Realizing you're getting better is such a bonkers feeling

We were discussing Schopenhauer in my philosophy class today. Schopenhauer is one of the better know pessimists-- his general outlook was that pleasure is merely the absence of pain, and the human condition was always either suffering or bored.

A year ago, I would have fully agreed with that take. That life is suffering, and if you're not suffering you're going to be bored out of your mind. But as I was listening to my professor explain Schopenhauer's take on life, my only thought was, "That guy's full of shit."

Life is full of pain, that's true. It is inevitable that as sentient creatures, we feel and understand pain. But that doesn't mean life is only pain. Life is full of joy and wonder. Seeing a dog, hugging your friends, baking for the hell of it. Life has purpose and meaning.

I sat there, at 11:30 in the morning, surrounded by other students, listening to the professor rattle on about pessimism and Schopenhauer. And I realized I was getting better. And that was one of the nicest, weirdest feelings I've had in a while. I hope whoever reads this gets that feeling too <3
