you were 1 step away from beating me.”

he’d rub small circles on the back of your hand to help you feel better. i’m ascendingggggg

shu is such a memer and has such zoomer humour that you’ll be laughing tons throughout the whole trip and shu appreciates that you laugh at his zoomer jokes

shu would also want to collab a lot with you, so plan a valorant training week with him as your coach

you’ve been watching all the other hopconners and want to give valorant a shot

you’d ask shu to coach you with the pien face and hoo boy, how could shu say no to that face, you got him blushing

he’s secretly so happy that you asked him to teach you

during the valorant stream, shu would sit beside you and get you to do some aim training first

at first you’d struggle with flicking your crosshair to the targets’ heads so shu stands behind you with a hand resting on the back of your chair, the other on your hand (asking permission first of course) to guide you on how to flick to the dummy’s heads. this made me blush (//▽//)

you’d get the hang of it really quickly after he demonstrated to you and he’d be so proud of you saying, “eyyyy! you got it y/n!”

when you guys play unranked valorant games together, shu would definitely try his best because he wants to impress you. so when you hype him up as he’s getting kills and compliment him after saying that he’s absolutely cracked at the game, his heart flutters and he gets a little flustered. he’s so cute

You know, thinking about it, I was wrong before. Nico has more reason to trust Hades than Percy does Poseidon at the time of the incident in TLO!

If you think about it, Percy's only evidence that Nico should've known it was a trap is that "[Nico] know[s] what [Hades]'s like", but... Nico's view of Hades would be much different from Percy's. Remember, Nico has a room in the palace at this time; Hades couldn't send him to his room the way he does later if he didn't have a room to be sent to. He's been living there! Hades allows him to live there! At this point Nico doesn't know that Hades used to visit him, Maria and Bianca regularly or that he actively stepped in to protect Nico and Bianca from Zeus and keep them safe until the time of Titan's Curse, but he does know that Hades is letting him live in his palace. Gods don't do that. Percy has to nearly die to even get a brief visit to Poseidon's palace, and he very openly knows that Poseidon wouldn't have claimed him to begin with if he didn't need him. Not to mention Poseidon has that whole thing where he explicitly tells Percy he wishes he didn't exist, which... is the sort of thing that's gonna have a negative impact on how you view your dad.

So when Percy says that Nico knows what Hades is like, what he's saying is basically... "The Underworld is evil and Hades is evil, how could you not know that," which is kind of an incredibly shitty thing to say to the child of Hades living in the Underworld? I mean, it is kind of just "You shouldn't trust your father because I think he's evil and the Underworld is evil", if I was Nico I'd be very concerned about what Percy thought of me when he started spouting that shit. Anyway, while Hades is far from a good father at this point in the series Nico still knows him as the father who is letting him live in his palace because he has nowhere to go, stepping well outside the usual bounds of gods interacting with their kids in the process. Hell, unless I've forgotten something (possible), it's entirely possible that by this point in the timeline Hades has already told Nico about Camp Jupiter (which would show a huge amount of faith in him, again above and beyond any other godly parent). Hades can be kind of a dick because all gods are dicks to their kids, but Nico has no particular reason not to trust him! Especially given Nico has exactly zero other adults in his life offering him any support and at this point in the timeline he doesn't remember his mother, so Hades is basically all he's got and he has no points of comparison other than his also-a-child sister who kinda sorta abandoned him (not going into her reasoning here but it was A Thing that would probably influence the way Nico thought about... caregivers, I guess, for lack of a better term to describe the twelve year old put in charge of her little brother) and Minos (who is... Minos. Enough said). It makes sense that when Hades says "Do this small thing for me and I'll tell you about your mother" Nico believes him, because while Hades has been awful to Nico at times there's no evidence that he's ever lied to him. Why should Nico doubt his father who gave him a place to stay when he had nothing and no one just because that father happens to be Hades and the place to stay happens to be the Underworld?

...Also in hindsight knowing just how much Hades spoils Nico (for a godly parent at least) in the future makes the "You know what Hades is like" thing kind of hilarious. Wild that this post has 11,000 likes when it’s spreading such blatant fucking disinformation.

“Sabra” is word Israelis use to refer to an Israeli Jew. The "longer statement" attempts to refute the idea that Sabra was named after the Hebrew term by saying that the massacre happened in the 1980s, and the character didn't exist until the 1990s. Clearly, this person didn't do the world's most minimal amount of research. Let's get into it real quick--

Sabra's first full appearance was in Incredible Hulk #256, published in February 1981. She had a named cameo from the same run six issues earlier, in February 1980. So she was a planned and named character in development at least as early as 1979. The Sabra and Shatila massacre began on 16 September 1982, two years after Sabra made her debut in the comics.

Given her name and original design, Marvel's Sabra is likely influenced by the character named "Sabraman" by Uri Fink, an Israeli comic book creator. Sabraman's origins date back to 1978-- four full years before the Sabra and Shatila massacres.

This is a nitpicky point, but why are you following a Jewish discourse blog if not for nitpicky points? The Israeli Defence Forces were involved in the Sabra and Shatila massacres. There's no question about that. They authorized it, provided funds for it, and offered logistical support for it. But they did not carry it out. A Lebanese Christian Nationalist militia carried it out. Why lie about that? Israeli forces supported the murder of civilians! They lit up the sky for days so that the massacre could continue into the night! Why do you need to lie and say they were holding the guns? Is what they did not bad enough for you? This is what I mean when I say that you guys would rather resort to conspiracy theories and misinformation than actually accurately criticize Israel for once.

So where did I get all these facts? Did I have to do some deep dive into comics of the 1970s and 80s? Pull up niche and obscure military journals about the Lebanese Civil War? Nope! I got all that information by... looking at Wikipedia pages. I did double-check Incredible Hulk #250 to ensure that she was already named Sabra in 1980. She was. I also looked around for any articles that backed up the claim that fetuses were cut out of women's wombs during the Sabra and Shatila massacre and... I didn't find any. Al Jazeera doesn't even mention it. If you can find a reputable source for that, please send it to me! Until then, I'm gonna rule this as flat-out blood libel.

You may be asking yourself, why didn't Marvel change Sabra's name in 1982 when the tragedy occurred? Aren't they at least responsible for that? And personally, I think you'd be right. But Marvel didn't budge on Black Panther (named July 1966) when the Black Panther Party (named October 1966) was founded. It doesn't seem like they were interested in making character changes due to political pressures back then. Whether that's a good thing or not is a different story.

And finally, no, this post is not anything close to an endorsement of the new Captain America movie. I'd been planning on boycotting the movie named after an antisemitic conspiracy theory, from the company that butchers any Jewish representation they don't completely ignore, since before y'all found out about Sabra's existence. I just honestly thought the antisemitic nonsense about this character would be coming from the right, not the left.

I'm pulling this post from an ask I recently answered from someone who was struggling with frequent relapse. Thought this advice might apply to a lot of us:

Use timed reminders to hold yourself accountable to consistently practicing self care before, during, and after eating. Especially when you're going places like - out to a restaurant with friends and family, event where surprise food might be offered, holiday party, etc. Self-care can be whatever works for you - writing down positive affirmations, meditating, taking a long hot bath, taking a little walk and moving your body, gently reminding the bully in your head that what they're saying to you is not helpful to you in the long run, doing some stretches, creating some art...literally whatever self-care looks like for you, but create a self-care regimen around eating properly.

Create a self-care regimen for lapses, too. Hopefully you won't need it, but understand that self-care means investing in resources and safety nets for yourself in the event that you might have a hard time, rather than punishing yourself by letting yourself fail. Think about it in advance so that you are not struggling to come up with a self-care plan when you're already in crisis: what are you going to need in order to help gently pull yourself out of a lapse? Failing is human and struggling is common in eating disorders. Learning to be kind to yourself when you fail and growing from your mistakes is a huge part of ED recovery, since we tend to be big self-punishers. Examine your lapse without self-hatred. What led to it? What can you practice learning from it? It's okay if it takes practice to learn, some of us weren't raised with the self-care knowledge that we needed.

Create a support system! Reaching out can be hard and scary, but surrounding yourself with the right influences can really give us a boost when we need it the most. If you trust your friends with this, let them know what they can do to support you, whether it's reminders of how much they love you and want health for you, or ways they can help you stay calm and well. If there's anyone you can reach out to when you're struggling, practicing asking for help can be a really good skill.

Healing is not linear, and lapses and relapses don't mean you've lost what you've learned. Keep on going, I believe in you!

One thing that gets lost in ship discourse (or its hyper-positive opposite) is that regardless of your feelings on a ship, in order to tell a story, the character relationships do and should have an impact on a character's story arc, and not all relationships are going to offer the same emotional weight throughout any given character's story.

This is particularly true of actual play, wherein each player character is running a separate story as a protagonist, and therefore you have to consider each of them as an individual thread within one larger narrative, on top of the narrative itself.

That being said, the farther you get into the story and the closer to the end you are, the ways those threads can interweave get culled, simply by circumstances. Relationships (platonic, romantic, familial, etc) change over time, and whether they are narratively compelling changes as well. In contrast, "ship" is generally used to suggest a dynamic an individual audience member finds compelling, which may or may not have anything to do with the narrative, even if the dynamic is interesting for reasons of narrative potential (that isn't ultimately explored within canon). These are distinct concepts in terms of analysis. So as a disclaimer, this post is about character relationships within the narrative as it exists—essentially, what makes the story that exists work as well as it does, in the end.

Now that we've got all that out of the way, let's talk about Caleb.

Caleb's problem for much of the campaign is one of survival and self-preservation. His goal is simply to last long enough to find a way to go back in time. Because that is a very open goal, it doesn't inherently have much to tie him to another character in a relationship sense. He is not looking for that, he does not see himself as worthy of it, and it's really not a necessary narrative question, regardless of what attraction he does have.

But over time (and, I would argue, in a way that is fairly singular among the Nein, but I won't get into that here), his priorities begin to shift. Many of his needs are now met in ways that they previously weren't, allowing him to fully consider what he wants. For instance, between the start of the war and the time they reach Xhorhas, he has changed his mind about becoming involved in this war—because he is not being forced into it by possible conscription. He has significantly more options than he did at the start.

What he ends up realizing, as he finds the opportunity to put an end to the war, is that he cannot trust his own judgment. There is near universal support to end the war—even the nations involved are there because of what they view as existential threats. That opinion is not in question. But everything else is. Caleb is a victim of manipulation and brainwashing, and this is very apparent when he starts pleading with the scourger prisoner of war to give him some kind of proof that people like him can change.

And this is not something that anyone else of the Nein can offer him. They can tell him that they think he is a good person and that they trust him, but because of his history—and because he knows how smart he is, and how far he can fall—this isn't something he can take at face value, especially given that they have not seen or known him at his worst, and have not experienced it either.

Yasha may be able to offer some guidance in that area, but she is working through similar issues at both a different pace and in different ways than he is—she isn't seeking any situation where she would make potentially world-shaping decisions or have influence over others like he would. His goals are singularly risky. Veth comes closest to this, in that she very briefly considers prolonging the war to alleviate her own suffering, but it's not a decision she's ever forced to make.

(Honestly, thinking about this, an arc in which Veth does take that deal with Isharnai is a fascinating alternative universe to consider—it would certainly give her the opportunity to relate to Caleb in this way, but it would probably take another fifty episodes before Caleb could even bring himself to consider forgiving her, given it would be in direct conflict to the one thing he's been working at for a third of the campaign up until then. Still, a fascinating consideration!)

So between Caleb attempting to sway the scourger and going to Astrid's house in secret, this is the point at which it seems like the Nein cannot help him do the rest of the work. They have done a lot to get him here and considering what else he wants! But they can't offer him what that is, which is essentially tangible corroboration of what they've already offered.

And at this point in the campaign when taken as a whole, there's only one character who can actually offer that. Because to have real emotional weight, what Caleb is looking for is someone who is as smart as he has, who has made a similarly horrific decision even in spite of that intelligence, and who has now committed to actual change.

It's the commitment to actual change that is difficult, because it requires a support structure—and in hindsight, there's not enough time left to build that up for someone like Astrid or Eadwulf, but it's already partially in place for Essek.

(We can debate all day long about what could've been different if the hiatus never happened, or the campaign had lasted longer, but this is specifically about the campaign that we have. I think there is also an argument to be made that Astrid or Eadwulf would've required a much longer and more intensive timeframe to reach that point even if the campaign had continued than the format really offered, because they have preconceived notions about Caleb that complicates their ability to take what he says at face value even if they care about him succeeding in his goals—but that's also not relevant to this point.)

But I do think this is why Essek progresses very quickly, and is largely committed to aiding them by 124—he already has been aiding them, and has expressed loyalty to them above anyone else.

This is not as much of a leap as it may appear to some, because even by 91 and 97, he had done significant introspection on his own time. This is only a continuation of how he has been characterized thus far. He's expressed doubt from a very early point, whereas Astrid does not begin to express doubt (regardless of whether she feels it, because this is about capacity for willing admittance) until after the dinner with Trent.

What ends up happening is that Essek's the one who actually calls Caleb on things. He gives him an ultimatum with the conversation about Trent when the Nein won't. He offers reason and perspective in the paper room when the rest of the Nein get impatient. He checks off all of the boxes of what Caleb is looking for (which is essentially a narrative mirror), and very early into the Nein's trip through Aeor, Caleb seems to have forgiven him, and his fears and misgivings erode from there.

Only this corroboration, because his opinion of Essek is specifically about his opinion of his own capacity for change, allows him to recognize that returning to the past would simply make him the same person he had been at 17, and finally put that plan, the person that he was, and his parents to rest. If he is not able to be anything other than that boy, then he has no reason to not remain as such, and return to the past; but if he believes himself capable of change, then the question of going back in time is one of leaving behind the person he is now in favor of the boy who made that choice. He is asked, if he believes himself capable of change, to acknowledge that he was that person once, but can now be more than that and move beyond it.

And the proof that he needs in order to affirm that when he is given the opportunity to do so is standing next to him.

Fundamentally, this is not related to Caleb's long-term relationship with Essek at all. This could have been the end of it—they could've parted ways and the story would've still been told and completed.

But I think it is important that a) Essek does get to have some happiness, and b) part of that is with Caleb (though this still doesn't have any bearing on platonic vs romantic, only that they have some kind of close mutual relationship in the long run). On a very basic level, because he is now in this position of being corroborating evidence for Caleb himself, Essek becomes a stand-in for how the narrative sees Caleb, and how Caleb views himself.

If the narrative condemns him and leaves him out to dry, it is an implicit reflection on Caleb—and directly conflicts with the narrative implication that Caleb is not solely worth condemnation. And however much it has nothing to do with romance or a relationship of that kind, Caleb's choice to care about him in the long run is an acknowledgement of being willing to care for and forgive himself.

The fundamental problem for American presidents who have attempted to work with Benjamin Netanyahu is that Benjamin Netanyahu does not care what American presidents think. An exceptional English orator who was raised in Philadelphia, Netanyahu believes that he can outmaneuver and outlast American politicians on their own turf. “I know America,” he said in a private 2001 conversation that later leaked. “America is something that can easily be moved.” This attitude constituted a sharp break; in the past, even hard-line politicians like the maverick general turned premier Ariel Sharon responded to pressure from American presidents.

But during Bill Clinton’s presidency and again during Barack Obama’s, Netanyahu changed the equation. He repeatedly blew off American entreaties on issues including the peace process and Iran, and turned his willingness to stand up to U.S. presidents into an electoral selling point with his base. Faced with this unprecedented recalcitrance, different Democratic administrations tried different tactics for wrangling Bibi. Some attempted to compel his compliance with hard public pressure, only to have Netanyahu wait out a U.S.-imposed settlement freeze, then agitate against the Iran nuclear deal in Congress and the American media. Others attempted to settle disputes privately with Netanyahu, on the assumption that the Israeli leader would respond better if not openly antagonized.

None of this worked and none of it arrested Netanyahu’s drift further to the right. As both vice president and chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Joe Biden had a front-row seat to these failures. So did his close-knit foreign-policy team, including longtime staffers such as Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. Recognizing the errors of the past, they have charted a different course aimed at outmaneuvering Netanyahu, seeking to succeed where their predecessors did not. This approach predates the current Gaza conflict, but has reached full expression in the past months. It explains why Biden has full-throatedly supported Israel against Hamas while simultaneously assailing the country’s hard-right governing coalition. And it offers a glimpse at the administration’s intended endgame for the war—and for Netanyahu himself.

In 2015, I visited another country with an ascendant right-wing populist leader: Hungary. Today, the country is essentially aligned with Russia against America and its allies. At the time, its prime minister, Viktor Orbán, was escalating his rhetoric against the European Union and the West. As part of the trip, my group met with officials at the American embassy, who explained their impossible predicament: Whenever Western countries would publicly pressure Orbán on his policies, he would refashion that pressure into electoral support, leaving his critics with no good options. Stay silent and he would win; speak up and he would also win.

Right-wing populists such as Orbán and Netanyahu thrive on posturing against outside antagonists, using external criticism to bolster their bona fides as strongmen who can stand up to the international community. This insight has shaped Biden’s approach to Netanyahu—not by preventing the president from publicly fighting with the prime minister, but by influencing which fights he picks. Simply put, Biden has opted to challenge Netanyahu on issues that splinter his support rather than consolidate it. In practice, this means strategically targeting policies where Netanyahu is on the wrong side of Israeli public opinion and forcing him to choose between his hard-right partners and the rest of the country.

Netanyahu’s disastrous attempt to overhaul the Israeli judiciary offers a case in point. The proposed legislation was drafted by right-wing hard-liners with no opposition input and would have subordinated Israel’s courts to its parliament. The attempted power grab provoked the largest sustained protest movement in Israeli history. Polls repeatedly showed that most Israelis opposed the overhaul and wanted lawmakers to come up with new compromise reforms conceived by consensus. And so that’s precisely what the Biden administration began calling for.

“Hopefully, the prime minister will act in a way that he is going to try to work out some genuine compromise,” Biden told reporters in March. “But that remains to be seen.” In July, he repeated the same point to Netanyahu, then reiterated it to the press: “The focus should be on pulling people together and finding consensus.” As the State Department emphasized at the time, “We believe that fundamental changes should be pursued with the broadest possible base of support.” By placing himself firmly on the side of the Israeli majority, Biden was able to prevent Netanyahu from turning his criticism into an electoral asset. After all, it’s hard to paint someone as anti-Israel, as Netanyahu once did with Obama, when they are expressing the opinion of most Israelis.

Biden understands that Netanyahu’s position is a precarious one. His governing coalition received just 48.4 percent of the vote, and took power only because of a quirk of the Israeli electoral system. The coalition relies on an alliance of unpopular far-right parties to stay afloat, whom Netanyahu must appease to remain in office. Biden has exploited this weakness and repeatedly poked at it. Rather than directly confronting Netanyahu, he has called out his extremist partners and in this way heightened the contradictions within Netanyahu’s coalition, undermining its stability and gradually eroding its support in the polls.

In July, Biden told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria that Netanyahu’s government has “the most extremist members of cabinets that I’ve seen” in Israel, noting that “I go all the way back to Golda Meir.” This past week, at a campaign event hosted by a former chair of AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobbying group, Biden went even further, singling out a far-right minister by name. “This is the most conservative government in Israel’s history,” the president said. Itamar “Ben-Gvir and company and the new folks, they don’t want anything remotely approaching a two-state solution.” This was Biden’s approach in action: criticizing Israel during wartime in front of a pro-Israel crowd, and doing so in a way that nonetheless denied Netanyahu any opening. As long as it’s Biden versus Ben-Gvir, rather than Biden versus Bibi, the president holds the upper hand.

Biden has brought the same strategy to bear on the issue of settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, which has accelerated under the cover of Israel’s campaign in Gaza. Netanyahu’s coalition is unable to clamp down on these extremists and their terrorism because it is beholden to these extremists. But most Israelis have no desire to mortgage the security of Israel and its indispensable relationship to the United States in favor of some far-flung hilltop settlers in West Bank regions that few Israelis could locate on a map.

Knowing this, Biden has begun unrolling a series of unilateral measures intended to raise the price of settler violence and pit Netanyahu and his allies against the Israeli public. Earlier this month, the administration announced visa bans on those implicated in settler violence, spurring similar actions by the EU, Britain, and France. “We have underscored to the Israeli government the need to do more to hold accountable extremist settlers who have committed violent attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank,” Blinken said. “As President Biden has repeatedly said, those attacks are unacceptable.” This past week, the U.S. froze the sale of more than 20,000 M16 rifles to Israel over concerns that they might find their way into the hands of violent settlers.

Hamas’s October 7 slaughter has put Biden’s approach to the ultimate test. Like most Israelis, he wants to see Hamas vanquished. And like most Israelis, he does not trust Netanyahu and his far-right allies to do it. This has left the president with few appealing options. Publicly denying Israel support during what it sees as an existential war wouldn’t just go against Biden’s personal values. It would collapse all the credibility he has accrued with the Israeli public through his careful diplomacy during his presidency. And it would give Netanyahu the American antagonist he desperately craves, providing the floundering premier with a lifeline he would use to reunite the right behind him.

To avoid this outcome, Biden has backed Israel’s military campaign, but worked nonstop to shape its contours and limit its fallout on civilians and the rest of the region, tapping into the reservoir of goodwill he has built with the Israeli public. The president has also upped the pressure on Netanyahu by assailing his coalition partners and explicitly calling for a new, more moderate Israeli government. U.S. officials have leaked that they think Netanyahu will not last, and Biden has told the Israeli leader to think about what lessons he’d impart to his successor.

In other words, Biden has once again placed himself on the side of the Israeli majority, in order to undermine Netanyahu and shape the political future of the entire country. It’s one of the biggest bets of his presidency, and when the guns finally fall silent, it could determine the fate of the broader Middle East.

Developing the subject, how do you see this anime au? Sailor moon alike relationship? Should it also be a horror cause of creepy natural ghosts?

I've never seen Sailor Moon so I can't comment, but it definitely seems like Danny Phantom was heavily influenced by Yu Yu Hakusho, so it wouldn't take a lot of mental gymnastics to envision an anime version of DP being a lot like this, mixing humor and drama and the supernatural. I'd love to see some actual horror thrown in, though. Animes like Vampire Hunter D and Bio-Booster Armor Guyver come to mind. Guyver's not actually billed as horror, but there's enough body horror, gore, and horror elements in it to qualify, in my opinion. I mean, look at this thing, it's terrifying:

Aside: This ask got me nostalgic for Guyver and I went and watched a few episodes. (The last time I saw it was in the 90s on VHS.) I was floored. There is so much it has in common with DP that I wonder if Hartman wasn't inspired by it as well.

Compare: the black-haired, blue-eyed MC (Sho) who's not the best student, had a disfiguring experience involving something with lots of power and now has two different personas, human and non-human, the latter having incredible strength and unearthly energy that he uses to combat threatening entities that are Not Of This World; best friends are a glasses-wearing geek and a girl who's also the show's love interest, completing the trio. Of course Sho spends a great deal of time protecting his friends, but they also cheer him on from the sidelines and offer help when able, much like Tucker and Sam.

But get this: The only other person with a Guyver armor happens to be the villain (spoiler: not really the villain, it's all an act, and eventually they team up). This is the guy:

Long hair. V-hairline. Sideburns. Thick black eyebrows. The English dub isn't that good, but this guy's voice is deep and nice to listen to. He's supposed to be a student but looks like he's 35.

Anyway. DP anime.

I don't see much changing at all plot-wise. Upping the rating to at least PG-13 is definitely prescribed, so there can be things like blood and fantasy violence and adult humor. Let Danny say "hell", "damn", "bastard", and the occasional "shit", like in YYH. Naturally, Vlad and Danny would start out as rivals before laying aside their differences and teaming up to save the world—which is exactly the formula that YYH and BBAG follow in terms of enemies-to-allies.

I'm imagining a steady progression of saving each other's butts and fighting increasingly powerful enemies until it comes to a point that they both realize they'd die for each other. (Literally Kuwabara and Yusuke lmao.)

In fact, just do a DP/YYH wardrobe swap for all the characters, because Dan Dan Phantom Show is something I'd pay money to see 😂
