Okay I- I saw the post from Claire that uh kinda confirms theories that BTTWS may be about a close friend having a m*scarriage and it all makes sense and Claire even quotes it and my heart HURTS for her I mean I've been there both ways too I've also been the friend up all night while someone very close to me went through it and also a very premature birth it's all gutwrenching (and side note I almost wanted to warn my friend not to listen to BTTWS bc it's heartbreaking but the more I listen to it the more I see how actually perfectly and beautifully Taylor put it which I can go on about in another post but) I just- it- it's still bothering me- that she uses the phrase "could've been, would've been, should've been..." as part of the chorus of that song, a very specific phrase, and then she literally used that phrase as the TITLE of her J**** M**** song (do we have a calcium harvest like name for that asshole yet?)... but so like- she never does ANYTHING like that unintentionally. That's too much of a coincidence for those songs not to be somehow connected and it is BOTHERING me it's legitimately kept me up at midnight pondering what is going on it just. It bothers me. I love Taylor. I love Claire. So much pain and heartache I just sgstfisostsotsotsost
#and also the possible explanations i can come up with i just idk#like could it just be as simple as the phrase just worked well in totally separate contexts but since it does seem odd to use that twice...#...like maybe that's why they're both bonus/3am songs bc they wouldn't fit the narrative/would be confusing?#or is it the other way around were they both purposely put together on the 3am#and then like. . did it happen to Taylor (and if it did i think it was early on not with Joe as ppl speculated but that's just theory) and..#...she wanted to get it out there like she has with a lot on this album#and maybe she thought it would be ambiguous enough that ppl wouldn't guess it was about miscarriage rather a metaphor for#her girlhood/the person she might have been/something like that#but then when everyone started with the miscarriage theory bc I'm sorry especially if you've been through it you hear that song and that's#the only thing it could be but so was it like oof they figured it out and so did Claire decide to share her experience to kinda help? ??#like again obvs either way Claire did go through it and i just feel for her so much and it makes perfect sense that Taylor would have been#there grieving alongside her but the song is sung as if it's happened to Taylor...#...but then again she could be doing what Ed did with small bump and singing from the perspective of the mother idk idk#just... why did she specifically use that phrase for both those songs. she's a genius lyricist she could use another for one of them but she#chose to use that for both songs so i just#but bottom line I DO NOT WANT TO PUT OUT SPECULATION ABOUT TAYLORS PRIVATE LIFE so please nobody take this and run with it ok#I'm just theorizing on songs she chose to put out there and we always interpret her songs how we do and sometimes she confirms things#sometimes she doesn't so I'm just like getting this out there but at the same time like PLEASE nobody go try and talk to her /bother#her about that topic that's one we i think need to just not bring up unless she does/makes it clear to do so#but yeah i just fully went on in the tags huh. ..you know what that means i gotta do#if you've read this far you now owe me an ask :) hi

You guys are giving me way too much power by letting me talk about acting
@minecant you wanted me to rant about Techno and Wilbur's acting? Well, you asked for it
Let's start with Techno bc I realized something this morning and I cannot get it out of my head, let's go.
Techno has a really peculiar way of acting compared to anyone else, his character is a lot more aware of the fourth wall than any other character is, and actually having to keep in check a character that, to certain acting degrees, could be almost considered self-aware is actually harder than you can imagine, and of course everything that's kinda hard in scripted acting goes to a whole new level of difficoult in improv; but on the other hand, his type of acting (more specifically: the voice acting) is on the same page of 3 other characters: Tubbo, Fundy and Niki. Follow me on this, alright? The basically only thing that these 4 characters, that narratively are so different from each other,is the way they are voiced. All four of then have a really specific way of talking and talking pattern, to the point where even if you were to put the voices in a voice-changer you could still know what character is talking just because of the way they talk. Let me elaborate: Fundy usually his voice doesn't let a lot of emotions through and his speech is usually straight to the point, keeping his tone medium and trying to keep his voice relaxed; Niki's usual tone is soft and lighter, is easy to not hear it with her low tone of voice and higher pitch that give her a kinder undertone; Tubbo's tone is also one in a softer scale and lower of volume, but where Niki is easy to miss Tubbo lets a bit more emotion in all phrases to make himself pop out, he doesn't tend to go straight to the point in conversations and his tone is pretty much constant; Techno doesn't let emotions shine through his voice, more like Fundy, but to the extreme, keeping a completly monotone type of speech in basically all the situations and isn't very talkative, a character that talks one when he feels like it's needed and goes straight to the point of the conversation, not caring how that makes him come across to the other characters.
These 4 have incredibly set in stone characters, keeping always to their own set of acting rules for them. It's not easy to set yourself acting rules for your characters in an improv, but if you manage to do it's an in incredible help. Even Wilbur's character was more unhinged under that point of view, his "standard" continuing to change slightly as his mental stage declined.
But you know where does the actual strenght of having these things set in stone for your characters? That the emotions are a lot more powerfull. Let's think about it, why most of the emotive scene shock us? You can usually feel the emotions because the tone of voice lets these emotions through, it hits you because it wasn't there before, it's a switch between the usual voice and the emotive one, it gives you whiplash, but why am I talking about this?
Because these characters are able to express their emotions with a lot more power, because they always talk in a really specific way, you get used ti their tone and speech pattern without noticing it, so you maybe not actually understand it, but your brain notices when the pattern breaks, and since it is a really set in stone one, when it gets broken the whiplash is extreme. Just like when Niki rebelled against Schlatt, the whiplash was her raising her voice and abandoning the soft tone she always used, but kept the classic amount of emotions in her voice, the same thing happens with Techno and his speech: some emotions start to get throught, he doesn't get to the point quickly as always, instead he keeps on talking with extreme confidence in every word, the same confidence he always has. Whiplash guys, whiplash.
I didn't mention Quackity as one of the set-in-stone-speaking characters, because he switches too much to set the rules enough to shock when broken. I'm not saying at all that he isn't a good actor, on the contrary, his acting just works on different bases, example, Try looking at the Quackity vs Schlatt argument compared to the Tubbo vs Tommy: when Quackity got angry it wasn't expected, it was a bit alienating, it didn't feel like the Quackity we know because it was incredibly different than how his character speaks, too different (Which still isn't bad, at all, that scene was phenomenal); when Tubbo got angry it still felt like Tubbo, you could still pinpoint it was Tubbo even without hearing his voice, because even if the voice is raised, the amount of emotions is the same and the speech pattern is the same, just to the next level. So yeah.
I don't even feel like talking about Techno's lines tho, these are amazing under every technical point of view and you guys know that, so let's go to Wilbur.
Wilbur, Wilbur, Wilbur, where can I begin with Wilbur? Not only he had an extraordinary arc for his own character, he also wrote an incredible story- this guy's voice acting is off the charts in every way possible, are you telling me he didn't take acting classes as a kid? i do not believe you. Like, at all. He has a perfect hang on his voice, but this could be because he's also a singer: expressing emotions during songs is harder than you think, because you cannot let emotions ruin your exibition by making your voice crack at the wrong part or making you mess up the timing, but you also need to let them shine through or the voice will seem flat and Wil knows that perfectly, just listen to Your City gave me asthma and you'll understand what I'm going on about here.
Wilbur Soot is a showman. He manovrated the stage to shine a spotlight on himself, making us see what he wants us to see: that's why it took us so much to realize that the character didn't just "go insane" out of nowhere, the seeds were always there, we had all the hints we needed, but he was able to move his character around it, around the arc, in such a way that made us overlook all of those details until they slapped us in the face. He showed us the consequences of his character through other characters, he acted and spoke in a certain way to get a reaction from the others, and the others reacted in the exact way Wilbur planned. And those things aren't scrpited, only major plotpoints are. Wheter this was intentional on his part or it was a coincidence it's not clear, but in either cases it's still pure skill and genius.
Wilbur knew how to act and interact with every character, it's impressive
He even knew how to get Dream on his act on the festival narrative, Dream isn't always top notch at improv and we know that, but if he can get in the loop he is absolutely a distructive force, it's terrifying, and Wilbur knew exactly what to do to get Dream inside the loop of events and it's incredible.
You could guess he knew how to act with Tommy, Tubbo, Ph1lza, Techno and Schlatt, of course he did, he already knew them, but right now he has an incredibly difficoult bit with someone I would have never guessed if I didn't watch the SMP, with Fundy. I have not been in the fandom for a lot of time, but it seems like the two actually met each other on the SMP. They are carrying and incredibly emotional taxing bit with each other, and the SMP lore started just this year- more or less 7/8 months I think? Correct me if I'm wrong. The story bit these two are on is a delicate one, one wrong step and the situation explodes. The fact that they are capable to carrying it even without having known each other for a long time is honestly impressive. Things like this are incredibly hard even when scripted, in improv usually only people who blindly trusted each other for a long time are able to carry it, meanwhile Wilbur and Fundy are flawlessly running with this story arc, the character interactions are perfect, ever act, every word is so incredibly in character for both of them, in scenes like this having to keep perfect track of your character is hard, you have to concentrate on the scene, you cannot stop to think about it, you have only one take and you cannot afford to slow down the act or you risk losing the atmosphere and the momentum of it, and if you do that you'e screwed, you lost an entire scene. In improv you cannot afford slipping up, but if you actually do you have to be incredibly quick to catch yourself, lose two seconds too many and the moment is broken.
Wilbur Soot is incredibly quick to adapt his acting to ever change in his character, having to jump from the power hungry, driven crazy, obsessive, unhinged, paranoid character that is Wilbur to the sad, guilty, scared, repressed, just-wanting-to-be-happy, forgetfull, ignoring character that is Ghostbur is not something easy. Like, at all. It's a cspital switch, and he did it from a day to the other like it's nothing.
Mr Soot please leave some talent to the rest of us come on-

My thoughts on Dr. Stone’s S02E03 (“Call from the Dead”)
My thoughts after watching Season Two, Episode Three:
01. Taiju and Yuzuriha have different types of shoes – that’s a nice detail 😊
02. Leave it to Yuzuriha the arts and crafts club member to notice a detail like the dirt around the grave being different!
03. Day after day… I wasn’t expecting them to visit the grave THAT often. I like that they used the same phrase (“mainichi mainichi”) as last time – in Season One, Senku used it to describe Kohaku’s dedication to her sister, and now in Season Two, Nikki used it to describe Taiju and Yuzuriha’s dedication to their friend 😊
04. I liked Kohaku and Ginro’s excitement at hearing Taiju’s voice. This is the first time they’ve heard an outsider who they knew right away wasn’t an enemy! (Well, second time for Kohaku, since Senku saved her the day they met.)
05. The next time I’m on the phone with somebody, I’m going to imagine the same huge arc of electricity that Kaseki did 😁
06. Senku was so emotional – eyes shining with tears, smiling as he listened to Taiju – and then it all went away because he had to remind his friend that HE was Senku 😆
07. Just like how Gen is the stand in for the audience (modern timers, but generally clueless compared to Senku), Kokuyou and Ruri are the stand-ins for how incredible the phone must seem to Ishigami Village 😁 Come to think of it, Kokuyou’s had that role since last season – he’s far away enough from the main cast that he doesn’t know all of their adventures (and that distance makes him like the “normal” villagers), but close enough that he gets to share his thoughts and theories. It was through his eyes that we saw the big impacts that bottling and furnaces had on Ishigami Village 😊
08. I know it was short, but I like how Senku greeted Yuzuriha separately. They haven’t had that much screentime together since the anime began, but I like how Senku and Yuzuriha have their own friendship, instead of Taiju being their go-between or something like that.
09. “He’s been screaming all day.” All day? Have they been there longer than just the few minutes we’ve seen?
10. Kohaku noticed the defensive reason for why they had to speed things up! 😊 And I liked her observation about Senku and Taiju 😊
11. It’s could be easy to just write Taiju off as a loud blockhead, but it’s scenes like his allowing Tsukasa to hit him in Season One and his question about bloodshed in Season Two that really show you the kind of admirable, pacifistic guy he is 😊
12. “Gen will be back tomorrow or so.” Okay, so we have an estimate of how far the two kingdoms/empires are from each other. I’m glad they mentioned this!
13. Magma and Chrome’s loud conversation really shows how much anime can improve upon manga. When you’re just reading, you do know characters are talking and being loud, but when you’re watching anime, it drives home the fact that they’re being SO LOUD and that they need to SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP! Poor Gen… 😆
14. Thank you for finally saying Ukyo’s name, Gen 😆 Anime only folks get important information, and manga readers can sigh in relief that another character’s name has been revealed 😁
15. I’m with Magma. Chrome’s so selfish, worrying about his own life like that! 😡 Not like Magma, who’s strong and noble and self-sacrificing and only thinks of others and their safety 😁
16. You have to feel sorry for Gen… he’s trying to get the two of them to just SHUT UP 😆
17. I doubt Magma was seriously thinking that Chrome would go along with that plan, so he must have been joking… and the fact that we have Magma JOKING around with main characters after being the main antagonist in the middle part of Season One… they’re really pals now, aren’t they? 😲😊
18. Chrome’s battery has 15V… how much is that compared to an AAA battery for a remote control? I'll look it up later 😁
19. I’m a modern era person and it would have never occurred to me to use a wire to connect two ends of a battery and throw it into the grass to start a fire. Either Senku told him that battery stuff fairly recently and it was stuck Chrome’s mind because he was in charge of the heating team, or he’s just that much of a genius that nobody explained that to him but he intuited it anyway… or I’m just that stupid 😆
20. It’s expected that Chrome would sacrifice himself, but Magma… very impressive character development 😁 (I mean, I’m a manga reader, so I knew this was going to happen, but still 😁)
21. Gen’s eyes are blue? I never noticed until this episode.
22. Poor Gen… first, in Season One, he had to run like the wind from the shed of science to the Cave of Miracles while he was SEVERELY injured, and he had to do it as fast as possible to help Senku stay safe, and he was the only one who could do it… and now, he has to run like the wind while dealing with the knowledge and guilt that two of his comrades sacrificed himself for him, and he has to do it as fast as possible to be able to start his extremely important deception mission, and he’s the only one who can do it.
23. Gen really needs to get Kaseki to build him some kind of cable car system or a limousine so that he can travel in style between the two kingdoms/empires instead of exhausting himself all the time running back and forth 😲 Or at least a bicycle!
24. Since it’ll take Gen at least one day, possibly longer, to reach the shed of science, that means that Taiju and Yuzuriha must have talked to Nikki one or more days after they spoke with Senku. Anime helps with some things (like sound), but it can sure confuse people about the passage of time…
25. Copper swirly! 😊 I like Kaseki’s name for it better than Senku’s name for it 😆
26. Kohaku’s eyes! She’s SO fascinated by how the copper swirly is being used 😁
27. Nikki’s SO hostile 😲 I get that she’s a guard and everything, but she doesn’t really have a reason to be this hostile to Taiju and Yuzuriha, does she? It’s weird O.o Unless maybe she wanted to do something else (hunting/training/etc.) but she was forced to be their guard specifically because she’s a woman and can stick to Taiju AND Yuzuriha like glue? (Like Brienne from Game of Thrones.)
28. Why are her eyebrows a darker shade than her hair? This is sort of like Kokuyou’s weird hair colors, but to a lesser extent.
29. The punches are… she’s really hostile. Maybe it’s just to emphasize how much she changes later on and the episode, but it’s still so weird.
30. Didn’t Senku “die” on a cliff, out in the open? Kohaku was able to see him from (presumably) far away, and all that stuff with the gunpowder and the huge rock… am I remembering it wrong? Was it NOT a cliff after all? Because the rocks around this grave make it look like some kind of natural, concealed fortress!
31. Senku’s Sebastian voice sounds so silly 😆
32. I wish they had done Lilian’s voice differently. Gen’s fake Lilian doesn’t sound like a native English speaker while speaking English. Maybe they’re counting on the people they’re talking to not knowing the difference between foreign language accents… but still, this could have been done better. Maybe the studio just didn’t want to hire a new person to speak just a few lines. Or maybe they did this on purpose so that Nikki could notice something was off with her voice?
33. Yuzuriha being quick on the uptake again! 😁
34. This has to be the most stressful, rushed, and mathematical estimating of CD sales and body measurements ever 😆
35. The video game music was used in such a fun, light way last season (choosing the third mining team member) that hearing it in this scene for this situation sounds so weird
36. That crouching backwards, pointing straight ahead Lilian pose seemed really out of place when the music is this really soft, gentle song 😲
37. I wonder if the stadium they showed us is based on a real stadium in Japan?
38. “Lilian doesn’t exist in this world anymore. Am I right?” Oh, Nikki… 😭
39. Senku’s eyes were shining when he replied to Nikki… I wonder if talking about Lilian reminded him of Byakuya… somebody who was in space with Lilian and also doesn’t exist in this world anymore… 😭
40. I love how Senku doesn’t lose anything or inconvenience himself at ALL by making that promise, since he’s going to protect the glass recording anyway because of Byakuya 😆
41. Okay, after Nikki committed to the plan (welcome, Nikki!), they zoomed out and the grave is seriously surrounded by all those vertical rocks. There is NO WAY this grave is in the same place Senku and Tsukasa last talked. No WAY.
42. I was SO surprised when the episode ended there 😲 That was NOT what I was expecting. This episode felt so short!
43. I still love this ending theme! 😁
44. About the ending theme (“Koe” / “Voice” by Hatena), songs mean a lot more to me when I understand what the lyrics mean, so I went to YouTube hoping to find an English cover or English subtitles or something. I found this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scv09Dtby-8) by a YouTube channel called AniComet Music, and from 0:12 to 0:34, the lyrics are, “I keep struggling and suffering, but still / I’ll gain strength from the feelings I’ve had for you / It’s a story that will never change / Even though I knew I’d never be a match for him.”
45. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel the song is from Senku’s point-of-view, and both the second and fourth lines could be about Byakuya (especially the fourth line) – in a father/son context, of course – of how he gets strength and inspiration from Byakuya and how he feels his father will always be beyond him and more than him 😭
46. With that said, even though my interpretation is really meaningful to me, it doesn’t really make sense, since “you” and “him” are obviously different people, and when you read more of the lyrics, “you” can’t really be referring to Byakuya. Maybe my interpretation will change when I listen to the song more and read more translations, but this is the first English translation of the ending song that I’ve read, and it really speaks to me 😊

So there’s this “101 Reasons to Ship Snowbarry” video that keeps coming up on my YouTube suggestions. Idgaf about Snowbarry, and I’ve already hit the “not interested” button on similar videos before, but since I can’t seem to get away from video suggestions like this, I’m just gonna watch it and liveblog it, and bet that for every entry on the list, I can come up with a corresponding rebuttal for why Barrisco would make an even better couple. (I’m not gonna comment this ON the video ofc, this is just for my own amusement.)
Click the link above if you want to see the stuff I’ll be responding to, but be forewarned, that video is like, way long, so naturally it follows that this post is gonna be, too.
Additional note: If you are a Snowbarry shipper who has stumbled across this post somehow, now would be the time to stop reading, and also to add the “anti Snowbarry” tag to your filters if you wish to avoid running into posts like this in the future, ‘cause I ain’t interested in engaging in shipping wars.
Anyways, let’s go:
1. "How they met." Cisco woke Barry out of a coma by playing/singing a song about bisexuality, 'nuff said. (Also, part of the purpose of that scene was to introduce Caitlin as the serious, “down to business” one, and Cisco as the warmer, more easygoing one who’s trying to make Barry feel more comfortable.)
2. "They're both scientists." What is Cisco, an Instagram influencer?
3. If Caitlin being Barry’s personal doctor gets her romantic points, then the same should go for Cisco being his personal tailor. Actually, he should get more points, because there’s no moratorium on romantic relationships between tailors and their clients.
4. The way Barry and Cisco gaze into each other's eyes for non-medical purposes. This is too easy.
5. Uh. Cisco being the voice in Barry's ear while he's running, and often the first person he calls out to for help solving a problem.
6. They frequently take hold of each other's hands and shoulders.
7. Cisco comforts Barry while Caitlin tends to his wounds.
8 through 12 is literally just stuff about Caitlin being a doctor, and I don't find this stuff relevant enough to rebut because there's nothing inherently romantic about any of it.
13. "They both have fun together." Yes, Cisco also, the fun having, it happens, lots. Even more, actually.
14. Not really sure what to say for this one. Barry and Cisco noticing when each other is sad and then checking on each other (at Cecile’s baby shower and Barry’s bachelor party, respectively, and also on other occasions), comes to mind. That doesn’t have to do with noticing each other’s lips, per se, but I’ve never thought of either of these SB scenes as moments where Barry was staring at Caitlin’s lips, just as moments where he’s noticing her expression/overall mood, which is something he does with Cisco (and vice versa), too.
15. They all have nerdy hobbies, dude, they're nerds.
16. This one for SB is "she makes Barry drunk on purpose", which, y'know, she did because he wanted to be able to get buzzed, which Cisco has succeeded in helping him do, too (and the drink he made was more effective and longer lasting), but the way this is phrased is kind of suggestive, like Caitlin was doing it to lower his inhibitions (which she totally wasn’t), and uuuuhhhh, don't romanticize that maybe???
17. Cisco put all that tech into Barry's suit, including delivery menus from his favorite restaurants + wrote him an instruction manual, and sped up all his favorite shows so he could catch up on what he missed while he was in the speed force.
18. Barry makes Cisco's (and everyone's) hair fly everywhere when he speeds out of a room, too. Like, this is just basic physics, fam, wyd?
19. Barry also uses his powers to help Cisco. And...literally everyone who needs his help, this is basic superhero stuff, wyd?
20. He is impressed with Cisco, frequently.
21. Just having nicknames? He calls him "bud", "dude", etc., and one time he called him "Cis". (Bonus: Iris and Cisco have called Caitlin "Cait", too, so it’s not just a Ronnie and Barry thing.)
22. Cisco can make anything to help Barry. They're literally top-notch genius scientists, I don't even
23. Obviously they think each other makes great company, they're best friends. All of them.
24. They comfort each other. Again, best friends + Team Flash pep talks are a major staple of the show.
25. He needs Cisco, too.
26. They...they care about...my god, it's like you people have never heard of FRIENDS.
27. Honestly, how many times have we heard Barry tell Cisco he believes in him, or heard Cisco gush about what a great hero Barry is?
28. Helping each other conquer their fears. Yep, that's another one that applies to like, everyone on this show.
29. "They both have experienced loss" IT'S A SUPERHERO SHOW! Also, that's just life. Name one main character on this show who hasn't experienced loss. Nash and Wally have both experienced loss, and I have yet to see anyone ship them.
30. "They both can sing really well." Okay now. This one is true for Barry and Cisco, but uh...Caitlin is literally tone deaf. I'm not being mean, Danielle Panabaker knows good and well that she can't sing, and she has talked about Carlos side-eyeing her when she gets going because she's not good at it. THAT'S OKAY! There's nothing wrong with not being able to sing, but--WHY would you claim that she's good at something that she clearly is not? She wasn't on pitch for a single line of Summer Nights, and she straight up changes keys mid-line in the mockingbird song in that other clip, and just...what even is this entry?!
31. Watching over each other, yeah, another basic staple of being friends and superheroes.
32. "He is always standing behind Caitlin" AND LOOK WHO'S STANDING BESIDE HIM!
33. Remember that time fake Jay "died" and Cisco stayed with Caitlin until she fell asleep? Remember when Dante died and Caitlin slept on Cisco's couch to keep him company? Remember all those times Barry or Cisco were rendered unconscious, and the other stayed by their bedside until they woke up?
34. Basically just a continuation of 33. See above.
35. "Maybe 'okay' will be our 'always'." Hmm, what WOULD Barry and Cisco's "always/okay" be? Probably just calling out each other's names tbh, they do that a lot. Or perhaps, "For real?"
36. Is2g. Being only one call or text away is, again, a staple of the show, considering everyone in it is a close-knit found family and knows there's a very good chance that that call or text might be saying, "I'm in mortal danger, please come save my life at once."
37. Funny, I already pointed out once before (in a different post) the fun parallel of how Caitlin will sometimes go running to whoever her love interest is at the moment, or she'll call out his name, while Cisco is at the same moment running to Barry/calling out for Barry.
Side note: did they really think including Barry's proposal song to Iris would give more weight to their why-to-ship-Snowbarry argument?
38. I mean...Barry kind of carries everyone everywhere. You don't really get to see it, but how the heck else do you explain all the times he whooshes people in and out of places? He can't just drag them, otherwise the soles of their shoes would either wear down fast or catch on fire.
39. Okay, no shade to Barry and Caitlin's friendship, and some of these moments are really great, but generally speaking, their hugs do not compare to the ones that either of them has with Cisco. Also, note the group hug scene, conveniently cut off before Cisco joins in, because unlike the Romione + Harry hug in the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, there's no way to interpret it as a third wheel/cockblocking moment, because the moment Cisco declares it a group hug moment, Barry and Caitlin both agree, and you can see it on their faces that they are delighted, and think that Cisco joining in their hug has just made it even BETTER.
40. Henry gladly accepts a hug from Caitlin, immediately after laughing at Cisco's awkward moment and giving him a fatherly reassuring pat on the shoulder. I think it's safe to say he approves of all of Team Flash.
41. Oh look, another thing Barry and Cisco and multiple other characters do.
Good god, I'm not even halfway through this yet. This is like that time I tried to climb Diamond Head.
42. Ah, superhero poses, yes. That thing that...superheroes...do. Like, all of the ones on this show. And in general.
43.  "They begin to resemble each other." They're just white, fam. OH MY GOD, I SOMETIMES TAKE MY SUNGLASSES OFF WITH ONE HAND, TOO! OT3 MUCH????? 😱 Lol what even??
44. How many times throughout this video am I gonna have to repeat that everyone on this show has these moments? Also, speaking in unison with someone because you had prior knowledge of what they were going to say due to yourself or someone else time traveling, is not the same as being in sync with them because you’re close. (He said “Weather Wizard” at the same time as Cisco, too.)
45. Idk what to even say to this one. Like, Iris is obviously the love of Barry's life, and Cisco is obviously his favorite best friend and the person he would be with if he didn’t have Iris.
46. *John Mulaney voice* AND THEN THEY DIDN'T! Seriously, though, both of the people they were trying to get over were perfect for them. I don't have a Barrisco specific rebuttal for this one though.
47. So by this video's logic, that one scene from 4x03 means that Barry, Harry, and Cisco should be a threesome, huh?
48. "I did it because it gave me an excuse to bring him back."
49. .................is this even an argument?
50. They're both good looking people, darling.
51. Wrong, sir. They fight like siblings. Trust me on this one, I have six of them.
52. Trauma response. I'm moving away from Barrisco arguments and just saying the first thing that pops into my head now. But seriously, this is a normal reaction to trauma/loss.
53. *Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh* I'm not even gonna say it this time, you already know.
54. Again, have you people ever had anyone in your life that you cared about, ever? I'm starting to get concerned, honestly. But for the sake of bringing Barrisco back into this, hey, remember that time Barry and Caitlin both got kidnapped on the same night and Cisco was completely beside himself?
55. This is getting out of hand.
56. Pretty sure dating Caitlin didn't even make the list for Barry's reasons to dislike Jay and Julian (also, he liked Ronnie, the guy she loved the most, so...)
57. Judging Barry for being a dumbass + helping an exposed girl out =/= jealousy. Granted, there was some jealousy in that last clip, but not because Iris got the man; it was because Barry was all set to live happily ever after while Caitlin was, y'know, struggling with powers she didn't want and another person living in her head that kept fighting her for control of her body.
58. Refer to season 1 episode 2, wherein Cisco is the person helping Barry from the beginning, and Caitlin asserts that she is on Joe's side when he tells Barry what a stupid and reckless idea trying to be a superhero is.
59 + 60. "Let's bring our boy home." / "Let's go get our girl." Do I need to cite either quote?
61. Again I ask, did a human make this list?
62. Don't make me tap the sign.
63. One word: Elseworlds.
64. If you'll scroll waaaaaaaaaaay up there, I already covered that Barry and Cisco hold hands A LOT.
65. Oooh, I made a meme about this one! Not after watching this video, I just see SBers say this all the time, and it drives me crazy.
Tumblr media
I used this in my Snowbarry fandom drama presentation for my squad’s presentation party a while back.
Side note: ~INTERESTING~ how Caitlin being a doctor is ““romantic”” when she’s treating Barry but ““motherly”” when she’s treating Cisco. I can’t even.
66. ......I’m sorry, I’m just not seeing how the dramatic irony of them stating that Killer Frost will never be a problem on Earth-1 is pertinent to shipping them as a couple.
67. Hannibal Bates and Caitlin are perfect for each other? Weird take, but okay. Oh, and there Caitlin is trying to freeze Barry to death. Wasn’t there a point somewhere up there about her never wanting him to get hurt?
Side note: Hey, what’s the name of that guy who saved Barry in this scene?
68. Bruh, that’s just her dynamic with everyone that season.
69. Barry and Iris, Barry and Cisco, Cisco and Caitlin, Cisco and Harry, Caitlin and Killer Frost, Cisco and Killer Frost--just naming some duos that are more iconic than Barry and Caitlin. Again, no shade to their friendship--I really like them as friends!--but the shippers stay making it out to be more than it really is.
I also just have to point out that although Killer Frost was the one who willingly teamed up with Savitar/whom Savitar sought out first, when she comments on their team up and says it’s “Barry and Caitlin together again”, his response is to point out that she’s not Caitlin and he’s not Barry. In contrast, when he takes Cisco against his will and forces him to modify the speed force bazooka, he still refers to Cisco as his best friend.
70. Make up your mind, does Savitar count as Barry in this or not? Because he totally grabbed Caitlin by the throat once.
71. I don’t know how to break this to you, but not enjoying it when someone is in pain is just being normal. (Do I even need to point out Cisco’s empathetic cringing compared to Barry’s looks of mild discomfort, or...?)
At some point this went from being about Barrisco to being about Cisco being the favorite friend to both of them, idk.
72. He. Is. Literally. A. Superhero.
73. Man, what did I JUST say? Also, can we just acknowledge the build up to Crisis on Infinite Earths for a second, wherein Frost very quickly accepts that Barry is supposed to die in order to save everyone else, while Cisco has infinite crises of his own at the idea of having to accept Barry’s death--which, I might add, he never actually does? Neither does Iris, for that matter. They tried to accept it, and they thought they did, but they didn’t really.
74. Oh fuck it, just read 73 again.
75. Okay, what even is this one? Two scenes where they are not present for each other’s “deaths” and thus don’t react to them, meanwhile Cisco is devastated in both of them?
76. Same thing I’ve already said several times before.
77. How many times do I gotta point out that this is a superhero show?
78. Just really trying hard to find enough reasons to make this list 101, huh? (What is Firestorm, chopped liver?)
79. Because violence = chemistry apparently. Wasn’t there another entry about how they can never hurt each other or something?
80. I’m sorry, I can’t hear you over the vibrating hand that shredded Cisco’s heart before either of those scenes happened.
81. It’s like SBers think they’re the only two characters on the entire show.
82. I’m sorry, I can’t hear you over all the other vibrating hands triggering Cisco at least once per season. But sure, Barry and Caitlin are the only two who know suffering.
83. Two words: Flashpoint. Dante. Also, not seeing how this one is romantic.
84. That’s just a Caitlin/Frost thing, fam, it only happened to Barry because he got whammied by Prism, who caused the same effect in everyone else he whammied. (Cisco’s eyes turned purple once when he got hypnotized.)
85. Please. I beg of you. Get friends. Interact with a human person.
Side note: “I trust you” was almost what I put for Barrisco’s “always/okay”.
86. “Don’t call me that. I don’t know you, string bean.” / “I don’t know who you think you are, but around here, people call me Mr. Ramon.” / “The name is Vibe.” (Again, romance where?)
87. Kinda like how Mirror Iris and Mirror Kamilla have slightly dressier tastes than Real Iris and Real Kamilla.
88. ....Anyways, Vibe........
89. The first time because Cisco saved him, the second time because she froze him just enough to fool Grodd, not enough to actually kill him. (Again I say, what is Firestorm?)
90. So romance. Very love. Much relationship.
91. ANYWAYS, CISCO. (And uh, hello, IRIS???? Joe? Harry?)
92. See 88.
93. This one might be a fun ship parallel if Caitlin had actually been involved in Barry’s brain zapping, but instead it’s just like, “here’s two random scenes that are kinda similar in completely insignificant ways”, like the evil clothes thing a few entries back.
94. Another entry that just demonstrates that their one-on-one moments together, while good, just don’t compare to either of their one-on-one moments with Cisco. I can’t be the only person who sees this.
95 + 96 + 97. I can’t muster up enough interest in any of these shows to watch them all the way through. Is this supposed to impress me?
98 + 99 + 100. The only point this proves is that they have multiple ship names. (I thought their evil ship name was Savifrost?)
101. Mm, sorry, sweetheart, Westallen, Barrisco, and Snowstorm all have them beat in this category.
This post really got away from me, at this point idk what I’m even doing, but I went on too long to stop now.
Oh, shit, there’s a bonus round.
Honestly, I fail to see how a lot of these supposedly “match”? But as for the ones that do, that’s just your basic TV aesthetics, I forget the official name for it. They’re matchy-matchy with Cisco in some of those shots, too, because TV matchy color psychology whatever. It’s a whole thing, every TV show and movie does it.
If anyone actually followed along this far, congratulations on your attention span, my brain could never. Idk how to end this post because it strayed so far from my original intent and basically just turned into a Snowbarry Fandom Doesn’t Make Sense Presentation 2.0
You know, I like to try not to generalize and stuff, and I’d like to think that maybe not all SBers are racist and that some people genuinely just like the ship because they think that makes sense or something, but then I look at their reasons for shipping it, and it’s just the dang blandest thing I ever did see, and they have to reach so far when they try to explain why they think they’re the best “couple” on the show and just??? I am the queen of shipping friends who never get together romantically, but Barry and Caitlin just don’t got it, son. Tbh part of the show’s appeal to me is the fact that there’s no threat of Caitlin ever getting with either of her male bffs in that way, because Cisco is like her brother, and getting with Barry just wouldn’t make sense. It just befuddles me to no end that they are such a wildly popular ship and not a rare pair, because the way their relationship is in canon is just exactly the way it should be.
That’s it, I guess. I’ve already invested this much time in this, so I might as well post it.
Also, please don’t anybody try to start anything in the comments section of this video, this fandom has enough drama as it is.

Title: Mightier Than the Sword
Fandom: Witcher
Summary: A month after the events of "Rare Species," Geralt slinks his way into an inn and is faced with the question of how an emotionless man apologies. (TV!canon with some details drawn from the books and Wild Hunt.)
Pairing: Pre-slash Geralt and Jaskier
Word Count: 2,568
Where to read it: Below or on AO3
A/N: It’s a Christmas miracle! Look at me making an attempt at writing. I figured that if season one was going to leave us in that horrible place with Jaskier and Geralt’s relationship I’d just have to start fixing it myself 👍
The storm had raged for two days and looked as if it had enough life in it for a third. When Geralt shouldered his way into the inn he felt like there was a kikimore on the other side, so strong was the wind keeping slabs attached to frame. When he finally managed and let the door slam shut behind him, catching his heel and dimming the storm’s voice, he found a number of glares leveled his way, the patrons none too pleased at the cold interruption. Dropping his hood did not improve matters.
One man splendid in rotting clothes and stained teeth spat as soon as he saw Geralt’s hair. Another flinched away from his eyes. Still another pretended to keep attention on his food but Geralt caught the inquisitive looks he snuck, far worse than any hatred. The curious only thought they were kinder.
“Witcher,” said a fourth. That tone spread through the room. Apparently Jaskier’s ballads hadn’t reached this corner of the world yet.
Geralt found his seat and kept his back to the wall.
For all the poverty he’d passed through in this town the inn at least was holding its own. The horse hair plaster did little to warm the space, but the many bodies and roaring fire made up for the lack of insulation. The room was otherwise dark. Comforted in the soft chatter and the simple blessing that, though they might growl, no one was inclined to approach him. Geralt took a moment to merely sit, listening to the drip of water from his cloak and the clink of spoons against bowls. The latter made his stomach ache something fierce and with a sigh Geralt stood, approaching the bar.
The innkeep took one look at his threadbare clothes and went back to cleaning his nails. Geralt slid what little coin he had across the counter.
“Oats,” he said. “For the chestnut mare outside.”
“This look like a ploughing stable to you?”
“Does this metal look fake to you?”
Geralt spoke of the coin. Might have meant his sword. Either understanding worked just fine. The innkeep pocketed his meager offering in a flash.
“Doesn’t get your bitch much,” he said, but moved to the back regardless, presumably to make up a pail. Geralt traced his movements just long enough for reassurance before heading back to the fire. His knuckles creaked and when he grimaced the skin of his lips split.
As he sat that hole in his stomach grew wider, deeper, pulled him down stronger than gravity herself and Geralt had to plant his feet against the wave of dizziness that hit. Even witchers were susceptible to starvation. Obviously he would have preferred food for both himself and Roach, but work hadn’t been kind to him these last few weeks. Oh, there were plenty of monsters, just few people willing to pay for their demise. As he’d once told Jaskier, the two rarely went hand-in-hand.
...must be the hunger addling his brain. Geralt knew of no other reason why he should think so much on a bard who was no longer bound to him. He’d severed that tie himself, over a month past.
“Endings,” Geralt said. To Roach, really. The conversation had picked up enough to cover his voice and he knew his horse was just beyond the wall, sheltered beneath the hanging roof of the inn. “It was bound to happen eventually. Best to do it on my own terms.”
If pressed Geralt might have admitted to catching that snort. As if Roach had heard, understood, and had more than her fair share to say about that claim. But he held his ground. Jaskier would have left, and all the better for it. Over the last few weeks Geralt had pictured the man lying prone on Yennefer’s bed. Thought over the advice he’d given about heading to the coast. Become antsy during the long stretch of silences and could only admit now that he’d grown used to Jaskier’s singing. The memories of his songs had settled in the back of his mind, rooting there with a determination that fit their author. More than once Geralt had caught himself humming a tune when there was no one else to hear it.
Yes. There were things he... missed. But better to miss them now while they shown bright in his memory. There would have come a day when Jaskier would no longer ask to accompany him to far off places. Where his songs would warn of a witcher’s violence and treachery, rather than simply lying through his teeth. There may have even come a time when he fell and no sorceress, not even one of Yennerfer’s skill, could save him. Geralt knew this as surely as he knew the weight of his own sword.
Jaskeir would have grown to hate him whether he’d held his foolish tongue or not. That was a destiny Geralt could believe in.
He’d just resolved to meditate until the phrase ‘Toss a coin to your witcher’ finally left his head—its repetition had certainly not brought the command into reality—when a plate was dumped in front of him, steaming meat and crispy potatoes. A bit of relish dotted the top, specific to the region as Geralt didn’t recognize the spices. The smell was enough for him to draw a sharp breath though, swallowing it like that might fill the hole in his stomach. He forced himself to look up into the eyes of a plain woman and kept his hands away from the table's edge.
“I didn’t order this,” Geralt said.
The woman smiled. “I know.”
Hmm. “You misunderstand. I don’t have coin to pay for this.” A drink was set beside the plate. The smell of steamed milk had Geralt briefly closing his eyes.
The woman chuckled. At his longing or whatever game she played, he didn’t know. Perhaps both. Though Geralt had an inkling that he had misjudged her when she pushed the plate closer, a chipped nail tapping its edge.
“It’s you who’s not understandin’” she said. “Coin’s already in the pocket. Mine, not my lout of a brother over there.” Her head jerked towards the innkeep. “Pretty bard was in here just a mo’ ago. Went pale as milk when he saw ye. Thought the poor boy was gonna faint! But he recovered, sure as anything, and gave me a handful of silver before slippin’ out the back. Had stern instructions that I get you a hearty dinner so now here I am, doin’ jus’ that. You won’t catch Sinah goin’ back on her word, no sir. So go on. Eat your fill, witcher. More where that came from if you’ve a mind to have it,” and Sinah inched the plate ever closer.
Geralt’s gaze was on the hearth though. He stared at the flames and tried to ignore how the smell of meat had gone sour. “A bard?”
“Aye. As said, a pretty thing. More dolled up than we’re likely to get ‘round these parts. Sang a bit for his own meal before settlin’ in the back. Quiet. Fidgety. Like a mouse before the cat. Specially when he caught sight of that hair o’ yours. Thought he might be a monster himself—one of those dopple things, if you know my meaning—up until he asked me to serve ye. Odd that. I’ll not have my cookin’ go to waste though. I’ll take it back if—hey now!”
But Geralt was already up and on the move because he’d heard it. Muttering something about saving his plate, he was across the room with a dexterity only a witcher could manage, dodging legs, chairs, spilled drinks, all in near darkness. Throwing himself out into the gale that sound grew stronger. No one else would have heard it above the storm, but Geralt followed it like a clear, melodious bell.
Someone was speaking to Roach. Jaskier was speaking to Roach.
A little ways down the path to avoid a small river forming, around the corner of the inn. Geralt slipped into the shadows created by the overhang and blinked at the sudden assault on his vision. Jaskier was dressed entirely in purple and pink, a beacon amid the grays of the night. Geralt’s first thought upon spotting him was that his clothing was a monstrosity all its own and he would happily accept a contract to dispose of it.
Then, ears perking like a wolf’s, Geralt focused on the conversation.
“—hardly deserves it,” Jaskier was saying, using Roach’s neck to hide from a particularly sodden gust of wind. His mare put up with it, long familiar with the man’s proximity. “Though I suppose that you could technically make an argument for reciprocation. If I am owed a ten percent cut of whatever work he secures thanks to my genius ballads, then perhaps I owe him ten percent of whatever I earn thanks to his heroics. Yes, yes. I know I’m not supposed to be touching you, but I’m not see? I’m touching your saddlebags. Geralt can’t get mad about that, can he?”
He could, yet astoundingly Geralt found that he was not. How could he be when the light of the moon showed Jaskier slipping coin into the side pocket where Geralt was sure to find it? Shivering, drenched to the bone, Jaskier continued to give up his riches, smiling all the while. Geralt could see it even from the shadows. Noted the melancholy grip on its edge. He looked away—again—and this time told himself that it was so his shining eyes didn’t give him away. The excuse sounded weak even within his own head.
“Just a bit to tide him over,” Jaskier said, continuing to pour more than “a bit” into various pockets. “And you of course! No need to tell him I was here, but you should make sure he buys you plenty of carrots. You need more than these wet oats... oh by the gods those look disgusting. I’m sorry, girl. I’d sneak back in to get you something as well but... ah.... not sure ‘sneaking’ and ‘White Wolf’ go well together. Our King of Brooding would spot me for sure and then where would I be? Suffering another punch I’d wager. And given our last meeting I don’t think Geralt would settle for aiming at my gut. Sorry, girl, but this face is just too beautiful to risk.”
Another sliver coin glinting from the shadows. An endless wave of prattle just under the rain. Geralt listened as Jaskier told Roach all about his travels over the last month, how audiences were growing weary of the ballads he had, demanding new, exciting tales. Jaskier had nothing to give them. Though that was fine. Grand even! Challenge and limitation, the bread and butter of an artist. He would find a way and until then he’d help others find there’s. Even grumpy witchers.
“I’m his friend, after all,” Jaskier said. It came out quieter than all the rest. “That’s what the foolish man doesn’t realize. Hardly matters whether he’s my friend. Doesn’t stop me from being his. Really, all those mutated brains and he’s dumb as a goat half the time. He’s lucky he’s gorgeous.” Roach tossed her head, knocking into Jaskier’s and drawing a chuckle. “Knew you’d agree with that, girl. There now. All loaded up? Excellent. I’m going to go dry off now. I will not allow this storm to ruin my new outfit,” and he did a little twirl, showing off the decorative stitching. “Stunning? Why yes, I’m quite aware. Never hurts to hear it though. Thank you, darling.”
Jaskier planted a quick kiss on her muzzle, whispered not to tell, and with a wink slipped away. Geralt took note of the house he was renting a room from and then returned to the inn.
He found Sinah in the back removing a man’s hand from her waist. She followed him to his seat, the meat and potatoes now cold. Geralt shoveled forkfuls down regardless.
“You said the bard’s coin would get me more?”
Sinah inclined her head. “Aye. Wanting a second plate, do you?”
“No, but I’ll take paper and quill if you have it.”
If she found the request odd she didn’t show it. Sinah left and returned with the speed of a wraith, depositing pulpy parchment and a vile of ink heavily watered down. It was enough. Geralt inclined his head in turn, the most respectful gesture she’d seen all day, and the two parted with satisfaction on both sides. Geralt put aside a third of his meal for Roach before finishing the rest with a speed that would have choked a human man. Done, he set about composing a list.
He was no poet. Geralt hadn’t the words to describe his contracts with anything other than the blunt language spoken by all witchers. Still, he made an effort to include details. He wrote about the noonwraith he’d dispatched three towns over, only to find that the residents had but an eighth of the coin they’d originally promised. Geralt had looked at their own sunken cheeks, taken half of that eighth, and been on his way. After that had come the drowner colony, but no one cared to pay for what amounted to a pest—even a dangerous one. There were the men who’d succeeded in both putting a hole in his cloak as well as forfeiting their lives. The young woman who looked much like Sinah but had none of her honor, attempting to lure Geralt into a robbery through false tears. The ghoul whose liver he'd eaten when he couldn’t sell it. The curse he’d lifted for a roof over his head. The nekkers that had managed to drain the rest of his energy before he’d finally collapsed here. It was all common work. The witcher equivalent of doing one’s chores. It was only Jaskier’s voice in his head that told Geralt any of this might interest another.
The whole thing filled five pages and took the length of time required to dry his socks. There was no signature. The writing was splotchy and the paper now smelled of rain. Geralt folded it with all the care he’d give to cleaning his sword.
It wasn’t an apology because witchers didn’t do apologies. Geralt wasn’t even sure he’d know how to give one if required... though this was probably as close as he’d get. He would not think on what Jaskier had done to earn the attempt.
Instead, Geralt planned to sop up the remaining juice on his plate and lick his fingers clean. He would return the inkwell to Sinah and, when the rest of him was dry, he’d ruin it all by going back out into the storm, across the weeds, into the room where Jaskier slept with lute and clothes as flamboyant as a peacock. Geralt’s notes would look like a pauper’s trifle next to the rest of his belongings, but perhaps Jaskier could spin them into something grand.
Indeed, perhaps someday soon there would be another inn, a new ballad, and this time Jaskier would choose to stay. Geralt wouldn't deserve that, but he found himself thinking on it nonetheless. Treacherous thoughts that circumvented destiny and warmed him far better than the fire.
Until then, Geralt curled in on himself and let the music he already knew wash over him.

Some Interviewing Thoughts
My friend is working on a book about how to podcast. He sent me these questions about interviewing and since who knows how much of my answers will actually end up on the pages of said book (which I will plug when it is time, I bet it will be great), I figured I’d just post them here, in case they’re useful to anyone.
If you are not familiar with me or my work, I am the host of the NPR interview show Bullseye with Jesse Thorn (I am the Jesse Thorn of it). I also did a podcast called The Turnaround where I interviewed interviewers about interviewing.
Can you tell us something about your process?
I'm usually at least somewhat familiar with the guest's work - that's why we've booked them. Not always, but usually. So I have that advantage going in to the prep process.
I try to take a full day to prepare. If there's a book, I usually read it over the preceding week or so. If there's a movie or a show, I see it when I can. The rest I cram in before the interview. I don't have Lexis-Nexus (maybe I should?) but I go on Google News and search for as many news pieces as I can about the guest. I prefer big profiles and long interviews. I'll start with whatever's in the Guardian or the Times or the New Yorker, or online sources with deep archives like the AV Club. And I read as much as I can. Usually a few dozen things. Depends on the notoriety of the guest. I'll also read a bit about the work - film or book reviews, just to get other people's perspectives on it, see if there's stuff I haven't thought of. And usually at the beginning and end I'll read... wait for it... Wikipedia. Because it's usually better than people's bios, and it helps me remember the rough narrative of their life and work. I'll also try to listen to or watch at least one interview - maybe when I'm driving in to the studio. That just gives me a feeling of what it's like to talk to them, so I'm not surprised.
While I'm prepping, I keep a document open on my computer in a writing app called Q10 that saves a text file automatically to a folder that's synced across my devices. If a thought I want to make sure to ask about occurs to me while I'm reading, I drop it in there. Not usually in question form, mostly just a phrase, like "loves to play mandolin but isn't good at it" or something. Generally I'm looking to move past what other people have asked. When I read a response that my guest-to-be has to someone else's question, I'm thinking, "what does that response make me curious about?" I can figure out how to do the exposition to get there. And I'm often thinking in a way improvisers call A-to-C. There is a piece of information, I think "what does this make me think of," then I think "what does *that* make me think of?" It helps avoid obviousness. It's important to know how other people ask someone something, so you can ask something different or at least ask in a different way. Because generally you don't want someone's patter, you want a fresh, in-the-moment thought or reaction.
While I'm doing this, if I find media I want to incorporate or ask about, I send it to my producer, who's pulling clips. They'll give me a list of clips, including the ones I specifically wanted, before the interview, and I'll give that a look-over so I can remember roughly what I've got.
In the end, I have maybe a list of six or eight things I want to try and remember to ask about, a list of six or eight clips, and a lot of information in my head about who the person is. Once in a while, I'll have a question written, but generally only because it's something sensitive and I want to say it exactly correctly. Like a question about a crime someone was accused of or a time someone's colleague was harassed or a time someone said something particularly shitty. Those I don't want to be phrasing on the fly. Generally, though, it's just a few phrases so I don't forget to ask about a funny thing I thought of. I just interviewed the soprano Renee Fleming, and the list had "singer breaking wine glass: is that real" on it.
In general, I'm trying to think about a general outline for the interview - like "we'll talk a bit about the new thing first, then circle back to childhood, then through the biography" or whatever. And I'm trying to be curious and think about why they make the choices they do and what I find myself wondering about. Besides that, I want to know enough about the person I'm talking to that I can just focus on conversing with them.
What things do you think are most important or key to your ability as an interviewer?
I like and respect the people I interview. If they seem like an asshole, I don't invite them on my show. They're generally pretty brilliant, or they wouldn't be able to make the great art they make. So my job is to just meet them where they are and talk to them like a person. I probably show a bit more of myself than most folks at NPR do, who are more news-oriented or reporter-oriented, but my interest in the person sitting across from me is sincere. If I share something of myself, it's because I think it might be meaningful to them and help them understand that we are both people, and we're having a chat.
I also don't try to hide my interest behind posturing faux-impartiality. They're there at my invitation, I'd be a real heel if I'd invited them but wasn't interested in what they were saying. I listen when they talk, and react to what they say. I don't try to control the conversation except to the extent I need to do so to make a radio show. I goof around in goofy parts and respond in a humane way in emotional parts. And in general, I know that it can't go that wrong, so I don't really give a fuck. You only get one ticket, might as well enjoy the ride, as Devin the Dude raps.
What do you do to put people at ease or when you sense that they're' holding back? Is there a time you remember when that happened?
I try to put them at ease when I meet them, before I even sit down at the mic. Or before we start if they're in another studio. That really is just basic human stuff. I come out of my office, go over to them, say hi, I'm Jesse. Shake their hand, smile. Let them know we're gonna talk for an hour or so, it'll just be talking, we'll make them sound great. For most guests if there's something that might be sensitive, I'll let them know it isn't live and if there's something personal they don't want to talk about, to just let me know. (That never actually happens.) Maybe I ask them something about their outfit or something I wondered that wasn't really for the air, like about a sports team I heard they like or something. Just talk to them like a nice person would.
If the interview is rolling and they're holding back, I maybe ask them something friendly and surprising, something that makes me look dumb, maybe something silly. If they're really polished but not revealing themselves, I might ask them a question that requires a heartfelt answer - like I dunno... "are you afraid of death?" Mostly though I just know that I have some time and that if I talk to them in a nice human way they'll usually come around to responding in kind.
What do you keep top of mind when interviewing?
The person sitting in front of me. The actual conversation happening at that actual moment.
Could you describe how you go about preparing for an interview, and approx how long that process takes?
I went through it pretty well above, but as far as time goes - outside of consuming the media the person is there to talk about, their book or film or whatever, I'd say I try to give it at least six straight hours. And I'm very fast at it, since I've been doing it now for twenty years. Before it was maybe eight or twelve. But again: that's in the context of most of my guests already being very familiar to me.
Was there a time when something totally unexpected happened during an interview? What did you do in response? How did things turn out?
I once played a clip for Michael K. Williams of a dance track from the 80s, this song where he'd appeared in the video. It was his big break. And I thought maybe he'd be happy to hear it, kind of amused, but he started crying. And he was in a studio in New York, I couldn't really tell if he was sad or hurt or happy or whatever. But I just let him do his thing. Because I didn't need to control the moment. I have him some time, and he shared some incredible memories.
Are there some people you look up to as interviewers? What did you learn from them?
I think Ira Glass is always very deeply interested in other people's feelings. It is absolutely sincere, and he just asks about them. On more than one occasion, I have had him ask me about my feelings when I was interviewing him. He obviously doesn't do the same kind of interviewing I do - he is really looking for a few illustrative or moving highlights - but the way he does that is very inspirational to me.
Terry Gross is extraordinarily modest. She is a brilliant genius, but she is always glad to highlight the guest and what is great or interesting about them. She also always asks for examples, always brings the conversation to specifics and stories when it could be vague.
I did a series called The Turnaround, where I interviewed interviewers about interviewing, and talked to all kinds of famous interviewers, from a variety of media.
Susan Orlean, who writes for the New Yorker, can find a story anywhere. She just shows up and is extraordinarily curious and recognizes when something is interesting and pulls the thread. That's another improv technique - a scene is built on the first distinctive element. You spot it and you grow it.
Larry King is always hyper-present. He did years and years of long live radio shifts. He absolutely trusts his curiosity. He told me he once asked a pilot if, when the plane took off, he knew it was going to land. He is unafraid of looking like a fool as long as he is following his curiosity.
Reggie Osse, Combat Jack, he knew everything about the subject he was interviewing people about. Everything. So he always had a little anecdote or a little insight that opened things up. His show was loooooong, but that was because he was always relating to something someone said about something in a club in 1998, and that led to this, and all of a sudden you're armpit-deep in amazing stories.
Jerry Springer really respects everyone he talks to, and cares about them and their story. Including folks who other people might laugh at or scorn or pity. He just goes in and tries to give them a chance to be heard.
Elvis Mitchell is a real critic, and he has more expertise in entertainment media than anyone I've ever met. I mean he knows more about his seventh-greatest area of expertise than I do about my first. He's really masterful at talking to artists about the actual content of their work. Themes and ideas. In a clear and concrete way. So many people substitute anecdote for insight, and I am very grateful for his insight.
Marc Maron is like a genius puppy. He just pokes and prods and guesses, and he's so smart and is crackling with such energy that he finds stuff because people step up to meet him. He also is so raw, emotionally, that people just try to take care of him by sharing themselves.
Audie Cornish is astonishingly clear-eyed. She knows what she needs to know, she knows the context, she goes and gets it.
Howard Stern will just ask about anything. And you know he will talk about anything. So you feel obliged to tell him. And he always asks about the biggest and most important stuff. Like how did you lose your virginity or do you believe in God or whatever. He just does it and what are you going to do, not answer?
That's only a few, I could list a million more. I would say that something they share is that they are all actually curious. It is not a performance of curiosity; they want to know about others.
Are there any stories you could share of times when you learned some valuable lessons about interviewing? Do's and don'ts?
I once interviewed Betty Davis, who is a legendary (and legendarily reclusive) funk musician. She was on the phone from Pittsburgh, patched through by her label since she didn't want anyone to have her phone number. And she was very polite, but very fragile-sounding. She hadn't done press in a few decades, and hadn't even picked up her ASCAP checks until a fan tracked her down and hand-delivered them. She gave me a lot of one sentence answers to my questions. It was really, really hard, but I remember thinking of something I'd read in Jessica Abel and Ira Glass' This American Life comic, which is that if you don't say anything, people will fill the space. So when she finished her sentences, I just waited. For a long time, sometimes. Like five or ten seconds, which is FOREVER. And every time, she added to her initial remarks. And that saved the interview.
Another time I went to a fancy hotel in west Los Angeles to interview Bill Withers. He's done some press since then, but at the time he hadn't really done any in like fifteen years. He's older and incredibly smart and a little grumpy. And when I sat down, he kind of started giving me the business. Because whatever - I was a young white guy there being presumptuous enough to bother him, a guy who really had nothing to gain from the interview. And I remember at some point he was giving me a hard time and I kind of poked back at him, and he laughed, and after that it was one of the best interviews I'd ever done. I think just because he was like, "oh, this is a person, too. He's not an idiot, he's here because he cares, and maybe he's even interesting to talk to."
What do you know now that you wish you'd known when you were starting out?
That it's going to be fine. I think I learned that from doing the Turnaround. Because I wasn't going to make money from it, I just figured I'd let myself off the hook preparation-wise and emotionally and so forth. Just let it go. And it was some of my best work. Because I trusted it would be fine, followed my actual curiosity, and talked to everyone like a person. Once my therapist asked me why I was anxious about interviews, and I told him I didn't want to mess it up and look foolish. And he said, "Does that happen?" And I was like... "No. I guess not." And he's like, "So, why be anxious?" And I was like, "CHECKMATE DOCTOR CARR."
If there were one thing you'd like someone who's just starting out to know about interviewing, what would it be?
Be curious. Ask open-ended questions. Remember that whoever you're interviewing, whether it's Buzz Aldrin or Michelle Obama or Little Richard is a person just like you are a person. And enjoy yourself!

Heartwork
I am aghast I almost forgot about NaruSaku day. Not even sure if it’s still going on (on tumblr) but if it is....Happy belated NaruSaku day. Here’s something I put together very quickly that was inspired (ripped off) by a P.G. Wodehouse short story and one or two Macy Gray songs.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Custom dictated that every December the elder monk at the Fire temple and the Hokage of Konohagakure would each display a work of calligraphy that encapsulated their respective thoughts of the previous year. If the year happened to include an incoming Hokage-elect, the villagers would be treated to three works being put on display. The Hokage-elect would be given the privilege of brushing a phrase or a single kanji that encapsulated his or her thoughts for the upcoming year. Though most had forgotten the reasons why this tradition had begun, it was nevertheless held as semi-sacred to those inhabiting the leaf village.
Naruto felt nothing but gratitude as he lifted his ink drenched brush from the rather large and framed sheet of mulberry paper spread against one of the walls of the Hokage residence.
“What do you think of this one?” Naruto beamed.
Manuba Yamanaka gazed upon Naruto’s calligraphy with his face illuminated by a frown.
“I must apologize again that my criticism of your work has to be a little harsh”
“No worries Manuba, I am relying on your expertise.”
Naruto was not too familiar with the man who now cast a critical eye upon his work. Beyond Manuba’s familial ties to Ino, Naruto only knew what he had heard. He’d heard Manuba was an established artist readily accepted by Konohagakure’s bohemian elite. It was said by some that he had his finger on the pulse of the village's artistic vision.
“Your brushstrokes continue to come across lifeless, your words nor your spacing nor your characters truly live on the page.”
“I think it’s lovely.” Sakura said from the back of the room.
The customs of any festivities that involved a Hokage-elect were clearly defined by years of tradition. Every single activity that Naruto participated in that was directly or indirectly related to his future title was a ritual onto itself. Tradition recommended that Naruto complete his artwork in solitude, preferably after hours of quiet meditation and or contemplative prayer. Having a consultant for his art was a questionable act. Visitations from his girlfriend during the ritual was also pushing the envelope. For the sake of custom, compromises had been negotiated. The consultant was allowed two hours of Naruto’s time during the day. Girlfriends, or any other guests could also visit, but they weren’t allowed more than three steps into the entrance of the room where Naruto would be doing his duty. If they wanted to stay for awhile they could sit in a formal sieza position near the entrance of the room.
Manuba puffed his chest out. “Yes, perhaps it is lovely to the eyes of the amateur.”
Sakura was not fond of Manuba Yamanaka. From her seated position she had watched Manuba Yamanaka savage Naruto’s efforts. And he did so without a trace of empathy or leniency. Naruto still inflated with gratitude at being elected Hokage took the beatings with good humor. Sakura’s blood on the other hand had long since boiled.
“At least you both can agree that I wrote something. It’s something you can read. See that’s progress” Naruto grinned.
“Yes but progress isn’t always progress, do you understand?”
Naruto shook his head. “Manuba  I am beginner. You’ll have to dumb it down for me.”
Manuba nodded. “Oh I know, I know. The fact that you are a beginner is readily apparent. That said, your defects are not so much technical as they are emotional. It doesn’t engage the audience, it doesn’t make them feel enough.”
“What do you feel when you look at it?” Naruto inquired.
“I feel bored. I feel common.”
“That’s not enough feelings?”
“The work, it should speak to the hearts and minds of the audience, it should speak life!”
“Is my calligraphy not speaking?”
“It is speaking...in it’s own way.” Manuba grimaced.
“What is it saying?”
“To be frank it is saying ‘I am written not by a Hokage but by an unconscious plebeian.’ Of course I say that with all due respect.”
“Of course.” Naruto nodded.
“You should heed his advice Naruto, Manuba Yamanaka is a true artist.”
Naruto turned and despite the length of the distance between them he found himself startled by the cold glint in Sakura’s eyes.
“Yes a true artist indeed Naruto, I’m sure you’re familiar with his famous works.”
“I uh...Unfortunately I haven’t seen any of Manuab’s stuff” Naruto stammered. “But I heard he is an up and coming star in the art world.”
“Yes...he is held in high regard among the art community. And why wouldn’t he be? He sold a painting to the Fire Daimyo.”
“Really?” Naruto said impressed.
“Indeed the daimyo’s household paid a hefty five dollars for the artwork. It’s a well known fact that the painting can be found in the daimyo’s palace, in the bathroom, right over the toilet.”
A tense silence crept into the room. .
With feigned cheerfulness Sakura turned to Manuba. “And of course Ino has told me you write the greeting cards that her parents sell at the flower shop.”
Naruto scratched at cheek. “Ah well I admit I have seen those. I’ve bought some for Sakura. I like them. They’re usually cute.”
Manuba cleared his throat. “Miss Haruno seems to be focused on my more commercialized works. My deeper more complex contributions have done much to spur on the current artistic movement that ....
“How could I forget!” Sakura exclaimed. “The police sketches that you do on the weekends for the Konoha military police.”
“Maybe it’s time for a  break” Naruto declared.
Bowing stiffly the red faced artist stomped away from the Hokage-elect. He paused for a moment at the door just long enough to scowl at Sakura and then with his nose held high he departed the room.
“Hmmm your punches are sharp today Sakura.” Naruto stated.
“I’m sorry.”
Naruto shrugged, “Hey it wasn’t my ego you just KO’d. Are you alright?”
Sakura sighed. “I am fine. Look I will apologize to him...eventually. Really, it’s just that he was so horrid to you.”
“But he’s a great artist, it's only natural that he criticize.”
“Who told you he was a great artist?”
“I heard...”
“It’s all hype” Sakura snapped. “Most of it is coming from his friends.”
“Well he walks and talks like a great artist”
“He would.That doesn’t mean much.”
Naruto considered her point.. “So he’s not a genius?”
“He’s incompetent...in my opinion. But art is very much subjective Naruto.”
“How do you know all this Sakura?”
She hesitated before answering. “I’ve done some research on him. You’ve been very busy and joyful these last few weeks Naruto. You haven’t exactly paid a lot of attention to everyone around you.”
Naruto studied her with curious eyes before commenting musingly. “I see”
“It’s understandable. You’re preparing to fulfill your life’s ambition.”
A look of gratitude returned to Naruto’s face and a smile followed in its wake. “There really has been a lot going on lately.”
“You should get used to it. There will be a lot more to do after the first of January.”
His smiled deepened. “Yes, when I am sworn in as Hokage.”
Naruto looked off to the side and sighed deeply, happily. But when he looked back at Sakura the curious eyes had returned. “Are you sure you are alright?”
Sakura smiled back. “Couldn’t be better. I am happy for you.”
He nodded in silent appreciation before glancing back to his calligraphy “You think I can get this down before the ceremony?”
“I’m sure you will. And when you’re the Hokage you can do whatever you want...”
Eyebrows raised Naruto returned his full attention Sakura. “The Hokage can do whatever he wants? Why didn’t anyone tell me? Now I really can’t wait to be Hokage”
Sakura laughed softly. Naruto smiled thinly.
“Sakura....”
“Yes?”
“There is something wrong isn’t there?”
She sighed, she sadly sighed  “Remember when you mentioned how people from other villages were mobbing Shikamaru because they were hoping to gain more access to you.”
“Yeah he hasn’t really been enjoying that kind of attention.”
“Were any of those people representing some of the more prestigious clans....were any of them proposing marriage alliances?”
Caught off guard by the question Naruto simply blinked in response. When he recovered as best he could all he could say was, “yes.”
He waited for a follow up question.
When no further questions came Naruto asked one of his own.
“How do you know about that?”
“I’ve been approached as well.”
Stunned, Naruto sputtered, “That’s crazy-I mean they..why-to you...I mean we’re dating.”
“They don’t really care about that” Sakura said cooly. “They just want to get in your ear. Get the message out there.”
“Sakura why didn’t you say anything about this?”
“I’m saying something now. I think it’s something you should consider.” Sakura said indifferently.
At a loss for words Naruto stared at her for a moment. Eventually he blurted out “WHAT?!”
“You should consider it” Sakura said.
Anxious laughter escaped from Naruto’s lips. “Wow these guys must be very persuasive.”
“They make sense, they make practical sense for you, for the village really. These are very logical, pragmatic opportunities that will be very beneficial for you, but more importantly for the village.”
“Sakura, I didn’t say anything because I wasn’t going to waste my time-you know I have to be honest, I am a little annoyed you are taking this so well.....”
“What? Did you expect me to hit someone?”
Naruto ran his free hand through his hair. “I wouldn’t expect you to hit anyone. But I wouldn’t be surprised if you did. At least In this specific scenario anyway.”
Sakura licked her lips. “Honestly I did punch the first representative. But then I thought well that didn’t really help anything. You will need these people politically right? In the future. So I was polite and I listened. By the fourth and fifth representative they were starting to make sense.”
Naruto shook his head. “Plenty of things sound like they make sense but that doesn’t mean they actually make sense Sakura.”
“I am just saying you should consider it. These people can be vital allies.”
Naruto pointed towards the entrance “Manuba Yamanaka is technically an ally and you destroyed him.”
“He was a hack who had no right being that awful to you!”
“Sakura I-” Nartuo stopped to draw in a breath, “My allies and my potential allies, they may have good intentions but they obviously won’t always know what is right for me.”
“Just think about it Naruto” Sakura said with a small voice. “Your future and the village’s future are linked.”
Naruto groaned out loud. “Yeah I’ve thought about my future and the big problem with this plan is the minor fact that I am going to marry you!”
Sakura’s eyes flashed with sudden surprise.
“Yeah you, I want to marry you!” He shouted. Then he paused and with sudden softness he said “well I mean, well you’d have to say yes first.”
Naruto dropped the paintbrush in his hand when Sakura suddenly burst into a flood of tears.
Bewildered Naruto stated, “I’m sorry - I-- I take it back.”
“No! Wait!” Sakura said before placing her face in her hands. “J-Just turn around I need some time to think.”
“Alright, alright.”
Picking the brush off the floor Naruto turned his attention back to the art. In a subdued mood he replaced the paper on the wall with a new sheet. He dipped the brush in ink and with slow methodical strokes he went to work. He’d just about finished the latest draft when he heard faint sniffing followed by a few big gulps of air. He waited to hear from her but when nothing came he resumed his work. Once he was finished he took a few steps back from the wall and knelt down before it.
“I’m sorry Sakura. I’m sorry you had to go through all that. They shouldn’t have insulted you like that.”
She responded with silence.
“You know we’ll be very happy if you say yes.” Naruto said with his back still turned to her.
Silence
“But I guess I have to consider that you may say no for whatever reason.
After a moment’s consideration Naruto continued. “You said before that I’ll have plenty to do as Hokage. That’s probably right. Maybe I’ll have enough to keep my mind off you.”
He drew in a deep breath and released it.
“But you know Sakura-chan it’s the heart that’ll be the problem.”
“You’ll have everything.” She said finally.
He shrugged. “Everything but what my heart wants. It’s my heart that wants you. It’s my heart that won’t forget. It’s my heart that loves you.”
Suddenly Naruto heard footsteps. Sakura strolled across the room and knelt beside him.
“I am an idiot” She said.
“Sakura....”
She looked up at his calligraphy.
“The future is in the air, the past is in the ground, all is right in Heaven and on Earth,” She read aloud.
“I’m not sure if it’s pessimistic or optimistic” Naruto said.
“It’s lovely”
“Do you think Manuba will like it?”
“I don’t care, it’s lovely.”
“But do you feel anything?”
“I feel foolish, but very much loved. I feel that I am in love with someone wonderful.”
“That’s great! But I don’t know if that has anything to do with the calligraphy. Does it speak to you?
“Yes.”
“What does it say to you?”
“It’s saying “I am written by the the man whom Haruno Sakura will marry. It says ‘she will be happily married to my author for the rest of her life’.”
Naruto laughed happily, “I am thrilled, but again I don’t know if that has anything to do with the calligraphy. How will the villagers feel about it?”
Placing her head upon Naruto’s shoulder Sakura said, “They’ll love it-or else they’ll deal with me.

CHAPTER 7 aka “Blighterpoop”
SPOILERS are sprinkled around extremely liberally for The Property of Hate
Masterpost here
POV, short of Point of View, is about perspectives. Makes sense for a chapter that’s one big fight and chase scene through a tree
Bruh you can actually see exactly the branch that Hero will spear herself on on the title page. also what looks like a deer head on the direct opposite side of it
We actually see the moment RGB’s color pallet resolves itself into his new Look of the Day. Suit counter = 4
Yo those… those are veins on the tree. Nice hint that this thing is also a heart
Hero singing that Gonzo song from the Muppet movie is not ok
Hewwo? Assowk? OwO
Tumblr media
Mad applause once again to mod for the speechboxes bc goddamn. It sets such a tone for character voice. Assok’s voice is pink tinged with Hero’s orange, since they’re copying Hero’s words- it so very neatly establishes that Assok’s voice is a garbled combination of their own, original pink sound and Hero’s orange cadence. When they parrot RGB is in just a few pages, that pink is mixed with RGB’s white text!
And! Hero’s speechbubble visually cracking alongside her voice! Like, that’s motherfucking genius but also NOT OKAY
Tumblr media
Hero, seeing her first friendly face after having a big argument with TV Dad and seeing Scary Dad wear his skin and eviscerate enemies with extreme prejudice: oh thank god
Tumblr media
I didn’t actually get that Hero was mimicking Negative’s face/eye here until now. Even more interestingly, Assok doesn’t recognize it- Assok’s never met Neggy Boi. This might add substance to the “Negative is a recent development, split from RGB when he was speared by Fears in Ch. 2” school of thought
Tumblr media
That’s just the foreshadowing babey dont worry ‘bout it
Tumblr media
ASSOK DOES THE KERMIT :S FACE
Interestingly, RGB recognizes Assok immediately and is. Very contrite. Lookit that awkward hat fiddling. Gotta wonder who the last Hero before our Hero was. Gotta wonder if it was Assok
Tumblr media
Assok is having too much fun with this. Look at that smirk. That’s a smirk of pure glee. Of mischief and cahoots
Tumblr media
Okay I am. In love with the page composition of 120.
Ey, the first time RGB fiddles with his volume
Tumblr media
That’s… a very specific pose there mod. A hanged man sort of pose. A sacrificial sort of symbolism
AND THUS BEGINS MY FAVORITE SET OF RGB MOVEMENTS: FRUSTRATION PARKOUR
Which really just smacks you in the face with a certain reality: RGB is FIT as FUCK in many senses of the word. I’ve already mentioned he STRONK but look. Look at him monkeying around the tree in this chapter. Take it from me that he moves like a rock climber here. Like, a confident one. This pose right here? Goddamn. He’s one of those people that makes the sport look easy damn him
Tumblr media
Would he have muscles if he wasn’t invisible? Will we ever get a glimpse of skin RGB and just get whacked in the eyeballs with an athlete of a man?
I heard RGB has an 8 pack. Heard that he’s shredded
Wow Hero knows some BAD WORDS for a six year old. Who taught this girl to say dumbass?!
Even beyond the hilarity of Assok’s garbled contributions, lookit the colors- not a trace of pink in there. It’s only white and orange, a mixture of RGB and Hero’s namecalling without Assok’s own voice in there and… oh come on. the shapes that make up the speech are white squares and orange circles.
And looking back, Assok repeating Hero words are in orangey-pink circles that gather into a roughly oval-shaped speech, and RGB phrases are in pinkish-white squares that gather into more rectangular shaped speechboxes.
the power of laughter prevails! the argument isn’t over, but they’ve definitely reached a ceasefire
Aaaaand cue the second stabbing! Can’t believe she went a broke her promise to Madras like that
I guess that’s it everyone! Hero’s dead, journey’s over, time to start a new Hero! Thanks for tuning in, see you next time when RGB shows up in my room to take me on a magical adventure where I inevitably end up being turned into, like, an ink creature
New TPoH art challenge, draw your Hero-self after RGB’s gone and fucked it all up
But on that life-saving schism though… going back, we can actually see it opening up over the course of the last 15 or so pages! We first get a look at Hero’s shirt on page 110 when she takes off the Doubtified raincoat. No visible schism
Between pages 110-126 we actually see it re-appear! Super neat!
Check it: page 115: no schism
Tumblr media
page 120: we get our first clear look at Hero’s shirt since climbing the tree and- ah.
Tumblr media
it only seems to get longer and, uh, open-er as their fight continues; here’s page 123 shortly before Hero takes her tumble
Tumblr media
So why did Hero’s schism come back like a bunch of ripped stitches, but RGB’s own stab wound is never seen again? Is it because she got nightmare-gassed on top of the trauma? it is to do with doubts?
RGB hasn’t actually said “I’m sorry” in this chapter that we’ve seen… for Assok to be using it, he’s either used it in the minor timeskip that’s implied between pages 127-128 where RGB has a “I wasn’t attached” breakdown, or Assok heard it when Assok was the Hero… who wants to bet they heard it when their own Hero’s Journey forcibly and tragically ended?
Tumblr media
Y’know, I thought the first go around that RGB was just reassuring himself, but looking closer… he’s petting Assok while Assok cries that they’re sorry. He’s saying it to Assok.
Which isn’t to say that RGB isn’t also feeling horrible, he absolutely is, but realizing that it’s not two characters having two separate meltdowns but RGB comforting Assok while having his own meltdown… that’s some Good Shit right there.
Another note of interest is that there is very little pink in Assok’s cries here; this is almost solely RGB’s voice they’re using, in contrast to another time they’ve used RGB’s voice:
Tumblr media
“what in heavens name are you MADE of?!” sterling stuff, RGB. Sterling stuff. But seriously… this is the second of at least three times Hero’s been noted to be particularly resilient
Additionally, everything is made of Stuff here, not just the trees. Hero didn’t make that statement with a literal intent but… it probably is literal, now
So, the schism opens when Hero experiences, what, anger? Resentment? Or hate perhaps? Also, check out the, like… fear residue she leaves behind in the tree??
Tumblr media
“just this once” lmao ok RGB you keep telling yourself that
He’s siiiinging in the rain
Tumblr media
RGB dips out of panel boundaries constantly but this is a big one.  he breaks the laws of space to point accusingly at Hero’s face from both four inches and 2 meters away
Tumblr media
Whoof, even the MEMORY of Negative glitches the page what fierce. Jeebs you’re gonna give this child nightmares
?? what’s Assok looking a-
Tumblr media
Hold the fu. Hold the fuck on. hold the. That shadow. That’s- is that the butterfly?
I gotta tell ya, I am getting DISTINCT flowey vibes right now.
And thus we conclude Day 3 as the tree begins to thaw... better go find out how that turns out next chapter

All I Ask of You Part 2 (Bucky Barnes X Reader High School AU TBT Special)
Part 1
Note: This is the final part! Honestly, this got much better reviews than I thought it would...huh. Okay, well, I promise the next thing I post is probably gonna be angsty af. Unless I decide to post a different fic, but I swear to you, I have something that will break your heart. Anyway, yeah uh
Warning: I can’t write poetry for shit. Just a little pre-warning there. Also, in the famous words of a certain Star-Spangled sweetheart: Language.
And that was exactly how it happened. I got out of class earlier than I thought and jogged over to the theater room to get ready for practice to find Tony there with another girl; Virginia Potts. Great name, too. I was, to say the least, hurt and pissed.
“T-Tony?” I stammered, tears already pinching at my eyes.
He released Virginia, or Pepper, as most called her and looked at me with a face that said: ‘Oh shit.’ “(Y/N), this isn’t what it looks like!”
“What does it look like, Tony?” I choked, disappointed in him.
“Uh-”
I didn’t bother sticking around to hear his dumb excuse and immediately turned back toward the dance/ballet room to find Nat. Our director noticed me leaving and tried to stop me, but I ignored them. They turned to Bucky for answers and he explained quickly, though I didn’t catch much of what he said.
Tony chased after me and caught me by the door to the dance room, “(Y/N)!”
“Leave me alone, Tony.”
“What, like you left Bucky alone the other night?” He asked threateningly.
I turned to him furiously, “Excuse me?!”
He scoffed, “Yeah, I know about your little ‘platonic bed sharing’, which is complete bullshit, by the way.”
“How the hell do you know about that?” I questioned him.
He snorted, “I have my ways.”
“You’re honestly freaking out about me sharing a bed with my best friend when you’re the one who was just making out with some- some slut?!” I tried to bring logic into the argument, though Tony would never listen to that.
“A dude best friend!”
“Yes, my best friend, because we can’t afford two beds unlike some people who are so rich they just have money spilling out of their ass!” I roared, “If you’re so worried about that then why don’t you just go ahead and buy me another bed, you know? Then again, you haven’t done anything for me in the first place!” I stopped there when I saw Nat burst open the door into the hallway.
“Well, you, (Y/N)-!”
Natasha cut him off, “You better back the fuck off, Stark, before I make you.”
Tony growled, “I can talk to my girlfriend.”
“Not when you treat her like shit.” She retorted, “Besides, I have best friend rights, so back. Off.”
So, he left and Nat immediately enveloped me in a hug. I tried to keep from sobbing, but it didn’t work. “I screwed up, Nat.”
“No, (Y/N). Tony screwed up, doing that to you.”
“But I- I shared a bed with Bucky and he’s my boyfriend and that’s not right-” I stammered, trying to keep my composure.
“(Y/N)-”
“Nat.” A voice from down the hall said. It was Bucky. “Don’t.”
Nat sighed, “Goddamn, Bucky, impeccable timing as always.”
“If we’re gonna do this, we gotta do this the right way.” Bucky started, pulling me from Nat to give me a hug when he approached. “(Y/N), we gotta tell you something that’s very important to us and you’re not gonna like it, but please hear us out. That’s all Nat is asking and that’s all I’m asking of you.”
I nodded shakily and sat down against the wall, where they soon joined me. Natasha started, “We don’t think Tony is right for you.”
Bucky interrupted, “You knew that already, but what we’re trying to say is that we want to show you how we see him; how he really is. I know you really like him and that can blind your judgment. Trust me, I know.” We shared a knowing gaze.
I nodded, nervous, “Okay, I’ll listen.”
Natasha sighed, “You know those quotes I’ve been piling on you? Well, imagine if Bucky said them to you.” She nodded at him.
He sighed, “I don’t mean any of these things, okay, (Y/N)?”
I nodded and Natasha groaned, “Just get on with it.”
He rolled his eyes and started off the list of horrible things that Tony had said. Every single one made me tear up more, so I stopped him, “I-I see now. I’m sorry you guys…”
“It’s fine, (Y/N).” Bucky said as we started a cheesy group hug, “Love is blind and makes us do stupid things.”
Despite their comforting, I was still afraid of Tony and what he could do to me now that he was angry. It didn’t help that he was a genius and rich. He had many outlets, so the possibilities were endless.
***********************************
“You didn’t love her, asshole because you don’t destroy the things you love!”
“Don’t make a girl fall for you if you have no intention of catching her!”
“However do you keep yourself from choking on that constant flow of bullshit coming out of your mouth? You’re amazing!”
“Feed your own ego, I’m busy.”
“If I treated you the way you treated her, you would hate me.”
“How about fixing yourself instead of breaking others? Yeah, that sounds like a plan.”
“Why hurt a girl who never hurt you?”
“There are two sides to every story, but you’re a douche in both of them.”
“Your loss, jerk.”
“Congratulations, now I hate you.”
My friends repeated many of these phrases to Tony over the next few days, though I begged them to stop. He may have deserved it, but it wasn’t their right to carry out the punishment. Unfortunately for them, he was persistent, ignoring their taunts and trying to speak to me repeatedly. Bucky and Tony often got into yelling matches over how he treated me and should move on. Bucky was a good friend; one of the best.
In fact, the night of the show, he brought me roses beforehand. To be more specific, he left them there for me to find with a sweet note.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
I hate sappy poems
And so do you
So I’ll cut the crap
And just be serious
You’re an amazing person
Albeit pretty mischievous
You’re the kindest girl I know
Despite what you’d like to think
You just go with the flow
Without even a blink
I admire you as friend
Possibly even more
I hope we won’t end
As you and Tony did before
Just let me stay here
With you forever
No need to fear,
That’s all I ask of you.
I blushed at the sight of the note. Bucky? Really? How long…?
“I see he finally grew some balls.” Nat, whom I had forgotten was there, commented, reading the poem over my shoulder. “Took him 8 years.” She scoffed, walking across the dressing room to peek out the door.
“E-Eight years?” I asked. Wow, I was oblivious. Even more so than I had thought.
Natasha snorted, “Yup. I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to pull something tonight on stage, though he probably won’t do it without some visual confirmation.”
“Are you implying something?” I asked carefully, wondering if she was thinking with the dirty side of her mind.
“Ew, no.” She gagged, “I mean like a look. You two basically speak through body language and signals, so you’ll be fine.”
    “What about-?”
Nat sighed, “(Y/N), Tony doesn’t matter anymore. You can move on without feeling guilty. He screwed up, not you, (Y/N). And now Bucky can make a move without feeling guilty, too.”
“He felt guilty?” If I had known, I would’ve stopped things with Tony earlier, to be honest.
Natasha nodded, “All the time. When you weren’t with Tony, you fawned over him and Bucky was worried you two wouldn’t stay best friends if he told you the truth. He was always so paranoid, even though I told him you wouldn’t reject him. In fact, the only thing he ever asked me was to never tell you how he felt.”
    “You should’ve!” I protested.
She shrugged, “How do you refuse the one request you’ve ever gotten from a person? Seems kind of rude.”
    I was silent.
“5 minutes to places, you guys! Let’s do this!” I heard someone call. I looked to Natasha, who slipped out of the backstage area quietly, as she wasn’t supposed to be back there for so long.
I took a deep breath, looking at myself in the mirror. I could do this. I could do the show and I could face Bucky, as well as Tony. I knew exactly what I would say, with my eyes, to Bucky during the show and I knew that he was my other half.
He was my best friend, one of the few people who knew about my past and understood me. He related to me and took care of me for 8 years. He was sweet and kind, daring and brash at times, too. In that moment before stepping onto the stage, I realized that Bucky Barnes was the one.
The first time I spotted him during the show, I locked eyes with him, hoping he would get it. He gave no reaction and started his verse of the song. Unfortunately, I think he was confused and, frankly, so was I.
Finally, the time came for All I Ask of You and I crossed my fingers that he would be able to decipher what I was trying to say.
“No more talk of darkness. Forget these wide-eyed fears. I’m here. Nothing can harm you. My words will warm and calm you.” Bucky never broke eye contact while holding my arm gently in front of the hundreds of parents, students, staff, and others in the auditorium. “Let me be your freedom. Let daylight dry your tears. I’m here, with you, beside you to guard you and to guide you.”
I stepped back a little, keeping eye contact, basically staring into his soul. “Say you love me every waking moment. Turn my head with talk of summertime. Say you need me with you now and always. Promise me that all you say is true. That’s all I ask of you.” How ironic that we were singing this song, considering Bucky repeated that phrase frequently, or at least something similar to it.
“Let me be your shelter. Let me be your light. You’re safe, no one will find you. Your fears are far behind you.” As he nodded slightly, I could tell he was speaking of my father and Tony. Were those fears really that far behind me?
“All I want is freedom, a world with no more night. And you, always beside me, to hold me and to hide me.” I followed the blocking, turning to look at him after walking away. This time though, instead of glancing down at my feet, I stared right at him. I hoped he got the message.
“Then say,” He belted out the words, surprising me a little with how loudly he sang. Bucky had never really sung that loudly in practice, much less in front of a crowd. “You’ll share with me one love, one lifetime. Let me lead you from your solitude. Say you need me with you, here beside you. Anywhere you go let me go, too. Christine, that’s all I ask of you.”
“Say you’ll share with me one love, one lifetime. Say the word and I will follow you. Share each day with me, each night, each morning. Say you love me-” I hoped he wouldn’t glance away like he usually did at the next line.
“You know I do.” Bucky stared right at me, showing just a glimpse of a smile.
“Anywhere you go let me go, too! Love me, that’s all I ask of you.” We held the last note and I smiled brightly at remembering the next part.
Bucky swept me around so that he held me in his arms, though his back was to the audience. He leaned in as if to kiss me and, instead of a staged kiss, actually pressed his lips to mine. I swear that sparks flew.
The crowd burst into applause, but only because it was the end of the song. With their view of the kiss, it looked fake to them. Only the cast backstage could see that it was a real kiss. From my peripheral vision, I noticed many of them gawking, while some seemed nonchalant about the whole thing as if they had expected it. Only one person had a different reaction and only one looked pissed as hell.
    Tony Stark was not happy.
To be honest, though, I couldn’t care less. Bucky would take care of me and I him, as best I could. I deserved better than Tony, I realized. He was a dirty, lying, cheat who didn’t give a damn about who he hurt. That would be his downfall, in the end.
The rest of the show was smooth, though afterward was not quite so nice. Tony had been glaring at Bucky and I, who had basically been silently holding hands backstage and onstage the entire time, for the entire show. When the show was over, the entire cast could finally speak, as we were told to be quiet backstage before.
I sighed after curtain call and Bucky echoed my relief. I turned to him, “Eight years? Really?”
He shrugged, blushing. “Since I met you.”
“You are too cute when you’re flustered.” I teased.
He rolled his eyes, “You’re the only one who can get me flustered, you know.”
“I know.” I smirked devilishly, “I revel in it.”
    “Nice vernacular there.”
    “Why thank you.”
There was a moment of silence before he spoke, “So, what now?”
I shrugged, “I dunno. Wherever you wanna go with this, I’ll go, too.”
“Christine,” We sang together, smiling. “That’s all I ask of you.”
We laughed before another voice said, “How cute.” Mockingly.
I turned with a new fury at the voice, “Oh, fuck off, Tony, I’m done with your shit.”
He looked a little startled at my words. “My shit? Talk about ‘platonic bed-sharing.’”
Bucky stepped in, “You try living with one income between two growing teens with insatiable appetites. See how many beds you can afford then.”
Tony rolled his eyes, “Look, whatever. I didn’t come here to argue.”
“Then why did you come, Tony?” I asked, crossing my arms.
“To give you a warning.” He threatened, “I’m not gonna give you another chance, (Y/N). You go with him, you give up on me.”
I scoffed, “Wow, how could I never see how full of yourself you are? I honestly couldn’t care less. I don’t need you and I sure as hell don’t want you anymore.”
    He grew furious, “You-!”
Bucky stepped in front of me. “You heard her, Stark. Move on.”
    So, he left.
Bucky turned to me, “I’m really glad he’s gone.”
I sighed with relief, “Me too.” I smiled. “Home?”
    “Home.”
“Think we should replace the roses with the ones you gave me?”
    “I think that’s a great idea.”
Requests are always open!

CHARLI XCX - BOYS [6.72] Who's looking for a good time?
Eleanor Graham: Video game noises will only ever be cute. They will never be evocative in the way that a synth line, a "woah" or even a "hey" can be. They may serve once or twice as punctuation but they cannot, aided only by a one-syllable word, carry a hook. But I do like the languorous glitter plod of this. And the sugar rush of bridge: "I was miles away, yeah!" I love to have fun, honestly. I'm just bitter because the video coerced me into a crush on [redacted]. [5]
Anthony Easton: The video is a masterpiece, a weaponized, high femme, millennial pink reworking of the ironic/not-ironic gender trouble of Collier Schorr -- made even more disturbing by finding out how hot I find Charlie Puth. The song, with its hint of Super Mario coins like a wink against capitalism, with the minimal drum beat like blood flowing from the heart to more southern regions, that laconic kind of delivery that suggests a louche moral decadence. Plus, how she sings the phrase ring tone, is almost as good, as ear wormy, as the perfect hook line of "I'm sorry, I missed your party." [10]
Nellie Gayle: 'I need that bad boy to do me right on a Friday/ 'And I need that good one to wake me up on a Sunday/'That one from work can come over on Monday night/ I want em all.' Never have the bubblegum archetypes of boy toys been so clearly joyously articulated as in Charli XCX's newest single. A pop star who clearly enjoys taking the piss out of that title (when once asked about why she liked her single 'Break the Rules' in an interview, she replied 'I like that it's so . . stupid'), Charli revels in the stereotypes of boy crazy, partied out girls. The many 'types' of girls have been outlined throughout the pop cannon - there are crazy girls, there are fun girls, there are dirty girls. In one way or another, Charli XCX has inhabited all of these personas for the sake of great, EDM-laced pop. In the video for 'Boys', she takes her own routine objectification (which she usually handles with amusement more than anger), and casually tosses it back to pop culture's finest dudes. Stormzy munches on some fruit loops, Joe Jonas licks his ice cream mustache, Diplo should presses some poodles. Saturated in bright colors, these visuals will come to mind every time you relisten to 'Boys.' It's a wink to gender roles that is cuter than it is inflammatory, and like all of Charli's best moves, it's best described as 'fun.' [8]
Maxwell Cavaseno: Functional to a certain level of flatness that Charli's wound herself around to the point that I'm never sure if it's her strength or her weakness. Still for the sake of all this melancholy gazing, and the spry little chip-tune punctuations, that bleakness serves as a complimentary sense of boredom, an audible fluster of the lips and sigh at something that feels more frustrating than it ever needs to be. Odd to find something so disappointed in itself could be so satisfying. [6]
Dorian Sinclair: Charli XCX sure is a chameleon, isn't she? There's a sort of dreamy wistfulness here we haven't heard from her too often, and with a different performer I suspect it could quickly become saccharine. But the wryness she brings to most of her performances is here as well, and that combined with the humour in the lyrics (and that adorable chiptune sample) has ensured that, since I first heard it, I've been busy thinkin' bout "Boys." [8]
Alfred Soto: Chirping wistfully like Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder, the synths and Charli XCX turn "Boys" into a tuneful flutter. Who wouldn't get wistful at the thought of absent boys or the boys we can't have? [6]
Julian Axelrod: Once you get past the instant-classic video (and lord knows I haven't) you realize "Boys" is a work of pop genius. The chorus is one of those brilliantly simple, universally relatable, deliriously catchy gems every songwriter wishes they'd thought of first. But the real magic is in the verses, as Charli reveals her thirst has left her friends out to dry. "I wish I had a better excuse like/I had to trash the hotel lobby" is such a perfect line, adding nuance and depth to both the song and Charli's party monster persona. (Which makes it all the more fascinating that she doesn't have a songwriting credit here.) The song becomes more resonant the more you listen: Who among us hasn't abandoned (or been abandoned by) a friend for some fleeting affection? That's what makes "Boys" so sublime: Like all great pop songs, it's really about friendship. [9]
Crystal Leww: Much fuss has been made about this music video, but the song itself is so dreamy, conjuring images of sunshine and grass fields. I am not sure if Charli XCX will ever get to be a huge pop star, but I don't care; her music feels so atmospheric and familiar, like it sits in the bottom of your stomach and wriggles through your brain and body. "Boys" has stuck with me for days, whisking me away from sweaty subway cars in the morning back to the weekend afternoons in the sun. [8]
Thomas Inskeep: I really hope that the viral popularity of this video leads to "Boys" going overground and Charli XCX becoming a real, big pop star in the US (I know that "Boom Clap" was a top 10 single three years ago, but that was three years ago), not only because she's one of our best purveyors of pop right now, but because "Boys" is relentlessly, charmingly cute. It's purposefully underproduced, and thus sounds very low-key and almost quiet, in a highly endearing manner. And besides, who of us isn't guilty of missing ______ because we were "busy thinkin' 'bout boys"? [8]
Joshua Copperman: A song about the female gaze and a video for the male gaze. Well, to quote a show that this might fit well on, it's a little more nuanced than that - there's nothing here that suggests that she's attracted to masculinity or manliness, unlike, say, "he's so tall and handsome as hell", and Charli's narrator is more in love with the idea of BOYS! than actual boys. (Swap out boys for "girls" and it's a Mary Lambert song, but that might be part of the point.) It's an interesting step after the #1 Angel mixtape managed to blend the PC Music stuff she was doing with something more accessible - this is full-tilt accessible, but with just enough edge from Charli's breathy performance to ensure that it stays true to her weirder side. [7]
Anjy Ou: I was surprised that Kero Kero Bonito didn't write or produce this - "Boys" hits that sweet spot between mainstream pop and Japanese bedroom pop that she's so good at, especially at the beginning. Charli, ever the pop chameleon, gives this sound her own self-indulgent twist, with lyrics about ditching a hard-partying lifestyle to swoon over her many suitors. Its blips are cute and sweet, and she cruises languidly through the song, like she wrote this the morning after while still in her pink cloud of peak crush. It would be a bit too basic for me, but someone set this song to a video of my favourite k-pop boy band and suddenly everything made sense. [7]
Katherine St Asaph: I mean, I too have had a crush on every boy, but this is just the languid parts of "Grins" severed from the exciting ones, or "What I Like" without the specificity and sex, or "I Don't Like Anyone" with trap vocals, Super Mario Bros. coins and emotional anemia. It's not that the older Charli XCX grows the less mature her music does -- that's too easy -- but the more detached she grows from anticipation or euphoria or danger, all those things boys can do. I suppose it's novel that the video's full of cutesy-alluring boys rather than cutesy-alluring girls to distract from a lack of substance, but there too, I prefer men. [4]
Stephen Eisermann: Anyone has ever felt "boy crazy" probably had the same mixture of nostalgia and anxiety while listening to this song for the first time. My first thought was immediately, "omg Stephen, don't overplay this song or say you relate, just be cool, even if this is a blog straight from your now deleted Tumblr," but it quickly became "damn Charli... you get me." Charli makes efforts to disguise or explain herself for this all too common phase and instead simply admits that, yeah, she was thinking about dudes. This willingness to be vulnerable, because yes, admitting you think about the gender you are sexually attracted to often is showing vulnerability, plays well against the quiet composition, and the bell/high pitched sound that plays after every time Charli says Boys perfectly sums up the feeling of butterflies that often accompanies those thoughts. All in all, a terrific effort and only made better by a simple yet colorful video that shows all the different kinds of boys we are attracted to, even if I could've done with a bit more brown goodness in the video. [8]
Will Rivitz: There's so much to love about "Boys," but I think the part most telling of Charli XCX's genius is the utter perfection of its chorus. It's quintessential Charli: though superficially inane, it captures in four perfect lines her bittersweetly self-reflective ethos. She doesn't really have any excuse for blowing her friends off -- she wishes she did, it'd make things a lot easier -- but the swell of life and love and just everything worth caring about got in the way, so she let things happen. It's a beautiful perspective, "stop and smell the roses" restated freshly and eloquently in the face of a neon facade Charli doesn't really care to hold up at the moment, the one people usually think of when they think of her. Charli XCX juggles personas adroitly, but I don't think that's so much a function of her skill inhabiting multiple characters as much as it is her skill at expressing the complexities of human experience as, y'know, complexities, as opposed to hammered-down stubs which fit a general narrative arc too cleanly. Here, she discards the party-girl aesthetic of Number 1 Angel for a more passive outlook, but the beauty of "Boys" is that the two attitudes never feel contradictory. No matter who a person is or what they act like, sometimes it's ok for their head to be in the clouds. [9]
Will Adams: That Charli XCX has done the hyper-crush premise many times before shouldn't be a deterrent -- it's where she excels. The problem with "Boys" is that it replaces the textured sonics of True Romance with tinny snares and overused GameBoy switch-ons and the ebullience of "Boom Clap" with the dead-eyed stare of "After the Afterparty." [4]
Edward Okulicz: Eh, I preferred it when Charli XCX was a whip-smart songwriter who made cool, indelible, effortless pop. Now her effort seems to end with the concept, because beyond its catchy monomania and shareable video, there's not anything else here. [3]
Jonathan Bradley: "Boys" wafts like a daydream: it's an insular and domestic song, a pastel doodle in a diary's margin or a decorated bedroom wall. Kitty Pryde knows how effectively these rough drafts can invoke the intensity of little infatuations. Charli's rough draft is very rough though, and the chiptune chirrups of "Boys" are aggressive in their flimsiness. It gets old to be reiterating this with each new single Charli puts out, but PC Music's conviction that it constitutes a clever deconstruction of pop to make a kind that sounds deliberately shoddy is not an interesting one, and Charli's embrace of their approach has squandered her talents. Here, she dials up her natural insouciance -- a playfulness fitting for the subject matter -- to the point it seems she can barely be bothered delivering the lyric. The performativity undermines the persona; this isn't a song about crushes on boys, but a song about Charli knowing how much we all want to enjoy a song about crushes on boys. [4]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: It took a dozen listens before I realized the song's ephemeral, almost nondescript nature works strongly in its favor. This is the sound of an instinctual sigh that appears while daydreaming, and Charli XCX captures that perfectly when she intonates "boys." The subtle details here -- the water samples, the ticking, the ringing phone -- never feel intrusive, thankfully. Which means that for these short three minutes, the fantasy never dies. [7]

J. Cole - Forest Hills Drive
A journey of trials and tribulations combined with lessons learned is what Jermaine Cole experiences. A vivid picture of each phase of his journey gets depicted beautifully to me. In life, I believe that we all get distracted from different environments and prioritize materialistic things such as social media and use it as our main source of love, mistakenly. In this album, Cole vividly portrays that this should not be the case and instead, we should prioritize non materialistic things such as friends, family, and home to bring happiness.
First, Cole reiterates the question: “Do you wanna be happy?’’ What he means by happy is to be free and to go chase your dreams to achieve that happiness. Now, he is calling for his audience to do this, however, to me, this is a message to his younger self at the preliminary stages of his rap career as the second track of the album, “January 28th,” is a homage to himself in my opinion. The reason it’s a homage to himself in the initial stages of his rap career is because of the intro of the song, “Can I make a million dollars off a rap tune?” being reiterated. This told me that Cole was questioning if he can really make it into the rap scene with his rapping skills. He pays homage to himself by stating that his lyrics can paint a vivid picture in the audience’s head so well that it will cure blindness in a clever hyperbole. To sound braggadocious, he even calls himself a God because he  “... ain’t serve no pies.. slang no dope..don’t bring no lies..” meaning that he “wears a white hat” and he views himself as the almighty above all because of that while his contemporaries in the rap scene do what he does not. Then, Cole brings us back to when he lost his virginity and it turned out that the girl who he lost it with, was also a virgin because throughout the song, it was unclear. This was Cole’s first time experiencing sexual intercourse with a girl that he again vividly paints how the conversation of it started with her asking him if he has had sex before and the aftermath of it, leading up to it as she says, “I can tell you a pro, but baby, be gentle cause I ain’t never did this before.” This is an ideal way to lose your virginity to me because both partners are doing it for the first time. It’s also relatable because losing your virginity at a young age has been apart of the culture of my generation so if you have not done that then there is a subtle notion that you are looked down on, or you might feel left out as for instance, you can be the only kid out of your five friends who haven’t lost their virginity meaning that they share a common experience that you are not apart of thus bringing pressure. The girl who Cole lost his virginity with likely felt that same pressure which is why it was unclear if she has lost at all until the end of the song. Cole even lies to her when she asks if he has had sex before by responding: “Of Course I had sex before” knowing I was stunting’’ and tells me why he lied with the lyric: “But if I told the truth, I knew that I’d get played out son..”
In 2003, Cole graduates from high school, turned 18, and at the same time struggled with his identity. Again, he reiterates, “Who am I?” and in verse two, he follows the crowd as I did in my adolescence. He follows the crowd of drug takers and dealers and asks his drug dealer friend if he could smoke his drugs and it turns out his friend ironically looks up to Cole as he even says “... you everything I wanna be that’s why I fucks with you.”  He idolizes the fact that he’s about to graduate with a degree while he is not and will be instead, selling harder drugs. It seems like to me that Cole’s friend does not want Cole to end up like him because he has the opportunity and the tools to do something bigger and this dialogue gives Cole an epiphany of who he can really be and moves to New York to chase his dream of becoming a rapper since his mom made a genius and he “.. ain’t got’ take it for granted... And show you that I can fly.” The reason why he moves to New York is because it is proclaimed as the city of dreams and it actually is where he went to embark oh is rap career  according to him. The next phase of Cole’s journey he tells the tale of two cities. The song starts out with telling me what his dreams are and that is to be rich. He raps about his aspirations of getting rich, ultimately he is “... tired of seeing’ niggas flaunt, I wanna flaunt too nigga.” The “Tale of 2 Cities” is a story Cole talking to his drug dealer friend how he will achieve his “Hollywood dreams”  by going to New York. Next phase of his journey is his when he has made it into the rap scene and says “A lotta niggas sat on the throne, I am the latest...” This tells me that he has honed in his skills and feels very confident about them. I am assuming that this is after the release of his sophomore album, Born Sinner, that was successful. This was about a year before Mackelmore won a Grammy for best rap album thus leading to him rapping how “... white people have snatched the sound...” which I agree with, however, they only do it temporarily and it only happens because they are mainstream. Similar to January 28th, he is being braggadocios with lyrics such as “I’m like that time you bagged a dime and checked ya phone and saw it was a number missing..” He took a leap of faith by following his dreams and it turned out to be very beneficial to him as he reached is destination of being a successful rapper. However, in the outro, Cole ends the song saying that “deep down every poet just wanna be loved..” which tells me that he was processing all what was happening to him, but felt that something was missing which is love.
Following to the next phase, Cole starts “St. Tropez” saying “Roll up and smoke my sins away... She asked me if I’m scared to fly, to tell the truth, I’m terrified...” His previous album is called “Born Sinner” so this was the phase after the album and Cole is still missing something so he is terrified to move on with his career as “He’s on his way to Hollywood.” He is feeling despair and sadness and “Lately, it’s been hard for me to smile.” St. Tropez is comparable to Hollywood because of its attractiveness and richness which Cole is contemplating to go too because of how he is feeling. “Hollywood Cole” is in full fruition in the track, G.O.M.D meaning that he has made up his mind and moved on with his rap career regardless of his feelings. It turns out that more and more people are showing him love and giving him props. This is an example of non materialistic love because it is not authentic. Authentic love is given at your lowest and highest points of life. Also, his friends such as his drug dealer one to turns out to be fake according to Cole as he says that “Niggas is fake, they anime.” My opinion comes from the fact that the only specific person Cole talks about from his hometown was the drug dealer and he played a part in Cole realizing his dreams. However, as what happens to almost everybody who goes “Hollywood,” they change because of their environment and “I wanna go back to Jermaine, and I won’t tell nobody” is the lyric that Cole ends the “Bridge” with then Cole saying that he has never experienced love until he has met a girl  during this phase of his journey as she even “... Got me thinking’ bout some kids..” Cole does what every young kid in their 20′s does and that is basically be a “fuck boy” as they are romanticizing with multiple women in a constant cycle because of their immaturity . For instance, he was getting his feet rubbed by a girl at night while at the same time, in a relationship with a girl and he wanted to stay with this girl and even have the audacity to tell his actual girl that he is not coming back home. She stereotypes Cole since he’s “Hollywood” and claims that he can get with any girl which is ironic how he actually did do just that. This makes Cole come up with an ephipany that he wants “... that  Jada and Will Love..” and he does not want a hoe as the girl who was rubbing his feet was because “.. she don’t wanna be saved..” meaning that she did not want to settle down to maintain the “free spirit.” They breakup because she has made him a fool three times and all Cole could do now, is list his regrets of failed relationships because of their shallowness.
In the following phase, Cole knows what he wants and that is real love so he calls up him his old lover to reconnect with a simple “Hello.” The whole track is just him reminiscing about her and coming to the realization that he misses her. “Shit seems so sad when you look back” is reiterated in the “Bridge” and Cole knows now that what he and her had was real and it is exactly what he wants now. This is the phase where Cole realizes the value of his home and where he came from. Like any good parent, he or she is supposed to support and believe in the child’s dreams no matter what they are in order for their purpose in life to not be weathered. I believe that everyone’s purpose in life is to achieve their dreams to not feel remorseful. Cole is very appreciative of his mother because she is the reason why “I keep my head high, I got my wings to carry me..” as the wings can be a metaphor for her meaning that without her, he wouldn’t be where he is in his rap career. In this appreciation phase of his journey, he now knows that there is “No such thing as a life that’s better than yours.” On this journey, he learns that he wasn’t happy even with all of the materialistic things he had such as money, people giving him props at his highest points, and ironically, he was happy when he was broke because of the materialistic things in his environment that was authentic. The phrase “money talks” comes into play because the people Cole meant who he thought he could depend on to be a real friend or even love such as the one rubbing his feet were only temporary in his life. There are “Fake niggas, mad snakes, Snakes in the grass let a nigga know that he arrived” meaning that he knew that he was successful when he was attracting the fairness of people relating to the accumulation of wealth. All that matter to Cole at this point of his journey are the people from his home because they are the ones who truly loved him such as his drug dealer friend who instilled the confidence in him to achieve his dreams.
In conclusion, Jermaine Cole has came all this way to realize that only one ting matter in life and that is your happiness and nothing else. Cole had to learn this through trial and tribulations through phases of starting his rap career, getting recognition, engulfed in the fame and fortune, being a “fuck boy,” and then realizing his true happiness.  He had to experience real and fake love as he experienced them in two different chapters of his life. How his surroundings treated him in the first chapter was different from the second chapter and they both dictated his emotions at those respective times. Whatever chapter dictated his emotions to be positive was the one that he chose at the end which is why it became valuable to him.
