A Grand(ish) Theory of What the Heck

I love the utterly unhinged, super detailed theories about what's going on in Good Omens, especially in season 2. I hope one or more of them turn out to be true, as some kind of glorious puzzle-box-hidden-code monstrosity. And also I think that there has to be a simpler explanation for things, for the people who are at least Somewhat Normal (tm) about this show. (... I assume such people do exist somewhere...) This is what I have been pondering recently.

The thing that started me thinking about this was this post, containing some promotional materials for season 2 that feature main characters with scenes in their heads. Like this:

Seeing this created a very similar situation in my own head, but with a nice shiny lightbulb.

All the weirdness: the car, the sideburns, the clock, the behavior of the folks of Soho, the vanishing storefront signs. The absence of God. I think this is all because everything we see is in their heads.

I don't mean it's made up. At least not entirely. Memory is already a plot point. Why not explore it on a deeper level? I've read theories emphasizing the minisodes' stories being retold by Aziraphale and Crowley. I think the whole season is like that.

You know that sort of conventional-wisdom-fact-concept that you can only dream faces of people you've seen before (or variations therein), because your brain can't make new faces up? So it just fills in what it thinks is close enough? I think that idea, applied to remembering or recollecting things, could explain so many things that are wonky in this show.

Wonky Things

Crowley parking in an impossible London location? He definitely remembers it was in London, so his brain just stuck some obvious London landmarks in there.

Awkward clattering happening when Crowley throws the stacks of books he's inexplicably carrying around the bookshop? He wouldn't actually throw Aziraphale's books! But he'd like to think he's cool and nonchalant enough to do that, and if he did it would definitely make Some Kind of Noise.

Jim walking toward the bookshop from somewhere mysterious? Maggie and Nina saw him first, and he came from that direction, so he must've walked all that way. They don't know about the elevator in the Donkey.

Aziraphale remembers tartan hills and the Loch Ness monster because he was having a jolly time driving through Scotland, so obviously the scenery must've been whimsical Scottish things.

Nina put the Honolulu roast sign up, so she remembers its presence, but perhaps the occult/ethereal visitors to her shop do not.

Maggie really did text Aziraphale about the rent, but a note through the mail slot is a much more dignified way for a scholarly angel to imagine he received a message.

On the Fallibility of Recall

This season is loaded with unrealistic inclusions. The colors are turned up to 11. Some of the scenes are more caricature than believable interaction. Remembering things never copies or reproduces them with what one might call high fidelity.

Scenes recalled by separate memories will inherently vary. One person's hefty jigger might be another person's dash. Who knows for sure where the sun was that day? You and I might recall an event having different lighting or a different color palette, sort of like viewing something with different lens filters.

According to Neil, Crowley is an unreliable narrator of the story of his Fall. He labels the variations in clock times as a continuity error in a show where Everything Is Meant, but he doesn't say whose continuity error it is. He insists that the Bentley is the same through the whole season; maybe it was the same, but remembered differently. Maybe this is part of why there's more CGI but it's harder to spot.

So What?

Is this all there is to it? I sure hope not. I like my Good Omens with enough layers to put to shame an onion wrapped in a cake and covered in a parfait.

Is this possibly the fancy footwork that's distracting from the real magic trick? I wouldn't put it past Our Gaiman. There are a lot of things one could hide in the narrative of unreliable memory.

Is this going to stop me from rewatching and repondering and remaking theories for the next couple years? Not even at gunpoint.

Let's talk about the "Iris killed Mephisto" situation

With season 3’s possible (and hopeful) arrival, I thought this post might be necessary.  I’ve been going through a lot of old lolirock posts, and the amount of people that seem thoroughly convinced that Iris was responsible for Mephisto’s death is absolutely astounding. Like, have we watched the same scene? You could attribute her a small fraction of the blame, sure. But all of it? It seems to me like some of yall (in a very Praxina fashion, may I add) just want someone convenient to blame. 

Like, I’m all in favor of the “Iris killed Mephisto” jokes, like, keep making them, I love them. But… it should stay that way… a joke. Because some people seem to have taken it quite literally. 

I think I’ve read something similar somewhere before but, Mephisto’s death was not only one person’s fault. That was the point. It was a combination of variables that all ended up going tremendously wrong for the twins, BUT, one in which NONE of the characters involved had any intention of contributing to. 

You wanna blame people? Sure, you could blame Iris. She was the one that allegedly couldn’t control her Shanilla form. She was the one who sent the blast that, when collided with Gramorr’s own energy force, hit and shattered the big, shiny, and mildly explosive rock, that was going to fall onto Praxina, before Mephisto yeeted her away like a ragdoll and took on the blast himself. Wow. Does that not sound far fetched and awfully convoluted? Yeah, because it is. If anything, you could say that Iris indirectly and totally unintentionally contributed to Mephisto’s death. 

And you know what? While we’re on the subject of blaming, why not blame Gramorr? He was the one who started this whole mess for everyone. He is the reason that battle was even happening in the first place. The energy Iris sent collided with HIS magic, causing the blast, so, logically speaking, he should also be blamed, right? Did he mean to “kill” Mephisto? No. Though if I’m being totally honest, he probably wouldn’t have cared either way, but still. I’m not sure he even noticed that was even happening. But it also wasn’t his intention. 

Oh, do you wanna blame someone else? Great! How ‘bout we blame Praxina herself? If she had just left with Mephisto, like he wanted, instead of “wanting to watch” (what the heck was that about anyways? babygirl, i love you but TF?!), they wouldn’t have been anywhere near the blast when it happened. And then, to save her from her own recklessness, Mephisto was the one who got screwed. 

Heck, we can even blame Mephisto himself. He was the one who decided to jump in front of his sister to save her, wasn’t he? No one made him do it. 

See? We can blame pretty much everyone. OR we could rip the page we took from Praxina’s blame book, crumple it into a ball, rip it to shreds, and throw it off of a bridge. No good comes from trying to find a non-existent scapegoat, and that’s something that some of you, AND Praxina alike, are going to have to learn at some point. Sometimes things aren’t just black and white. There are shades of gray (this is so cliché, but it’s true).

But let’s backpedal, shall we? Imagine Iris was actually the one who undoubtedly, yet accidentally killed Mephisto. I’m gonna ask the real question now. Why should she care? I love the twins more than anything else, obviously, they are my favorite characters in the show, and I feel awful about what happened to them. But they’re not exactly saints. I’m not even going to list all the awful things they did to the princesses, and Iris specifically, because we'd be here forever. But I’ll use Princess Brenda as an example. You know, the episode where Mephisto and Praxina basically “killed” all of Iris’s friends, AND the love of her life, just… because. And they did all that, 1) on purpose; and 2) did not feel bad about it in the slightest, and even gloated about it. Like, they were thrilled. So how exactly is this any different? If anything, it’s way worse. Iris indirectly and completely unintentionally killed Mephisto (as stated above), with lots of other people to be blamed for it as well, AND, she even apologized to Praxina, and said she felt sorry about her loss. She obviously didn’t feel good about it.

What I think screwed her over with certain members of the fandom was the “But you can’t blame me for it.” line. Because maybe I don’t know, YOU CAN’T. Also, what was she supposed to do? She knew it wasn’t fully her fault, as she fucking should. So should she just drop to the ground and cry her eyeballs out, and mourn the loss of her enemy who had consistently made her life a living hell for god knows how long? Like, are some of y’all mental? And it’s fucking hypocritical of Praxina to expect anything more than that from Iris as well, considering everything they've done to her (but, then again, Praxina IS a hypocrite, not a single surprise there).

At the end of the day, neither Iris, nor any of the other princesses owed Mephisto (or Praxina) anything. They didn’t owe him their grief, their mourning, they didn't owe him shit. Because, guess what? A lot of yall aren’t prepared to hear this but. Mephisto enjoyed screwing with the princesses' lives just as much as Praxina. No consideration whatsoever about anyone they had to trick, backstab or hurt. Yeah, Gramorr was making them do it. But they sure as hell were having a blast through it all. In fact, only near the end, when Gramorr was yapping about planetary enslavement or whatever, did Mephisto actually start to kinda realize the gravity of the situation (while Praxina was still on cloud fucking nine). Which- props to him, I guess. I think he was realizing that all of that wasn’t just some big elaborate joke. I think I’ve made a meme of this in the past like, “Wait. You guys are actually evil? I thought it was a joke.”, and this basically perfectly sums up what I think was going through his brain at that moment. That’s why he was so apprehensive till the very end. That, and also the fact that he was then starting to realize that him and Praxina were not any different from Lev, or Jodan, or any of the other minions Gramorr lied to and exploited, to do his dirty bidding for him. They, too, had been expendable, tricked into devoting their entire lives to someone who filled their heads to the brim with nonsense and empty promises of grandeur, when, in reality, he wasn’t actually planning on following through with anything. Why would he? After all, they were just cheap, stupid merchandise.

Still, none of that removes the fact that both Mephisto and Praxina were bad people. Yes, they were kids, so there was obviously room for growth if put in the correct environment, but nonetheless. And I agree with people when they say that Mephisto had more good in him than Praxina, but that still doesn’t make him a good person. The problem is that people like to babify him, and that kind of takes away all the complexity that makes his character so beautiful.

You can love a character and believe they deserved better, while also holding them accountable for their actions and acknowledging they weren’t perfect. 

This is going to sound insensitive as hell but the twins made their bed. Now they have to lay in it (well, Praxina has. Mephisto… well, he can't really lay on anything, can he?- because he is- ya know- dead, but… whatevs). 

Iris could’ve even not shown a single ounce of sadness for what happened to Mephisto and she still would’ve been well within her right to do so. Of course, she is objectively “good” so the expectations for her to do “good” are much higher than the bad guys. The villains are “objectively bad” so whenever they do something only slightly itty bitty nice they’re immediately reduced to “misunderstood” or “poor babies omg uwu” or “they didn’t do anything wrong ever”. Because for them the bar is on the floor, the expectations are low, they don’t need to do anything. For christ sake, let the protagonists make mistakes, allow them to not be perfect, to have dimension. Y’all can’t handle it, can you? Either Iris is a bitch for “killing” poor wittle baby Mephisto or she’s a, quote on quote, “Mary Sue”. Like, pick a lane and leave female characters alone. Let them be complex, let them lose their marbles, let them make mistakes and learn from them. This goes for Iris, but for Praxina too. 

She’s gonna fuck up a lot in season 3, we all know it. She’s gonna do unspeakable things, and I fully believe that, at some point, she might even get past the point of no return. Because she’s human too. Because, right now, she’s all alone without the one person that was always there for her, and that she always took for granted. This doesn’t have much to do with the original point of this post, maybe I’ll elaborate on this later, but I think that one of the main conflicts that Praxina is going to deal with this season is GUILT. The guilt of knowing you didn’t appreciate someone enough while they were there, that you took them for granted. She’s gonna think back to all the times she yelled at or hurt Mephisto (yes, most of that was your usual sibling stuff, but she did take it too far sometimes), and that’s gonna fucking break her. You just know she’s going to have those memories replaying over and over again in her head 24/7. And that’s gonna fuck her up badly. 

She’s still a bad person, but she has layers. She is a complex human being, always, but now more so than ever, and y’all better keep that in mind (also, please please please @teamlolirock, you have the opportunity to do something great with this, maybe even something a little darker to get different audiences for the show as well, and peak the interest of people that aren’t all that familiar with the show yet, please do not waste it, DO NOT squander this potential). 

Also, might I add, I loved how in character for her it was that she immediately blamed Iris for the whole Mephisto thing. Like, if there’s something Praxina has never done during this whole show, was take the blame for anything. That’s her Achilles’s heel, one of her biggest fatal flaws (that and her ongoing hypocrisy. pride too), and of course this situation would only exacerbate it. Well played, @teamlolirock, well played. Here, take my hat. 

Anyways, Banes is the true bitch, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he turned out to be the big bad boss, and I don’t see people discussing it enough (I might make a post on this too when I have the time). 

With that being said, if you’ve read this far, thank you, and I’d like to know your thoughts. If there’s anything this fandom is missing is some good old’ character and world building dissection. Have a good one.

Alright, so few of my random thoughts of the pjo tv show as of episode 2:

SPOILERS AHEAD!

- Mrs Dotts looks way more awesome than i ever could have imagined her

- I know this was probably cut in favor of the runtime, but i like that once Chiron gave Percy that pen, he didn't ask for it back after the museum like he did in the book. He just let this 12 year old kid walk around New York with a weapon, without first making sure he really was a demigod

- Once he explained why he did it it made sense, but that doesn't mean Grover's betrayal at the school hit me any less like a ton of bricks

- I'm not sure how i feel about Gabe's characterization here. In the books he seemed way more cruel and intimidating, which justified how his story ended... But from what we've seen from him I'm not sure the tv show can satisfyingly give him the same fate

- Sally Jackson is a queen

- I like that they actually let Sally explain demigods to Percy instead of beating around the bush until it was too late

- Camp looks fucking magical

- Thought Hermes' cabin looks a hell of a lot less crowded than i imagined it (also where are the cabin numbers? Typing out Hermes' cabin felt weird. That's cabin 11 to you)

- Luke in the book to me felt like an cool older brother that looks out for you. Here he feels like the cool kid that you can't believe actually talks to you... And I'm not necessarily mad about that change

- I don't remember if it was ever stated in the book what Chiron wears at camp, but i can tell you that i didn't imagine him in a three piece suit

- I think we should have been shown a hell of a lot more of Annabeth watching Pery from the distance. Cuz we had like 2 scenes about people telling Percy that Annabeth is watching him, but only one actual scene where she was actually doing it

- On that note there was a surprisingly little Annabeth in these 2 episodes

- I'm going to watch these again and pay more attention but... Was Chris introduced at any point to Percy or were we supposed to find out that that was Chris from the credits?

- Why are the tables so small at the dining pavilion? Maybe 4 people can sit there. Are we abandoning the 'people from the same cabin sit at the same huge table' idea?

- I kinda like that we are explicitly told that Chiron and Mr. D know very well that Sally isn't dead. Like, it's shitty for them to keep it a secret. But logically it makes more sense that they know that going up in a shimmering light explosion is not how humans die

- I haven't yet decided how i feel about Grover going straight against both Mr. D and Chiron, and telling Percy about her mother though. Since in the book he was so fucking terrified of Mr. D (and for good reason too)

- While on that point... Are we gonna talk about the searchers license?

- The way Luke talked about not wanting to put Annabeth in danger by taking her in, made it seem like monsters Only come after forbidden children which is just not true. And if we are going with that idea, that camp wouldn't be necessary would it?

- And on that note... Forbidden children, really? What was wrong with Children of the Big Three (is it because we are abandoning the numbers?)

First of all, i just realised Ibis's message reminds me very much of Kingsley's patronus in HP and the Deathly Hallows saying the ministry has fallen😂

Random but I don't really get why Ezran has a telephatic connection to Zym? Like okay he can talk to animals which includes Zym(which I too don't really know where it came from but ok) but does this connection add anything besides being an deus ex machina at the end of book 2? And then they couldn't just write it off so it just shows up randomly? Idk myb it leads somewhere and i hadn't gotten there yet.

Human-elf argument? Is it to show they aren't ready to truly accept one another? Where's this going?

Why does Ezran going with them solve anything? Like it's a gesture of good will but he can't really help them fight Viren. He can just die and then Katolis will be without a king. Myb just I dunno, send your High Mage with them? It's a gesture of good will and he can actually defend himself. And isn't an eleven y/o! Opeli get your head on straight!

I really like the cook but he comes in at most random moments? Like I think brown sludge tarts can wait my friend.

They found Ibis's body! With blood mysteriously gone but ok. If we're being honest Zym should prolly be more attached to Ibis than Ez cause he spent way more time with him. But he wasn't a MC so tough luck. Where's Callum? Oh they're late. Idk why but in my mind Rayla was riding with Callum and Soren.

Viren's hesitating! I mean I get it if magic got me killed I wouldn't be so eager to pick it up again.

What the fuck is he doing to Callum? I mean possession was my first thought but. Couldn't he have done it before to anyone? I mean he prolly didn't want to reveal what he can do while still in prison before he was ready.

Since Eddie is refusing to cooperate writing wise (he's angsty and thinks he isn't good enough, so sue him), I figured I'd type up some head canons that have been floating around in my brain since I'm on the latest chapter of the IT audio book and it's from Eddie's perspective. Some of these I've already said before, but since this blog is new and I lost all the HC's on my old one, they might be new to you. Who knows. Also some are not so much head canons as much as highlighting things in the book that people forget about Eddie.

Eddie loves cars. One of the first scenes from his perspective in the novel is him watching a bunch of cars passing by on the box cars on the railroad and him wishing he could have one of those one day. He's absolutely the type to splurge on a fancy car, and that's also why he drives for a living. I know people hc him as a bad driver because of the opening scene in Chapter 2, but I feel like that was just because Mike calling him left him so caught off guard. Aggressive, sure, but still a good driver. You almost HAVE to be to live in New York.

The first love of Eddie's live was Bill (sorry to my Reddie loves, especially as I hardcore stan Reddie). It's just like so apparent in the novel that you can't deny it. There's literally a line where Eddie says he remembers he would die for Bill if Bill asked him to, he would just say when and where. He talks about how much he remembers loving Bill (and later adds it was like an older brother or a father but stfu Stephen King that shit was gay). He seems to be the only Loser that can look at Bill and know what he was thinking without Bill having to say a word. It's true love, y'all.

They mention that there's some sort of room (I forget the exact word they used, I'd never heard of it) above Eddie's garage where Richie and Eddie would spend hours just laughing and reading comics. (Eddie's favorite superhero is Spiderman). I definitely imagine that this is where they shared their first kiss if they kissed as teenagers. Either that or the hammock, but. Still. Cute.

There's some sort of hc I want to write about the fact that apparently like all the Losers would sit around and smoke cigarettes while Eddie would just watch them. I always forget that Bill smoked, too, especially since in the new films it really only shows Beverly. I don't know what I want to write about it, but SOMETHING is there. It stuck out to me.

This is one that @scribedhorror and I have already discussed several times, but Eddie is the only one that can call his best friend 'Billy.' It reminds him too much of Georgie. But Eddie calls him that several times in the book, and I imagine it's because Bill feels that sort of fondness towards Eddie that he did towards his brother, seeing as Eddie is the youngest Loser. And smallest. And most vulnerable.

A hc I have said before, but Eddie hates hospitals. He spent so much time there growing up that he spent most of his time learning how to tend to his own wounds so his mom would (hopefully) not even notice. He definitely had a panic attack waking up from his 'coma' (I say coma bc if you know me, Eddie full out died, and the magic of Maturin upon defeating Pennywise brought Eddie back, but he was definitely dead) and knowing that he was in the hospital all alone.

Old hc, but Eddie also had to use a wheelchair for quite a few months after this and go to physical therapy. No way does someone get stabbed through the chest like that and damage most likely his spine and be able to walk all easy peasy again.

Just made this one up based on the miniseries ending, but I imagine that Eddie will sometimes take small acting roles for money alongside Richie when Richie gets cast in films. He doesn't go by Edward Kaspbrak in the credits because he doesn't want anyone to find him (specifically Myra), but I haven't decided yet what his name would be. Either way, he definitely has a few small cameos and is actually fairly decent, but he would never do it full time.

Actually, book 6 happen around maybe 2 or so weeks since the end of VDC. Since we did see our newly renovated dorm, and Jamil (or Kalim?) even mentioned how it has been a while since the VDC's group chat has been active and they're called to a meeting. Meaning there are quite a long time gap between the two books, hence why I said we could fit in Shido's palace between them while having S.T.YX happen between Shido's palace and the final p5 battle.

I REALLY love your expansion of my ideas. You really make it clear how hard life is for this AU Riddle. He is a nice guy that cares a lot about people, but has a lot on his plate, even much more than Ren ever has (and he has a LOT). The whole time I reading your answer I can't help but continue to feels bad for Riddle and wish to give him some hugs. And strawberry tart. Lots of it.

Also, what I meant by another Montblanc incident: it wasn't ADeuce that make it. It was Trey, or maybe the other students that decided to make a surprise Unbirthday Party. They do invited ADeuce and Yu and Grimm, who are busy with VDC, but they're merely "guests". The students already tried to follow all the rules for Unbirthday Party, it just so happen they forgot about rule number 562. It didn't help that Trey also don't remember.

But I also adore your take on his OB and the situations leading to it.

Really, poor Riddle. Happy to see Ren cares a lot and instantly rushed in to hug him. I can just imagine the shock of everyone when he just suddenly shows up and jump in to to see Riddle. Also, he totally drop all of his plans and any confidant meetings just to see Riddle.

On that note, I am curious about Riddle's confidants. While I know the other PT will be part of his confidants, I want to know who are his other confidants? Is Floyd included as one of his confidants? 👀

Also, that idea for Maruki and Malleus is interesting. Just like I said, I don't think Malleus's OB will take a long time just like the others. Considering he has the ability to stop time, it make perfect sense that it will feels as if nothing change. But from book 7 we know outside of his magic dome, the world continue as it is. So if Maruki's mendling causing a distortion in Metaverse and the bridge between TWST and P5, what if Malleus's "blessing" also the reason why Riddle is now trapped in the Velvet Room?

Now I just imagine Malleus was looking at everyone's dreams, but then get confused when he failed to find Riddle's. He know Yu and Grimm are now bothering his plan with the help of Silver and Sebek. But Riddle's is no where to be seen.

Unbeknownst to him, Riddle is currently cursing up a storm towards him and whoever this Maruki that Lavenza and Ren told him about.

Well... I will have to argue on the book 6 timeline a bit. :v

It is not entirely wrong the 'a few weeks passed since the VDC', But actually, book 6 first started with trying to find Grim in the same night he attacked us, basically on the VDC day. This ties up book 5's cliffhanger to book 6's plot, since Grim is still missing even the next days, when Vil calls in the VDC tribe to discuss about their performance. Only then we get hit with the news of the prize money parts from Vil, Kalim, Rook, Jamil and Epel being directed towards Ramshackle's renovation. That's the time when charons come and the action takes place. Now in the 'a few weeks after' scene is mentioned how Yuu and Grim had to sleep at Poemfiore and Idia still didn't return to school. Therefore the renovated Ramshackle scene is actually the Aftermath of book 6, when we finally hear from Idia and Ortho and conclude their story.

So basically book 6 starts immediately after VDC, the STIX shenanigans a few days after VDC, taking less than 2 days, than we skip our stay in poemfiore to a few weeks-almost a month, until the Ramshackle is fully renovated and the book finishes.

That's why I said the STIX intervention happens before Shido's palace, because it's very short and it actually falls better in place plot wise, without adding too much on the plate. :v

That aside now...

For the OB, the mont blanc Scenario makes much more sense now that you mentioned it. :'3

As for my take, at the base I wanted to give him a motive to hold in and endure. Just so that Riddle will have a motivation of pushing forward, only for his goal to be taken away just because of his own negligence towards a tiny detail. It just that little light and hope of things getting better being crushed right before his eyes. :)

And Ren-Riddle friendship is everything U-U9 Just 2 wildcards having a long and tight friendship.

As for the confidants themselves, mostly when I decide for them, I use tarot cards upside down meanings to establish what problems they have that the wildcard tries to help with. It's kind of the same thing in og P5. A good example would be Makoto's confidant story. The upside down priestess means a hidden agenda, harm and secrets, which describe the situation that Makoto is, trying to warn her new friend about that dangerous boy she was with.

Also there's the councilor and faith cards in royale whom I have no idea what they represent upside down so imma exclude them :'3

As for Riddle's confidants, since already I had them decided for pttw, I don't want to use the same thing, so we are going to switch them around. :3

The Fool of course is Igor, that's mandatory for every wildcard :v

The Reflection card is marked by Ren

For Floyd... Initially in PTTW I assigned to him the high priestess(that reminds me to get my ass back on those stained glass pieces)

But in here, he would hold the Hanged man arcana. It fits him more in here, although I did contemplate on the temperance arcana for a while.

Well for the Maruki and Malleus situation... We all know Aketchi and Riddle both will make a commune accord to just gun their way out of this mess.

And Malleus 100% figures out something is fishy about rosehearts, but right now silver, Sebek, Yuu and grim are messing up his plans so the redhead has to wait. :'3

One thing is for sure: once Riddle manages to get out, Malleus gotta make his prayers :'3

Spoiler-y review of Before We Disappear by Shaun David Hutchinson

Review:

This was an incredible adventure to read. Looking at the cover and thinking it was teen or at least YA, I was unprepared for how dark it got. Our main characters are both living in abusive relationships. The theme of abuse is a strong one and is quite heavy. I think it did a good job of showing different types of abuse and the victims' reactions to it.

There was also a theme of found family and figuring out what you want in your future, freedom, and finding a home in the person you love. Both our characters go through great arcs where they learn and grow. Watching them connect, protect, love, and understand each other was delightful with an undercurrent of unease because they are unsafe and in danger.

Honestly I didn't think it would end in anything but tragedy but I was glad to be wrong. Given how heavy and tense the story was, the ending went smoothly without any problems which I feel like was an opportunity missed. With a story like this, I think the last act should have also been tense, messy, and scary. But I guess given how much hell our characters went through, they at least deserved an easy end.

I spent the entire book terrified of them getting caught or getting hurt or any other horrible things and so I think it was expertly written. I felt all the emotions of the characters and thats why I was so on edge most of the time. It was super easy to just fly through the book, I think I read it in 2 sittings. The author is great at evoking emotion in readers which was true with this book and his other book I previously reviewed, We Are The Ants.

What I loved was that the concept of homophobia was completely taken out. Our main characters are 2 gay men and our side characters are 2 sapphic women, both who get together romantically. The author makes a note of it in the end acknowledgement that it's a fantasy because homophobia existed in real life of course but a fantasy gave him full control to get rid of it in his story. What was not gotten rid of was the period typical racism and sexism but I guess nothing can be perfect, humans and their bigotry will remain no matter what. Racism and sexism also played a role in the story so there was that as well.

The villains of the story were interesting. One was terrifying and the other charming and enchanting. Teddy, the terrifying one, was physically abusive and a monster, and there was no humanity in him. In that regard maybe he was a bit stereotypical and one dimensional but I know monsters like him exist. My only issue was a line towards the end that tried to humanize him by saying he was someone who's bad decisions made him a monster and implying he may have been good before but not once do we see him do one good or even a neutral deed so that line kinda fell flat.

The enchanting one, appropriately named The Enchantress, was emotionally abusive, narcissistic, and manipulative. Yet she had more to her character than Teddy. She felt real. There was a complexness to her. We do see her do some good and very much bad and it makes her a believable character and a great villain. I was less afraid of her than Teddy even though her cunning would definitely make her more dangerous, since you would never see her coming. Teddy was dumb but physically dangerous. When the novel starts, we are told that The Enchantress captivates everyone and easily makes them like her and I found that to be (annoyingly) true. You can't help but like her or be charmed by her even though you see how much of a horrible person she is. To me, she was the most interesting and the most complex character in the novel.

Overall I think I loved this novel more than We Are The Ants.

Okay, both you @itsfabianadocarmo and @cosette141 asked for my answers on this for OuaT, so here goes!!! 😜

Fandom Ask Game

favorite character: I mean, the obvious answer here is Killian Jones. And, believe me, I do love our pirate hero very, very much. But my true favorite character of the entire show (hopefully no one throws me out of the CS fandom for this) is Sheriff Graham/the Huntsman. I just adored him from the first time we met him. My heart still breaks for him. And I am always going to think he deserved better (and we deserved more of him!)

least favorite character: Probably either Cora/the Queen of Hearts or Gothel/Eloise Gardiner in Season 7

brOTP: I do really enjoy some Captain Charming - they have such a fun bros and family both connection! - but my heart really belongs to Killian and Belle. Captain Book/Captain Beauty, whichever you want to call it is such a lovely friendship. I treasure every teeny little scene of it we got to see. There’s something so redemptive and wonderful in them overcoming their past animosity and becoming friends, and I absolutely adore them bonding and having each other’s backs! 💖

OTP: It’s Captain Swan, absolutely, all the way, they’ve really taken over most of my imagination and free time! 😅 (In all fairness, I did at the start think Gremma, or HuntSwan, could be my True Love OTP, but the show very literally killed that possibility. And of course, we then met a certain dashing rapscallion who managed to win Emma’s heart… 😏)

OT3: This isn’t really a category I give lots of thought. I have read some amazing fic though with Liam/Killian/Emma as an OT3. The one that I’d call my favorite though is what I’ve sometimes seen called Irish Swan Trio: Killian/Graham/Emma. (That I would happily read more of, if it was more commonly written. 🤭)

NOTP: I have (very rarely, thankfully) stumbled upon mostly modern au fics that have Regina and Graham hooking up, or friends with benefits, or friendly exes. I absolutely cannot handle that; it is so far from what that situation truly was and it’s just upsetting to his memory. I’m also not at all a fan or HookedQueen or SwanQueen. Neither of those make much sense to me, nor does Regina even seem to like either of them much or treat them at all well. Why would they be in a relationship?

favorite storyline: It’s probably, honestly, season one. Where we first see Emma coming to Storybrooke, getting to know her son, discovering magic and fairytales are real, figuring out who all the townspeople were in the storybook, all of that. The magic is so enchanting in that first season, and it seems the most tightly well-written to me. I often say the first season’s only real flaws are Graham’s death and Killian not being there yet!

If that’s too huge a chunk to be a favorite storyline, then I’d probably say the Save Henry trip to Neverland.

least favorite storyline: I am not a fan of the second half of Season 2. It gets all convoluted and disjointed to me, and Greg and Tamara were so pointless and annoying. I don’t know if that’s so much a storyline as a least favorite segment because there doesn’t seem to be as clear a storyline, but there you are all the same. 🤷🏼‍♀️

what I wish had happened but didn't: I’m never going to stop wishing that Emma and Killian had gotten a rainbow blast True Love’s Kiss like all the other True Love couples. I know their True Love was proven in another way, but still, come on!!! 🤨

Even more than that though, I wish

1) that Emma and Killian would have had a secret small, private wedding in the Underworld with Liam performing it so he could be there, which would be an excellent callback to Snow and Charming’s first private wedding performed by Lancelot so Charming’s mother could be there.

And 2) that when we learned about the meanings behind the gravestones in the Underworld they would have gone and found Graham’s and at least learned that he had passed on and was at peace.

**Maybe I should have mentioned 5b as a not-so-favored storyline - so much potential wasted!

what happened that I wish hadn't: I would have loved them to do so much more with Jekyll and Hyde (and Jafar, for that matter) rather than split Queenie and the Black Fairy in Season 6 😝 I also would not have had Ruby run off with Dorothy.

1. John Constantine - John is messy, queer, finds himself continually in the shit but he always manages to drag himself out of it, not through heroic grit and determination, but from sheer bloody-mindedness and spite. He’s not a hero. He’s not the good guy. He’s just a bloke in extraordinary circumstances who does whatever he has to to get by (if that includes magic, then it does). Shitty things happened to me too when I was a kid, and the original Hellblazer comics gave me a character slogging through their shit in exactly the same manner I was doing. He’s not a survivor, he’s not an inspiration. He’s just going through it because there’s no choice but to go through it. He’s a jackass so I would stop short of using the words “identified with” but I did and do feel a kinship.

2. Evie Carnahan (all of the Mummy’s characters really but if I had to pick one) - I don’t think I even need to explain this one because it’s obvious.

3. Spock in TOS - Spock was an example of someone with deep emotion and deep internal conflict who exercised supreme control over themselves and instead of it making him stern and strict, it made him compassionate and thoughtful. I was not allowed to show and have any real emotions as a kid, never had any space to process any of the things that happened. If I had any negative showing at all it caused innumerable problems so I learned to mask, to smile when I wanted to scream and cry. Spock was an important touchpoint for me in that process. And while that might read as a negative, it really was good to have a positive model of that kind of self control. 

4. Mal from Firefly - I’ve stepped back the last few years due to over-commitment but previously, I was always the captain of this, the leader of that, and there were two exchanges Mal had that perfectly reflect my own approach to leading: the scene where he’s like “I said, you’re on my crew. End of.” and “We’re still flying” “That’s not much.” “It’s enough.”

5. Wonder Woman - Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman is my first and biggest role model in life so there’s that. I’d include all incarnations here: The details change, but nothing stops her and when she takes care of a problem, she takes care of it. One way or the other. Also the first time I went “Hm, maybe I’m not straight.”

6. Jaskier from the Witcher - I’m unfamiliar with the game or the books, so I only know this character from the show. And I’m admittedly also influenced by his band’s music, which is incredibly raw and passionate. The epitome of “do I want to bang him or be him?”

7. Dana Scully - X-Files came out when I was in college. Back in the day, there were no women like Scully on tv. Also on the “do I want to bang her or be her” train

8. Lois Lane - I spent a lot of time on newspapers in school and my first real job out of college was at a paper (though as a designer not a journo). Lois Lane is that saying about Ginger Rogers doing everything Fred Astaire did but backwards, in heels. Lois did everything Superman did but without powers, backwards, in heels, and still always got her story.

9. Poison Ivy - I mean. Are we sure she’s a villain? She’s RIGHT. Also, I have a massive green thumb and my partner’s primary characters always echo Harley so...

10. Princess Leia from Star Wars - All the girlboss reasons you might imagine, reinforced by the Space Mom that Carrie became. At the time, women having their own agency and being smart and savvy was a rare thing.

Robostus Animation Errors

So, I watched Robostus for the first time and was LOSING MY MIND over the sheer overwhelming amount of continuity and animation errors. Not since Rogercop where pencil bags swapped colors, position, and existence have I seen so many, there was just ZERO quality control on this episode, so I’d like to share the ones I’ve archived for you.

No these are not all of them. I just stopped noting when between cuts some characters hair would change saturation and there’s some I’d need to make gifs in order to show.

1. Bag Swaps - My Number One Headache:

Regular followers will know my obsession with the many colors and types of bags that the characters carry and noting when they’ve gotten the wrong one, so imagine my “joy” when the episode LITERALLY OPENS with a three way swap: Kim has Ivan’s usual blue backpack, Ivan has Mylene’s usual pink, and Mylene has Kim’s usual orange. These are a straight up animation error as later Mylene and Kim have their usual bags. But that’s not all:

Alya must’ve traded with Lila for this shot because her usual blue book bag is suddenly white, but don’t worry, it’ll be blue later! And Alix also got sick of her usual blue.

2. Marinette’s Magic Appearing Purse:

In the shot where Marinette realizes she left her backpack in the locker room she also doesn’t have a purse. But while we physically see her pick up her bag, her purse magically appears at her side. (Also Alya ribs her for forgetting her bag but both seem not to notice that Juleka and Nino also don’t have their bags)

3. Sabrina’s Infamous Dye Job:

This animation error was so prevalent and never went away for any scene she was in which is proof that no one checked this episode. (And yep, another of Sabrina’s bags - her portfolio bag has been tan, brown, and this green, on top of her once having a green backpack).

4. Uh, where y’all going guys?:

When Marinette realizes she left her bag, the class is headed upstairs to Bustier, which make sense since it’s a homeroom. However!

In the time it took for her to grab her bag, hear Max exchange 3 sentences with Markov, and walk back to class, they go straight to Mendeleiev’s lab on the first floor...and the whole class is there! AND EVEN THEN!

When Robostus attacks, the class comes out of the door on the other side of the school! Unless Mendeleiev’s lab takes up the ENTIRE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCHOOL, there is no reason for this!

This one is a very common error across multiple episodes, but I noticed it here, so might as well point it out.

Bonus: This is where I’d need to be able to make GIFS to show, but when Markov speaks up from Max’s bag and he hurries to his seat, when he goes around Kim and Kim follows him with his eyes, Rose, Juleka, and Kim are physically pushed to the right with the force of the movement. But that did help me notice the next one,

⇨ 𝐀𝐓𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐔 is SO hyper. mans still has energy after volleyball practice and doesn't hesitate to ask you if you "wanna pillow fight?" ?? then proceeds to hit you before you even begin to talk. you gasp in shock as he hits your face so you try to hit him back, but the way he sways his pillow onto you is so strong which overpowers your will to do so. how strong is this man anyway ?? his last hit makes you fall back onto the bed, then he lays down beside you to trap you in his arms. "you tired?" "yes, 'tsumu, now let me go" "no" "you should've just asked if you wanted to cuddle so we can sleep" baby just wanted snuggies after all :')

⇨ 𝐁𝐎𝐊𝐔𝐓𝐎 asks "you can't sleep? mE TOO" then turns the TV on to watch a movie with you <3 he storms out the room before the movie starts and grabs a bowl of popcorn on the way back and you chose not to mind the ones that fell on the floor when he ran back to you. he likes cuddles and initiates to be the big spoon bc he wants you to be comfy. he'd pick a romcom so both of you would feel light-hearted before sleeping. but really, it's just an excuse for him to avoid watching horror movies with you, and you insist otherwise. "bo, why don't you want to watch a horror movie anyway?" "i'd be too scared to sleep" "but i'm here?" "i have you and me that i have to protect from ghosts ok" i can imagine him instantly standing up just when he hears a strange noise coming out of nowhere HFJSDGF A BIG BABY

⇨ 𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐀 is really excited to hear that you can't sleep because he was too hyper to do so. will ask you if you wanted to bike with him. bike ?? but he insists Miyagi's roads are safe to stroll around at night. he grabs the two bikes for you and both of you start to talk about life under the starry night <3 "what do you think of my spikes" "hinata, you ask me this literally everyday" "but you give me the best compliments!!" "fine, you're really good. but next time don't hit kageyama's head while serving" "you don't have to bring that up!!1!" all the cycling made you tired, so as you get back home, you feel drowsy and tired enough to fall asleep, and he is as well <3

⇨ 𝐊𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐘𝐀𝐌𝐀 tells you that it’s good to drink milk before sleeping. he actually does this and you notice that he’s fast asleep afterwards (when does he ever not drink milk anyways ??). whenever you tell him you can’t sleep, he makes sure that there’s a stock of milk cartons in the fridge just to make sure to never run out <3 “i can’t sleep” “how about you drink your milk” “but i'm gonna feel full” “well i’m not one who has a messed up sleep schedule, boke” he didn’t have to call you out like that 😔 but he got out of bed to pour you a glass of milk regardless <3

⇨ 𝐊𝐈𝐓𝐀 is really strict with you since he knows how sleep is important to you. he will NOT hesitate to wait for you to say that you can’t sleep. instead, he would give you lavender-scented candles and an eye mask before bedtime. he also cooks you boiled eggs since he says it helps with the melatonin, but will give you a tart cherry juice instead if you preferred not to eat <3 vERY responsible boyfriend, don't argue with me on this !! he'd also tell you to do the 4-7-8 breathing technique if you still can't sleep. "are you sure this will help?" "Obachan told me about this technique and it makes me fall asleep faster, try it" then proceeds to cuddle you whilst you do it. before you know it, you're already fast asleep !! although you'd have to ask him the next day about which helped you sleep faster <3

⇨ 𝐎𝐒𝐀𝐌𝐔 insists to cook you something. you told him you were too hungry to sleep, so he brings you to the kitchen so you can watch him cook :') he says ramen is too heavy to digest at night so he cooks you miso soup instead !! this soup contains a lot of benefits so he's more than glad to offer you something that will be good for you <3 you watch him prepare all the ingredients before putting it altogether like magic. even if you don't like miso, the way he cooks it will be a life-changer for you because this man not only cooks, he cooks with passion !! you both devour the carefully-made soup then head back to your room to prepare to sleep <3 "did you like it?" "i did, 'samu, it tasted really good" "don't make yourself hungry before bedtime next time" but really, you just can't resist his perfect food recipes <3

⇨ 𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐀 shows you his stolen pics of the team (especially atsumu LOL) which makes you both laugh so hard your cheeks and stomachs hurt !! he would also tell you the backstory of each picture so you would know the context. there are several questionable scenes, one of which is kita massaging his forehead in the background while atsumu flashes his butt to the team inside the locker room. another one is a blurred selfie with the team in the background dancing to tiktok songs. TOGETHER AGAIN SPOILERS

A thread of lore, Easter eggs, episode connections, and background details from Adventure Time: Distant Lands: Together Again! Let me know if I missed anything! This is adapted from my original Twitter thread.

1. I was expecting them to perhaps do a classic style title sequence for this episode, but I wasn't expecting them to straight up use the original title sequence. The only difference is this final screen saying "Distant Lands".

2. The background of the title cards is also the hill from the title sequence.

3. The ice cream having "50 flavours" and having an image of an enlightened soul is an obvious reference to the 50th Dead World as we see it later in the episode.

4. Continuing with the metaphor, the dirt in the ice cream could be a parallel to the fact that Jake's Nirvana actually wasn't perfect, because his inaction was allowing for injustice to perpetuate.

5. This whole scene feels immediately slightly off. Finn has his Scarlet sword and is out on a classic Ice King adventure, but he speaks in his grown voice and all the slang feels much more forced than it did in the real season one. Turns out this was deliberate.

6. The snow golem speaks with a baby voice like it did in the pilot episode, even though in canon it has a deeper voice. This further hints that something is not quite right.

7. The first major break in continuity is these snow golems resembling Uncle Gumbald and Peace Master, who Finn didn't meet until later in his life.

8. LSP sitting on Finn's head like this is reminiscent of Pen Ward's piece for the 2018 Ble crew zine.

9. Finn being given the choice of helping somebody but ending up helping everybody reminds me of "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain". It's the kind of resolution that wouldn't happen so much in the late seasons of the show, which helps make this scene feel even further out of place.

10. Jake is half frozen by Ice King in pretty much the exact same way as he was in "Prisoners of Love", and even has a very similar line.

11. The Snail is seen here. The crew have said that the Snail has been deliberately left out of previous Distant Lands specials, so its placement here is another very deliberate hint that this whole sequence is "trying too hard" to be like the early seasons.

12. The book "Mind Games" appears a couple of times, as seen in several previous episodes of Adventure Time. The first is as Finn is approaching the library in his dream. It also appears as one of the items in Finn's backpack later.

13. Jake is hurt when Finn fist bumps him with his metal arm, revealing that this scene is not real. This is also a callback to the title sequences of "Islands" and "Elements".

14. A whole bunch of familiar skeletons are seen in the bird's nest: Dirt Beer Guy, Abracadaniel, Me-Mow, Lemongrab, Mr. Pig, and the Snail again. This doesn't necessarily mean that all these characters are dead, since this scene is just a hallucination.

15. Old Man Finn! He's still got the chest tattoo of Jake, and this time we know that Jake is dead, so the theory that Jake died before "Obsidian" seems pretty likely. He looks similar to his old man design from "Puhoy", with the same facial hair.

16. There are several cameos of familiar characters who apparently died at the same time as Finn. The first is this duck, who previously appeared in "Ocarina".

17. The second is Donny, from the episode... uh, "Donny".

18. This goblin guy is an unnamed background character from “The Silent King”.

19. This old lady first appeared in "The Enchiridion", way back in season one. Old ladies are a species in the Land of Ooo, so I guess she wasn't actually very old back then, given she just about outlived Finn.

20. This is the cobbler who first appears in "His Hero". Amazing that he lived so long given all the trouble he got into in that episode.

21. Land of the Dead! This place was first seen in season two's "Death in Bloom", and now we are finally learning its actual purpose. It's a sort of gateway and hub to all of the other dead worlds.

22. There are some more minor cameos at the gates: a house person from "Donny", a soft person from "Gut Grinder", and a wood person from "When Wedding Bells Thaw". And, of course, the gate guardian himself from “Death in Bloom”.

23. Finn completely ignores the gate guardian in the same way he did in Death in Bloom. This also has the convenient effect of not having to reveal how Finn died, leaving it up to the audience's imagination.

24. Mr. Fox! We already knew he would die at some point because BMO had his skull in the finale.

25. Finn has his design from the first Distant Lands poster in this scene. Turns out it's young Finn in old Finn's clothes. But they gave him a shirt in the poster so you wouldn't be able to see the tattoo.

26. The clapping that Finn does while he's looking for Jake is a callback to "James Baxter the Horse", when Jake tells Finn to listen for that same rhythm if they are killed and need to find each other in the afterlife.

27. Mr. Fox talks about a "past life quotient", suggesting that there might be some kind of limit to how many times somebody can reincarnate. Finn's reincarnations are also seen in this scene; a callback to "The Vault", and confirmation that reincarnations share the same soul.

28. Boobafina, the goose who Mr. Fox was in love with in his debut episode “Storytelling”, apparently reincarnated into a tugboat. We've already seen that objects can have souls in the episode "Ghost Fly".

29. Finn is initially assigned to the 37th Dead World, which is the same one that Jake went to when he died in "Sons of Mars". We can only guess at what the other numbers on the ticket mean ;)

30. Tiffany! Despite several lucky escapes throughout his life, Tiffany has finally died. I like the use of this imagery to express Finn's conflicted feelings about him.

31. The 50th Dead World has long been established as the "highest" dead world, and the one synonymous with Heaven within Adventure Time's universe. It was first mentioned in "Ghost Princess" back in season three.

32. It's unclear what happens to souls which are destroyed within the dead worlds. It is a similar question to asking what happened to the ghosts that were killed in "Ghost Fly".

33. Death doesn't speak at all in Together Again because his voice actor, Miguel Ferrer, passed away in 2017 long before production began.

34. Finn phases through New Death when he tries to attack him, just like what happened way back in "Death in Bloom".

35. The 30th Dead World contains Tree Trunks as well as many of her love interests; Mr. Pig, her alien husband from "High Strangeness", Danny and Randy who first appeared in "Apple Wedding", and several more who we don't recognise, including at least one who presents as a woman.

36. Literally yelled when these two showed up. Joshua calls Finn a crybaby, which is a callback to "Dad's Dungeon".

37. The wall of weapons in Joshua and Margaret's house includes the iconic Demon Blood Sword, which was broken in "Play Date", as well as Margaret's auto-loading crossbow from "Joshua & Margaret Investigations".

38. Jermaine is sidelined a few times through the episode, in reference to his attitude in "Jermaine" where he feels that Finn and Jake were always their parents' favourites. I would have hoped things would be a bit better by now.

39. Fern gets name dropped while Finn and Jake are reuniting. A shame he doesn't actually show up in the episode.

40. In this scene, Finn says "What time is it?" This is a very subtle reference to the 2010 cartoon "Adventure Time".

41. In a couple of shots during this fight scene it looks like Jake might have a tattoo. It seems like it only becomes visible when he stretches out his arm.

42. New Death's amulet in this scene resembles parts of the Lich's cape, foreshadowing his influence on New Death.

43. There are several more cameos in the 50th Dead World: Booshy from "High Strangeness", one of the Marshmallow Kids from "Scamps", and Ghost Princess and Clarence, who were seen ascending to the 50th Dead World in "Ghost Princess".

44. Finn didn't interact with Booshy in "High Strangeness", but it seems they must have met at some point before they both died because Finn knows his name.

45. It seems like people in the 1st Dead World are slowly melted away until they become part of the landscape. Nasty.

46. Lots more cameos in this scene: a gnome from "Power Animal", a gnome from "The Enchiridion", a Bath Boy from "The Vault", Blagertha from "Love Games", Maja the Sky Witch, a troll from "Dungeon", Chocoberry, Choose Goose, Wyatt, a spiky person from "Gut Grinder", and possibly more.

47. Tiffany's insults are consistently nonsensical and amazing, as they were in the original series.

48. The Candy Kingdom looks extremely different. Peppermint Butler is wearing the crown so he might be in charge now, which is supported by the kingdom's very magical-looking augmentations. It’s not clear whether Finn and Jake were expecting to find Princess Bubblegum or Peppermint Butler, since both have the initials “PB” and both could be going by the title of “Princess”. Perhaps Peps and Bubblegum share the princess duties now that PB is living with Marceline more of the time.

49. Peppermint Butler has a "Boss" mug, although it's not the same colour as the one from "Obsidian".

50. Jake's ghost has the same design as he did when BMO killed him in "Ghost Fly". I also absolutely love Finn's ghost. This scene establishes that ghosts are just visitors to the mortal plane from the dead worlds.

51. Life has only appeared in animated shorts before now. Namely, "The Gift That Reaps Giving" which establishes her relationship with Death, and "Frog Seasons: Winter". This episode gives her a concrete place within Adventure Time's pantheon: she is in charge of reincarnation.

52. A translation of Life’s angry French dialogue by Shado: “After all I did for that boy. After all I did for him. No, it's not possible. It's not possible no, that... that makes me so mad but it's not possible.”

53. We finally have in-universe confirmation that Shoko's tiger is a previous life of Jake. This was previously confirmed by one of the writers, but wasn't canon until now.

54. I feel like Finn pulled off Shoko's look even better than Shoko did. I wonder whether Finn has gained the memories of his past lives now that he’s dead.

55. No Easter egg here, just want to appreciate this image.

56. There is an elemental symbol on the wall here, as seen in "Jelly Beans Have Power".

57. Tiffany's dramatic internal monologue is a recurring gag, as is his habit of nearly dying from falling into holes.

58. The Jake suit makes a cameo in the fight against New Death. It was last seen in the episode "Reboot”.

59. Finn's backpack contains a few familiar items: the t-shirt with the pocket from "It Came from the Nightosphere", Finn's underwear from "Little Dude" and other episodes, and a copy of Mind Games as I've already mentioned.

60. The Lich's Hand is present in the background of Death's... death scene. This is probably the unseen "friend" who New Death keeps talking about.

61. The Lich's menacing monologues often begin with a single command. Previously they have included "Fall" and "Stop". This time, the command is "Burn".

62. Jake uses the word "boingloings", which is a callback all the way to "Hitman" in the third season.

63. Jake's blue shape-shifter form from "Abstract" appears very briefly during his fight with Finn.

64. Finn's lumpy space person form also makes an appearance. This design was last seen all the way back in the second episode of the entire show, "Trouble in Lumpy Space".

65. Jake steps on the Lich's hand in a very similar way to how he stepped on Ash in "Memory of a Memory", which is itself a Monty Python reference.

66. The credits include a dedication to a few AT cast and crew who have passed away. Polly Lou Livingston was the voice of Tree Trunks. Miguel Ferrer was the voice of Death. Michel Lyman and Maureen Mlynarczyk were both sheet timers on the original series. Rest in peace.

67. The message that Finn and Jake write out on the ouija board is "BUTT", which Peppermint Butler takes as a distress signal. This message is also used as a distress signal by the Hot Dog Knights in "The Limit".

68. Peppermint Butler's reversed dialogue from the scene where he makes contact with Finn and Jake is "Kee-Oth Rama Pancake", the spell from “Dad's Dungeon” for banishing demons.

69. That appears to be President Porpoise with all of Tree Trunks’ other lovers.

70. In this scene, Life is humming part of "Lonely Bones", the song which Death tried to record for her in her debut short "The Gift That Reaps Giving". It's hard to notice because it's so brief.

71. Finn and Jake's cover is blown while in the Land of the Dead because Jake loudly farts, which also happened in "Death in Bloom".

72. The place where Mr. Fox explains the perception mechanics of the afterlife is the exact same location as the River of Forgetfulness from "Death in Bloom", which, as it turns out, was imaginary.

The Wrong Version Part 1

a/n: I recently saw the movie Atonement and the scene where James McAvoy's (another man I am in love with) character writes a letter to Keira Knightly's character gave me inspiration to write this. This is going to be another long story. I already have it finished, I'm just gonna post them with a couple of days in-between. I hope you like it. And before you ask, yes I did use a scene from the Ladybugs movie. The sound became viral on tik tok and there is one tik tok (I can't find it anymore 😭) that is a pov of Neville talking with everyone and then you walk by and… it's so good and I'm so sad I can't find it. Anyway enjoy 😉

Summary: Neville had finally gotten the courage to tell you how he feels with a little help from his friends. He has written everything he has ever wanted to tell you in the form of a letter. What happens when the real letter gets mixed up with a more provocative letter that you were never ment to see?

Neville sat on a stool near an empty table in the middle of the greenhouse. It was full of magical plants and there was dirt everywhere but it was the only place he could write out his thoughts clearly without worrying about anyone snooping around and looking at what he was writing. 

He pulled out his journal and began mindlessly writing a poem, or letter, or some form of words grouped together. He didn't exactly know what he was writing but he knew who they were for. Your name was written in every style imaginable around paragraphs of confessions of love. He had tried to work up the courage to tell you personally but something always came up. His only outlet was writing his feelings in his diary. He thought it best if his thoughts were kept safe there.

Neville's back was facing the entrance of the greenhouse so he didn't notice when Ginny and Luna had walked in. He completely forgot that they had asked him to tutor them for an upcoming exam they had in Herbology. Neville was supposed to meet them in the library but when he didn't show up the girls went looking for him. Neville really only had one hiding spot so it was not very difficult to find him. And there he was in the greenhouse, apparently writing something down with intense thought.

Upon entering the greenhouse, Luna was about to say hello but Ginny motioned with her finger to be quiet. Luna gave her a confused look but stayed silent. Ginny quietly made her way towards Neville. 

"Whatcha writing?" She said just as she was about to peak over his shoulder and see what he was so focused on. However, she didn't get a chance to see what he was writing because Neville slammed the book shut. 

"Nothing!" He yelped.

"That's not very convincing." Ginny said, raising an eyebrow and placing a hand on her hip. "Come on, spill it. What are you hiding?"

"What!?" Neville said, hugging the book closer to his chest. "I told you it was nothing."

"Ok, now you have to tell us." Ginny said.

"Leave him alone Ginny, I'm sure Neville was writing something very personal that doesn't need to be shared with the whole world." Luna placed a hand on Ginny's shoulder. "However, if you're writing something to Y/N. We would be happy to help." Luna smiled innocently.

Neville's eyes widened and his cheeks started to heat up. Ginny looked confused.

"Wait, why would he be writing to Y/N?" 

"How did you know?"

Ginny and Neville spoke at the same time. Then they turned towards each other speciously, each wondering what the other knew or what the other was hiding from them. 

"Well it's obvious that he has a crush on her. I thought everyone knew." Luna said plainly. "Plus there's a parchment sticking out of his book that has her name on it?" 

Neville looked down at his journal and there it was. Loose sheets of parchment sticking out of it that had Y/N written all over. He was usually more careful but he was caught off guard today.

"Wait, you have a crush on Y/N? Why didn't you tell me?" Ginny lightly hit Neville's shoulder in annoyance.

"You weren't supposed to know. No one was." He gave her an apologetic look. Then he turned to face Luna. "Luna, did you say it was obvious?" His face paled at the thought of Y/N knowing of his feelings this whole time. 

"Well I thought it was pretty obvious, but I guess not to everyone." She looked at Ginny amusingly. "But don't worry, Y/N doesn't know." 

"Oh thank goodness." Neville released a deep breath. 

"How is that good? Don't you want her to know you like her." Ginny put her two senses in.

"No, that would be bad. I don't even know if she feels the same way." Neville responded.

"Technically the only way to know is if you tell her." Luna added.

"I can't!" He sighed. "I'll just embarrass myself and ruin any chance I have with her." 

"We can give you some pointers." Ginny said.

"I don't know?" He was skeptical to let them help. He didn't want his chances of embarrassing himself to rise either.

"Please let us help you!" Luna said gleefully. "I can even give Y/N the letter for you if you want. My last class of the day is right next to hers." 

Neville reluctantly gave in. "Alright." He opened his journal to a blank page and got out his quill. "But maybe just some notes. I still want the letter to come from me." He jotted down a few bullet points on the paper. "And I don't write well when there are people around." He whispered that last part but his friends still heard him.

"Whatever. As long as you take our advice. And give us credit when Y/N can't keep her hands off you." Ginny teased. She smirked at Luna, who giggled at the insinuation. "What have you written about her so far?" Ginny asked, leaning over the table and attempting to steal Neville's journal to look through the pages that had Y/N's name written all over them. Neville quickly pulled his journal away from her before she could grab the book.

"That's private." If Ginny got her hands on his journal he knew she would constantly tease him about what he wrote about Y/N. He couldn't have her accidentally say something while you were around. "Can you at least leave me my dignity?" 

Ginny scoffed and finally let go of the idea of seeing whatever embarrassing things Neville wrote about you. "Fine. Just trying to see what you already have."

"What I have isn't good. I don't even know what to say or how to say it. I just want it to be perfect." Neville said resting his head in the palm of his hands. 

"Neville, it doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to come from your heart." Luna said.

"Well it would be nice if what came from my heart was perfect." He muttered under his breath. 

"Neville." Luna said sternly.

"Please help me. I just want her to know that I like her and maybe ask them to go to Hogsmeade this weekend, without sounding like a complete fool." His tone was full of worry.

"We will." Ginny added. "How do you want to start?" 

"I'm not sure?" Neville admitted. 

"How about you start by complimenting her first." Luna suggested. "Sweet talk her before the big reveal."

"What?" The meaning of Luna's words going completely over Neville's head. 

"Flatter her." Ginny explained.

"Tell her you love her eyes." Luna said dreamily.

"Her lips."

"Her hair."

"The way she parts her hair. In fact, tell her you love all her parts." Ginny raised an eyebrow at the last part. Luna giggled at Ginny's innuendo.

"Oh no I can't say that." Neville's eyes widened at the suggestion. 

"That would tell her how you really feel." Luna added. 

"I'm not writing that." Neville gave the giggling girls a stern look but it was hard to take him seriously because his face was so red. 

"Then just talk about her smile." Luna suggested. 

Neville wrote down a note to talk about your smile. "Ok, so how do I tell Y/N that I like her." 

"Like that." Ginny snarked, 

"No, I mean how do I word it so it comes out… " Neville couldn't find the right word to describe how he wanted his letter to be written.

"Not creepy." Ginny laughed, earning a nudge from Luna. 

"Romantic?" Luna suggested.

"Yes, romantic." Neville's eyes lit up. 

"You could write her a poem?" Ginny suggested.

"You should tell her the whole truth." Luna said. "Tell her how long you have been in love with her. Tell her everything that you have been burying inside you for the past six years. That's probably the most romantic thing ever."

"I think that might be too much for one letter." Neville confessed. He looked down at his notes and wrote down their suggestions, contemplating if this was a good idea after all. "I don't know, maybe this was a dumb idea?" He started scratching off the list.

"Hold on." Ginny said, stopping him from scribbling out his plan. "Neville, you have to tell Y/N how you feel. You can't keep your feelings bottled up like this. I'm still surprised that you didn't tell me." She made a funny face as she thought about it. "Actually I'm more surprised that I didn't see it sooner. It totally makes sense now why you act differently around her." 

Neville gave her an unimpressed look.

"Look what I'm trying to say is that you've liked her for a long time. Don't you think she deserves to know? I mean for all you know she might like you too, but you guys are just idiots and can't realize that."

Neville signed and looked at the ground contemplating on what he should do next. "I don't know."

"She's right though. The only way to really know is to jump into the unknown." Luna added.

"Thank you Luna. Now if you're not going to listen to us anymore. Then can we head to the library? We're not going to pass this exam by ourselves." Ginny said, crossing her arms in front of her.

"Alright, alright. I'm packing my things." Neville grabbed his bag and placed his journal and quill back in his bag. 

As the trio left the greenhouse, Ginny and Luna couldn't help but pretend that they saw you.

"Oh Hi Y/N!" Ginny called out to an empty hallway behind her.

Neville turned around wide eyed and red. He was worried that Ginny might do something or say something that would haunt him for the rest of his life. But when he turned around and saw no one he relaxed a little. Then he saw Ginny and Luna huddled together, trying to muffle their laughter. 

"Really." Neville complained. His face seemed to heat up more at his embarrassment.

"I couldn't help myself." Ginny laughed.

It was the day after his confrontation with Ginny and Luna. After school he went straight to his dorms. He knew no one would be there. Everyone preferred to hang out around the castle than stay in their dorms anyway. He would start writing his letter to you with a good chance at not being interrupted. 

When he got to his dorm room he made his way over to his bed and got out a book from on top of his nightstand, a quill, and a piece of parchment. He sat with his back resting against his headboard and used the book as a hard space to write on. He began to write.

'Dear Y/N,

I know this might come as a surprise to you or maybe you suspected this and were too nice to let me down. In that case, I might be ruining our friendship and you might never want to see me again….'

"No!" He crumpled up the letter and threw it to the ground. 

He grabbed another piece of parchment from his desk. 

'Dear Y/N,

I'm in love with you.'

'Too rushed. What did Ginny and Luna say again? talked about her smile.' He thought to himself.

'Y/N,

You have no idea what your smile does to me. I can't breathe when you walk into the room.'

'That sounds like they smell bad' He scolded himself. 

He threw another letter into the trash. This process of writing seemed to last for about 45 minutes. There was a good sized pile of crumpled letters on the floor lying next to the full tin trash. All of them different versions of what he wanted to tell you. He just couldn't put them in the right words. Some letters were actually well written and almost finished before he started doubting his skills and others were just a couple sentences. 

He laid on his bed, looking up at the top of his four poster bed in frustration. He rubbed his temples to ease his headache. Why couldn't he just think of the right words to confess his love for you. He felt it was hopeless. 

As he looked up at the top of his four poster bed he couldn't stop looking at the picture of the two of you that stuck to the wood. It made him think about you. The way your smile lit up a room and made everyone feel at home. It was a genuine smile, one full of love and warmth towards anyone on the receiving end. He thought if a smile could embody true friendship it would be yours. He loved the way your lips curled at the end and the way your cheekbones become more prominent with your smile. Your eyes would gleam with happiness as you smiled. He noticed that they were always bright and caring. Your eyes could tell a million stories and he would gladly listen forever if you let him. Then he thought about your neck and how beautiful it was. Sometimes when you would look up at something he would often admire the curve that was created by your neck and jaw. He would often picture himself leaving trails of kisses where his eyes lingered. He could picture that so clearly now and he suddenly felt the room get more hot all of a sudden. The only thing better than imagining kissing your neck was leaving a trail of kisses down your body all the way to the place between your legs. Then a smile curled on his lips. He had no idea what came over him but he turned on his stomach and grabbed a quill and a piece of parchment. 

'Y/N,

This letter is my heart-template in which my burning feelings for you will finally be expressed. My heart burns for you with every fiber of my being. I belong to you and only you. I don't think I will ever love someone more. I dream of you day in and day out. I dream of being at your mercy as I beg for you to touch me. In my dreams I kiss your cunt, your sweet wet cunt. You would call me yours and I would call you mine. I only wish to be yours forever. If you only knew that I worship the ground you walk on and I would do anything you ask of me. Your lips never leave my mind 

You are the only one on my mind now. I am in love with you.

He put the quill down and sat up to read what he had just written down. His lips curled into a smile and out came a surprised laugh. He would never let Y/N see it but he didn't want to throw the letter away either. Instead he folded it in half and placed it in the top drawer of his nightstand for now. He laughed at himself again and rubbed the back of his neck. 

"What is wrong with me?" He asked in the empty room. He let out another breathy laugh and rubbed his eyes. Sometimes he fantasized about you in these situations but it never got to the point where he would actually write them down on paper or let alone say them out loud. 

The image of him eating you out remained engraved in his mind and he wished he could just make it go away. You were still his friend and it was inappropriate for him to think of you in this way. 

He laid on his back on his bed with his arms spread out, thinking about what he would write about. Maybe Luna was right and all he had to do was tell you everything that he had bottled up for the past six years. But where would he begin?

He shut his eyes to think but he eventually fell asleep. He dreamt of the first time he met you in his first year. It was like reliving the exact moment. Everything was the same. Then suddenly he was moving through every year with you again. Every memory he had of you replaying in his head. 

Then something he had never seen before flashed before him, the two of you were sitting under a tree. He was laying his head in your lap while you rested your back against the tree. You were laughing and he was smiling up at you. It felt so real to him and he felt if he reached out and touched your face he could actually feel it. His hand reached up and cupped your face bridging it down to his. He kissed you with such fervor and passion, then you returned the kiss with equal emotion. However his dream was cut short when his own snores abruptly woke him up.  

His eyes shot open to a dark room. His dormmates seemed to have been sleeping peacefully. They didn't bother waking him up from his nap. He looked around the room to see what time it was. His clock showed it was around 2 am. Then he felt wetness on his cheek and realized he had been drooling. He felt the heat rise to his face when he remembered his dream of kissing you, apparently he had been kissing his pillow in real life. 

As he wasn't tired and couldn't fall back asleep he decided to head to the common room. He suddenly felt like he finally knew what to write. With a quill and paper in hand he sat by the dimly lit fireplace and wrote.

'Y/N,

After being your friend and telling you all my hopes and desires, I need to tell you what I have been harboring in my heart for the entirety of our friendship.

You are my sunrise and sunset. You are my world and you have been since the first time I saw you on that train back in our 1st year. My heart leaped in my chest and the vision of you made me catch my breath. I knew I would belong to you forever. I remember that day so clearly.

Your hair was in braids. You were looking out the window and the sun was bouncing off your face, making your eyes sparkle like stars in the midnight sky. Ok so I’m into the dreamer trilogy and haven’t read the Raven cycle...what is Declan’s characterisation/journey there?

also declan’s TRC storyline is like. equal parts horribly fucking sad and unbelievably fucking hilarious so. i will try to strike a Balance

FIRST OFF.  there is exactly one (1) declan POV chapter in the entire series. it happens toward the end of the last book. up until then, everything we know about him comes from the observations and narration of others.

he is also a very minor character.  his importance grows throughout the series, but almost all of his actions happen offscreen.  it’s not until the last book that we know exactly how much he’s been dealing with the whole time.

when he’s introduced in the first book, he appears as a plot device.  here is a two-dimensional horrible controlling hardass who doesn’t give a shit about anything but his future political career.  look at his fake, smug fucking grin.  how did someone like ronan end up with a brother like him??  doesn’t matter.  it’s a convenient excuse for ronan to live with his best friend in a drafty warehouse, which means more room for YA hijinks!

declan’s introduction scene is Embroiled in Capital-D Douchebaggery. according to the narration (from gansey and adam), he loves to fuck women and then never call them back, cozy up to powerful people, and bitch about how ronan’s ruining his life by being sad about their dead parents.  SOME people can just get over their dead parents, ronan!

this intro scene is also Extremely Funny i 100% recommend reading it even if u don’t read the actual series.  ronan makes a nasty comment, declan goes “why are you the way that you are” and tries to salvage his date, gansey utters the phrase “man whore”

then later that night things go like. actually bad.

declan shows up at the same pizza place where ronan is with his friends.  this scene is gansey pov.  gansey runs out to the parking lot to find the two of them Very Literally Trying To Kill Each Other.  you don’t see that violence in cdth - there’s only the TINIEST shadow of it when declan confronts ronan over matthew - so i Cannot Express Enough that someone is going to end up hospitalized at BEST. ronan’s already slammed declan’s head on the car, declan’s already grabbed ronan and beaten the shit out of his face, like.

you do not get good old-fashioned Declan Lynch At His Actual Worst in cdth. u might be thinking, THAT guy???? doing THIS????

oh yeah. things are real bad between declan and ronan.

after gansey breaks up the fight (and gets punched in the face for his trouble, albeit accidentally), declan tells ronan that their dad would be fucking ashamed to see him now & that he’s washing his hands of it & basically if ronan wants to go off and fucking die, he can.

this is like. just a couple months after the magical suicide attempt referenced in cdth

in the aftermath of that scene it becomes clear that ronan absolutely unequivocally 100% will kill himself if he has to live with declan. hence. why he’s living with gansey instead.  gansey spends that whole night petrified that the declan altercation will lead to another attempt, and for Good Reason

so like, that’s how we first meet declan. he’s an uncaring wannabe corporate asshole who does not give a fuck and who only exists to exacerbate ronan’s mental health issues.

but then the opening of book 2 gets real interesting.

book 2 is where we start learning more about the lynch family.  we learn that ronan’s father was a dreamer who sold his creations on the black market, we learn that that’s why he was murdered. we learn that ronan’s a dreamer too. we learn that there are very powerful people looking for the greywaren, an artifact that takes objects from dreams. those powerful people just don’t realize it’s a person, yet.

so here’s the assassin who killed niall lynch.

he goes to declan’s dorm.

with everything we know about declan, the kid should be completely unprepared.  he can box, but the assassin knows that, so there’s no real advantage.  he’s alone, and he doesn’t have an escape route.

declan pulls out a gun.

this is an unexpected turn of events.

unfortunately he ends up getting beaten half to death with the butt of said gun, because he loses the ensuing physical struggle for the weapon.  the assassin is like, i need the greywaren.  declan is like, i know it exists but i don’t know what it is.  i’ll find it for you.  i’ll get it to you.  then you’ll leave me the fuck alone

now with everything we know of declan at this point - his attitude toward ronan, his general demeanor, and this new knowledge that he knew about the black market - there’s one obvious question.

will declan sell ronan out if he finds out about the dreaming.

and like, okay. their relationship is antagonistic in cdth but it is NOT what it is in trc. believe me when i tell you that at that point, when you’re reading, you can pretty reasonably go, “oh, god.  oh god.  oh god please no one ever tell declan what the greywaren is.  oh god.”

declan has some other interactions with ronan and the gang throughout the book, mostly where he’s just a hardass who tells ronan to stop causing trouble.  adam’s the only one who notices that declan is scared.  like bone-deep shaking to the core petrified.  about Something.

probably getting beaten to within an inch of his life by the man who murdered his father.  that’s the reasonable reader conclusion.

so imagine how everything changes when you find out that declan already knows.  that declan’s known about ronan’s dreaming for longer than ronan has.  that declan knew exactly what and who the greywaren was, and he lied to a man who was ready to torture him for information, and he got away with it.

suddenly a lot of things recontextualize.

“keep your head down and stop making trouble”? people are gonna NOTICE your magic bullshit, ronan, we do not have time for this!

“stop hanging with that loser druggie friend of yours”? you mean the loser druggie friend who sells on the magic black market and doesn’t care about protecting himself or anyone else?

“i got super weird for no reason about ronan sleeping close to adam”? i don’t have fucking TIME to be homophobic i’m busy with your POTENTIAL TO MANIFEST NIGHT TERRORS IN FRONT OF WITNESSES IN BROAD DAYLIGHT

“i’ll find out what the greywaren is and bring it to you”? i’ll die. i’m making a bargain to die. i’m never giving you the greywaren and i know you’re going to kill me about it and that’s fine as long as my brothers are safe

ronan doesn’t know that he dreamed matthew.  declan knows.  he’s known the whole time.  declan tells ronan in book 3.  and then things recontextualize even further, because ronan’s death is also matthew’s, and matthew IS close to declan in trc.

but declan never tells the goddamn truth unless it’s his last option.  he doesn’t tell ronan that he knows about the dreaming and he doesn’t tell ronan what specifically wants to hurt him and the lack of communication fucking destroys both of them.

in the last book, ronan realizes declan loves him.

more than that, he realizes declan’s loved him the whole time.

this is when declan finally tells the truth.  things are getting bad, plot-wise, and declan is scared, so he comes clean.  he tells ronan that niall specifically tasked declan with protecting ronan from the market.  he begs ronan to run from the danger.  “let’s pour gasoline on everything dad left and start over.”

this is also when ronan realizes that declan’s childhood was very different from ronan��s own.  and that niall and aurora lynch were not the same people to declan that they were to ronan.  and that their father’s decisions are what’s driven the wedge between him and declan all this time

(he’s still struggling with the cognitive dissonance of this in cdth. i don’t think he knows how to adjust his perception of declan to fit this new information.)

aaaaand the final scene with declan makes me cry every time i read it so instead of summarizing, here’s the important part:

Ronan delivered a sharp tap to the object, and a small cloud of fiery orbs sprayed up with a sparkling hiss.

“Jesus, Ronan!” Declan jerked his chin away.

“Please. Did you think I’d blow your face off?”

He demonstrated it again, that quick tap, that burst of brilliant orbs. He tipped it into Declan’s hand, and before Declan could say anything, jabbed it to activate it once more.

Orbs gasped up into the air. For a moment, he saw how his brother was caught inside them, watching them soar furiously around his face, each gold sun firing gold and white, and when he saw the spacious longing in Declan’s face, he realized how much Declan had missed by growing up neither dreamer nor dreamt. This had never been his home. The Lynches had never tried to make it Declan’s home.

“Declan?” Ronan asked.

Declan’s face cleared. “This is the most useful thing you’ve ever dreamt. You should name it.”

“I have. ORBMASTER. All caps.”

“Technically you’re the orbmaster though, right? And that’s just an orb.”

“Anyone who holds it becomes an ORBMASTER. You’re an ORBMASTER right now. There, keep it, put it in your pocket. D.C. ORBMASTER.”

Declan reached out and scuffed Ronan’s shaved head. “You’re such a little asshole.”

The last time they’d stood on this roof together, their parents had both been alive, and the cattle in these fields had been slowly grazing, and the world had been a smaller place. That time was gone, but for once, it was all right.

The brothers both looked back over the place that had made them, and then they climbed down from the roof together.

I was wondering...I was always confused about Narcissa’s hair. It’s been a while since I read the books. Did she color it blonde to show her now belonging to House Malfoys. Or was it naturally blonde? Movies confused me a bit I guess.

Yes, this had me confused too! I've agonized and toiled over it, more than I probably should, about how I should draw her hair because people have generally different views, which is totally understandable! 💕

And I've always wanted to discuss it, so now that I've been given a reason to... Well.

If you take a look at some of my Narcissa fanart, you'll notice the different ways I'd color her hair. I was so confused. Is she a light blonde? Dark blonde? A mix of raven hair and blonde hair? If she has blonde hair then why does her family have (mostly) dark hair? And WHY does she have blue eyes?! This woman is absolutely confusing! (Which is kind of, you know, fitting because Narcissa always loves to be a mystery to literally anyone lol)

So I did my homework, asked around, and scoured every bit of information, canon or otherwise, that I could find about her. It led me to this:

In canon, this is what the Black sisters look like. You can find the page here. Narcissa is a child here, and already has blonde hair. So we can go ahead and safely assume that she was born with natural blonde hair. But in the films, Narcissa has black and blonde hair. I don't actually know why they gave her that hair color, maybe so that the audiences wouldn't question her blood relations with the Blacks--I don't know. I really don't. But now we have a book version Narcissa, one who has full blonde hair. And a movie version Narcissa, one who has raven and blonde hair. At least, that's how the different hair colors started: a movie version, and a book version.

So... here's where it gets confusing.

To my knowledge, it isn't actually explained why her hair color is the way it is in both the movies and the books. Having blonde hair does raise many questions, how is she the "only" blonde in a family of dark hair and dark eyes? To top it all off, it gets even more confusing, because fanon writes and draws her either as a full blonde or a mix of raven and blonde hair. We just have this large pile to sift through of her having either hair color. No one actually explains anything. She's just... infuriatingly there. She's either blonde or raven haired and blonde. BUT fanfiction writers, as I've observed, give their own reasons why Narcissa's hair color is the way it is in their respective stories. And it's actually pretty creative and interesting! It adds even greater depth to her character, and it fits the narrative of the story even better. Remember, the character we're dealing with is Narcissa Black. One of her main traits is "she won't do anything unless there is a clear purpose behind it." This character is deliberate, meticulous, and she makes sure to plan ahead at all times. And so, some fanfiction writers decide to play on that.

You can skip this part if you want to avoid spoilers but I've compiled a small list of instances in (Cissamione) fanfiction where Narcissa's hair is mentioned.

🔹 In Extinction by rubikanon in Chapter 10: Build and Break, Hermione asks Narcissa about it. Here, Narcissa has black and blonde hair. She explains that she only decided to dye it blonde to "fit in with the Malfoys." We can gather two things from that alone, which resonates with her character perfectly: 1.) Narcissa is loyal and 2.) Narcissa purposefully wants to show the rest of the world how loyal she is by committing to having blonde hair. The woman has some serious commitment, and it shows. But now, the way that it's slowly growing back into her natural black hair color, hints that perhaps Narcissa no longer wishes to fit in with the Malfoys. However, if we take an even closer look, we can safely assume that Narcissa isn't the kind of person to just leave her hair color "unattended" like that. Remember, she's meticulous. And this is a big deal for her, the fact that she's just kind of letting it grow back instead of either fully dyeing it back to black, or dyeing it back to blonde. It suggests that perhaps she's a little unsure this time, perhaps it is her uncertainty that is the reason why it's now a mix of both. Another grey area? Or maybe it's actually something more deliberate? Maybe now, she likes that it's a mix of both. That other half now being solely for Draco, and not to fit in (completely) with the Malfoys any longer. Who knows why Narcissa does things the way she does? We can speculate to the ends of the earth, or be as smart as Hermione Granger (or with the case of Extinction, see Hermione's thoughts), but something tells me we'd still be a good step behind.

"Which one is your natural hair color?" I wondered aloud.

(Narcissa) She glanced up at the unexpected question. I was relieved she hadn't sensed my attention yet. It's not like I meant anything by it, I told myself. She was so beautiful, one couldn't help but notice. And feel physically drawn to her. And want to see her two-toned hair fanned across her back, slipping over the bare skin, silky beneath my fingers...

"Why do you ask?" Her query brought me back to reality, and I hurriedly corrected my imagination to include a pretty dress covering the rest of her.

"I don't know." I chewed the inside of my cheek, suppressing my other thoughts. "I'm just curious."

Her gaze returned to the fire. "You've seen enough of my relatives to guess which color is genetic. The blond is something I added to fit in with the Malfoys, after Draco was born." She was quiet for a moment. "He looks so much like his father. I suppose I wanted to share some resemblance."

🔹 In Killing Me Softly by Looktotheedges in Chapter 4: Nagging, Hermione suggests that perhaps Narcissa is part Veela because of her blonde hair and very attractive features, like Fleur. Which is this whole other theory/plot that's very interesting, but won't be discussed in this post. Narcissa tells Hermione that Sirius has always been blonde, and that it isn't out of the question for her to be blonde either. Sirius Black. A blonde. I know! Maybe it's there because it's funny that Sirius is actually blonde like Narcissa. Prissy, haughty, lady-like Narcissa. Arguably the 'girliest' cousin that he has. No, no, no. He doesn't want to be anything like Narcissa. Anyway, if that's the reason, I think that's hilarious and cute.

Narcissa turns away. 'I am aware my appearance is frightfully drab. Work has been…'

Hermione holds back a disbelieving scoff. 'Narcissa. You always look beautiful. And you’re talking to the witch with grass in her hair who practically lives in her office all week.'

Narcissa just leans further over the crib. 'A blonde little boy. It has been so long since… I can almost imagine…'

Hermione stands next to her. Looks down at the peacefully sleeping Louis. He does look remarkably like Draco. 'Are you sure there’s no Veela blood in you? You weren’t secretly switched at birth?'

'Like a changeling?'

'It would explain your blonde hair.'

'Sirius was also blonde, it is not completely out of the question for us Blacks.'

What?!

(...) 'I know. But it is the truth. He was blond until he was about seven… then it began to darken. Mousy. Dull. He wanted to look cool and brooding instead, so he got his hands on some kind of charm right before he set off for Hogwarts. A new, edgy Sirius. It was around then he forbade us from calling him Siri. Said it sounded too girly.'

🔹 In Fixed in Time by TheWorldsaBeastofBurden in Chapter 9: Sisters and Saviors, it's also tackled a little humorously. Andromeda let's a little comment slip while they're in the middle of trying to heal Hermione. Something funny, something that suggests Andromeda and Bella, when they were children, have always wondered why Narcissa is blonde unlike them.

The first words spoken occurred after they’d risen and attempted their casting. Andromeda’s preparedness to take on their task had been clear in her mind so Narcissa rose with her sister, wrapped an arm around her waist and held her near as the woman raised her wand to draw up the rest of the injury she’d dropped, half a slash across Hermione’s hip bone…

That remained half, as Andromeda growled out, “...it isn’t working.” she looked to Narcissa, “Why aren’t you powering me?”

What nonsense? “I am!” she insisted. She was! Or “I- I am trying to!” Her magic was active and alive, pulsing to rise from her skin and transfer into Andromeda’s but it- it wasn’t working! “Could...could it be that you were disowned?”

“Disowning doesn’t take away the fact that we share blood, our magic is directly related. Ugh, Bella always said you were adopted!”

“Oh ha- oh.”

“...oh?” Andromeda returned.

“...it’s not an issue of power. It is what I intend to aid in casting,” Narcissa slowly worked out. Oh, it was most blessed Mister Goyle could be brought to assist the present Hermione. If her present self had been brought to aid Andromeda? “...I cannot harm Hermione.”

Andromeda sighed with some frustration. “I understand you are so tenderly in love-”

“It isn’t- I’m avowed! I- when we arrived from the future we had to escape Malfoy Manor, I couldn’t bring Hermione through the wards without...I couldn’t add her directly, that would be visible. I had to...attach her permission to mine.”

🔹 In Glass Silence by Zarrene Moss (Menzosarres), which probably gives one of the most interesting backstories for Narcissa's hair, for why it's blonde. I can't put a clip of the scene here without hogging up a huge chunk of space on your dash, so I'll try to explain it as best I can instead.

Understand that these come with serious 🛑spoilers🛑 so please do read it at your own risk.

In Glass Silence, Narcissa's hair and eye color was black at birth. But after an accident with raw magic, something Bellatrix wasn't able to control when they were children, Narcissa almost dies. Bellatrix, using even more raw magic, tries desperately to pull Narcissa's "life force" back, but at the cost of losing the eumelanin that made Narcissa's eyes and hair black. Narcissa survived, but now has very little eumelanin left, which is why she's so pale, blonde, and has blue eyes. Every time Narcissa looks at a mirror, her reflection is a reminder of the day she almost died. Bella, on the other hand, is reminded of that day every single time she looks at Narcissa.

So! These are only a few fanfictions I could think of at the top of my head that tackles the issue of Narcissa's hair. In the books, to my knowledge, she is described as having blonde hair and very pale skin.

But let's take another deep dive, if you're up for it.

These are mostly theories, which are largely unconfirmed, but I think they're interesting to think about.

There's this description in the wiki:

"Narcissa Malfoy is described as tall, slim, "nice looking", and very pale, with blue eyes, long blonde hair, and a clear, cold voice. Her hair colouring thus differs from most of the House of Black, who generally have dark hair, though Narcissa does possess the arrogant good looks characteristic of her family."

There's also this pinterest photo of the Black sisters being compared to each other side by side, descriptively and physically. I'm so sorry, I don't know who drew it, but here's a link to the post on pinterest.

"Narcissa threw back her hood. She was so pale she seemed to shine in the darkness... long blonde hair streaming down her back."

Which is interesting because this hints that she's... different. It's a bit literal in this sense--she comes from a pureblood family, arguably the most influential and notorious one, the Blacks, who mostly have dark hair and eyes, and yet her physical appearance directly contrast that. There's also the matter of her namesake. She's the only Black to be named after a flower instead of a galaxy or a star. We aren't really given any explanation why she's the only one who's different. Even Sirius, who fought and died for the side of the Light, is named after the brightest star in the sky. Even Andromeda. It's been said that this is actually meant to be a parallel of some sort to Lily Evans. Narcissa and Lily are both named after flowers, even Petunia (Lily's sister). And I know there's this thing where it's a tie up to how Harry was ultimately saved by a mother's love: Harry lived at the beginning because of his mother's love, and Harry lives once again at the end of the books because Narcissa, a mother who wanted to save her own son, saved him.

If you read that scene in the books where Harry is saved by Narcissa, the whole scene is actually... pretty soft? There's that sort of disarming softness about Narcissa in that moment, where Harry expected to be callously dragged and prodded for a heartbeat. Instead, he gets a surprisingly gentle touch, a curtain of long blonde hair shielding him from the darkness, and the kind of tenderness he wouldn't expect from his enemies, "Is Draco alive?"

It's almost like Narcissa's appearance is something of a "tell". With Andromeda, she's described to have kind eyes, open, unguarded. She inherited her family's dark eyes and dark hair, and she even looks like Bellatrix's twin. I suppose we could say, Andromeda wants to fight that in any way she can by being openly kind. Narcissa is quite literally the opposite--guarded eyes, stoic expressions, cool and calculated emotions. We're veering into this fine line between fanon and canon in terms of their characterization (but only due to lack of canon materials) but personally, I think Narcissa having blonde hair and blue eyes is somewhat more fitting for her character. Again, this line:

"Narcissa threw back her hood. She was so pale she seemed to shine in the darkness... long blonde hair streaming down her back."
